Kobe Bryant declines comment on divorce
Talking to the media for the first time since his wife filed for divorce, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant declined comment on the end of their 10-year marriage.
When one reporter asked if training camp serves as a refuge for his personal life, Bryant took a dig at the person's hairstyle.
"Like overly strong hair gel?," Bryant said with a smile before walking away from reporters.
On Friday, Vanessa Bryant filed for divorce in Orange County Superior Court citing "irreconcilable differences," marking the end of a decade-long marriage during which she stood by his side through allegations of sexual assault that were ultimately dropped and admission of an extramarital affair.
Vanessa Bryant and her attorney had signed the petition Dec. 1, long before it was filed Friday. Her husband's response was signed Dec 7. Both sides requested joint custody of their daughters Natalia, 8, and Gianna, 5. Vanessa Bryant's mother previously told a Times reporter that the couple had no prenuptial agreement, saying they ultimately choose to forgo one after months of negotiations. The court filing Friday indicated that property rights were to be determined.
The Bryants released a joint statement Friday in apparent hope to minimize the public attention surrounding their relationship.
"We ask that in the interest of our young children and in light of the upcoming holiday season the public respect our privacy during this most difficult time," the Bryants said in the joint statement.
