Magic Johnson appears in Quicken Loans commercial

September 9, 2011 | 11:32 am

Shaking people's hands. Expressing enthusiasm. And, of course, flashing that signature smile.

Yup, that's what Magic Johnson does. Did it when he played for the Lakers. Did it as a businessman. It's also one of the reasons why, besides his five NBA rings and dazzling playmaking abilities, that he remains the most beloved Laker.

So it comes as no surprise that Johnson's recent appearance on a Quicken Loans commercial hit on those themes. Johnson joined Detroit Venture Partners, a venture-capital firm that invests in seed and early-stage technology companies, in late July. It didn't take long for the company, headed by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, to cement its marketing campaign behind Johnson.

"The response has been overwhelming. We're going to do some great things back home," said Johnson, who played at Michigan State and grew up in Lansing, Mich.  "All of those talented young people, they want to keep them in home so they can start their own business there. Then they can hire people from Michigan as well."
