Derrick Caracter to play in Impact Basketball Academy league
Dan Barto, the IMG's pro/college training coordinator who has worked with Caracter for the last three summers, confirmed the report from Hoopsworld's Alex Kennedy that stated Caracter would be one of 40 NBA players competing in that league beginning Sept. 12 and ending with a championship game on Sept. 23.
Caracter's playing career appears uncertain considering the Lakers can't officially decide whether they'll exercise their $788,872 option to retain him. He averaged two points on 48.5% shooting in 5.2 minutes a game his rookie season. He was arrested at a New Orleans IHOP and was detained and booked in connection with charges of battery, public intoxication and resisting arrest. In a video that instantly went viral, Houston Rockets forward Terrence Williams posterized Caracter early August at a charity basketball game in Louisville.
Barto acknowledged the importance of Caracter replicating the improvement he's seen during training in his defense, rebounding and post position in the Las Vegas-based summer pro league.
"If he tried to block Terrence Williams, knocked him to the ground and Terrence Williams tears his ACL, people would be, 'What the hell is this guy thinking?' It’s a charity game," Barto said regarding Caracter getting posterized. "Now in the summer league, if he’s just as slow, then there’s the problem. If he comes with the same mentality in this lockout-league games and he’s still not getting to where he needs to be and not taking pride in that, then there’s an issue."
