Ron Artest to appear on "Dancing With the Stars"

August 29, 2011 |  7:23 pm

Ron ArtestRon Artest is about to embark on a new venture far more complicated and difficult than learning the triangle offense.

He's going to appear on ABC's hit show "Dancing With the Stars," as announced on Bachelor Pad. (The Times' Yvonne Villareal has a complete rundown on the cast.) Considering his many public proclamations that he doesn't know how to dance, Artest's appearance might increase the entertainment value. It'll be like seeing Artest trip over his feet while running a fast break, or taking an ill-advised three-pointer.

As Artest said earlier this summer: "I play defense. I don't know if I dance."

Artest's agent, David Bauman, and publicist, Courtney Barnes, didn't return calls for comment, but it's safe to wonder whether Artest's appearance on "Dancing With the Stars" would affect his availability for other future endeavors.

He originally planned to play an unspecified number of exhibition games with the Loimaa Bisons, a professional basketball team in Finland, during one week in September. That remains unclear, however, considering "Dancing with the Stars" begins Sept. 18.

Despite ongoing concerns whether the team would cover his insurance, Artest still remained open to playing overseas with the British Basketball League's Cheshire Jets. Their season begins Sept. 30 and runs through next April, but Artest told The Times in mid-August that he won't join the team until late November because of the aforementioned appearance in Finland.
