Magic Johnson recalls nickname's origin

August 5, 2011 |  5:37 pm

Whenever Magic Johnson spends time with his family, plenty of names are assigned to him.

Johnson's wife, Cookie, calls him Earvin. When he returns to his hometown of Lansing, Mich., the family calls him Junior. And Magic? Nope, it's never uttered.

In fact, when a local sportswriter gave him the nickname after seeing him dominate in a high school basketball game, Magic's . . . I mean, Earvin's mother went ballistic.

"She didn't like it," Johnson recalled. "She said, your name is Earvin. She was upset that somebody was calling her [son] 'Magic.' " Then he laughed. "I think she got used to it though."
