NBA suspends Matt Barnes for one game

Matt-barnes_300 The NBA on Friday suspended Lakers forward Matt Barnes for one game, without pay, because of his altercation in the fourth quarter of Thursday's win over Dallas.

Barnes will miss Friday's game against Utah in Salt Lake City. The suspension will cost Barnes $17,650.

Barnes was one of five players ejected in Thursday's Lakers-Mavericks game, but apparently was the only one suspended by the league.

The altercation began in the fourth quarter when Dallas guard Jason Terry gave Lakers guard Steve Blake a hard shove on a drive to the basket. Blake and Terry went nose to nose, then Barnes jumped in and pushed Terry. Dallas assistant coach Terry Stotts grabbed Barnes but Barnes broke free and Stotts fell into some courtside seats. Blake was ejected from the game.

Terry was also ejected and given a flagrant foul two; on Friday the league reduced Terry's foul to a flagrant foul. Dallas center Brendan Haywood was ejected for his part in the Blake-Terry scuffle. Later in the quarter, Lakers guard Shannon Brown was ejected for shoving Dallas forward Brian Cardinal.

After he was suspended, Barnes tweeted: "Me & the Golden St homies laid out the blueprint on how to beat Dallas. "PUNK' EM"...So enough w/the small talk."

Team ought to chip in the 17,650 to show appreciation for MBarnes.

I think that suspending Barnes and not suspending or fining Terry is grossly unfair. But it is what it is. The Show must go on. They've got a game to win tonight. Barnes will be back to help them beat Denver on Sunday.

GO LAKERS!!!
17 IN '11!!!

MVP888-bring on the suit![laughing]

well, this is what i expect from this bogus league. my only problem, besides the ridiculous nature of all the ejections which were caused by the usual poor officiating, is the arbitrary nature of the suspension. to suspend Barnes for his part and not suspend Terry is just wrong. for that matter, if Terry is tossed and assessed a flagrant, then Cardinal and Nowitski should also be penalized. myself, i think there should have been a couple of personal fouls, a couple of techs and everybody should have played on, but obviously i'm not in charge.

How in the @$%^$%@ does Terry not get suspended or fined?

F'N RIDICULOUS!!!

The article mischaracterizes Terry's shove on Blake: Terry shoved Blake to the floor after the play was over (I believe a whistle sounded before the shove) and while Blake's back was turned and he was off-balance going out of bounds. If you watch the replay, you will see that it was totally not "on a drive to the basket" but afterwards, and it's sole purpose was to knock Blake to the floor. Again, it was not a play on the ball, not a play to stop a drive; it was a cheapshot afterwards, and clearly done out of Terry's own frustration because he was playing horribly. Why was Terry's foul reduced to a flagrant 1? Flagrant 2 was the right call, given that it was not a play on the ball, was totally after the play, it was obviously done with malice (you can see by Terry's behavior afterwards), and Blake could easily have gotten hurt given that he was vulnerable at that time (back to Terry, off-balance, etc.). I just don't get why Terry was given a break (the call on the floor adjusted in his favor), and why Barnes is suspended and Terry was not.

And wait a minute, Terry's foul was downgraded? WTF?

This is seriously bunk. I wonder how much Cuban payed off Stern for the favorable treatment?

We need an investigation. This is not even close to a fair outcome based on Terry's actions.

PS: Not only was Terry's foul a flagrant 2, but he shouls have been suspended for the additional reason that he was stalking Barnes down the court, keeping the hostilities going, as Barnes was walking away, and had to be controlled by the officials (I believe it was n official "escorting" Terry during the stalk) the whole time, so Terry was continuing to carry on even after Barnes was (reluctantly) walking away. Terry should be suspended too!

I'm in agreement with everyone else. To suspend Barnes and not Terry makes no sense. But neither did...the one sided handling of Dirk foul on Kobe, or Shannon and Cardinal. Dirk should've got a flagrant and Cardinal should've been tossed with Shannon (or neither tossed).

I love Blake's energy, hustle and feistiness...but the tweet, the t-shirt are pushing the envelope a little much...let's keep it classy...this is the Lakers, the gold standard!

Stu Jackson is everything that is wrong with the NBA. How can Terry get away with this?? WTF?

I agree and I think the suspension may be the NBA's way of reining Matt in a bit. Downgrading Terry's foul and not suspending or fining him is bogus to me. His attitude and big mouth need reining in, too.

I can't believe that David Stern witnessed the same game I did and the NBA still came up with that decision. They replay video they watched must have been missing a few minutes of tape. Lakers will THREEPEAT and Kobe should receive MVP honors and Coach Jackson should receive coach of the century. Yes, I do bleed purple and gold.

The LAKER Legacy Will Prevail !!! BTW Phil is THE coolest EVER !!!! PUNK EM BOYS !!! Fast Eddie .. San diego.. ( CARLSBAD )

Stu Jackson is an IDIOT!

Cardinal's style of play is deplorable to me. He was in the game for only a few moments and yet managed to create a fair amount of turmoil. He was going out of his way to create contact and deliver blows in a game that was out of hand.

The NBA rules make less and less sense each year. The person who initiates violence and altercations should suffer, generally, the most - because they have initiated for no reason other than their own frustration, anger, impatience, or whatever. The other party is defending or reacting and to stand up for one self is simply human. If you suspend Barnes than on what grounds can you not suspend Terry? Stern, the dictator, needs to go.

If there's 17,000 L.A. Fans which I know there are, let's all contribute, $1.00 each to show this "Sawed Off Runt, Stern we think this is unfair.

Screw it!...Suck it up Lakers, you'll be fine....We own that punk-azz team and they'll be on the golf course -- as usual -- soon enough.

I COMPLETELY agree with "Mayor of Kobe Town" (even though I missed the game because I was rooting for my Nor Cal Giants against the So Cal Dodgers at the time).

The "shove" was so clearly intentional. Terry didn't even try to hide his intent to harm an opponent. At least when a "dirty screen" is set, it is done under the pretense of a "screen". (A side note: Inside pitch is done under the pretense of being a pitch. Throwing a shattered bat back at the runner, a la Clemens at Piazza, is a "sissy" move.) Terry's shove demonstrated complete contempt to the opponent, the refs, the coaching staff, and the fans in attendance. "Look, everyone, I'm not even going to hide this; I'm just going to shove this player to the ground in front of all of y'all's eyes....."

Not to defend Matt Barnes, since it would be stupid to attempt to defend a known dirty player. But if you want to break up a scuffle in sports, do so by holding back one of your OWN players. During scuffles in baseball games, third base and first base coaches have been known to pretend to hold back the pitcher so the batter could get a clean shot at the pitcher's face....... I hope Stotts learned his lesson.

Consider this, Jason Terry got the same punishment as Brendan Haywood! Stud Jackson is a moron.

I'd be interested to see how Dallas will respond to the next 2 back to back games at GS (Sat.) and at Portland (Sun.) Very tough places to win, and that's 4 games in 5 days on the road for Dallas. The Lakers may have crushed their spirits last night. Also, Dallas is only two games ahead of OKC, so OKC's catching up #3 seed is not out of the question either. If that happens, I am not sure if Dallas (#4) can get out of the 1st round, which would matche up against Denver (#5.)

Hmmm....Pistons retiring Rodman's jersey 2nite...a Bad Boy reunion at the Palace. They would've made last night's dustup look like a game of shuffleboard. Check out video below...and this doesn't even show most of the Pistons worst stuff...like Laimbeer take down of Bird.

Dirtiest teams in the last 30 years....Bad Boy Pistons, 80's Celtics and 90's Knicks. Honorable mention to Stockton/Malone's Jazz.

Barnes got suspended but not the instigator, Terry? No wonder the NBA is also known as the N(o) B(rain) A(ssociation).

This is ridunkulous!! Terry should've been given the same punishment. Ay caramba haters gonna hate, what can you do. Move on.

What I love most about our Lakers since ASG:

FOCUS - this team is locked in and loaded, they're not only on playoff mode but they are in a championship mode. I truly believe they can still turn it up a notch, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. But wow, I am enjoying this journey with our Lakers and with you fellow bloggers.

Brotherhood - this is evident from the smiles on their faces, the high fives, and the way they cheer and holler off the bench when their fellow teammate/s make a good play/s. Something had happened maybe it was the loss in Cleveland or the loss against Miami, but whenever/wherever it started, it's apparent how these guys treat each other as family. Those are genuine smiles, cheers, and high fives/pat in the back/head out there. I'm seeing championship glow and intensity :)

Defensive intensity - one name pops in mind: Andrew Bynum. He's the anchor of our defense. It seems like everyone followed his lead. We saw it last night when Kobe stole the ball, off balanced and managed to tip it to his fellow Laker. Ron and Artest try to snipe the ball from anyone. Even Fisher did a good job defending guards his age :P Jk. I could go on and on but that'll be lengthy and boring. So in short, our defense ROCKS!

Maturity - is Lamar Odom, nuff said! 6th Man of the Year.

Onto unrelated laker note: bow-bwaaaaaa (such a funny last name, i get giggles saying it)

I love the T-shirt. It's BOMB!

I used to hate Matt Barnes for crap like this, but now - man. I like it!

GO LAKERS!

I already knew Barnes would be suspended. No surprise. And I could give two **its about whatever happens with Dallas...

Having said this, it's obviously unfair to REDUCE Terry's foul (and I'm not kidding about this..) Blake could have been seriously hurt - his knee for example. And if that would have happened, would Terry see a 2 gamer like Bynum? If so, obviously the crime isn't what gets punished, but rather the result.

And that's flat out wrong.

I also thought the coach should have been fined for impeding an ejected player from leaving the area (but I knew I wouldn't get that one)

Yeah.. Terry's punishment = Haywood's... and Haywood didn't do a thing!

Dirk's foul would have been an ejection if Kobe would have reacted differently - which again shows the NBA is concerned with result and not actions

Look at the replay David Stern! Look at the pushed after the foul and tell us that wasn't intentional? Open your eyes!! You need to suspend the guy that started the whole thing and was it intentional or not. Feel sorry that the Mavericks will not get pass the Lakers in a 7 games!!!

Yahoo story about Barnes' suspension....

http://tinyurl.com/3hwsd3s

The article mentions that Barnes threw off the assistant coach, Terry Stotts, and how that action involved some contact with fans in the very expensive seats. The league's thinking was probably swayed by that. The NBA is very conscious of its image and has very little tolerance for any forceful interaction with its high paying customers. The Barnes suspension is a little more understandable when looked at in that light. It does not, however, explain why the league office lessened Terry's penalty and why they didn't see fit to suspend or fine him for starting the whole thing.

jckbqck,
---" (even though I missed the game because I was rooting for my Nor Cal Giants against the So Cal Dodgers at the time)."---

How'd that work out for you?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Go Dodgers!!

Go Lakers!!

League knows Dallas need Terry to continue to make a run at the top spot for the west. Suspending him will just make the Lakers a front runner for that spot. We must understand this is a business and this will look bad for business for the league.

Lakers can afford to loose Barnes for one game and Mavs can't afford to loose little terry.

I'm glad to see the Lakers come out and take this action...this will show the league that the Lakers can't be push around!

Lakers will play Boston again for the championship. Again good for the league. No one will watch the finals if Chicago wins except for Los Angeles and Chicago!

For Jason Terry NOT TO BE FINED and/or suspended is a travesty!!!! He started the entire situation---Terry was angry due to getting beat--period. Hopefully, he's now out of consideration for 6th Man of the Year. I remember when Terry, again bitter because he was losing, deliberately punch a player in the groin/private parts. He's a softie and a horrible sport. Mark Cuban must have paid fat boy David Stern and that imbecile, Stupid Stu Jackson, off. The outcome of this is mind boggling. The NBA, again, looks illogical due to silliness at the "top." I sincerely hope there an uprising of criticism towards Stern and Stu Jackson for this. What idiots.

The league and Stu Jackson in particular is bias to Matt Barnes, sending a message don't get involved in altercation and unsportsmanlike conduct. Well, Matt has to get out of the hold of that Asst because he was being sent out by Joey Crawford. He already got ejected and someone is still holding you. Is the coach one the Lakers asst.? Would u trust him to hold u while other Mavs players are also moving around? If there will be suspension, Stu has to balance the scale on who initiated the fight in the first place and by standing toe to toe on his victim, Steve Blake, does that not merit a suspension and unsportsmanlike conduct as well. How about Dirk Nowitsky, he pushed Kobe's back which is also dangerous why not give a flagrant foul, Dirk can afford to pay the fine. lol!

Well, we can't undo what happened? They sell emotions tinged with angelic behavior. At least we are aware the NBA honchos will always be bias against the Lakers and yet the league preferred the Lakers to be in the Finals in order to achieve the desired rating. It is plain hypocrisy in mixing business and judgment calls.

"I love the T-shirt. It's BOMB!

I used to hate Matt Barnes for crap like this, but now - man. I like it!"

Idiotic statements like this are the height of homerism. To criticize an act only if it is performed by someone (or some team) that you don't like is something I would have hoped that Laker fans were above.

If KG had worn or promoted a shirt like that ("KG will kill you if Perkins doesn't kill you first") I'm pretty sure that this blog would be overwhelmingly (and rightly) critical of the thuggish sentiment. To embrace it merely because it is being offered by a Laker is pretty pathetic.

We can love Matty and still say that this shirt is classless and beneath the dignity and history of the Los Angeles Lakers. If you disagree, ask yourself if Jerry West, Kareem, or Magic would have EVER said or worn such a thing....

great comments ; dallas need all the help they can get that why terry wasn't suspened. they still hoping for the 2nd seed (lakers 1st,dallas 2nd and spurs 3rd )wishful hope for dallas and i hope the have to play the lakers in the 2nd round go lakers get that 3 peat send phil out in style

I agree with u Dan the man, how did it work for him to cheer for the Lakers and the Giants as well. Why not go with Golden State Warriors? lol! No sane Dodger fan will admit a Giant fan in our town. LMAO!

Chris Webber did a nice job on the TNT postgame show of breaking down Dallas' futile attempts to intimidate the Lakers late in the game.

He went so far as to spell it out... he said Dallas is S-O-F-T!

The switch for the Lakers was not better offense or better defense, it was simply they became angry. They seem to be able to take their intensity to a higher level than other teams, and they play effectively when the games get gritty and each play becomes a gut-check.

Gotta love this team. Go Lakers!

I agree that JT was given a pass because he's a vital part of that team's success.
At the very, very least, a fine was in order but a suspension is definitely justified.

The Jason Terry foul followed by the flagrant happened directly in front of the official who was extremely s-l-o-w to stop the action before it escalated. The whistle was slow and so was his presence before Blake got up from the floor and rushed Jason.

He literally pushed Blake away from him toward the floor as Blake was already off of his feet heading for the hardwood already. He could've have hurt Blake and that had nothing to do with going after the ball - a la Bynum's recent suspension. It smells and again, I rarely get fired up over the offiiciating but this is completely absurd, biased and completely unfair.

All of those ejections - except for the main culprit, JT - could have been avoided if the official closest to the call would have acted properly and promptly. There has to be consequences for their actions just as players are held responsible for theirs.

Stotts was not pushed to the ground either, he "friggin" slipped and fell after Barnes loosened the "bear hug" the guy had around his waist. It's all a farce and I don't want to allow officiating to help lose my perspective on the game. Players have to play through this garbage and fans have to sit through it as well.

This team will have to calm themselves down. There's no fighting in the NBA; it's not hockey so all of this is what I refer to as "showboating and puffing." Nothing is going to happen and it's pretty "sissy" to go through all the motions when you know you're not about to throw a punch or literally beat the $h!t out of somebody. This isn't the playground where blood can flow so these players need to stop pretending that it is.

Rest that knee Matt and Laker Nation will see you on Sunday!

Go Lakers & In Buss We Trust!!

...and Bynum was suspended for 2 games????

I believe the lakers cost stu jackson his job when he was a coach. Yall remember he suspended kobe a few years ago when he was shooting a jumpshot and his foot hit ginoboli? Then he suspended the beast for 2 games for a hard foul. I have seen shaq lay rondo right out with no penalty besided a foul. Now suspending barnes and not the jetis just the continuation of his hate of the lakers.

Downgraded the foul to a type 1?! The NBA needs to speak with Joey Crawford, he made the right call. When someone falls that hard, it's not considered a type 2? Whoever made this call needs to see an optometrist immediately!
Secondly, that keebler elf known as Terry, shouldn't be boasting and talking about a legend. CAN HE SAY HE'S WON A RING? BEEN IN THE ALL STAR GAME? BROKE ANY RECORDS STATISTICALLY? LEAD HIS TEAM TO THE FINALS? NO! EXACTLY!
HIS COMMENTS WERE AS RELEVANT AS THE LAKERS NEEDING ADAM MORRISON TO WIN LAST YEARS CHAMPIONSHIP!
That's right Matt, $h!t hasn't changed because the Mavs will NEVER win a championship!

This is probably about Napoleon Bonaparte Stern and his puppet Stu (I have the last name as Phil but that doesn't make me competent!) Jackson trying to avoid the big mouthed wrath of Dallas' owner. Cuban--who seems to me like Charlie Brown would be if he won the lottery, same silly t-shirt and all--would probably "Tweet" (aka, cyber-whine) up a storm if Terry were suspended. Yeah, Terry's cheap shot instigated the whole thing, and logic, which never seems to factor in with the NBA bosses, would dictate a suspension for that alone. So there's got to be a reason for Terry's lack of a suspension, and I figure Napoleon Stern not wanting to deal with Big Mouth Charlie-Brown-With-Billions Cuban is probably it.

Meanwhile, where it matters back on the court, Dallas is the same as ever, and the Lakers showed 'em, as usual, who is coming out of the West.

Hopefully Matt's at the Grotto gettin' treatment.

The NBA should suspend the referees for seemingly being stoned during the 2nd half, and letting the game get out of control. Barnes should get a raise for having enough self control to not cold cock dipwad Terry, and just shoving him. I congratulate him for standing up for his teammate. The level of officiating in the NBA has gone from deplorable to absurd.

Unfair ! Terry should have been suspended for a game also . I don't understand the NBA ! Terry clearly pushed Blake and it was clearly done with malice . Terry started the whole thing . Barnes did the right thing by standing up for his teammate . Lakers were clearly sending a message that they would not be soft and they are in playoff mode . I too agree that the referees have blown many calls and really have shown that we need new blood .

Beyond ridicuuuuuulous that terry wasn't suspended.

i rewatched the fight and was thinking wouldn't it be great for phil to get physical with mark cuban and have to be restrained....
