Derrick Caracter faces multiple charges after allegedly striking cashier in New Orleans [Updated]

Caracter_640

This post has been corrected. Please see note at bottom for details.

Laker reserve Derrick Caracter was arrested early Sunday morning in New Orleans for allegedly striking a cashier at a pancake restaurant, police told the Times-Picayune on Monday.

The arrest was first reported by the Los Angeles Times on Sunday night. Police declined to comment then and referred the matter to the department's public information department.

A police spokeswoman told the Times-Picayune that Caracter started "grabbing and pulling" at the cashier.

[Updated at 11:25 a.m.: Caracter, 22, reportedly grabbed and shoved a cashier at an IHOP restaurant on Canal Street, according to New Orleans police. The account, issued in a police news release Monday morning, said the Lakers rookie forward had been refused service at the IHOP because he was "obviously drunk, unruly."

A police officer was summoned to try to defuse the situation, and backup also arrived after Caracter would not cooperate.]

He was detained and booked under several charges: one count of battery for hitting the employee, one count of public intoxication and one for resisting arrest. He was later released from jail after bond was posted.

For the record, 11:40 a.m. April 25: Earlier versions of this post referred to a pregnant waitress and a pregnant cashier. New information from police indicates the alleged victim, a cashier, was not pregnant.

Derrick: repeat after me: Boys do not hit girls under any cirumstances. Ok, now repeat after me: D-League, here I come...again!

Great!! As if there wasn't already enough going on...

This just keeps getting better...

{Whince}

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

I wonder if now the Lakers will pick up DC's option for next year or let him go after the playoffs.

Good grief DC, pick on someone your own size.

Innocent until proven guilty but I don't know why the Lakers have held on to him this long unless it's just to keep another big guy around in practice. He has been a wasted roster spot all year.

Laker Fan-

Looks like Derrick "Lack of" Caracter fits right in!!

No D League for him! He will probably get promoted to starter now!!

Is there anyone out there who can find a pic (if there is one) of Gasol's face when Kobe passes him the ball late in the fourth?
Literally, I mean literally, Gasol was frightened by the pass.

The bench lost this one for us.

Shannon is seriously starting to piss me off! How hard is it to pass into the post?! His shot has been missing since December and he needs to realize that our strength is on the inside, not 25 foot rainbow jumpers!!!

Please give Trey a shot!!!!! His basketball I.Q. seems much higher that anyone currently on our bench not named Steve Blake.

ARGGGGGGG!!!!
I'm turning into a pirate!

My first selection of the day:

Grabbing and pulling isn't the same as hitting someone, but they both fall under battery. If Ben Worthlessberger did the same thing the cop would've asked for an autograph and called it a night. Just another case of being black in the wrong diner. I'll give Derrick the benefit of the doubt on this one until all the facts come out.

) Why was the bench in for so long at the beginning of the fourth? That was the perfect time to win the game and starters should have been in to do so.

2) Lamar's inconsistent post-season play is back; I can never understand it-he should control the second unit, but he never seems to

3) Matt Barnes didn't show up yesterday at all-much like Game 1; while many hyped him up all season, I always worried abt his inconsistent play esp in the post season (look at Orlando last season) and post-surgery he hasn't been the same

4) Offensive Rebounds-or the lack there of by the Lakers-you can have all that height and not use it; painful to watch

5) Spilt Shannon's time with Trey. Unfortunately Shannon is a better player when he has competition-his play when Trey was there the first 2 games and before the Sasha trade. Unlike many on the thread I am not going to bash Brown-his amount of raw talent is crazy, he lacks the proper court knowledge (something to be worked on during offseason) in this case I rather not see him learn on the court in the postseason-so limit his minutes and use him when he is being productive.

6) Lack of PG- Trey Johnson isn't the answer, Fish is older, and Blake wasn't the best move in the off season. While much of the league has gotten younger and faster, the Lakers have not. I think the Lakers can make it work for the rest of the season, but will be addressed in the off season.

7) I still think the Lakers will when this series and will go on and win the ring. However, they are making it much harder on themselves and the fans in the process.

Of course this series was supposed to be a sweep but we're talking about The Lakers. It was evident the way they ended the season that the playoffs would not be easy for them.

Personally, I was in for the sweep but after watching them lose the opener, I just knew this was going to be a 6 game series. No, I'm not a genius, just an objective Lakers fan.

We can "dissect" this all we want. They will get out of this round and then they'll have to be re-evaluated in the opener of the next one.

Frmkt,

Count me among those who was talking sweep…and then 4-1. But you called it right (hopefully) it’ll be 4-2.

I still don’t think anyone can take the Lakers in a 7 games series, but OKC is starting to look scary.

As far as last night's game there's more than enough blame to go around, including the coaches. The only exceptions were Artest and Blake.

Excellent points ... We dont know what she did to provoke him!!

Can we not panic after one loss?

Now I'm counting on people to contain their lesser angels and not hit the panic button.

But if we have to, lets panic about D Caracter. What a loser that guy is. I'll try to give him the benifit of the doubt, but hitting a pregnant waitress is not going to get him too much sympathy around here.

A drunken, resisting arrest in the heat of the playoffs. Does he think he's Kwame Brown? You don't just get thetitle of "New Kwame," it has to be earned. But he is off to a real good start.

Lets just hope the child survived the punch....

Wes

A blip on the way to another three-peat.

They take control of NO at home, and beat them the 4th time either there or here. Then they move on to beat a much easier team to defeat, Dallas.

Jealous Laker-haters: Suck on!

Pregnant waitress? He hit a pregnant woman, who was working as a waitress??? Looks like Mr. Caracter needs to develop some character.

Yikes! The person was a female. You just don't put your hands on a girl under any circumstances. Tomato, tomatoe - it's all the same. Besides, this guy is kept on the roster to be ready and play. What the heck was he doing drinking and eating at a diner in the wee hours? No excuse for any of it and as far as being black in the Big Easy? You've got to be kidding me. Whatever...

________

@LRob - Miami looks a whole lot scarier to me. Give credit to Doug Collins because he didn't let his young guys quit. I really enjoyed their win yesterday. That was the best game on the docket.

Lets not rush to judgement.

If he did not hit ... You must acquit!

http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2011/04/los_angeles_lakers_player_arre.html

the article in the new orleans paper has a little more info. Definitely a lapse in judgement.

_______

What does a woman do to provoke a "man" to put his hands on her? I just don't understand this. It's not like she was threatening his life by placing a gun to the side of his head and was about to pull the trigger. If you find yourself in a scenario that's about to escalate, be a MAN and walk away - PERIOD! If you can't' handle your liquor, then drink water!!

@ S Perkins

Are you a complete moron or just working your way up to that?

Things to wonder about:

- Why wasn't Ron getting more shots in the 2nd half after almost single handedly keeping them in the game in the 1st half?

- Why is Bynum covering CP, what a horrible mismatch.

- The Lakers have no one who can cover CP 1 on 1.
Time to keep doubling him?
Time for some zone defense?

- I wish the Lakers had kept Kobe out after he injured his ankle, but it appeared Kobe is The Decider.
They still may have lost but I would like to have seen what they did.
It appeared PJ wanted Kobe out but let him play. Maybe this is PJ's way of letting the team "work it out".

- Kobe glaring at Pau for the fumbled pass at the end.
Ugly.
It was a total team loss, enough mistakes by all of them to share in, except maybe Ron gets a pass..

- Why in the world was the bench kept in the game in the 4th when NO started pulling away?
What happened to increasing the starters minutes in the playoffs? It is the playoffs now isn't it?

LRob and frmkt,

Neither OKC or Miami looks scary. It's the refs that looks scary when they're officiating their games.

really hope that lakers get new , young PG and trade some players away..shame on them..how they play .. no heart on their play except Kobe.

I am a Kobe , Lakers fan,, but really hard to watch their games..so bad.. they need to shake their roster. NOW, PJ will be gone, hope then Fisher may come off the bench, not a starter..and send Walton somewhere, wasting money, use that money to get good a player, What is wrong with S Brown ? I thought he was doing good..he is reckless, rush, bad....

To borrow T.J. Simmers column today "If the Lakers can't stop Trevor Ariza, a beaten-up Chris Paul and a cast of nobodies, how do they stop Miami's Big Three, Boston's Fearsome Foursome, or Oklahoma City's Energetic Five?"
It's really mind-boggling that they swept the Hornets with David West in the regular season and now tied 2-2 in the play-offs without him replaced by journeymen Ariza & Landry. The Laker fans said this over and over again that the Lakers is just bored in the regular season that's why their play is so pathetic, just wait for the play-off. It's play-off time and we're seeing the same pathetic play. As the play-off goes deeper and deeper the more I believe that this team does'nt have it anymore to three-peat. I hope I am wrong.

If the accusations are true then I hope the Lakers get rid of him...

Keep the trash in LA. Your team is garbage and gonna get beat down.

>>>What does a woman do to provoke a "man" to put his hands on her?

In general, a woman? nothing. Other than maybe inviting him.

But you're leaving out that she was also a waitress.

Have you ever been in a restaurant and it seems like your waiter or waitress is ignoring you? When they walked by the table, did you ever touch them on the shoulder or give them a nudge? In that context, you're not "assaulting a woman", but "trying to get the attention of your waitress".

The description was that Caracter was acting drunk & disorderly in the restaurant, and "he started grabbing and pulling a pregnant waitress".

It didn't say he started beating her about the head.

It didn't say he started punching her in the stomach.

It didn't say he grabbed her breasts or her bottom.

It said he "started grabbing and pulling her".

Could this be that Caracter (and whoever he was with) was taking a long time to get served, and he merely grabbed the waitresses' wrist as she waked by the table?

That would still a little bit out of line, but a far cry from assault.

And did the pregnant woman show? Was she 8 months pregnant? Was she in a delicate condition? If so, why was she still waiting tables and not home resting? If not, then why do they even bring up the fact that she was pregnant?

Like the rest of you, I don't know most of the details of the arrest.

It's possible that some cracker southern white woman didn't like the fact that she had to serve a black man, so she was ignoring their table and then went crazy when he touched her and screamed bloody murder.

or it's possible that Derrick Caracter was drunk and had seen too many Mardi Gras videos and thought that all women were easy in the Big Easy.

But unless and until we learn the facts, it's out of line to condemn or excuse Derrick Caracter for his actions.

sincerely,

BG (Blog Gestapo)

All these complains about the Lakers losing are dumb. It's LA, drama has to follow and in a business sense, makes it even better for business.

Lakers have the highest payroll in the NBA. How else will the Buss family recover the money??? PLAY AS MUCH GAMES AS POSSIBLE. Each additional game means millions for the team.

Get a life fans or non-fans. Watch and just enjoy the moment. At the end, they will THREE-PEAT. Their playoff records will probably be 16 - 12

everyone relax. This article doesn't say much. What if this waitress is just out for money? You think she'll settle out of court? LOL

The more damning part of the description from the New Orleans newspaper is this:

"The female officer tried to defuse the situation, Harper said, but Caracter remained obstinate. The officer arrested him."

That's just plain dumb.

I can imagine reasons why he may have grabbed a waitress (as described in the last post). I'll add that race may have been involved (e.g. "Sorry, but you'll just have to wait, boy").

But when a cop enters the situation and you don't calm down, you're just asking to get arrested. It sounds like basically when the manager brought the cop in, they would have been satisfied if Caracter would have just left, but he raised a fuss and so he got busted. That's just stoopid on his part.

The phrase "remained obstinate" stands out to me. Sounds like Caracter was provoked in some way by the waitress, or the restaurant. What was he obstinate about? Did they refuse to serve him? Why? Because he was drunk (acceptable reason)? Because he was black (unaccepable)?

The Lakers are falling apart. There's no question this might just be part of the whole Hollywood script again. But with Kobe's ankle now being an issue, there's a reason the Lakers should've taken care of business early

So what I want to know is how many other players were with him out partying and drinking when they had a big game the next day? Might explain some of that terrible play.

"The Lakers are falling apart. There's no question this might just be part of the whole Hollywood script again. But with Kobe's ankle now being an issue, there's a reason the Lakers should've taken care of business early

Indeed. Getting New Orleans in the 1st round had looked like the best case scenario and the Lakers definitely have not made the most of it so far. Assuming they even make it past this series, they're not going into the second round fully rested like most people (including me) thought they would be.

calm down fair weather fans. this is the same Laker team that went 6 games with OKC and 7 games with a injury riddled Rocket team. Until they lose 4 games and are sitting at home with us, either ride with your team or go do something else and stop crying. that simple. no one on here is a GM or a team owner, so what makes you the expert what is the problem with the 2-time defending champs, who have been to the FINALS 3 years in a row. some teams, never even sniff the playoffs (CLIPPER FANS).

Here it is: If they lose game 5, then you can sound the Alarms but it ain't over until the fat lady sings. However, losing game 5 will become "situation critical." No way will Kobe allow himself to miss game 5 and just having him on the court will require the Hornets' attention. What Kobe decides to do with it is something we'll just all have to wait and see. I still say Lakers in 6.

She's not pregnant....she's just a FAT cow!!!

@sean

You know you may have a point. The same question occured to me, both in this case and Pau's lack of performance last Sunday. Jackson seemed to be indicating as much when he said,' the early Sunday games do not agree with this team.' N.O is a famous party town so one has to wonder. Back in the Magic Johnson era, the team (players) had a self imposed 'no partying' rule during the playoffs. I suppose it's too much to expect that level of professionalism today.

Lakers Win....Phil Great......Lakers Lose.........Everyone else sucks. Go Figure.

I am from New Orleans. It takes a lot to get arrested there. Have all the fun you want, but stay within yourself. As soon as you start to cause trouble or problems for other people, that's your ***. And mess with the police and it is a guaranteed trip to OPP. Be cool, even when the cops arrive, and all of this will probably go away. Dude's a coullion.

It is probably Pau Gasol's fault Derrick did this. It is raining here and that is Gasol's fault too. If it wasn't for Gasol, Kobe wouldn't have gotten hurt and the Beast wouldn't have knees made of glass. LA has made it to three finals with Gasol on the team, but clearly he played no role in it. Read Medina or that joke of a messageboard ClubLakers and it will confirm what I just wrote.

Okay, so Caracter is a dumb-as-a-box-of-hammers Mel Gibson Wannabe.

Looking down the page, I see a number of posters defending the shoving of a waitress. Excuse me?? I was raised to respect other people and NOT to lay hands upon them. What kind of standards do these spoiled Laker stars have?
That if THEY want to shove people around it's OK??

Real Classy, Lakers.

We should not be suprised at what transpired last night or anything that Caracter does! He has a history of issues dating back to High School and his college years at Louisville! He was in constant trouble with a history of bad decisions. Come on, he transfered to UTEP because not a single one of the major schools wanted anuthing to do with him! He will be a career bench player so the Lakers should make the smart decision and let him go! I understand innocent until proven guilty but to even put yourself in that situation during the playoffs shows a lot about character. These guys continue to get chances because they have talent but he has consistently shown a pattern of poor behavior! Cut the cord!

Gasoldoesn'tsuckyoudo: Why don't we just call him Pau Ratzinger, since the guy is clearlyt infallible in your eyes. Of course he's a great player. Of course we couldn't have won the last two championships without him (or someone as talented and appropriate for this team). But you know what? He sucked hard the last three games and that's a fact. And if we get bounced, it will mostly be because he let himself get punked by a handful of scrubs. Will that mean his previous accomplishments don't count anymore? Of course not. But you're acting like the two things are mutually exclusive or something.

LongTimeLakerFan: You just fabricated five or six different 'ifs', 'maybes' and 'coulda-beens' into a bona fide incident of vicious racism. I know there's a lot of racism in this country, especially in the South, but that's no reason to assume it right of the bat as the cause of every legal incident involving a black person. I would call that ignorant, but it clearly doesn't stem from a lack of knowledge, but poor critical thinking skills and mental laziness... there's a harsher word that describes that defect. "Remained obstinant" can mean anything from refusing to answer a question to resisting arrest. Put your magnifying glass away, Sherlock, you're not gonna solve this one. I'm gonna laugh hysterically at your knee-jerk comments if they find out the waitress was black.

OK, so the series is tied, so the attacks on the team begin after one incident that really has little to do with the Laker organization. I know how it is, when the Chicago Bulls and Jordon dominated the NBA I hated them also.

ive been following this post, because i was in the ihop when this whole mess went down so i have FIRST HAND information. i can tell you that it was not a matter of race, anyone that thinks it may have been, well you're obviously from L.A. and never been to new orleans, blacks are definitely NOT the minority in this city, and as a matter of fact, all parties involved were in fact black, Caracter, the waitress and the officer, so theres your race card, throw it out the window. Another FACT Caracter was extremely drunk and obnoxious when he entered the resturaunt, insisting on his own private section because he was a "celebrity" all of us at our table got a laugh because he claimed he played for the lakers but no one knew who the hell he was! lol ..... the denied him service from the beginning because of his behavior. once he was asked to leave his behavior got worse, the waitress turned to leave once the manager arrived and he GRABBED her and pulled her back pretty forcibly calling her a bitch and telling her she wasnt gonna "dis" him like that! the manager tried to call the cops but caracter took the phone, the manager then went outside and flagged down a cop. Mr. Caracter then informed the officer of his "A-List" status and told her he would have her job! he was then put into handcuffs. So heres the facts: 1.) He WAS drunk and out of hand. 2.) He did NOT hit her 3.) His actions were 100% out of line and he deserved to be arrested!
As a resident of new orleans i would like to welcome the Lakers and Laker Fans alike to our city, but PLEASE leave trash like that back in cali! Ive been to both games in new orleans this series, and its been great exciting basketball both nights. Its a shame a loser like caracter pulled a stunt like this, oh and as far as i could tell the girl wasnt pregnant! either way i have alot of respect for the lakers and their history. . . . . with that said...... GEAUX HORNETS!! we all know its a long shot, and we are huge underdogs, but 2 years ago our saints were huge underdogs and they brought us a lombardi trophy! Wish i could come watch em in L.A. but unfortunately i have a job :( and for all of you in L.A. making the trip here thurs. welcome in advance!

If anyone on this board had even half a clue about the area around this IHOP - first of all just because it is NO does not mean that drunk, disorderly, disrespectful behavior is allowed - restaraunts can refuse service for any reason but based on 1st hand accounts he was out of control. Second, if you are soem redneck racist an IHOP on CAnanl in NO is the last place you would last working longer than 1 week. Third, this guy has quite a history of personal issues. I cannot believe anyone would try to blame a waitress who was treated like this for deserving it. It isn't often you find people with more convoluted thinking than some here in NOLA, but congrats to the majority of you for doing just that.

Actually, slim, you're obviously not that familiar with New Orleans. The IHOP is on Canal St. and trust me, you won't find many, if any, whites on that part of Canal Street at 1 AM in the morning. Also, the cop was black, and I'd be willing to bet the cashier was too. You want to try again?

Wow! The Lakers can't get a break this year. I wonder what the zen master will do about this one.

A bunch of half-wits on here defending him. There's even some guy talking about understanding wanting to strike a waitress. Good lord, get it together, losers. I'm not so sure this early release program in LA is a good thing. They seem to be flocking to the LA Times comment section.

Derek was not drunk. He only pushed her out of the way. And the waitress was fat probably.

Hmmm. This incident happened early Sunday morning BEFORE the game, but the police did not disclose the information until the day AFTER the game. Someone in NBA public relations is earning their money. ;-)

Are you a complete moron or just working your way up to that?

Excellent points ... We dont know what she did to provoke him!!

----------------------------------------------------------
R r friggin kidding me? Please tell me you say this in jest! NOTHING should provoke one into battery short of self defense or the protection of others. Character, use this as a turning point and get the help you obviously need.

Derrick Caracter is an idiot. trade this fool!

CP3 > KOBE !
HA THAT EVEN HAS A NICE RING TO IT
YOU HEAR THAT LAKER FANS
PUTTING
A
VOODOO CURSE
ON
DAT ANKLE!
!

Classy post, thank you. Good luck in the playoffs, I hate Chris Paul, but would love him if he were a Laker.

"Derek was not drunk. He only pushed her out of the way. And the waitress was fat probably."

If the waitress ain't fit, you must acquit! :>

He should be cut from the Lakers. Drunk the day of a playoff game, bye bye

Character: You never got a chance on the court. Like every time you missed one shot or racked up a team foul, Jackson pulled you out seconds later. I feel like DaCoach doesn't like any of the young ones, just keeps toying with them-dropping them to D-League just to yank them back to the Big Time to...watch from the bench.

But: Men. Don't. Hit Women. Ever! Not in an IHOP where the dregs of society are out in full force, and not even in N'Orleans. If the news is true, then we REALLY don't need you on this team.

Game 4: Artest was the be(A+)st, and I agree: why didn't he see more work in the forth?

Why did Jackson keep letting S.Brown come in to ruin the team effort? Is he still pissed about being skipped over for the SixthMOTY he vowed to get this season? Shannon, you no longer deserve the minutes you still get, and I cringe each time you take Kobe's place!!

Why is Bynum STILL getting stuck vs. CP3 in D? You can almost see CP3 smile and say, 'Wow, they're still stickin' with this?!' If you're not busy fixing this obvious defect in D during the TOs, Jackson, then what exactly ARE you talking about? Which of your Bulls rings has the most bling??

Fisher: if you plow through the screens the refs are gonna call you for it. You'd think he'd learn, but I feel I gotta remind him again.

Barnes isn't back to business yet and should get his minutes restricted further. And as for Gasol...come on, hombre! Que pasa, Pau?!

They can still do this series in Six, and they can still eek out another Ring this season, but they're NOT looking like Champions in any way, shape or form. No doubt about it: the highest mountaintop is starting to look like a real reach for this team...

Lakers in 6

Kinda like Smush Parker, and we know what happened to him.

S. Perkins you have completely lost your mind or you live under a rock. Hate the Lakers if you want but to say they're an embarrassment. You should be embarrased making tose comments

Thank you S Perkins for your comment you posted.
The Laker team will be encouraged. That's the way it is, I think,
with intelligent folks like Lakers. They will see anything
and use it to motivate themselves, even some comments like some.
They do have ups and downs, and their rebound still needs work, but did you ever see a dirty play by them like some other team players- never.
They always play with sportsmanship, always.
I always see spirit and pride when I watch them play.
I see pursuit of excellence.
As a long time LA resident, I am extremely proud of the Lakers,
they are the pride of Los Angeles, and I will always watch their games.
