Kobe Bryant appears to direct gay slur toward referee during Lakers-Spurs game [Updated]

After receiving his 15th technical foul of the season, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant sat down on the bench and appeared to direct a gay slur toward referee Bennie Adams.

The TNT telecast captured Bryant's outburst during the Lakers' 102-93 victory Tuesday over the San Antonio Spurs. He hit his seat before sitting, threw a towel and then yelled "Bennie!" before appearing to mutter the homophobic slur. That prompted TNT announcer Steve Kerr to say, "You might want to take the cameras off of him right now, for the children watching from home."

[Updated at 11:02 a.m.: An NBA spokesman said the league would review the incident, which prompted Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, to release a statement calling on Bryant and the Lakers to publicly address the issue.

"What a disgrace for Kobe Bryant to use such horribly offensive and distasteful language, especially when millions of people are watching," the HRC said in a statement. " Hopefully Mr. Bryant will recognize that as a person with such fame and influence, the use of such language not only offends millions of LGBT people around the world, but also perpetuates a culture of discrimination and hate that all of us, most notably Mr. Bryant, should be working to eradicate. Bryant and the Lakers have a responsibility to speak up on this issue immediately. America is watching.”]

A Lakers spokesman didn't offer any official comment, but said Bryant planned to release a statement soon. Lakers Coach Phil Jackson spoke in general terms regarding Bryant's technical foul after the game.

Read Kobe Bryant's statement here.

"I think he's frustrated and it's normal he would be frustrated. He didn't shoot the ball particularly well tonight," Jackson said of Bryant's 27-point effort on eight-of-21 shooting. "He was aggressive and got a foul call he disputed later and was rung up for. Now he's against the edge."

Should Bryant pick up his 16th technical Wednesday in the Lakers' season finale at Sacramento he would be suspended for the first game of the 2011-12 season. Technical counts reset for the playoffs.

What a bunch of retards.

Kobe sucks. Period, hope the Lakers will be swept in the first round of playoffs. We don't need anymore disgusting people on TV.

anybody here pulling out that 'freedom of speech' card in defense of Kobe are irresponsible. C'mon people, kids are watching these games on TV, would you want your very young kids hearing those words from a very popular, very influential public figure? Stop for a moment being a fan of Kobe, being a fan of the Lakers and think about it objectively. We live in a civilized society and that demands a certain kind of respect for people and calls for responsible actions, which Kobe failed to display in this case.

He should be fired, they would fire a white player for using the "N" word. Once again this just shows the double standards in the black community.

Excuse me, "Lakers no more " buth have you seen the commecials that air during that TNT broadcast. I suppose you don't mind the senseless garbage that is shown there to what should be family friendly tv. Get a reality check and look around, what he says should not matter anywhere in the world, he is only an athlete. If I said as slur like that no body would care, but someone like Kobe and he is the anti christ. He is only an athlete, not the Moral Leader of this world. Stop looking to people like that to be role models.

Give him a medal

They should give him a $100000 bonus

@paolo: yeah, gays are MOST of the problem since they can't seem to keep their traps shut when something trivial like this happens! and i'm sorry for the many gay friends you have lost because they had no self esteem! again, GIVE ME A BREAK! everybody just gotta "man the f--- up!" this is stupid! please don't compare this with the troubles that gay folk put up with in regions like in the middle east! and fyi, me and my "gay" son/daughter get along just fine! get a life!

While $100,000 is a pittance for Kobe's income, I say screw Chief Nazi David Stern and don't pay the fine. What would the NBA do? Forbid their number one start from playing?

This demonstrates that trying to legislate "being nice" never works in the real world.

When fascism comes to America it will be carrying a pink swastika wrapped in a rainbow flag. (And it has) The people who brought us the Nazi "Brown Shirts" are back but this time wearing pink boas. Read the new "Pink Swastika" by Scott Lively and Kevin Abrams to learn who is behind so called, "gay" politics.
Whenever a minute minority wields the power to intimidate and punish an individual over the speaking of a word, however objectionable there must be fascism involved. Beware the "pink mafia".

Darth Stern, you're a tool. That's all.

Kobe should have been fined again for hitting his teammate and throwing an item before he sat down.. Watch the video.
Kobe, please control yourself in future games.

Ah, the sheer beauty of Political Correctness. Instead of being punished for lying, you face more severe punishment for telling the truth. Recall Jimmy the Greek, who was run when he said we were better suited physically than our white counterparts in athletic competition.
Only the queers can call a queer a queer.

As a long time Spurs fan, I really don't give a rip what happens to Kobe. I do want him around for the playoffs just in case the Lakers advance far enough to face the Spurs. No excuses, no prisoners.
However, the thought-police have overreached, once again.

Polictical correctness or not it is really all about common decency. No one is trying to shove PC down your throats. When one is a public figure like KB they have to know that the world is watching them including impressionable kids and adults. I do not think any one here will like their kid to call a ref a F#$ in a school game. If not then why is it ok for Koby to do so. What he did was bad because of the context in which it was done. A lot of kids(and adults) want to emulate him so his actions have far-reaching consequences.

A few thoughts:

I wonder what the HRC & other groups feel about the gay man on KNBC news last night - he was asked about this & he, a gay man, said he uses the term when he refers to others of the gay community; I have yet to hear anyone call him out.

For 16 years, I worked for a black guy, a friend, & he was always careful of using disparaging remarks on any community, yet another back co-worker would use the N word, when referring to others of color - was that right ?

And what about Michael on this very board, on 4/13, at 1:50 PM, he says " what a bunch of retards". Isn't that wrong & hurtful to those who are, or family/friends of a mentally retarded person? I say yes.

While Kerr was right in his thought process, as an analyst, it was not his place to make an editorial comment, that said, I do feel Kobe was wrong as he himself declared.

Then we have the likes of Lantz & Bootydog, seemingly condoning Kobe's actions - how wrong is that ?!

And I agree w/ the poster that said he doesn't watch TNT as we always get stuck w/ Jeff Van GuMby ! That clown is so heavily biased against the Lakers - like the old days when we were forced to sit thru extremely biased comments from Laker-Hating Tommy Heinson & then Bill Russell, both of the Celtics & they were ALWAYS assigned the Laker games!

But I disagree w/ his point of Local TV & Stu & Joel - remember, they are paid by the Lakers,
