Rick Friedman Reader Comment of the Day:"The gift Lamar should give his teammates is FULL focus and 100% effort and intensity for the rest of the playoffs! Ignore the reality show garbage until July!" -- NuggetsCountry

Phil knows he's got a Ferrari this year. He's just got it purring along. Trying a few things in 2nd & 3rd
gear. Knows he's got several more gears, but sees no need to even try them now. Hasn't even floored
it yet when the NBA cops aren't looking, but knows he can lay a patch of smoke & rubber a block
long if he ever needs it. But yeah, Sonny Belfast, Phil knows (and YOU know) he may not even need
to floor it this year at all. But just for the heck of it, I think he will. @CORNERJ

In my mind's eye, the Lakers and Celtics are rushing towards each other in the fashion that they have
in years past. Matching each other, blow-for-blow, against all-comers until the time to meet arrives.
They are looking squarely in the others direction while they simultaneously brush aside any with the
misguided notion that they are contenders. It is the same as how Bruce Lee will casually vanquish all
OF the Big Boss' henchmen on his way to the real dance. It is about Boston. It has always been about
Boston. Boston is the only franchise that has earned our RESPECT...and our DERISION. @ FEARLESS

I think a better question would be are any Euro NBA players NOT considered soft.

Posted by: LRob | April 20, 2011 at 12:48 PM
----------------------------------------------------------
Not really, I mean do we ever hear soft with Rudy Fernandez, Calderon, kristic, pechulia? Heck, I mean we never hear it with Gasol's own brother Marc. Soft only appears when Pau Gasol plays.

OMG.. finally a basketball related thread!! long live medina!

Look for more hard shows to stop Paul as he goes past the pick to give DF/SB/SB time to get OVER the pick and catch up and then big fade back to his man. That's what Lakers were doing in 17-1 run. ESPN.com (5 on 5) article interviews Person about this exact thing.

Plus ball denial after Paul gives it up........

All that can waste up to 15 seconds of clock if done right.

"Not really, I mean do we ever hear soft with Rudy Fernandez, Calderon, kristic, pechulia? Heck, I mean we never hear it with Gasol's own brother Marc. Soft only appears when Pau Gasol plays.

Posted by: Magia32 | April 20, 2011 at 01:11 PM "

It mostly applies to the power forward and centers. Krstic, Bargnani, Dirk and Pau are called soft pretty often.

LOL

I didn't read all the way down on the post! A RFRCOTD! Wow - thanks MM! Never thought I wrote anything read by anybody. ;-)

@NUGGETSCOUNTRY ... Congrats on the Friedman. Your suggestion for Lamar was perfect. Tonight we should see a refocused and reinvigorated front court. Time to make sure to pound the ball inside and destroy the Hornets tonight. Time for the Lakers to all be on the same page.
...
I also wanted to clarify something you had said about passing the ball to post players. You said it was important to hit them on the move. I said it was important to hit them as they get open which means the passer has to anticipate that the big is going to work to get open and have the ball arrive just as he seals his man rather than waiting for him to be open because by the time that pass arrives, the defense may well have adjusted. Were we saying the same thing or were you saying something differntly.
............................................................
TOM

Congrats Nuggets Country for the Friedman award...way overdue.

~~Absolutely correct Sir, from now on all Laker players focus only on the playoffs and three peat. Don't even bother to sleep with your wife till June. lol!

LT,

Thanks for the Roll Call. Let's go Lakers!

"We're we saying the same thing or were you saying something differntly.
............................................................
Posted by: LakerTom | April 20, 2011 at 01:20 PM
"

Nope - we are both saying the same exact thing in different ways, for all of us who play(ed) the game.

Basically you cannot wait for a 3 count or whatever once the big has established an open position to then pass to him. I hated that delay when I played center! My forte as a 4 was to quick hit the 5 on the move at the perfect time as he got to his open spot. The Lakers seem to wait too long to hit a sealed Laker big and that just means other fingers/hands of their sagging opponenets have had time to adjust to that opening. That long delay causes Lakers so many turnovers in the paint that they get discouraged and hesitate even more when doing that quick/hard entry pass later on.

I also see too many NBA players who don't utilize ball fakes. I used to start ball fakes to another player even while the 5 was starting his move, thus getting my man to drop his hands out of my real intended target path. Not enough Basketball 101 played for my tastes in the NBA - one reason I like watching WNBA games.

I haven't been reading every section of the blog the last few days (I tire of the swamp of trolls that usually follows a playoff loss), so this may have already been mentioned but...

If ever there was a time for a conspiracy theory, it would be now... when the team OWNED BY THE NBA is beating the defending champs in a series.

Coincidence or consipiracy?

You decide.

"Don't even bother to sleep with your wife till June. lol!

Posted by: Edwin Gueco | April 20, 2011 at 01:23 PM
"

I always had weak legs after "sleeping with the 'wife'-for-the-day/night" and was useless game day - so good point! Even though you meant it as a joke.

Thanks for the congrats!

I love Kobe Bryant. he the only player that plays hard. why should he pass to lazy players who are tired because of their outside interests. distractions all year and now these players think they can focus nows.
kobe keep ball all the time till the actors and singing stars come basketball players again
Phill jacksons no do anything why. how he not ctiizise for bad job

NuggetsCountry,

I always enjoy your posts and I'm sure many others are reading and appreciating them.
Nice to see you were acknowledged.

I missed the battles I had with Mud at least he had some intelligence. I feel like I am arguing with mentally impaired persons. Being a leader is hard man. I liked mamba24 but I had to ban him for conduct unbecoming. I whipped Sean to such an extent that he was never seen or heard from again.
Posted by: island priest24 | April 20, 2011 at 01:21 PM

I recall some old toothless geezer from Sodom & Gomorrha times used to mentor mamba24 and look trouble it got him into, unfortunate!

Is this team for real? The hip, the media and the big egos continue to provide entertainment and no victories. No preparation and no commitment so why are we here six game victory for the Hornets. Thank you Lakers for an interesting season it has been a long and enduring.

Lets stick with BB, so next time please do not invite me to wresting match or suggest that i drink beer, fair? We will exchange notes after the game!!
Posted by: Norcal aka kobefan from Silicon Valley | April 20, 2011 at 12:32 PM
happy to exchange notes after the game.
re: wrestling matches ... Next time don't open your fat mouth about me
being a couch potato & I won't invite you to the dojo.

As strange as it sounds, I think the NBA makes more money the sooner the Hornets are eliminated. The NBA may be keeping that team afloat but the team is not good for ratings and it doesn't serve the league's best interests if they advance far in the playoffs.

Excellent job on the roll call Laker Tom! Congrats on The Friedman Nuggets Country. I'm totally with you with respect to the gift of FULL focus and 100% effort and intensity. EVERY Laker player needs to give it!
Let's take care of business tonight - WE GOT THIS!
"...I'm a rolling thunder, a pouring rain
I'm comin' on like a hurricane
My lightning's flashing across the sky..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx9FRbeVcr0

Bay of LA,

Don't be silly. The longer the series goes, the more revenue the Hornets will generate. More games equals more ticket, television, radio, merchandise, and concession revenues for the Hornets, ESPECIALLY when facing a major draw like the Lakers. It also creates a bigger fan base in New Orleans by drawing more interest in the team. There were several suspiciously poor calls in crunch time in game 1, and I'm not one to underestimate the level evil from Darth Stern.

jefe. Nice one! here's another AC/DC gem.

lol i forgot to post the link.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6os7N_8gtA

@LakerTom
thanks for the roll call!

@LRob
Nice Switchfoot selection- they are my favorites to come out of S.D.

@jefe101 and ChicNstu
nice AC/DC selections

@Jon K.
I wish I could feel a little sorry for Shaq, but that little respect I was clinging on to left as soon as he signed with the Celtics.

Since LRob posted a "stars" song, I'll go with this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZG7PqE7Sds

Please tell me I'm not the only one who refuses to watch Kobe's PSA...

I thought this was over.

Game day is here!

Nice to see a roll call but for a moment I thought the long awaited return of Mamba24 had occured until I scrolled down and saw that the post was from Laker Tom.

LongTimeLakerFan, I would be suspicious too if my own eyes had not witnessed the uninspired play by the Lakers in game 1, excluding Kobe and Ron.

Hopefully the Lakers can start showing signs of being the defending champions tonight and get the championship ball rolling.

@Triangulator.. With all due respect byron scott level 4 coach and same level as adelman? Not in this lifetime or next!

@Truth.. Questionable calls indeed.. Everytime lakers got closer in the 4th whistle whistle.. Did u see that ridiculous call in 3rd qtr when bellinelli was guarding artest in the post and he fell to the ground like he got freakin tasered.. Artest was barely even moving that play (and right in front of the ref as if they couldn't see it) haha

What kind of NBA PG cannot slash, penetrate, finish, pass, steal...?

Posted by: Psycorp

-
A PG playing in the Triangle offense system. The PG's role is to bring the ball across the mid-court, make the entry pass to the post player and wait in the wings to provide the spacing that the Triangle requires. From Paxson to Fisher, the PG has never been the assist leader in the Triangle; that assist role belongs to the 'trigger' .

If you recall, PJ would yank out Farmar whenever he tried to slash and penetrate and not follow the playbook.

"star spangled banner", Jimi:

@Lakertom.. Like bako laker fan u had me goin good there for a second.. U must be getting some serious rollcall withdrawals.. That's was very clever to post the rollcall as first post on thread like mamba on gameday too.. I scrolled down anxiously but found ur name at bottom much to my chagrin.. :-)

and from my heyday:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhBFRNBxT_o

I hope the Lakers leave it all on the court (stage) like Janis does!

"It ain’t fair, daddy it ain’t fair what you do,
I see what you’re doin’ to me and
you know it ain’t fair.
And I say oh, whoa whoa now baby
It ain’t fair, now, now, now, what you do
I said hon’ it ain’t fair what, hon’
it ain’t fair what you do.
Oh, here you gone today and all I ever wanted to do
Was to love you"

Tell the PSP the truth; you really are Jordan Farmar aren't you?

Yello

What happened to talking in 3rd person? The PSP is disappointed.

Thanks

Laker Tom- Great job with the roll call and nice to see the BLOG CRUE growing.

Mamba24- Report for duty this week or else you'll be AWOL. Your leave ends today.

MYBRF

Colorado loves our World Champion Lakers!

forgot to add this on my previous posts:

Congrats NuggetsCountry on the Friedman!
Nice Janis selection as well- talk about givin the crown their money's worth!

Selig just took over the Dodgers. Wow.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

So, by limiting the choice of players to "only" those who understands the maddening complicated intricacy of the triangle at the expense of speed, athleticism, basketball skills etc... the Lakers end up with one-dimensional useless players such as Fisher and Walton?

It's true that under the system you don't need PG who can slash, penetrate, pass, finish... but wouldn't it help to have the kind of player who does? wouldn't it be handy to be able to at least score a few cheap points off fast-breaks than having to rely 100% on the set offense all the time?

PS: Come to think of it, Laker nation should be eternal grateful that Phil Jackson came AFTER Kobe Bryant. Phil would have NEVER drafted Kobe Bryant who was probably the furthest thing to his typical Triangle zombies... I mean players.

OUTSTANDING! Saw Jimi live once! See my post above for another from that era!

& thanks to LakerTom; Edwin Gueco; Art; jefe101 for the shout-out on the RFRCOTD & others

I wonder who Selig appoints as the trustee for the Dodgers...

@NuggetsCountry,

As Robin Williams said, if you remember the 60's, you weren't really there...

Cheers,

mclyne, when you mentioned PSA, I thought you were referring Kobe's prostate. lol!

~~ nice but this is already history, message has been put across.

I like to converse with everyone in fact tried my best to be fair in the middle grounds and invite unlikely visitors to the mainstream. Unfortunately, it is futile to correct people w/ demented minds who have ulterior motives in coming to this blog. They are bad vibes to our team and gives them bad luck. We can deal with decent leprechauns or that silly belfast in Asia but to convince a troll to play in a level playing field is like having a contract with the devil. My final conclusion - OSTRACIZE ALL TROLLS using different handles from kobe fan, etc. etc. and multiple other names. If you don't know them, flush them out!

one of my Jimi favs that is also apropos to our Laker rooting situation:

Thanks mclyne!

@PSP.. Haha.. My apologies but I'm afraid I cannot master the art of speaking in the third person.. Much like the martial arts it requires discipline n confidence much of which I do not have.. I don't want to butcher the delivery like lecrab and totally embarass myself in the process. Need ur tutelage if I am to continue to follow speaking in the third person path.

Well, just look at what happened at the only other NBA team that is running the Triangle, Minenesota Timberwolves. Their #1 draft pick for 2009, Jonny Flynn, a dominant, slashing/penetrating PG, who actually had a better debut at Syracuse than Carmelo Anthony, has been relegated as a bench player under Kurt's version of the Triangle.

"There must be some kind of way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I cant get no relief
"

Let there be relief from Game 2 on! 16 wins to go!

@Laker Tom........ Thanks for the Bandwagon Day Roll Call!! I think we all needed that. Congrats to Nugget Country on the Friedman! The Lakers will SHOW UP BIG TIME tonite!!!

@NUGGETS COUNTRY ... Thanks for your response on passing into the post. I also hate when a big has position but doesn’t get the pass. Nothing more discouraging for a player in our type of offense to work hard to get open and then end up being ignored or worse have the pass come too late and thus turn the ball over or get called for three seconds. I predict it will be safe for us old guys to watch tonight’s game without the paramedics being on call. Maybe we can invite Sean to watch with us. Lol.

@LT – you’re even kinder than me. That first game was an F. And THANKS for the game day roll call.

@ChicNstu – I agree.

@Triangulator - I said my first choice is still BShaw. But I do like Adelman over Sloan and Van Gundy. I did enjoy your coach classifications.

@Nuggets – congrats on the Friedman.

@Jon K – It’s sad to see Shaq go out like that.

Not really, I mean do we ever hear soft with Rudy Fernandez, Calderon, kristic, pechulia? Heck, I mean we never hear it with Gasol's own brother Marc. Soft only appears when Pau Gasol plays.

Rudy (yes), Calderon (double yes), Krstic (triple yes), Pachulia... (absolutely not) ding, ding...you have a winner. Also, definitely not Mark Gasol.

Today has been a great day so far. Blasting some Jimi and Janis, and a RFRCOTD! Can't get much better than that, until the Lakers throw down tonight and start our journey towards 16 wins!

Peace and smiles to the other old guys/gals out there who still have it from the '60s!

Wish I could still dunk like my days in the mid 70s though!

"Yeah kobe is great but he cares more about his legacy than playing winning ball. Winning ball is about getting everyone involved. Look at the greatest of all time, Jordan he was so secure that he used to take a quarter or even two quarters to get his team going."

@IslandPriest

That is moronic! Isn't legacy in the NBA defined by winning? This isn't baseball, no one remembers stats only rings. If it's all about stats then why isn't the big O consider the greatest? Doesn't Kobe take a quarter or even three to get his team going most games? According to your criteria and I would have to agree the GOAT is Magic!

Thanks LRob!

I'm curious on how people are evaluating Pau. For the regular season, what grade would you give him on fulfilling his role? I would give him a B.

Posted by: LRob | April 20, 2011 at 12:46 PM

@LRob
I give him an A+ first semester and a B- the second semester. He has an incomplete for the playoffs of course. By the way I do think it was one bad game, but I do think there might be something personal going on in his life. Who knows?

@LAKER TRUTH ... Don’t underestimate the business smarts of Jerry Buss. Until Drew got injured, the Lakers were NOT looking to make a trade. Check the history if you do not believe me. That’s reality. But you can believe whatever you want as you always do. :-)

That is crazy that people think it was Kobe that got the Lakers motivated to make a move. Really? Seriously?

Also, definitely not Mark Gasol.

Marc is a bruiser, a true center who is at least 20 lbs heavier than Pau. He has also developed a decent mid-range jumper and a decent defender who has to guard another 7-footer HOF'er in their series with the Spurs.

@LRob: I would give Pau an overall B, with a declining grade recently. The problem is we need A work out of him to compliment Kobe et al. Hopefully he gets back to that A work that pundits were granting him with a pass to HOF, if he kept it up, earlier in the season.

I would give him a B as well. He had too many lulls of multiple games where it looked as if "Imposter Pau" suited up.

@NuggetsCountry
Jimi live?- oh man, I am truly jealous. You were able to witness two of my favorite decades of rock music- the sixties and seventies.

LRob,

"It’s sad to see Shaq go out like that."

You mean as a Celtic? Yeah, it's horrible, but that's the choice he made.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

You decide.

Posted by: LongTimeLakerFan | April 20, 2011 at 01:31 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't be silly. The longer the series goes, the more revenue the Hornets will generate. More games equals more ticket, television, radio, merchandise, and concession revenues for the Hornets, ESPECIALLY when facing a major draw like the Lakers. It also creates a bigger fan base in New Orleans by drawing more interest in the team. There were several suspiciously poor calls in crunch time in game 1, and I'm not one to underestimate the level evil from Darth Stern.

Posted by: LAKER TRUTH | April 20, 2011 at 02:20 PM

----------------------------------------------
You guys are joking, right?

You're going to complain about "suspiciously poor calls at crunch time" and yet not mention that the first 3 quarters the Lakers shot 29 Free Throws to the Hornets' 13? I guess those were all "good calls"? No wonder they call it "La-La Land" out there.

Of course MORE games means MORE revenue, just like EVERY other team in the NBA. That's not unique to the Hornets. And I guess we might as well end the Major League Baseball season now. Why bother? The Dodgers are going to win it now that they're owned by Major League Baseball.

See how stupid that sounds when its YOUR team?

So, by limiting the choice of players to "only" those who understands the maddening complicated intricacy of the triangle at the expense of speed, athleticism, basketball skills etc... the Lakers end up with one-dimensional useless players such as Fisher and Walton?

===================================================

Well said. And even if the Lakers had drafted him, Kobe'd play all of three minutes given PJ's horrid mistrust/unuse of rookies. People always get mad at me when I bring up players being wasted in the triangle because they point out (correctly) that it's brought (with the right personel) 11 championships and counting. But still, PJ isn't going to coach forever so to shape your team so specifically has it's cost. The only way you salvage the team is to get a coach that understands the Triangle to even hope at getting another championship reletively soon (Brian Shaw will hopefully get the reigns). You take the T away from a team that's built to use it and it messes them up.

The other thing that bugs me about the Triangle (this actually might have more to do with Phil than the actual T) is that we've essentially traded young legs for old ones over the last couple of seasons, basically so Phil can have players he'll actually use. Remember when Gasol first came here? We had an average age of 28 (I think) or so. Now, we fight having energy because we don't have young legs. And it's only going to get worse since we can't afford anyone of value that's young willing to take a pay cut so the current squad is what we have. Granted, we're still going to three-peat mind you but I'm curious how we're going to rebuild with the payroll we have.

Anyways, enough of that. Let's go Lakers! Give the Hornets a beatdown so bad the gods will take notice.

Nuggets Country - The award is well deserved

A few observations:

Lakers have played 83 games this year. During one 18 game stretch they went 17-1. The other 65 games they went 40-25. Maybe all they truly are is that mediocre\2nd shelf 40-25 team. Maybe we are just overating them because of what they have done the last 3 yrs.

Quick, fast pt guards do burn each other. The teams that have some success slowing them have other quick, fast perimeter players who come over to help. The Lakers have virtually no athleticism, speed, or quickness on the perimeter so they make every pt guard they face look like a future hall of famer.

Laker smalls have 'decayed' for lack of a better word. Very little athleticism and dreadful outside shooting. End result is the lane is packed. Laker bigs are swarmed.

No easy hoops for these guys. No fast breaks and no opponent has to do anything but yell and wave a hand for someone to brick a 20 footer.

Kobe has to retire from off-season basketball. Time for surgery on his fingers. He still has 5 good years left but he has to be used wisely. Team needs another guard to handle the ball and create plays so Kobe can do more off the ball scoring. He just can't shake defenders and elevate like he used to.

Maybe they can overcome their obvious weaknesses this year and still win. Don't know. But Laker mgmt has been so good I don't see them as finished with this run. Win or lose they probably challenge for it all again next year.
