Andrew Bynum hurts knee, but stays in game

Lk4xesnc Andrew Bynum went down with 9:54 left in the third quarter, holding his right knee.

Bynum stayed down for quite a while, forcing the Lakers to call a timeout and to have trainer Gary Vitti  come out on the court while the rest of the team stood around Bynum.

It appeared Bynum  became entangled with New Orleans forward Carl Landry, then the 7-foot center tumbled the court.

After a few minutes, Bynum got back up and stayed in the game.

Dodged a bullet on that one...Drew was a beast in the first half...

someone needs to knock that Landry down. He is like a pesky gnat.

-He [Bynum} acknowledges that his knees will never be fully healthy...

-Trainers learned that Bynum underwent his first knee operation when he was 12 and were concerned about his Q angle—the relationship between his pelvis, leg and foot. According to head athletic trainer Gary Vitti, a wide Q angle can affect the way the kneecap glides along the thigh bone and can also cause increased foot pronation, both common sources of injuries. "Andrew is challenged in terms of his skeleton," Vitti says.

-Bynum packs his knees with ice after every game. He wears orthotics in his shoes. His workouts with Zarzana have become so renowned that they were filmed for the Celebrity Sweat fitness DVD series. Yet he aches even when he climbs in and out of his car. He has a fear of people being around his legs, which he is forced to confront every time a guard sneaks into the paint. "You just want to get them away," Bynum says.

Point is this: If a better, healthier and more reliable Center is available then you have to "pull the trigger." It's obvious that Bynum is a skilled big man but he may never realize his full potential due to the aforementioned sections from the article.
The best thing that can happen for this team is that they win the championship with a healthy Bynum so that another team can continue the gamble with his ailing and compromised knees. As far as the Lakers are concerned, they have received a decent return on their risky investment. Like any other investment, you can't allow yourself to get emotionally attached; you have to know when to sell.
If the opportunity presents itself for an upgrade... I don’t think it’s a good idea to build this team’s future around Bynum. Not because he can’t play or that he’s a horrible person because from what we’ve read and seen, he’s the exact opposite. It’s all about his health and it really is as simple as that.
Bynum has been well paid for his services and if he’s as smart as he’s portrayed to be, he’ll never have to worry about earning money for the rest of his life. Not a bad return for both parties.
If Dwight forces Orlando’s hand to be traded to L.A., then you do it and Bynum can actually be relied upon to do more of what he really wants to do in Orlando. It’s a “win-win” situation.
When Kobe retires – and it will be soon – who do you think offers the best long term prospect of success: Dwight Howard or Andrew Bynum? Keep your fingers crossed that Bynum is still standing in June with a championship and a Finals MVP trophy so Dwight can force that trade! JMHO
Orlando has a real chance of getting ousted in the 1st round and if that happens – and I hope it does – Dwight is out of there one way or another. I’d rather have him on our side than having to play against him.

GO LAKERS!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ugly pesky gnat. Head looks like an odd shaped rock.

Now the switch is definitely ON. And it'll stay that way until we win the whole thing in June.

Bynum will be fine, I fervently hope. Heard its only a bruise.

14 Wins to go! Let's go Lakeshow!!!

LAKERS ALL DAY!!!

frmkt.....

The guy can be scarey .....But your post is making worry...

I would be lying if i said i had not thought about Dwight in a purple and gold away strip...

Healthy Bynum with good knees makes me not remember Dwight so much....

I like Bynum in the groove.

Hahaha LAKERS win again.Trolls or haters will keep quiet now.lol

In my opinion, that was the key to Kobe's success this evening. He was as close to perfect as can be because he played within the "context of the offense" and "the supporting cast" was firing on all cylinders. Great win and it's fair to say that this series is "officially" over. Lakers in 6.

Posted by: frmkt | April 22, 2011 at 10:40 PM

If this series is "officially" over, why Lakers in 6? More like Lakers in 5.

Kobe is the "offense". He creates the "context". The problem is that "the supporting cast" is not firing on as many cylinders as possible "every game" or "when needed".

I know you don't understand "all of the above", because you don't agree/like the "IDEA" that Kobe eats FIRST.

So quiet on the Lakers front. Looks like the Kobe bashers/haters drank to much Black Mamba venom and are tamed.

If the lakers threepeat, finals MVP trophy wont be given to anyone but Kobe. Just like how in the lakers last threepeat, when Shaq was given the finals MVP.

Hahaha haters still hiding at this time.lol

Needed victory to have the HCA back. The Lakers need one more on Sunday. If they return 2-2, nothing was accomplished. And PJ does not like long flights for a 6th game in NO. It's OK to have CPR play like a pedestrian and Landry have his 20 points. But the rest of the hornets in the nest have to be annihilated.

Feels like Artest is really itching to guard somebody of "value" (Durant, Melo, LBJ).

I really like the new play of Kobe and LO on the right side. They both can P&R, ISO or whatever the defense gives them. Very efficient. LO can curl and have his lefty mini-hook that is unguardable. No defender will help especially when Kobe is hitting the 3.

It was great to see that the Lakers exploited all the mismatches the NO offered. Looks like certain things (like the above mentioned plays) were "on hold" as secret weapons for the playoffs.

The camerawork pointing "all of the sudden" to Bynum on the floor was weird and a little shocking. Like in the previous game when Kobe was out of the picture after he hit the chair. In both cases, some of the cameramen were not focused on the plays to show how it happened. They were focused what players do/say "on the bench".

The priorities. :-)

The refereeing sucks in all the series and all the games. David Stern took the fun out of the playoffs with his rules imposed during the regular season. Depending on the refereeing crew, each game feels like a different sport.

What will the "Easter Bunny" have in his basket for NO on Sunday? Looks like David Stern will need some overtime or extracurricular/spiritual activities. Not his cup of TEA.

hahahahaha haters still hybernating. Its nice and peaceful here.lol

Not quite there little guy.

I was here long before you arrived,
and will probably be here long after you are gone.

Are we getting excited?
You are up on Noluns 2 to 1.
Wow! Everyone is shocked.
It's a big deal! No, it really is!

Hey, did I call it on the injury or not?
Admittedly, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be,
or so it seems now, but you can get injured during practice too.
Hope he makes it to the next game.

(Drews a good kid, but he's injury prone.
He says so himself.
Glad he made his millions already).

In the meantime...
just keep high-fiving those big W's over the mighty Hornets.
I actually hope you make it past them.
I'd prefer to watch the Fakers get a much more serious spanking later.
Too much fun to pass up.

Go SF Giants and Niners!
Go Sacramento Kings!
Go San Jose Sharks!
Go Oakland A's and Raiders!

Adrain, shouldn't you be sleeping?
Does your momma know you prowl the cyberspace late at night?
Seriously, son.

Sonnybelfast

@frmkt..well said, dunno why eople can't understand that.I like bynum too,he's not better than D-Howard though, that's a fact.Even If Bynum is a lil better on O.D-12 is a lot better on D.However people were talking about freak accidents on his teamates feet. The last two times was on the opponents feet..Anyhow preasantly the mission is a 3peat.In the future o well....

Awesome game for the lakeShow and the black mamba! Let's go, Lakers!

Fewer hours spent video gaming,
and more hours spent working on that English.
Classic Laker fan.

At least it's looking much less likely that the Fakers will soon be
relegated to being third best team in the sewer, instead of second.

Go Sacramento Kings of Basketball!

Sonnybelfast

What's probably the mist disturbing thing is a kings fan speaking like glorious frnchise that has banners covering a stadium... It's comical to read posts that contain enough hot air to send 15 people in a balloon around the the world.... Keep dreaming .... Dreamer

Posted by: London Laker | April 23, 2011 at 04:57 AM

I get confused when he talks about almost anything.

It's a tough job trying to be objective, much less tell the truth
about anything Lakers here.

When he does so, it often results in panty-bind...
Just ask Tarugo, er, A-drain.
He's got it bad!

Go SF Giants!

How sweet.

She uses her moniker to tell us her age.

Tell me...have you chosen that moniker because it would be impossible to determine you are anywhere near that age otherwise?

Delete the "Thirty" and add eleven to the two...
and you are still legal here. Just trying to help out.
Now you and Drain go back to bed...

Go San Francisco Forty-Niners (Jury is still deliberating on the Tom Laker)

2 down...14 to go.....Lakers 3 peat and beyond

HAHAHA!!! FUNNIEST COMMENT OF THE DAY!

Thank you Thirty2.

LAKERS ALL DAY!!!

Well...in all sincerity, it has truly been a practice season.

The boys, three bonified All-Stars among them,
and a supporting cast which, with its ups and downs,
has steadfastly started to gel,
are really beginning to show that they can win it all.

There have been doubters, for sure, but now that the cards
are all on the table, they are finally beginning to give us a glimpse
of what they are capable of this year.

They are not there yet, but by the time Finals arrive,
I fully expect them to clean house.
They'll be even better, much better, next year.

Will anyone have an answer for these guys?
Without a doubt, this Miami Heat team is the team to beat.

Go Sacramento Kings (California's Team!)

Sonnybelfast

The Miami Cheat.

After the Lakers tear this Cheat apart, I wonder what will these ho hums say.

LAKERS ALL DAY!!!

Eventually, one of these days, the Lakers will actually lose a series and the title streak will come to an end.

And Sonny will be here to tell us all how he was right.

When this happens, I'll look up in the rafters and say something like "yeah, they lost... but look at how many rings they just won!"

Just ask Tarugo, er, A-drain. He's got it bad! Posted by: Sonnybelfast

Mark Medina.....

After Sonnybelfast criticized you, he called Adrian, 'Tarugo'. Fyi, Tarugo is *also* a slang word for Dick aka Penis.

http://www.bansa.org/dictionaries/tgl/?dict_lang=tgl&type=search&data=tarugo

Sonnybelfast = Low-life extraordinaire.

Carl Landry plays so well against us. I'm surprised Kobe hasn't tried to get him on our team. He's that classic somewhat shorter post-up guy. A Barkley, Adrian Dantley.

Eventually, one of these days, the Lakers will actually lose a series and the title streak will come to an end.

And Sonny will be here to tell us all how he was right.

You are spot on that the Fakers will lose.
If they get past the lowly Noluns Hornets,
and I hope they do,
it will be loads, and I mean loads of fun,
all the way over here in Chiang Mai...
I'm already lining up foreign nationals from
everywhere to enjoy the spectacle in HD,
at a local pub.

And yes, I will be right here,
because as I have been saying since last summer,
your horses are too old
(as I said they are),
you failed to secure HCA
(as I said you would),
and you won't have the kick you will need to win the race against the younger, and equally talented thoroughbreds in the league.
(which I also told you was clearly the case)
And Yes, these are all facts.

But it's interesting, not surprising, but interesting that you would
acknowledge your entirely predictable next move...
which would be to look up in the rafters to "past glory",
even though it couldn't be more tainted,
or meaningless to anyone but you.

I guess you're giving us a preview of what to expect here...
But no need...we already know...more of the same.

Go Sacramento Kings of Basketball (California's Team...if you're a Californian, welcome aboard...you can restore your honor)

Sonnybelfast

Sonnybelfast

Don't worry though...big bucks and the glitter of Hollywood speak the loudest.

The NBA will have your team back in business in no time.

Say, maybe three or four years.

In the meantime, you can bask in the glory of your tainted past.

And it is past.

Go San Franciso Giants (World Champions)!
Go San Francisco Forty Niners (The only team never to lose a Superbowl)!
Go San Jose Sharks (Up 3 to 1 over the Los Angeles Kings...oxymoron)
Go Oakland Raiders!
Go Oakland A's!
Go Sacramento Kings of Basketball (California's Team)!

Sonnybelfast

Drew's knee brace has definitely saved him a few times, which begs the question of why he doesn't wear one on the other knee.

BTW, I've noticed several long posts here. Please stop it.

Sonny. Wasn't your predicition about last nights game. You guys will be whining after the younger, quicker, blah blah, _______ fill in the blank with OKC, Portland, Miami, Chicago, Sac-to twn cows; oh wait, the cows didn't make the playoffs. But hey they have that WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS banner to remind their fans how great they were 10 years ago. And DeMarcus is a model player and rek is the greatest and all those quick quards like Fransico. Yea I bet they win it all next year as these lakers are all washed up. Just like the last two years. I'm curious, is it a chemical imbalance that gives you satisfaction on coming onto another teams blog and spewing venom....or do you have no one to talk to?

The Miami Cheat.

After the Lakers tear this Cheat apart, I wonder what will these ho hums say.

LAKERS ALL DAY!!!

Posted by: JovBatz24 | April 23, 2011 at 06:19 AM

Here's a flash.

The Heat will most definitely be in the Finals this year,
and I'm rather astonished to hear a Faker fan acknowledge it.

Unfortunately, the Fakers won't have the chance to
"tear this Cheat" apart, not this year anway.

Go San Francisco Forty Niners!
Go Hollyweird NFL team, the what's-their-names!

Sonnybelfast

Guys,

How many signs form god are we going to need before we get the message that Andrew's knees can;t be counted on?

I love Andrew, but the knee thing has become an unavoidable issue. The guy can't go 2 weeks without having a near-massive knee blowout, let alone an entire season or career.

I think we need to keep one eyeon Andrew's knee and the other on some unnamed guy in Orlando. We have to; lest our heads be forever stuck in sand.

Wes

Sonny Belyas their goes to show how immature and ignorant are you.Your queens and miami cheat will never win a ring as long as Kobe around so keep on dreaming dude as you always are a real troll and a sore bitter loser.hahaha.lol

"He's a monster!"

My wife said that after watching Bynum play last night. Its the first time this year, she's seen Bynum play. "He's like a whole nother player out there. When did he start playimg like this? He's so confident, and dominant. He could score 40 points easily if it wasn't for Kobe and the other Lakers."

Great to see the Lakers playing like themselves, dissappointing to see a piece of trash ruining this post. Of course what can you expect from a miserable kings fan.

sonnybefast,s. perkins what a bunch winers. Tearing somebody
or something that has been successful does NOT bring you up
nor does it increase your IQ get a life. Trying to emulate successful people and successful organizations are what all
the wannabes do Maverick.

>>>If the lakers threepeat, finals MVP trophy wont be given to anyone but
>>> Kobe. Just like how in the lakers last threepeat, when Shaq was given the
>>> finals MVP

That's okay...

Bynum can get the MVP ON THE NEXT THREE-PIZZLE!!!!

OHHHHHHH YEAH.

>>>How impressive. The Lakers beat a mediocre at best team with one of their
>>> best players David West injured. Oh yeah...I'm really impressed.

Exactly. I totally agree with S. Perkins on this point.

But the Lakers are just having a playoff appetizer. The main course is still two rounds away.

I'm sure after the Lakers win the finals, S Perkins will be saying something like "Sure, they won a threepeat because David Stern helped them" or something like that.

Lakers just play around, they dont care about nothing right now. They will coast into the finals and win because Kobe is the best player ever top play the game.

Ron artest is the second best player ever to play the game! LOL I think we should trade Pau Gasol, he frustrates me when im watching games every time.

Kobe will coast into the finals and win it all just like the last 2 years. The losses are because the NBA needs money and more games mean more money? Stupid laker haters don't understand David Stern and his money hungry ways, that is why we lose not because the hornents gave us a challenge.

MM - It is something you need to look into. Should a troll be allowed to come on your blog and dominate it with non-sensical posts, denegrating your loyal supporters, and now using vulgar terms in doing so?

I'm only saying this because you have stated in the past, you are always looking for suggestions to improve the site. I know you want a healthy blog, with sometimes spirited debate. But when does somebody cross the line? Sure, YOU have to decide that. But if you listen to your customers here, many don't come around anymore when trolls are allowed to dominate or control your blog.

I admit, a few can be fun, and can spice up the place. But overbearing, persistent, and nonsensicle postings hurts the atmosphere here. Since I've come back, I've noticed the quantity and quality of comments is less from inciteful posters. I feel its directly related to the trolling by ones who's only purpose is to disrupt the continuity of the blog. Like the troll was doing this morning.

Its just like this. If I come into a restaurant and see it full of cockroaches. No matter how good the food is, and no matter how hungry I am, I'm going to leave. And that's what you have here. Many good patrons have left and gone to other sites, which is really sad to see. You are taking the big lead, but the posters comments make for a well rounded place for others to want to come here. Working together, it draws and keeps people coming. Persistent trolling drives people away as it brings down the quality of the blog.

I know its a tough call for you and you have to balance all these things out. That's why I'm giving you just my opinion like others here. Its listening to others, while weighing out the needs of the LA Times, will allow you to continue to make informed decisions as the blog evolves.

Thank's for all your hard work, its much appreciated.

John 'Fatty' Fatland

Sonny......

I joined the blog about a long time ago..Think Kwame, cook Smush..

Thirty2 is for the greatest player or all time..Remember that 6,9 point guard that did everything?...

Just worry about your hot air balloon tours buddy.

No entanglement. I saw a replay. Landry clearly pushed Bynum with both hands to knock him down.

Sonnybelfast: For someone who pedantically rails about Laker fans poor English/writing skills (subconscious racism towards hispanics, I assume), you sure do use a lot of misplaced commas. Looks like you sprinkle them randomly across your sentences like pixie dust. You overestimate your technical writing proficiency. Writing complete sentences is no sign of intellectual superiority (or even mediocrity, for that matter). Stick to basketball.
