Ron Artest receives new set of wheels on 'Lopez Tonight'

Any time he saw comedian George Lopez sit courtside at a Lakers game, forward Ron Artest motioned his hands as if he were operating a steering wheel.

The ongoing joke stemmed from Lopez's promising Artest in an appearance on "Lopez Tonight" after the Lakers secured the 2010 NBA championship that he would buy Artest a new car. But this was hardly just an inside joke. Artest appeared on Lopez's show Wednesday to find out Lopez really meant what he said.

Lopez presented to Artest a new ride that featured purple and gold rims and brakes, Laker colors on the interior and seating and bright yellow headlights. It also featured a surround-sound system blasting "Go Loco," a newly released single the two did together on Artest's Ball'n mixtape. And, Lopez joked, the seats recline "in case you need a little therapy."

There was no catch to this, with exception of a warning that every Laker fan would express.

"If you leave L.A," Lopez said, "the car stays in L.A."

"We ain't going nowhere," Artest quickly answered, perhaps a relief considering the numerous reports suggesting the Lakers wanted to trade him.

"Bring back another championship," Lopez then concluded.

I like Ron, I loved the car...but what a waste of air time.

Do you think George Lopez could buy an appearance by MAMBA24 as cheaply as with just a car...YES HE CAN!!!! Anytime you ready George!

I agree Magic Phil! You or I could both have made much better use of both the air time and...THE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course If I got the car I would give it to...Yes, Yes, Yes Justanothermambafan!!

George Lopez is a shout talker like Stephen A. Smith.

Annoying.

When's the last time any reporter/blogger responsible for following the Lakers actually provided video of an interview with one of the players after a game or practice?

this was written:

And I repeat, it was DFish's leadership in locker room or in the huddle that took this team over the hump. Throwing a towel and scowling and berating team mates is not what I perceive to be a leadership qualities, ANYONE can do that.

Posted by: Norcal | March 03, 2011 at 11:25 AM

my response: actually no. NOT *anyone* can throw a towel into someone's
face.

ex: So do you think LO gets pissed if Ebanks does it?

Do you think LO gets pissed if Blake does it?

Why doesn't he get pissed if Kobe does it? ummm ... Kobe was expressing
negative attitude towards something that LO did and upon reflection ...
LO agreed that Kobe had a point?

Perhaps a better way to phrase this is: I accept that you don't like it. Given
the success of the Lakers, your interpretation of Kobe's leadership seems ...
off target.

Let's say that because of D-Fish's leadership, & not Kobe's, the Lakers
would have only gotten to the NBA finals. That's a heck of a lot better than
Tim Duncan's, LBJ's, Yao Ming's, D-Wade's, D-Will's ... blah blah blah.

btw, the Drill Sargent's in the US Marine Corp respectfully disagree with
your opinion.

sorry.

hobbitmage,

Kobe Bryant is our bad cop. Derek Fisher is our good cop. They need each other and no one else on the team is qualified to fill either player's unique leadership role if one departed.

People don't get that when they rip on Derek Fisher. Without Derek's unique "good cop" role, Kobe's "bad cop" would eventually destroy team chemistry. Without Kobe's bad cop role, Derek Fisher's mature leadership would eventually be overcome by outside distractions and a lack of sustained effort.

thinking back, i remember when magic was with cap, running the show. it was reported that he worked real hard in practice, and would rip ANYONE a new one if they didn't leave all on the court, in PRACTICE!this is not an issue

@ Jon K.,

Hence, the void that was like a black hole while Fish was in GS & Utah. Fisher's halo to Kobe's horns is a necessary dichotomy in which balance is established. Good insight!

I salute you.

Hopefully we can groom Ebanks to be Ron's successor and give him some more PT next season. He'd inject some much needed athleticism and youth into our lineup.

And for the record, I haven't had a problem with Stephen A Smith ever since he was featured in the intro of Lil Wayne's Kobe Bryant song. That was classic.

To say that Kobe has poor leadership capabilities, in light of what the

HELL YEAH!! Good to see you're not laying back getting lazy with that new contract DJ!! LAKER AMIGO!! LET'S RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Changing subjects, what some people fail to understand is just how hard it is to win an NBA Championship. You have to finish fairly high in the standings and then win 4 straight series against usually strong opponents and everything has to go right! It ain't that easy. Do I think we can win a 3rd in a row, YES! However, it hasn't been an easy road thus far and until we get to the Playoffs, as much as we want every game won (ala Kobe) , focus is hard, but we'll get our "Groove On" in a few more weeks!

hobbitmage,

"To say that Kobe has poor leadership capabilities"

Where did I say that? Because I didn't.

Kobe and Derek have developed a cohesive leadership style congruent with their individual personalities and roles on the team. Kobe's "style" requires a complimentary alternate style to function effectively. That's it.

@JONK… “People don't get that when they rip on Derek Fisher. Without Derek's unique "good cop" role, Kobe's "bad cop" would eventually destroy team chemistry. Without Kobe's bad cop role, Derek Fisher's mature leadership would eventually be overcome by outside distractions and a lack of sustained effort.” Excellent point, Jon. My pick for RCOD. Hope your job search is bearing fruit. It would be hard to have to return to Ohio, although we have won two title with you there.

@DBDH… “Hence, the void that was like a black hole while Fish was in GS & Utah. Fisher's halo to Kobe's horns is a necessary dichotomy in which balance is established. Good insight!” Well said. Like everything in life, there are usually two sides of a coin. Kobe and Fish understand this. As do you and Jon K. Now as far as Dell Harris, I don’t think he ever understood that. LOL
………………………………………
@HOBBITMAGE… “Since when did we reach utopia where everyone understands each other on the first try, no one ever gets anything wrong, and we never raise our voices at another person?” The only place I know of where that is true is this blog. ROFLMAO. I agree with your point about Kobe’s leadership. Leadership is not always just offering carrots. Sometimes, it involves kicking butt and putting pressure on people to perform. It’s a balancing act not unlike Kobe scoring or facilitating, an art that is learned and evolved over time, a feat that has produced 5 championships.

@DJ… “This peep has arrived!” One good thing about March is that you can now buy peeps at most stores. Picked up a few 6-packs myself in the preferable original yellow color. And you don’t even have to be a Christian to enjoy this great Easter treat. The greatest holiday candy imo.

And yes, easier than winning the title. And much easier than living in a fantasy world where we suddenly get Dwight Howard but love Andrew Bynum. As Crosby, Stills, and Nash sang, “Love the one you’re with” or as Joni Mitchell croons, “You never know what you’ve got until it’s gone.”

REPENT BROTHER, REPENT!!! ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the chasm of misunderstanding is highlighted by a misunderstanding of misunderstood chasms. By accepting an accepted utopian utopia, we all benefit from the benfits of a higher level of level-headeness only seen at very high levels. For two or more people to agree upon a topic as divided as the leadership capabilities of a leader who, paradoxically speaking leads by dividing (the opponent's interior defense, that is...), all participants must agree to understand the complexities of such complex verbal discussions through discussing it. Kobe's abilities and achievements are polarizing. In contrast, Fisher's defense is a Polaroid. Since the yin-yang-flim-flam-zig-zag-ding-dong-tic-toc-oingo-boingo that is the team captain's relationship is so mind-blowing, it only makes sense that they would blow your mind. It's all psychological.

All due respect, if you ask me, it's "fricking retarded" to worry about Los Lakers one way or another. I mean the NBA exists only for one reason, and that's to sell us crap. The game in reality is incidental at this point.

So what difference could it possibly make if they have a campaign aimed specifically at selling crap to Latinos? Jon K, when you knock this campaign, aren't you really knocking capitalism?

Larry, I remember he got slammed by some for that version, but I still think it's one of the best, if not the best version of the national anthem. What is more American than Soul?

and yeah, I totally stole my line from Animal House . . .

Some thoughts...

I'm one of your peeps, Mamba24...Here I am!!

Geo. Lopez gave Ron a Sweet Ride!!...I hope Ron drives better on the freeways than he does when leading the fastbreak!

I think Kobe throwing that towel at Lamar was more of a "Come on man, you can do better than that", than in any way being reproachful or disrespectful of Lamar. Lamar and Kobe are basketball brothers, playoff seasoned and championship tested. I think it was Kobe's way of getting Lamar to just put those two misses in the rear view mirror. Kobe knows too much about the game to not be appreciative of Lamar and what he has meant to the Lakers' success in recent years. Two misses at the line aren't going to change that. He was just busting Lamar's chops.

@ GDUB....Congrats on the RCOTD and thanks for posting that link for that Anita Baker/Howard Hewett duet. I'd never heard that before, but I'll surely hear it again!

Some interesting thoughts about the toughness of defenses across different eras on the last few threads....I think that this year in particular, the NBA refs are allowing more contact on the perimeter. The no hand-checking rule, which is still suposed to be in effect, is now at the referee's discretion. The amount of pushing and shoving in the post is unbelievable in today's game. The amount of contact allowed on a jumpshooter's hand and wrists as he is releasing the ball has increased today. Years ago if you hit a man on his elbow or his follow through, it was an automatic foul. Not today.

I do think that in today's game, a flagrant foul is assessed much quicker for excessive contact. But overall, today's NBA is not that much different from that of the past (80's and 90's). The game was really skewed a few years ago, when there was zero tolerance of contact on the perimeter and strict enforcement of the no hand-checking rule. DWade benefited from that more than anyone.

Bottom line, Kobe would have been great in the 80's and MJ would be great today. How much different their games would be is up for speculation but the bottom line is that talent always adjusts and is able to shine.

@Mark G, Let them Slam away!! Nobody did it before or since as good as Marvin!!! I say AYE sir!!! As for Animal House. Yes many wise people have stolen lines from that Theatrical Masterpiece...LMAO!!!!

Mark G,

Well played, sir. Well played.

I'd argue that the business of the NBA is all about money, but the core of the attraction of that business is rooted in America (and humanity's) desire for fair competition which offers individuals (and groups) the potential to express their "best" relative to the "best" efforts of others. There's an instinctual, almost spiritual, appeal to it and "sport" itself.

THAT and it looks cool, right?

But, yeah, it's about more than money for the rest of us and when NBA marketers do lame things like "Los Lakers" as a means of targeting a demographic in a way that creates further division in society, well, I think that's marginally irresponsible, but mainly retarded.

Are you saying that he was not a phenomenal leader on team USA?

Are you saying that he was not a phenomenal leader when he took Smush &
Kwame to a 3-1 lead over PHX?

Mark G,

I've got a great idea for the Lakers marketing department!

Why don't we next week write the Lakers name in Farsi? And then the next week in Armenian? And then the next week in Korean?

I mean, give me a break. It's pandering and it's retarded.

It diminished the value of the product they're selling: The Lakers. If people need to translate the Lakers into Spanglish or Koreo-English to try to develop an emotional connection with that team, well, those are the kind of people who are not really into quality and/or basketball in the first place. They'll be at best bandwagon fans. If the Lakers go into skids, they'll be no true loyalty to the team.

A better idea to develop a true loyal following and fan base would be to keep the Lakers on broadcast TV so the hundreds of thousands of lower income Los Anegelenos who don't get cable could continue to regularly watch their team.

"Los Lakers?"

My point was that the "overhauled" roster was due to retirement and injuries. Did you expect the Celtics to not add players to replace the retired Rasheed and injured Perk? I just dont consider that "overhauling" the roster but rather just having enough players to make it through the long season!!

Lakers have 5 players that were not on the roster last year yet their roster isnt "overhauled?"

phenomenal leader? PHENOMENAL LEADER? Hell anyone that could do that is a...
BASKETBALL GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what if Kobe tossed a towel at Lamar. LO probably deserved it. Michael Jordan's castigation of teammates is legendary, yet you never hear anyone question his leadership skills. Then again, Jordan was canonized while his was still playing unlike Kobe, who still can't get a whistle when he is violently hammered by two players when he goes to the rim for all the world to see except for the three referees in the building.

Fortunately for Kobe, like Jordan before him, the end justifies the means. Jordan was rough on his teammates, but he managed 6 trips to the NBA Finals in 15 seasons. Kobe has been rough on his teammates, but he has managed 7 trips to the NBA Finals in 14 seasons.

This is another reason why Kobe will always be in ...

Let's see Kobe threw a towel at LO, MJ punched Steve Kerr out. Sounds about even to me....Carry On!

83-79.

When it was stated, not by you, that only 5 players from last year are still on your roster, you re-butted with naming people who are new this year.

"Rondo - Allan - Pierce - Garnett - Shaq - JO - West - Baby "

The true number I think should be 7 from last year that are still on the team from last year, but that's besides the point.
Why they are there was not the question, but how the high turnover will affect your team.

Reading comprehension slips by all of us one time or another.

Except when I made a mistake, I owned up and admitted I misread your remark and took it out of context in my reply.

But true to your form, you tried to spin your reply to deny you could make a mistake. Shaq, JO and West were not on the team last year.

Dude, now you're arguing just to argue.

You would have made a great member of the Soviet judicial system or Spanish Inquisition interrogators.

You're beginning to ask silly questions.

1. When I last checked Derek Fisher is co-captain of the Lakers

2. Different leadership qualities are needed and differential benefits on an All-Star team that is together for a relatively short period of time rather than a long-term team on non-All Stars. If you want to motivate someone short-term, yell at them. If you want to demotivate someone long-term, yell at them and provide little to no positive reinforcement or counter-balancing perspective.

I dont have a problem with LRob because he seems to be reasonable and fair in his opinions regarding the Celtics. I was just pointing out why we had the roster "overhaul or turnover!"

my response:

no, I'm not arguing just to argue.

in the practices & locker room.

fact - a person, on this blog, indicated that Kobe had poor leadership skills.

fact - I asked how did that person know Kobe had poor leadership skills.

fact - no one said anything about Kobe's leadership in a purely Lakers

fact - everyone is quick to address Kobe's leadership skills and no one

There is *NO* basis to support the opinion that Kobe has an inability as a
leader per Norcal's comments.

As always, you are free to disagree.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Things are always lively when you're around Mamba24. I can almost hear your enthusiasm through your text. lol.

It always amazes me how no one EVER adressess the $#!tty players Kobe was saddled with through those dark years. Kobe's this, Kobe's that, blah blah blah. Why not, "Kwame Brown has less skill than Michael Olawakandi and Smush has the talent level of a gerbil?" Because MJ (unfortunately, not even OUR MJ-Magic Johnson) is ESPN's B-ball god and they try their hardest to make sure it stays that way.

Off-topic: I never noticed even after the almost thirty years of watching/following the Lakers how innuendo could be put into the name Magic Johnson? lol.

"They call me Magic...Magic Johnson. Come home with me girl an I'll show you."
