Rival centers and the Lakers title run

Shaqbynum Anyone looking ahead to a Lakers-Celtics rubber match in June should know that Shaquille O’Neal turned 39 on Sunday.

Yes, Shaq, is the NBA’s oldest player. When Celtics GM Danny Ainge traded Kendrick Perkins to the Thunder he also rolled the dice on Shaq standing up throughout the playoffs.

Granted, there are no back-to-backs scheduled in the playoffs, but it’s still a long slog to a title. Last spring the Lakers needed 23 playoff contests to win it, and they played 23 games in 2009. Other recent title runs: the Celtics’ 26 games in 2008, the Spurs’ 20 in 2007, and the Heat’s 21 in 2006.

Of the eight plausible title contenders, only the Heat lacks a meaningful center. For the other seven teams, most rely on centers who have carry medical concerns.

Let’s start with the Bulls: Joakim Noah, in his fourth season, looked like an All-Star till he went down and missed 30 games for thumb surgery. Last season he sat out 18 games.

Celtics: For the Shamrock’s, Shaq has laced them up for 36 games and missed 25 — and counting — with knee, hip and Achilles woes. This season Shaq’s PR for consecutive games played is 16.

Lakers: Andrew Bynum at 23 is the youngest of this group. He played in all 23 playoff games last spring, though mostly on one leg. He played limited minutes in their 2009 title run, and missed 21 playoff games in 2008.

Magic: Dwight Howard is Superman, missing three games in seven seasons.

Mavericks: Tyson Chandler, 28, has anchored the paint for Dallas and missed but three of their first 57 games. Now, he’s sat out the last two with a sprained right ankle. Chandler knows downtime: missing 31 games for Charlotte last season, and 36 games for New Orleans in 2008-09.

Spurs: Tim Duncan reaches the NBA’s antique threshold when he turns 35 in April. Wise Gregg Popovich has reduced Duncan’s court time to a career-low 29 minutes.

Thunder: Perkins has yet to play for OKC. He missed 43 games for Boston after reconstructive right knee surgery, then played 12 games and averaged 8.1 boards, bruised his left knee two weeks ago and was traded.

My wager is the last team standing in June is the one with a starting center still able to power up and down the court on two healthy legs.

See what you started Mamba24, now Ricky wants to send yiu his package instead of sending it to Pau... ROFLMAO

no body does war like the Serbs.

I cool with the Lakers tanking their next game against Atlanta and come back strong against the Heat. To sorta relieve the pressure of going undefeated since the Allstar break.

OH DEAR LORD!! Thank you!! Thank you!! Ricky you won't be sorry I promise you!! All praises due to Sam Cassell!!!

Anyone who has been questioning Andrew Bynum in this forum should put a self-imposed moratorium on themselves until he plays like crap again. Not for one game though because every player can have a bad night or a slump. Wait until he performs poorly for 3 consecutive games before you post anything again.

Speaking of Sam Cassell, if I were Ainge, I'd be calling Cassell and PJ Brown 'round the clock to get them back on the team. Boston hasn't won a championship since these guys left, and they clearly need players who won't choke in a Game 7.

You sir are brilliant!!! I impose, a self imposed moratorium on myself right now....SHAZAAAM!!!!!!

End game statistics....

Much has been made about Miami's being 1-18 in the final 10 seconds of games trailing by 3pts or less. What I'd like to see is the stats for teams defending a lead of 3 or less in the final 10-24 seconds. Anyone know where this can be found?

O.K. Cyber,

Interesting article on whether or not coach Spoles should’ve mentioned some of the Heat players were crying. It also touches on whether crying is acceptable or not.

I remember Kobe and Fish crying profusely when the Spurs knocked them out in 2003. I didn’t think any less of them for crying. I did question why they couldn’t handle failure like they handled success.

sólo tener un poco de diversión inofensiva con usted, por favor no te enfades

(just having some harmless fun with you, please don't get upset)

Ricky,

You don't have to take the Police or NorCal seriously. They have no idea of what's going on in your side of the world. Reading the blog is like talking to your baby brother, just read/listen for what it says, u don't have to follow what the poster is telling you.

Secondly, you don't have to apologize with your English, this is a blog. As long as you communicate well, that's good enough. It is the problem of the reader to interpret what you're saying or just skip it. However posting in Spanish is NOT COOL because majority would totally at a lost of what ur saying. Let's try to communicate in English please. If the reader has highest standard in English who prefers the correct grammar, punctuations and so forth, then tell him to skip your post. As general rule, they should not expect too much from unpaid bloggers, we don't have editors nor a great writer who has the time to cut and paste. Ricky, you will be judged by the essence of your post.

If I may suggest try to balance your fandom with Pau, they tease u because all they read from you is Pau, Pau, Pau while on another poster Drew, Drew, Drew....somehow we get tired reading the same message. They still need their team isn't it?

To Lewstrs,

¿enfadarme?

Oh you are truly blessed!!!! Non-believer that you are!!

It'll be interesting to see if Phil changes our closing lineup to put Drew on the floor. With most teams playing small ball in crunch time, will Drew be able to defend quicker guys and make the opposing teams pay on the offensive end? With our shoddy passing into the post, I'm not so confident that we'd be able to take advantage of Drew's size in the post, esp when he's being fronted.

I agree. Kobe and Derek was weird. They had just won 3 championships in a row and were acting like guys that had never been there before. To each his own, I guess.

Thanks Edwin.

I have think for many time that in this blog everybody understand spanish a lot, I dont know why......... I can write in 4 languages (obviously spanish, french, german, and english) and english is my worst language for sure. I live in Spain, visit frequenly France an Germany, but never can visit England, Australia, New Zeland or USA, for example(bad luck for me). Last I checked, we're all human beings although we don't all speak the same primary language. You're message of inclusiveness to the team concept and towards bloggers runs against your message of English as primary blog language, does it not? I'm just saying...

I've talked to him before in Spanish, he remembered that. Being that it is the language he is most comfortable with, I'm sure you can cut him some slack given your previous history in defending everyone's voice, or does it only apply if the words they speak are spoken in English?

It would be just plain arrogant and rude.

to mamba24

hahahahahahhahahahahahah. You write really really wellllll.

Bye.

For the record, I had no problem with Kobe and Fish crying in 2003. San Antonio had prematurely ended what should've at least been a four-peat thanks to Shaq's laziness and Mitch's refusal to upgrade the supporting cast. Those kind of opportunities only come around so often, and to have it taken away like that was devastating.

Mamba24,

Isn't it a little early to begin drinking?

Cyber,

Could you please translate my post at 11:03am. I'm just looking for a quick summary of this Mexican center the Lakers are scouting. I'm wondering if it says he's someone they could try to add this year.

Thanks.

Jon K,

That goes to my argument about Mitch not upgrading the supporting cast. I recall that with Shaq being out so much in the regular season that year, Slava became our 2nd best player. That's never a good sign. Lesson from that year? There should be a limit to the "letting the players defend their title" argument.

Well, now we know that the Lakers can get motivated and respond to a challenge. Great job by them yesterday. Now, let's see if they can handle success and continue to play well on the rest of the roadie. One game at a time is the key.

EJK,

"Slava became our 2nd best player."

WHOA!!! WHOA!!! WHOA!!! Hold on, now!

Let's hold back on the crazy talk!

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Jon K, last I checked the Internet doesn't end at the perimeter of the U.S. I also believe English isn't the primary language of all.

My spanish sucks but I don't mind pulling it out to write a post or two to Ricky, who knows I'm from Spanish descent. Now, if this were a regular thing, then yeah I see your point.

Besides, some of what people say here in English is harder to understand than Farsi, anyways.

AS ALWAYS - AND FOREVER - GO LAKERS!!!!!!

LRob, no prob, gimme a bit, may take a while as my spanish is iffy at best.

What was up with JVG and Mark J talking for like most of the 4th Q about the friggin Heat..while the Lakers/Spurs game was going on! PJ subs the 1st team back in with 5 min to go in a blowout and they don't even make a comment? What poor commentary!

Ricky, keep on posting, our mission here is not only Lakers 3 peat but also make u, Ricky comfortable with ur posting in English before June. Promise, we will make that happen.

Cyber, it's good that u could act as an interpreter for Ricky. I'm sure you understand where I coming from on my suggestion to use only one language. Spanish is an international language, similar to French but what a horrendous experience if we all communicate in different international languages in this blog. It would lead to total chaos.

Hey LRob...I would also be curious to see those stats...I got no time right now...but if it's anywhere on the net...this is probably where you would find it...

Lew - Thanks for the link. That’s a great site. I use it a lot…especially for my Kobe career stats tracking and head to head research, but I don’t think they have anything on end game defense stats.

BTW…I think you misread one of my earlier posts. I never said you advocated trading anyone.

@Magia32 – Thanks for the feedback. I forgot about that one. Then hopefully DFish will be shedding tears of joy again this year.

@Jon K – I really don’t have a problem with someone crying in the regular season if it was an isolated incident. But if it’s a reoccurring thing then I would be concerned. What do you think of coach Spoles spilling the beans? Surely that violated the unwritten code of keeping some things in the locker room.

Jon K,

LOL. As crazy it sounds, I think it was true. Outside of Shaq, who was a more reliable scorer than Slava that year? Horry? Fox? Fish?

Lew - sorry to edit your post. But I was NOT a staunch defender of AB. I would definitely put myself in the basher category because of his injuries, VERY slow rehabs and also very skeptical about his lackadaisical attitude toward the team and its needs.

It took him 6 years but apparently the light bulb went off on Friday. Yes AB, your defense is far more important to THIS team.

As for the whole trade AB thing - I was NEVER wanting to trade him at the deadline for Carmelo or anyone else. I was always in the Lakers will "hold pat" because we had Barnes and Theo coming back. And remember Jerry Buss said at his HOF event he felt this was "his best team EVER". So, why would he (or his son) operate any differently?

Lastly, since I was in the basher camp. I had always said that I disagreed with LakerTom. BUT, if there was a time when I felt AB had turned it around, I would gladly acknowledge. And I did that yesterday in the game chat posts.

Now I will just pray for continued good health to AB especially and the rest of the team as well....

Cheers - PLG

Mamba24,

you wrote: Justa where is the rest of the Vodka stash? Don't worry about the percoset's, Hobbit has plenty!!! OH I'M SO HAPPY!!!!!!

my response: Sadly this is not true. I have a piss poor substitute in Vicodin.

hawaiiD - JVG and Mark J did discuss PJ putting the starters back in. Van Gundy said it was no big deal and that the Spurs wouldn't be offended. Mark Jackson disagreed. He said as an opposing player he would be upset and would remember it.

I watched a lot of ESPN since yesterday and, true to form, like rats, the pundits like Skip Brainless and Jon Barry are jumping off the sinking Miami Heat ship in droves.

"The Heat were crying...LeBron and DWade can't get it done in the final seconds....Bosh is no true star...", it goes on and on.

Perhaps at the heart of the matter is that the Heat have hit the toughest part of their schedule and have played some highly motivated teams who are hungry and seeking to solidify their playoff positions.

As much as I dislike the Heat, I hate piling on even more. It's easy to kick someone when they are down. IMO, the Bulls BEAT the Heat yesterday, the Heat did not lose it.

The blog is en fuego today! (That's just a slight poke at you, Jon K. You've had lots to say about "English-only" as of late, and I'm refraining from an off-basketball response.)

That was definitely my favorite game of the season, thus far. I'd rank 'em like this:

1. Spurs
2. Boston
3. OKC

All road wins, and all at important points in the season. Yesterday was JUST what I needed. I watched the 4th quarter with Baby Outlaw, who had just woken from his nap. His comments went like this: "Go Lakers! Ball in the hoop! BAM!" Then he wanted to watch Thomas the Train, which I promptly vetoed.

Go Lake Show!

CyberCosmiX,

"Jon K, last I checked the Internet doesn't end at the perimeter of the U.S. I also believe English isn't the primary language of all."

This is not about the Internet.

It is about THIS PARTICULAR BLOG.

Have you noticed that this is an English language newspaper and that the threads are written in English?

English is the common language OF THIS BLOG. The purpose of a blog is mutual discussion. Thereby, according to the mores of the blog, if you want to be polite by engaging EVERYONE in the discussion--post in English.

If you want to be arrogant and rude, post in another language.

Period.

Like I said, it would be no different than if an English speaker went on a blog written in another language and started posting in English.

It would be just plain rude.

my response: I'm not piling on. I've been kicking them since LeBron
joined.

re: the Heat not losing. I beg to differ. If that had been Kobe & the Lakers
the sports writers would be talking about how Kobe has lost it. When we
lost in 2008, the headlines were that Kobe couldn't get it done.

Oh, no.... D-Wade & especially LBJ lost to the Bulls yesterday. Can
you imagine Kobe having LBJ or D-Wade in 2006? The Lakers would have
won everything that year if Kobe had had help. He was playing that well.

Party Pooper, Party Pooper!!! But as long as you are an Escrima master...You're cool with me my brother!!! LMAO!!!!!!!

@JON K… “If my eight year old kid cried a regular season loss, he'd get a good talking to.”
…..
LOL. I coach my grandson’s 5th grade CYO basketball team and think it’s OK for players to cry after a tough loss, which several of my kids did after losing a double overtime thriller that ended up ruining our perfect regular season record and ending up in a three-way tie for the division title. Of course, we’re talking about 10 year old boys here and no mid- to late 20’s millionaire pro ballers.

Red's little b***ard,

>>>It`s been 9 years since Shaq won the Finals MVP Award.
>>>
>>>June, 2011---Mr. O`Neal is "ready for his close-up"!

Yep. He'll have plenty of time for posing while he's watching the Lakers beat the Bulls in the finals on his big screen TV.

The Outlaw,

I got the poke.

It's a particular pet peeve of when people choose not to communicate in the common language of a discussion.

I had an Armenian business partner once who during meetings would go off on side tangents in Armenian with other people. It's so rude. I'd be thinking, "Everyone here can speak English. That's the one commonality we all have, so why not ONLY engage in English for the purpose of joint discussion?"

It's like something a spoiled girl would do. {"I'm not going to communicate in English!!! SO THERE!!! NA NANA NA NA!"}

So lame... and utterly rude.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

I totally agree with Jon K tho' I won't use rudeness as the reason but more on ease in understanding each other. We are not in United Nations forum where there interpreter for every delegate country. LA Times cannot afford that type of forum. We are in Lakers blog, where there is only one interpreter of passion, that's the role Mamba24.- Best Owner, Best Coach, Best Player, Best Team etc. etc. lmao!

Laker Tom,

You're not doing those kids any service by letting those kids cry after a regular season loss.

Part of winning is learning to keep your emotions in check when the tide's rolling against you.

Crying after a regular season game? I mean, come on. That's ridiculous.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

OH RICKY, YOU'RE SO FINE,
HAVE YOU BEEN HUFFING TURPENTINE,
HEY RICKY (clap clap clap)
HEY RICKY (clap clap clap)

Mamba24,

you wrote: Party Pooper, Party Pooper!!! But as long as you are an Escrima master...You're cool with me my brother!!! LMAO!!!!!!!

my response: Sad to say, you've got this all wrong. I am not an escrima master.
I just like sticks & knives waved in my general direction. Much more invigorating
than coffee. :)

Adrenaline is the most addicting drug of all! Man I miss skydiving!!!

LongTimeLakersFan,

"Yeah, we know. Our country caused them."

Not true. The degree of over-speculation and out-of-control governmental spending was far worse in Europe than in the United States. If you look at how Greece and Ireland handled their affairs, there's no logical way you can blame that level of insane irresponsibility on the United States.

There's no value having a kneejerk quickness to make America the bad guy.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

>>>What was up with JVG and Mark J talking for like most of the 4th Q about
>>>the friggin Heat..while the Lakers/Spurs game was going on!

Uhhh. The Lakers/Spurs game was over midway through the third.

By that point, the coffee spill was a more relevant topic than the Lakers-Spurs game.

Edwin Gueco,

We are saying the same thing. I would just argue that is someone is posting in a language that not everyone is familiar with, then they are blatantly disregarding those people who cannot understand them.

Any kind of blatant disregard for another person is at minimal an act of rudeness.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Jon K - yes!! I absolutely agree with Ron Artest on the All Defensive Team. Maybe we should start that bandwagon rigght now so he gets our early message!!!!

">>>What was up with JVG and Mark J talking for like most of the 4th Q about

Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson are Lakers Haters.

Every Lakers game they serve as commentators for, they talk about ANYTHING but the Lakers game. They talk about where they went to eat. Their golf game. An argument they had with their wife.

ANYTHING BUT THE LAKERS GAME.

It's so annoying.

It sure makes me miss Chick. So much better an experience.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Rick,

We appreciate your insight and take on Pau. We also highly recommend that you continue to communicate in English as you may have noticed that this blog is sourced from LA an English speaking community. For exmaple, few years ago Edwin's written english was marginal but I have noticed that over the past few years he has made tremendous progress and is much better writer. I am sure it helps him in his day to work as well.

Cheers!!

Lakers blow out the Spurs, Bynum turning beastly, Barnes returns, Artest getting his mojo back, Pau hitting 3's, the Heat struggling and crying after another choke job, Dallas finally loses, and the blog is back to talking basketball. This has been the best Lakers weekend of this season by far.

I'd like to second that!

Pau a guard!?!? He is barely capable of hanging onto the ball as a 4! Talk about matador defense as a 1 or 2 or 3 for him! Get real folks - it was just one win in a row, again................

"Interesting article on whether or not coach Spoles should’ve mentioned some of the Heat players were crying. It also touches on whether crying is acceptable or not.

I remember Kobe and Fish crying profusely when the Spurs knocked them out in 2003. I didn’t think any less of them for crying. I did question why they couldn’t handle failure like they handled success.

I agree. Kobe and Derek was weird. They had just won 3 championships in a row and were acting like guys that had never been there before. To each his own, I guess.

Please be reminded that Chick Hearn passed away before the season and they dedicated the season and hopes of a 4th championship in his honor.

Not sure how much that plays into it, but it could.

================
It is an open language blog. Get your bias against latinos under control. The people who think like you are dumbing down Americans with this English only crap. Go to other countries and people speak native and English language making them smarter than the ugly American who only speaks English. So do you want American English or the Queens version?

I think PJ is showing his ignorance again. He sends in his starters back in to send message to bench??? The bench should send message back and say you should have played us more during season so we would be better prepared. I love that Popovitch gives quality time to his rookie Gary Neal and they Spurs have best record in league. If PJ had played our rooks more think how deep and ready we would be.
