Lakers Chat: Lakers vs. Suns

Among the highlights from Phil Jackson's pre-game press conference

On the Sun's makeup with Vince Carter and Marcin Gortat; Jackson calls Carter and Grant Hill the Suns' best post-up players.

On managing Phoenix's pace: "We try not to get caught up in the frenzy of it and try to control it with our offense by making multiple passes."

Jackson simply said "Yes" when asked how much the Lakers' 2010 NBA title influenced his decision to come back. When asked if it would've been easier to walk away losing in the Finals: "Right, I more than likely would've. I think it's pretty obvious winning capped off a great season."

He was then asked if winning a 2011 NBA title would insure Jackson's return: "No. There's no such things as four-peats."

--On Kobe Bryant's left ankle: "His ankle is looking much better and it's coming along, but there is still a process."

--On Matt Barnes since returning with a right knee injury: "He's still tentative out there with the things he's doing. I'm concerned he's feeling a little divorced with what we're doing a little bit. It looks to me sometimes he's not settled in the offense."

No Bynum, No worries!!!

LRob: "Atlanta is the most annoying team in the league for me. They get blown out so many times by other good teams its ridiculous. I turn on the tube to enjoy a competitive game and they're blown out before halftime....sheesh."

LOL me too. I feel bad for Larry Drew who looked liked he was crunching on glass for a while there in the game, but they have too much talent to roll over like they are doing. I guess though, when you decide to pay max-money to Joe Johnson you become the team they have become: perennially good enough to make the playoffs but too bad to make it out of the first round...

AS ALWAYS - AND FOREVER - GO LAKERS!!!!!!

CAN WE AGREE ON THESE POINTS ???
……………………………………………………………
Sometimes we have real substantive differences of opinion but most of the time I find once you get by the passion, emotion, and semantics, you usually just have a difference of degree. Anyway, I thought I might try and draft some statements with which I thought we all could agree to a degree regarding recent controversial topics. LOL. Probably a silly exercise but since I started, here goes:

CAN WE AGREE THAT the regular season is to the playoffs like the first three quarters of the game are to the 4th quarter? Labeling it the practice season isn’t saying the regular season is meaningless just as claiming that you only have to watch the 4th quarter of an NBA game doesn’t mean that the first three quarters don’t matter. But the reality is you can still win a game regardless of how you play in the first three quarters and, provided you make the playoffs, you can still win a championship even if you didn’t play all that well in the regular season. It all just depends on the team and situation.

CAN WE AGREE THAT home court advantage is definitely helpful in winning a championship but not as important as being healthy and ready to play? No one is saying that home court advantage is meaningless. We’re just saying it is not as important as being healthy, nor as critical to have for an experienced team that’s proven it can win big games on the road. It all depends on the team and the situation. We want home court over the East. We don’t necessarily need it to win in the West.

CAN WE AGREE THAT a major factor in how well the Lakers play defense is their efficiency in running their offense? The flip side of the Lakers huge advantage in length is the slowness of their big men, which is why opposing teams usually game plan to run the Lakers to score in transition. The Triangle Offense is designed to encourage good shot attempts and insure players are in right position to play transition defense. Thus, failing to run their offense efficiently plays right into the hands of opposing teams who turn the Lakers turnovers and early-shot long rebounds into fast break points.

Anyway, I thought these were three statements that we all could agree with to a degree. Let me know what you think. I thought it might be nice to find some neutral middle ground before it was too late.

I agree. :)

Once again I gotta miss the 2nd half of a game...bummer. The guys look ok but, they're lacking on the defensive end, so far. Hopefully, they'll amp it up a bit next half.

Let's go Ls...all the way to a 3-peat!!!!!

sorry for the double posts.

sorry for the double posts.

KobeMVP888,

you wanted to know what I wrote. I wrote:

Hello,

There's a poster/blogger by the handle of KobeMVP888.

He consistently starts fights by mis-representing what people say,
Being argumentative, condescending & rude.

to which the victim responded with:

When I read your posts , I see you labeling anyone who doubts the team after a loss as pessimistic and spoiled. You claim the Lakers obviously weren't trying in the game and that they are pacing themselves for the long haul and that other people lack the awareness to see that. You then show statistics to show that previous championship teams have also lost regular season games and experienced hardship along the way.
When the Lakers win, however, you don't downplay the game as a practice season game. You point out the positives in the game and talk about how it shows the Lakers are unstoppable when they actually try to win the game.

If possible I would like y'all to constrain him so that the blog is a more
enjoyable place?

CCX,

you wrote:
Good god hobbit, stop trying to bait me. I'm a big boy and can take it as well as dish it, but it's not going to work. I'm not going there. Besides, I have nothing against you. I have nothing against anyone here for that matter.

You just need to practice what you preach. You can't expect to say you report 888 and follow that up with telling everyone you're not going to stop attacking him. That just doesn't fly...

my response: If you're not going to go there then don't go there.

re: practicing what I preach. this is where those archives show up again.
*I* would like this blog to be a nice place where Laker fans can come and
share their opinion in a respectful fashion. I have no problem with people
having different opinions than I do. I also understand that there's nothing
that I can do about people having different opinions than I do.

When someone tells *me* that I have misunderstood them, I do my best to
try and understand *how* I misunderstood them and to actually fix that.
It's called communication.

The criminal known as KobeMVP888 does not do that. He belittles
everyone who has an opinion different than his. He chooses not to
acknowledge any evidence which does not support his opinion. The
result of his behavior is a lot of ill-will and some very good people no longer
post here because of fights that he's participated in.

Yes, I have also been a part of this. However, I am *trying* to do better.

So, before I get out a stick and beat him w/in an inch of his life [ verbally ]
I am contacting the authorities to find out exactly what is and what is not
allowed. I'm also hoping that they will intervene and ask him to be
more respectful so that *NO* fighting has to take place.

I remember what this blog was like when the K bros. ran it. W/ the exception
of Gunner, KL_Beast & to a lesser degree Mike T, it was a nicer place. I
enjoyed coming here and reading/posting.

I learned things from Mike T & LakerTom back then. FWIW, Mike T would
be big fan of Bynum at the C instead of Gasol.

Now. You can accept that I am *trying* to offer an olive branch to you,
regardless of if it's diseased and weak, or you can ignore/belittle it. The
choice is yours.

Whatever you wrote, it was way too long, so I didn't read it.

You call me a "criminal" and bring my chosen profession up in here repeatedly when I'm in here only as a fan just as you are? And YOU are reporting ME? That's a laugh. I'd love to read the defamatory garble you submitted. I hope you were careful.

Do you need a defense lawyer? Just remember you are innocent until proven guilty. Be aware, Hobbit, PSP and RSP are all excellent prosecuting attorneys. So better to plead guilty and apologize. Otherwise, beatings will continue until the moral improves.

Kobe jacking up crazy shots !!! And Mr. Clutch ( or should I say Mr. Clown Derek Fisher) shooting 2 airballs. And zero baskets tonight. Fisher 36 minutes on court without a basket.

OK, I read it. First of all, you called me a "criminal" which is libel because I have never committed a crime. So that's actionable.

Second, your assertions are false. If anyone is "argumentative, condescending & rude," it is you. IT DEFINES YOUR BLOGGING STYLE. It is ALL you do.

Third, your example sucked. I have never once said that "practice season" means that the regular season means "nothing" yet that is what Bay to LA based his entire premise on, so I corrected him. Then he made a bunch of inaccurate, accusatory comments in response to that. He also flat out lied about what I say after wins and losses. You failed to post my rebuttal to his misrepresentations.

Finally, what you call evidence, I call garbage most of the time. Basketball is a team game that isn't necessarily measured by statistics. It's a team game. Players like Derek Fisher effect games in a positive way without putting up numbers. The evidence that you present is typically statistical and any basketball fan with even an average basketball fan IQ can tell you, for example, that statistics are just a part of the story of the effect that Andrew Bynum has had on the Lakers recent success. His presence in the lane and his altered shots have had an immeasurable effect on the Lakers' defense. And that is just ONE example.

So give it a rest.

Lakers win!

That may have been the most entertaining game of the year. I'd have preferred a 10 point win in regulation, but it's certainly more fun to watch when it's close.

WOO HOOO I just gotta believe the color scheme in heaven is PURPLE N GOLD !!!!!!!!!

Stat of the night.

Steve Nash 19 points 20 assists in 49 minutes.

Derek Fisher o points 2 assists in 46 minutes.

What an entertaining game! S Perkins the PSP knew you would be showing up tonight, haha.

That pass out of the double team by Steven Nash was just sick, dude can ball.

Thanks

I bet the Lakers will be discussing and reviewing Chuck Person's 'run-em'-off-the-3-and-let-them-shoot-midrange-Js' defensive scheme in tomorrow's practice!

Yikes - we had this game several times but let them back in!

My lucky wifey rooter stayed up 3 hours past her bedtime to pull this one out! Thanks sweetheart!

Fun practice game. Lots and lots of practice on our screen-roll defense and lots of practice clawing at the end of quarters. Practice, practice, practice. You know what they say: Practice makes perfect!

So why did you lie that you did not read it? Very strange indeed!

I'm not really a STAT geek.. I'm more of a "bottomline" kinda guy, but I try to remain versatile so heres my venture into the land o StatGeek...

Suns' fifth loss in seven games

Lakers 5th Win in a row, longest current steak in the NBA

2010/2011 NBA Season Lakers 3-1 vs Suns

Me Likey STATS !

I like this stat of the night:

63 minutes played
6 turnovers!

That's pretty amazing.

LO: "It was fun. Perfect time to have a game like that right around tournament time." Unless he was referring to the NCAA tournament, he must have been talking about the playoffs and he's also talking about what the team can get out of a game like this. At least that's what I think he meant.

Me LIKEY those kind of stats, too!

Did I hear TNT commentator Barry make a comment that Kobe was lured into mano-a-mano duel with Grant Hill.

dramatic win but did it have to be this hard??

but did an NBA player tonight really just go through ALL OF REGULATION and 3 OVERTIME periods without a SINGLE FG... YIKES! only in phils world!!!

and frye just had target practice.. how can you let a guy who just came back 14 days from a DISLOCATED SHOULDER burn you so bad?? frye can easily be taken out of the game if you just put a body on him and play physical (see KG)

oh and thank god for vincesanitation or we lose for sure!!

PJ THREE-PEAT WATCH

1992-93 Bulls: 50-21
1997-98 Bulls: 54-17
2001-02 Lakers: 50-21
2010-11 Lakers: 51-20

We're trackin' and the pattern is holding; i.e., his second three-peat team has a better practice season record than his first with both franchises. Stay tuned.

You conveniently left out the first part. Please don't mislead people.

Ok Alex...if we're playing the stat game I'll take steals for $200.

Question - This person had more steals than the entire Suns team. He had four steals and their team had three?

Answer - Who is Derek Fisher.

An amazing game.

I am also amazed that Phoenix is fighting to be in the playoffs. They're too good for that.

I have a lot of thoughts about tonight. I'll share them tomorrow.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Not misleading anyone here but only highlighting all of the passionate venom you spew towards others. That is why I posted the time stamp for others to go back in the archive and see an interesting pattern in the development. It is all part of a R&D!

LoL Now I'm addicted to STATS :) In all fairness and in the interest of full disclosure.. I LOVE DFish !!!!! No matter what...this guy has COME THRU more than I care to count for my team, so despite the belly achers callin for his head between now and Friday... lets take a look at that lil thing most of us refer to as "intangibles" shall we ?

D Fisher - Mins played - 46
F/G's 0-7
3pt Shots - 0-2
F/T 2-2
Off Reb - 1
Def Reb - 2
Assist - 2

Blocks - 1

Fish will be the FIRST to admit his game was lacking offensively.. but he HELPS Us in other ways and after all, isnt that what a Champion does ?

What exactly did I lie about? You say you haven't said the regular season meant nothing but are you denying that you referred to regular season games as meaningless? Meaningless is defined as "having no meaning or significance". Like I said, this debate is too stale to make it longer by arguing about what words mean.

Are you saying I'm lying and that you didn't shrug off losses by saying it was obvious the Lakers weren't trying, simply because you said they weren't and not because of any real evidence to support that claim?

It's laughable that you're calling me accusatory when you're acting this way.

Good and fun game to watch, but it didn't have to come down to 3 OT's.

He is a buffoon who should be retired. Zero reason to have him on the floor. Blake came in and did a nice job. Phil should of played him more minutes. It is a slap in the face for Blake to have to sit and watch Fisher flounder on the court.

In a made up word, that was one "fugly" game. I fail to see the "fun" in giving up a 20+ point lead in a matter of minutes. Thank goodness they eked out a win because in the end, that's all that really matters and they need every win they can get, "fugly" or not because they want HCA in The Finals.

Next up: The Clippers with real threats against weak defenses. Gordon, Kaman, Griffin, Jordan, Williams & Aminu. Lakers win another one in regulation. Bynum has quickly become "The Equalizer!" Stay healthy and avoid awkward situations that can cause an injury.

"Even when we didn’t make the playoffs, I thought we'd win the championship." Dr. Buss

Go Lakers & In Buss We Trust!!

Let's all grow up and not argue :)

Whoever was complaining about low scoring games the other day you sure got your wish!! *lol*

@complex brotha - yes, that is what a champion does.

@hobbit - I think you meant Kobe needs a 1,029 to pass Shaq.

K. Bryant 15-31 42 points 12 rebounds, 9 assists

Will this guy ever shoot 50%?

and what about those 3 turnovers he had?
And only 1 steal?

This guy is just deteriorating before our eyes

i never thought the Lakers would lose. the Lakers kept trying to convince me otherwise. it was a fun game, if a bit too long. i thought that this was the first game that i really started to see that playoff energy and focus, the kind that says "even if you play your best game you can't keep it up. i'm winning in the end".

i've noticed that there are people, some of which i'm glad are posting here(fwiw), who are confused into thinking that anyone really cares what they think, say, or are about, when we all know that this blog was created for Laker fandom. being a fan of one's pride, intelligence, power, charisma, writing skills, or anything else over Laker fandom reduces the poser to the level of pests and trolls(no matter who's in the right).

we've all trolled others on the internet from time to time, but it's always kinda lame, unless you're in that kind of forum. this is the Lakers Blog. we love Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant. when Shannon does some thing dopey, or Lamar fouls a 3 pt shooter at the end of regulation, or Luke comes in and shoots like a spectator i STILL love and root for them, even while cursing, because i'm a fan of the team and i want them to do well. plus, i get to see a win one way or the other more often than not, so i have reason to be forgiving and patient. losers don't have that option.

sock puppets are lame, but so is picking fights even if you know who your enemy is. if you're going to have a war, it better be over something more valuable than who can destroy the other's peace of mind the most. that is not Lakers fanning or even trolling Lakers fans. it's just selfishness. this is not the LA Time selfishness blog regardless of what some think of Kobe.

Kobe's career points: 27,561

Shaq: 28,590. Looks like we're only looking at the 100's and not the 1000s. Kobe needs another 1000+

Assuming he scores at the rate of 24ppg, and Shaq scores at his ppg this year - around 9+ ppg. This means Kobe is gaining on Shaq at the rate of ~14 pts per game. So, to cross those 1029 points, he'll need 72 games. Another 11 games in regular season, and if we go all the way playing Game-7s until the Finals, that adds another 28., which accounts for 39 max games this season. He still needs 33 games next season to catch up (unless Shaq retires). If Shaq retires after this season, Kobe can catch up in 20 games.

So, for Kobe to catch with Shaq, looks like it might happen mostly around mid-season in the next season!!

However, after #5, the difference between #4 (Wilt) and #5 is almost 3,000 pts!! Assuming Kobe slows down to say 20 ppg, then he would need 150 games to reach that 3000 - which means he MIGHT cross Wilt in the 2013-2014 season. That again, might probably his last season. Or he might push hard for one more season and score the next thousand needed to cross Jordan and then hang his boots.

All said and done, I dont think Kobe is going to catch up with either the Mailman (Karl Malone) or Kareem. The highest he can go is catch up Jordan, or until Wilt for $4.

Another concern in this game, which was due to insipid play.

24-sec shot clock violation. I think we did this 3-4 times today!!
