Lakers Roundtable: The Times' Mark Medina and The Columbian's Matt Calkins preview Lakers-Blazers game

Among the highlights of my conversation with The Columbian's Matt Calkins about the Lakers-Blazers game:

--Why Portland (32-24) has won six consecutive games and why Calkins has given the Blazers an A on his recent report card.

--Whether LaMarcus Aldridge was snubbed from the NBA All-Star game.

--Medical updates on Brandon Roy and Marcus Camby.

--Whether Portland plans to make any trades before Thursday's deadline.

--Why Calkins believes Portland will lose to the Lakers at the Rose Garden.

--How Portland will finish in the Western Conference standings.

--You can follow Calkins work at The Columbian's website and on Twitter.

I wish Phil would have given the rooks some more tick this season. He just doesn't understand grooming young players. Look at whay Pop has done in San Antonio. He gave Blair, Neal and George Hill minutes which allowed them to blossom into dependable players for the Spurs. Since then, the Spurs have put together one of the best regular seasons in decades.

Posted by: mclyne | February 23, 2011 at 11:59 AM

agreed.. i also pointed that out in the chat last night... plain n simple phil is renowned for shattering the young and fragile psyches of young nba rookies... unfortunately our LORD OF THE RINGS is also our LORD OF BROKEN YOUNG DREAMS... and that is his philosophy.. he hates rookies and always has.. he once even compared them to being as useless as "plankton"... this year early in the year phil even ripped on caracter to the press calling him "horrible" or something to that effect.... young and tender egos need nurturing but phil continues to play his silly mind games with them.

caracter and ebanks are no ordinary laker rookies and kupchak draft picks of the past like pathetic stiffs like sasha cook luke and farmar etc.... these guys actually have talent and what were once promising young and promising rookies brimming with confidence in preseason have now been reduced to useless and hopeless spare parts rotting at the end of the bench.. i find phils decision this year to continuosly give luke the puke minutes over ebanks completely repulsive and reprehensible and why that man is stubborn as a MULE!! its not like lakers are going for the 70 wins here and in hindsight lakers would not have much to lose by giving his rookies some playing time to develop.

I would really like to see Shannon get 35 minutes a game for a few games. Let's see how much and how good he is and/or can be. He gives good effort, speed, and quickness. We may have an answer right here on the team. I don't know, how does anyone know until they have a consistent chance?

Ok, 888 is back in da house! NICE!!!!

And yellofever and Laker Truth are flat RIGHT!!!

Luke over Ebanks is ridiculous. The kid is ready to play, just need minutes.

Oh, well.

I SAID IT ONCE AND I'LL SAY IT AGAIN. WHEN THE LAKERS BRING THEIR A GAME, THEY CAN BEAT ANY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. THEIR PROBLEM IS MAINTAINING THEIR CONSISTENCY, BY STAYING FOCUSED. UNFORTUNATELY PORTLAND HAS BEEN ONE OF THEIR CHIEF NEMESIS, BUT IF THEY STAY AND PLAY FOCUSED BALL. WE SHOULD WIN HANDILY. PSALMS 44

LAKER TRUTH - One thing you forgot about Phil: his complete and total devotion to his Triangle. He would rather see his beloved Triangle being ran "correctly" than anything else - even if that means having to use crummy player such as Luke. Even if that means the team performing less than the best it could have...

That was why Jordan and Sasha got shipped out. Doesn't matter how good they are (for the bench) they just freestyle too much and are not obedient enough for the Triangle's slowpoke pace.

Latest blockbuster trade: Deron Williams to New Jersey.

Which makes me mighty depressed to look at my Lakers with truly CRUMMY PG.

Sad to think a team with championship aspiration having to depend on one of the WORST PG in the league.

Supposedly Chris Paul will be a FA next summer. Let see if the FO can pull off something to address this very sore point.

Hello

Police here; Does this mean that people are not reading the supposed post from KobeMVP888? Because If you even bothered to read the first line it would be immediately apparent that its not him.

The PSP have given up on Phil; not a fan of him or his method(s), but the problem with trying to argue against Phil is that the Phil Lovers have the 'rings' to destroy almost any argument you bring up against Philip. Oh well.

Thanks
PSP Officer

Here are some options of players after next season (of course could pull an Anthony and go basically where you want to go, especially before trade deadline a year from now):

Andrew Bynum-Lakers have the Team Option of re-signing or trading. $16M

Dwight Howard-He has the Player Option just like Melo had now. $19M

Deron Williams-He has the Player Option just like Melo had now. $18M

Chris Paul-He has the Player Option just like Melo has now. &18M

Ron Artest-He has the Player Option like Melo has now. $7M

Lamar Odom-Lakers have the Team Option of re-signing or trading. $8M

So, let's have at it!

We are not going back to moderated again. I know some posters don't like this and I apologize for the delay in postings, but order must be restored. First item of business is that Blog Police is banned. The intentions were clear that handle just wanted to agitate other readers.

Well, my fellow Lakeraholics, I have some challenging news...

My boss has shut down my department at work and I will soon be unemployed.

Since I was paid for on a 1099, I will not have unemployment insurance.

This means times are desperate and unless I find some other means of generating income, I'm going to have to leave for Ohio or be homeless.

So, the good news is that if I am exiled from California, I'll at least be able to activate the magical powers of the Lucky Barstool to propel the Lakers to Greatness during the end of the season.

The bad news is that I'd have to leave my homeland against my will and be able to watch the Lakers with far less frequency... which would be somewhat heartbreaking.

Anyhow, if anyone knows of any employment opportunities, if you wouldn't mind contacting me via Mark Medina, I'd truly appreciate it.

Hopefully we'll get a win tonight, like we did with Atlanta, and lift my spirits a bit.

It's interesting. A homeless person asked me for money last night, and as was giving him some money, he asked, "Do you what period it is in the Lakers game?"

"It's halftime," I responded.

"Are we winning?"

"Yeah, we're up by 21."

"Good. Good. Okay, thanks, brother."

As he walked off and I got into my car, I realized how many people connect with the Lakers lean on their success to get them through the challenges each day holds.

It's kind of a big deal and it's what makes the Lakers so special.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

sorry... not moile... mohel.

Jon K,
Sorry to hear about your job situation. Wht part of Ohio are you moving to? I'm in Hilliard, a burb of Columbus, you're more than welcome to watch some games at my place bra. I've got the NBA League Pass and get every Laker game, and I don't miss a single possession.
Chris

@MM - good roundtable with Matt Calkins. Of course, its always interesting to hear out of town reporters wander why some in Lakerland make such a fuss over the teams' struggles thus far. They all assume the Lakers will still come out of the west.

Also, he provided good insight to the Camby situation saying the team wooed his wife and now they're thinking of trading him.

@Mamba - Fame - nice choose....of course we'll remember the name! Also, of course I'm down with Lew!

Jon K,

Good luck on your job hunt my friend!

Jon K - Sorry to hear about your department at work being shut down. I hope an opportunity opens up for you in Cali. Keep the faith! Thanks for sharing the story about the homeless Laker fan.

>>>sorry... not moile... mohel.

>>>With all do respect Mr. MM I find this Racial Slur over the top

Okay, maybe I missed something here. What was offensive about my correcting my spelling of the word mohel?

Hey Jon K, this is your opportunity of stop quitting getting employed and get into business. Be an entrepreneur by using your talents and contacts sell whatever service or goods you can obtain from contacts on a retail basis. You ask how? Well, if you dip yourself into it longer enough, you will find the answer. Most important is getting exposed, having a plan and repetition of what you are doing until perfect. Once your iron becomes shot, it is easy to strike w/ hammer to go w/ the style or form u prefer. All big business start with small ideas that failed several times but it took perseverance and patience to make it work.

Here is a question I like to ask from little GM's here, supposing Mitch wanted D'Will, who do you think Utah would take in the trade except Kobe?

What, we have moderation and we are still getting comments from G Money and Mr Laker? I would hate the see the comments that didn't get approved. Posted by: phred | February 23, 2011 at 5:09 PM

I don't know why Phred would want to pick on me. I bleed Purple and Gold and a d@rn good poster who makes real if not sometimes irreverent comments. No harm no foul!

No more moderating,

Thanks MM!!!

The Black Mamba,
Once Again Rises!!!!!!!

Do you know what a mohel is and did you get the context of where I used the statement. Someone stated to always measure twice and cut once... and I added "especially if you're a mohel".

It may perhaps be an inside joke that only Jews or people who are familiar with Jewish culture would get, but it is certainly not a slur to Jews in any way.

Let me ask this... are their any Jewish readers of the blog? Did you find my bad joke to be a slur somehow against Judaism?

Just because I use a word from a particular religion or nationality does not make it a slur. If I called someone a schlemiel, maybe you could call that a slur.

And as for the "I'm not Jewish" comment...

I originally misspelled the word as moile. A Jew would know the correct spelling of mohel. If we were able to edit posts, I would have just corrected the spelling. Since we aren't, I posted a followup.

I'm still not sure I see a slur there, but if it's a slur to imply that if you're Jewish, you know how to spell mohel, then I apologize for my insensitivity.

Are we moderated or not moderated?
MM said we are not, then the bottom box said that comments are moderated!

What is the answer??

Moderated
or
not moderated?

>>>sorry... not moile... mohel.

srafrank,

Perhaps you misinterpret something here.

Do you know what a mohel actually is? A mohel is a man who performs a briss. Or in English, a circumcision.

Thus the tie-in to the statement about measure twice and cut once.

There is nothing insulting about calling someone a mohel, as far as I know. It's an honorable Jewish profession.

I initially misspelled it as "moile" and corrected myself. Does moile mean something in some language I'm not aware of? If so, mea culpa. If not, I think you're barking up the wrong tree regarding a racial slur.

The Heat are reportedly shopping Mike Miller, but not fielding any decent offers. It's funny how things change so fast. Just 7 months ago Miller was a hot FA target.

mamba24,

>>>@SRAFRANK, I stand with you my brother 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, so I haven't heard back from srafrank, so maybe you can explain it to me mamba... what about the mohel comment was a "racial slur"?

Oh, drat....Jon K. I hope you get something really soon. Ask MM for my email and send me your resume, or whatever you have. I don't have many contacts, but I got some...

Edwin Gueco,

I am starting my own business and have been working on it for months now. We're at the funding stage. We need about $2 million to start and funding isn't flowing as freely as I'd like it to in this economy.

What do we play for? RINGS!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Come on mark this moderation is bogus man. I don't see anything out of hand that has happened over the last couple days. People just have to respect different opinions. Some people think that Kobe can do no wrong. While others see some flaws and are willing to point them out if it negatively effect the lakers play. I say no to censorship. If persons engage in personal and racial attacks then ban that person. Why should everyone suffer for the actions of a few?

"There was a time where I didn't believe in love.I really thought it never existed, but this is the time that makes me want to thank you. Thank you everything, because it is you that taught me love, and how to love. Before, I feared love. But now, I know I can't go on without love. Not any love, but your love, my love, my only, my one. I know you might fear my love. Here I am telling you to not fear it, but have it. Out of all the things money can buy and life can give, my love to you can not and will never match. Because it is you who I live for and will die for. It is you who has my heart, body, and soul. My eyes open to see you and close to picture you. You run wild in my mind, You stay still in my heart. My soul you share and my body you hold. Forgive me if I stop writing, but I must, for I fear words written on a paper can not describe what I honestly feel for the obsession of my love, for you my love...Hugs and Kisses"

I believe a moile is something you walk in Australia for a camel...

Do you reckon the old boys can get it up two nights in a row,
or even three, before they drop a few games?

That's a real problem...and the games really count now.

Go Kings!

im jewish n that joke didnt offend me

I'm sorry, I'll stand with the blog when it gets down and ugly and people need help, but I'm just having the reaction right now that most of the comments on the last few threads aren't good or bad, they are just stupid. It just seems like nobody is really paying attention when they read or write.

FCM- I'm sorry, but you are completely lying down on the job here- a somewhat offensive comment by somebody pretending to be MVP888 still exists without getting deleted on at least two threads, but you banned Practice Season Police? Perhaps i missed some offensive comments by him, but I have talked to him numerous times and I think he at least made a credible explanation for his choice of name.

But....I'm glad the blog is here for Jon K- He is a stand up guy who shares his life with us and if anybody can help him out it would be a great gesture.

JohnnyV: "Unfortunately Anonymous posting brings out the worst in people. I wish it were different and at some point the LAT will attract what they deserve which is to lose out to a better forum that can implement better tools and some cohesiveness."
-
Too bad there aren't more reasonable people like yourself here on the blog. I'm right there with you.

- - -

Jon K: Hang in there bud. Hope you get back settled and on your feet. Whatever you do, hope everything works out for the best.

- - -

That MVP888 imposter should be writing Hallmark Cards. Great stuff, he's wasting his talents here.

AS ALWAYS - AND FOREVER - GO LAKERS!!!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWv53OJ-ydI

This blog has been degraded by trolls and posters that refuse to accept someones opinion for what it is.

MM, im with you on moderating all the comments, some people just can't see a good thing even when its right in front of their face.

LRob: What do you think, we need a shooter and Miller could fit the bill. Odds of the Heat making that trade might be somewhere around zero percent though...

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=6ka82bb

AS ALWAYS - AND FOREVER - GO LAKERS!!!!!!

It would be better off if Nobody has name or ID, and just express their opinions rather than react to each other. That way, there is Nobody to react to or respond to, just purely opinions are to be expressed. It can also eliminate the negative emotions resulting from his or her thoughts or opinions. By nature, opinions and beliefs are limited perspective. They can never be the absolute Truth. So it's no use trying to prove that my point of view is more right than other's point of view. The subject is simply viewed from different perspectives. That's all. Thus, instead of resisting other points of views, if one can integrate (accept) all different perspectives, one can get closER to the Truth. Also, in the end, all of vicious and baseless comments will lose their powers because (only) Nobody will react to Nobody's comments. It's a paradox.

Jon K, $ 2 million is a huge gamble for me who is just a small fry. I would not recommend that in a recessionary condition w/ an unstable world because of the turn around in Middle East. 2M investment is for Bill Gates, so I would say save for the extended drought and gas inflation days while proceeding aggressively on "sweat or saliva" investment. Through contacts, you let parties transact business while you act as the middleman. Let the insurance assume the risk while you just pay the premiums. To avoid being homeless, don't include your food, shelter and clothing in your business, because if you fail you will be left wearing only underwear. Go w/ investment with less financial exposure, low profitability but high in activity, once the economic picture becomes clear then that is the time to go for the big bucks gamble.

The same with Lakers who have the mental attitude that they lose in Portland, if they implant that attitude in their minds, then their body language will also follow suit. Gut it out and fight back, there is no such thing as superstition, it's all in the mind. Mind over matter. Don't be satisfied with performance last night, double the efforts and start pounding early.

>>>im jewish n that joke didnt offend me

Okay, just wanted to make sure there wasn't any secondary meaning that I was unaware of.

Dwight Howard a Lakers... Sounds good to me... Get rid of that scrub Bynum and Fish while we're at it...

phred, etc. - I'll admit. I have dropped the ball just not today but previously with trying to put control to the trolls. It's not out of negligence or indifference. It's just that things like practices, meetings and games leaves me with a lot of comments to sort through. Unfortunately, plenty of time the damage is already done. I'm having it on moderated when I'm here so I have more control

Edwin Gueco

So true about our lakers they need to keep their minds, and focus get after them early by getting the ball inside to the bigs and take advantage of our size.I think this would be a good mental huddle considering our record up their the pass few yr.Looking at 2 in a row.

Go Lakers!

LongTimeLakerFan, we thought someone was jacking your handle and supposedly moehil is a jewish slur. If I was wrong I apologize my brother. But as I say in either event it was not meant to be aimed at you if you read the comment he said he was a faker. I thikk maybe Mamba24 should read more thoroughly before posting. So again my brother...MAMBA24 WAS WRONG AND APOLOGIZES TO LONGTIMELAKERFAN!!!!

@Jon K, sorry to hear about your job situation. As a fellow mid-wester (in MI) Lakers fan, you are always welcome to catch the game at my pad. I got slingbox to stream games from my family home in LA =).
