Laker girl profile: Veronica sees benefits in not stressing the little things

Laker Girl Veronica

Laker Girl name: Veronica

Hometown: Covina, CA

Area of Residence: Covina, CA

High School: Temple City High School, CA

College: Graduate of California State University, Fullerton. Majored in Public Relations with a minor in Human Communications.

What prompted you to want to become a Laker Girl? In my opinion, the Laker Girls are an elite, prestigious and most recognizable dance team. Since I've been dancing from age 5, it has always been a goal of mine to be part of this dance team. In addition to dance, I started playing basketball at a young age. I love playing and watching the sport! It is fair to say I grew up being a "girly-girl and tomboy."

What do you think stood out to the judging panel, about you, regarding your audition? I hope that it was my showmanship and passion for performing. In addition, I hope the enthusiasm I possess for this position stood out to the judging panel.

What do you think makes a good Laker Girl? Aside from being a good dancer, I think being professional, dedicated, responsible, having charisma, being able to time manage and being a Lakers fan are all good qualities to have as a Laker Girl. Also, the drive to volunteer your time to give back to the community and meet the fans. Not only do we dance, but we are are ambassadors of the Lakers organization and it is extremely important to represent a positive image for this organization.

What is your dance experience? As I’ve mentioned before I have been dancing since I was 5 years old. I started with ballet, tap and jazz training at a performing arts studio. I quickly added hip-hop classes. . . and more recently contemporary, jazz funk styles of dance.

Favorite dance routine, while being a Laker Girl? My favorite routine as a Laker Girl is "Show Me How You Burlesque" by Christina Aguilera, because we had the opportunity to choreograph the dance as a team. It is a fusion of musical theater, jazz and jazz funk dance moves.

Favorite uniform? My favorite uniform is the Purple "Ruffle" uniform, because it is a cute, sparkely two-piece skirt outfit.

Favorite Lakers Player? Current: Pau Gasol Legend: Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

Favorite Laker Girl memory so far? I am so fortunate! I have a three-way tie between being in the 2010 Back-to-Back Championship Parade, traveling to London & Barcelona for preseason and participating in the 2011 L.A. All-Star Game/Festivities!

What do you like most about being involved, as a Laker Girl, at local charity/community events? To be given the chance to be involved in charity and community events is such a rewarding experience. I have so much fun meeting fellow die-hard Lakers fans and thanking them for their support.

What would you say is your beauty secret? Make sure to get a good night rest, moisturize, apply sunscreen, use carmex for your lips, wash your face every night and take daily vitamins. Most importantly, don't sweat/stress the small stuff!

What diet/workout tips do you have? Do not deprive yourself from eating all day and then eat one big meal to compensate. Eat regular meals and healthy snacks (fruits, veggies, peanuts, almonds, granola bars). Stay hydrated, work out and stretch regularly.

What are your hobbies? Spending time with my family and friends, any activities you can do at the beach, hiking, watching movies, arts/crafts and photography.

Career aspirations? Prior to graduating college I had my heart set solely on working in the event planning field but that has changed a bit. At the moment, I also have an interest in entertainment broadcasting and working with children.

@THE OUTLAW… LOL. I always have my Bynum glasses on. Seriously, though, I think Drew’s and Pau’s +/- scores pretty much tell the story about their play with Drew +16 and Pau -13. While I often am critical of the relevancy of +/- scores, this time the +/- really told the story. When Drew was in the game, every shot in the paint was challenged. When Pau was in the game, easy layups and dunks.

I do agree with your comments that Drew should dunk the ball more often to prevent shots from getting blocked but the guy to whom your comments should be directed is Pau Gasol, who with a couple of exceptions played very soft in this game. I could have predicted his last few jumpers would be short armed. .I could see Kobe getting pissed at Pau for not finishing hard, which finally motivated him to toughen up. Don’t get me wrong, I love Pau when he is aggressive and helps on defense but when he throws up weenie shots and appears afraid of going into the paint or trying to block a shot, I tend to go all “ouchhhhhhhh” on Pau. At any rate, that was a critical charge that he drew.
………………………………………………………………….
@DKWSFO… Good stuff as usual. I think the issue with Drew’s hops is really just the normal aftermath of the surgery although there were several plays this game where Drew really elevated to grab a board and jumped very quickly to block a shot. I expect we will see him start to play more consistently and see his hops and athleticism improve as we progress through the playoffs.

In the case of Kobe not getting the normal super star calls, it’s almost reached the point where the refs are not calling fouls in order to get Kobe pissed so that they can give him a technical foul. You would hope the Lakers front office would send some video to the league offices about that play. Seriously, bump Dwayne Wade or LeBron James and you automatically get whistled. Mug Kobe and the refs will just step aside and “let them play.” Only in the NBA.

NBA Refs, worst in Pro Sports!

Veronica, thanks for your profile. I also thank you for representing our beloved Lakers.

Keep on the good work.

They used to be the best in pro sports, during the 80's...

What happened?

Nice profile Veronica. Thanks for representing Laker Nation.

Reports just came out that Troy Murphy's buyout is official. I would scoop him up just to keep him from Boston and Miami.

@LRob- I think that Troy is headed to BOS, along with Leon Powe. The two players I would like to see the Lakers look at that may be bought out; Samuel Dalembert, and Jason Kapono. Both those players represent needs right now.

We're not on his scope. He seems to want to play for the East...Miami or Boston.

I don't see how he can be a diferencial. He can go wherever he wants.

And that's for you, LRob:

Mark Medina,

I like the Laker girls bios. They're lighthearted and fun.

I think a lot of us have come to care for the organization nearly as much as the team--due to the stewartship of Dr. Jerry Buss.

It would be nice to see brief interviews with Lakers executives, scouts, people we don't know about who contribute to Lakers Greatness in ways we're not aware of.

Just a suggestion.

All that said, I enjoyed meeting Veronica and I look forward to meeting more Lakers girls. They, like all of us, are in our own little way part of the team.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

@TNT – I’m with you on Dalembert. He’s my first choice.

@Magic Phil – Thanks for the Chaka...exquisite.

@Jon K – I agree 100%. I think you were part of the reason MM posted the features on the asst coaches

I enjoyed watching Miami go down today. (Hmmm... haven't seen G. Money around much lately). But it was hard listening to Hubie Brown call the game. He was waving the Knick pom poms pretty hard.

LakerTom: Thanks for the comments. As you know, I'm a champion of young Bynum's potential. Trade him for 'Melo? No thanks. But the guy HAS to get more aggressive.

All in all, it was a great win.

Go Lake Show!

LRob,

Everyone is part of the team.

One of my favorite Lakers is Jeannie Buss--and I don't agree with a lot of the things she does--but she BLEEDS purple and gold.

The Lakers are so special. It's not just the players (though it's mainly the players). It's the fans, the owners, the Laker girls, the coachES, the scouts, the executives... even the people who work at Staples Center.

We are all Laker Nation.

It's a business... but it's not just a business. It's something more than that.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

@LRob- Does that surprise you about Hubie? At least Doris Burke wasn't calling the game...

LRob,

I do not get the nostalgic enthusiasm for the Knicks.

I hate the Knicks.

I put every single meaningful organization above the knicks: Us, San Antonio, Boston, the 76ers, even Detroit above the Knicks.

It's pure New York hubris.

@TNT - not a big surprise, but I thought Hubie would camouflage it better.

@Jon K - I don't really dislike the Knicks. I save that for the Bos, SA, Miami, Dal, etc. But you're right, as an organization they've been putrid the last decade despite the media hype trying to keep them relevant.

the Laker girls are all so clean and sporty...

Andy Kamenetzky had a piece on Elvin Hayes over at the ESPN blog. it linked to an old SI article:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1093719/2/index.htm
a quote caught my eye:
'And Hayes said, "Our guards get criticized for not playing defense, our forwards for not scoring, but I never hear a word about our center. Mitch Kupchak can shoot. He ought to play more."

:^)

mud,

Mitch Kupchak would have been in the discussion of the Great Lakers players if he hadn't gotten hurt.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

true, Jon.

Jon K - Thanks for the feedback. I plan on doing what you propose at some point. A lot of it has just been scheduling but look for some of those more in depth Q&A's soon

There are loves that kill and the one that it has LakerTom by Gasol is extremely suspicious. Lately it has it always in the front sight and Bynum in the altar of the Gods. I am satisfied to watching the Gasol statistics of the season and his regularity, to compare to Gasol with Bynum is a mortal sin. LakerTom says that it loves Gasol but is not truth, wants it to denigrate to harness to Bynum.

Lakers are a winner team from Gasol arrival. ¿ok?

Bynum is a good project... from many years ago but only a project.

Perdón por la repetición involuntaria del último mensaje.

"In the case of Kobe not getting the normal super star calls, it’s almost reached the point where the refs are not calling fouls in order to get Kobe pissed so that they can give him a technical foul."

Agreed Laker Tom. It's become almost laughable.

You guys didn't take me seriously when I said that Carmelo was like the anti-LeBron. I can't explain it, but throughout their careers (going back to pre-nba) Carmelo has OWNED him.

Anyhow, loving this win streak right now. I'm feeling confident we've come off rock bottom (hard to go lower than closing out a losing streak with a loss against the worst team)

Nice win Lakeshow!

Now, Four and O!

LAKERS ALL DAY!!!

"DUDE.......my team got busted AGAIN!!! Lost to the BULLS last week, and now, to CARMELOW! We can't seem to BEAT the ELITE....but WAIT, we beat you right?yeah!my CHEAT beat you! whohow! butt now, my team S@CKED! I think I'm gonna have to stay here for GOOD. I now bleed Purple & GOOOLD. Just sayin......"

LRob,

Murphy will be a great addition, if ever. But my first choice would be to get Kapono, if possible.

PJ utilizes these gunslingers very well because of the Triangle. I would love to see Kapono on our team. Swing.. swing.. swing.. BOOM! 3 point basket!!!

LAKERS ALL DAY!!!

Just for fun...

Just wanna share with you guys. I loved this...especially at the 1:00-1:02 mark. LOL! priceless!

LAKERS ALL DAY!!!

I'm usually complaining about Drew and his weak play but I gotta give props to him after his latest performance. Nice activity! I stil would like to see more aggressiveness around the basket though. Again we saw a couple of blown and-1s. A dude of his size should just murder people under the basket. Tear the rim down Drew!!!

a few things...

the starting roleplayers' activity is good (bynum, artest primarily). wish the bench would follow suit. drew needs to dunk more... how much longer til he gets his explosiveness back? i was counting on blake/bryant/brown alley oops to bynum this season...

sefolosha is a beast

an offensive set needs to be run at that last stretch of a game. the iso's weren't working too well and gives people heart attacks.

and hi, veronica.

also, did anyone catch sports center after the blazers hawks game? seems like BSPN had a 10 min segment on melo to nyc and the game against the heat earlier that day. next on the ticker was okc v lal and i'd say it was a moderate minute and a half with nothing but thunder footage... so sad =/

"According to ESPN Stats & Information, Bynum had a touch on just 18 of the Lakers' 98 possessions. When Bynum did get a touch, the Lakers averaged 1.5 points per play compared to just 0.79 points per play when he didn't. "
Can someone send this stat to Kobe? Does he need to force so many shots up?

I thought Bynum was the best player on the floor yesterday period. I prefer Odom and Gasol to close out games normally, but not always. I don't understand why Jackson takes Bynum out when he is clearly dominating the game on both ends of the floor and the other two were not giving us much?

Ron Artest was solid on both ends yesterday! If he continues to play like that and we get Barnes playing with energy off the bench then we are set.

@NBA4EVER... Thanks for the ESPN stats. I agree with you that Drew was the best player on the floor for the Lakers yesterday and that Phil should give him a chance to finish games when he is playing that well. I was actually a little worried about our interior defense when he took Drew out.
............................................
TOM

I think Drew should be finishing more games in general. He's not exactly a liability out there so I'm not too sure what gives

Any ignorant conspiracy theorists thinking the Lakers are mandated to win by the league office should be forced to watch this game, eyelids forced open Clockwork Orange-like.

Laker J, I looked up 'ego' in the dictionary, it was spelled J-A-V-I-E.

While I was at it I looked up 'overrated' in the dictionary and saw lebrons picture, I can confirm it's the same one they used for 'chokejob'...

Having seen Perk in Thunder-blue yet, but starting to think the Chowd/OKC trade might end up as one of those that hurt both teams.

- - -

Not sure what MM will choose for today's Justa-award, but this comment by bronxlakerfan gets my vote:

"It is only fitting that Ron Artest is a Laker. Just like the Lakers, every time you think Ron is finished, he rises up and plays one hell of a game. Great defense from Ron today. Kobe also played well defensively, particularly in the second half. That is what champions do....they find a way to contribute and win even when their offensive games aren't clicking."

- - -

Walked away from the end of the Knicks/meat game last night, just didn't care to watch a meat win. I'm kicking myself for not staying. Nothing better than watching princess jimmy end of game situations, it's like watching a train-wreck you know that's coming in slow-mo.

AS ALWAYS - AND FOREVER - GO LAKERS!!!!!!

Under the weather so off I go to sip some vodka laced with tea.

LAKERS' ANDREW BYNUM INCREASES ACTIVITY LEVEL AGAINST OKLAHOMA CITY
By Broderick Turner for the LA Times
http://tinyurl.com/4o6vjma
............................................
Excellent article about Drew’s performance against the Thunder. Here is an excerpt:
............................................
Reporting from Oklahoma City — It was the ultimate compliment paid by his coach.
...
"Andrew [Bynum] was very good," Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said about his young center.
...
Indeed, Bynum was a force for the Lakers during their 90-87 victory over the Thunder on Sunday.
...
It was more than his five blocked shots, which was telling. It was more than his 7-foot frame, which was a deterrent.
...
It was how active Bynum was.
...
He had 16 points, missing just two of his seven shots.
...
He had 10 rebounds, three offensive. He also had two assists, one steal and one foul in 31 minutes, 39 seconds.
...
"Today, mentally more than anything, I was in the right spots," Bynum said. "That's just what enabled me to have the kind of game that I did. Defensively, it's timing."
...
Late in the game, Jackson said he "reluctantly" replaced Bynum with Pau Gasol because he's more mobile.
...
"But Andrew was blocking and changing shots," Jackson said.
...
Bynum had right knee surgery over the summer and is still trying to get back to 100%, and he missed one game with a bone bruise in his left knee.
...
"His activity obviously is an issue," Jackson said. "A lot of it's due to how he feels physically. He's going to have knee issues as he goes along and he just has to monitor that. I think when he feels well, you see his activity level increase."
............................................
TOM

ugh, should have said 'Haven't' above rather than 'having'

Now, where's that vodka bottle at again?

nknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknknk

haahahhahahahaha oh wow. I can't believe I thought I'd see the day where I would see Lakers fans talking bad about the refs. The Lakers owe at least 3 of their championships to the referees, including the 2010 finals (the most blatantly fixed series I have ever watched in my life). I am a professional referee myself, I do division 2 basketball games and as part of my job I analyze referees and I can assure Lakers fans that the referees are not out to get you. Just because the Lakers have had games fixed for them for over a decade going back to the Shaq era, doesn't mean they have to give them every single game.

2010 finals = a national crime caught on TV. The NBA Finals MVP should've been handed to Joey Crawford and his refereeing crew, not Kobe who shot 5 of 20 or whatever it was.
