Ron Artest shares his take on playing on Martin Luther King Day

Perhaps this serves as both a dose of comic relief over the Lakers' 99-92 loss Sunday to the Clippers and perspective that Martin Luther King Day reflects causes far more serious and consequential than a basketball game. As only he can, Lakers forward Ron Artest explains in the video below what it means to be playing the Oklahoma City Thunder on Martin Luther King Day.

History through the eyes of Ron Artest. Love this guy! And he mentioned Gandhi and Lincoln and Mandela as well, so he had his context down, and the fact that who WOULDN'T want to sit front row... once things quieted down. I always felt Gandhi is probably a closet Blazer fan (like Dan the Man)... in whatever incarnation he's at now. And don't get me started on Honest Abe hopin' the Bulls get over their injuries.

And finally a dedication to…Yes, Yes, yes, Justanothermambafan

Gotta love Ron Ron.

@Lakerholic – Never apologize for your passion. Keep bringing it. I enjoy reading your posts.

@Tom Daniels. Agree with your post at 1:18pm. That is the reason why I have more patience with this team particularly Kobe, Pau, Lamar (because the also played internationally) and Fish (age).

@63 Footer – Now that you’ve dropped some insight into Rodriguez; the question that begs to be answered is what do you have to offer today musically?

@Justa – I’m glad your pom poms are intact :-). Now give me a S-O-N-G…

Nice PG battle earlier today btw JWall and DWill.

JWall 19pts/5reb/15 asst
DWill 28pts/4reb/11 asst

Also, if Griff punked the Lakers with 18pts/15 reb yesterday...then I'd hate to hear the description of what he's doing to the Pacers with 36pts/12 reb thru 3 qtrs.

If you don't like watching Wall and BG then to quote that Sac Kings announcer...You Don't Like NBA Basketball

Count me in as yet another one of Fisher detractor!

Fish is KILLING the team period! on both offense and defense. I saw the game against the Suns and could confirm how PATHETICALLY BAD a defender Fish has became.

Steve Blake is just an average defender and the High Pick n Roll successfully rub him out about 60% of the play. OTH the High Pick n Roll was 100% successful in taking Fish completely out of the play, leaving the Lakers to fend for themselves 4 - on - 5, EVERY single time.

UTTER STUPIDITY is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. That is Derek Fisher against the Pick n Roll!

At least Steve Blaker knows that he has to vary his approach, sometimes trying to fight through the pick, sometimes going over it and sometimes going under it. For sheer stupidity Fish ALWAYS predictably just tried to fight through the pick which was always ended in failure since he's always smaller than the pick.

It has been said before that no one PG can stop another NBA PG and that's true. It takes teamwork. However it DOES MATTER how much and how often and how hard (or easy) for the rest of the team to help out its PG. A PG that is so utterly and ridiculously easily broken down like Fish can put a toll on his team.

Last but not least SLOWNESS does count. Fish's slowness to recover from a Pick n Roll always leave his team short-handed against the opponents 4 against 5. That's what I'm talking about.

Somebody mentioned Fish's intangibles such as leadership beside stats? OK, he can do his intangibles from the BENCH. The bench is where Fish belongs nowaday so he does not KILL his own team every single game.

@ L Rob:
Thanks man.

Like I said, my love for D Fish is through and through, but he really has been playing like shit lately. I wonder if it's personal issues, because I don't really think it's his age so much.

OH NO.. first its ouchhhh then professor gueco now troy...

The dark side of the force cannot afford any more casualties.. Looking for a few bad men.. Pls submit ur applications to join the evil REBEL ALLIANCE. Some job prerequisites include a very tough personality, a pessimistic outlook on life, basic command of english language, time to watch games and constructively attack laker players as needed... and some extremely thick skin would be a bonus.

Nothing like a woman's intuition.

So now one of the leaders of the Half-Empty Club calls their bashing and hating tactics "constructive attacks."

Preach Yellowfever, Preach!!!! LMAO!!!!!!!!

I just loved it the way Kobe said that his team was PUNKED by LAC and Blake Griffin. Bravo!

That's the 100% truth and hopefully will lift the team out of its complacency doldrum.

Win or lose the Lakers have been playing like WUSSIES for far too long. As the schedule is about to get a lot tougher, it is time for the team to MEN UP!

Nice guys finish last. They should understand by now that PHYSICALITY is what separate men from boys and winners from losers.

The little altercation involving Odom and Artest's rejections should be a start. It is high time they should be playing a brand of MEAN AND THUGGISH basketball if they are to have any hope of repeating.

In the NBA you don't win with just skill, you win with THUGZBALL, it's been proven over and over again.

Lose the GIRLY act and MEN UP and play with an attitude Lakers!

OK, he can do his intangibles from the BENCH. Posted by: Psycorp | January 17, 2011 at 02:30 PM

LOL! Now that's a funny line. Now stop it! Stop it now!!!!!

"I hate the waste of the last years of Kobe greatness on soft and uninspired play by the rest of his team!!"

___________

I have to agree with "NG" on this.

The Lakers aren't built around their PG. The team was built around Kobe and they put some big BUCKS in Bynum, Gasol, Odom & Artest. I don't see how a 6'3" PG in the triangle is wreaking havoc on the entire team's defensive & offensive schemes. If anything, Fish is overpaid by $1.5M but it "ain't" my money!

It seems to me that the team is more committed to winning a game offensively than defensively and I write that because of their pathetic love affair with the 3pt shot so early and often in the shot clock. If you're going to commit to the offense, at least "run" the darn sequence.

You have a HUGE front line - USE IT!! If Pau is going to whimper and settle for soft jump shots, then put him on the bench and replace him with DC. At least that kid has the "cajones" to go in the paint and mix it up!

Anyway, if we're all going to agree that this is just the regular season and the team is happy with "pacing" themselves through the remainder of the season in order to be healthy for the playoffs, then all of this posting is "moot" and should be saved for the "real" season. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying watching the Clippers trying to win another game even though many naysayers they have no chance in heaven of making the playoffs; I hope they prove them wrong. Hey Lamar: Now that's ENTERTAINMENT!! Roll Em'!!

sorry - identity crisis... antyfed is frmkt

Don't believe I'm saying this but..I agree!!!

888,

Like I said I don't hate Fisher, I hate his game.
I like Fisher, but I liked him a lot more when he played with Utah and Goldenstate.

All the team has to do is play to win, not like you're SUPPOSED or ENTITLED to win.

We just won 7 straight before this, and 9 of 10. Props to the Lakers for that! Yesterday was one of those Sunday day games the Lakers hate playing and they played against a team that came in with a chip on their shoulder and playing at a high, confident level these days. So the Lakers ran out of gas on a dreaded day game, big deal. Look at the good teams losing to stinkers in today's day games. Suns over the Knicks in New York. Wizards over Utah. Detroit over Dallas with Dirk back. Not you frmkt, but all this rant over a very predictable loss is ridiculous. Frankly, I saw a lot of good things out there yesterday, too.

Rofl!!!!!!!!!! thanks ;)

Also, I WANT the Clippers to do well. I WISH Lebron went to the clippers. Why? I want an amazing LA city rivalry. A bitter fight to the end.. would be so sweet, obviously with the Lakers prevailing. But I would LOVE it.

888,

I hear you and like I said earlier, the past 2 or 3 games I haven't bashed on fisher.
In fact I've said bring fisher back in. I actually do say - good job fisher or fisher played well tonight, when he plays well.
But Fisher doesn't give me very many chances to say that.

Magia32

I'm just messing with you, man. I know you bleed Purple & Gold! I've been on these blogs since 2007-08 and one thing has never changed --- the love/hate relationship between the bloggers and Fisher's game. So lamebrains like me defend him for the love of the team. Diandra, on the other hand, clearly has an agenda with D-Fish on a whole different level. She loves the man "through and through." That's some pretty heavy stuff, brother.

Lose the GIRLY act and MEN UP and play with an attitude Lakers!

Now if you can get Pau to stop playing like RUPAUL, you might be OK. Just Sayin...

I just had Fish and Chips for lunch...

It was delicious, especially with the malt vinegar...This is not McDonalds Filet of Fish we are talking about...

This is your authentic Fish and Chips, some fresh Cod and french fries...If you do not know about this, ask Caliphilosopher next time you see him on...This meal is very common over there, like our hamburger and fries...

After ordering I was anxious to get my meal, but on the same note...I knew exactly what I ordered...

I knew I'm not getting Salmon, Halibut, Ahi Tuna, Yellowtail, or Swordfish...I knew I was getting a nice piece of battered and fried Cod...

My point: LEAVE DEREK FISHER ALONE...He is what he is, and the Laker organization is happy with him, or they would have not re-signed him to another 3 year contract...

The Lakers have many problems, and since all the FISH hate spewn here...Everytime I watch the game, I look to see how his substitutes have fared...

Blake gets constantly burned...in fact Fish does a better job of keeping his man in front of him and getting the occasional call for the charge...Blake is shooting terrible...so much I waived him on my fantasy team...

So please give the man some respect...he has earned it...Like I said the Lakers have many problems, and all our woes are not because of Derek Fisher...

MM - just curious...next time you get a chance to interview Kobe...please ask him how he feels about Fish...Inform him of the hate posted here about Derek, and see what Kobe has to say about it...

I think it's time that everyone panics.

Everyone.

Completely.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

@LEW

EXCELLENT post at 3:56!!!

I would love to see that interview will Kobe waxing eloquent about his 5 time back court partner.

I get frustrated with Fish, just like others, but I do respect what he's brought to this team and haven't seen anyone come in here and play so well that the unseat the Fish.

He will shut the mouths of all the doubters come playoff time.

He will be clutch in those moments when others are too scared to step into the moment.

He is D. Fish, and he is a CHAMPION!

If Steve Blake was playing the majority of the minutes and not getting it done, he would be criticized and he would deserve it.

The reason that Fisher shoulders so much of the blame is because he so rarely has one of those games that shows why he is starting. As it is judged now, anytime the Lakers win means that Derek Fisher played great. In other words, if he doesn't single handedly cause them to lose the game, then he exceeded expectations. That's not really what you want out of a PG.

Nice take Ron...cannot argue with that!!

@Magia 32

If the best things you can say about D-Fish are his years with Golden State & Utah then you are clearly IGNORING his historic 0.04 second buzzer-beater over the Spurs in 2004 playoffs AND ignoring the playoff series with Spurs a few years before that when he went 15 of 20 from 3-POINT RANGE...STILL an NBA Playoff series record.

Hating on someone doesnt mean you throw darts at their picture...

HATE is the OPPOSITE of APPRECIATE & based on that definition you are CLEARLY a D-Fish HATER!!
