Matt Barnes expects to participate in running drills next week

No matter how much progress Lakers forward Matt Barnes may be making regarding his surgically repaired right knee, he remains aware of not over rushing his eight-week timetable.

But given the relentless nature of his rehabilitation since having surgery Jan. 11 to repair a torn lateral meniscus on his right knee, he's made enough progress to begin working on the elliptical machine and continual weight lifting. It's also proven solid enough that Barnes believes he can begin participate in running drills next week.

"There's a stretch run coming up. I want to be back and stay there. I don't want to be back too early and then have to take a few steps back."

That's been the common theme Barnes has reiterated to fans via Twitter, which has consisted with consistent daily updates surrounding his rehab. It's not so much a tool to make feel a sense of accomplishment so much as it's been to stave off continual questions from fans about his injury.

"I'm just anxious to get back, but at the same time, I don't want to jeopardize myself by coming back too early," said Barnes, who is expected to return with five more weeks. "So I'm just waiting it out."

Lakers will have about $90 million already on the books then ... not happening.

But hey ... can you really doubt the Lakers ... this team got Kobe Bryant for Vlade Divac and Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown.

HAHA these refs reffing the Knicks heat game are too funny.

Jon K.

Earlier you posted "just one more reason to hate the Knicks"

I'm just wondering why you hate them.

Magia32,

For denying Elgin Baylor a Championship.

I've never liked the Knicks. It's part of that New York/Los Angeles rivalry.

Jon,

Gotcha, I was just wondering.

lebron's back to basket game is surprisingly bad. he pretty much lost the knicks game trying to prove that he can be a post presence.

@MVP… Thanks for your support and understanding about what irks me. I should probably be used to the ongoing bias against Drew that runs deep with certain posters on this blog and among Lakers fans in general. It’s not a secret that Drew is clearly the most polarizing player on the team right now. I had foolishly hoped the great heart and effort he displayed in the playoffs and the huge impact his recent play has had on the team’s defense and performance would have swung the pendulum to positive ground but obviously that has not happened. Frankly, I doubt some of these fans will ever embrace and support Drew. I wonder if they even cheer when Drew blocks a shot or makes a dunk.

How could any Lakers fan begrudge Andrew Bynum being selected to the All-Star Game? Nobody is arguing that there are not other center candidates who may also be deserving of being selected to the All-Star Game but I find it puzzling and disconcerting that there are so many Lakers fans on this blog who are truly arguing that Drew is not a deserving candidate despite the 660K votes he has received and the simple fact that he is heads and tails better than the other center candidates being suggested.

Andrew Bynum is a Laker and forgive me but in my mind that means I should want good things to happen for him, especially when he is deserving.. If that’s being a biased homer, I’ll live with that. Loyalty and supporting your team and players may not be the rage in these days of fantasy sports and Tea Party talk radio vitriol but they work for me. There are very valid reasons why Drew should be given the starting center spot for the West and most of the reasons put forth for not selecting him simple demonstrate the posters bias against Drew or inability to fully appreciate his value and import. If the shoe fits and you find yourself insulted, then most likely you deserve it so go ahead and whine.

My untrustworthy laptop doesn't have much interest in visiting here tonight... it took me five minutes just to load this page. But, glad to see that Matt Barnes is working so diligently to come back and that he's keeping people informed... which is as good a segue as any to ask who here tweets? MM has a ton of followers so I figure it's got to include some of the regulars here. Identify yourselves! Mine's @davem234

Whoof. Still recovering spiritually from my Holiday Hell. Still a Laker fan, still love the Blog. Saw that LakerTom and hobbitmage have signed a truce. Congrats, gents, you are both waaaaaaay too smart to play those games.

My faith in honesty, open dialogue and love in general have been...challenged recently and this Laker team has caught fire at the exact right time to help me get through it.

Looking forward to some more stellar play from Lamar. love how Kobe's managing the regular season. pau will find his resolve come March and I like how Luke is looking as Barnes primary replacement.

I'd still like to see Ron get some action in the low post. he's generally played by a guy who can't defend him and he makes it easier by camping out on the 3 point line. A cut through the lane or two will help get him going down low and since he's such a streaky shooter, getting a couple of close ones to fall will only help.

Blake and Brown look like they might be coming out of their slumps, too. Brown missed some easy dunks and Blake has stopped trying too hard.

@wesjoenixon - I wouldn't bet on Deron Williams coming to the Lakers, they like to pull coups for the most talented bigs around. That would be either Dwight Howard (available in 2013) or sticking with Bynum (which by 2013 we should have a pretty good idea of whether his injury status is perennial or if it has been a series of flukes, also he and Odom are under contract but team holds the cards). In 2013 we have some dough coming off the books.

2013 will be full of movement for the NBA and depending on the CBA, possible contraction and other all sorts of madness and we could see a complete overhaul of the Lakers via free agency. But first...threepeat.

O J Mayo suspended for 10 games after failing the drug tests. Who said to trade Shannon for OJ? Whoaa!!! an embarrassment to USC Trojans.

Jon K,

You said last night, this blog has never been the same. Seriously.

Look at the posts just for today haggling, wrangling over Drew's presence in the ASG. Back and forth debates and nobody wants to give in. Just compare it to the time when we we started

http://lakersblog.latimes.com/lakersblog/2005/10/the_lamar_odom_.html

Our moderators at that time was focused on the blog, not tweeting, not going for face books and not one but two close brothers and treat the bloggers as their family. Today, we don't even know who this kid stalking at Jon K with all kinds of malicious posts. It appears and stays for almost an hour without being noticed. Seriously, times have changed for the worst.

Going back to your Knicks comment, well what Baylor failed to achieve, it was a sweet revenge in 1972. We have been cheering for the Lakers in the Far East without any internet, cable, TV but just through a newspaper clipping on the standings of NBA team. I was lucky to watch the first Championship at Forum against Don Nelson's bouncing ball. That was my start Laker fascination but yet to young fanatical Turks, it's incomplete because we criticize the Lakers. We are supposed to adore them 24/7.

Seriously, Messrs. Medina, Luomena and Mike James when do you start putting more quality to your Lakers Blog?

sup everyone

SO very busy at work lately I haven't had any chance to post and just now got caught up.

I see I missed another battle in the ongoing Bynum Wars. Thank god for that.

I love Socks. I want him to stay healthy and have a long productive career with the Lakers and become an ASG fixture. I think he deserves it this year because it's a popularity contest, and he's popular. But whatever - if he doesn't get chosen by Stern or the coaches, then so be it. I hope it continues to give him motivation to become more beastly!

Thanks to everyone who voted for me to go to the ASG. I fear it is for naught. MM said he's not taking me, and you can't fight city hall - you know? Oh well. I'll be more consistent in my efforts next year.

I'm looking forward to the game tomorrow. It's the lowly Queens so I'm hoping for another beatdown wire to wire lead kinda game. I never get tired of those! Looking ahead to Sunday I want to see focus and effort. We're the better team. I'd love for the Show to prove it to the pundits who continue to rank us low, say we're too old and otherwise discount us. Whatever. See you in June suckahs! Make sure you bring that little battery-operated TV with you on the boat so you can watch our parade.

GO LAKERS!!!!!

Edwin - I've put the comments back on moderation so that these trolls can't get by anymore. It's something unfortunate about it because I know the insta post was a big hit and lauded by you initially. But I agree that there needs to be more order here and feeling of community. I'll accept responsibility that I should've put moderation in order earlier

Bynum battle?

Don't have time to slog through all the same ol' doubtful, questioning yada bla
The only question is, how great is he? He's playin' great. Great attitude. Great all over.

If he makes the All Star game, great for him.

If he can stay on the floor, he'll have multiple All Star appearances. Any questions?

GO AB, GO Lakers

Edwin Gueco,

"You said last night, this blog has never been the same. Seriously."

I'm sorry, man. I'm not sure I know what you are talking about. Was it me who posted this?

That's not how I feel.

I do miss Kwaminus of the Golden Calves though.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

LakerTom,

you wrote: Andrew Bynum is a Laker and forgive me but in my mind that means I should want good things to happen for him, especially when he is deserving..

my response: When you substitute the names Sasha, Mbenga or Lamar
your Laker fervor has not been the same. No playing time for Mbenga.
Trade Lamar. etc. Before you start, you have also said run Lamar at pg/point-
forward.

I'm asking you *NOT* to be a hypocrite. If you say you want good things to
happen to all Lakers, then having our bench players do well should be a
goal of yours. You were *NEVER* supportive of Mbenga. You should have
been because you're a "Lakers fan".

What gives you the "moral high ground" in this conversation?

This is the point of the entire discussion: As different people, with
different backgrounds, we have different opinions about different players.

To say that you prefer Bynum is accurate, and in my opinion acceptable.
For you to consistently apply your beliefs to others and publicly
castigate them continuously for publicly not agreeing with your beliefs seems
to be against the founding principles of this country. The continuous
ducking of the hard questions is deplorable from an intellectual
rigor standpoint.

I haven't seen one person who has said that they don't want Bynum to be
an all-star. They've just argued that according to *their* beliefs it shouldn't
be this year. Which oddly enough seems to match the belief of Bynum
himself.

Here's a better/different question for you: When multiple people accuse
you of being a cyber bully, when it comes to Bynum, why aren't you
disturbed by that accusation? Is it your desire to be known as a cyber-bully?
FYI, I don't know that anyone has used that phrase/word, but repeated
references to your overbearing opinion/attitude on this matter should
certainly be an adequate substitute for it.

Have a good day.

Go Kobe!
Go Lakers!
