Pau Gasol shares a Spanish New Year's tradition

The Lakers' game Friday night against the Philadelphia 76ers will likely end shortly before New Year's Day, leaving the team, media and Staples Center personnel alike scrambling to wrap up an evening's work as quickly as possible so they ring in the New Year.

Let's just hope the traffic isn't that bad.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol already has his plans mapped out, probably joining friends and engaging the Spanish tradition of eating 12 grapes as midnight strikes.

"12 grapes brings you luck," said Gasol, a native of Barcelona, Spain. "You have to drink the Champagne to get them down."

I got rear-ended last week by some moron and have been laid up with a fractured neck. yeah it sucks but I'm a bit better now. Those damn pain meds had me hallucinating about the Lakers 30th championship...and Kobe playing 'till he was 50, it was awful. LOL I was hoping to win Ron Ron's ring so I could sell it and get me a new car :-) I'll be on more often...promise! Definitely not a good way to end the year but looking forward to a better one in '11. Thanks my Laker family! Your prayers are appreciated. Hope you all have a Happy New Year!

lets leave the spanishs traditions to pau gasol

eat one grape for every second in the countdown*

Happy New Year, Lakerholics!!!!!!

We have this tradition in Brazil too. I've found it to be a bit of a pain, 12 grapes is a lot but... Also, wearing a brand new underpants brings you luck.

LAMAR ODOM ALL-STAR GAME OR BUST – NO LO ALL-STAR NO PEACE !! BANDWAGON
*_________________________________________________________________________*
*Time and time again, Jerry West read critiques of Lamar Odom's play and became more
agitated with the commentary. "He's one of the most underappreciated players on
this Laker team," West said. "When I see the press get on him for not scoring, that's not
who Lamar Odom is." James Worthy looks at Odom's 14.9 points on 58.5% shooting
(fifth-best shooting percentage in the league) and 10.8 rebounds (eighth best in the league)
a game and concludes his experience in the 2010 FIBA World Championships increased
his aggressiveness. "I really think Lamar Odom has wanted to be an All-Star and to be
recognized as an All-Star," Worthy said. "I think this year is a good chance for him by playing
overseas Internationally, coming back in great shape and having a great start, I think the voters
will think heavily about him."
*_________________________________________________________________________*
(01) HTJ - OWNER - But on a happier note, how about that Lamar? Finally playing ball like
we'd hoped 5 years ago. 16.6/11.4/3.6/1stl. Sounds like an all-star line to me. And that's a
bandwagon you can throw me on. LO - All Star Game or Bust!
(02) JUSTANOTHERMAMBAFAN – CO/OWNER- Alright - can someone please explain why
I'm not the owner, driver and manager of the Lamar for ASG and 6th Man of the Year
bandwagons?? What's a girl gotta do to get a post about LO read around here? I've been on that
bandwagon since he BECAME a Laker. Geez...
(03) MAMBA24 – DRIVER - Keep on Ballin LO you'll get there!
(04) 63 FOOTER – RIDING SHOTGUN - LAMAR ODOM ALL-STAR OR BUST BANDWAGON - hey,
I've been riding that little red wagon for a long time. But now, with the Worlds, I think more people
will take a look at him, and maybe the All-Star coach'll reward his efforts.
(05) JEFE101 - As far as Odom's All-Star Quest goes, "Get out of my way Saturn!"
(06) CYBERCOSMIX - L.O. all-star bandwagon: Absolutely L.O. should/will be an all-star! The Lakers should match the 4 all-star count of the '98 team (Shaq/Eddie/Nick/Kobe). How about Kobe/Pau/Drew/L.O. in 2011! Not only will L.O be an all-star, but 6th Man of the Year!!!!!
(07) DON’T BLAME DEL HARRIS - Lamar Odom. All-Star. Nuff said.
(08) PSYCHEDLAKERGIRL - Now - just watch LO. Watch him with the starters, watch him with the bench. He's leading, he's running, he's decisive and excited. If LO is happy and able to play to his natural skills and persona, I think the team is happy. There's a lot of good that come's with team chemistry.... While D-Fish is still my #1 fave, LO is gaining momentum. And I certainly wouldn't have said that 3 years ago. But then again after D-Fish, I love the whole team and would have a hard time ranking all of them. Funny how that happens
(09) MAGIC PHIL-
(10) LAKESHOWINPHX - L.O. will be the next laker to get a triple double. all is good in LAKERDOM!
(11) KB2FOE - I feel like I'm on an episode of the classic tv show Wagon Train! L.O. all star? GIDDY UP!!
(12) LAKERFANINCOWTOWN - LO deserves his due - He's an all star this year or the voters need their heads checked!
(13) D(EREK) J(ETER)
(14) ROSS - LO was FIBA great & shows signs of keeping it up! If he does he will be an all star & also win the sixth man
(15) LROB - Yep I'm down with the Lamar All-Star bandwagon. We've been waiting for this LO for a long time. Now that LO's polished up his act and showed he's got the knack He's ready for the Big Time...so says fellow New Yorker Rick James: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbWqX8cdnfk
(16) LAKERJ - After PLG's post I'm on the banwagon. LO=All-Star.
(17) MCLYNE - Please add me to the LO allstar bus as well
(18) NEWMEXICOLL - Without LaMar on our team we wouldn't be the great team that we are, or have been. He's SO unselfish, and just think the stats he would have if he wouldn't have deferred all those years. The Gold Medal has given him so much confidence and it really shows. Always been an LO lover!!!
(19) JACKIE - Lamar would be entertaining in the allstar game. He has good playground moves we never get to see
(20) EDWIN GUECO - am one of harshest critic of LO in the past but this year I have all praises on Lamar except for the Denver game. He rebounds, facilitates, shoots, slashes and a semblance of defense in the post. He is most qualified - more than an All Star. He should be part of the Olympic team in 2012.
(21) GINDC(AKA GDUB) - liked what both JWs had to say about LO...he definitely should get serious consideration for the AS team based on his play thus far...and Shannon as well.
(22) YELLOW FEVER - actually i change my mind... sorry lamar... big game james also contributed to many of our rings so wouldnt be fair to him...therefore i change my vote and i now defer to big game james..
(23) NOOB TUBER - yellow, i defer my vote to you …
(24) OUCHHHHH - 65 days, 65 votes for LO put me on the band-wagon @ #24
(25) ROCKY - There is no doubt that Lamar should be an All Star this year. What he's been showing
for the last 2 1/2 years is excellence and it's about time he's rewarded for it. He's even gotten better
since he got married to Khloe too. Khloe is a good woman.
(26) FAN OF THE MAMBA -Put me on the Lamar bandwagon !
(27) MCLYNE - LO deserves to be an All-Star this year!!! He is focused, a beast on the boards,
scoring, playing D, and in better shape than anyone else on the team right now.
(28) LAKERPEACE - LO is an ALL "around-do-everything-as-starter-and-reserve" STAR. This is for Larmar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DZ3_obMXwU
(29) BRIAN - Lamar's gotta make All star once before he retires. cmon
(30) CORNERJ - RIDING SHOTGUN2 - Lamar has stepped it up this year to a whole new level, and he richly deserves the recognition. In my opinion, he's now the single toughest matchup problem in the league, even more so than Kobe,Lebron, or Carmelo. Who exactly is the other team going to put on him...a guard, a forward, a center? No can do. There's a fatal discrepancy in height, quickness, dribbling ability, length, perimeter shooting, etc., that LO has over just about any other player the other team can put on him. Lamar Odom...NBA All Star 2010-11...it's time!
(31) NO MO PLATITUDES - MY QUESTION FOR THE "DEAR BLOG" For Whom PJ will lobby? Gasol or LO? what is your choice at the end of 2010? I will start with one VOTE for LO.

ECJ, take care yourself! I will drown some grapes and champagne for you tonight!!

Perhaps the LakersNations would follow the Easter Tradition and paint their 12 grapes in purple and gold before eating them tonight!!

Mamba24 my brother, we will take one game at the time. The Spurs are real and the chance that the Lakers will meet them in the Western C Finals would be quite a challenge!

Good Morning Wallace my brother. Yes one game at a time works and the Spurs are surely for real but...We're the Freakin 4 Dynasty, 16 time NBA Back-To-back Champion LA Lakers!!! We don't adjust to the competiton, the competiton adjust to us and...The only real competition The Lakers have is...The Lakers!!!! Happy New Years to you and yours Wallace!!!!!!

12 grapes with a champagne chaser? Sounds good to me. Well, actually anything chased down with champagne sounds good...

Bill Simmons knows his hoop. He's also so Celtic-centric what he says and wraps his bitter takes with cynical humor in order throw people off from his motives, that is to be a chowd-homer. He lives in L.A. and can't even stand going to Laker games. His article last season about being dragged to a Laker game and actually finding the crowd to cheer and boo at the 'right times,' when occurrences during the game called for it, was a backhanded slap to Laker fans.

In my mind he's a pompous jerk, the type of loser that comes to SoCal only for the weather and always bash the city for everything else. Funny? Witty? Maybe to some, to me he's more a jackass that thinks he's smarter/funnier than he really is.

- - -

Phil and crew need to be given a chance to three-peat. Sure, the team has their lapses during the season, usually due to a lack of energy / lack of urgency / complacency and such things. That was to be expected for a team that has gone to three-straight Finals. Even the showtime Lakers had '86.

As frustrating as it is to see, the blowout losses and whatnot, championships are won in June - not December.

Phil isn't an X's and O's coach - he gives the team certain philosophies, and has them run the triangle - but rarely do you see the Lakers run set plays outside of coming in out of timeouts or end-of-game situations.

Since the guys have to find their own ways, it can get messy at times - as when the team is just standing around watching Kobe play 1-on-5 or forcing shots - but this is the very reason Laker players are so highly valued around the league, the system forces them to figure it out.

That is invaluable come playoffs, innately knowing the offense rather than having the coach always send in plays, like many do.

Sometimes I wish Phil weren't so inflexible, but I'm not going to argue with success - 11 rings, 3-straight Finals appearances for this team are pretty good stuff. His teams find their own identities, he just orchestrates them. If anything though, he deserves to serve out this last year on his contract - if the poor play continues then they could look elsewhere in the off-season - but not now.

- - -

We're off to Universal Studios today, sticking around L.A. after that. See ya all in 2011 - should be sweet to wrap up another three-peat this year!

We are all truly blessed to be Laker fans!

I want to wish all our blog-family:

A VERY HAPPY/HEALTHY/PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!!!!!!

AS ALWAYS - AND FOREVER - GO LAKERS!!!!!!

hope the DVR works tonight! lol...

CYA ALL NEXT YEAR!

Looks like USA Basketball might want to stop buying polish for the 2012 games.

Serge Ibaka is close to officially being on the Spanish National Team.

Their Frontcourt depth would be a handful, even for a skilled American squad.
Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka. Plus their guard play is superb.

Happy New Year!!!

Can somebody here explain to me what's that?

JimJoyce,

you wrote: This team is so talented, and yet plays like crap so much of the time. Unlike San Antonio, Utah, Boston, which almost always play to their talent level, even though they're all less talented than the Lakers.

Why is it so difficult for the Lakers? That should be the focus of an entire column.

my response: The answer is *character*. They do not have the character to
pursue excellence day in and day out. PJ once said, that the Bulls lusted after
practice. You've *NEVER* heard him say that about the Lakers.

Before someone throws a rod ... We could cut that generalized statement
down to 4 out of the starting 5 lack the character. Kobe does have it. I can
say that with assurance because he's the only one who has made the all-star
team on both offense and defense. Yes, we know that defense is about
hustle not talent.

Someone is going to say that that's not human nature:

ex: MM wrote:
But the reasons remain the same. With how much basketball the Lakers have played in the past few seasons they are understandably trying to avoid getting burned out. They've frankly played an extra season's worth of games more than any team in the league. Success also breeds complacency, and the team has tried to find shortcuts out of boredom, wanting to pace, etc.

my response to him. That obviously didn't apply to the Bulls or the Celtics
who won multiple championships.

Here's a nugget: The Bulls & the The Celtics were defensively minded teams.

Edwin,

I loved your post: Edwin Gueco | December 30, 2010 at 07:47 PM

However, you don't really think that's going to change the blog dynamic
do you? There are some people who feel that having watched basketball
since the Dark Ages ... their view is correct, regardless of what the record
books may hold.

JimJoyce,

you also wrote: But as a member of the Lakers, he is a member of what is by far the most talented collection of players in the league, several of whom would be stars in their own right if they played for another team. But Kobe somehow can't see or accept this, and he managed to view them, in his own mind, as if they were like his high school teammates. That's just astonishing. (As was, let us not forget, 7-25 that night, which came uncomfortably close to being remembered as one of the all-time choke jobs in the history of sports.))

And it's clear that the other Lakers have had enough of Kobe's act. Occasionally they all put it aside and play together, and the results are awe-inspiring. But then they go back to the same old crap.

my response: Your arrogance is astounding. The Lakers are *NOT* the
most talented "by far".

Rajon Rondo vs. D-Fish. Which one has been an all-star?

Artest vs. Pierce. Who has been an all-star the most?

KG vs. Pau Gasol. Who has done the most?

Bynum vs. Perkins. Have you actually looked at what Perkins has done?

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/perkike01.html

he's been a better blocker, rebounder, & shooter than Bynum. Before,
you start talking about who Bynum plays with ... please understand that
Perkins plays with one of the best pg's, sg's, sf's & pf's in the NBA.

Before the Bynum supporters go berzerk, Bynum could be better than Perkins.
I'm actually *not* saying that he isn't better than Perkins. I'm saying that
the talent level is not *overwhelmingly* in the Lakers favor.

You continuously harp on Kobe. So ... When PJ said that Gasol was playing
soft and introduced him to Oakley ... Where were you then? When PJ
told Artest to *stop* shooting the ball, where were you then? When D-Fish
was shooting 1-7, were you eating a donut and missed the 20+ games? How
about LO 2-10? And just so we're clear about this, I've been posting these
stats for the last 3-4 YEARS.

Sam,

you wrote: Kobe pressing when the others don;t step up have falsely led you guys to believe he wants to glorify himself at the expense of the team. What I see is guys (his teammates) satisfied with themselves and looking for excuses for their sub par performances. Gasol and Odom need to raise their game if equal opportunity is what they are looking for not look for Kobe at every turn when things get complicated. I am not just talking about shots either. You know how many times I watch Gasol's man on offense beat him down the court or have a career night against him (think Darko or Higbert). It not about their numbers it about how they play the game and the attitude they play it with

my response: I've made this same point more times than I can remember.
Generally, after a post like this you hear crickets ... Then the next time
Kobe shoots the ball a lot, they'll scream about inside-outside basketball
and not address if Pau or Bynum or LO is actually in the right place to
receive a pass in the post. Eloquently stated though.

They don't wish to know what is true or false. They think they already know
and keep their opinions regardless of what facts say.

[ note: somebody is going to try and turn this back on me. I'm going to
knee-cap that effort right now. ~ 4 years ago, a certain trade was mentioned
regarding Bynum & Jason Kidd. LakerTom, said ... big men take longer to
mature. I said, "Ok". & waited for two more years. ]

[ note: A lot of bloggers have talked about our dominant center. I asked,
"How do you define dominant?" From all but one poster, I got silence.
But we still have a dominant center. ]

[ note: We lost the 2008 finals because Bynum didn't play. I asked, "How
come Pierce was the NBA finals MVP?" I got crickets. FYI, I said, "We lost
because of the play at the SF. Pierce punked Vlad. Even listed the stats to
support it. Even supported it w/ the Ariza trade & Mitch's comments/actions.
nothing but crickets. ]

LRob,

you wrote: Sloan and Pop are great coaches no doubt. But my question is if Pop’s approach is the model you’re holding up--how come he hasn’t been able to achieve a repeat?Posted by: LRob | December 31, 2010 at 12:00 AM

my response: Because Sloan had this misfortune to face MJ. Because Pop
had the misfortune to face Kobe Bryant! If either of these two aren't in the
league .... Sloan & Pop win multiple championships.

Island Priest,

you wrote: I always questioned if in the Finals Gasol is rolling can Kobe play a supportive role in order to win the chip? In my opinion I don't think his ego can allow that. I think it was in game 2 of the Finals when both Bynum and Gasol were dominating and Kobe went away from them to get his game going because he was concerned about the Finals MVP.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/gameflash/2010/06/06/28164_boxscore.html

Kobe was 8-20. His average for the season was 20.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bryanko01.html

His average for the season, which netted them #2 record in the NBA was
9.1-19.9.

Fyi, Gasol's average for the year was 7-13. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gasolpa01.html

Maybe you want to go back and check the records instead of your memory.
Artest was 1-10, Fisher was 2-8, the bench scored 15 pts. The Celtics's bench
scored 24 pts. We lost the game by 7 pts.

LakerPeace,

you wrote: We have to give the Lakers the benefit of doubt that they are somehow tired mentally and physically at this point. That's why I think it is more important for the Lakers players to be freshed (and injury free) in the playoff than getting HCA, specifically THIS season.

my response: So, why don't you think they'll be mentally tired in the playoffs?

re: physically tired. Artest has been to 1 championship. We've changed out
almost the entire bench. Farmar, Sasha, Powell & Mbenga are gone. Bynum
hasn't played a full season in 3 years. The physically tired excuse is
suspect. Unless you're specifically talking about Pau & Kobe. Wait a minute.
Didn't they both rest this summer? Nope. I'm not buying the physically
tired excuse. Not for one minute.

GET WELL SOON EAST COAST JESSIE – BANDWAGON
*_________________________________________________________________________*
I got rear-ended last week by some moron and have been laid up with a fractured neck. yeah it sucks but I'm a bit better now. Those damn pain meds had me hallucinating about the Lakers 30th championship...and Kobe playing 'till he was 50, it was awful. LOL I was hoping to win Ron Ron's ring so I could sell it and get me a new car :-) I'll be on more often...promise! Definitely not a good way to end the year but looking forward to a better one in '11. Thanks my Laker family! Your prayers are appreciated. Hope you all have a Happy New Year!
