Lakers vs Washington: Lakers beat Wizards in Andrew Bynum's return

Lakers 103, Wizards 89 (final)

In Andrew Bynum's return, the Lakers defeated the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night at the Verizon Center.

Bynum played his first game this season after sitting out the first 24 while recovering from right knee surgery.

Bynum played 17 minutes and had seven points, four rebounds and two blocked shots. He was just one for five from the field.

He got plenty of help as the Lakers improved to 2-1 on a six-game trip.

Kobe Bryant had 24 points on seven-for-13 shooting, playing about 23 minutes, none in the fourth.

Pau Gasol had 16 points on six-for-eight shooting, nine rebounds and seven assists in 30 minutes.

Lamar Odom had a double-double with 18 points (six-for-eight shooting) and 10 rebounds.

Lakers 92, Wizards 70 (end of third quarter)

The Lakers went to work in the third quarter, rolling past the Wizards.

By the end of the third, Kobe Bryant had 24 points, Pau Gasol had 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and Lamar Odom had 15 points and nine rebounds.

There was one strange moment in the third quarter. Bryant drew a foul on Al Thornton while shooting a three-point attempt. But Bryant missed all three free throws. At that moment, Bryant was three for seven from the free-throw line.

 Lakers 57, Wizards 46 (halftime)

The Lakers opened an 11-point lead at halftime because they were more efficient in the second quarter.

They shot 54.5% from the field in building a 13-point lead at one point.

Shannon Brown led the Lakers with 12 first-half points.

Nick Young, the former USC star, had 17 first-half points off the bench for Washington.

Lakers 24, Wizards 22 (end of first quarter)

With 6:09 left in the first quarter, Lakers center Andrew Bynum checked into the game.

It was his first timing playing since Game 7 of the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics last June.

Bynum had missed the first 24 regular-season games recovering from right knee surgery he had in July.

He was active right from the start, blocking a shot by Hilton Armstrong  with 5:13 left in the first.

Bynum finished the first with six points, one rebounds, two blocked shots and he altered two others, his seven-foot presence obviously a problem for the Wizards.

He played six minutes in the first quarter, going one for two from the field, four for six from the free-throw line.

Bynum was fed down low, drawing a foul. He made both free throws for a 13-10 Lakers leady.

But it was clear that Bynum still didn't have his timing down.

He got the ball down on the low blocks and rolled to the middle of the lane, only to shoot an airball layup attempt.

Still, with a few blocks on the books, opposing guards will merely SEE Andrew in the lane and will either pass instead of trying for a layup or alter their shot to avoid being blocked.

*Good luck Sasha.
*Nice to have Andrew Bynum back!
*Somebody stop Nick Young please.

Go Lakers!

today i was psychic and mentioned "turtles" and Bynum

i should have look closer at my globe to decipher the silhouette of joe smith

i hope the Lakers made the Guiness record of the OLDEST BB team ever.

waiting for more hip replacements??????????? high chairs??????

and investing in make up for photo shoots!!!!!!

soon the players on the bench will be older than some coaches

@Ouchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......

Lol posted on the previous thread about sasha being traded. Your post is funny though sasha needed to be gone,as well as luke:however making the team older is not the key j-smith is the wrong 1..don't think they'll get josh so easy, but older is not better. We just got ratliff's twin o well..get rid of phil's boy and that contract and then we can see some progress moving forward..............

BLOG CRUE
It was great talking to Sasha at the Coke Center for the past 4 years in _enver. He always signed my product. Good luck to you.

I see Joe Smith wears #8 for the Nets. What are the chances he wears #8 for the Lakers? I don't think so....

Colorado loves our World Champion Lakers!

I just wish Sasha good luck with Farmar and the Nets...they can show off their rings to the rest of the team...

I am very happy to see Bynumite back on the floor...A few more games and the Beast will come out...

Beauty and the Beast...we got rid of Beauty...no way we trade the Beast...

This just in...

News from New Jersey is saying there is a spike in Eyebrow Creme locally, with many retail outlets out of stock...

City officials are at loss for explaining the mad rush for the cosmetic item...Some sporadic rioting has been spotted at some Wal Mart locations...

Tune in for updates...

can we tweet Doc Rivers that with all the starters, the Lakers are 1-0 this season?

HCA in the playoffs!

I am not totally convinced if Joe Smith will pass the physical test.

It's great to have Bynum back. Time to fear us once again.

Good luck Sasha, and godspeed.

Free Sasha.

On Sasha Vujacic...

Unheralded, tenacious, pesky, potential, defender, two free throws. A Slovenian by birth, a Laker by chance, a hero by design. The Machine, or The Face as the K-Bros used to say.

I still don't feel like I ever got a handle on what Sasha could have brought ot his team. I often thought that, had he been given the same license to fail or succeed on the scale Farmar did, he would have become a key player. A streaky shot and propensity to commit...interesting...fouls kept him the third guard off the bench for most of his stay here.

I find it kind of funny that he'll be on the same team as Farmar, it speaks to Avery Johnson's desire to see better D to me. I think a change of scene for a player with Sasha's desire can only be a good thing. I know he most likely wanted to stay a Laker, but he wouldn't have played this year. Joe Smith will help beef up a reedy front court.

I just hope Sasha doesn't dump Sharipova for Snookie, fame isn't worth the eternal price.

Great post Jamie Sweet...I have a little 'what if' in the back of my mind on the Machine...

No matter what...I will miss him...

This trade seems to be purely money saving move by the Lakers (and who can blame for that?) I just hope the Lakers don't waive Joe Smith to save more money when Ratliff comes back. I expected the Lakers could get more than Joe Smith from Sasha trade. But it's done deal so at least we won't have anymore "Trade Sasha..." distraction (and entertaining thoughts.) Now, instead of looking outside for help, the Lakers can concentrate on improving their plays as a team for quest for #17. Go Lakers!

What a dumb trade. Giving up a number one pick for a 35 year old has been? I don't think the Lakers are serious about winning rings anymore.

Celtics will demolish this overrated Lakers team. And the natural order of the universe will once again be restored.

Go Celts!!

sasha had problems with Shaw

or Shaw had problems with Sasha.

remember the "disrespect" moment last year??????????

Maria trains in Florida and plays most of the times in Europe and east coast. obviously for Sasha is not a good change, from Champions to Chumps.

heyyyyyyy, let's not forget that Maria Sharapova is Russian too. so maybe Sasha will get his extension. see, here is some "knowledge". :-)

now the Nyets have the "Russian Bench Mob"

i hated the Phoenix moment with Dragic, but after a month, during the summer i had the guts to re-visit the 2008 finals. remember when sasha was on the floor and tripped Pierce?????????? in the big loss at home????????? after he scored the 20? in the previous game?????

so he had some attitude moments when frustrated by Allen or Dragic (that was more personal - national pride)

if u r looking at the Presidential pic of yesterday, and also at the video of lakers/obama visit, Sahsa is the only one not happy - maybe he already knew about it. but he did not smile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

at least it was a great memory for him to leave after the Obama visit and also with his 2 free throws in the Finals.

that was pretty cold, clutch and cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and if you love Faith, have some ………………………………

wasn't Joe Smith the most over-paid, over-rated player when he joined the NBA?

remember when like 2 years ago, some of you wanted him as a free agent.

so, deal with iT

also, the LUXURY tax, for this NEW SEASON, kicks IN only in January. so indeed it is a 9 million saving for Buss.

he is one of the owners who want to help Stern, to give some money for the "unfortunate ones" and to avoid the lock-out

so Sasha's salary go towards #18 and saving another season with KOBE at the helm

good enough?????????????????

I might be a little too early but what the hell:

u know, in Cali we eat healthy food, slow food and organic.

i really believe that Sahsa's hysterics will compliment Avery's voice.

wondering if EAR Farmy will be able to be on the same wave!!!!!!

This was an NBA trade, not a basketball trade. The only player worth a damn, Terence Williams, went to the Rockets. Both Sasha and Joe Smith could be bought out. The Nets got 2 #1's that will be made part of another deal, possibly involving 'Melo. To even discuss Sasha and Joe Smith as a motivating part of this deal from a basketball standpoint would be like saying the Lakers had plans for Adam Morrison, who we dumped Buzz Kill for because The Stache's contract had a year less left on it than Buzz Kill and for less of an annual salary. The 8-9 million savings in salary was the Lakers' ONLY motivation for this trade. So we lost a late #1 pick. No biggie.

In years past our 5th guard has ranged from Mike Penberthy to Shammond Williams to Coby Karl. None of them cost the team 8-9 mil. If someone gets hurt and the Lakers need to sign a guard, there are plenty out there we can get off the scrap heap. Hell, if the Nets buy out Sasha, he might even be available!

if not, please ask hobbitmage for advise. and i'm not talking about google, stats and …

talking about that … chi or Qi thing

We used to trade expiring contracts and our best draft pick for all-stars with upside.

I guess now we trade them for over the hill scrubs.

Seriously? This is the best we can do?

Leave it to an ignorant a$$ Septic to tease us for trading the 2nd worst player on our team. I don't know what's more pathetic: Clowning us for trading Sasha or trying to outclass us by signing Kobe's Big Sloppy Seconds to your team.

You won't be laughing in June when The Big Sellout is healing during company time during the Finals next June.

We really need Mark Medina back.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!!

@Lew: I highly recommend watching "Cooley High" where you will see/hear the original version in context. You will never play the Boyz II Men remake again...if you can stop your grown man self from crying like a baby!

He talked about this quite a bit actually. Also, notice that he wears nothing on his left knee anymore. For now, I just want to see him out there. If he can spell LO or Pau for 15-20 mpg for now, that's fine, then 20-25 mpg in a couple of weeks. I would love to see him back in a rhythm in about a month. Once his wind and timing are back, we'll see a stronger, smarter, more dominant, better Bynum. At least I hope so.

@Lew - I loved both versions. The harmony on Boyz II Men is impeccable, but I felt GC's raw emotion more. I usually give the nod to the original artist - unless the remake totally blows it away. Anyway thanks for posting and like Utz said if you see the movie it'll help you put it in context a little better.

Cooley High was an very good coming of age movie. The cast was top notch with Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs aka Freddie Boom Boom Washington, Garrett Morris aka SNL's Baseball's been berry berry good to me, and Glynn Turman aka the Mayor Royce from the Wire. Also the soundtrack is excellent.

Boyz II Men paid tribute to the movie it by naming their first album "Cooley high harmony".

My two cents on the trade....

I don't like giving away players. I loved the depth of having Sasha as an insurance policy in case Fish/Shannon or Blake got injured. Personally, I don't like writing checks for Home/Auto/Life insurance...but I can sleep a little easier knowing I got it.

I know this move saves Dr. Buss (8-9 million)in Sasha's salary plus a savings of not signing a #1 pick in 2011. I can understand why he did it. However, as I've said many times I don't concern myself with that side of the business. I focus on fielding the best team possible and this moves makes the team weaker IMHO. Now that I've spoke my peace I will support Joe, and of course I'll continue to sing the praises of this great Laker organization moving forward.

Great synopsis on the history of the song utz and LRob...

The Boyz II Men version was personal, for all 7 children sang that song at my mother's funeral services...

888 - which knee you talkin' 'bout? Not that special super-tech San Diego company brace he's got on under that wrap? That's supposedly the most advanced brace known to sp0rtskind at the moment.

Re some stuff from yesterday; I’m not bothered personally, but because I don’t think it should pass unmentioned; I really do have Bi Polar disorder. It’s not a personality defect; it’s a diagnosis of a disability. I’m proud of what I’ve done to treat and live with it. In my opinion, attacking somebody for something they are instead of something they do or say? Not cool.

Keen Observer (if you are the real Keen Observer)- I’m sorry if I said something that bothered you at some point, next time I suggest mentioning what it is and asking me to clarify instead of waiting and piling on. I never intended to offend you or anybody else personally. I’m not sure I know anything about you personally, and if I’m guilty of a fault, I think/hope it’s that I haven’t gotten to know you better in order to avoid this sort of thing.

UPDATE; wow, attacking a guy because his daughter got lead poisoning; even more uncool.

63

sasha and elton!!!!!!!. lol

goodbye yellow/gold - is his face purple????????????

lew - can't go wrong with a double shot of Floyd, eh?

I think Sasha's going to have a better time on the Nets and maybe get a chance to showcase a little and set himself up for a better trade or pickup next year during the lockout. He wasn't going to get much love or PT here right now; we're just too deep, and he wasn't delivering what Phil needed. But on the Nets he might have a better chance... simply time to move on. But it's got to be a little anxiety time for him; never fun to have to up-and-move.

Well, I guess trying to attack a guy, but not really knowing the difference between lead poisoning and asbestos is kind of a crimp in the effectiveness, even for an #$&@@@@.

I'm with those who are going to miss Sasha. I understand the move from a busine$$ standpoint, but I'm not sure it makes sense from a basketball standpoint. We've been losing to teams that have a lot of youth, energy, hops, and quickness. Joe Smith isn't going to help us a whole lot against such teams. We'll see how this pans out.

At the same time, I've got to say that I was surprised at how good Bynum looked. I thought it would take him much more time to look decent out there. He looks much more muscular and fit than ever, and his movement looked very smooth, with no indication of any self-constraint. Once he gets his timing back, look out. This could be his break out year...and the end of any hope the league's quick starters had for a chance to stop us from a threepeat. The Beast is back, babeee!!!

ouchhhhh - one has hair, one doesn't, both too worried about how they look. Elton will probably be remember longer. Sasha has the hotter girlfriend... sic, you get the idea.

@63 Footer - excellent selections. I never heard that one by 10 years before but really like it. Here's one goodbye for the Machine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWoSo6Cj8-M

LRob with the Night Ranger!!! I bet they're incredibly embarrassed with the clothes they were wearing circa 80's.

What do Sasha and Farmar have in common?
Both were recent Laker first round picks when we picked late in the first round.
So that spot in the draft seems to produce players who aren't that good and we want to ship to the Nets anyhow.

Now there are only two "Laker-for-Life" players left on the team....Kobe and Luke (excluding two rookies)

UPDATE; wow, attacking a guy because his daughter got lead poisoning; even more uncool.

i attacked his IGNORANCE of not checking the new HOUSING for lead poisoning. i did that when i moved/bought a house and my daughter was 5!!!!!!!!!! so the POISONING can be avoided!!!!!!!!! with a little bit of stats, home work, google … 9(to use Lakers, BB terms …)

Bye Sasha, we'll always remember the good times...From the archives and the auld lang syne;

Fire and Miss (the Sasha Song)

Sing along to the tune of “Fire and Rain,” by James Taylor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T35WXFOmwI

It was a few weeks ago when we all heard the news
The Slovenian team had taken an axe to you
I got up this morning and I wrote down this song
I just hope I get it posted before we cut you too

I’ve seen you shoot and I’ve seen you miss
I’ve seen you take shots that I know’ll never go in
I’ve seen enough bricks to build a Holiday Inn,
But you always think that you’ll make it this time
Won’t you just calm down bit, Sasha
You have just got to take your time
I just wish you wouldn’t make it so very hard
Defend without the other team going to the line
So we get some bench time for our two guard
I’ve seen you shoot and I’ve seen you miss
I’ve seen you take shots that I know’ll never go in
I’ve seen enough bricks to build a Holiday Inn,
But you always think that you’ll make it this time
We may have paid you too much cause you had a decent season
We know there’s better guys making half of what you earn
And can’t believe it but we have to hope that Mitch might have had a reason
I guess about machine repair there’s a lot we've got to learn
I’ve seen you shoot and I’ve seen you miss
I’ve seen you take shots that I know’ll never go in
I’ve seen enough bricks to build a Holiday Inn,
But you always think you’ll make it, for sure this time
I know you think you’ll make it for sure this time
You’ve got just a few minutes to turn it around now
So you’ll shoot it, you’ll shoot it and you’ll miss, now, Sasha

DO NOT WORRY, SASHA, IT IS STILL ALL ABOUT THE LOVE
GO LAKERS!

I hear you, but like I said in a previous post, our fifth guards have ranged from Mike Penberthy to Coby Karl to Shammond Williams to Sasha. Only Sasha cost the club 8-9 mil for a season, or would have had he stayed. This was inevitable. I now understand HOW it was done, because the Nets are under the cap, so the salary for salary rule does not apply. It would also not surprise me if Sasha was bought out of his contract by the Nets unless they think that they can reconstruct the 2007-08 Bench Mob backcourt. If so, good luck. He also might wind up as a part of another deal with a team looking for cap space next season.

I'm with you in terms of not involving myself with the finances of the team, but the truth is that Dr. Buss has sacrificed bigger profits for championships. Sasha was rotting at the end of the bench, so if we have an injury, three guards can share minutes with Barnes or the Lakers can sign one for cheap. If God forbid that happens, that someone might wind up being Sasha anyway.

The left knee is naked!

LRob,

Twas mcInye that posted said Seger. I agree though, they were very enjoyable. Bob used to put on a great show.

PHRED!, how are U?

Anyone have an opinion on the True Grit remake? I wasn't a Wayne fan, but I have a soft spot for True Grit and The Cowboys.

Re-post (sorry). Should we even CARE whether we lose a late-round draft pick? Damn right we should! Need we be reminded that the 2001 draft’s last pick in the first round was a kid named Tony Parker? Or that the 35th pick of the 2002 draft was a guy named Carlos Boozer? That Rajon Rondo was selected at #21, and Tayshaun Prince at #23? That Aaron Brooks and Kendrick Perkins were both #27s, Josh Howard a #29, Steve Blake a #38, Monta Ellis a #40, Matt Barnes a #46, Mo Williams a #47, Kyle Korver a #51, and Luis Scola a #56? Hidden gems all! THAT’S WHY YOU DON’T THROW IN A LATE-FIRST-ROUND PICK TO GET RID OF A SASHA VUJACIC!

@MVP - I hear ya. But it boils down to one thing for me. Are the Lakers putting a better team on the court tomorrow than they did today?

You mentioned earlier that Sasha hit two of the biggest free throws in Lakers history, good point. (of course they don't top Capt's 2 with the Lakers down 1 gm6 in the 88 Finals). What if the Lakers need 2 throws to ice the 2011 chip, Fish has fouled out and Kobe's shooting like he did 2nite? Sasha is the guy I would want up there...what about you?

@63

do u remember my Karma you suggested?

i can come back as KB's left shoe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was thinking of coming back as Bynum's knee, but if he has on more injury and "that part" breaks OFF, i will vanish in the dust for the 2nd time. and i'm not sure what offer the genie will give me for the 3rd time around.

so i prefer sniffing Kobe's feet. in some circles, it's called shrimping. this site should be also educational. so go for references to Urban Dictionary. not U, 63, some others!!!!!!!!

How many Keen Observers do we have around here? Hey, if true love means never having to say you are sorry, then internet anonymity means that there is nothing (or nobody) to forgive.

Forgive an unforgiving bastard
The not so Real Keen Observer | December 14, 2010 at 11:50 PM

"real" and "keen" is already a "welcomed" pleonasm

but "not so real keen", besides being a cacophony or redundancy, it's more a bastardization.

on a different note, why hide beyond a screen name, don't be coward, be game!

otherwise Phred will call you an IMPOSTOR. an impostor of ouchhhhhhhh. more exactly, ouchhhhhhhh an impostor of YOU. do you really can handle to be ouchhhhhhhhhhh?

i have nothing to do with you!!!!!!!!!!!

poor choice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now if Phred takes his pills, and follows the directions i gave him above, maybe he can figure it out who said what, when, how, …

you confused him. a big de-service to a loyal friend.

do you think Ron's psychologist, psychiatrist would have been helpful if she would have lied to HIM??

think again!!!!!!!!!!! (we r talking about LOVE and #17)

I agree, plus we don't need to guarantee money for a 2nd round pick. As you and any other educated fan suspected, Dr. Buss was planning on mitigating the largest payroll in the league and Sasha was the only one that made sense. Despite what some crazies think on this boards we actually are a pretty good team. In fact we are the FREAKING CHAMPS! A few losses don’t equate to the end of the world! It’s a marathon people…
`
Once we get our WHOLE team playing together with chemistry and energy we WILL be the team to beat. No lottery picks here. People need to chill out. We don’t suck.
`
I'm not sure when or if anyone named Bynum an all time top 50 player or whatever (that would be nuts at this stage of his career IMO), but he completely changes the dynamic of our team in a very positive way as many others, including myself, have outlined in the past (don't have the energy to get into that one again and again). Also, we absolutely need to start Pau and Bynum together. Barring injuries those two will be unstoppable in the paint once they are on the same page, which will come in time.
`
As a side bar, Luke will never be traded until he has an expiring contract, if even then. Everyone needs to get that out of their mind. On a positive note he is a heady player who understands our game and at this point I consider him an overpaid coach who can spell our starting forwards for a few minutes a game. No team in the league has accurately predicted the value of 100% of their roster and if we have just one player that we tripped up on (two including Theo but he was low risk) we’re doing pretty damn good.

Sorry for the long post, hopefully at least one person is still awake!!

For anybody who is lamenting our lost draft pick; Hey, we weren't going to draft until the end of the first round anyway, and for $8 or 9$ mil, we could probably buy a higher draft pick from some team like phoenix that wants to save money by not actually drafting players.

I have to admit, though, that I have no idea whether Joe Smith can give us anything or not. I suspect that this trade went through when Caracter went down for a reason, that we wanted cap relief and a usable vet; so basically Joe will be replacing Caracter on the depth chart, which is probably useful but not essential. Probably Mitch went into the negotiations with the idea 1)We want to get rid of Sasha and his remaining salary and 2) we need a warm body, any warm body, to play 5 or 6 mpg- hey, theo was the first idea, lets keep the same theme going and grab another guy who qualifies for the Senior Discount at Denny's, so at least we save some money on the meal expenses.

"Salary cap expert Larry Coon of ESPN.com estimates the trade will save the Lakers $9.24 million, including the luxury tax."

_____

that's all this trade was about and anything else after that will be gravy. mitch is just gettin' warmed up. we still have time before the trade deadline and we have money to spend. this was a good trade for all 3 teams. houston gets production now, lakers get salary relief along with another vet - pj loves his vets - and nj is stacked with first round draft picks for the next two seasons. god, i love this game!

oh yeah. good luck to you sasha. at least you'll have an opportunity to play and possibly earn yourself another contract. the lakers did you a favor; the trade really was a "win-win" situation for everyone involved.

Hogan- I'm awake, and I agree. I do think that it is nice that Luke's contract really does last until the time when we are likely going into rebuilding mode. Who knows, maybe if we really show signs of slowing over the next couple of years we could really use some of our contracts to get new blood. I think pretty much everybody on the team will be a valuable trading piece by 2014. Ok, we can keep Kobe. And D Fish. Ron can fulfill the best of both worlds by giving us trade value, then showing his LA loyalty again by playing TE for the NFL team that Magic will bring to LA.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

We've got this totally planned.

Mark G- I think i lost a post, but I'll try again- Hey, I'm doing ok, thanks for asking.

I am definitely interested in the true grit remake. I don't think you can beat John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, but Kim Darby and Glen Campbell could be beat out in the best supporting actor category. They could also be beat out in the 'can you act at all, like better than a sixth grader) category, but that's just me being harsh.

now, that is pretty GOOD

Keen People - welp, you got me confused. Probably doesn't take much. After all, I'm just mostly past trying to figure out what the deal is and just wondering if there is a great contest between the contending Keens impending.

WHO WILL BE THE FINAL KEEN OBSERVER! WATCH! SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!

Yeah, beats me.

I think pretty much everybody on the team will be a valuable trading piece by 2014. Ok, we can keep Kobe. And D Fish.

Posted by: phred | December 15, 2010 at 12:27 AM

by the way phred

Fish is signed till 2013. not 2014. 3 years from 201011-2013.
no ONE, will EVER signed him again.
and by the end of the year, maybe you will understand WHYYYYYYY

if the contracts of pau, LO and Ron and Bynum expire by 2014, THEY HAVE NO TRADE VALUEEEEEEEE. ESPECIALLY AT THEIR AGE.

please, really stick to fantasy BB!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, if I was really going to edit myself, oh wait, I did. 'by 2014' does not mean 'in 2014'

While we're chatting here, what was your reasoning behind calling Lew's deceased mom a &^%$#?

201011-2013? Is that a date? By which no one will ever signed him again. Also I think maybe by 201011, all his base will belong to us.

So, anybody got any thoughts on Joe Smith? What does he have left to offer us? Not in a 'was that a good trade' sense, but rather in a 'I'm curious as to what Joe Smith can do for us' sense.

Not a bad showing for Bynum on his first game. As long as he stays healthy, Lakers are on the right path for repeat. He adds another dimension on D and another threat in offense and the best part of it, a restful game for LO & Gasol.

Joe Smith's acquisition is a win-win for both Lakers and NJ, good trade. Lakers got a big man to sub our PF while Caracter hones more NBA skill in the D'League, a savings of $9M from luxury taxes and if he doesn't fit in, they could easily drop him at the end of the season. Joe is a good shooter and will be playing only few minutes to give the needed breather for Lamar. If he plays good, he could threat or get playing minutes from Ron-Ron. Don't underestimate a old veteran sometimes they can be serviceable from the standpoint of BB wisdom, experience and support cast.

Will be back soon, now that Bynum is in the roster. I dunno how Faith sizes up the trade of his favorite SAsssssha who gave us some fondest memories of hairnet and the machine. I think he would be better of with the Nets as a showcase for next summer's free agency. Nets need a lot of cap space to land a marquee player like Melo and if SV resurrects his machine power, not bad to get a contract renewal as well.

Edwin- nice to see you. not sure if Faith thinks of herself as a 'him' though. : )

nice to have bynum back

I'm kind of curious about the Melo to NJ (or Brooklyn) thing. How far under the salary cap are the Knicks or the Nets? Who or what will they give up for Melo/another free agent?

I think that they have enough pieces to make a trade without giving up their core. Will we see a Knicks team with Amar'e, Melo, Felton and Wilson contending in the East? Do they need somebody else?

I do think that D'Antoni can compete in the east. Probably not enough. The Heat seem to have gotten past their Spoelstra issues and are going to gain an MLE player, CBA adjustments notwithstanding.

How much Cap Space does NJ have? Who do they have that are trade bait?

The Nets are obviously trying to get some space to get somebody. Who knows, maybe Farmar will even have value as a trading chip.

Things to think about between now and the trade deadline, and between then and the offseason after we win another chip (knock wood)

THE LOVE WOULD LIKE TO JUST TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO YELL!

WELL LA-DI-FREAKEN-DA! FOR REASONS WHICH ARE PROBABLY ONLY CLEAR TO pHRED AND THE LOVE

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE

GO LAKERS!

Question- how much to we owe Joe Smith for his contract this year? I don't want to rain on anybody's parade, but that is something to consider before we say that the trade gives us 9 mil in savings.

Hmmmm. Does it give us a more valuable contract to trade at the end of the season that Sasha would have?

I have so many questions, and so few answers. I tell ya, the gyre is widening and the poster can no longer hear the moderator. 'I feel like I'm fallin apart here, Ratso!'

awesome game.. some random post game comments:

- great to see bynum back on the court.. he looks much stronger. great sign he put some time in the gym and not just video games

- biggest beneficiary of bynums return of course pau... you could tell he had an extra bounce in his step and playing with a load off his shoulders which was probably more mental than physical.. he looked both more relaxed and aggressive and i think that energy was contageous,

- kobe is slowly getting more and more lift and strength in his legs and the jumpers are starting to fall

and also dont mind the TRADE.. some thoughts on that:

- we get a somewhat serviceable INSURANCE big man veteran (the kind phil loves) over an INSURANCE guard not getting any daylight on the court averaging 4 minutes a game... i'll take the insurance in the inside for 1.5MIL over the insurance on the outside for 5MIL given our injury risk inside which should come much more handy during playoffs against miami quartet of 7 footers and boston with the big diesel

- cant argues with the financial side but as a basketball fan disappointing mitch didnt make better use of that expiring contract like maybe goin after an impact player or even dangling lukes remaining 3 years (4 total with this season) in a trade.

- as for a late first round pick in 2011 lakers probably have no use for it considering phil never plays rookies and minutes will be very hard to come with our veteran packed squad for next 3 years anyways

- oh and sasha re-united with farmar.. LoL.. those two are made for each other!

yello- [HIGH FIVE!]

Good points.

phred [HIGH FIVE BACK] :-p

good night!

phred

joe smith like ratliff was signed for Vet Min. at their age and with so many years in the NBA is 1.4-1.5 mil.

and for other questions, you should ask Noah or Mark G why did they call my mom a bitch, and Dan Louema the Moderator approved.

they were sensitive and defending your Polarity.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (even if they were not aware of the reality)

so polarity, reality, u like poetry so make some UP. for the LOVE of the blog.

stroll down memory lane... joe smith 15 year vet.. taken first pick overall in 1995.. over some other very household names who are still making an impact in the league

1995 NBA DRAFT

1 Joe Smith.
2 Antonio McDyess.. still good role player in spurs
3 Jerry Stackhouse. with the heat??
4 Rasheed Wallace.. voluntarily retired
5 Kevin Garnett... if KG can run so can joe
6 Bryant Reeves.. what ever happened to big country?
7 Damon Stoudamire.. whateve happened to mighty mouse?
8 Shawn Respert
9 Ed O'Bannon.. i heard hes selling cars?
10 Kurt Thomas.. chicago bench?
18. Theo ratliff .. what do you know!

The trade for Sasha now gives NJ five first round picks as well as Favors and Murphy to dangle for Melo, whom they have been trying get.

Smith only makes $1.4 mill and nearly half his salary is paid by the NBA because it's vet minimum.
And the Lakers save on not having to sign a new rook next year.

Perhaps the Lakers figured Smith would be the best they can do.
It's not like other teams were going to beat down the door to get Sasha and of course no one wants to help the Lakers.

Good morning. Even at less than 100%, the Wizards' game was a great reminder of how much Bynum brings to the party. Looking forward to how he'll handle the back-to-back. As for Sasha, hopefully a fresh start is just what the doctor ordered.

Sasha freed.

Good Morning Laker Fam,

Nice game yesterday for Drew to get a little work in. I thought he looked good physically, moved around decent and appeared to have bulked up some. Great to see someone protecting the paint again.

Welcome aboard Joe. As the new kid on the team this song is for you.

Fever -

Stack was released by the Heat when they signed Dampier.

Shawn Respert - (Spartan alum) - heart condition forced him to retire early. He's currently in some management capacity with the Rockets. I see him seating behind their bench.

Stoudamire - I believe he's still an assistant coach with the Grizzlies.
