Kobe Bryant to play despite injured finger; Joe Smith gets in a practice

Kobe Bryant, who suffered a sprained right pinkie finger Friday night against the Philadelphia 76ers, said he will play Sunday against the Toronto Raptors despite the injury.

Bryant was injured in the first quarter of the game against the 76ers, but he continued to play.

Bryant told the media after practice Saturday that he was not going to "miss a game for a pinkie."

New Laker Joe Smith as able to get in his first practice Saturday.

Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said he might even play Smith Sunday against the Raptors.

Essentially, Bryant has only three fingers working on his right hand. That qualifies him in the World Guiness of Record. Now there is a fair comparison on fingers of Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson, I don't think the latter ever played with three fingers on their shooting hand.

LO did the right thing, take over. Do we expect help from Artest or Shannon to take over on that slack?

The dreaded justafication repost:

Now if the Magic could just trade for a new coach (Van Gundy is such a no-plan guy - watching the Magic run their O and then realizing they DIDN'T HAVE ONE, made me love Phil all the more), they might stand a chance. Still, Van Jeremy could at least call Arenas on his crappola if necessary.

Edwin Gueco - let us never forget how many broken noses the Logo played with. Lakers are just tougher.

What you get credit for playing with 3 fingers, he playing like crap most of the time. Just saying...

Mornin'....ummmmm afternoon peeps!

A lazy, rainy day in SoCal... gonna watch the game again, cuddle with the cat and dream of a 5-1 road trip. At least until that becomes a reality tomorrow. I mean, it IS the Raptors LOL!

Joe seems to be so very excited to be a Laker. Glad to hear he got a practice in. I'd like to see him get a few minutes tomorrow and catch a look at what he may be able to provide.

Hopefully the level of civility in here will keep going up. Thanks to Dan for doing some housekeeping.

GO LAKERS!!

63 - I had a couple of Q's for you... I'll post 'em on the RC.

JAMF, most welcome.

JUSTA HATER, ah, welcome back for another round of nose-tweaking the Lakers clan. Keep it closer to classy than crassy, please.

Saw Michael Beasley play last night as three more Blazers went down to injury. P-town might soon have more players on the injured list than the active roster. Wolves still not good enough to beat 8 semi-healthy Blazers, but Beasley and Kevin Love gave it a good try. I'd take either of those guys on my team anytime.

There will be a live chat going up tomorrow a little before 10 a.m.

Enjoy!

Kobe is a tough guy. Kobe is the pulse of the lakers.

If the X-rays of Kobe's right pinkie are negative, I personally guarantee that he may not shoot the ball well and do slam dunks in the upcoming games especially when they play against the Miami Heat on Christmas Day at Staples Center.

My Dec.25 prediction:
MIA: 116
LAL: 86
-kobe: 17pts 4rebs
-james: 31pts 9rebs
-wade: 27pts 7ast

Now that's a new flash...Kobe going to play despite his injured finger.

Josh - you 'personally guarantee that he MAY not shoot well' ?

LMAO!! Why don't you personally guarantee that he MAY bring about world peace? Heck - never mind - I will personally guarantee that.

DM,

I agree with that, you know, just like last year's Laker stomping by, ah, Cleveland, and you forgot to add Lakers Repeat as Champions again in 2011. I mean as long as we are following patterns, ha, ha.

Dan- Thanks, I'll keep it tight.

Yeah. Cleveland murdered the lakers last year, and I think Miami will do the same. But it's no important. For me,it's only an exhibition game. Not so important,I guess. Playoff games matters most.

I think the trade helps Phoenix because they're getting a decent big man in Gortat. Plus Pietrus will fit in their 3pt system since 75% of his shots are 3's.

Now who's going to back up DHoward? And does this make Redick expendable with the reuniting of the former GS connection of Arenas and JRich? I'm sure Orlando knows its not getting the same Turk from 2009. Hmmm now they have a QRich and a JRich.

Probably the biggest benefactor from this trade from a personal standpoint after Gortat is JWall. Now he won't have to worry about pleasing Gilbert, plus he has a legit 3pt threat to spread the floor. I really look for his game to take off when he gets healthy.

Oh yeah, Brandon Bass has got to be a happy man also. He'll finally get a legit chance to shine.

Is there any chance that we can get back Ariza? He's a scoring generator for our laker team.
[My Dec.25 prediction:
MIA: 116
LAL: 86]

Lakerholics- Mark my word, Christmas Day It's gona be UGLY. But hey it's only the practice season right....just saying. The Lakers play for RINGS, who cares about the regular season. 3 grand court side seats, who cares they play when it matters in the playoffs. HCA don't need it, we can win on the roads any time any place. Boston, Maimi, Dallas, Denver, Portland, San Antonio no problem. The 2X World Champions, who's got next, where the JY jelly.
Go Heat

My Dec.25 prediction:
MIA: 116
LAL: 86

Kobe may have 17, but on 25 shots.

One game does not a Championship make. You want THIS trophy...you've got to come get it!

@mdomingo - nice post on reg season vs. playoffs.

@LakerJ - we can't trade Ron Ron - his defense is needed against Durant, Melo, Lebron and Pierce. This team is structured to win now....they don't need Beas offensive and can't wait 2-3 years for Rubio to come around.

@ouch - Like you said Shannon's court awareness is not the greatest. I don't expect that to improve a whole lot in his career. Some players just have a better feel for the game than others. However, I do expect his defense to improve substantially. Remember he played solid D against Chauncey in the 2009 playoffs.

As someone who saw about 95% of Shannon's games at Michigan State, I thought he was very productive and lived up to his McDonald's All American billing. He was an integral part in MSU making the final 4 in 2005. His Junior year he avg 17pts, improved his outside shooting to nearly 40% from 3pt and was MSU's defensive stopper. His coach, Tom Izzo, raved about how hard Shannon worked to improve his game. So I beg to differ with your friend that said Shannon didn't deliver at Michigan State.

Shannon is not a very good ball handler or passer, but he is a good shooter and a great finisher. And can be a very good defender. If he had all the skills we want him to have (ball handling, court awareness, etc) the Lakers never would've been able to acquire him.

Here's a little treat from Shannon's Spartan days...

Not too worried about the December 25th game. Sorry, the Christmas game has been an annual event for Laker fans, as has the Finals.

Not speaking boastfully, but the Christmas game DOES seem inconsequential. Fun, but not important. A win would be nice.

Yes, the only reason why I want the Lakers to beat the Heat is I don't want to hear all the #$!% from heat fans. I can't stand seeing lbj on espn and how the media still praises the spoiled baby.

Would be great to see the lakers crush the heat but i think pj will just let the team figure things out for themselves. He won't show his hand during the regular season so he doesn't mind if they lose.

Agreed about their fans, but honestly can't be all that worried about a fan base that's so bad, they have
PSAs to 'Fan up'.

Lebron is really good. Too bad he will only play in LA twice this year. Good luck against the Clippers. Maybe you can come visit in June, the beach is really nice, don't forget your floaties!

As fans, we would really love for the Lakers to get up for the Christmas game... but coach 11 rings is a disciplined coach that knows when to reign in and pace the team. If it was another coach coaching our lakers... he would have put all marbles on the line for a showdown with the overhyped heat.

LRob,

You can't squeeze juice from Shannon's squeegee. It's the best you can get from this Spartan. Now if Lakers wanted to go to the next level, they should hire Magic J. to train Shannon to be a facilitator. I wonder if Bynum learned something from the Cap, he never acknowledged him in any interviews.

Do you think Carter, Gortat and Pietrus could duplicate the points lost by the Suns in Turkoglu and Richardson? I think Suns was more interested on the expiring contract of Vinsanity, he'll follow his cousin, TMac as journeymen the next season.

So glad Lakers front office didn't trade Bynum
for bosh last season.
And Nick Young is a beast.

No need to worry Laker fans...We got this...

Hey Edwin,

You're right, Shannon is what he is...but his D can and will improve.

I thought Gortat was a good pick up for the Suns because Lopez was hurt. I didn't realize Lopez came back a few games ago. You're probably right the Suns are motivated by reducing payroll.

Hoho, miami EAT losing to Wizards 18 seconds to go by 4 pts.

Joe Smith tweeted : " not 2 much on t.v. in the hotel. My thumb is starting 2 hurt from flicking thru the LOL"

I replied back: "NOOOOOOO no more Laker finger injuries!!!"

He replied back: "LMAO. Naww I'm good."

WHEW!!! Disaster avoided.

Excuse you Ed G.

justa - you saved us!

The heat came through at Washington.. Wiz just couldn't buy a free throw... and they kept fouling the heat also... that is bad coaching.. Flip lost it for the team.

Whoaaa! the Miami ATE the lowly Wizards after leading 4 pts 18 seconds to go.

63 - you're welcome. Now y'all owe me though....

Heat are playing like they can't lose right now, making all the clutch plays...

Like I said, I'm not dismissing these guys until the Lakers prove otherwise a week from now.

LRob: I do agree also that the Suns pick up Gortat is huge for them. Now they have a shooter in Pietrus, someone that can spell Grant Hill at shooting guard in Vince(they can play together also at 2 and 3 interchangeably), and they have a banger in Marcin to spell Lopez... the suns actually becomes deeper with this trade I believe not to mention additional muscle and toughness inside, one that the Suns have lack since the Barkley days.

dice8up - Yes, the Suns are now deeper. When I first posted about Gortat I he would be starting cause Lopez was still injured...I didn't realize Lopez was back. Now the more I think about it....I don't know what Phoenix plan is. Why pick up Gortat if the plan is still to spread the floor with Frye? Anyway I do think in Phoenix system Vince & Pietrus is almost a trade off for Hedo/JRich.

I think the people that see this as a big win for Orlando are thinking about the Hedo and Gilbert from 2-3 seasons ago. JRich is a definite upgrade over Vince, but how does this help them beat Boston, the team that bounced them out last year?

Beach Boy: No one here is saying that your boy LeBron is NOT good. He is good. To deny it is just plain ignorance. The question you should be asking your boy is, Can he win it all? He actually vanished in the last sequences of that Miami-Wiz game.. It was Wade who took over in the dying seconds.

Again my reservation is, Can they win it all?

You got to take care of 2 other teams in your end of the hemisphere... magic and boston.. take care of those first before talking about June. You may not even last second round with the way the Bulls is playing.

Go Lakers! Go Kobe!

LRob: That is a big question for Orlando... in the scheme of things.. the upgrade was not big as to get over the BIG hump that is Boston. I still believe that Boston is going to come out of the East.

Yes. What Orlando is looking at is the chemistry that Hedu brought to the team circa 2009 when we had them for the championships. Their biggest upgrade I believe is in the guard positions with Arenas/JRich.

Alvin Gentry though a D'antoni assistant... might have a different philosophy. Integrating agile big men with bigs that can shoot from the three...

@dice8up - agree with your thoughts on Orlando. But I don't think they're getting the 2009 Hedo. That was just a special year for him.

Although I applaud Dan for nipping the bickering that happened here in the last week or so... I am not sure it is a good idea to ban posters that were clearly not pro Lakers... they make for a more interesting blog, me thought. I miss them already.

LRob:Well it remains to be seen if they got the 2009 Hedu or not. He is still young and will certainly flourish under StanV system with DHoward commanding double team every time in the paint.

Yeah, so? What's your point? It's a meaningless early season practice game against this year's version of the LeBrons. What happened last year when the Lakers didn't feel like playing on Xmas? I don't mind the LeBrons getting a false sense of security. A for your prediction, go ahead and put me on that bandwagon. Anyone who knows anything about the Lakers knows that this game means nothing in the long run. zzzzzzzzzzz

I think the Magic just blew any chances of winning the Eastern Conference unless they have another deal up their sleeve. The rap on them was that they had no one who could create, so they went out and got 3 guys who can. The problem is that one of those guys had one great year and won't duplicate it even if he is back in familiar territory (Turkoglu), another guy is injury prone and simply not the player he once was (Arenas), and the third guy is a chemistry killer, although I admit that he does better in this type of system (J-Rich). Without Gortat, Dwight Howard is now left out on an island and Brandon Bass just ain't that great. Moreover, you don't making major chemistry changing shakeups in the middle of the season and win a championship. Sure, the Celtics put a new team together in '08, but they had the entire season to build on and it took them 2 rounds in the playoffs to get comfortable with each other. The Heat are bound to experience something similar. The 2006 Heat did it in their second season together when the Big Traitor was still dominant, but again they made some major moves to fill in the pieces BEFORE the season started.

I think the Wizards and Suns just made themselves better. John Wall needed to be freed of Arenas and they added a nice piece without really losing anything. Gortat is a marked improvement over Robin Lopez, and Pietrus can fill J-Rich's role just fine.

In my opinion, Otis Smith probably should have done something much smaller, but he likes to deal. I must respect him for that.

I saw a closeup pic of Kobe's hand recently and it was hard to believe that it wasn't doctored, I'm still not sure. It's just so trashed and arthritic. Still, he's always been able to play injured and I wouldn't put it past him to light up the Bucks tomorrow, just to show everyone that he still can.
**
Re: the trade, I've got appreciation for a team that's currently #4 in the standings in the east (recent road losses notwithstanding) and still pulls the trigger on that combination of deals. That's going all in, in a serious way. They'll bring in somebody to back Dwight I'm sure... Earl Clark's got some promise but he's not ready for real minutes. Orlando will actually pay less salary THIS year with the new players, they've shed the #2 salary in the league (Rashard). Richardson's an expiring contract so they get to look at him over the course of the season and evaluate. On the other hand Hedo's salary escalates every year.. and then there's Arenas. This deal was not for the faint-hearted.

I know Pete Maravich. I watched Pete Maravich. I have the game on tape when he dropped 68pts on Clyde Frazier. And young man you're no Pete Maravich.

dave m - the game tomorrow is in Toronto against the Raptors. Just sayin... LOL! But agreed on Kobe's hand. He'll do what he always does though - suit up and play, all the while kicking butt and taking names. It is worrisome though. How much more abuse can that hand take? I hope he (and we) never find out.

Don't forget all - early start tomorrow - 10 am pacific.

LRob

Thanks for the snippet at 08:48 PM. Haven't seen it in years, but I use it all the time! Mr. Quayle had the opportunity for a little levity, but instead he chose to get pissy.

This talk of Orlando and Miami is just a waste of time. Neither team will get past the Celtics. We are looking at a finals rematch, hopefully with both teams at full strength.

Sad News today: Musician and artist Don Van Vliet, who performed a complex brand of experimental rock under the name Captain Beefheart, died Friday, 17.December implicated to Multiple Sclerosis. He was 69. He had an immense influence on Lowell George & Little Feat back in the late 60s and early 70s.

RIP Captain Beefheart ....

LRob - hahahahaha! Pete was simply... Pete.

I am worried about The Hand. Not that he won't play... pain means nothing to him. But his handles have been off since The Hand began deteriorating, and his shot is a little less than it was at the moment (FT's) -- but if that's the hand or not, I can't ever say, for I'm not there. Still: no more!

Save The Hand!

888 - dude, Zoot Horn Rollo and Drumbo wanna know where you've been? They've been puttin' up Beefheart since yesterday!

63

I know. I didn't realize it was to commemorate his passing. I thought it might be a coincidence. I should have figured that out. Duh. My bad for not reading everything.

Joe Smith is gonna make an impact, even though stats will not tell the tale. He is a system player, and Phil loves big men like this (see Wennington, Bill and Longley Luc), with nice mid-range games and "banging" ability. This will also allow the Lakers to send Caracter to the D-League to get some extra practice. In regards to the Magic, I really think that they have improved. Gilbert Arenas is a gamble, yes, but Vince Carter looks absolutely dreadful at this point in his career. Hedo Turkoglu played his best basketball as a member of the Magic, and Jason Richardson is made to play in that system. As far as a back-up center goes, that is probably the most overrated position in basketball. They were paying Gortat almost starter money for playing around 10 mins a night. They could trade Duhon for a solid back-up, and keep Jason Williams.

888 - just yankin' your Neon Meate Dream of a Octafish.

The Clippers beat the Bulls in Chi-town?

Well I'm speechless.

guys, derek caracter tweeted me his number and said to text him cause he's in canada lol.

i think he needs a clue on geography.. vancouver is no where near toronto
regardless i thought it was so cool LOLOL

Diandra

Yeesh. Now you know why Phil doesn't trust him quite yet. :) Very cool though.

Anyway, I am interested to see how things are going to be with the suns, screw the magic. It was a bad trade on their end, imo. But will this trade make us see the suns in the final once again?

I am so not down with the lakers being on a road trip out east. Seriously, the lakers are having way too early of games and it's messing with my schedule. Don't remember the last game I fully watched :(

can't wait till christmas day!!!!!!!!!!

Kobe is a champ. My mom had finger surgery and it took 3 months to heal, and a lot of stuff with it. Kobe could have done it over the summer had it not been for knee surgery :(

Justanother... yes, I did type Bucks... and now that you mention it, I probably typed it elsewhere as well, haha. Ohhh, well. The mind loses sharpness.

LRob,

About backing up Shannon Brown, I agree. Look back at the draft he was picked with the pick before the Lakers pick, so the Lakers took Jordan Farmar. I think it's obvious who they really wanted. The trade of Radmanovic or whoever for Morrison and Brown was to get Brown. As I said, did Kupchak ever do anything to help the team with Morrison??? NO, he was unable to unload him, and he could not play decent enough to be in uniform regularly. So Kupchak, like West is not perfect. They should have traded him for one or 2 second round picks last year.

Gortat owes the Lakers some money, it's only because of that finals series that he got a good contract, and then what's he now, a throw in on a real deal.

He's probably in Vancouver, Washington....hey, it's right over the border, one the border of Oregon-Washington, the other USA -Canada.....both are not worth much IMHO.

Goood Morning Lakerland! I'm excited that our Lakers are getting back to full strength (other than Kobe). With Bynum back and Joe Smith joining us, I look for a big surge in play at some point in January. Talent, depth, and purpose. DANGEROUS combination.

So the Heat are looking impressive and their fan-trolls are acting up? I'll give them their due. They do look good and their run has been impressive as of late. But it doesn't hide that they aren't built for a 7 game series. We have seen great regular season runs before and most people use that as a prediction for the playoffs. WRONG. Our boys have played so many games the last 3 years, it's sick. It's simply smart to pace ourselves and pick our battles until the games really matter.

I miss Mamba24. But in his absence I appreciate 63 and LRob for their mixture of great basketball and MUSIC. Great diversion when the trolls are sniping and we are eating our own. Thanks guys! (I am assuming you are guys...LOL).

We're taking bets folks. Who says Bynum will get injured:

In January?

In February?

In March?

The winning bettor gets a free vacation in Boston at the Four Seasons in Boston. All expenses paid for 3 glorious nights in June following the Celtics victory parade down Commonwealth Avenue.

You can't be serious?

I think it's just as likely that he'll stumble out of the shower and break a toe or something before the New Year.

Will that disqualify me from the contest, and can I cash my winning ticket in for someplace else?

There's likely to be a big parade in Miami around that time.

What do the Magic, Celts, Spurs, Mavs, Lakers, and perhaps a couple of others all have in common?

Answer: They are all playing for runner-up!

I realize the Heat have only won 12 in a row, and are only 21 and 8, and they just now are starting to feel each other...

but, let's be serious for a moment.

Has anyone noticed how the Cavs are doing this year?
And how did they do last year?
And so what has changed about their team?

Anyone who thinks the Heat aren't clearly the team to beat...

well............OK.

888-tell those's season ticket holders how the Lakers really feel.

Season ticket holders? LOL, the Laker season ticket holders buy season tickets to sell the regular season to the regular joes and make a buck. Its a known fact, don't you know?

They have them so they have first dibs for the playoffs.

Seely_Iggy asked on an earlier thread about MM's return. Lakerholics, you just have to make it through one more day without him. He makes his return tomorrow!

Unfortunately, our bench doesn't run nearly as deep as the Lakers' bench, so when my vacation overlapped Mark's, we were down to Brez and Brad filing daily reports from practices and games. Indeed, we were missing the analysis and web meanderings to which you've grown accustomed.

Luckily for you, we've banned Mark from leaving again until the Lakers' season comes to a conclusion. Hah! I'm kidding. We might give him a day off here or there.

Exactly. My Heat tickets paid for 5 playoff games.

Who gives a care? Josh Childress has been playing the entire season with a broken right index finger. A sprained pinky is nothing.
