Kobe Bryant at the top of The Sporting News' list of top 50 NBA players

The Sporting News ranked Lakers guard Kobe Bryant first on its list of the top 50 NBA players, a revelation that's not necessarily eye-opening but interesting because the results are based on the a panel of 76 current and former players, coaches and general managers.

"Every year, we look for ways that he has lost a step and you look for ways that younger guys like LeBron or Kevin Durant have caught up to him -- and maybe in the middle of January, you can find some of those," a Western Conference scout told The Sporting News. "But Kobe is always going to make a smart play, he is always going to find a way to get a good shot, no matter what stage of the game or how deep in the playoffs, and I don't think the younger guys in the league are there yet."

Perhaps a dose of perspective regarding Bryant, who's been shooting 42.1% in the last five games ...

FIRST!!!

CowTown - WTH?? You haven't been around for a very long time, and now you show up and take my powers from me?? AWWW HELLLLL NOOOO SON - it's on now.

:)

I'm glad Kobe's getting some well-deserved props. All they really needed to do was ask us, but whatever. Better late than never. That said, it's about time these fools recognize!

LOVE YOU BLACK MAMBA!! Just get healthy. That's all we want.

Lol, I may have overstepped my role on the Lakers blog team here. MM, can you erase my "FIRST!!!" post? Although, I gotta say it was thrilling to get a chance to taste the powers however short lived they were.

I love the Kobe haters... they make me smile. Not a clue among them.

Does he make mistakes: sure. Who doesn't? But this whole lack-of-team-play, too many shots stuff.... Have you looked at the rest of the team's performance lately? Ron can't hit even if he's wide open (though Kobe is religiously going to him). Pau's tuckered out something fierce. (I love Pau's play, but he's a PROFESSIONAL athlete - he should be in Kobe or Fish shape ALL THE TIME - that means he's got to have wind. Tired out is not a phrase one should hear unless he's playing 48+ minutes a game... like Wilt did for a WHOLE SEASON). Heck, he's not even demanding a double team from the opposing D these days. Shannon's improving, but his shot's been off and on the last couple games, so that dagger's gone.

I'd rather have Kobe shooting at a time like this. And besides, he's been doing plenty of passing... all the way up to the point when his teammates keep missing the open looks.

Oh, and justa - last rabbit I ate was at a Moroccan restaurant, ground, in some pastry with powdered sugar on top. Yum! But I don't think my son would like me doing that to Pine Cone and Marshmallow.

For sure, so if noone, posters/MM is saying that Kobe is tired and needs rest and its a priority. Then they shouldn't use that as an excuse for Pau either.
I mean, doesn't Kobe have more minutes logged in for his career than Pau?

Tom Daniels - I swear it was rabbit, and the restaurant was in Hollywood (I think it was Moun of Tunis or Dar Maghreb). No doubt using pigeons would have turned off the SoCals as they are winged rats. It was good though.

In my defense, B'stilla, though as you pointed, is usually made with pigeon/squab, it can be made with lamb or rabbit: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-bstilla.htm

justa - could have been worse; it could have been made with kittens.

Fabulous control yourself you are beginning to scare me. Sweet little Pinecone & Marshmallow safe for now but roasted rabbit dish later. MY LORD!!! THE HORROR!!

Magia32 - I think you missed the point of my post.

No one is more culpable than anyone else. Kobe has sucked. Pau has sucked. Blake has sucked. Shannon has sucked. Barnes has sucked. Artest has sucked. Fisher has sucked. Phil Jackson has sucked. The training staff has sucked. The sweat mopping floor dudes have sucked.

About the only player who has been consistent - in the irony of ALL ironies - is Lamar. Go figure. But even he's not free from criticism.

When you lose, you lose as a team. Everyone gets the blame.
When you win, you win as a team. Everyone shares the credit.

People saying Gasol is the team's MVP is ignorance, but people knocking Gasol for playing is foolishness.

Whether he's playing 30 seconds or 3 minutes more than last year, it's still more playing time than what Bynum has logged this year. That boy has logged ZERO playing time. Zilch!

Gasol might be playing like a bunny, but it's still better than the sleeping pussy cat named Bynum who's yet to log a single minute this year.

And for those of you foolish enough to say we're not a championship team with Gasol at center, last I checked the Lakers won the 2009 championship with that same man at center, and that same man finished the job Bynum was too hurt (surprise surprise) to finish last year. Don't forget that for one second.

puddle - it's a shame most don't agree with the one-for-all & all-for-the-team approach. I think the NBA's actually been going further and further away from it over the years in their hype and approach (the Heat being the most recent case in point).

Still, I think there are ratios of responsibility involved, with Phil and Kobe being at the top of the heap simply by their track records. Then it goes to Pau, etc., etc. Kobe understands this. If we win, he's probably got a lock on the Finals MVP (earned or shared). If we lose, he's going to get the blame. It comes with the territory.

But I agree with you that lately everyone's been pretty out-of-kilter. EXCEPT, I have to disagree on the sweat mopping floor dudes, who have shown nothing but hustle, energy and the will to always close on the three point shooter no matter what.

Puddle,

I gotcha.

When basketball people (players, GMs, coaches) vote, Kobe seems to always come out on top (all NBA team, First Team Defense, etc).

When the media votes, Kobe rarely comes out on top (MVP).

Who you gonna trust?

How many MVPs would Kobe have if BASKETBALL PEOPLE voted for the award?

"Jackson agreed with the argument that the Rockets' championships were tainted because Michael Jordan was out of the league for the first of their title seasons and much of the next. "Definitely," Jackson said. "Without a doubt. Clearly, if the Bulls were whole, we would have won. It's pretty much registered by now. When Michael played, we won the championship."

REPOST:

Kobe missed three more layups last night. This Super Sux.

BTW, MM, if you would agree with me that Kobe missing Bunnies is anomalous and not really indicative of any other systemic problem, then 10-24 shouldn't really be characterized as "only" 10-24, or that he was unnecessarily jacking up shots. He hits just those three layups, and he's 13-24. The Lakers might still have lost, but your article would be saying, "...wasted an efficient offensive night by Kobe..." or something similar.

MM, you have to be fair and point out that Kobe is getting to the rim. He's breaking down opponents' defenses. He's dishing the rock. The problem is that team-wide, shots are not falling. That means, his (and everyone else) shooting % are falling, and everyone's assists numbers are falling as well.

Just because you miss a shot doesn't make the shot irresponsible. Just because you make a shot doesn't make it a good shot. Kobe is playing the style which his critics have always bemoaned him not playing enough of.

His shot just isn't falling.

Every team goes through this, though. Sometimes for extended periods of time. Offense comes and goes. Kobe is right that if they had righted their defensive ship, they could be riding out this storm while still piling up victories.

You can't depend of offense, but you should be able to depend on your defense.

One thing that people have appeared to be overlooking, is that Kobe stops playing defense in the fourth quarters for about a week now. I'm telling you his knee isn't holding up for the full 48 minutes. He's trying desperately to choose his spots, but he hasn't found that balance, yet.

Still, his late game shots are hitting the front of the rim. Even those that go in, are either grazing the front of the rim, or hitting it and tumbling in anyway.

Give him another 2 weeks or so, and we'll get the REAL Kobe back. Mark my words.

The Dodgers became AWFUL after the All Star break, the Kings were superb in the beginning and became AWFUL after 15 games or so, the Clippers is always AWFUL, and now the Lakers is so AWFUL to watch that they should change their name to LAPPERS. No good reason to live in LA except the weather. UGHHH!

FEARless - good insights. I've been wondering about Kobe's knee in the 4th as well. As well as Pau's bags under his eyes from the first game of the season.

Kobe will come through as usual. Pau? I'm thinking it's either mono, or girlfriend troubles (or he caught mono from his girlfriend... which led to the troubles; ie, who'd she get the mono from?). I mean, he's acting like a guy who's going through a breakup, or the weeks right before a breakup.

Anyway, that's my wild conspiracy theory for the day.

i want a game when Kobe will take all the shots. will he miss? of course, but if he gets in on of those "kobe zone" games, it will be the most entertaining event ever seen.

personally, because of his foot work and all his move to and around the basket i consider him a great performance artist, or a performer that goes beyond basketball. his arsenal of plays, or should i say palette is unlimited. there is always a "new" play or move that i never seen before. the NBA, where Kobe happens.

As I've said many times before:

Kobe's body of work trumps any mid-season skid, momentary lapse of on-court reason, poor playoff game performance, occasional unnecessary outburst, or sporadic error in judgment.

He has been judged by us, judged by his peers, judged by his predecessors, judged by his coaches (Del!), and so on.

However polarizing he may be, the results are still the same. Even the haters (albeit the hating basketball purists, not the uneducated fan) can attest to his greatness.

You know you're great when your enemies can admit you are the best. Magic and Bird displayed that humility, yet both were great in their own right. Too bad Kobe's antithesis was his own teammate in Snaq. Yet, Snaq finally bowed down, as nearly the entire league has.

I have one message for the haters...

See you at the parade. Kobe will be the guy riding on top of the bus again. Haters beware!

DBDH!

Jon K. - yeah, I've been following that for the last couple of days, and I just don't see Stern doing anything of importance about it. Now, in my wildest fantasies (and not the one with the bunnies in it), I would love to have this be an Army-McCarthy thing with a Roy Cohn on the Cav's side just taking Stern apart until he must resign or be replaced.

Still, Gilbert's got the deep pockets, and that's what it's going to take to ruin the Cerberus of Stern/Lebron/Riley.

If the Lakers try to save a few bucks by not signing a center now, it might cost them 18 million(Gasol) and/or 15 million (Bynum) this season.

Angry...Yes! But kind of catchy too!

All of the Pau criticism is a little unfair. He's playing the most demanding position and he's logging the most minutes on the team by far. He shouldn't be in this position at this time in the season.

Ron is usually facing the toughest scorer and he gets tons of rest, Fisher is usually guarding the point guard and he gets tons of rest, Kobe is usually guarding a weak player and able to take plays off and still gets tons of rest, yet Pau is stuck in the middle getting banged around and has to stay out there 40 minutes a game.

@63
I know- I kid, I kid!

I'm all for Kobe dominating the ball as well- as long as he passes to the open man when he's doubled.

mclyne - seriously, it was a horrible moment when I flipped on that video and my whole musical life passed before my ears. Tears of pain leaked from my eyes. I had to go wash myself in the soothing sounds of Al Green to feel clean again.

I think a lot of people fail to notice something I saw a lot of the last two nights: when Kobe got doubled and tripled, a lot of the other players come the second half of the game just stood around instead of coming to the ball, or cutting away from their man and getting the open passing lane. Passing on the double team doesn't work when no one else does their part. I saw it time and time again: flatfooted guys watching Kobe get doubled.

@Fearless - Kobe has missed a fair number of bunnies but there's lots of shots he's unnecessarily taken that's gone against the context of the offense. Kobe is a complete player and should play it as such. His isos are warranted when he's on a shooting streak. When it goes off, find something else that works. I think it's been pretty fair.

@ouchh - I think I've been pretty fair to Kobe, contrary to what you might say...

Kobe Bryant at the top of The Sporting News' list of top 50 NBA players

63 Footer,

That dish is usually made with pigeon, not bunny.

What's the over/under on fans throwing things on the court during the Cavs/Hype game today?
-
I'm thinking it's 85% likely.
-
I heard on the radio today that they are predicting it will be the most watched regular season game of all time.
-
I am eager to see LeCreep freak out.
-
What do we play for? RINGS!!!
-
Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.
-
GO LAKERS!!!!

Ever wonder about all the free stuff you see on the web? It appears like everybody wants to give stuff away for nothing, nada, zilch. But are these items truly free of charge? If so, how can these companies afford to give away all of these coupons and samples? It’s truly all about you, the consumer. We live in a very competitive world marketplace place. The internet has upped the ante in terms of who could be seen and heard via all with the mass media. Now companies need to make lots of noise and this is one way that can do it. One of the best place on the web is called "123 Get Samples" and get your free stuffs

I think all laker fans will enjoy this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8CfhCmW_ZA
