Kobe Bryant speaks again ... sort of

Fabforum

Kobe Bryant didn't have a very fun afternoon on Christmas, his anger at a lopsided loss to Miami rolling over into a post-game sermon in which he demanded more fire from his Lakers teammates.

He was more subdued Tuesday, offering clipped phrases when asked what he hoped to see a few hours later against San Antonio.

"Just some more effort," he said.

On offense or defense?

"Everything."

Did he specifically talk with any teammates at Monday's practice?

"Nope."

Did they understand what needed to be done?

"They will."

Bryant eventually opened up as reporters began asking if the Lakers (21-9) could turn it around against the Spurs, who are an NBA-best 26-4.

The Lakers' coaching staff has been pointing toward this game for almost a week, even more so than the Miami game because the Spurs are a Western Conference opponent.

Bryant wanted to see more direction from his teammates.

"We haven't been really pointing at anything. That's been one of the problems," he said. "We don't really get too excited about anything any more. I'm excited about this game. I'm excited about the challenge of it. Hopefully the rest of the guys are too."

Bryant said the Lakers' recent malaise since an 8-0 start reminded him of the 2001-02 season, when the Lakers encountered some regular-season losing streaks on the way to eventually winning their third consecutive championship.

"We had to deal with it when we won a three-peat here last time," he said. "Same type of situation that you deal with."

That championship team went through a 3-6 skid in January 2002 and a three-game losing streak a month later but never lost four consecutive games, which the Lakers did four weeks ago.

Hey guys, I just got out of General Hospital where I have spent the last two and a half days trying to get word of the condition of a family member who was assaulted by gang members. I won't be on the blog for a while as his condition is serious. He's not a gangmember and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Please please keep him in your prayers. I'll be back as soon as I can. Thanks Posted by: Cap's Goggles (83-79) | December 27, 2010 at 11:41 PM

Back on topic...

I have hit the proverbial panic button. Yep. No shame in my game. Sorry folks, but the lethargy & mediocrity is killing me. The "I ain't gotta turn it on till April" mentality is for the birds. We've been caught slipping by both elite teams and teams who don't have a prayer of even sniffing the daggone playoffs!

If the Lakers keep this up, WE WILL get caught slipping in June. Or May.

WE ARE THE 2 TIME DEFENDING CHAMPIONS! IT'S ABOUT GOSH DARN TIME WE PLAY LIKE IT!!!!!

AMEN!!!!
THANK YOU CHAPLAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

i haven't wrote or read any posts after the game . i wanted to get my head and heart clear. i saw a couple of other games with teams like the mavs and the celtics (yes, i'm calling them the celtics), who are looking great. every year, every team starts at the bottom of that mountain again. i think that besides some technical things, they have lost the eye on the prize. ron-ron's ring is now longer a distraction, he now no longer has one and will need to remotivate himself to get another. i hope that he is not some one shot wonder.pau looks soft and does not move like he has been ( i always watch his feet and it is different movements now). the deal is the lakers are not only at this point, not the best team in the nba, they are no longer the best team in LA !! blake is a beast and the clippers are beating teams like the suns.i'm glad the lakers have a pulse in practice, but when my mother, who lives in tampa tells me that the lakers "stunk up the place" what can i say?

UTZ,

If the Lakers lose tonight, I'll help you with this.

@Caps Goggles – Your family member is in my prayers.

@Utz – Amen!

@Elcid94 – Congrats on your RCOTD. Well said.

@Tom Daniels – I agree its very tough to get to four straight finals. Most of us still believe this team has it in them…but it’ll be a lot tougher than we imagined at the beginning of the season.

@fever – Hmmm…let’s see if I can connect the dots to the players from the clues you gave. Nah, its just to tough :-)

You know that's about the sickest ISH I've ever seen!!!!!!!!!!

@63 Footer – The house is packed. The fans are screaming. We’re just waiting to hear what the band plays…

@Mamba – Can't go wrong with Journey...cause we can't stop believing.

@mclyne – good call on Verve. I still can’t believe Duncan hit that double clutch 20 footer.

@Art – Nice to have Dwight pay us a visit….as long as he’s not being that Sling Blade character. Did you say vain? Well since Dwight covered this one also...now is not the time to catch the "Train in Vain" either.

Correction***

Teach & Preach LRob, Teach & Preach my brother!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Laker Nation,

That Christmas game really took a lot out of me. I was on the verge of letting this all go until the playoffs, but the problem with that is when you are a fan of this Lakers team for over 24 years, through good and bad, you expect better from a team that has the capabilities of being great.

I understand that this is a veteran team, but this is also the NBA. I don't go to my job and give a half-ass effort and so shouldn't professional basketball players who make the kind of money we all wish we could make being teachers or public service workers. But I also understand that professional basketball players are not perfect and they do have off-nights. But I can't understand the logic of the entire roster having an off night. When you have a team this talented, those who are having a good night should pick up the slack for those having an off-night. It just seems to me that when one person or two are having a bad game, the rest of the team seems to feel okay to slack off their game, and that is what frustuates me.

I am hoping that this team can get their act together sometime soon. I don't like the idea of waiting till April to pick it up. I, myself am a basketball coach and one thing I preach to my teams is to give it their 100% effort throughout the game, practices and when they are in school. I think professional athletes should already know this and should practice this on their own.

after 3 straight trips to the nba finals, the last two as a nba champs, i think the lakers are entitled to go through their "peaks and valleys" as they attempt another 3peat. although i don't quite get their christmas, malaise performances of the last two years, we Laker's fans must hang in there and not panic!!!!! would we've like to see them clobber the heat a few days ago? absolutely! the season has a long way to go. right now they're in a funk, plus they're trying to incorporate a rusty, out-of-shape bynum back into a lineup. not that these next two games aren't important, but maybe we'll see the "REAL" L.A. Lakers show up in san antonio and in new orleans. Let's go Lakers, close out the year in fine fashion!

GL Caps googles

If the Lakes win tonight, esp if they win big, it will take a lot of the sting out of XMas. (I for one would OK with not playing on XMas anymore. )

THERE BELIEF IS, THEY ARE SO GREAT THAT THE SUN REVOLVE AROUND THEM. A GOOD WAY FOR FAILURE,LOOK AT MOST TEAMS WHO HEADS SWELL UP. OR MAYBE THEY HAVE COME TO THE END OF THE ROAD, TIME AND OLD AGE MAY HAVE CAUGHT UP WITH OUR TEAM. MAYBE IT'S JUST A STREAK OF BAD PLAY. BUT SOON WE WILL FIND OUT, IT'S ONLY NATURAL THAT OTHER TEAMS GET BETTER. WE ARE STILL SLOW IN THE BACK COURT OUR SMALL FORWARD IS PLAYING TERRIBLY. HE SHOOT'S LIKE A BEGINNER AND OUR CENTER IS WEAK AS STRAW. ENOUGH SAID WE NEED ANDREW TO PICK US UP. IF NOT THEN WAIT TO NEXT YEAR.

keep in mind that any critical words are truely stated from love in hopes to see the needed changes for getting that ring. i do not believe that it is useful to simply say the lakers are great, there are a number of teams that "work real hard ALL of the time", who now see this as an opportunity to get perhaps their only ring . so tonites game is truely a "statement" game, the question now is what kind of a statement they are going to make. even a loss ,but with energy, the ball moving, people making their shots. if kobe get 6 or 7 assists, the lakers should win

Cap's Goggles: Take care in your time of pain. I pray that everything goes well with your family and he can make a full recovery. Still haven't fully read through yesterdays/this mornings posts but I just want to say that the conversation yesterday was amongst the best that I can remember having on the blog. Great exchange of ideas and thoughts, everyone seemed to be at the top of their games. It is days like these that make this blog so worthwhile, such a pleasure to be a part of.

Let's hope the Lakers start clicking as much as the blog has been.

- - -

Kobe doesn't need to vocalize things. He doesn't have to call a player's only meeting. The players will soak up everything through his attitude, body language, actually participating in practice.

This is a team that has given us 2 straight championships. I'm grateful for that, appreciative. They are a proven commodity. A repeat champion. With 30 teams in the league one could argue that on average a team would win 2 championships over the course of 60 years - however Laker fans are fortunate to have seen 10 titles in 30 years.

However we gotta keep it real, keep things in perspective.

A veteran team like the Lakers have earned time to work through issues - especially early season ones. Phil is great at keeping things in big-picture view, not resorting to knee-jerk reactions that other coaches make. He lets things work themselves out, players work through their issues - especially early-season issues.

No doubt this team is a proven team and deserve to be treated as one. However, I will be the first to admit (as I've tried to do) that there are certain troubling trends: Fisher's falling production and losing a step, Ron Ron's offensive struggles, Pau not bringing it every night, the drop-off in bench production over the past month or so. Even Kobe sometimes slips into the 1-on-5 player at times - not even Kobe is above criticism when merited.

Reality says Phil isn't going to start yanking starters, making changes - but by him asking the fans for patience it shows that he is concerned enough to have his antenna's up. These issues and lackluster play have got his attention.

I predict a win tonight, a righting of the ship - but if I'm wrong then how long before Phil starts pulling a Popovich and make changes to his coaching philosophies?

GO LAKERS!!!!!!

My prayers go out to you and your family member. Gang violence is so stpid especially if your own kind do the shooting. Senseless just senseless waste of life.
Hang in there bro.

Bring back Ebanks and get rid of Luke. Let him retire and become a coach.

hobbit: I just wanted to address your question to me about being biased towards Drew. My answer: yes. Of course I am. As I'm biased towards Kobe, towards L.O., towards Pau - everyone. Even towards Phil, the coaching staff, Mitch and the front office, Dr. Buss - everyone in the organization.

But specifically Bynum, I've been watching hoops for a long time, he has as nice and light a touch around the basket as any young center I can recall seeing. His unfortunate injury problems have provided setbacks. I look at him when he is clicking, when he's had a few months of continued play - there are no centers currently in the league that have his scoring ability. Look around, you'll see. No one around the league can score in the post as easily as Drew.

Furthermore, Drew is one of only very few 'true centers'. Deep-post centers. Something most teams around the league don't possess in this age of scrappy, undersized centers or those that shoot perimeter jumpers and don't venture much into the lane.

Mostly though, he just turned 23. He's already in his sixth season, and has all that playoff experience. He showed he can play though injury as he valiantly went out and caused the Boston bigs problems in the Finals, arguably as big a factor in the Lakers winning as anyone.

Injuries are the only thing, but the talent is there. Give this guy a few more years of seasoning - he'll just be entering his prime.

I've predicted it before, and will repeat it here - Andrew Bynum in his prime will be the finest center in the league. Not spoken from the heart, as a Laker fan. Not spoken as a biased homer. Spoken as an NBA fan that watches (too much according to my wife =P ) hoops and enjoys the game - and is able to recognize that the Lakers have a diamond in the rough when it comes to Drew compared to centers around the league.

I've laid it out, right there. That's my thoughts on Drew. We're lucky to have such a great talent at center, that is young enough to improve and already has shown he can not only play with the big boys - he owns most of them right now. He's doing fine now, imagine him in a few years.

So yes, I am biased about Drew - as I am all our Lakers. But that doesn't keep me from 'keepin' it real'...

Poor Luke, he can never get a break from Laker fans...

(16) MARK G. -GL Caps googles

The problem with the Lakers is that the only shooting threat is Kobe Fish can only make free throws Artest has lost his touch Gasol can't handle pressure and Lamar is inconsistant and will only take easy shots ,so that leaves other teams to just concentrate on Kobe.Kobe has been told by Phil not to take over so that stops a lot of his aggression.Mark my words Phil is going to do his best to split this team up like he did the Bulls before he leaves he is already starting by calling Gasol the mvp and asking him to lead Kobes team.

I don't think Phil is self destructing his team

I think we will be alright,

this is a major glich, yes indeed

Prayers out to Cap's Goggles (83-79]

Heard it here first. When Dwight Howard is a free agent there will be a sign and trade for Drew.
