Five things to take away from Lakers' 121-96 victory over Portland Trail Blazers

Gasol2 1. Pau Gasol nets fourth career triple double

Perhaps for dramatic effect, the shot took a while before it eventually dropped into the basket. Gasol had just thrown a bounce pass to Ron Artest in the lane and it initially appeared the shot would fall short just like Kobe Bryant's short-range shot did a few players earlier after Gasol found him open. As soon as Artest's shot dropped in, Gasol raced back on defense, pumped his fist and high-fived guard Shannon Brown, the nearest teammate in sight.

Gasol had just recorded his fourth career triple double and second with the Lakers, and eventually finished with 20 points on nine-of-13 shooting with 14 rebounds and 10 assists. The accomplishment doesn't just mean the Lakers media guide will have to add another line to the details surrounding Gasol's career triple doubles, which includes games against Atlanta on Feb. 17, 2009, (12 points, 13 boards, 10 assists) as well as two with Memphis against Utah on Jan. 24, 2007, (17 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists) and against Seattle on March 8, 2006, (21 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists). It's just another example how Gasol has risen to Phil Jackson's challenge that he help carry this team offensively until Bryant fully recovers from his surgically repaired right knee and Andrew Bynum returns from rehabbing his.

The other examples: Gasol earned Western Conference player-of-the-week honors for the first week of the regular season. His 21 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in the Lakers' 114-106 victory on Oct. 29 at Phoenix marked the highest stat line among those categories for a Lakers center since Shaquille O'Neal dropped 22 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists in an 87-84 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Feb. 20, 2000. And his performance against Portland showcased everything that's defined his consistency ever since the Lakers acquired him in February of 2008 from Memphis in a trade. Gasol showcased his amazing footwork and touch when he posted up before turning for a hook shot. He demonstrated his work around the basket when he tipped in his missed underhanded layup. And he showed off his court vision when he threw a cross-court pass to Lamar Odom for a wide open dunk.

But Gasol's performance doesn't just reflect his consistency. It also reveals that Gasol has accepted and reveled in his responsibility to carry the team. In return, the team given him his due respect, most visibly when Lakers guard Steve Blake threw an off the backboard lob for a Gasol fast-break dunk.

2. Ron Artest shuts down Brandon Roy

The work Artest performed on Roy really depends on who you ask. Jackson argues Roy's eight points on one-of-six shooting spoke more about the team's help defense on Roy than anything Artest did. Artest proclaimed Roy's injured and self-censored himself multiple times in postgame interviews in fear that anything he'd say would feed a trash-talking storyline. And Artest's teammates, ranging from Bryant to Gasol to Odom pointed to Artest himself as the one who deserves the accolades.

What remains most impressive about Artest's work on Roy doesn't just entail Roy's shooting mark. It points to the fact that Artest relentlessly shadowed him, slowed down his efficient movement and frustrated him enough that Artest allowed so few shot attempts. Roy's lone field goal came with 5:22 left in the third quarter and actually happened when Artest and Odom switched assignments on a rotation. Beforehand, Artest forced Roy to miss his first five shots. Roy's struggles surely contrasted his four previous matchups with the Lakers when his 17-point average last season contributed to Portland's four successful meetings in which he played.

The performance also sparked a defense that appeared stagnant against Toronto, but appeared energetic against the Trail Blazers. The Lakers outrebounded Portland, 49-25 while holding the Blazers to 36.1% first-half shooting and only eight fast-break points.

Lamar1 3. Lamar Odom shakes off bad game

Chalk Odom's off night against Toronto to logging many of his nearly 36 minutes at full speed, kept his same intensity he displayed with Team USA in the 2010 FIBA World Championships and that off nights happen. Odom proved in his performance against Portland that he won't be prone to inconsistent swings, a reputation that has carried with him for most of his 11-year career. His 21 points and 12 rebounds represented vintage LO, including coast-to-coast drives, elbow jumpers and his willingness to get on the ground via the baseline to fight for a rebound that eventually went out of bounds.

The only true indicator to measure Odom's contribution entails the plus-minus stat, which was at +19, a mark that only fell short to Gasol's +27.

4. The Lakers absorbed a poor shooting night from Kobe Bryant

Bryant's shot looked far from impressive, as he went three of 11 for the field for 12 points. This isn't so much an analysis on how his knee is doing (it's still progressing) as it is that he can afford to have off nights when the Lakers are playing so well. While he still remained effective with his aggressive drives to the basket (he went six of seven from the free-throw stripe), facilitating the offense and spreading the floor, the Lakers' supporting cast along the frontline and off the bench proved it didn't matter.

Obviously, Bryant needs and wants to become the dominant player he has been, but it's comforting for the Lakers to know that they can lean on Brown lighting it up from the outside (15 points on six-of-12 shooting and three of six from downtown), Matt Barnes relentlessly cutting for open looks by the basket (13 points on six-of-seven shooting) and keep Bryant's minutes to a thrifty 24 as they did Sunday. That can help keep him fresh so that he is dominant when the Lakers truly need him.

Kobe1 5. The Lakers played well enough to get more rest

Bryant wasn't the only Laker to receive a significant amount of rest. Gasol's 33 minutes was a far drop from the 43 minutes he logged against Toronto. As was Odom's 34 minutes, a five-minute drop from the Raptors game. Meanwhile, Lakers forward Derrick Caracter played a season-high 16 minutes and 30 seconds and Sasha Vujacic made his fourth appearance of the season with five minutes and 34 seconds.

Though Jackson mentioned before the game the likelihood that Caracter and Devin Ebanks will play in the D-League once Bynum returns, the more minutes Caracter can get now, the better. This isn't just to help give him a chance to show his worth. The better Caracter plays, the more willingness Jackson will take in resting Gasol and Odom. Obviously much of that will hinge on how much of a lead the Lakers build, but Jackson has remained reluctant to rest them even during double-digit leads. Jackson also doesn't want to load this responsibility on Theo Ratliff (he played four minutes and 42 seconds), considering his sore left knee and slow mobility. It's not a stretch to say the more Caracter plays during blowouts, the better Odom and Gasol will be later in the season.

Stat of the Night: 26 - The number of rebounds Odom and Gasol grabbed, which eclipsed the Trail Blazers' total of 25.

Amazing game... but the real challenge begins right now...Gasol is playing at mvp of the league level, and kobe is getting better...and guys...Bynum is still out... wooooauuuuuuuuuuuuu! odom is playing great, just as the bench, just bryant´s or gasol´s injuries could stop this team!!! go lakers!!!

This year the bench is the best of last years, Lakers will have military parade all round the regular season. Miami Heat is perfect for marketing... but not for win the ring.

Kobe + Pau are the ring's machine.

Pau, now, is at his top level since he arrived to NBA.

¡¡ Salud !!

Nate McMillan after the game "Lamar Odom is an All Star"

Against Toronto, the Lakers gave up 49 rebounds & 58 pts in the paint.

Against Portland, the Lakers gave up 25 rebounds & 30 pts in the paint.

Did Bynum play last night? How else could the Lakers have shored up
their defense????????

You all know I am a Pau fan, but today I want to root for LO. He is a amazing player. LO is Magic Johnson 2.0. Actually Pau and LO are the best lakers players, Pau as MVPau and Lamar as the perfect Pau´s sidekick.

Finally you all, brothers, cant understand why I have said in every of my postings that Pau is "the guy", is "THE MAN" in his team, and he is since 2008.

Congrats from Barcelona.

The bench should be called "The Deadly Viper Assassin Squad"

@MM - excellent recap. I agree with Ron Ron that Roy's poor outing was a team effort and a lack of aggressiveness on Brandon's part (only 6 shots). The Blazers played with low energy all night. I guess the back-to-back and 3rd in 4 nights took its toll on them.

Just like the Lakers, the Blazers will be much better when they get their big men back.

@hobbit - good one!

@Smushcalade - I agree with Nate!

Good Morning Laker Fam,

Last night’s game was pretty easy and Pau was simply divine. Thus, morning selection is "Easy Living" from the Divine One…Sarah Vaughn

After winning the opening TIP, the Trailblazers were ambushed by a brilliant strategy lead by iRon Man who sent their floor general Roy Boy to their tent.
The Lakers offense counter-attacked on all fronts displaying the full arsenal of pyrotechnics. (No special effects necessary).Even the old broken Machine "Big Sasha" got re-tooled and re-oiled in the process.

Good Morning Ouchhhhhh! How are you this morning sir?

At what point does the East coast biased media (shoutout LakerTom) start saying this Lakers squad is AWESOME?

Seriously, for all of FCM's points above, for the comments made already this morning, for what PJ said in training camp. I am totally enjoying this.

Should an L happen upon this awesome team, I think it will be due to a truly off night for everyone. I have to expect an L but I sure hope it happens in a couple weeks and after the NOH have one.

I love the self and team motivation, I love the enthusiasm for the all-around game. I love Ron Ron SHUTTING down BRoy. I love LO and Pau BOOM. Ok - it's too early in the a.m. but have I said I love this team???

Cheers - PLG

Good Morning BLOG CRUE,
A great victory last night. Good to see Pau get some much needed rest. Later this week, Lake Show in _enver.

Colorado loves our World Champion Lakers!

Gooood Morning Lakerland! Nice to see our Mamba24 up early and on a roll. PLEASE add me to the Bandwagon! We definately "Got This".

Our team seems so good it's sick. Like I said before and will continue to say until it's proven otherwise. "This season is more like a Coronation." We will visit each NBA town to show them their next (and reigning) NBA Champions. It's actually an opportunity to mingle with the masses.

Morning all..

A spirited, inspired defensive and rebounding EFFORT
opens up so many options for creativity in the offense..

This is one talented, purposeful, and DEEP team --that is still improving.

A word about Luke.. as justa pointed out, when he's healthy, the Lakers are better. Enough with the ridicule and derision. Most of us humans perform better given encouragement and respect.

And it's time to line up for a swirly if you're in the camp that spent the last two years quacking about trading Fish and Lamar.

Good Morning Hugo Boss! How are you sir? So you enjoyed that lil display of Laker might last night huh? LOL! Yes sir the Thuggets are Thurday, a back to back after playing the Timberwolves Wednseday but Laker Nation knows Hugo Boss will represent!!

Mrs. DBDH stated last night that as long as the Lakers can stay healthy, there is nothing stopping them from achieving greatness in June once again. Even with Kobe having a pedestrian shooting performance, the team picked up the slack and "runaway freight train'd" the Blazers.

My only real complaint of the game was the Laker bench's inability to pass out of the full court press/trap. How many times did they j u s t get the ball over the time line? Too many! Phil needs to revisit the simple task of pushing the ball forward to break the trap and initiate the offense while the backcourt defense recovers. Maybe I'm just being picky... who knows?

Great game, either way. I'm also pleased with Matt Barnes' passing and cutting. It seems as though he is active on every play, judging by his physical activity as well as his stat lines.

Lamar Odom. All-Star. Nuff said.

Pau Gasol. Early season MVP candidate. Truth!

Shannon Brown. Most Improved Player. Just stop dribbling so much, bro!

Lakers Nation:

Does everyone remember before this season started when Dr. Jerry Buss boldly proclaimed that THIS could be The Best LAKERs Team ever assembled?

His comment barely elicited a shrug. Some even dismissed his statement as merely hyperbole.

What do y'all think now?

Games like last night are merely (pick your cliche):

The Tip of the Iceberg...

Just Scratching the Surface...

Of the frightening potential that THIS current 2010-11 Lakers team possesses when sufficiently motivated by a worthy opponent.

Be afraid, rest of the league, be verrrrrry afraid!

P & G R

The Deadly Viper Assassin Squad is a great name

what about

Bryants Barbarians anyone ever tried that before

!!!!! And we are the 3 Peat Posse !!!!

@m24:

OUT-FREAKIN'-STANDING, sir!

Many thanks to you.

And yes, she is treasured (Mrs. DBDH has been a tried and true Fisher fan since '96, BTW).

THE HEAT HAVE NO FIRE
Could you speak louder I failed to hear, Why the nothing Miami Heat the Lakers should Fear
If anything the Heat should be in fear of us, especially since their Ballon we are about to Bust
They built these fools up so big and bad, that when the Lakers cut them apart it will be sad
Chris Bosh, what the heck is that, One bump by Bynum and your skinny butt will go splatt.
Dwade he’s got a nice game it’s true, But playing with Princess Jimmy wil be the ruin of you.
As for Princess Jimmy what can I say, In any meaningful game the lil Biatch fades away
So what’s all this talk about Fear the Heat. This is one team I cannot wait to meet.
But maybe next season now we have other fish to Fry, I wanna see that Fake Paula cry.
I want the Celtics to be well and healthy, So no lame excuses will there be
We can Play Big, Small, Fast or Slow, Don’t make a bit of difference to the Lake Show
We can play the other teams style better than they, That’s why they all fear Freakin LA
This will be a season for the Ages, The things The Lakers can do just plainly amazes
So we know who we are and what we can do, Tell me Miami heat who the Hell are you

MM, you left off the bench play last night. There was no "watching the butterflies". Yes, there was a bit of trouble with full court pressure in the last 5 min, but they rebuilt everything they lost without Phil sending a starter to the scorer's table.

I loved the fact that once the ball got down inside the Lakers responded like they were being attracted to it. No easy layups and nothing unchallenged.

After watching the Lakers struggle against the Blazers for 5 or 6 years, last night was a good night to be a Laker fan. Oh yeah, we got this!

Be afraid, rest of the league, be verrrrrry afraid!

(01) JUSTANOTHERMAMBAFAN - OWNER - We Got This & We Want More! Nothing but a (17th) Title will suffice.
(02) utzworld – THE BANNER HOLDER – CHAPLAIN - On the line this season: Kobe's 6th ring. Kobe's 2nd 3Peat. Phil's final season. Phil's 4th 3Peat. A potential head to head defeat of Shaq should the Celtics make the Finals. The NBA record tying 17th Championship. Destiny is calling. MOVE, HATERS! GET OUT THE WAY!”

(28) JOHNNY V - PLEASE add me to the Bandwagon! We definately "Got This".
(29) PSYCHEDLAKERGIRL - Please add DBDH! to any and all previously posted bandwagons, welcome wagons, station wagons, party wagons, chuck wagons, patty wagons, power wagons, radio flyer wagons, or related wagon trains."PLG loves all those wagons as well - especially the party wagons.
(30) JOLLY RANCHER - Oh yeah, WE GOT THIS!!!

Good morning,

So much to like about this new squad of Lakers. A Kobe or a Lamar can have an off game, and the team is deep enough to pick up the slack. Taking the summer off has done wonders for Pau Gasol. Steve Blake is the Laker that Jordan Farmar was supposed to become, but never did. Like the beat, the list goes on and on!

Lakers basketball is better than ever.

My kinda game: dominating.

We picked up the D just fine... as we should. Pau having a monster game, LO back to being LO 2010.

Agree with all of DBDH's points (even the picky ones). Our second units always have trouble against the press. They just never practice against it I guess.

Most of all I love the fact that Kobe can sit back and slowly work his way back to perfection, which (knock on wood) should help him stay healthy. In the past, with a sucky bench, no one else to take the load, etc., he'd have forced himself to play more and harder... which wouldn't have helped his getting fully healthy, and could have made it all worse.

Good music this morning. I will add this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWVZ5kPV1Ts

MAN, that "I love LA" video/song by Brian McKnight is awesome. The Laker sound bites in the background give me chills.

I am enjoying it being in our roll call and bandwagons.

Very well said. Too bad Jordan never realized what a great opportunity he had here!

@noah - Keb Mo rocks...South Central LA in the building.

@63 Footer - We're definitely on the winning side. Elfman has parlayed his Oingo Boingo success very well in the movie business.

@Mamba - Love that Leon Ware (representing the D). Wrote for Minnie, produced for Marvin and Maxwell. Could've been a bigger solo artist.

But anytime I see "What's Your Name" I'm expecting to hear Don & Juan classic...

WOW!!! Now that's what you call Freakin Singing!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!

Andrew WHO? Here comes Timberwolves!!!

I am glad Odom came back strong after a subpar game to make the last game as an exception. It was genius of PJ having the difficult matchup for the Portland last night (Artest vs Roy and Kobe vs Miller) Hopefully, the Lakers will blow away the Timberwolves (by half) and not make it to a dog fight like the Raptors game.

Rick F. - YAY!!! Welcome back friend.

P&GR - yes, unnoticed by everyone except us Lakerholics. Under the radar and we are thrilled.

Mamba - fire poem awesome. I am sure the Xmas day game buildup will be starting any day now.....

And to think we are only 7 games in and the bench still has to "acclimate" to the system...... oh the joy come next May when our defense really starts shutting guys down. Oh the joy!

Cheers - PLG

Guys, any time I read "What's Your Name" Lynyrd Skynyrd starts rotating in my head

One of the most enjoyable Laker games I have ever watched. Every phase of basketball was mastered. The point totals that are coming consistantly from Blake, Barnes, Brown and Odom are significantly different than last year ... Barnes also a super disruptive force on defense ... I know when things are going well, it's hard to see where they could go wrong, but right now all looks golden (and purple) ...

Ummmm...That was easy.

NEXT!

--FEARless

BTW, the Lakers would have to shoot 70% on two pointers to match their three-point shooting efficiency. Can they actually keep this up?

LA is looking great this year.

Perhaps a record setting season for the lakers this year. Pau and Lo are in top form but the championship still depends on Kobe.Lakers are indeed looking impressive...top to bottom. Excellent pickups in the off season makes this team capable of winning 4 or 5 in a row (counting the last 2). I won't be surprised if Kobe surpasses MJ in championships.GO Lakers! One more thing ...since I see everyone posting music...so will I..Kobe should listen to this before the game....it's called whatever sucka by me..The King. http://theking1.bandcamp.com/track/whatever-sucka if you prefer an instrumental check out I of The Tiger.

OH yes...don't want to forget Ron Ron......the all star stopper. Can't win it without him either. Lakers have brought me a lot of joy. Go Lakers!
