Las Vegas oddsmaker disagrees with public sentiment that Miami Heat will beat the Lakers in the NBA Finals

6a00d8341c506253ef0133ecd225cb970b-600wi

There's good news and there's some bad news regarding the Lakers' chances to three-peat.

Let's just start with the bad news, just so you can then feel inspired about the good news that lies ahead. Here's the bad news: Jay Rood, race and sports book director at MGM Mirage, told me Tuesday morning that the general public still favors the Miami Heat to beat the Lakers in the 2011 NBA Finals. The good news: Rood doesn't personally agree with that sentiment, and he remarks that the odds will likely change for better or for worse once the actual regular season begins Tuesday night, including a TNT doubleheader featuring the Heat against the Celtics (5 p.m. PDT) and the Lakers against the Rockets (7:30 p.m.)

The Heat this offseason were favored in Vegas to win the championship. Has that stayed the same?

Rood: It's definitely cooled off. They're still the favorite on the board. I believe we've got them at 7-to-5 right now, which is easily the shortest price of anyone entering the season in my recent memory. Usually at the beginning of the season, the shortest price that you'd find on the board in the NBA would be in the neighborhood of 3-to-1 Lakers maybe a year or two ago. Seven-to-5 is where the Heat are at right now. Lakers are 2-to-1, which is a ridiculous second choice. It is what it is. It's the power brokers of the NBA at this point, and it's pretty much prove us wrong that these two teams don't end up in the Finals. That price there indicates that if they do get into the Finals, that the Heat would be the favorite over the Lakers at this point, not forgoing how the season unrolls in front of us.

How does Miami have the edge over the Lakers at this point?

Rood: In my mind, they don't. But I don't book to what I think. I book to what the people bet. Early in the year when all of this was going down, if you had the Heat higher than 2-to-1, you were going to take money left and right. Pretty good-size money too. There were a lot of people showing up betting four- or five-figure amounts that the Heat would win. It just kept coming in, so we had to find the market price and keep lowering it so it slows down to where you can live with the liability.

What do you draw from this strong public sentiment toward Miami, considering it's rare for a two-time defending champion not to be the favorite?

Rood: It's an extremely rare position the Lakers are in right now. It's a spot where you can't get caught off guard because it would be easy to let the Lakers drift up to an area that's not in line with their capabilities with repeating once again. What you take away probably is what the commissioner [David Stern] said the other day. There probably needs to be maybe four less teams in the league and make it more exciting with higher-quality teams. Right now, the only two teams that anybody wants to know the odds on are the Lakers and the Heat, and occasionally the Thunder. At this point, they're dominating the board. I'm not drawing bets anywhere else. The only ones I drew bets to is when LeBron [James] was deciding where he was going to go to and people were making speculation bets in the market. They were betting New Jersey, New York, Chicago, Miami; they were all trying to cover the board in where he would end up. The day or two prior to the decision, it became pretty apparent that there was a strong opinion he was going to go the Heat because that was the team more people focused on.

But you had said the sentiment toward the Heat was stronger this summer compared with now. What's the reason for that?

Rood: It's cooled off a little bit from my perspective of wagering just because the price has gotten shorter on them. If we had Lakers at 2-to-1 and the Heat at 5-to-1, which is probably where I'd think personally it should fall, we would still be taking quite a bit of money with the Heat at that price. My opinion may change on that in the next week -- if they come out and really, really show they've got a team that is going to play well together and is going to get the job done. There's teams you talk about all offseason and how great they're going to be, what they're going to do and where they're going to end up. The Cowboys are a perfect example of that. Nobody knows, but that's why they play the game. It's a cliche, but it's a cliche for a reason. This is the nature of how it works. It goes through a cycle. It'll ramp up here again if they come out of the gate and go 12-0; everybody will start getting fever pitch about it again, and they'll see 7-to-5 on the board and think that's great value. And we might start taking more wagers on them again. If that's the case, I'd more than welcome it.

MM - great article!

Roll call ... checking in!!!

Tonight we get to enjoy and savor that which fans from 29 other NBA teams wish they could experience to start the 2010-11 NBA season. RING NIGHT. The quest for #17 to tie the Celtics. The quest for Philip's fourth three-peat and a brilliant season to send him riding into the sunset. The quest for Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher's second three-peat. The quest for Kobe to surpass all Laker greats with 6 rings and to do the unthinkable and catch Michael Jordan. And to think that the Miami Heat get all the attention. I have to laugh.

But second things first! Let's watch Yao Ming come to the quick realization that his ballclub cannot compete with the Lakers and remind him that he's had a long layoff. Let's watch Kevin Martin rush his shot. Let's watch Luis Scola take an LO elbow should Fish not be there to deck him. Let's watch the triangle run smoothly and our new players integrate seamlessly. Let's watch our defense be smothering.

The 2010-11 season is FINALLY upon us. May the fans show patience and most important, may the Lakers enjoy good HEALTH. For with good HEALTH, we will see ...

....#17 coming up STRONG!!!!

1-2-3 ... RING!!! Go Lakers!!

REPOST

GAME ON! SEASON ON!

Mini Banner Holderette is sick with a fever so I've been playing Doctor Daddy today - just got online.

LET US PRAY!

Dear Lord, we thank You for all of Your blessings. For life, health, strength & VICTORY, we give You praise!

We thank You for granting our Lakers another championship summer! They fought hard and emerged victorious over our arch enemy. We have cheered. We have celebrated. We have partied all summer long. And tonight, we will receive another coronation and BANNER RAISING which we will receive in honor and gladness! Thank You once again for carrying us to the mountaintop once again!

Having said all that, we know that today is a new day. A new season. A new journey up the mountaintop. A new set of adversaries to go along with the defeated one of June 2010. A new challenge. A new chart to course. A new set of 82 games. We pray, as always, that our Lakers play 82 complete games of intense, focused, disciplined and determined NBA basketball. May they chase every rebound. May they challenge every opposing shot with authority. May they remain united as a team. May their shots fall like rain. May their free throws effortlessly glide into the hoop. May Kobe/Pau/Ron/LO/Fish & Sasha continue to follow the game plan that led them to back to back championships and 3 in a row finals appearances. May Steve Blake, Matt Barnes, Theo Ratliff, Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter adapt smoothly and effortlessly into the framework of the Purple & Gold. May they stand united. May they submit to Phil & the coaches' authority. Lead them onward and upward to another season's full of victories.

Once again, may you heal our injured soldiers Andrew Bynum and Luke Walton - especially Andrew. Strenghten and heal his knee. Let him rise past the pain and the expectations and send him back in Your time...and may he work with Pau & LO to be a solid defensive wall that will overcome every drive into the paint and every lunge at the hoop!

We thank You for the new season. We thank You for the ring ceremony. We thank You for the unity on our LA Times Lakers Blog. Continue to use MM & Dan the Man to lead and guide our discussions. Let us continue to silence every troll and to stay hopeful despite all adversity.

And...as always...we thank You for answered prayer. Now LET'S RAISE UP THE SIXTEENTH BANNER AND GO AFTER #17 WITH ALL THE PASSION AND STRENGTH WITHIN US!!!

AMEN!

MM - no need to repeat, but it's opening night...

You are one bad Blog stud muffin...Thank you for moderating this season, so we can witness greatness together...

***

If they are really raffling Ron Ron's ring for $2 a ticket...I would like to buy 10 please...If I win...I will give it back to Ron Ron...he keeps his ring...and he helped his charity...

Of course he would have to give me at least 2 courtside seats for the playoffs...

LEWSTRS - sorry, man - the Hooters hostesses were accidentally delivered to my place. But don't worry, I'll double check they're jumping up and down and cheering for the Lakers.

Whoever wins Thriller's ring should give it back to him in exchange for a day at Magic Mountain with Ron.

GO LAKERS!!!

This is going to be the best season since 2001-2002 because of the bench.

These guys are rough, tough, and hopefully hungry!

It is a long season and a lot will happen between now and June. Hopefully we will see Andrew Bynum back to health and sustain a full season and playoffs of injury free play which is the key to the Lakers defense of their title. There is no team that matches up once he is in the lineup.

I wish the guys the best going into tonight and look forward to watching Kobe Bryant in his 15th glorious year here. We are all very fortunate to have this unbelievable talent at our disposal, generations will be talking about his feats.

G-d bless the Lakers!

@63 Footer...LMAO...I hate it when that happens...save one for me...I'm on my way over...Hope you like Teriyaki...

@LakerTom: I live down on the central coast, but we travel up to the Bay area often. And I'll certainly travel that direction for a good ol' fashioned California rivalry game (note: term "rivalry" used tongue-in-cheek). I gotta check my Lakers calendar... when do they play the Warriors up there?

Go Lake Show!

Wow...the 2time defending champs basically has there entire team back AND have added a few pieces and yet they're flying under the radar. Having followed team sports for the last 40yrs I can't ever remember that happening. Phil, Kobe, Fish & company are eating this up.

AMEN Utz!

Re Ron’s Ring

I started writing this, and it sort of took off. I then went back and edited it some since it was so long, but it ain’t perfect. I figured I’d rather stick it out there and have some people read it though.

I think this is great. Aside from the fact that the cause is something I feel very passionate about both as someone with a mood disorder and someone in the mental health profession, the simple altruism of this is awesome.

Of all of the championship rings that have been handed out in every sport, ever, this is the first time I know of that one was simply donated for a charitable cause. Sold to pay debts, hocked for drug money, maybe, seized in bankruptcy settlements, lost in drunken hazes, (ok, I don’t really know of any of those), or just left around to gather dust in a display case, championship rings are fought over and slobbered over and obnoxiously worn occasionally.

But ultimately it is just a big gaudy chunk of gold and diamonds for all that. Unless somebody melts it down and takes it apart someday, it might as well be plastic. It is just a symbol of something greater, something that isn’t physically tangible, winning a title. The value of this piece of jewelry, impressive as it is at what, maybe $30,000, $40,000? Isn’t really that much compared to what most athletes earn in either salary or endorsements. Even for an athlete like Ron Artest who is getting paid comparatively less than many of his teammates, it’s chump change.

The really valuable thing to Artest is in my opinion not the symbol of winning, it’s the fact of winning. The fact that he was on and contributed so much to the winning team won’t disappear when he gives away the ring.

But ignore all that. Think what this means to Laker fans who are thrilled at the chance to spend money to take part of something about their favorite team. Sports fanaticism is all about vicariously seizing some part of a great athletic achievement. Tickets to see the Lakers, a Ron Artest (#37?) jersey, a big coffee table book of black and white pictures, a DVD of behind the scenes videos. These fans now have a chance to bid for what has to be the greatest piece of Lakers memorabilia ever.

Then stop thinking about that. Think about what this is actually doing. Laker fans are suddenly given a chance to take part in a great effort to raise money for a great cause. Not only supporting their team, but through supporting their team, just helping people.

Giving money for mental health treatment for kids in schools is a great thing. I can promise from personal experience that there aren’t people, especially trained people there to turn to. Kids are miserable for years.

I thought that the symptoms of a mood disorder were normal. If I’d never been able to go to college where there was help available I might still think that. If I was even alive, that is.

Kids hurt themselves, hurt other people, and they flat out kill themselves because they don’t have someone there to help them to understand what is happening inside their head. Even if this saves one or two kids it would be worth it, but this could potentially put hundreds of mental health professionals in a position to help.

Of all the great things this can potentially do for kids though, the greatest thing has already been done. A great basketball player, a championship athlete with the Los Angeles Lakers, the biggest thing in basketball has come out and said ‘I have a mental illness. I see a therapist. I am dealing with it, and it’s ok.’ I’m probably not the only person who sees the parallels to what Magic did for people with HIV, but they are there. There is a huge stigma associated with mental illness that its victims don’t deserve.

There is nothing wrong with having a mood disorder, or seeing a psychiatrist or a psychologist. They can help. And I think because of what Ron Artest has done, thousands or hundreds of thousands of kids have been exposed to that idea.

And I will acknowledge that as freakin awesome.

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE

My favorite story ever.. That dude with the flag is my new hero.

63 Footer- And where do you live?

@MM - I gave you incorrect info on putting in your fantasy league team. You can actually change the same day roster up til 5 minutes before tip off. However, to make free agent changes you have to input those by 12am PST. Sorry for any confusion.

Post Script to that-

Personally, and I realize the possibly appropriateness of putting it on this thread, I'm not big on gambling. I think it isn't a cool thing, it hurts more people than it helps (if it helps anybody), but I will be happy to buy raffle tickets for this.

I don't care if I win or not, the money will be going to a good cause.

If, of course, it is a good cause. I definitely encourage Ron to tell us more about the specific details of where this money is going to go and how it will be administered before I give him money.

I know the reputations of some of the people he is working with on this, and I believe that his intentions are good, but it will definitely help if he will provide details.

LRob - we need some music selections from you right before tip off to send the Nation in a frenzy...I hope your boy Pau neutralizes Yao...

Jackie Robinson - you're a legend, and welcome to the madness...

Lakers are the underdog...hehehe...I like...

Shelley Smith - Lakers: "We are the Champs...come get us!!!

Well said phred. I agree with everything you said, particularly on how there is such a stigma about seeing a shrink for ANY reason. I was raised to believe that therapy was a tool when one had a problem, but also just to get a better idea of who one was, to get in better touch with one's creativity, and just as an outlet.

A person goes to physical therapy for a problem. No one gives it a second thought. A person goes to a physical trainer (pretty much the same thing), and no one gives it a second thought. Someone goes to mental therapy... stigma. I think Ron's doing a great, great thing. Even if it only helps to get one person to seek help who wouldn't have, that's worth all the Rings in the world.

@OUTLAW... Gotcha. Lakers play Warriors at Oracle Arena on Wed, Jan 12th and Wed, Apr 6th. I am tentatively planning on taking my wife, son, and grandson to the January game as part of their Xmas gift so the April game would be a great one to shoot for to get some bloggers together to go to the game. We also are planning on getting together a few times during the year at a bar to watch a game together, which would likely be on a weekend, which might make better sense for you. Let me know what you think. Let’s do something.

@PHRED... That was wonderfully said, phred. Let me also say that I agree 100% with what you wrote. I especially like the point you made that winning the championship is more important than the symbol. It reminds me of the quote at the end of the Replacements where Gene Hackman tells the guys that “greatness, no matter how brief, stays with a man.” Ron seems to have taken that to heart, something that is incredibly admirable and touching. It’s hard not to love the man for his sense of goodness and sensitivity.

TOM

Yeah, I think the logical thing to do when your team's players are purportedly threatened by a voodoo curse is to go on the website of your teams 'rival' (as if) and complain about it incoherently. I think in most voodoo circles this is actually widely acknowledged as the most practical cure.

Thanks everyone for the kind words on the RCOTD.

@Edwin, the man of wisdom - thanks for the compliment. Me loves bball & music, but as far as the cooking goes...I'm excellent at taking something out of the freezer for the wonderful wifey to prepare. However, I do take care of the dishes now that my dishwasher is at college...lol.

@OCinMambaCounty - welcome and I'm glad you posted, but let me warn you it could become addictive.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES . . .

Comparing pregame rhetoric from last year's opening day to this year...

LAST YEAR ~ Buzz of anticipation was about 72 wins
THIS YEAR ~ Buzz of anticipation is about Three-peat -- much better!

LAST YEAR ~ Craving revenge against Celtics in Finals
THIS YEAR ~ Savoring victory over Celtics in Finals -- much better!

LAST YEAR ~ Only add was Artest and we were nervous
THIS YEAR ~ Adds of Blake, Barnes, Ratliffe, Ebanks, Caracter -- much better!

LAST YEAR ~ MM a newbie
THIS YEAR ~ MM has earned his stripes -- much better!

LAST YEAR ~ Walton injured in preseason
THIS YEAR ~ Walton injured in preseason -- some things never change!

Well said LakerMike

People, People, People!!! In almost one hour from now our beloved Princess Jimmy will make his debut as a Miami Heat on TNT!! OH it is such a spine tingling moment!!!! Will the lil Biatch throw smoke in the air, will he Riverdance or will he just bite his fingernails. There is even a rumour that he has been practicing all summer how to do a Crossover Riverdance while taking notes! Sweet Jesus! They even say he has added smoke throwing to his LeCrab dribble. And yet all you haters want to deny his greatness. They showed a sneak peak of his Crossover Riverdance while taking notes and it almost brought me to tears, yes tears. SWEET JESUS!!! It was a thing of beauty.

On a more serious note Michael Wilbon and Jon Barry both predict The Lakers to 3-peat.

IT'S GAME DAY BABY!!!

It is time once again to draw a line in the sand, my brethren, and tell the world that we are the World Champions! They will come that far and no further! We shall lay claim to the sweet feat of the 3peat and watch all others retreat!

I hope Yaos foot doesn't hold up...Hey! That's not nice is it? Oh well it isn't true either! Ha! Thought I was a jerk didn't you? All of you had that little voice in the back of your mind say the same thing. You know you heard the voices...the ones that just said 'What voices?' Told ya! Maybe Ron-Ron knows someone that can help...me?

Anyway, all that aside, I just wanted to say hi. It's been a while. I was getting tired of hitting myself with a pipe wrench every time the Lakers blew a lead last year, so I started reading again. We all know what happens then. You start wanting to read a little more. Then you sneak a read in at work, hoping that nobody notices. Soon that's not enough so you start reading by yourself late at night after your girl has gone to sleep. It gets bad after that. You feel this need, this desire for more. But what more is there? NO...not that...not reading in the car! That's illegal! Oh the stupidity! Then...then you hit rock bottom. I have succumbed to my addiction and I am now at the bottom of my pit...I need to post. If I don't post a comment, I might not make it until the game.

Thank you for your support,
Lakerman420

I would like to say that I love the musical recommendations in general, but I really appreciate it when Zaira posts one, because 1)the eclecticism and range of her selections almost ensures that I will like a least of couple of them and 2)she doesn't post a bunch of obscure seventies stuff that I really don't get.

I actually remembered today that I used to have a cassette tape (honest) of Michael Nyman's soundtrack from 'the Piano' and I loved it. I haven't listened to it in years, but I got inspired to go out and legally purchase *ahem the album and listen to it again.

(hey, I paid for the dang thing once)

BRAKING NEWS!!!

This just in...The Lakers Nation Bus Caravan just hit a pedestrian...

After pulling over and checking the victim...He remarked that the King can't be stop and mumbled something about voodoo...

Police came to the scene only to find the victim missing...

When questioning LEWSTRS the driver of the bus...The only statement given was..."We thought we struck a deer, but it seems it was some homeless bum claiming he was 'the new big three'...

Inexplicably...the guy disappeared right before the police got there...right when it mattered most...

Lakers Bus are rolling...Beware...keep out of the way...There is no stopping us!!

LEWSTRS,

Slow that Bus down and let me hop on! Thanks!

This is non sense, theres no such thing as witchcraft and voo doo. I refuse to believe that they think they can stop king james with little dolls. His presence, game, and fame is above it all... eat that haters

Sir I am going to try to explain this one more time. First King James died several centuries ago. I think who you are refering to is this Biatch named Princess Jimmy. Now about those suppose Vodoo Dolls. I will say this one last time they are not Vodoo Dolls. Those are Dolls from Princess Jimmy's private collection! Don't snicker LakersBlog, I see nothing wrong with the Lil Biatch playing with Dolls.

LRob - we need some music selections from you right before tip off to send the Nation in a frenzy...I hope your boy Pau neutralizes Yao...

Lew - Hmmm...you know I like a good challenge. I'll see what I conjure up.

But before we get whipped into a frenzy I want to reflect back on what a great 365 days its been as Laker fans. Fellas...its alright to get a little sentimental every once in a while...lol - compliments of one of my all time favorite artist...elected in RRHOF in the inaugural class of 1986

@ phred - loved your post regarding Ron's ring & the post script. Also, the obscure 70's music comment has me literally laughing out loud. You've been kind of scarce recently and your absence has been missed.

OH HELP ME LORD 10 MINUTES TO PRINCESS JIMMY!!! I THINK I'M GOING TO FAINT!!!!

Yeah, I think the logical thing to do when your team's players are purportedly threatened by a voodoo curse is to go on the website of your teams 'rival' (as if) and complain about it incoherently. I think in most voodoo circles this is actually widely acknowledged as the most practical cure. Posted by: phred | October 26, 2010 at 03:45 PM
