The Lakers' second unit and the big question about offense

Blake_250 Everyone who follows the NBA understands how important the second unit is to not only winning games but winning championships. The moves the Lakers made in the offseason certainly filled their needs -- a proven point guard in Steve Blake to team with high-flying guard Shannon Brown, providing a formidable long-range shooter and an athletic slasher. The departed Jordan Farmar was a fine second-unit point guard, but I think Lakers fans will be pleased with Blake's efficiency, and I expect Brown to continue to improve.

Newly acquired Matt Barnes will team in the front court with Lamar Odom, giving the Lakers two athletic and versatile performers. Barnes scores in a variety of ways, mainly via cuts to the basket and going to the offensive glass. He's not a bad spot-up shooter either. Odom is always a key cog and tends to perform better when he's moved into the starting lineup for an injured player, but he must be the second unit's leader and provide scoring punch for the Lakers to see success.

Barnes_200Those four will have to shoulder the burden because the other reserves will come from a pool of two rookie draft picks -- small forward Devin Ebanks and power forward Derrick Caracter -- and three veterans who return with big question marks: inconsistent guard Sasha Vujacic, recently oft-injured forward Luke Walton and center Theo Ratliff, a 37-year-old who is a defensive stopper and little else.

I don't think Walton is going to return to form in the near future. And Vujacic, for all his frenetic energy, has lost his shooting touch when it counts. Rookies? Who was the last rookie you remember Coach Phil Jackson relying on to pile up points? Caracter might get some opportunities because through injuries and foul trouble he could get some decent minutes.

It's really going to be about Blake, Odom, Barnes and Brown -- or what I now deem the BOBB effect. As they ebb and flow, so will churn the Lakers' fortunes. They'll get major minutes, and they'll need to produce. If they don't, look for a 15th man to be signed and some players to be moved, because you can't ask the starting five to score 90% of your points

Good Morning JohnnyV! How are you on the eve of this fine Freakin 16 time NBA Champion LA Lakers Holiday Weekend?

Hi gang,

It's been awhile. Ok, so I've been slack. I admit it. I apologise.

I think the off season moves will prove fortuitous, I really do.

I also have faith that Kobe's offseason rest will result in a refreshed "Bean" come October.

I'm optimistic- and I have to tell you, I prefer being the underdog (It's an Australian thing) so Miami's ego-laden moves makes me reaonably happy in a schadenfreudic way.

Much love to you all,

Anna
(formerly Anna in Bondi)

Good Morning Johnny V and rest of Laker Nation.

I'm expecting big things from the bench this year. If they hold us their end of the bargain, we'll have a fresh Pau/Kobe/Ron Ron for the post season.

Blake is our best backup guard since Fish was coming off the bench.
LO is one of top 6th man. A matchup nightmare.
Barnes brings good d, spot up 3's and a he's feisty.
Shannon brings energy and explosiveness
Sasha - can stretch the floor (if he can revert back to 08)
Theo - veteran presence
Caracter - he will score if given the minutes
Ebanks - another athletic wing defender
Walton - triangle expertise. (if healthy)

One interesting aspect of that 1972 team was that the Lakers were being coached by a HOFer Celtic, Bill Sharman. Could you imagine that happening today? That would be like Larry Bird or Kevin McHale coaching Kobe and Co. Yikes...

Posted by: The Snake | September 02, 2010 at 11:54 PM
----------

Not only Sharman, but also KC Jones. So yes we do owe the Celtics a big assist for the first title in LA.

FYI...Red Auerbach wasn't a happy camper about them coming to the Lakers. He was like a lot of bloggers here about Shaq going to beantown.

"Mamba in the Morning". Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! I am great this fine Laker morning. You know, some will take their swipes at our blog and the energy/enthusiasm here, but I'll say that for me ... this is the best thing going.

I second Johnnyv's salute to you Dan Loumena. I believe if not for your timely intervention, this Blog would have completely imploded. It was close, so close. But thanks to your expert, steady and guiding hand it looks like we are back on course....OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR...SO SAY WE ALL!!!

Lrob- I'm loving the Kareem/Wilt posts. I missed all of Wilt and Russell, and most of Kareem, so I always love to get a "look" at those great players. One of the things that upset me about Shaq is that if he had their/Kobe's attitude and work ethic, he may have had a chance to go down as the greatest center ever (at least been right up there with those guys.)

Well dogone it, if you are expecting big things from the Bench then I guess they better just come through. I mean we aren't talking about just anyone's Great Expectations, we are talking about Freakin LRob and if they know what's good for them they will come thru and then some. Lol! Just playing with you bro. Good Morning and Happy Holidays!

Lol! Naw I had to hand the baton off to Magic Phil. It's a sad tragic story LRob, virtual marriage almost won and lost and other virtual things to silly to mention. Lol. But...I made it up to 125! Lol!

You know Dan took the time to get us a morning post so I will take the time to comment.

I like our bench with Blake, Odom, Barnes and Brown (Bobb, I like it). If Theo can contribute (BIG IF) then Phil can stop the platooning of our 2 Centers (at least as much). That is the serious hole in our bench game in my opinion.

I would love to see the Lakers blow some people out or at minimum, control the games. If that can happen and the bench plays alot more this year, then it would be GREAT to see a true second unit. Character and Ebanks are a 4 and a 3. Even if they contribute, they are 3rd string.

So my conclusion, if Theo can contribute some meaningful minutes and play a real role on the second unit, we have a second unit of 5 we can roll out there for a significant run.

Thank you for keeping me on the blog roll, despite my lengthy absence. Feeling the love, Anna Posted by: Annanotherthing | September 03, 2010 at 07:03 AM

Hello Lovers!!!
Yes, I'm back-ish.. while my blog presence might not have been strong, my Laker-love was.. I'm happy to say I went to my FIRST EVER Laker game (Dec 22 vs OKC) which was amazing and I'm looking forward to a great 10/11.. Looking to come back to LA in Apr/May..
Mamba24- I enjoy the Brian McKnight, but I'm an old skool girl- I get goosebumps from the Randy Newman.. I just can't help it!

PS: heading to Paris next weekend- most excited person on the planet!!

Good morning crew!

Nice post Dan - I can't wait to see the new BOBB. Hopefully, it will be a beautiful new hair style!

My real wish is that Odom's leadership success in FIBA translates to a rejuvenated role as leader of the BOBB.

However, I think the maturity of this season's bench will be far different than season's past. This bench has one goal only - WIN A RING. Previously, you had ego's and need to score, need to play. That is almost all gone (Sasha, are you listening?).

I can't wait as team and blog will start the road with one like mindset in a month.

Cheers all - PLG

Good Morning Dan & MAMAB24!

Glad to have some journalist analysis on this wasteland of off-season-post-FA-signings summer/fall, although we got frost last night. There are a few seemingly knowledgeable bloggers here who have keen instincts for the game and personnel, but we rely on you folks who can walk into a practice facility and call up a NBA type and get real info.

Anyway, I like the 2nd team analysis, as it seems right on to me. I am still concerned about what if anything Kobe is doing to improve his messed up shooting hand finger(s)!!??

Any news about whether or not LO is saving himself for the Lakers or just showing the world why we are always confused about which LO will show up game to game?

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!! Good Morning PsychedLakerGirl how are you this fine Lakers Morning.
*
Good Morning Nuggets Country, how are you? Been awhile. And how's the little tyke Carmello? lOL!

Dan,

Great article. Truly great. I can see some really nice things happening to the Lakers just because of how Mitch retooled the second unit. It was our source of pain last season, it should be or source of strength this season.

First off, I'm going way out on a limb by stating that Boston will meet LA in this year's Finals. Period. This particular championship is the most crucial maybe in the history of the NBA. This is the season where Boston must defend its title as the winningest frachise of the NBA. There is NO WAY Beantown allows Miami to fight their battle for them. No Freaken Way!

Plus, the top half of the Least is a Beast all of a sudden (the bottom half is still a bunch of High School teams -- sigh). I just don't see the fire inside any on Miami neccesssary to knock of Orlando and Boston and Chicago. Not yet. After getting their ears boxed by the Craptics this season, then maybe Miami's mettle gets forged, for next season.

But, mark my words, if Miami does pull it off in only one season, their MVP will be Wade, and not LBJ. Queen James just doesn't have the burn in his gut.

Kobe and Co. still have a Guantlet to pass through over here in the West. With one team, the Thunder, that Kobe has praised in a way that he never has in life by saying, "[The Thunder] scared the Hell out of us." Those were his exact words.

Is Oklahoma mature enough to realize that their success this post season really does rely on them to win enough games to control their own post season destinies? I hope we all realize that the probability of us getting past the fast-improving Durantula somewhat depends on the circumstances for which we meet them in the playoffs:

1) If we see them in the first round, we will probably brush them asides -- they've yet to taste playoff success as a group.

2) If we meet them in the mid-rounds, it will be a battle, but LA prevails easily.

3) If we meet them in the WCF, after they've knocked off a Portland, a Sacramento, a Dallas, a San Antonio, and/or a Utah, then by all accounts that series will be the de facto NBA Finals. That meeting will be epic. By the time they meet us, they will have learned and demonstrated that winning "thing". When I look into Durant's eyes, I see Kobe. Scary.

I never sleep on Portland. That is a championship franchise that has just been snake-bitten for the past decade or so. They have a lot of long talented players. They could be a problem.

If the Lakers take care of business, they will still emerge, hardened (if they can be even better forged than they are now), and ready for battle.

Boston, I am sure, will be poised to defend their historical crown. I don't see any other team over there with enough juice to get past them -- talent aside.

Now, imagine if Kobe is able to defeat the Ceptics after they have just defeated the Three Flamingos from Florida? He is then responsible for taking the crown from the Bostonians that they never, ever, ever thought they would have to relinguish?

--FEARless

BREAKING NEWS:

Lakers blog's dysfunctional family is made up of the Compton's finest, east LA's braves, lumber jacks from Oregon and adding fuel to the psychic is the SMOG, no wonder prosperity short lived.

Your neighbor in Northern CA.

Great post FEARless. Oaklahoma is great team, and have not reached their potential. Durant is going to far surpass Lebron as the best player of his generation. Oaklahoma still needs a center, though, and if the Lakers meet them again they will take them deadly serious. Portland is another scary team, but it seems they only play really well against the Lakers. I have endured some horrible games in Portland, as rabid sun starved fans chanted death threats to Kobe and crew. The only other outside team that could be tough is Houston, if they get Yao back at a decent level and another player via trade, which they are looking to do.

Good morning . . . sour mash, anyone?

Happpy Friday to all in Lakerland... We have one heck of a season to look forward to... The NBA will be FANTASTIC AGAIN and our team will have their hands completely full. The Bullseye is back on their jerseys AGAIN and our opponents will be doing their darndest to ruin a storybook ending for our beloved PJ. The team will be ready to defend and "BOBB" will wreak havoc in every game this coming season. Get and stay healthy "Drew" because in my opinion, you are the key for an easier road to the 'chip and I suspect Kobe is going to be passing the ball a lot more this season increasing his efficiency along the way. Have a great and safe holiday weekend Laker ?Fiends." GO LAKERS and in BUSS WE TRUST!! Mitch K is DA MAN!

The next Major Major moves for the lakers: buy out luke's contract and trade shasha, they have their rings and fun on the bench, time to move on guys.

Not long ago I read an article (Bleacher Report, or Yahoo alerts)
comparing Lakers starters vs all the other teams starters. I did not see any better. But I think the better comparison is who is the deepest team and not just starters.
Consider this;
1) Point guards- Derrick Fisher,Steve Blake, Shannon Brown, Sasha, Kobe, LO.
2)Shooting guards- Kobe, Shannon, Sasha, Matt Barnes, Ebanks.
3) Small forwards- Artest, Barnes, Luke(if healthy)Kobe, Ebanks, LO.
4)Power forwards- Gasol, Odom, Artest, Caracter, luke (if healthy)
5) Bynum, Gasol, Odom, Caracter, Ratcliff

Now consider PJ has a choice of any combination of all these versitle players mixing starters and bench for any given game or opponet and style of play the Lakers want to play any given night. Now that is depth!

I'm actually an 'Island Boy' Filipino...but I do speak some Spanish...helps with the Hispanic clients....
Of course my Spanish vocabulary consists mostly of cuss words...lol
And the Philippines were under Spain for 200 years, so alot of it bled into the dialect and surnames...

Lewstrs,
Good to hear your background. Yes I am very aware of Spanish influence in PI after being a colony os Spains' many moons ago. LOL.
I know about Spanish in the dialects as there are over 500 dialects spoken in PI as you know. I have been to PI many times and learned words and phrases which like you say cuss words and things you don't say to and around women. LOl.
Of course those words are mainly in tagalog.
Salamat for the info.

Interesting stuff about trade rejected by Knicks.

Rudy Fernandez continues to lobby for a trade to New York, but the Knicks either can't or won't make a trade for the Portland shooting guard.

According to a team source, Knicks president Donnie Walsh recently rejected a three-team deal that would have sent Anthony Randolph to Indiana, a first-round pick to Portland and Fernandez to New York.

Because the Trail Blazers are insisting on receiving a first-round pick in return for Fernandez, the Knicks likely need to recruit a third team in order to complete a deal. The Blazers apparently have little interest in Wilson Chandler. Fernandez, who is currently playing for Spain at the world championships in Turkey, was fined by the NBA for publicly asking for a trade.

Denver's Carmelo Anthony has avoided similar punishment from the league, although from all indications, he'd like to be traded to the Knicks, Nets, Rockets or Clippers.

Unlikely but a perfect storm in basketball terms could land in LA.
Long shot close to no shot but got to admit Mitch got us Gasol.

Mamba24, hold on your temper or cool with these trolls. They are the descendants of Lucifer and Cain....envious with the Lakers fan whom they regard as dysfunctional, envious of our team's success so they find ways to wreck whatever the blog has achieved, envious of anything about LA so they mentioned it in their smoggy posts. I don't think Dan L or MM would ever clean up this blog and through the march of time we have to find ways to live with them. They have a role to play like the Joker, the Darth Vader, or the late Jack Palance in the old western movies. You can only avoid them but never eliminate them, it is the sweet and sour thing in any viands therefore don't stoop down to their level. To the Laker family, please ignore all their posts.

I know JLF or Justa as he wants to be identified is not a troll, he is an avid Laker fan too, lost in the mist of posts of JAMF. Given a chance, he will prove like today that he has a lot of things to contribute to the blog, however there is no comparison to our walking purple and gold Wikipedia, LRob. With all his experiences and resources LRob, could put up his own blog or even his own team with the help of Magic. lol!

With the improvement of the Lakers 2nd unit, it will be night and day. Indeed, it is true that there is athleticism in Shannon and a long ball sailing on Blake & Barnes. A defensive artist in Barnes and a reliable shot blocker in Theo. Farmar may be a jack of all trade but master of none. I wish him luck with Nu Jessy and Russian owner. From there, we have two more rookies who could contribute at get go, young tall and athletic i.e. if Luke and LO or Sasha are not ready to take over. LO should be the leader of the reserves, not just a disappearing reality TV player fond of chocolates. You don't know what to expect whether mixed with nuts or plain strawberries. He is now an old keg in the Laker line-up and his time has come to prove that he really belongs to this team. We need stability and consistency from LO.

Is there any better defensive team than the Lakers now? I think adding Blake, Barnes, and Ratliff makes them the toughest and grittiest defensive team in the NBA.

H-E-A-L-T-H. The Lakers have won the last 2 NBA championships because 1-6, we had the talent, toughness, coaching and experience to beat ANY team in a 7 game series. Before last season, the Magic and Cavs were touted to have the "deepest" teams in the NBA and the Suns' depth carried them all the way to the WCF. Meanwhile, the Lakers bench was called "wafer thin" by many so-called experts. I am thrilled that Mitch Kupchak signed BOBB. This should spell a lot more rest for our aging veterans during the 82 game practice season. In the end, however, the HEALTH of 1-6 will determine whether PJ brings home three-peat #4.

Can Theo hold his own againt Shaq? how about Jermaine? how about Perkins? once Drew is in foul trouble, WHAT YOU GOing to DO?

Posted by: Phoenix | September 03, 2010 at 08:29 AM

======================
I see a lot of the same bs you are posting that another blogger from Phoenix used to say. The name eludes me right now but it will come back to me. You made a bet but failed to keep your part of the bet when Lakers beat Phoenix. You tried to come in with Septic nonsence too.

Now to answer your question(s) Theo would not get much time against Shaq but would hold his own with Jermaine and Perkins. Bynum ate up Jermaine and blocked him twice in one sequence. Shaq would be no problem as we will run until Shaq blows his lungs and legs out being tired. On offense we pick n Roll him to death. No problem.
You fail, try again later.

Hi Anna,

Very nice to see you again. You look good.

Wes

Setp. 26th....Season starts with a media session and practice in the afternoon. Three more weeks.....YEAAAAAA!

OOPS.. I meant Sat the 25th!!

Dan makes a good point: Who's our scoring machine on The Bench Mob?

Ummm... The Machine? Maybe?

Well, the whole Bench Mob won't be on the floor together 85% of the time so Kobe, The Surgeon or The Beast will have to do the scorin', methinks.

The other 15% of the time Blake will distribute the ball so that no one player has huge numbers, but the whole group has balanced scoring.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

I am officially calling for all the regular bloggers to return to this, our home, and support both Dan and our fellow old-timers who have been battling these unseemly trolls single-handedly for weeks. I return now at the turning of the tide. The horn of helm hammerhand shall sound in the deep one last time!

Wes

Good morning Lakers faithful,

Hey JohnnyV, glad you're enjoying the blog. I've got to admit it's kind of tough to find fodder with the team on hiatus, but I'll keep trying. Reading the comments certainly helps because you guys clue me in to what concerns you, what interests you have. Hats off to each of you for keeping this lively, and to LRob for anchoring the night crew.

It doesn't look as if any handles have been grabbed today. I see JustaHater has again lived up to his handle. Everyone has an opinion, but he is treading on thin ice. I noticed he's posted under different handles, too, all his own I do believe.

I'm glad to see people rejoining the gang after summer breaks or disinterest. I'm almost down to counting the hours before Mark Medina returns. I'm sure you guys are as well.

I'll check you later, Laker fanatics. If you're in SoCal and living in an inland valley as I do, try to stay cool. It won't be easy.

Dan Loumena

Edwin,

Thank you for the kind words and that means a lot to me really. When I first joined the blog you made it a point to welcome me and have me added to the roll call. I felt like wow this is a great family. I remember you asking for other bloggers to come back who have not commented in a while. You truly are one of the backbones of this blog.

Thanks again my brother from a different mutha.

Good morning for ya, blessed from Cali's sun Laker Fam, and good afternoon/evening/night to all those who like me blog from other (equally sunny I must say in my case, for the day that is dusking away) places.

It's exciting to get warming up for the season and see bloggers coming back (Anna, so pleased!!), while we start to put our impressions from the Summer into some valuable expectation.

From the threads below, I just wanna say I wouldn't like ANY other player coming in our roster as for "Big People" (read: Melo in this case) and especially Lamar (whom I consider a key player in his 6th man role, just like I did last year, no matter this past slightly underwhelming playoffs, for which he had the more than valuable excuse of his back though), unless the man in question isn't named Kevin Durant.

But I still wouldn't give up Lamar easily not even for him.
Lamar is a force especially when he gets paired with Pau (agree, most skilled power forward in the whole NBA hands down), because the two just naturally speak the same kind of basketball language and I'm not really sure some other pairing could bring the same with the same naturality).

Everybody knows though that I consider Kevin a real deal, although I can't stand the hype building on him (but at least he has more skill and valuable approach at working ethic than LeBronze, so I look at him with interest).
I think he could become really really a great champion if he'd ever get a way to witness from nearby positions (like... daily training?) our Kaiser #Kobe and learn from him everything he could.

I'm really hoping we could find a way to make this pair (trio, with Pau) wear our glorious jersey but this is a matter of incoming seasons, not this one.

I'm really pleased with the addition of the new forces.

Let's face it, last year problem #1 outside injuries was the inconsistency of the bench.
We spent months highlightening that and all that Mick Kup did this postseason was to be granted that inconsistency and displeasing attitude could be erased, through some shake up.

We have gained experience and as someone smartly pointed out, we gained WILL to win.

Look how Ron Ron changed and was precious when he brought his raw skill at triangle (boy... can't wait for this years "pearls of wisdom" between Ron and PJ... that should be a tv show ;)... I love you Ron!!!) matching it with a totally focused and humble even will of winning a ring.

Teh bench this year has that same hungry.

I am so thrilled about it all!!!.

I actually hope that Sasha can shake his dust off and become valuable again.
I mean... either that, or given that his ladylove is by now nothing but a tall giant without anymore power at tennis, maybe he could move out graciously and chose other floors and sport to perform onto? (he was pretty good with rackets in the imagery we saw this summer, right? ;)).
Out of jokes, I do believe the fact that Sasha will be surrounded by a different bench environment will help him getting his hunger back as well.

And we would benefit of it a lot.

Shannon this year gotta show the same mental checking to improvement that for instance Andrew displayed during the playoffs.

We need it ShanWow: okay for all the show and the jumps and the fly... but you need to register your point/per time-ratio.

I am really all up for the season.

I need to see my Knights back on working duties - and I know is gonna be such a blast ;)

Fear nothing, Laker Nation:we're here to Three-Peat ;)

Have a great day Fam: in a while it's clubbing Friday over here...
wwhoooooo-yeah!!

LLL. Lotta Laker Love, Z. ;)

TO FIGHT THE TROLLS I SUGGEST FOLLOW THE ADVICE OF BLOG'S ELDER WISE SAGE EDWIN GUECO:

WROTE EDWIN GUECO:

Rather than batting an eye for an eye why not imitate Jesus if somebody spank your cheek, turn around and offer the other cheek. Any Laker fan would like to go along with his fellow fans.

Peace & back to vacation.

Posted by: Edwin Gueco | August 28, 2010 at 12:05 PM

RESPONSE: Once again Edwin has a an excellent advice to young whipper snapper, is there such a thing as spanking the cheek?

No offering the other cheek stuff, just the total ignore - no acknowledgement. I wouldn't be writing except for it's been brought up again in print on the blog.

It really seems to work to not feed the animals - they go away.

Total ignore - no acknowledgement. Get word to Dan off the blog if thefts occur and you can't ignore it. We all know the styles of bloggers and can sense when something is written out of the style of a legal blogger. Dan and MM, can you supply us with an off-blog email address? The Kam Bros. were easy to reach in the old days. Thanks, all.

Mamba24,

What would we do without you - Resident Cheerleader and Morale Master. Thanks bro, for keeping the spirit up.

... FEARless, you're reader comment of the day, in my books. Nice post.

... Dan, thanks for the write-up..... It's been rather dry since MM went away, and write-ups like the one you posted today gives us something interesting to chew on.

At least, it has tempered Justa's inclination to sock someone at LA Times.... you go Xena Warrior!

when oh when is the season gonna start. I'm dyingggggggggggggggggggg of anticipation. Pathetic really, scouring any website for a nugget of information on my beloved Lakers.

I've been following the world championship and notice decreasing coverage of Lamar's contributions. The players contantly being discussed are Durant, Eric Gordon, Chauncey Billups, and Love. So Haberstroth's column on ESPN , "Three FIBA things to watch" perked my interest.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Kevin Love has been a vacuum on the boards, but should he start ahead of Lamar Odom?

Not to take away from Kevin Durant's effortless scoring display, but nothing has been more impressive this summer than Love's magnetic knack for the live ball. During FIBA competition, Love has grabbed 47 rebounds in 75 minutes of playing time, a rebounding rate we haven't seen since the brick-happy days of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. In fact, Love has collected more boards per 40 minutes (25.1) than fellow American bigs Odom and Tyson Chandler combined (22.6).

Yet despite the gaudy rebounding numbers, Coach K hasn't trusted Love enough to play him in key games thus far. The UCLA product didn't even see the court in the Spain exhibition game and managed a mere five minutes against Tiago Splitter and Brazil. These were Team USA's only two competitive games, yet the boarding beast barely got any run.

So, where's the Love?

One can't help but be enamored by Love's tenacity on the boards, but his pick-and-roll defense leaves much to be desired -- and that's a vital skill in the screen-centric world of FIBA basketball. According to Synergy Sports Technology, the Minnesota Timberwolves forward ranked among the bottom third in the NBA while defending pick-and-roll big men last season (0.95 points per possession). Against the FIBA powerhouses who run their offenses strictly off the pick-and-roll, Love becomes a defensive liability.

It's true that Love can stretch out the offense, power-clean the glass and finish at the rim. But as long as Odom isn't reverting to his stubborn Miami Heat days on the offensive end, Team USA should be better off starting the Rhode Island product on opposing bigs to have the best chance of stopping the screen. Odom is quick enough to trap out on the perimeter, as he did in the second half against Brazil, and long enough to clog the passing lanes.

But with Love's stellar glass work as of late, expect him to come off the bench for more than just garbage time Monday against Angola.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is why Odom is a valuable player. He may not put up gaudy numbers, but the dude certainly is not one-dimensional. He may not be outstanding in one particular area, but he does a lot of different things well, including the little things that are unglorified but matters to a team - defensive hustles, distribute the ball, and occassionally come alive on offense.

Odom is not a natural leader, and I doubt his stint with team USA will change him much when he comes back to the Lakers. He's a natural follower and need someone else to kick his butt for him. So the second unit may need someone else to step in and run it.

Countdown to Mark Medina's return....

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

So BRING IT ON!!! You know where to find us...

#17 Coming Up!!!

So now they're called the bench BOBB. lol

nice one. ^_^

Hey FEARless,

I agree with oregonion on two counts:

First, you had a great post. Never sleep on Portland, they do have talent, I'm just not sure they have the mettle yet. The Blazers and Thunder are the two teams with the youth and pieces with which to build a championship contender.

And oregonian, I have been very impressed with what a decimated Rockets team has pulled off the last two seasons with Tracy McGrady tanking his multimillionairness virtually out of the league while Yao Ming has battled injuries. They have some gutsy and underrated players there.

And a shout out to Edwin Gueco for his calming demeanor and his capsulized look at the Lakers bench. You got the group back on point. Most excellent.

Time to get ready for the night shift and the commute downtown through the holiday getaway traffic. It's as imposing as going down the lane and seeing Andrew Bynum and Theo Ratliff in your path.

Present. And (contrary to popular belief) unhandle-jacked.

This is really wonderful. I feel like breaking out in song! Hit it LRob...http://tinyurl.com/ylp3qqc _ I Love LA # 126

Okay...I didn't watch it yesterday...but that's pretty. Well done by Mr. McKnight and crew. That got me fired up for playoffs...let's just skip the regular season...and get it on.

FEARless - Great analysis.

Edwin - thanks for the compliment, but I'm just a Laker lover like 99.9% of the peeps here. continue to enjoy your vacation.

oops meant to say that's pretty well done by Mr. McKnight and crew.

Eric Pincus at hoopsworld.com has an article about the maybe the Lakers are being overlooked because of the monstrous Summer the Heat has made.

The Heat are just the new girl in school. I'm not overlooking the Lakers and I don't feel that anyone else is. We're so entrenched that maybe it's boring for some - like the Bulls in the '90's. I was tired of them winning.

Go Lakers

Scoring off the bench is just not going to be happening! Except as a result of defense. But that is what the Lakers have become; triangle offense (slow, infrequent, and boring) with the best defensive group in the league. Even better now with the new guys off the bench. Reminds me of the '90's Bulls : )

Mamba24... hate to be picky (ok not really) but, worthy and silk wilkes were forwards not guards. You must be a Youngster, I presume

Listen... we are speaking of the reigning NBA Champions...back to back! Everyone else is in it to create hype, and nothing more like laquit in cleveland. We won without a bench to speak of and now that has been a major improvement, thanks to Mitch. We are the best team, make no mistake, and we will have a say on the next title, trust me.

Laquit and wade made the miami moves to take the attention away from LA, andto make a splash....It doesn't matter who the challengers are, and who they claim to be....we have a better team than those who won two in a row, especially if the newbies grasp the offense....miami, boston, portland, orlando, san antonio...who cares??

You don't ask your starting five to score 90% of your points unless you're the Miami Heat that is!

yo man heres that thing u were asking about its http://sportscomplainer.com/nba my buddy found it the other day accidentally but good thing huh, well ill cya man
