Magic Johnson and his next move: NBA ownership?

Magic_450

A former colleague of ours, Scott Howard-Cooper, had an interesting article on nba.com about Magic Johnson possibly joining a new ownership group for the Detroit Pistons. Owner Bill Davidson passed away at age 86 in March and the family is expected to sell the team in the near future, likely to a Detroit group headed by Red Wings and Tigers owner Mike Ilitch.

Magic, an All-American high school player from East Lansing, Mich., and NCAA champion with Michigan State, has been rumored to be in talks to join Ilitch and Pistons GM Joe Dumars to become part of that group.

Does this make sense? Could it really happen? Yes and absolutely. Magic is never one to rest on his laurels and he loves to be part of something new and exciting. I'm not positive of the NBA rules, but I'm sure he'd have to give up his small interest in the Lakers -- I think we all know the Buss family will be running the Lake Show for many years to come -- to join another ownership group for a rival franchise.

The Davidson family has said they'd like to have a new ownership group in place before the start of the upcoming season, so the rumors, talks and discussion on who might take control and who will be involved should start heating up.

Good afternoon Lakers faithful,

Yes, someone impersonated several people in the comment section this morning. I have blocked that person's IP address. That makes two in two days.

Another post coming soon. Hang in there until Mark Medina comes back and the Lakers prepare for camp. As the saying goes, this is the darkness before dawn.

Have a good day. If I don't talk to you until tomorrow, 'Good afternoon, good evening and good night.'

Sounds good to me Utz. And how is mini Banner Holder & Holderette doing sir? Well I hope.

Dan, MM does a good job and it's hard to replace a 'legend' (hehe...) but it was good to read your bio and get a chance to know you a bit. For the record and what it's worth, I feel each of your blog entries have gotten progressively better and better.

At this rate, by the time MM returns we'll have a solid replacement. In Laker terminology, it's Nick Van Exel getting injured, and D-Fish coming in and doing a nice job filling in. Anyone have a better Laker analogy???

GO LAKERS!!!! GO TEAM USA!!!!

BTW anyone watching Slovenia vs Brazil? Slovenia looks pretty good minus Sasha. Guess he won't be playing on Team Slovenia anymore following his run-in with team officials a year or two back. Plus, after his confrontation with countryman Goran Dragic in last years playoffs, that pretty much sealed his fate I guess...

What is Sasha doing right now? I guess if I were dating Maria Sharapova, I'd be getting most of my exercise off the court - if you catch my drift... ;P

Dan.... You're doing a great job of holding down the fort till MM comes back.

Awwww I feel the love blogmunity!

Just want to stop by and say HI! Mamba please include me on all the bandwagons.

Ok, back to work. October is almost here :D

Add me to the Bandwagon in favor of Dan. Although we are counting the days to MM's return, it is nice to have a Sub who seems to get it.

If Magic becomes the owner of the Pistons, it could be Magic vs Jordan again..Pistons vs Bobcats. It would be interesting to see how he will be compared with Jordan as owner..I hope Magic picks better players than Jordan did.

@ LEW,

Add DBDH to the Mamba super bus. We roll deep, yo.

DBDH!

I think Magic leaving the Lakers might be the best thing...

I have been confused with Magic remarks and predictions about the Lakers, the last year or so...

Now that he want's to pursue ownership of a different team, now it's starting to make sense....

Magic knows he will always be a Laker, and will always be loved by Laker fans, but I think he is looking at the business side, and is following suit with MJ...

Wonder when Bird will announce he is pursing ownership...

@ Dan,

Well done, sir. You have impressed the natives with your efforts. If MM is our blog's flux capacitor, then surely you were the plutonium ibn his absence.

DBDH!

LEWSTRS: Definitely save me a seat on the Mamba24 blog love bus. Said it before, and will say it again right now, in my eyes Mamba24 and his roll call entries are the glue that holds this blog together and always bring a smile to my face!

I'm loving the vibe we got going this morning!

GO LAKERS!!!!! GO TEAM USA!!!!!

@ Lewsters,
Please add me to the Mamba24 Bandwagon. The LAT blog is an awesome place where very intelligent posters come to talk Lakers and basketball.

Mamba24 however is like our Magic Johnson. He adds excitement, energy, and balance to this wonderful community. Without him, this place just isn't the same.

Lew,

Wow dude, do I really have to ask for a seat on the Mamba bus?

GO LAKERS!!!

Hey utzworld - the BANNER HOLDER,

Calling me out on my basketball knowledge? First, I grew up in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. So you now know where my allegiances are in regards to fandom. Don't hold it against me. I'm kind of a basketball junkie and totally respect the Lakers, particularly the stewardship of Dr. Jerry Buss and the management by Jerry West and Mitch Kupchak to keep the team at championship levels year after year.

The Boston Celtics are one thing you don't want to be in the NBA -- old. While they have a budding superstar in Rajon Rondo and a fine young big man in Kendrick Perkins, the Big 3 are on the downside of the NBA hill. Adding Shaq doesn't change much. He's not a difference-maker anymore, as witnessed in Phoenix and Cleveland the last couple of seasons. Doc Rivers will have to watch their minutes and Kevin Garnett can no longer sustain his frenetic interior play for 82 games plus the postseason. KG, though, at 85% and healthy is still a beast.

But I still think they're No. 3 in the East, unless they stay very healthy and Rondo, Perkins and others continue to develop in leaps and bounds. The Heat and Magic are the teams to beat. I'm not a fan of three superstars going to one team, as Miami pulled off, but they managed to make it happen and now must perform on the court. They added some nice low-budget pieces that fit well with their superstars.

But let's face it. The NBA is currently the Lakers' playground and I see nobody in the West taking their ball and playing the Eastern Conference champion if Kobe and Co. remain relatively healthy.

I'm on.

Mamba24 is a force of nature, nothing less.

A sucker for lunar (female) influences, like the ocean,
but he keeps this boat afloat.

Magic's Top 10 Worst Decisions:

1. The Magic Hour
2. The Magic Hour (needs to be mentioned twice)
2. Attempt at coaching
3. Returning from retirement
4. Joining the BSPN crew
5. Giving up partial ownership of the Lakers to get partial ownership of the Pistons (say what?)
6. Predicting a Boston victory over the Lakers (absolute Lakers blasphemy)
7. Acting as happy as a lotto winner on ecstasy after a Boston win
8. Continually claiming that Jason Kidd was the best player in the league and ignoring Kobe (Magic refused to give Kobe his props for years. Can you say threat to greatest Laker legacy?)
9. Continually kissing BSPN's arse and claiming that Lebron is the best player in the league (this coming from someone who refused to relinquish the best player in the league status while he was playing until Michael Jordan won his first ring)
10. The Magic Hour

Dan: I've seen the light! "I'm kind of a basketball junkie" - I'm sold!

Too bad the team you must hold your allegiance for messed up their draft and took Greg Oden over Kevin Durant. Could you imagine where they'd be if they hadn't?

Didn't mean to depress 'ya, lol. Nice to know that a fellow hoop junkie is guiding the ship, allegiances aside.

Have one question though, when TJ Simers walks by, is there a sulfur smell that follows? muahahaaa.....

Actually, I'd like to thank TJ for one thing, he is the guy that motivated Kobe to break the all-time single game record for 3-pt shots made, had he not told Kobe that his daughter was a better shooter before the game, Kobe probably wouldn't have had the motivation for breaking the record in that nights game.

GO LAKERS!!!!! GO TEAM USA!!!!!

hi evryone it's looks like normal bloglife but we are incomplet team....
Were is Lakertom?..

I was hoping Delonte West would not go to the Celtics, Heat or Magic.
The Celtics just upgraded from Tony Allen to Delonte West for the minimum.
Delonte is better than Allen at creating his own shot, outside shooting and ball handling. He can play the backup PG or SG.
This is not good news.

Delonte West. pffft. The Chowds will sign anyone and teach them how to play Mixed Martial Arts basketball, which has been their style since Red Auerbach. Anyone can learn how to set illegal screens, chop at wrists, clothesline and otherwise play a cheating game that they know will be ignored by the East Coast biased, David Stern ruled referees. The Lakers, on the other hand, could have signed players like The Big Minimum or even Delonte West, but they sign players who fit their system and who, at the same time, can engage the Chowds in a cage match if need be. That is because the Lakers win championships playing the game of basketball, not a game that more resembles the WWE like the Chowds. and it has ALWAYS been that way! A game that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye vs. mayhem.

Meanwhile, I could care less what Magic Johnson wants to do with his business ventures. Good for him! Like Jerry West, he's a Laker for life no matter what. Thank God Magic is still with us and living a full, productive life.

Jon K has listed topics that are of great interest to us, but somehow don't make it to us. How about the progress of Bynum's rehab on his right knee? Has Kobe decided to live with the wrap on his arthritic finger (man that thing's UGLY)? What about his knee and other ailments? How about Luke's back? I would love to read a topic that spoke in depth about all three of these players and their health. THAT is the stuff that really matter to us right now.

If the staffing level has been cut, why is TJ Simers still employed at LAT?

He'd be the very first guy I'd get rid of.

I agree 100%

@ LAKER TRUTH,

11. The Converse Magic shoe (1990-1991). I had those nu-buck cinder blocks as well as the Jordan VI, and I tell ya... loyalty only goes so far. Those shoes were horrible on the court, worse on blacktop. The Jordans? Still the best athletic shoe I have ever owned. Stupid Nike!

12. Bumping that referee, a la Nick Van Expelled. Sheesh.

However, Magic is the reason I started loving basketball, let alone the Lakers. Sooooooo, all is forgiven.

Both shoes were showcased in the 1991 NBA Finals by their respective pitchman/jumpman.

Dan,

I was on a project in Willamette Valley 5 years ago. Excllent vineyards; IMHO, some of the best Pinot Noir's outside of Napa.

Please add me to the Dan-Band and the Mamba24 Bus! Gotta get back to BP, my AVE is slipping some! Still winning though, just like my Lakers, ha, ha.

Dell Harris,

How could I forget to leave Converse out of the top 10 list?

@ Magic Phil,

AGREED!

Remember that ridonkulous morning radio show with Fred Roggin, TJ Simers, and TJ's daughter Tracy?! What, they couldn't find anyone else to co-host with those two baboons? Roggin and Simers Squared? More like squashed. GACK! Boy, I thought his writing was junk. Then I heard his voice! Back to the depths of hell, you beast! Their show actually caused my car radio to die a catastophic death; I smashed it on the way to work one morning with my boot while listening to them howl and bark. TJ is like Superman on red kryptonite and Prozac.

DBDH!

ok, it's lowbrow, but somebody had to ask it:

Is (expletive deleted's) mother gonna be cheering for the Celtics or the Heat now?

KobeMVP888: The Big Minimum? man that is AWESOME!!! Laughed out loud for that one!

BTW I think the greatest center debate that has been going on for a few days is so hard, I go back and forth on it, have been for years. Russell vs Wilt vs Kareem vs Shaq (the dominance he showed for a couple of years). Even Walton has to be given some deference, barring his foot injuries he may have been the best of them all.

For what it's worth, Shaq in 2000 was the most imposing and dominant force of nature I'd ever seen on a basketball court. He wouldn't simply beat centers, he'd crush them to the ground in a pulverized heap.

I think that Shaq of 2000 would have matched the Big Dipper through sheer power, but is it fair to compare how we think they'd match up? There is no doubt that the full careers of Russell, Wilt and Kareem have far outstripped 'The Big Minimum's' - but could any one of those 3 have contained Shaq of 2000?

Career-wise though, Russell had a lot of help in playing with a boat-load of HOF'ers, and what was a 8-man team for part of his career. Much like some discount Mikan and his accomplishments, then Russell coming on the heels of it has to be looked at through a similar lens.

Wilt too had much of his most dominant years, at least offensively, in the early '60s, but I guess we could say that less teams = higher talent ratio per team - so that is the dilemma every time.

I will leave it at this, if there was a Mt. Rushmore of NBA centers, there are 3 faces at the top, side-by-side, those being Wilt, Russell and Kareem. Leaving anyone of those 3 off is very hard to do. I'd put Hakeem, Shaq, Mikan, Walton, Moses Malone on the plateau right below them. Willis Reed, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Bob Lanier, Nate Thurmand and The Chief Robert Parrish have to factor in to the conversation too for the next group.

If you put a gun to my head I might take Wilt over Kareem, but barely, just barely. A tough, tough call.

Good debate though! The footage you linked a day or two back was from WiltatKansas on youtube, that guy has the most impressive collection of Wilt Chamberlain footage on the internet that I've ever seen. I hope that one day NBA TV could run a lot of these old games, those would be priceless!

My goodness, if Sasha had even 10% of the game ON the court as he obviously has OFF of it, he'd be an all-star!!!

Gotta say though, the girl Pau Gasol got pictured sitting with at the Spain/USMNT scrimmage in Madrid would give Sharapova a run for her money. Don't know if that was his girlfriend, but she was absolutely drop-dead gorgeous!

This is brilliant! I even agree with your tiers and I am impressed that you did not forget about Moses Malone in Tier 2. I am biased, but I would elevate Willis Reed to tier 2 as long as Walton's there and I would add Dave Cowens, Wes Unseld and possibly Walt Bellamy to Tier 3. Great stuff.

Thank you sir, I've really enjoyed this debate the past few days. The footage though is priceless, thankfully there is youtube and people, like WiltatKansas and nonplayerzealot, that are kind enough, and mindful of history enough, to share with us all their collection of old tape and put it on the 'net.

I just hope that one day Andrew Bynum will blossom into another one of the long line of great Laker centers, and be a name worthy enough to be put on that list somewhere!

GO LAKERS!!!!! GO TEAM USA!!!!!

Here is the quote from Steve Kyler of hoopsworld.com when asked about Delont West could make an impact off the bench:
"No,...I think everyone is forgetting one thing about Delonte West - he is crazy... last year he would freak out getting onto the team charter because he's afraid to fly, he'd have mood swings and wouldn't talk to his coaches or staffers.... way too much negative."

lol JonK

Danny Ainge is creating something big, alright. He's either trying to recreate the Titanic, or the Hindenburg. Just not sure which...

GO LAKERS!!!!! GO TEAM USA!!!!!

Yes, Jon K., I've followed the Blazers since their first season. Heartbreak goes with the territory. That which does not kill you makes you stronger. Remember, the Blazers were 50-10 the year after they won the title. Had Bill Walton stayed healthy . . . then we pass on drafting Michael Jordan because we already have Clyde Drexler . . . some of the best teams to never win an NBA title played in Portland. We even tried to buy a championship and that imploded.

Hey, The Snake, I actually helped plant a vineyard near Champoeg State Park on a south-facing hillside -- our family farm was nearby -- that produces some award-winning wines to this day. I can't believe how that industry blew up in the Willamette Valley, which for those of you who don't know is very much like northern France and southern Germany.

Yes, CyberCosmicX, if the Blazers had taken Kevin Durant they'd rival the Heat now with the two best perimeter players on one team (no offense to DFish and Kobe). And maybe, Jon K, we would be the Lakers' rivals. I've already stated that all things equal, the Lakers have no peer in the West. Which is actually good for me and the LA Times!

I'm out for the afternoon, Laker-holics. Day off, errands to run, etc. Catch you all later.

Lew - You know I'm down with Mamba!

Go for it Magic... You're not only loved by Laker fans but by NBA fans around the world. You were simply the best point guard the world has ever seen.

In fact, it'll be "magic" if we ever get to witness a "magical" 6'9" point guard in any league ever again!!! Thanks for the memories and we haven't seen the level of genuine enthusiasm, desire and the will to improve God given talent since MJ and Kobe.

I will leave it at this, if there was a Mt. Rushmore of NBA centers, there are 3 faces at the top, side-by-side, those being Wilt, Russell and Kareem. Cyber/MVP- you guys covered it pretty much covered it all. I would probably throw Dolph Schayes on the third tier. Walton at his best was great but it was only for two years...so its hard for me to put him with that 2nd tier.

Oh yeah and we gotta add McAdoo to the third tier. Mac played euro style center before it was vogue.

Now this kind of Blog action is more like it!!

JR

JonK/Art,

Some of us Detroiters are quite happy living in our much maligned area. Hey, if we can survive Matt Millen we can survive anything.

THE LOVE STILL WANTS THE LAKERS TO BEAT DOWN THE PISTONS AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY, BUT WILL CHEER FOR THE PISTONS TO AT LEAST WIN THE EAST IF MAGIC OWNS THE TEAM.

Posted by: phred | September 01, 2010 at 12:13 PM

Okay, we definitely would wish Magic well, but cheering for the Pistons...hmmm I have to let that one marinate.

LRob,

Of course no offense was intended in my comments about Detroit.
If you and those who live there are happy there, that's all that counts.

LEWSTRS,

Get me on the Mamba bus! Pronto! Post haste!

That is all.
