Magic Johnson and his next move: NBA ownership?

Magic_450

A former colleague of ours, Scott Howard-Cooper, had an interesting article on nba.com about Magic Johnson possibly joining a new ownership group for the Detroit Pistons. Owner Bill Davidson passed away at age 86 in March and the family is expected to sell the team in the near future, likely to a Detroit group headed by Red Wings and Tigers owner Mike Ilitch.

Magic, an All-American high school player from East Lansing, Mich., and NCAA champion with Michigan State, has been rumored to be in talks to join Ilitch and Pistons GM Joe Dumars to become part of that group.

Does this make sense? Could it really happen? Yes and absolutely. Magic is never one to rest on his laurels and he loves to be part of something new and exciting. I'm not positive of the NBA rules, but I'm sure he'd have to give up his small interest in the Lakers -- I think we all know the Buss family will be running the Lake Show for many years to come -- to join another ownership group for a rival franchise.

The Davidson family has said they'd like to have a new ownership group in place before the start of the upcoming season, so the rumors, talks and discussion on who might take control and who will be involved should start heating up.

Good Morning Lakerland! Nice to see Mamba24 start us off on the right foot here.

If Magic ends up owning part of the Pistons, I could live with it. I mean come on, Magic is from Michigan and starred in College there (won an NCAA championship against Larry Bird). I'm grateful for every season Magic played for us. Yes, even the comeback when he played Power/Point Forward.

Larry Bird is with the Pacers and yet The Celts still embrace him. McHale was running the Timberwolves and they (the Celts) still embraced him. (I'm not sure how Chicago feels about MJ owning the Bobcats...but the heck with them...lol).

We can do this. It's alright if Magic moves on and owns and is involved in the running of another franchise. Magic probably has no real shot at running the Lakers and maybe this is his chance to "Be involved" at a much higher level than with the Lakers.

Michigan is home to Magic much more so than say Philidelphia is for Kobe. Kobe grew up in Italy and only lived in Philly for a few years as I understand it. I think I remember Magic's mom putting on a special dinner for the Lakers every time they would play in Detroit.

If Magic becomes involved with the Pistons, I will still love him and pull for him. That is, until they play the Lakers. I love Magic, but I am a Laker first. That being said, I can make room for Magic to pursue his dreams.

Good Morning JohnnyV how you be sir? I think you said what most of LakerNation feels. So I'll just add for the first time today, and yes I have to say it...OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!

Good morning blog fam!

I am present and LOVE Mamba's poem.

JonK, Justa and everyone else that has been "trolled". I have your backs and nothing is going to change that!

I am only posting once a day until this chaos subsides and FCM returns. If you see any more, it's not me and I would not say anything tasteless, mean-spitired, personal attack, etc. So, it's not me. I have respect for the kids!

Camp and pre-season is closer every day. Cheers all - PLG

I don't have a problem with this one. Why shouldn't Magic expand his NBA involvement? Don't expect me to become a Pistons fan, but I won't vilify Magic over this. He's always treated us fans well.

So how does this effect his status as part owner of the Lakers? Can he have a stake in multiple teams?

JR

Mamba - Very Strong!

As far as Magic goes...not much buzz in the D about him possibly becoming part owner. Like the article stated its highly unlikely.

The Pistons are in shambles right now partially due to the ownership situation...so whoever buys them will have their hands full. I hope Mr. Ilitch group wins out cuz he's a very good owner and that'll guaranteed to the team stays in Detroit

If Magic owns part of the Pistons, he would have to sell his share of the Lakers.

Mamba, good morning to you as well. Things are good for me. Hope they are the same with you. Let's get this party started!

Sweet Larry, Love your Roll call as usual but for Truth Matter I have to advice you to erase "Maroon5" from the celebrity Lakerholics fans.
In Maroon5, the only one who really, really REALLY bleeds for the team is just Adam.
Others are dragged by him on court when they wanna bend to his insanity and keep him quiet and happy - and that is something his girlfriends ALSO have to do. He broke relationships over the Lakers. Truth. Talk about a REAL obsessed man.... ;)

In case, substitute that "Mroon5" with "Adam Levine" and you might have a point (a definite point: the man is nuts over Lakers, so much that fans bring him customized fan shirts during gigs this august...) ;)

Oh... and this is my real post too. and it's so much that it's gonna be linked AGAIN on my Twitter (look what I have to do to fight idiots...).

About the topic: Magic will FOR SURE become and NBA owner at some point. I can see it before my very own eyes. I actually think he has for sure the competency and the passion.
Certainly he has the money, in partnerships, too.
I just hope all that gets directed in THE RIGHT direction, you know...

Later, gotta do some yoga.
It will help me also not build voodoo dolls for the fakers round here...
;)

Great stuff LRob - really enjoyed it. By that time in Wilt's career, he was more an all-around player and less the "force" of his earlier years. He'd pull 40 points and 20+ rebounds in the Finals on occasion, but not all the time. You could see how the young Lew was amazing right out of college (or in his sophomore year here). Used to hate the Bucks as a kid during those years (loved when we passed their winning streak record, hated they cut ours "short").

The amount of rebounds the big men of the past would tear down, makes the guys today seem like kindergartners. I think that's why I always respected Rodman & Barkley for going after the glass.
Posted by: 63 Footer | September 01, 2010 at 07:34 AM
--------------

63 Footer - you do have to factor in there were a lot more shot attempts per game in those days so there were more rebounds available. I think Hollinger or one of those guys did a study on that and used it to "prove" Kobe's 81 was more impressive than Wilt's 100.

Good morning Mamba24 & the fabulous Laker morning CRUE!!

Sure wish it was game day..... anyhoo....

POINT OF CLARIFICATION:

I didn't come up with the princess jimmy and snaquille o'meal monikers. Some unbelievably witty person did and I very expertly plagerized them. (I've got mad skilz like that). Thanks anyways, Zaira - and welcome back!!!!

I don't care if Magic puts down stakes in another team. All I want to know is what will happen with his share of the Lakers. Can he give them away to some well-deserving individual??? HEY MAGIC - choose me. Love me. PICK ME!!! LOL!

(That was my nod to Grey's Anatomy).

Alrighty - back to work. Argh. I need someone who I don't know to die and leave me all their money....

OH SWEET JESUS it looks like the Band is getting back together! Good Laker Morning to: PsychedLakerGirl, LROB, 63F ooter, Goddess, JohnnyV, Jolly Rancher.

LMAO! Good morning JustAnotherMambaFan(Head of the Mamba Clan). You don't need money you are a Lakerholic and that is a richness that will last and not fade away like gold or trinkets or silver my dear. :)

63 Footer - you do have to factor in there were a lot more shot attempts per game in those days so there were more rebounds available. I think Hollinger or one of those guys did a study on that and used it to "prove" Kobe's 81 was more impressive than Wilt's 100.

--------------------

LRob, you've hit the nail right on the head with that analysis. I also remember one of the Time's writers (or may ESPN's writers?), breaking down the number of shot attempts discrepancy in Kobe's 81 and Wilt's 100 games and correctly concluding that Kobe's game was much more difficult. However, Wilt and Kareem would typically get double the rebounds of today's centers. The shot attempt difference isn't that high. Maybe 30% higher, but not double.

It was so funny how the reporters were saying stuff like "...*only* 24 points and 10 rebounds...". Centers today make zillions off numbers like that today.

Ultimately, it is that rebounding number that keeps SnaQ out of the best ever debate. But, we really should shot-attempt adjust his numbers to honestly see just how far behind he really is.

Also, I really dig the West/Wilt feud. That is classic. It also completely explains why Jerry always, and I mean ALWAYS stuck up for Kobe. In every context, in every way, no matter what was going on. West was the first Kobe.

You guys know that I've always compared Kobe to West and not really to MJ, anyway.

Mamba, as usual, great poem!

Good Morning my blog fam and every unrecovered LAKERHOLIC!!!!

I've missed most of the drama on here, and I'm not sorry. This last stretch before the regular season is the hardest, and it's bringing out the worst in people. All the regulars here have been posting long enough to recognize when someone who isn't who they say they are posts under another name. All of the original owners of those names are smarter, have more wit, and you can just tell when it's not them. Also, people low enough to post under an already taken name tend to use bad grammar. The regulars don't.

And whoever this Hippy guy is, he can kiss my purple and gold butt. Trying to smack down Utzworld. As if.

"If Magic becomes involved with the Pistons, I will still love him and pull for him. That is, until they play the Lakers. I love Magic, but I am a Laker first. That being said, I can make room for Magic to pursue his dreams. Posted by: JohnnyV | September 01, 2010 at 07:16 AM"

JohnnyV - almost verbatim what I was going to say!!

I'm jonesin' for the regular season like crazy. Got the unrecovered Lakerholic shakes! Bring on that regular season! October, where art thou? C'mon already!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

Celtics can just eat poo, not to mention their followers. Green. I hate it.

@Zaira, A Goddess has spoken and so I must obey. Maroon5 replaced by Adam Levine. Thanks for pointing that out Zaira and you have a wonderful Lakers Morning! Carry On!

LRob - I take into account the "more shots/more rebounds," but guys just don't rebound "right" as much. Kobe (of course) does; his fundamentals are amazing. When he goes for a rebound, he GETS the rebound. He blocks out, goes high, times it right, protects the ball when he lands. Ron Ron rebounds well as well (except for the "going high" part, which... well, Ron can't do no mo').

I've always thought the 81 points was more incredible than the 100 (though nothing's more incredible than averaging 50+ pts per game during a season). I personally rank Kobe 2nd as greatest scoring force (behind Wilt), though one could argue for MJ as well. I believe that Jerry West would have averaged between 3 and 7 points per game more though with the 3pt line, as he was good from the rim on out to... well, 63 feet, so he might be just short of that conversation.

As for Magic: I think that would be great for him. I think our lives are short, and he won't be able to garner more Laker control, so why not?

FEARless:

I feel the same way about Kobe/West. I always thought there was something "Westian" about Kobe's game, more an attitude or a scent, could never put my finger on it. Kobe's the last of the "old guard" - he treats basketball with respect and desire, competitiveness and single-minded focus.

Back then the only way a player really got their name in the papers was to do something actually IN a basketball game. Now players get face-time for who they date, what they wear, when they go to the bathroom. The need to achieve is watered down, methinks. To Kobe, it seems, everything BUT basketball is trivial (not family, etc., but the other "celebrity" stuff).

63 Footer,

Don't forget, LO is a rebounders rebounder, as well. And, LO seems to really like rebounding. What a rare thing these days. There are a few others scattered around the league. But, back in the day, every team had at least two guys who "got" it. But, Jerry and Kobe rebound a LOT for shooting guards. That is becoming rarer and rarer these days.

The trend of centers becoming shooters seems to have made them forget about the rebounds. I really don't know why because you get most of your boards on the defensive end, anyway.

Imagine if Dirk rebounded like he's supposed to? And played a little D? The Mavs would have a ring already. No doubt about it.

--FEARless

Oops, you're right FEARless, Lamar really knows how to rebound. "Sorry Lamar!!!" I love watching him in Happy Hairston-mode. Yeah, just because you can shoot from the outside, why not rebound? Dirk goes sorta "limp" when you need him to do the dirty work. I think Melo could use a little "nasty" on the boards and on D to compliment his game (just not against us).

6s Footer,

I must (begrudgingly) put Wade in that category of the "Old Guard". He gets it as well. I mean last year, he carried a bunch of chumps around his neck the whole season and the playoffs. All by himself. And he's short.

Wade must have been really good, because he got one hellava Christmas present, didn't he?

--FEARless

Fie on DWade! A pox on that lad! But... he did have a great Finals that one year, and he's the only other "clutch" superstar out there (now that Tim Duncan's out of the running) who understands how to raise his game when necessary. Yes, I grudgingly will agree. Gack! Cough! Gag!

Nevertheless, I've not seen him have the work ethic to improve his game (get in shape, yes, improve game, no) like Kobe does (or as West had in his own subtle way). And now he's busy partying with the "in" crowd.

Oh Boy, ESPN 3 has USA vs Iran right now. Too bad there's no chat. Then again, I'm at work so chatting is a bit tough. Oh but wait, I'm the boss so I should just get everyone on a chat...right?

JR

Jolly Rancher: It's good to be king.

Yes...Yes it is.

USA over Iran 43-28 at the half. Iran is looking pretty good considering they haven't had much of a national team since '43.

JR

Thanks Mamba24 for the AWESOME bandwagon...We're doing great..Doesn't pre-season start here pretty soon? This seems like the longest Laker withdrawl ever. In his heart, Magic will ALWAYS be a LAKER!!

Since Dan is again writing something we Laker fans might find interesting, I thought I'd drop in and give a word of support. Thanks Dan.

Looks like USA is beating Iran..42-28 at halftime!

If he wants to have more of a controlling interest as an NBA owner this makes sense. And after the Lakers, given his childhood and college years what better franchise than the Pistons?

It seems like his interest and desires and the timing and the Pistons are all lining up. If this is what Magic wants then I wish him the best. He will still be one of the most beloved Lakers of all time, that will not change.

And if we ever meet in the finals...well that would be great, because the Lakers will be in the finals.

You know it, we know it he know's it. Glad everythings good with you NewMexicoLakerLifer. Nice to be back home and thanks.

Regarding Magic buying into the Pistons at the expense of his ownership in the Lakers, am I the only one who is outraged by this?

I mean, it's not AS bad as Magic selling his ownership in the Lakers to buy into the ownership of the Celtics, but its almost as bad. I mean, it's in the same REALM as buying into Celtics ownership. They're the fricken Pistons! I hate the Pistons. Every decent, God-fearing, purple and gold loving Lakeraholic hates the Pistons... and Magic's going to sell his ownership in the Lakers to be a PISTON'S OWNER?

WHAAAAAAAT?

Excuse me, isn't there a statue of Magic outside STAPLES CENTER? Am I missing something here?

Has Magic just got it in his head that Kobe is now/will be the Greatest Laker of All-Time and just spiritually given up on the Lakers?

I don't know, but this is all rather befuddling and unsettling for me.

" I thought I'd drop in and give a word of support. Thanks Dan."

Agreed.

Dan, let me give you a little insight into what drives Lakeraholics:

1. ANYTHING regarding the Lakers. ANYTHING. If Sasha Vujacic has decided that he likes a particular brand of socks, we're interested, but, ideally its information that is uncommon knowledge. Regurgitating information that was on Yahoo Sports a week ago is just annoying to us, because we're already aware of the information. Trust me. We are.

2. Lakers history. All of us are intimately aware of the legacy of Lakeraholicism, but most of us haven't been a fan since the George Mikan days. There are gaps in our knowledge filling in those gaps is always appreciated. That's why we like Roland Lazenby so much.

3. A good fight. (Not a bad fight. A GOOD fight.) We like to argue. Posting something controversal, but intelligently so, gives us something to argue about, but ideally in a fairly civil fashion.

4. Humor. Humor is what keeps this blog vibrant and fun. Without those qualities, our competitive instincts get the best of us and we tend to respond like a truck load of rabid wolverines infected with the rage virus and then thrown down a dry well. It's not pretty. So, keep things fun. We are self-aware of fanatical nature of our Lakers zealotry and find humor in it. It's okay for you to find humor in it too.

What Lakeraholics are not into:

1. Poor writing skills
2. A lack of intelligent insight
3. Anything that has nothing to do with the Lakers
4. Trolls

I hope this information is helpful.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

GO LAKERS!!!!

Good morning lakerholics!

Glad to see the blog up and strong!

Good morning mamba24 (my idol), justa, 63 footer, Zaira, LRob, NewMexicoLakerLifer, Jolly Rancher, wes, FEARless and last but not least...Jon K (we got your back).

We know when the post is really from Jon K, so trolls must give up.

What else? i can't wait til Blake put his hands on the ball...
Cheers.

Magic can be owner of a team, no big deal (but the Pistons????OMG...puke) if he wants.

Jon K

I can't speak for others, so I'm not sure how many people feel as you do Jon. I am a Magic Johnson fan and I just love the guy and I'm grateful for everything he gave me. He and Marcus Allen are the two guys I love and admire and can do no wrong.

As for YOU Jon K, I would like to be counted as one of your supporters/fans as well. Much like Magic, I support you without question.

Magic Phil, he of the magic skills. How are you this glorious Lakers morning sir. You are too kind sir! Yes the family does seem to have made a showing today. Very good! Carry On!

Morning, Fam. Good thread to start the day. I think that Magic Johnson has been ready to be an owner for awhile now. He was part of the group led by 24-Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov that bid on the Warriors. I don't begrudge him bidding for the Pistons. After all, he's from Michigan and I would like for the new Pistons owner to keep the team in Detroit. None of that Seattle to Oklahoma City nonsense. That was a sad day for the Sonics franchise as I recall. Anyway, Magic will always be a Laker at heart just as MJ will always be a Bull even though he owns the Bobcats now. I'm just happy that more NBA greats are choosing to get involved with NBA teams past their playing career.

Magic Phil,

I, too, can't wait 'till Blake puts a least one hand on a ball. A basketball preferably, but I fear I'd take any type of athletic ball at this point.

Withdrawals are a *itch.

JohnnyV,

Man, I love Magic too, he just seems to be acting weird recently. I mean, he picked the Celtics to win the Finals! How? How is this possible? He's Magic Fricken Johnson! I couldn't believe my ears when I heard him say that. My mind screamed, "WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MAGIC?!?!?!?"

He's the face of the franchise. He's an owner. And he picked the Celtics to win? Huh? And now he wants to buy into the Pistons at the expense of his stake in the Lakers? WHAT?

I don't know. I'm less mad at him than hurt. It's not like a Shaqesque betrayal. I'm just disappointed. I didn't think Magic was capable of such actions. I don't think Michael Cooper or James Worthy would ever act like this.

Good Morning Lakers Blog Fam,

Lovely to see the family together this morning.

Thanks to Dan Loumena for caring about us.

As for our beloved Magic: well we know he's never going to able to fully own the Lakers so he must go elsewhere to be a majority owner. So why not his home state?

But I am very curious about what happens to his 5%

Something told me it was going to be a good morning and yes it was but now...It's a Grrrrrreat Morning thanks to Mr. Gilbert Battung. How are you this wonderful Lakers Morning sir? Dang it looks like all the family decided to hold a reunion or something

I'm afraid, my fellow bloggers that we are going to have to separate Magic the player from Earvin Johnson the business man. Magic, the player, was our guy in Purple and Gold. He's the one with the statue in front of Staples center.

Earvin Johnson seems to work magic in the business world and wants to have more control as an owner of an NBA team. He's the one that we've seen on ESPN and ABC talkin' about a Boston win in the finals, not Magic.

I don't see a problem with Earvin leaving the Lakers organization, so long as he's not talkin' smack about the fans or ownership AND as long as he realizes that he's not getting any more rings in Detroit.

JR

So, one of the greatest as well as one of the most beloved Lakers of all time wants to take ownership in another team where he can play a bigger role.

Makes perfect sense to me. It's not like ownership opportunities come along very often, especially in his home state, where he grew up and where he led his college team to a championship.
Wouldn't it be just awesome to be able to do that if it were you?

If it happens, I hope he does well and leads those Pistons back into respectability, not because I like the Pistons, but so Magic can achieve success at a new endeavor.

Hmm, maybe he'll hire Jerry West as his GM, I read West is interested in an opportunity somewhere. That would be interesting.

JR,

That's it exactly: Magic Johnson (our Magic) versus Earvin Johnson (the business man). Summed up perfectly.

--JONK's vindication...
--Peace between HOBBIT and LAKERTOM...
--MAGIC saying "NO" to Piston ownership...

JR,

Your point about separating Magic the player from Earvin the business man was excellent.

Often us fans get so emotionally involved in supporting a player and/or team we tend to forget that these people have a life to live after basketball, and that they have every right to pursue whatever interests them.

DBDH!

Art - FL Laker Fan,

But then Jerry West would have to live in Detroit, which is actually an even worse place that Cleveland... and that's saying a lot.

Jon K,

Agree about living in Detroit, been there, no desire to ever go back.

Plus, it's cold there, brrr.

But then, those guys (Magic, West) live in an entirely different economic stratosphere than most of us. That may make a difference, to them.

Correction, Larry. The correct quote is...

They HATE Us Because They AIN'T Us!

Laker Lass,

I know what you mean.

Be bad enough if Magic hired West.

Imagine then in 3 years he hires Fish to be his head coach.

If Magic does it great for him. But I will state hate the Pistons.

Good to see so many regulars posting constructive things here!

Dan Loumena -

Just wanted to add thanks for understanding us...You are the only one doing a good job while MM is on vacation. We are demanding, I know, thanks for accomodating us....

Mr. Dan Loumena, thanks for rescuing your blog, if LAT editorial staff don't do something about it, this could be the beginning of the end. Please consult your legal luminaries and I would like to reiterate our "rights" as bloggers we are not public figures. We are not Luke, Mitch or Jerry Buss. Not one of us here except for Roland Lazenby are public figures therefore we don't deserve insults, prejudice and innuendos of this blog. It is the responsibility of LA Times to ensure free speech that is civil, free from hatred (federal statutes) and further defamation of character by people abusing your system of instant posting and lax enforcement in tracing the source of multiple handles.

Mamba24, I'm not dead yet and will be back in full force when season starts. Will remain on a working vacation, once in a while I try to log in to say "present".

From college to professional life, Magic has been in the center of attention so naturally, he becomes bored with success. He wants more challenges from being hiv-free individual, from coaching, from politics, from entrepreneurship, from sports analyst to network Finals analyst now he wants to be an owner. Once you reached the top, it's to come down to the base and join the multitude that is equivalent of living dead.

If I were Magic, this is what I will do at this age. I will finish my college and earn a degree as a role model to the youth who wanted to be Magic Johnson. Enjoy my family who have been loyal to me during my trial years. Write a book about my life and record the off-the-beaten path of my professional years. Lastly, try to attain inner peace and contentment with my achievements as an ambassador of basketball throughout the world. As a minority owner of the Lakers @ 5% it's equivalent to 75% ownership of the Pistons. The former has less headache and just good for my health.

Art - FL Laker Fan,

Well, it can be noted that in terms of property a person can get three times the property for half the money in the suburbs of Cleveland and Detroit. There is something to be said about that, but STILL you have to leave your house sometime, right?

THANKS DAN LOUMENA FOR ALL YOU DO – BANDWAGON
*____________________________________________________________________*
Good evening Lakers fans,
I've been keeping up with the, well, umm, lively banter today. It does appear Jon K. was attacked by a couple of commenters. I removed those comments earlier today and took note of e-mail addresses and IP addresses in case it happens again as I try to help keep the blog chugging along in Mark Medina's absence. Like you, I really miss that crazy kid. For those of you keeping it clean and on the up and up, I appreciate it. I agree with some in here that it appears people use the blog simply to attack the opinions of others. Unfortunately, you're going to get that in an open online community. Lastly, before I get back to work on several other things that need my attention, the LA Times is no longer a publicly traded company. When billionaire real-estate magnate Sam Zell took over in a heavily leveraged buyout, we went private. Our owner, Tribune Co., is currently in Chapter 11 bankrupty court trying to sort out the particulars of paying off creditors, vendors, etc. I'm sure you can Google it to get the latest details.
I've been an editor at the L.A. Times for nearly 14 years, working everything from page design and copy editing to assignment editing for our high school desk. If you've seen my byline, it's probably on the Fabulous Forum blog, to which I contribute each week. I broke into the business back in 1981 as a cub reporter in Oregon, but about 10 years into my career I was asked to move into editing roles at various newspapers in NorCal and SoCal, and as a young father the hours were a lot more conducive to raising a family than when I was a sports writer. I worked about nine years in Santa Clarita, Hayward, Oakland and Stockton in main news, primarily as a news editor and also as a Page 1 designer. When I was helping run the prep desk here at The Times, former Sports Editor Bill Dwyre asked me to get involved with the dot-com operation. Now I work primarily as a web editor, doing everything from helping with the blogs to posting stories with photos and video, etc. It's been a great ride here, although we've seen our staffing level cut in half the last 6 or 7 years. It's tough to see colleagues lose their jobs, as many of you have probably experienced. Thanks for the kudos. I've got to be really honest, I'm not filling in for Mark Medina. I'm just kind of flying past every so often between my other duties to see how you're doing with what little we're offering you. Mark does a heckuva job. Unfortunately, August is the slowest month in our office, so every staff member, and I mean every one of us, takes some vacation time. So we're really short-handed.

Zaira: Hi, never wrote to you directly but have read your poetic/funny/witty posts over time, and have always enjoyed your joyful look at life and things. In many ways you are truly the blog-goddess, you stay above the fray and your positive view on things are always refreshing.

I don't always have time to write, sometimes only have mere minutes to read but when I skim over the blog your posts (along with some other regulars) are must-reads. Had a chance to look at your personal blog, and it looks like you live life to the fullest, and bring happiness and class wherever you go. Hope you will be posting a lot more, I look forward it, your participation always raises this blog up a few notches.

Besides, you are possibly the worlds biggest Kobe fan, so gotta love that! :D

Dan Loumena

You've made some friends.

Adding my thanks for making an effort.

Here's Bynum's next season breakdown from espnla.com:
http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/10171/2010-11-roster-breakdown-andrew-bynum#more

There is an interesting perspective that he could play "80" games this year becasue he's improved his game by "15" each year. He played 65 games last season. I surely hope this trend will continue.

(09) EDWIN GUECO - Mr.

Dan, let me give you a little insight into what drives Lakeraholics:

1. ANYTHING regarding the Lakers.
2. Lakers history.
3. A good fight.
4. Humor.

Jon K - I concur. And like others have mentioned its easy to tell your post from those of trolls. No worries.

If the staffing level has been cut, why is TJ Simers still employed at LAT?

He'd be the very first guy I'd get rid of.

JR,

Your point about separating Magic the player from Earvin the business man was excellent.

Often us fans get so emotionally involved in supporting a player and/or team we tend to forget that these people have a life to live after basketball, and that they have every right to pursue whatever interests them.

Well said JR and Art. If it makes Magic happy then good for him. As long as it doesn't hurt the Lakers.

Mamba - put me on that thank you Dan bandwagon. Any man that post at 3am is alright with me. Plus he actually has dialogue with posters. Dan gets it!

What's to love about this? Magic will give up part ownership of the Lakers to be part owner of the Pistons. I don't like it. He's Magic so we have to forgive him, but this move just doesn't feel right to me.

I second the motion of Tim-4-Show...

Get rid of Simers the Laker hater...

On Magic Johnson becoming part-owner (or more) of the Pistons:

I believe this started when Magic was asked by a group looking to buy the Pistons if he would be interested in joining them, he said yes. He also said "Just like the Lakers. It's not the full (ownership). You just get a little piece. But then you are involved in the basketball, how the decisions are made."

So, Magic would be selling his 5% in the Lakers to get a slightly bigger piece of the Detroit pie - but he'd be given some say in how things are run there. Personally, I hate it, and I feel like I did when Jerry West announced he'd be leaving the Lakers front office, then going to Memphis. Magic is a Laker, through and through. His business 'empire' is L.A. based, so is he planning to move to D-Town? That is quite a BIG change of life, even if he did grow up in nearby Lansing and attended Michigan State.

I think it comes down to Magic's competitive edge coming out. Michael Jordan just bought into the Bobcats as a majority ownership group, giving him the say in personnel decisions. I think that is what Magic is trying to get, a say in player signings and trades, to be more directly involved assembling a team. I think too, this is a way he can once again match-up against MJ, I just don't see another reason he'd do this. It's his competitive nature.

But, I'm sure long-time Laker fans will remember, Magic was asked by the press in NYC if he'd like to play there one day, and he said he would love that. I think that Magic just tries to say the right thing. I think the only way that Magic would buy into the Pistons is if he's given control of the team, allowed to call the shots. If not, it just doesn't make much sense - especially business-wise.

The Lakers are a marquee team around the globe, arguably the most recognizable North American sports team on the face of the earth. The savvy businessman that Magic has got to see that, so again the only way he does that is if he is given control, and must desire the control of a team aspect of that.

Will put it bluntly this way, owning 5% of a diamond is better than owning 50% of a turd...

BTW I believe that when he was sold 5% ownership in the Lakers, it was written into the contract that Jerry Buss would have the right to buy it back if he ever sold it. I am fairly sure I remember that, but not positive. I'd be interested if anyone else remembers that. I think it may have came out in the press again when Philip Anschutz bought into the Lakers.

I think it's not a bad thing that Magic wants to get in with Detroit. In a perfect world, he would be happy just being part of the Lakers ownership, but we know that is the Buss family's demesne and will be for quite a while.

Magic is from Michigan background and I can see why the Pistons would appealing to him. There is a lot of work to be done rebuilding that organization and it is an opportunity for Magic to put his mark on a team.

I'm not offended, I know Magic will always have a great relationship with the Lakers, the Buss family, and the Laker fans, but he has something to contribute to the NBA as a whole. A good, competitive Detroit team is good for the NBA and good for basketball fans everywhere.

Don't feel betrayed by Magic anymore than you would feel betrayed by your kids for going off and starting their own families. Heck, now maybe the Detroit Pistons could be thought of as spreading the Lakers organization's quality and improving the NBA.

THE LOVE STILL WANTS THE LAKERS TO BEAT DOWN THE PISTONS AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY, BUT WILL CHEER FOR THE PISTONS TO AT LEAST WIN THE EAST IF MAGIC OWNS THE TEAM.

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE

GO LAKERS!

I suspect that Dan may very be something that the Bloggers who have run this blob before have never...ever...been:

An actual Los Angeles Lakers fan!

Dan, if you get a sec...off the record of course...please share your thoughts regarding the Boston Celtics. Inquiring Laker Nation minds want to know!

Blob...LOL! I meant BLOG! LOL @ me.

Can we do a bandwagon for Lakers Blog Patriarchy who have been impersonated? I'm on the list...I got dinged Monday.

Of course, don't get me wrong, I won't really have to go sit down and cry or anything if it doesn't happen. But I'm cool with it if that's really what Magic wants.

I can't wait to watch new Laker players in the training camp. This will be the most anticipating training camp since Marlone and Payton joined the Lakers a few years back. Any suggestion for additional players to be invited at training camp?? Who knows? The Lakers might sign the 15th player on the roster.

So, what is Sasha doing this summer?

From these photos, Sasha could end up being the best tennis player in the NBA:
