Lakers' Lamar Odom plays limited time in Team USA's win over Iran in FIBA World Championship
It didn't take long for Team USA to start blowing out Iran in the FIBA World Championship Wednesday, and it took even less time for Lakers forward Lamar Odom to find a seat on the bench for extended rest.
Odom played just 16 minutes during the USA's 88-51 victory over Iran in Istanbul, Turkey.
He finished with just two points on one-for-two shooting, three rebounds and two fouls.
"It was good to get the rest," Odom said in a phone interview. "It was good for all of our guys to play."
Odom and USA, which improved to 4-0 in Group B play, will face winless Tunisia on Thursday.
Odom had been wearing a headband in the previous games, but didn't wear one during Wednesday's game.
"I was in my warrior mode," Odom said. "It's so hot here, so that's why I've been wearing it too. I sweat so much. But today I just decided to play without it so I could let the world see my pretty face."
Odom paused for a second or two and laughed.
"I'm in Europe, so maybe I can get a modeling gig," Odom said, laughing again.

Dan- Sorry you have unfortunate team loyalties. I went to the University of Oregon and lived in SW Washington for almost eight years, and I know how dedicated Blazers fans are, and how tragically doomed to frustration they seem to be. My sympathies. Nice to see that you are a fan of NBA basketball in general as well, I admire your attitude and knowledge of the game.
PS, Simers still works for you guys? Why?

Hey phred,
One of my kids attends Oregon State University, he studies civil engineering. The apple fell far from the tree! Eugene is so much more beautiful than Corvallis, and SW Washington (minus volcanoes spewing) is lovely, too.
Here's my responses from the Magic thread:
Yes, Jon K., I've followed the Blazers since their first season. Heartbreak goes with the territory. That which does not kill you makes you stronger. Remember, the Blazers were 50-10 the year after they won the title. Had Bill Walton stayed healthy . . . then we pass on drafting Michael Jordan because we already have Clyde Drexler . . . some of the best teams to never win an NBA title played in Portland. We even tried to buy a championship and that imploded.
Hey, The Snake, I actually helped plant a vineyard near Champoeg State Park on a south-facing hillside -- our family farm was nearby -- that produces some award-winning wines to this day. I can't believe how that industry blew up in the Willamette Valley, which for those of you who don't know is very much like northern France and southern Germany.
Yes, CyberCosmicX, if the Blazers had taken Kevin Durant they'd rival the Heat now with the two best perimeter players on one team (no offense to DFish and Kobe). And maybe, Jon K, we would be the Lakers' rivals. I've already stated that all things equal, the Lakers have no peer in the West. Which is actually good for me and the LA Times!
I'm out for the afternoon, Laker-holics. Day off, errands to run, etc. Catch you all later.

Odom looks real comfortable on Team USA. He doesn't force anything, although if he wanted to he could take any one of the foreign players he's matched up against and break them down in one-on-one isolations. He's really the consummate team player, and has been the most unselfish player on the team.
That is what I love about Lamar though, his game is so smooth, he doesn't force things, he is more about sharing than getting his numbers. Every team needs a L.O. Criticize him all you want, fact is he is as important a member of any team he's played on as anyone. He hustles, rebounds, selflessly looks to make the extra pass. Seems like with Team USA, whenever he gets touches on offense it leads to easy baskets. Soon as he touches the ball, cutters go straight to the basket, shooters get set. I know that this is more of an intangible, but for those closely watching Team USA play, L.O. has been critical so far.
GO LAKERS!!!!! GO TEAM USA!!!!!

Oh yeah Dan, and those Blazers, if they stay healthy this year, just might make some noise. They are arguably as good as any team in the West if healthy, except the Lakers of course.
A 6th seed and 50 wins with all those injuries last season was something.
Unfortunately (for you), the better they do, the more we will not like them!

LOS ANGELES – Two months after the Boston Celtics lost the NBA championship to the Los Angeles Lakers, Doc Rivers was back in town, this time charged with escorting his son Austin to a prep all-star game. Such was Rivers’ luck that his weekend stay in Lakers Nation required a drive past Staples Center, site of the Celtics’ bitter Game 7 loss.
Doc Rivers nearly took a leave from coaching to watch his children compete in sports.
(Getty Images)
“It still hurts the same,” Rivers said. “That won’t go away. I had dinner with [Rajon] Rondo and ‘Baby’ [Glen Davis(notes)] in Vegas and they were talking about how much it hurts. I said, ‘I hope it hurts you for the rest of your life. It should. ’ ”. Doc further commented that "Lakers got lucky if not for Perk's injury, we had the game in total control, Kobe was a non factor and he should be thanking Ron. We will be back next year even stronger."
Posted by: Old Hippy | September 01, 2010 at 03:58 PM
Now I know that JUSTA HATER is either DFish or Eric Wright. He was making the same comments before he was banned...the first time.
Too bad they can't come up with anything new and interesting to say.
Ya know, I would love to see a healthy blazer team. Some of the best playoff series have been Lakers and Blazers. Of course they were the best because it involved the Lakers beating the Blazers and you just can't beat that...unless it's the Lakers beating the Celtics.

Kobe was a non-factor, just like in 2004 when he single handed lost the final because of his ego. Brick after BRICK, can't carry MJ jock.

Doc further commented that "Lakers got lucky if not for Perk's injury, we had the game in total control, Kobe was a non factor and he should be thanking Ron. We will be back next year even stronger."
=====
Kobe was a "non-factor" who outrebounded the Celtics' Hall of Fame power forward 15-3. I hope they somehow find their way back to the NBA Finals against us for the rubber match so it hurts 10 times as much. Like our "non-factor" didn't wear them out at all. If missing shots was all that mattered, Rondo would ride the pine. What a douche.

Against the trend I think LO's time on team USA will help the Lakers especially considering he will be coming to camp in great condition. He will then help Lakers to a fast start. He will facilitate the triangle for the new bench.

JustaLakerFan,
"Against the trend I think LO's time on team USA will help the Lakers especially considering he will be coming to camp in great condition."
I agree. Also, there's the psychological benefit, assuming we win the Gold. Lamar's spent so much time as a lower side kick (sixth man) I think he loses the initiative to be aggressive. He wins this Championship away from Kobe, it'll probably build his confidence and maybe put a bit more fire in his belly as a player. We need that.

Dan,
UPDATE: Interesting, according to Jeff Goodman, a senior basketball writer for FoxSports.com, “The Nuggets “tried like hell”, but couldn’t pry DC from the Lakers.”
With the 58th pick, the Lakers selected Derrick Caracter, Caracter averaged 14.1 points per game and grabbed 218 rebounds in 27 games as a junior.
Here’s the scouting report on Caracter, courtesy NBAdraft.net:
Huge body, with incredible strength. Long armed shotblocker and active rebounder on both ends. … Above-average shooter from middle and long range. … Similar to Walker with his array of skills, as he can shoot it from outside, dribble the ball in, and has excellent passing ability. Can grab a rebound, take the ball the length of the court, dribbling through defenders, and pull up on a dime and hit a three-pointer. Excels using his strength backing defenders in, as he did to Greg Oden at the 2004 ABCD camp.
-----------
Is that true and what did they offer in return? Would Nugs be interested in throwing Melo into deal?
Also they report DC wants to change his number from 58 to 45. Any news on why?
Posted by: JustaLakerFan | September 01, 2010 at 04:40 PM
Dan,
Here is tweet about DC.
Switching to A.C. Green’s number. Interesting move Derrick.
Twitter: Lakers roster update: rookie Derrick Caracter has decided to wear jersey # 45 instead of originally planned # 58.

Hope everyone is having a nice day.
AC Green - wow..haven't seen that name mentioned here very often. Not sure if he picked the number as a tribute to him because Kevin Ding mentioned that it might be due to Chuck Person. If caracter can have a career like AC, we are in luck. Do you guys remember that AC played on the 2000 championship team? I completely blanked that out of my memory somehow.
Odom - he definitely is the consumate teammate on the floor, does all the little things. Just wish sometimes he would be more aggressive and more selfish when he obviously has an advantage over the guy guarding him. So many times I see a big guy who is too slow to guard him and instead of taking it to the hoop, he settles for an outside jumper. Still, would never trade him - too valuable.
Seemed like a busy day with a lot of posts - seemed to drown out some of the negativity.
Lewstrs - if there's room, I'd like to be on the Mamba bus - way in the back where the cool kids hang out if possible.

AC Green's number? Way to go, DC!

I heard the most beautiful thing about AC Green, long time ago, I asked how he was so good on rebounds? Positioning? Jump? What?
And I heard: "The ball likes him..."
Posted by: Magic Phil | September 01, 2010 at 05:13 PM
Great comment from Odom;
"That's one of the beautiful things about sports," U.S. center Lamar Odom said. "If you think about the history of sports, you take people from different cultures, from different beliefs and bring them together. Sports is the one thing that can kind of bring people together and have a great atmosphere. It was great playing a game like this."

JustaLakerFan/Jolly Rancher,
Hopefully Caracter will try to be inspired by A.C. Green and that's why he choose the number considering that early scouting reports worried that Caracter might have character issues.
A good work ethic goes a long way in life.

Wow, I’m not sure who Steve Kyler is, but he seems to be an #%#(*@. Way to show some sympathy for a guy who has admitted he has a mental illness and has still reached way higher in his chosen profession than Steve Kyler.
LRob- I really doubt THE LOVE really gives a crap who wins the east. It was probably trying to be polite.
Cyber- I agree about Lamar. There were a couple of plays in the Iran game (for the few minutes he played) where he put a move on the Iranian center and went around him like he was a pile of falafel. When complaining about Lamar doing or not doing something, it helps to keep in mind the guy on the other team is usually a great NBA player who is doing everything he can to keep Lamar away from the basket.

Hey JustaLakerFan,
It's true that the Nuggets were very interested in Derrick Caracter. A lot of teams, like the Lakers, thought him to be a good gamble in the second round because of his huge upside. He's a big body with a solid mid-range game, although I saw him play twice in Summer League and I thought he put the ball on the floor too much trying to drive from the perimeter. He might have been able to do that in high school and college, but the NBA's guards and small forwards are hawks who lie in wait for big men to expose the ball on the dribble.
Here's the thing with Caracter. He attended a different high school each year while growing up in New Jersey, making two stops at St. Patrick's High. He then went to Louisville, left the univesity and lost a year in transferring to Texas El Paso. You know what they say, 'Just because you are a character doesn't mean you have character.' That's his big issue. He's been a mercenary since he hit the big-time. His talent is undeniable, his future success greatly in question.
As for Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets won't trade him anytime soon. Denver is trying to sign him to an extension, but word is Melo is going to test the free-agent market next summer. Now, if the Nuggets tank this season, maybe they'll try to move him to get some pieces to build around in the future if it appears he's done in Denver. I can't see them moving him to the Lakers, though. Although he'd be a nice fit with his superior mid-range shooting and outside-the-lane post-up game.
