How Theo Ratliff will fit in with the Lakers

Ratliff_300 Most people think that 6-foot-10 center Theo Ratliff is an upgrade off the bench from 7-foot DJ Mbenga, who really didn't get much playing time during his tenure with the Lakers. Ratliff has been primarily a defensive stopper in his 15 years in the NBA, even earning All-Star honors in 2001. He averaged more than three blocks a game six times in a seven-year run during the prime of his career. He's No. 18 all-time in blocks and tied for 11th in blocks per game. That's impressive.

Many people agree with Eric Pincus over at HoopsWorld.com that Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and Ratliff are a perfect fit for the Lakers. Blake will give them a steady floor leader off the bench with a penchant for hitting key three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Barnes is a hustle guy who can stay out of the way of the scorers and learn how to flow in the triangle offense.

Which brings us back to Ratliff. He'll back up Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol at center and power forward, which means he has the ability to play alongside both. Just think if Lamar Odom is playing small forward at the time. You could have a front line that goes 7-0, 6-10, 6-10. And very athletic at that.

But one big question remains: How much does Ratliff have left in his 37-year-old body? He hasn't played more than 50 games in a season since 2005-06. Part of it has been injuries and part is moving from team to team each season and coaches taking their time to figure out how to utilize him. Playing with the Lakers is usually a 100-game season, from exhibition play through the postseason. Does he really have enough in the tank to make a difference?

"You could have a front line that goes 7-0, 6-10, 6-10. And very athletic at that."

Um, we've had a front line that goes 7-0+, 7-0+, 6-10 for the last 3 seasons.

Ratliff is a definite upgrade over DJ, but he's going to play just about the same amount, and I would guess never with Andrew since that would put Ratliff at the 4 spot where he would be playing away from the basket more. Given his lack of a midrange jump shot or above average passing ability he's going to be limited to spot duty behind Andrew. Great signing, not so great article.

Dan Loumena,

you wrote: Which brings us back to Ratliff. He'll back up Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol at center and power forward, which means he has the ability to play alongside both. Just think if Lamar Odom is playing small forward at the time. You could have a front line that goes 7-0, 6-10, 6-10. And very athletic at that.

my response: So why would the Lakers pick up Matt Barnes if they were
planning on giving LO a lot of time at the SF?

This subject has been discussed, in a number of variations, for a long time &
has led to heated discussions/fights. We don't really want that again, do we?

So. LO seems to have his best games when he's grabbing rebounds. It
energizes the rest of his game. Moving him to a position where he'll get less
rebounds seems like a bad idea. He's a sketchy long range shooter. He
seems to be too slow to stop the faster perimeter players.

So. Why become obsessed with size? Size doesn't win. Skill wins. I think
that that front line will be incredibly inefficient offensively & defensively.
Offensively, Bynum will focus on scoring vs. running the offense.
Defensively, Bynum has not shown a commitment to hustling down to the
other end of the court.

Dec. 9, 2009 a *TALL* lineup was used and it didn't work very well or last
very long.

Putting two offensively challenged big men on the floor at the same time
as Bynum seems like .... a mistake.

A man who keeps his priorities in the right order I see! LMAO!! Good Morning LRob may I be the 1000th person to ask..LROb do you ever sleep? LOL! Carry On Sir!

But one big question remains: How much does Ratliff have left in his 37-year-old body?
--------
Love Theo the person...but skeptical on what he has left in the tank. He had a great regular season last year but fizzled badly in playoffs (2pts/1reb/0blks) per game in Orl sweep of Charlotte.

Piston fans were excited when they got Theo mid-season in 08. He did very little in the playoffs that season especially in the conference finals against Boston. His role there was similar to what we expect with LA. 4th big man (behind Sheed, Dice, Maxiell)...in Bos series he avg 10min/1pt/2reb/.5 blk.

Well LRob, we expect when things like this come up you get on the phone & give your old buddy Mitch a call and a Heads-Up before he goes thru with the deal. Lol! Good info thanks.

He's got 0-15 mpg during the 82 practice game season and 0-5 mpg for the playoffs left in the tank, which is all the Lakers need. So he can give it his all when he's on on the floor. He is a nutrition and conditioning freak, which is great! Yes, he's an upgrade over Mbenga, but not a difference maker.

Yes, Yes Mr. Rancher this is also a very good thing! But you know what there is really nothing like. Waking up and realizing you are a fan of The Greatest Freakin Team on Earth! The 16 time, 4 Dynasty Freakin NBA Champion LA Lakers. SWEET JESUS!!! There's no other feeling like it on earth!!!

I think Theo will do exactly what Phil tells him to do... and that's what we need. I'm hoping gone are the days when subs come in and freelance, letting leads go bye-bye.

Barring injuries, Theo knows how to play, has no ax to grind or contracts to sign, so he'll keep a level head for the small amounts of time (knock wood there are no injuries to give him more than that) he's in, and he'll fit in well with the defense. And defense is going to be the name of the game this year. Or that's what my feeble, coffee-less brain is telling me this morning.

Oh, and good morning. (Where are my manners?)

THANK YOU LAKERSBLOG & LAKERS NATION FAMILY! You really are some very nice, wonderful individuals. Did I pick a great family or what? And Lewstrs, Lewstrs, what can I say? Other than...Don't ever do that again! Just playing with you LEW, thank you so much sir, though what possesed you to do such a thing is beyond me. Lewstrs sir you are good people. Thanks! Carry On!

@MAGIC PHIL, OH Magic Phil, about those credentials you said you could get to help me and Justa out on Chat last night. That sounds like a very excellent idea to me. Justa was just grinning from ear to ear with the thought. So if you could do that I think we would both be very apprecitive! LOl!

Theo Ratliff is not a guy who will play a lot of minutes night in/night out. Here is what he is:

1) An insurance policy. Last year both Gasol and Bynum missed a number of games due to injury. It is normal in the NBA for guys to miss a few games every year. Last year the Lakers had no one on the bench who could really step in and play heavy minutes at center. DJ was entertaining, but couldn't carry the load. Ratliff knows how to play and can pick up 20-25 minutes of one of the 7' dudes goes down.

2) A good presence in the locker rooom and in practice. A hard working
blue collar guy who will know his role, wants a ring and will help get one in any way he can.

3) A good mentor for Bynum. Being around a guy like Ratliff who made his living playing defense and knows the tricks of the trade can only be good for Drew.

4) A guy Phil will trust in the playoffs. Foul trouble? Injuries? Just need a run of lock down defense? Theo gets the call, where DJ wouldn't.

That is Theo's role. Except for injuries, garbage time and situational Phil substitutions, I suspect we won't see him a lot. But the Lakers learned again this year that size helps win titles. It's no coincidence that the last three finals have featured LA, Boston and Orlando. The Lakers could have used another big body inside against the large and talented Celtic bigs when Bynum's minutes were limited. Now they have one.

@LRob, I agree with the the statement of how much Theo has in the tank. However, with some Laker Love, and and getting that tank filled with some Laker Championship Diesel fuel, he'll contribute enough to make it worth the acquisition.

@63 Footer listen to me very carefully, there is no time to lose man. Drive, forget the speed limit, immediately to the nearest Starbucks and give that brain some caffeine. Lol! Just playing with you sir. How are you this wonderful Laker morning? More excellent information and points. Thank you!

mamba24 - naw, I roast my own beans (and actually owned a restaurant on one of my "sabbaticals" from Hollywood where I was line chef and barista). None of that Starbucks swill for me!

Ahhhhh... first cup of the morning.

I think everything Tom Daniels said applies (he's always very on-the-money in his impressions of what's going on) about Theo. Ratliff is like a low-interest bearing savings account: it causes no problems and it's there for a rainy day.

Good morning Mamba24 & the fabulous Laker morning CRUE!

Yup - nothing like reading a roll call while sipping a latte LOL! The breakfast of champions.

Hopefully some of y'all will get on the chat today - it was dead in there last night. Had to watch Team USA put the hurt on Iran all by myself LOL!! They got the W (as everyone knew they would) so I was glad to make that sacrifice.

Anyhoo..... http://felipereis.com/lakerholic/

Whatever contribution Ratliff can provide the Lakers, it is that much more than what DJ Mbenga could. Ratliff may not have much left in his tank, but Mbenga is nothing more than a 7-footer with a pulse.

K - "Mamba24... 'Get a Life.'" Good show with Chris Elliott, way ahead of its time. Much like Mamba24.

Mamba24 - thanks for the links!

You never heard the Brian McKnight version before??? We heard that on KCAL with Joel and Stu before, during and/or after every game all season long.... It's a joy to live in SoCal let me tell you - and that's just ONE of many reasons LOL!

Carry On!

Getting Blake, Barnes and Theo is definately an off-season upgrade and success. They will be tremendous role players and we all know that all championship teams have outstanding role players that shine in the playoffs. ala - fish, horry, ariza and artest. But I am still concerned about who will provide the scoring when Kobe takes a breather. Barnes and Artest will get open looks with the attention going to Kobe but when he's not on the court can these guys create some baskets? Barnes is hussle, defense and spot up 3 pt shots, and I love this guy for his energy and intensity but he won't be able to create offensively. Blake is actually the most exciting new addition because he has the ability to playmake and make his shots. But at the end of the day the bench will fall on Lamar Odom again. When Pau is double teamed its up to Lamar to play consistent ball. He is still the key to success off the bench. I hope he understands this, that the role players are there to compliment the job for Kobe and Pau but off the bench its still up to Lamar to finally have a season where he shows up to play! Our team will be solid even if he only shows up half the time and the rest i can accept as we have been his 5pts 5 rebound games. The other half the games Lamar must play like he's got a pair and it means something to him. With a strong Lamar and a healthy Bynum, I don't think there's any doubt amongst Laker fans that we will 3-PEAT!

You never heard the Brian McKnight version before??? We heard that on KCAL with Joel and Stu before, during and/or after every game all season long.... It's a joy to live in SoCal let me tell you - and that's just ONE of many reasons LOL!Posted by: justanothermambafan | September 02, 2010 at 08:47 AM

Good morning Justanothermambafan(Head of the Mamba Clan) Never heard it dear. I put it on my Ipod and this will be the 79th time I have played it now. You notice the other link had the words to the song you said you were tryng to memorize. Aren't I nice? Oh by the way I was thinking very deeply last night and I've come to the decision that we should take Magic Phil up on the generous offer he made on Chat last night. LMAO!

We can't really depend on Ratliff to stay healthy. But when he is healthy, he'll be a good practice player just like MBenga was. And the bonus about Ratliff, if he's able to stay healthy, is that he'll be able to give us quality minutes in the playoffs.

If I was coach Phil, I would try my hardest to save Ratliff for playoff time. That will depend on Bynum and Gasol's health though. If Ratliff has to play big minutes, it's an inevitability that he will get hurt.

Go Lakers!
Go Team USA!
Get back on track Padres!

mamba24 - thinking deeply? "Deep" is a relative term though, so I'm thinking you may need to redefine it and then keep trying LOL! (BTW - why do you always leave the chat when I get on there? I'm starting to get a complex.)

BTW - why do you always leave the chat when I get on there? I'm starting to get a complex.)Posted by: justanothermambafan | September 02, 2010 at 09:02 AM

Because Justa my dear I treasure what is left of my voice box and throat dear. Lol! Acttually I get all shy and introverted being around the fabulous Justanothermambafan, and blurt out damn fool things that make little to any sense.

Jon K. just got impersonated. Again. For the 999th time. Ask any of us in the Patriarchy..."GO LAKERS" is not his signature!

Back to the main story. If nothing else, Ratliff can mentor Drew (if Drew lets him) in the areas of proper conditioning and defense. Like I've always said: Let Pau handle the finesse stuff & and let Drew be the enforcer.

Justa you could at least have told me that I mas being Mama B24! Lol!

@THE BANNER HOLDER, we all know this, we are practicing ignoring the Trolls. A couple other people were also.

There's been a lot of "who's going to score?" when the subs are in questions, and I'm thinking that with Blake, the Triangle will actually run smoothly and, in a way, EVERYONE will score (no teenage yucks here please).

Remember when Kobe was out for those five or so games and everyone stepped up and played some smooth basketball? I think Blake is going to facilitate this. He might not, but a smoothly running Triangle is all about balance, less about iso (though having a Kobe or an MJ takes it to whole new levels), so Brown won't have to go 1 on 5, Lamar can cut to the basket and cop a pass for the easy layup ("No Lamar! Don't miss that layup!"), etc.

For all the knocks on Walton, he can run the Triangle, and if Blake (who I think could be better at it) starts to flow with the offense, the Laker bench could be a balanced scoring machine.

But then, I'm only on my second cup o' joe; what do I know?

AW 63 Footer, my hero! Thanks but no need! Just ignore. Now finish roasting and start drinking! Lol!

Just sittin' here watchin' the wheels go round and round - I really love to watch them roll.

Good morning - anyone for a beer?

Mamba, you've taken Otis and Floyd off the roll call - there will be a town meeting in Mayberry tonight to discuss this.

Otis - you have inspired me! Picking the right music for the day's work always makes a difference (if I'm writing an action scene, gotta pick the action music, etc. - yesterday Rory Gallagher helped me do a whole chunk of novel), and now you've got John Lennon's piano in my head. I think I'll make it a John Lennon day of music (with much live Plastic Ono Band)! Many thanks.

Good morning everyone!

Mamba24, you are on a roll this morning and I can feel the positive energy!

I think Ratliff will be an excellent defender and a great defensive mentor for Bynum (hope Bynum recognizes what he can learn from a guy who once averaged nearly 4 blocks a game). I also doubt that he's going to get much playing time baring injuries although I wish he would be able to play 10-15 min/game to keep Bynum fresh and injury free.

My question is, what is his passing ability? He's only averaged 0.6 assist/game in his career. Don't know if he's never been called on to pass that much, never been double teamed enough to need to pass, or just a bad passer? I think the triangle works the best with a good passer in the post. Again, not going to make much of a difference if he doesn't see the floor much.

Regarding scoring from the bench. I don't think that's going to be a problem since we finally have a pass first (and actually try and get your teammates involved rather than looking for your own shot) guard in Blake. I agree that Odom will still be key, but I'm really excited to see what Blake can do with the second unit.

Have a great day and go Lakers!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Otis look under the Mamba Clan. You are wayyyy up there sir. Now call off the meeting for the Love of God man please!!! Lol!

Oh yeah, 63 Footer - creativity is.

Watch out miami got 18 players on its roster, six more and they will have two teams this season, the miami heat & miami melt.

@LakerFanInCowTown, Good morning sir. Thank you for those very kind words. I know you say them to prevent me from saying this about your post but I'm sorry I must...OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!! Now have a wonderful and glorious Lakers day and know that where ever you go the totality of Lakers Nation has your back. Now aint being a Lakerholic a good thing? I think so! LOl!

63 and M24,
I've given up waiting for beans to roast and water to pick up the flavor. I've switched to chocolate covered coffee beans. Munch up a hand full and the world goes into slow motion. Of course it only makes me think I'm going faster on my bicycle. Oh and M24, in my earlier post I should have provided the caveat "In the absence of Lakers action". Of course there's nothing better than Lakerholism!

JR

"Watch out Miami's got 18 players on its roster" - maybe they are going to attempt the famed Ulysses S. Grant Defense: just throw bodies at the enemy and wear them down with numbers.

@Jolly Rancher, Chocolate covered coffee beans...NICE!!!!

Jolly Rancher - better than rock cocaine!

Starving the Trolls once and for all. Duly noted, Mamba.

I think all the additions make the Lakers a better team this year. Now it's all up to the new players. The Lakers are very talent and they need players to understand there role. I believe Phil is the best in the business to solve the puzzel that the Lakers has. The Lakers need players that are willing to sacrify to win a championship ring. Look at Ron Ron. He's going to get a ring. Go Lakers.....

Just following your lead sir!

LRon - "Lakers three signings are to help a very depleated bench, my question is "who scores for us off the bench now? Too many defensive stoppers on this team, and Luke and Sasha are a waste of cap space and contribute nothing. Deal those two losers now."

LRon- that is exactly my point. It will still come down to Lamar. Will he play to his potential and consistently? He didn't when Kobe needed him to be Pippen, pre-Pau. He didn't when we lost to the Celtics in 08'. And he didn't the last two seasons but the Lakers still won on the backs of Kobe, Pau and great roles from Fish, Ariza and Artest. But this season we will need him. With his talents there is no reason why he shouldn't be 6th Man of the Year. I don't understand why he plays like this? Perhaps a playmaking guard like Steve Blake is the answer for Lamar, he never really had that with the Lakers. Maybe Blake can get him the ball where he is more comfortable, perhaps slashing like Amare and getting him the ball right at the right time like Nash does. Blake is no Nash but he might be the closest thing the Lakers have had since....Magic?

Tom Daniels - nice post, totally agree. Theo will get more minutes because he knows how to play off the ball on both offense and defense. We don't need a super athlete for his role. We need him. He will contribute.

Hobbitmage - size does matter. I'm not suggesting a lineup with both bynum and theo, no way that does not work. But with the except of Kobe, the Laker size was the single most imposing presence in the playoffs. Every game one matchup, oakahoma, utah, suns and the celtics was a dominant Laker win and after every one of those games the opposing teams were saying how imposing the Laker bigs were. Yes, these teams figured it out somewhat to get a couple wins but its really nice to start off a series with a Big Man slap across the opponents face. And a Win. Phil never loses after that.

Dan/L.A. Times/LRob,

"As usual, Rob makes no sense with his latest comment, though I agree that the Heat are now the Team to Beat" for the title now."

AGAIN!!! This was not written by me. It was a troll imposter. Isn't there something that can be done about this? It's really tiresome.

GO LAKERS!!!

@ Mamba24,

Maybe you should try creating a (T)Roll Call, and help us cast out the demons and send them back to the infernal depths of where they were violently and wrongly born from. Exorcize the inherent evil that lurks throughout the pristine cyberspace we call the Lakers Blog. Back, I say! Back to your troll village! Back to your incessant world of blog debauchery! Back to the land of foolishness! Back to your Mephistophelian menagerie of monstrous mayhem! Back! Back! Baaaaaaaaaaack!

...or something like that.

DBDH!

OBSERVATION RE: TROLLS

THE IRONY OF IT IS, utzworld - the BANNER HOLDER has spent his entire morning obsessed with trolls discussion, is this counter productive chatter...

May Allaha bless you!

lone star laker fan,

I'm not testy with our team's chances. If you knew me, you'd know I bleed purple and gold. Unfortunately, sick trolls like to try and defame my character, which sucks.

Salutations, James Edwards!

What up, John Salley!

Stay classy, Jon K. We know who's who, and what's what.

DBDH!

@DBDH, GOOD LIST!! And good advice!

You know what they say...IMITATION is the SINCEREST form of flattery. :)

Theo Ratliff will be just fine.

He'll be a fine defensive mentor to Andrew Bynum.

He is The Mineral Man after all.

GO LAKERS!!!

Hey Mamba24,

I'm good but graduate school is kicking my butt. Only 2 semesters to go and I'm done! Thanks for asking! I read the blog at least once per day, but I don't always have time to respond.

Sorry to hear that Laker Tom let the vitriol of some the posts get to him so much so that he left the blog. I hope it's only temporary.

I'm excited to see how great our team is going to be when they're clicking on all cylinders this season. I have a feeling they're gonna to be better than even the most die hard Laker fan can imagine. This is going to a Laker's season for the ages!

It is October yet?!!!

Gooooooooooo Lakers!

I meant is it October yet?!!!

Good morning Jon K. my brother. I see you are starting out in fine form sir. Hopefully Theo will be a good mentor to Andrew. I still wish Kobe could have gotten him to work with The Dream but I think this will be his breakout year since he learned to play under pain. Now tell the truth JOn K. you slipped him some Dit dar Jaw during the playoffs when nobody was looking didn't you? Lol! Stay strong bro!

@FAN OF THE MAMBA, 2 semesters? HALLELUJAH!! You can do that standing on your head! Lol! That is really great news!Yeah, as LakerTom said and I believe it, this is going to be a season for the ages and I'm going to record every single game Lol! October will be here before you know it but...Books first, games second. Unless of course it's the playoff? Lol! Take bro. great news there, I Love it!!!!!!

mamba24,

Here's what I do/don't understand: Can't Kobe now just teach Andrew Bynum The Dream Shake now that it has been taught to him by Hakeem? Or is there some secret agreement between Hakeem and Kobe that states he's not allowed to pass on the knowledge without Hakeem's approval?

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

I think Ratliff will do just fine in the limited role he will be asked to play, i.e. good low post defense in limited minutes. I really like the Steve Blake signing, solid defense, great passing, great shot and he knows how to play the game. Think Steve Kerr for the Bulls. The Matt Barnes signing is also a good one as long as he doesn't go acting a fool. Don't get me wrong I've been a fan since his U.C.L.A. days but sometimes he acts like too much of a hard *^@ and I hope it won't be a distraction, but for some reason those things don't happen when a guy comes to a Phil Jackson coached team so it should be O.K. Overall this team got tougher than the last 2 championship teams.

"he's going to be limited to spot duty behind Andrew..."

that's assuming bynum can remain healthy - and i hope he does - but i have a feeling theo will be providing a lot more than just "spot duty." GO LAKERS!!

Here's what I do/don't understand: Can't Kobe now just teach Andrew Bynum The Dream Shake now that it has been taught to him by Hakeem? LMAO!! Freakin Excellent!!! I had never ever thought of that!! OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!

andrew will blow out a knee or two again and if he had a 3rd knee, that would go out too if he attempted the "dream shake" and kobe knows it! kobe knows what he's doing.

I pick the Lakers.

Mayberry town hall meeting cancelled.

Mamba24.. I think I was to late for the Love Ya Bus, but you know that I am a Fan of the Mamba. You guys are on a roll this morning. Love It!! Oct. can't come fast enough:)

You got it right the first time! Lol!

Good morning lakerholics,

@mamba24 - I've listen "I Love LA" 69 times, so I'm catching up w/ you, sir. Oh, I'm getting my VMC (Virtual Minister Certificate), so get ready and remember: You can't see the bridge on that day.

Now the article: Theo is old, but he will wear the Magic Png Jersey, the famous jersey that makes you play like a champ, so I'm not worry about it. He will rock.

Good morning Lakers faithful,

New day, new person grabbing everyone's handles and getting carried away. I'm glad to see you took this trolling light heatedly.

So, a new day for Dan, a new blocked IP on the Lakers blog list. It's like I'm Theo Ratliff or something.

Some fine comments regarding the post. I see some of you aren't too worried about Theo's minutes, that you think he'll provide the necessary effort and defense when called upon. That Lamar Odom will still need to play a lot of power forward, etc.

And, of course, the Lakers community opens the day with some swapping of videos. Just to once again date myself, I remember going to a theater in downtown Portland as a teenager and seeing tripleheader movies featuring Bruce Lee and a very boyish Jackie Chan.

Carry on, Laker-holics.
