Shaquille O'Neal challenges Jim Rome to a fight via Twitter

Shaq

Wednesday night via Twitter the newest Boston Celtic, Shaquille O'Neal, challenged radio talk show host Jim Rome to a fight.

Clearly annoyed when Rome said on his TV show "Rome is Burning" that Danny Ainge would be making a mistake by signing the former Laker for the veteran's minimum of $1.4 million (the deal hadn't been signed yet when Rome taped his show), O'Neal tweeted that if he lost a boxing match with Rome that he would donate his entire salary to charity.

What hit The_Real_Shaq the hardest? Probably not the part where Rome declared that the 15-time all-star and owner of four NBA championship rings hadn't lived up to the expectations people had of his career. But it's hard not to think it didn't sting when the ESPN host claimed that Shaq wasn't as professional and as committed to his body as a former Laker teammate. "You never approached the game with the dedication and discipline of Kobe Bryant,"  Rome said.

"Jim Rome, I am happy with my career and the legacy that I have left behind, obviously u r not happy wit yur legacy I 4got u have no legacy," Shaq retorted.

Jimrome

Soon after he invited Rome to the fight. "And forget the back and forth jim rome, I challenge u to a boxing match, live at espn studios, show the world if u can bak up the tuff talk."

Shaq quickly tweeted something that would make English teachers everywhere cringe, but the spirit of the message was quite clear: "If u wanna see shaq box jim rome live on espn. I do if he wins ill donate my salary to a charity of his choice."

Rome emerged from The Jungle and replied to the seven-foot, 300+ pounder as one would expect, "@THE_REAL_SHAQ  For 8 mill, maybe, but I'm not getting my face caved in for the veteran's minimum. & you are a little out of my weight class."

The tweets volleyed back and forth for a few more rounds until the center quoted himself and then linked to a video of Rome being attacked by NFL quarterback Jim Everett (then of the Saints) after Rome addressed Everett as "Chris" in reference to an opinion the talk show host had that Everett was playing football like a girl, namely tennis star Chris Evert.

"You just threw the Everett card? So tired. So easy. So boring. What happened to you? Where's the Big Aristotle?" Rome asked. And the tweets stopped.

While it's yet to be seen whether Shaquille O'Neal can help the Celtics get past the Heat in the East, he's responsible for one mild miracle -- the ability to bring, with a few sloppy keystrokes, Jim Rome back to the national spotlight.

It's your life.
This is you.
What do you do? Posted by: Art - FL Lakers Fan | August 05, 2010 at 07:33 AM

Art, I love your posts most of the time, but you blew this one. Here's what I would do, since you asked:

1) I'd check my bank account and note that I've been paid over $20,000,000 a year for a lot of years from the last 4 teams I played for, then I'd get down on my big fat knees and thank The Really Big Guy Upstairs for such a blessing.
2) I'd call a news conference and announce my retirement in a short, classy statement, then I'd answer any and all questions from the press, humbly.
3) I'd end by thanking every organization and every key player I played with, with special thanks to Dr. Jerry Buss and Kobe Bryant for the best years of my life.
4) Smile big, and say "Thanks, that's all."

It's nice to see a Loyal Laker taking less money to stay with THE BEST TEAM in the NBA. Posted by: NewMexicoLakerLifer | August 05, 2010 at 08:50 AM

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!

This email was accidentally sent to me from the NBA. Thought I would pass it on to you....

From the office of David Stern:

Dear Bennett Salvatore,

I wanted to personally thank you for a job well done last year.

Will be rewarding you with a prime time assignment on Xmas Day.

Miami Heat/LA Lakers

It is vital that the game is called fairly according to NBA/Stern rules.

Please do your best in making sure Wade and James get to the line for the correct amount of times. (20-30 times each should be sufficient.)

DO NOT let that guy on the Lakers disrespect the NBA by complaining when Wade flops and draws the offensive foul. I won't tolerate anyone, especially him, disrespect my controlling the outcome of this game.

Remember, this is a national spotlight for us. The whole country will be watching. I know I can count on you to do your part as you have usually done in the past.

Yours truly,

David Stern

PS. Your usual thirty pieces of silver is in the mail

An interesting note about being 38 & playing for 1.5 million per year ...

10 % of 20 million dollars is 2 million dollars.

Shaq is playing ~ 1 yr's worth of a low interest rate.
Given that the mortgage rate is ~ 5% right now ...
Shaq is playing for his house note.

How the mighty have fallen ...

Corner J,

Good response, thanks.
You are a classier guy than Shaq, that's for sure.

LOL Fatty - classic!

At first... I wanted CELTICS to clobber the heat. NOW... I hope Miami Eats them up and vomits them out to third place. What disgust that Shaq has caused himself. It's no better than Lebron. If you can't beat them, you join them. Their all wimps. Get your own teams!

Wow...it took the signing of Shaq to bring the Losstown Ceptics back to their chest pumping, premature celebratory ways on this Blog. Once again, a revelation of their TRUE character: Chicken Littles during hard times...jock-riding bandwagonners the rest of the time.

I oughtta know! :)

I really don't think any of you morons understand the value Shaq had on the Lakers, but his value isn't that much greater than Kobes. When they played together, it was Kobe who led the Lakers in assist for almost every year during that time. It was Kobe of all the highlight reels passing to the big fella. It was Kobe at the FT line when Shaq was on the bench or down at the other nd of the court to prevent from being fouled and going to the line. It was Kobes drive and dedication that good or bad forced his teammates to bring it, not Shaq. In addition, a center is only as good as the outside players surrounding him, beause others have to give him the ball; others have to put him in poisition to be successful, well unless you're Kareem. In any event, these two players and other greats, always and historically need one other superstar to get them over the top; to get them over the top. It doesnt lessens eithers career, its a team sport. What about that people don't understand? Has Phil scored a point while collecting any of his rings, yet he get's a great deal of credit; even though he has had the best talent any coach would cut thier right arm to obtain. SO why doesn't Kobe get any credit? If its not Kobe hasn't won with Shaq; its Kobe hasn't won without Pau.; If its not Kobe has not won without Phil, its Kobe needed Phil to win. Kobe, Kobe, Kobe. After 14 years. Breaking a ton of records in the process. Collecting 5 NBA rings; Rebuilt his team; Rebuilt his image; Has sold more jerseys for the NBA than LeBron for the last 7 years. Scorced a Dirk led team by himself; The most points by a player in 30 years with 81, and yet, its never him. its never just Kobe. 5 consecutive 50 points games. When MJ did it, it was greatness. Kobe, Its well he shot too much; he didn't trust his teammates, etc., etc. When Kobe goes to the HOF I bet he will thank his coaches; the players on his team; the legends before him and those who stuck by him; He wil not ridicule them for his own glory. HE will not spit in the face of all those that helped shaped the legend, like Mj did.

utzworld - you're a shining star on here. Don't let the trolls & haters take place in your thinking.

Real manly move there shaq.. He's a 7'1 500 lbs ogre challenging a 5'7" 100 lbs hobbit to a fight.

And yes justa.. Haha..We need someone with some real photoshop skills goin to work ASAP.. Just need a big shaq photo with a celtic jersey and some big donkeyass shrek ears. This I would love to see. Any volunteers?

kmcdowell - OH SNAP!! Thank you. Another voice for Kobe and his greatness, instead of the usual lack of respect he normally receives from so many. (and you know who you are)

The only thing you forgot to add was than when Kobe's giving his thank you speeches, he won't be adding how sorry he feels for his kids having to live up to so much greatness.

yello - zaira's bf may be up for it. We'll have to ask her when she's back on here after her summer vacay....

CLASSIC!!

@charles.. LoL. I think that deserved the motumbo finger

@Joseph T.,

Great post. Did you happen to notice that the only people you listed who did both, play both Batman and Robin and win either way are Kareem and Kobe? Well, actually, we must add Snaq. He was definitely Robin to Wade's Batman. That is a particular skill that I don't think we give enough credit for.

How about a guy who can be ANYONE's Robin? Like Horry?

Just a thought...

What you FAIL to realize is that Shaq isn't playing for MONEY, he's got plenty of that (he made more in a day that you, your WHOLE FAMILY, and the entire clan of relatives down south could make in a 100 years, LITERALLY). He's playing FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.

I'm sure that's not something all of the spineless, front-running, nutgging BANDWAGON pseudo-fans could understand. Afterall, "i cant believe hes not goind to a champonship tean frum last yaer.. kobe wud nevva do dat!!!"

Uncle Sam's finger...

The foam finger....

Austin Powers' finger...

What? We're not doing famous fingers?

Bucknus - Shraq playing for the love of the game?

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

I'm quite sure you've officially lost it.

He's playing for love of the spotlight, my friend.

Buckus Toothnail:

YOU WROTE:

He's playing FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.

Response:

Or is it keeping up with the Joneses aka Kobe

Hellooooo my fellow Lakerholics...How you doin' Mamba?

Been so busy at work that I haven't had time to get on here but I'll tell you that the Shaq signing has created as much buzz as the asian longhorned beetle created around here....NONE.

I've heard a few idiot homers yapping about the rebounds and presence in the middle yada yada but for the most part, everyone just feels that the average age on the team is 40.

----------------

He is playing so he can pay his divorce lawyer...

Buckus wrote: What you FAIL to realize is that Shaq isn't playing for MONEY, he's got plenty of that (he made more in a day that you, your WHOLE FAMILY, and the entire clan of relatives down south could make in a 100 years, LITERALLY). He's playing FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.

my response: Actually, he's not playing for love of the game. He's playing
for his legacy. Maybe it sounds arrogant for me to say that, so let me flesh
it out....

Love of the Game is:

Coming to camp in shape.
Hustling in regular season && playoff season.
Playing defense and offense.
Increasing your game.
Studying the past greats for tips.

Playing for money is:

Asking for a raise when you haven't worked for it.
Screaming at the owner about $$ on a nationally televised event.
Going to which ever team is paying the most $$.

If you disagree with my definitions, please give me yours.

Playing for legacy is:

After having won 3 championships as primary & 1 as secondary he's now
trying to win 1 or 2 more as bench warmer, so that we will consider him
the most dominant center ever.

Having as many or more rings than that guy you dissed and left, so you
wouldn't have to share the glory.

To be honest, I don't think there's anything wrong with playing for any
of the above motivations. Only playing for the love of the game should get
your jersey retired.

Shaq is a bball whore. Enough.
This is GOOD news (and maybe old, sorry), but it sounds like Shannon will sign today.
http://tiny.cc/pr93q

Hahahaha "playing for the love of the game"...that's the best one I've heard yet. What he's trying to do is have more rings than Kobe when all is said and done.

MeQuit got to love the Big Ogre, Shraq, with this current antic. After not being able to be the bigger man and thank Cleveland for those years that they supported him despite how they reacted afterwards, and only thank Akron, I was expecting a little more drama and bad mouthing against MeQuit. But now, the attention shifts to Shraq with this Rome crap instead. Great! Or maybe MeQuit is mad at Shraq for taking center stage. They're both attention ho anyway. I don't care about them. I only care about my Lakers. Word is, Shannon Brown might announce today that he will sign a multi-year contract to return to the Lakers. This is according to his agent. Check out the NY Post for the article.

yawn.

yes, Shaq was a great Laker, but that's over now. some guys go to another team, and it's just the bball business, and they'll always be a Laker in the fan's and their own heart. Byron Scott is an example of this player, so is AC Green and DFisher. some guys leave the Lakers, and cut the cord. Ced Ceballos, anyone?(yeah, i loved Cedrick before he let the team down)

Shaq is in the latter category. i LOVED him when he was here. i'm done with him now. the problems between he and Kobe were HIS fault. guys like Shaq always look like the good guy at first, because of charm. but guys like Shaq are often dirty dealers behind the scenes. the Kobe/Shaq days were full of nonsense drama like this Rome thing. Shaq's love for drama was taken to the point that the team had to be broken up, when Shaq left, he dissed Kupchak, Buss AND the fans. Shaq DEMANDED the trade and was upset when he got it, because the trade demand was simply another manipulation.

now, Shaq can't get over the fact that his bad attitude leaves him with not home to comfortably retire into. instead, he's a merc getting one more sad payday, trying to ruin the chances of the team he left so long ago.

LA Times, it's sad that this is the best topic that you can come up with, a lame publicity stunt on twitter....

Fuck shaq. Let him die in green. Your forum blue and champion gold colors have been revoked. Jim rome is more of a laker than shaq right now. The ultimate sin shaq. You were not a role player here. You just burned it forever with this town. Even though we did not want you back. You are a n idiot if you think we tried to pursue shaq. Shaq is locker room and team cancer. The only reason he signed with the celtics is because no one wanted him. Desperate but I do not know who is more desperate, the celtics or shaq. If I try and picture what a love child produced from reds loins looks like, its an absolutely hideous creature that would have been smothered in the 1960s. Any children he does have are half troll. His daughter is a pretty handsome dude. You can take shaq and shove him up your ass, reds abomination. How are the golden girls gonna react when shaq says "you know what, i'm just gonna go home for 3 months and i will be back in April for the start of the playoffs." Then proceed to get exposed on the defensive end and annnihilate any continuity offensively.

If Wilt was the Big Dipper, Shaq is now the Big Diaper. Why?

1) He's almost old enough to need one
2) He's a big, attention starved baby
3) He's full of crap and hot air
4) He makes people want to vomit
5) He's getting tossed in with the rest of the trash (the Celtics)

There you have it. Shaq is now the Big Diaper.

btw-if you don't think that the problems between Shaq and Kobe were mostly Shaq's doing, i point to the present team. there is NO drama. Kobe only makes drama when he has a team that won't compete. the friction with Shaq was always acknowledged to be about competition and work ethic. Shaq was unprofessional enough, despite prodigious talent, to take neener! neener! neener! to the point of disfuntion.

"he's got plenty of that (he made more in a day that you, your WHOLE FAMILY, and the entire clan of relatives down south could make in a 100 years, LITERALLY"

Since I'm supposed to take this literally, let's do just that.
Let's assume no inflation for a century. Let's assume life spans over 100 years. Let's assume everyone in the family is at poverty income of 20k/yr. Let's assume a small "clan" in the south of 10.
10*20k = 200k/yr. 200k/yr * 100 yrs = 20 million

I doubt that Shaq has ever made 20 million for a DAY's hard work. He obviously made that for a year's of talent with a smidgen of work, but not a day.

Literal hypothetical = FAIL

The other aspects of the argument are, well, suspect. "Plenty of money" is subjective to his lifestyle. Relative to our lifestyle he has tons of dough even after losing half of it to divorce.

Just poking my head in here before I get ready for work, but I have one question:

Since when was this whole "twit" thing news-worthy? Honestly, why is it that popular? It's essentially just text messaging online.

I'll take something more new- worthy please for the next thread.

Ended up here because of a search for this story. And jeez, you Lakers fans are really stupid. Shaq was one of the most dominant forces in NBA history from '00-'02. He would've won a ring every year from '97-'06 with any other star shooting guard in the NBA. He was that dominant. Kobe's selfishness cost you multiple rings, especially in the '04 Finals. Now Kobe has matured into more of a team player now, but get real with this "top 5" ever talk for Kobe. He's possibly not even top 20 all-time. You may like the accused rapist better than Shaq, but facts are facts. Shaq has 3 Finals MVPs. Kobe has 2 Finals MVPs and really only deserved 1. He was absolutely atrocious in the Finals vs. the Celtics. He choked in game 7. He was saved by the real Finals MVP, Pau Gasol, the cheating refs and Kendrick Perkins' injury leaving the Celtics unable to rebound. The Lakers were lucky to win the '09 Finals because Orlando gave it away with missed FTs and layups and Orlando wouldn't have even been there without KG's knee injury. Bottom line is Shaq is one of the top 10 players in the history of the NBA. He was the best big man of his era and one of the most dominant players ever at his height. Check the stats. Kobe is one of the top 20-25 players ever and is not the best wing player of his era. Wade is better. LeBron is better. The difference is Wade and LeBron couldn't shoot 6-24 in the biggest game of their lives or shoot 45% every year and still win. Now they can. And they'll win over and over again. A few years from now and nobody will remember Kobe except as the guy who won a couple rings as a lead player during a down period in the NBA when there were no elite teams.

Posted by: kmcdowell | August 05, 2010 at 09:12 AM

It's fine to dislike Shaq but stop revising history to make it Kobe less bad Shaq more bad in those days.

Yes Shaq had his crap that he was responsible for. To say that it was more Kobe's team than Shaq's? They both needed each other. In fact Shaq had a better winning % with Kobe out then with Kobe in and Shaq out. Kobe had his faults just as much as Shaq's did.

Shaq deserves most of the blows coming here and him signing with the Celtics make it even more wanting to beat the Celtics again rather than Miami. That being said revising history is worst than anything Shaq did. One person said that it was Shaq's fault in 2004 that he shot 63% instead of letting Kobe shoot 38% in that series.

It's fine to belittle Shaq but not to the point of revising history.

The Knicks proved to be smoke and mirrors and nothing else. Where was their supposed 4 Mil. dollar contract offer to Shannon. The best they could do was 2.7 M for one year.

Does that mean that the Lakers will sign him for less than that to a 3 or 4 year contract? Does anyone have the latest news on this. It sure seems it has taken a long time to sign Shannon.

What's all the talk about Shaq? Did I miss something newsworthy. I'd rather talk about current Laker players, and not about the Big Has Been.

Well, ten rounds between Shaq and Jim Rome. Make that about 30 seconds in the first round til Rome goes down. But it would make a lot of money on Pay Per View. My vote for emcee: Ron Artest.

Ron Ron guest hosted TMZ on Wednesday. (Does anyone have a clip? I'd love to see that, too.)

For all those calling people like me morons for not wanting Shaq's jersey to hang in the rafters, consider this. He might still be a Laker if he'd found a way to co-exist with Kobe, and not been too full of himself. Kobe was just a kid when Shaq went out of his way to throw his weight around, challenging the Mamba, the coach, and the owner at every opportunity.

Shaq's role in those three championships is indisputable. That's not where the argument lies. If it did, it would be a losing one.

But Shaq needs to take responsibility for how his career is ending. He alone is the reason that the vote to retire him as a Laker is such a source of controversy. Shaq and LeBron are in the same category. Gifted athletes who behave badly. For me, that's a deal-breaker.

"He would've won a ring every year from '97-'06 with any other star shooting guard in the NBA."

Then why didn't he?

Eddie Jones & Wade = only 1 title in that time.

Jim Rome said it best, "What happened to you" Shaq? Now your a Celtic and you're down on Jim Rome's level challenging little dudes to fights. Shaq has reached a new low.

Karma has bit him in the ass. I think he now knows what Kobe's ass tastes like, Phil's, Jerry Buss', Jeannie Buss', all the Buss', Fisher's. Shaq knows what all those asses taste like.

He needs to retire already instead of holding these old grudges. I'll forgive you Shaq. You deserve your jersey to be in the Staples Center rafters.

Go Lakers!

I still love how this so-called "longtime-Lakers-fan-since-Wilt-season-ticket-holder" Buckus Toothnail or whatever his handle is, gets by every single day calling out the loyal fans, the team itself, being overly optimistic about the opposing team, eventhough the Lakers could not possibly be any deeper than they are right now given what Mr. Kupchak has to work with in the off-season, and STILL has the gall and audacity to call himself a tried-and-true Laker fan.

What do you guys think?

Am I just crazy or am I living in a place replete with fairies, Shamrocks, closet-Leprechauns and clover-jersey-wearing C's fans. I saw this pink-lipstick-wearing a$$-clown posting on the Shaquile O'Neal news-wire LATimes piece gloating over how the C's would have won the series with Perkins and judging by his brash logic swept us with a 100% healthy Bynum. Last I heard Andrew was also injured during said series.

Shaq's a bully.

I tell you what. If Jim Rome wants me to take his place in the boxing match, I will. I'm serious, punk.

GO LAKERS!!!

On the anniversay of the death of the great Chick Hearn today...I wonder what he would say about this whole Shaq soap opera...

Using his own "Chickisms", I think this is what he would of said:

"The good lord and four disciples couldn't beat the Lakers tonight" so the rest of the league has scrambled to match up to the Lakers...

Lakers "They're like refried beans on the stove--they're always hot"... So of course Shaq wants to come back...

But since "The mustard's off the Hot-dog" the Lakers did not want his services again...

Why? "He couldn't guard his suitcase at the train station" and his free throws..."Didn't draw iron"...and, "My grandmother could guard him, and she can't go to her left"

So Mitch told him, "He has two choices, slim and none (and Slim just left town)"...and sent him away..."Sends it back air-mail special."

Shaq knew "it was shot a prayer, but it wasn't answered (even on Sunday)." To make matters worse, he was "Caught with his hand in the cookie jar" now Shaq is in a ugly divorce, and his lawyer swears "If he hit his wife that hard, she wouldn't even call the police.

Which brings us to the big issue of Shaq's jersey being retired at Staples...Dr. Buss is on the record saying..."No harm, no foul, no blood, no ambulance"...

But unfortunately Laker Nation and the fans "since Hector was a pup" disagrees, and if it were to happen...Shaq night would be "If there's really 18,000 here tonight, a lot of them are dressed like seats.

I sure MISS Chick, and I don't miss Shaq...and I'm sure Chick finds all this amusing...but I know how proud he is of this current team...I can hear it now, in my head...

Is that right? So you say shaq was the dominant center from 2000 - 20002? Here that Laker fans? This guy is really letting us in on some insider knowledge. Thanks man! Thanks!

The problem is, you talk like you just discovered it when most of us were there. I remember when shaq came and didnt deliver until Phil jackson arrived. Like dude said above, he couldnt win with alls star guard eddie jones. He couldnt win with 3 all stars. He only won 1 with wade and played with a great small forward and won nothing. Man your insulting. Talk about shyte and its obvious you know nothing about the situation. Go wiki some more history since your new to this. I watched shaq play every minute of every year he was here. You are obviously not qualified to say shit on here.

From Twitter

ramonashelburne: Shannon Brown has agreed to a two-year, $4.6 million deal with the Lakers. Link coming shortly.

I wonder how motivated Shaq will be to lose weight for the vets minimum. The Celtics might get the 350 lb version of Shaq come preseason.

Hey Celtics, Mbenga is still available for a reasonable price, and he has more rings than KG, Pierce, and Allen. You can also get Ammo for a cheap discount also.

Jamie Sweet,

Funny that you bring up Kobe being paired with an elite big man as I don't recall Kobe winning any rings with Kwame. It wasn't until Pau came along that Kobe won another ring and didn't bail for some other city. To bring that point up only serves to augment my argument that Kobe wouldn't have won anything without Shaq.

Huh? you are comparing Kwame in the same level of Lebron and Hardaway? How can anyone win with kwame? Are u serious! Shaq should have won one with Paennny and one with lebron, but he did not. Kobe is consistent winnining when paired with an elite big man. Gasol even got better when paired with Kobe. Shaq won in Kobe because Kobe made Shaq better and useful. Who made the pass to Shaq that finish with a dunk in the FINALS and went to ESPN higlights for years?

Shannon gets 2 years, $4.6 million from Lakers.

Over the past 3 seasons, the Lakers have played hardball and it has seriously paid off. This is a very, very reasonable rate for the Lakers. Tip of the hat to Mitch, once again.

Mitch is the master negotiator, once again. Shannon didn't even get enough extra to even pay for his agent in what is essentially a one-year deal like the one he opted out of.

GO LAKERS!!!!

Hey folks, update, SB makes it official, returning to the fold, and with the reported contract, I don't think Sasha is getting moved to make room for him, here's the article from probasketballtalk

We said it was coming last night and now it's official -- Shannon Brown will stay a Laker.

Brown will sign a two-year deal with the Lakers, the first year for $2.2 million and the second a player option for $2.4 million, according to Chris Tomasson at FanHouse, who spoke with Brown's agent Mark Bartelstein.

Brown opted out of a $2.1 million deal for next year, but could not get more out of the Lakers. He could get a little more, $2.7 million, out of the Knicks and that would have come with more minutes and a much larger role on the team, maybe even starting. In Los Angeles, Brown got 20 minutes a game playing behind Kobe, something that likely would continue.

But the Lakers have the rings.

"The lure of the Lakers was too great,'' said Bartelstein, whose client had been looked at strongly by New York. "He didn't want to look back and not have the chance to go for a third straight championship.''

This is a good signing for a Lakers team that is talented but getting older, and is not as athletic as some of its main competition. Brown certainly brings youth and athleticism, plus a few high-flying dunks back to Los Angeles.

Thank God that Shannon is back.

I needed some good Laker news after feeling like I've bathed in fecal matter upon hearing that Shaq is a Celtic. I feel nauseous the more I think about it.

GO LAKERS!!!!

Whoever writes kwame brown with the words elite, Kobe, Pau and snaq in the same paragraph is absolutely brain dead.

RIP Chick. Forgot about Chickee baby. It seems when he passed the Laker empire almost fell with him for a while. He must be very proud of this team right now.

" Kobe yo-yoing up and down, here comes shaq, ohhh Kobe puts him in the popcorn machine, SLAAAAAAM DUNK!" - Chick Hearn calling games from heaven

Time for a Shannon Brown thread, guys.

GO LAKERS!!!

he's responsible for one mild miracle -- the ability to bring, with a few sloppy keystrokes, Jim Rome back to the national spotlight.
lol

I can't stand Rome, he's a tool frat boy!

Retire Shaqs Number
He did a lot more for our franchise then Wilt did.
What do we play for?

Actually Barnes and fiance didn't sign on for the second season...they said it was too negative and too much drama.

Matt Barnes actually sid that?...LMAO!!!

Yep Mamba - read an article where Barnes and fiance said they thought show would be more positive and show that these women do more than just shop, party...etc. Barnes fiance has a degree and she said thought the show would focus on how the "wives" are educated and have careers outside of their NBA men.

It's easy to play hardball when you're repeat champs with a world-class coach and all-star staff. Everybody wants to play for a winning team so it's easy to get good bargains (ala Ron Artest).

You know what's funny though..Shannon Brown is making more money than Shaq. Hahahahahahaha

LEWSTRS --

Beautiful post.

With a nod to Bob Hope, "Thanks for the Memories" about old Golden Throat, Francis 'Chick' Hearn.

In the Lakers soundtrack of my memories, Chick is the only voice I hear. I can vividly imagine how he would have broadcast last season's 15th title, but even more, I imagine how excited he would have been to broadcast Game 7 this year. It would have been epic.

I not only miss Chick, I miss his partnership with Stu Lanz. Chick-n-Stu...Chicken Stew...was my favorite Lakers dish :-)

P & G R

Who cares about Shaq! Shannon Brown signed for 2 years!! More dunks for everyone!!

Now it's time for signing Ebanks and Caracter. All set to go for 3! Mitch is da man!!!

If Shaq never played with a KOBE BRYANT, Shaq would only have ONE RING in his FINGER. While Kobe at age 22, 23 and 24 could have had Vlade Divac, Elden Campbell, Robert Horry, Rick Fox, Eddie Jones, Nick Van Excel and Derel Fisher with Phil Jackson and still win a championship. Kobe did not need Shaq, Shaq NEEDED a KOBE BRAYNT.

First, thank you for identifying yourself as the 'elder", and secondly, all this while I thought that you were some disturbed teenage poster, pf course this was based on content of your posts. What do I know..

I am perclempt....coffee tolk

LOL. My reference to Ruffin and the Temps was simply a comparison to when Shaq, during his now infamous rap lyrics, that Kobe couldn't win a title without him and slammed Kobe by asking him how my @** taste to how in the Temptations movie, David Ruffin stated that the Temptations couldn't make it without him. Fortunately, both Shaq and Ruffin were proven to be wrong. Loved them both, but pride and ego got in the way. Kobe is still winning titles with the Lakers and the Temptations went on to more Grammy's without Ruffin.

Nemaia - Excellent analogy. I was a little lost because you also referenced Shriek/Dounkey, but thanks for clarity. Eddie Kendricks left the Temptations also shortly after Ruffin. Kobe almost pulled Eddie Kendricks and left Lakers also. Moral behind Tempts story is the group was/is bigger than one individual. Same as the Lakers is bigger than any player.

BTW the Temptations did FORGIVE David Ruffin and he joined them later for a reunion album. So to follow your analogy to the end Shaq will also be forgiven and his jersey retired...I'm just saying.

Shaq did not WIN in LA with EDDIE JONES and VAN EXCEL as ALL-STARS until KOBE CAME TO HIS RESCUE in 2000.

HERE IT IS, SIR:
http://felipereis.com/images/other/ShaqShrek.jpg

Magic Phil,

Lol.

That's an insult to Shrek though.

To those who don't know, there's a new thread up.

I have been a shaq fan since day one and Rome is dead on right... never the leader you could have been big guy... it was always about you.

Fredo, Fredo, Fredo,

No Laker fan will take the OPINION of a Celtic fan. So go home and tell someone who cares.

----------------

I thought you were in the bottom of Lake Tahoe...

Rome is nnothing but a PUNK @SS BIATCH ! Talks like he is the man but can't back SH!T up. He is tired and over with. when he talks on his show he is soooo redundent with every comment. Talk like he know everything but now when he is called out ,he wuss out. what a little B!TCH.

How about this? Shraq...
http://tinyurl.com/3yknab6

I don't really care much for Jim Rome, but wow...he really made Shaq sound childish. A boxing match? Yeah, sure thing Shaquille, that's fair. Nowadays Shaq sounds like a bitter old man. He has taken shots at Dwight Howard, and Chris Bosh, and he is nowhere near their level today. He should be mentoring, not challenging what he can't back up. Shaq has suddenly become that player that hangs on a year or two too long and teams sign hoping that he still has something, anything left. It also seems that he signs with every team now that is a Lakers/Kobe competiton, Phoenix, Cleveland, and now the most hated Celtics. Before that he was talking to the Spurs. I have said it before, he has really fallen off and cannot contribute much more than a few funny post game comments.

1st, let's not forget the Shaq we all came to love and adore. The one who stuck it, with incredible force, to opposing players, dominated the inside, and was truly a man on a mission! Let me repeat that.....A MAN ON A MISSION! By 2004, when his winning attitude became a whining attitude, things changed. Shaq knows who Shaq is. And his ego got the best of him. Call it what you want, but when you holler at the owner, like Shaq did in training camp......"PAY ME MY MONEY!!!!!" Houston, we have a problem. After that, it was love set and match to KOBE! Some people have it, KOBE, and some people don't, Shaq. What's it? To get up a dawn and go run hills.....go to the gym and lift....not work on an album or some stupid song to rip a player that got you three (3) rings in Los Angeles. KB24!! The one that stays "LOYAL" always gets the love. Hy the way, the color green is not a slimming color. Have fun in Bean Town Shaq. They can't wait to cheer you early, then boooooo you later.

hey thedodgerclipperman, check out this link my buddy told me about yesterday, http://sportscomplainer.com/nba , its something u would like. he says its like drudgereport but for sports , whatever that means..ok cya

Shaq's never been one to take the high road.(LOL)
Just another example of his enormous level of immaturity.:-(

Let's go Ls...all the way to a 3-peat!!!!!

Btw, I can't stand Jim Rome. Was this guy ever an athlete?

Let's go Ls...all the way to a 3-peat!!!!!

It doesn't matter if Rome was an athlete or not. That is such a weak comment if someone doesn't like or agree with someone's views or opinions in the media. The simple fact, and it is indisputable, is that Shaq wanted a huge contract and the Laker organization wasn't willing to do it for an un-committed player. Buss and all the Laker brass all know that they could have won 5 or 6 straight titles if Shaq would have cared. His ego got in the way of his desire. What a shame.

Jim Rome is a big mouthed loser who thinks his goatee gives him credibility because he is just a self centered douche with no opinions just insults. At least Howard Stern is funny. Rome is the hero of the jacked up on steroids crew.

Really Lautenberg? That's all you could do was "insult" Rome? Facts are not insults. BTW, Howard Stern is supposed to be funny. Would you listen to him if he wasn't? Whether you like Rome or not, he is relevant cause he still can get to athletes. He says what some are afraid to say. If Shaq knew it wasn't true, he never would have tweeted in the first place, and this would all be a mute point. But when you get called out, as Rome did to Shaq, the truth hurts. So what does Shaq do? He gets mixed up in something he should have left alone. Instead, he challenges Rome to a fight? What is this High School? What the focus should be is why Shaq signed an embarrassing contract with the Celtics. I will be very surprised if number 34 is ever hung in the Staples Center rafters.

My hope is that Bynum is uninjured this coming year and has a breakout season, and is a Presence in the Middle. Would it not be nice to see him work hard and average 15/12 against Celtics (Perkins, Shaq, Big Baby) or 23/15 against the weaker Heat centers.

Shaq was really something as a Laker from 1998-2004, but his attitude, bragging, and ungratefulness have always been irritating to me. His LA charity work was commendable. If Wilt's number hangs in Staples, then so should Shaq's ... despite The Big Mouth's annoying manner and actions.

I still like Kareem the best. Consistent! A Force! An in-shape athlete. A gentleman with intelligence and class. The Greatest Laker's center.

Shaq has worked for 6 different teams, and still has something to contribute off the Celtics bench if he works harder to get into shape as he did for Phil Jackson in 2000. However, Shaq has always been a "Pay Me" kind of guy, and I don't expect his current vet's minimum with the Celtics to motivate him much. Beating the Lakers and Kobe, however, might motivate him some later in the season.

Seems to me that a great player like Shaq who made $24 million plus a year would just retire with dignity in his late 30's. Shaq should have a good speech writer to prepare a positive retirement speech (unlike MJ's), make a few apologies, praise some key people, and work to mend some fences with the Lakers. Easy to do! Bite that fat lip, Shaq, retire with dignity, and move on in life. Will he? Naw, the Big Ego will just disappoint us again and again.

I wish more athletes or anybody in general would beat the hell out of Rome. What an idiot.

Shaq becomes a Celtic. He will also become a Hall of Fame'r who will never have a jersey retired (unless Orlando, Miami, Phoenix, Cleveland or Boston does - NOT!).

This is hilarious and Jim sometimes is a bit over the top with his commentary but here he is dead on accurate. Shaq should be one of those Kareem type of legacy players that doesn't have to move from team to team every year begging for some other star to carry him to another title (Wade and Mourning did it in Miami while Shaq had little to do with that once the regular season ended that year). No great player ever goes from team to team looking for ring because they win wherever they are period. Shaq was a great player whose size and coordination for a 300lb+ man was astonishing but he is a shell of himself now and not worth the minimum if you ask me. Go away Shaq because once you screwed up the Lakers because of jealousy and greed you lost out on being a true legend.
