Ron Artest hosts TMZ, forgets who David Spade is

Ron Artest is no stranger to the celebrity gossip site TMZ, but never has he guest-hosted the trashy TV show before -- until this week.

With TMZ founder Harvey Levin on vacation, the Lakers forward assumed the role of leaning over the cubicle, querying the youngsters about the stories of the day and writing on the see-through board.

David Spade, Chris Rock, Kevin James and Adam Sandler sit courtside during Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California in Los Angeles, California

Throughout the show Artest quipped about this celebrity and in the clip above made fun of comedian David Spade by writing "who the hell is David Spade" on the board. When reminded that Spade was courtside, indeed benchside, with Chris Rock and Adam Sandler during Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Artest attempted to erase his diss.

Fortunately #37 is more proficient at crashing the boards than he is at cleaning TMZ's board.

At the end of the show, Artest challenged the staff to join him in attempting to eat a slice of bread in one minute without any water. As the credits rolled, neither Ron Ron nor a large staffer could chew and swallow the slice in 60 seconds. Award-winning television at its finest.

Who is Kevin James?

Who is Otis?

Who is Chris Rock? Is he related to that wrestler?

Good one, Erik.

On the court, he's the 'True Warrior', Ron Artest.

Off the court, he's just good old Ron Ron to us.

The guy is having some fun, no?

We have lost insta-posting again?

Fatty - I think it's cause everyone was raggin' on Houston yesterday about live-chat. (I kid. I kid.)

Who's high pitch?

What is TMZ?

The Sound-Off,. Season 8, Episode 9

*****

After watching the roller-coaster that was the Celtics-Lakers Game 7, the relief felt by Lakers fans worldwide was immeasurable. After trailing for 3 quarters, the Lakers had somehow found themselves ravaged, beaten down, and on the cusp of victory with 12 minutes to go. Only through some miracle Hail Mary's, did the Lakers escape heartbreak. And though the victory parade had been officially secured, the air of victory was numb.

It wasn't the way if was supposed to happen. We wanted our Lakers to win. We wanted them to win in a blaze of glory, with showtime plays, rim-rocking dunks, and Michelangelo-inspired fade-aways. To put it simply, we wanted them to win in thrilling fashion. It was an emotional cocktail of a night that many, still, have not been able to discern fully.

From a historical perspective, Bryant had missed the mark in a game which could've been his Mona Lisa. Kobe had already been blessed with a great variety of scenarios in which to carve a legacy. 4 early Championship appearances, entrenched in the number '8' jersey. His post-mortem in his late number '24', recorded him as going to three straight Finals. The culmination of 7 Finals appearances had only produced five rings -- one short of Michael.

Two short of infamy.

Would the gods give him any more chances?

Who is David Spade?

I LOVE David Spade. That whole crew from "Just Shoot Me" just cracks me up - Nina, Maya, Elliot, Jack, and the one and only "Finch" (David Spade).

"Award-winning television at its finest.
-- Tony Pierce"

And who the heck is Tony Pierce dissing Artest's show :)
Is that Paul Pierce's brother?

Countdown - 3 more days before schedule comes out.
80 days til opening tip when 17 convenes.

Cheers all.

Testing to see if we've really lost insta-posting again.

Yikes! No insta-posting! What's up with that, Tony?

================

Not sure if MM stock is rising or if Houstons stock is falling.

Houston is doing a good job, c'mon guys...
The guy probably have some other duties up there, insta-posting is on...
What else do we need? It's all good in la la land!

So, it seems it's taking about 3 minutes for a post to appear.

Does that mean someone is reading and clearing these?

If so, turn back on the instant posting switch.

Or is it on a timer?

Magic,

Your posts go through instantly?

Mine used to, now they are taking about 3 minutes.
Maybe there is an internet traffic jam between FL and CA. requiring a detour through South America.

OPEN LETTER TO LA TIMES SPORTS DESK . . .

On behalf of the blogging community here at the Lakers Blog, we would like to thank you for your commitment to this forum. You have allowed many of us to find a sense of community amongst friends with a common passion. We love it.

We also appreciate the work of Mark Medina. His current vacation is MUCH OVER DUE and deserved. (Most of us honestly have no idea how he does everything that he does here!) The make-shift efforts of the temporary staff filling in for Mark during his vacation have reminded us all of what a great job he does on a regular basis.

Therefore, we want to offer the following points. Be advised that several more points may follow in subsequent comments from others.

1. Do NOT undervalue Mark Medina's worth. Your thirst for "hits" seems to have blinded you to the good thing we have. Let him use his instincts to do his job.

2. We value news. Your Temporary Staff falls short of the "Medina-standard" to which we have become accustomed. We do NOT respond well to being patronized with TMZ journalism.

3. We suggest you offer your Temp Staff a lesson or two in developing thicker skin when reading our comments that are less than flattering to their own efforts. We are a quick-witted, opinionated, savy, bi-polar community that is not only bold enough to scream, "The Emperor has no clothes on," but willing to pin the tale on his bare bottom.

4. Medina (one man) managed this blog with insta-posts. Temp Staff (a team) seems unable to do so. Very disappointing. (Please reread point #1.)

5. Get your tech people to better cooperate with our requests. It is a sad commentary on the LA TIMES when multiple suggestions and specific directions for executing said suggestions by some very smart people on this blog fall on LA TIMES deaf ears.

6. We know that the LA TIMES is a business, trying to succeed in a difficult business environment. But please never forget that WE are the customers and the LAKERS are the stars.

Thanks again for this forum. We are a rowdy and rambunctious group who find our balance in life to benefit from our interactions here.

These and future comments offered with due respect.
Mike

LAKERS.com : The Popcorn Machine Podcast Episode #23 - Chuck Person

Chuck Person spent the latest of his 25 years in the NBA as a player and coach as a special assistant coach on Phil Jackson’s staff last season, making such a positive impact that he was named a full-time assistant coach on Aug. 2. Person, known as “The Rifleman” during a 13-year playing career that began with a Rookie of the Year award for the 1986-87 season, joined us on the Popcorn Machine to discuss his basketball past, his relationship with Ron Artest and Kobe Bryant and what he’s learned from Jackson thus far.

hey johnydupree31, my buddy told me about this http://sportscomplainer.com/nba the other day and i know its something that u look for. so ur welcome. u owe me a favor. bye now.

Stupid LATimes back up crew.

Forgot to add before that I sure do love me some RonRon.

I can't wait for the season to start. Hope I live that long. This Lakerholism is KILLING me.

Dog days of summer.

Not much Laker news.

Blog has part time attention of other guys.

Quality drops.

Get over it and wait for MM to come back.

I'll be in jail by midnight.

Just watched ShaqVS...

Well the Diesel seems very comfortable in this medium...This episode was Shaq VS a girl in a spelling bee, and VS Dale Earnhardt in a race...

Shaq does have a magnetic personality, but too bad he comes with the negative baggage...

I could have forgiven all the Laker offenses, if I tried real hard, but I can't forgive the Celtics signing...

I know it's about money, but if he had any foresight, he would have realized signing on with the Chowds, would jeopardize his jersey retirement in LA...

justa -

hope you are having a good weekend...

maybe they took off instant posting because of our 'make believe' articles...

lol lewstrs - maybe so, but it's cuz we're doing a much better job of it than they are!!

otis - just remember to let aunt bee know not to wait up....

*Sidenote*

I believe Shaq knew the sentiment about Laker fans and his signing on with the Chowders...

But as usual, Shaq didn't care, and if anything, he had an element of spite towards LA in the signing...

Well Shaq, what you didn't remember, is Laker fans are very knowledgeable and have a great sense of tradition and history...we don't forget anything...

But we will forget you...Shaqwho....

Rondo or Rose?
I like Rose a lot, prob the best PG in the league. I know, DWilliams is awesome, but he's more like a tall-guard combo, very rare to find (like Magic Johnson). Thos tall-guards can make a pretty good damage, if they have the right supporting cast. But Guard as a Guard, short guy, etc...Rose is one of my favorites:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Rajon-Rondo-is-better-than-Derrick-Rose-and-Davi;_ylt=AiPrZnp5V_EVoYe9Z1_BoTa8vLYF?urn=nba-260221

Maybe Shaq did it to hurt the Lakers, but I don't believe it at all.
He did what was his last option. And a pretty good one, contenders...
I'd have done the same.
Not much to add, we gotta beat these guys bad...

I wonder how long Rondo and his 'perfect skin' would last in prison...lol

Ammo, grow your hair back! All is forgiven.

Dog days in the Lakers Blog.

To follow up what Laker Mike suggested to the replacement crew, there are so many news account that we can discuss and make blogging interesting on non-news. Let us start with the personal lives and childhood of our Lakers from the top down to the last player. I'm sure everyone has a story to tell other than basketball, here is a sample which I found last year about Shannon Brown. This was told by his Dad, Chris Brown when Shannon was growing up to be a hoopster in Maywood, Ill. together with Dee Brown.

http://my.lakers.com/blogs/2009/06/23/browns-basketball-roots/

Well, LA Times is known to be a quality newspaper known around the world with lots of pulitzer awards, peabody recognition. This paper is as old as LA. What happened to this paper today? Are u so antiquated that you stoop down to TMZ level? Will you also get some articles from Globe and Enquirer? When I get the times during weekend, I see the ads are on the headline. Is this progress in the 21st Century or retrogression? Every page you turn, only 1/4 of the page is a news column and everything is ads selling. This is the state of our premier paper in Los Angeles. Perhaps, this blog helped a little bit on the insolvency situation. I think your institution will survive this crisis if you maintain your quality reporting like for example a little research on your thread topics. I just gave you an idea. We want to know more about other Laker staff who are not being mentioned in this blog like the scouts, Bill Bertka, Vlade Divac, Gary Vitti, Ronnie Lester, Is Rudy Tomja. still affiliated with the scouts etc? Do we have to rely on blog topics about Shaq going to be a Leprechaun? or Who is better KB or MJ?

MagicPhil

"I like Rose a lot, prob the best PG in the league. I know, DWilliams is awesome, but he's more like a tall-guard combo, very rare to find (like Magic Johnson)."

I understand what you are saying about D-Wil in terms of a comparison, but talk about a stretch. The closest player to Magic Johnson along those lines was Jason Kidd in his prime. Oscar Robertson would be the closest thing to Magic period, but he played in the days when most teams just had guards, not point guards, with the exception of players like Bob Cousy who paved the way for the point guard position. There has never been a player in the history of the NBA anywhere near Magic Johnson. You can compare the great players at every other position except the point guard position where he stands on a pedestal way above the rest of them.

Fortunately, Phil Jackson believes in having players who can play both guard positions and every guard on the Lakers possesses those abilities now that Blake has replaced Farmar. It is no coincidence that the lead guard position occupies less than 10% of the Lakers monstrous payroll, and that includes splitting Shannon Brown's 2.2 mil salary and adding it to Blake's and Fisher's.

Look, if it ain't broke why fix it and as the NBA has evolved into a point guard dominated league, Coach Eleven Rings has stuck to his guns and will now shoot for 12 NBA Championships in 20 years as an NBA head coach. Why other head coaches haven't attempted to duplicate his model is mind boggling to me. When Bill Walsh innovated and masterminded the "West Coast offense," other teams successfully followed suit. The triangle offense is designed to take full advantage of the 24 second clock which translates into a possession by possession, slowed down game which is absolutely essential to ultimate success in the playoffs. Larry Brown understood that when his Pistons surprised everyone in 2004 and Gregg Popovich has always coached this way. While other teams rely on the high-screen roll motion offenses with the head coach calling plays and transition basketball utilizing a point guard who has the ball in his hands 90% of the time, Phil Jackson has always believed that the lead guard is no more than a role player whose job is to initiate the offense, play solid team defense, take care of the ball and hit open threes. Look at the starters at the lead guard position on his 11 championship teams. Paxson, Armstrong, Harper, Fisher. Not exactly Hall of Famers.

Anyway, I digress, but the point is that you don't need great point guards to win championships, you need great players. Rondo was a role player when he got his ring and over the past 20 or so years, D-Will, Rose, CP3, Kidd and even John Stockton have a collective total of ZERO rings. Only Tony Parker, who played on teams that utilized the 24 second clock, and Chauncey Billups, a true LEAD guard, can claim rings among the great point guards during this time period. Otherwise add Kenny Smith, Avery Johnson and Jason Williams to the names I've already mentioned and that completes your list. Yes, the times they are a changin', but with the formation of the Miami Cheat, we may not see a great point guard sporting bling for several years still.

Go Lakers! #17 coming up STRONG!!

Mi hermano Mamba24...How are you jefe...

Are you into any of these series...

Oh yes and in case anyone is interested my second favorite Science Fiction/Fantasy TV program of all time is, and don't all laugh at once ...BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER!!! Yes, Yes, Yes! This is true! Much like the woman I love who does not love me back and much like Dark Angel she has mad skillz & powers. By the way, although Dark Angel itself was short lived it was patterned affter an even shotrter lived TV series called Birds of Prey, which was my number one Sci/Fi series before Dark Angel. Yes I like it even better than all the Star Trek versions, babylon 5, Battlestar Galatica, Dr who (certain person lol).

Does anyone remember a series called Level-9 about kids working for the government as hackers. Very weird show. Ok I just peeked at the persons name at the end of the post and I'm just filled with joy. Boy do I Love that person. Enjoy your week end folks. Edwin stop bashing the Times. Just tell MM how much we appreciate him when he returns. Lol!

@Lewstrs, Heros and The Shield and that's about it. I have the Dexter series I just haven't watched it yet. Of course Heros has been cancelled and The Shiled ended it's run.

@Lewstrs, Oh I had The Complete Sopranos series never watched it either so I gave it away as a gift since I never opened it. I Know I'm terrible.

This is post #57 for the thread. The substitute teacher is a blog killer. We could do 57 posts in an hour, not an afternoon. Killing insta-post kills the blog.

Shame on you for giving away the Sopranos set...

Dexter is a great show...gotta watch it before you give it away...

Unique plot...a serial killer who is the Coroner's forensic specialist...

I also have Stargate, The Wire and 24 ...

Oh and one final note on Heros. Heros and "The 4400" were kind of similiar shows, if anyone has seen both series, which one did they like the best and why? I liked The 4400 best. It was harder to get into but it was deeper and Megan Igayoke was sooooooo fine!!!! But...yes, yes, Yes!...not as fine as... Justa!!! I'm Out!!!

Nice post 888...

MM will be back on Monday Rick F...we can hang on till then...

Ah KobeMVP888 we are all enjoying your posts it's just that it's the week-end we are trying to post fast and leave out details. Keep doing what you do, you post some good stuff, oh and by the way the posts on the guards was, yes I have to say it...OUT FRAKIN STANDING SIR! Have a good weekend my brother

KobeMVP888, I agree 100% with you. Just to clarify, I was comparing DW to Magic as both being tall-guards, which changes the whole style of play. As pure players, we cannot compare DW to Magic because they have different styles and skills. But both are TALL. That was the only point.
-
Actually, remembering how Magic used to play, it makes me think how much DW can change his game. He can trully become the best PG of his generations, it's just he doesn't have the supporting cast that Magic had.
-
But PG, pure PG...I can't think of a better player than Rose. Again, that's just my humble opinion.
Cheers.

You could add Nash to the list of not just prominent pt guards, but teams that revolve around them and yet, they do not win Titles. Their stats look good in the regular season, but many of them fizzle in the late playoff rounds.

Phil is unique as well as a coach that has won and dominated without a strong center. (see Chicago)

MM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh how we miss you.... hope you're having a good time, but still....!

Great list Lewsters! I would recommend Mad Men and Breaking Bad as additional "Must watch programs". If you record them on DVR then you can fast forward through the commercials.

Spartacus was awesome. Do you know if they will continue the series?

ouchhhhhhhh,

So if what they (Person et al) see with the rookies are true, with a time together, the second team of Caracter (or Ratliff), Ebanks. LO, Blake and SBrown (or Sasha) are a .500 team in itself?

70 wins!

JohnnyV -

I hope they continue Spartacus...it's like a combination of 300, Gladiator, and Rome...

Mad Men and Breaking Bad both look great, but I have not watched...Both shows have received Emmys and critical acclaim...

I would rather wait till the DVD comes out and I can watch the whole thing, ala marathon...hate commercials...

lewstrs - that's why god created TiVo....

So - now that Shannon's resigned, what do you think this means for Sasha? Less time? A different team? I really wanted to see The Return of the Machine this year.... I'm kinda bummed thinking that might not happen.

justa - my sentiments exactly on Sasha...for if the Machine comes back, there is the solution of so many remarks hashed out in here during the FA sweeps...

Aw shoot am I out of my Freakin mind? The greatest Sci/Fi TV series of all-time was the X-Files Period! No Debate! I'm Out!

Can't wait for the funky one Mark Medina to get back. I hope we didn't disappoint him by not reaching the mythical 1200 for a thread.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exactly what it means. Apparently Lakers management doesn't seem Sasha was good enough to be a back up guard that they made an effort to re-sign Shannon. Shannon after all got the bulk of back up SG minutes behind Kobe Bryant. In fact Shannon might not average the same amount of minutes last year even as a reserve. As a reserve, not overall, he averaged 19mpg and a big help was from the fact Kobe went to back up SF quite a bit because of the injury to Walton so expect Shannon to see around 15mpg because Kobe will roughly play 35mpg still and that's a reduction from the last few years especially now Barnes is a quality back up SF behind Ron.

Machine era soon to be over in Los Angeles.

I was never a Sci/Fi fan but I did like the Tin Man series.

Mamba24 - I loved X-Files when it first came out. Then it got too whacked out for my taste. Haven't watched in years. Didn't even go to the movie.

I started watching Eureka & Warehouse 13 - they're most definitely bubble gum, but entertaining.....

Yeah, that was kind of bogus to just end it with no kind of resolution just when all the pieces were coming together. Glad we agree. There are 2 regular TV series out that hardly anybody watches that are Great! "Lie To Me" and Leverage. If you get a chance you should check them out. And Oh one last thing,, Justa...rest your thread changing powers till at least Monday.

Agreed! It just stayed on too long It lasted 11 seasons, after about the 6th it started getting downright ridiculous. But those first 5 were awesome. They had all kinds of plotlines to make you think. But they then got carried away with Muldars sister and it just went into the garbage can. The movies both of them were garbage...but yes I have both DVD's.

KB Blitz and Justa,

I see Sacha as a very different player than Shannon. I believe PJ will use Shannon as a FIRST OPTION to Kobe, but that doesn't mean Sacha will have no minutes. In fact, Sacha's defense is far better than Shannon, but Shannon's offense is far better than Sacha (unless Sacha starts hitting 3-pointers like crazy).
-
So, if I was PJ, I'd use those guys as needed, according to the situation.

Good choice JohnnyV! But I see we are going to have to increase your exposure. If it don't say Sci/Fi throw it back. Lol!

@Justa, Eureka I watched the 1st season but I just could not get into it. It's got a good idea but I don't know maybe it's the actors they picked to star in it but I just couldn't take it. And now a first...What the hell is a "Warehouse 13"? I never heard of it and I thought I knew about all science fiction especially on TV.

Top 50 Sci/Fi Series of all time. Star Trek the original and The Next Generation are number 2 and 3 (Commander Deanna Troi, YES!). What could be number 1?

Thanks JohnnyV! Don't they just have a list rather than flipping from screen to screen. Batlestar Galatica was good but it aint no number 1. But that's what's cool about Sci/Fi you'll never find anyone to agree on a top 10! Not even me and Justa! But thanks again, when I get the time maybe I'll go through the picks. Appreciate it!

Sasha's personal defense is worst than Shannon. Sasha when given the minutes has been known to try to be too pesky and give out fouls in the perimeter. I think he might be trying to think hand checking is still allowed.....

Sasha does give better defense when it comes to fighting through screens and defend players like Reggie Miller (he never ever guarded Miller time just using Miller's game as an example). That's one reason why Ray Allen went off in Game 2 was that Shannon was poor at defending those kind of game.

Shannon with the exception of shooting is better than Sasha in every part of offense though he does stink when trying to be like Kobe and try to do a pull jumper.

Shannon last year as a reserve averaged 19mpg that might go down to 16mpg since Kobe doesn't need to play SF as much as last year. Sasha only averaged 9mpg. Now there is even more talent at the wings. Sasha's minutes will again go down even if he is used for "situational purposes".

Machine era in LA almost finished.

TRACY McGRADY GOING TO THE MOTOR CITY

"Tracy McGrady has been signed by the Detroit Pistons to a one year minimum contract, a source close to the situation tells DraftExpress."

I loved X-Files when it first came out. Then it got too whacked out for my taste. Haven't watched in years. Didn't even go to the movie.

I second you on that!

Actually, my favorite (or the one with most impact on me) sci-fi series was, besides twilight zone of course, THE INVADERS!

I have to agree with you there. Twilight zone was all time great. From the old time Sci/Fi realm, I liked Lost in Space as a kid. I just loved that Robot!

These Crakas! hahaha

Not quite a done deal according to Joe D.

Pistons GM Joe Dumars has confirmed the team is discussing signing Tracy McGrady to a one-year deal. "We have not signed Tracy McGrady, discussing it, definitely haven't signed," wrote Dumars. DraftExpress.com had reported it as a done deal, and there is reason to think that T-Mac (whose suitors have dropped off one by one) would be willing to accept the veteran's minimum of $1.4 million. But what this means for Rip Hamilton is anyone's guess.

Looks like Shaq and Pauly are trying to convince Sheed not to retire -

Shaquille O'Neal believes that fellow Celtics big man Rasheed Wallace "is thinking about coming back," despite his expected retirement.
It sounds like Shaq was making a public pitch to Sheed rather than relaying inside information -- "Rasheed, go on and come back for one or two more years," he said. Paul Pierce has also made a public plea for his return, as the paleolithic Celtics gear up for another run at a championship.

If Sheed comes back Boston will have too many big men that expect to play - Perkins, KG, JO, Shaq, Sheed, Big Baby...that's 6 guys to chop up 96 minutes once Perkins returns. KG will definite get his 32 mpg...so that leaves 5 guys for 64 minutes --I smell some unhappy campers.

I believe Shaq knew the sentiment about Laker fans and his signing on with the Chowders...
But as usual, Shaq didn't care, and if anything, he had an element of spite towards LA in the signing...

Lewstrs - I think Shaq just wants another title so he can catch Kobe, pass Duncan and probably most importantly try to stay relevant this season.

"Friends"? are you kidding? lame
David Spade is a Phoenix Suns fan
Kevin James and Chris Rock are Knicks fans.
Schneider is a GSW fan.
Sandler I believe is a Celtic fan.

As a far as Shaq to the Celtics. Who cares? he like to play for teams Lakers despise. The good thing about that, the Celtics will give the Heat problems. It's not going to be easy for the 3 stooges vs Boston and Orlando.

I'm with you Magic I like Rose at lot. He has more pure talent than Rondo...but I think Rondo is more of a pure pg. If I had to pick one to start my team it would be Rose. He's so explosive, outside shot is really improving and will improve also as a quarterback now that he's got Booze and a few more options. Both will be all-stars for years to come. The thing I love about Rose and Rondo is they're both ultra competitive. Rose said he didn't feel the need to recruit Lebron. If he came cool, if not cool. Rondo pretty much told the Heat to bring it cause the C's will be waiting.

As far as DWill goes he's not really that tall, only 6-3. But he just has that big body (210 lbs) and he's super strong. He outweights Rondo/Rose by 20-30 lbs easy. I consider him a true pg...he looks to set up his teammates first (Sloan system), although he's definitely a scorer also.

KobeMVP888,

I agree about JKidd being the closest thing to Magic. When Kidd was at his best he could rebound as start the break like Magic. Also totally unselfish. Just couldn't score or overpower opponents like Magic. But he was a great leader like Magic.

As far as Phil not needing great pg's. When you arguably the two greatest wing players ever in Kobe/MJ that definitely negates the need for an all star PG.

Lewstrs - I agree The Wire is definitely a must see. I almost had as much withdrawals when that ended as when a Laker season ends...ALMOST...lol.
