Reader comments: Assessing which Laker would be good at interviewing themselves

54469036

On Friday we asked, "Beside Ron Artest, who recently interviewed himself with the help of ESPN The Magazine's Sam Alipour, who else on the Lakers would you like to see interview themselves? And what would the questions and answers entail?" Here's a sampling of what you all came up with:

"Isn't it obvious? The Machine. If he is half as funny as Sasha V. the Blogger that will be one classic interview. But Ron Ron's interview is the all-time all-time interview. They will be discussing that interview in Sports Forums and even Journalism schools for years to come. When Ron ends his career as a Laker I venture to say - although I know I will get attacked for saying this - That Thriller will be the most beloved Laker of All time, yes even supplanting Magic!...IMHO!" -- Mamba24

""Besides Artest, who else would you like to see interview themselves?" For some reason I'd like to see Sasha and Andrew interview themselves. Sasha, because that's a lot of accent; Andrew, because it would just be so bumbling and awkward it would become fascinating. If Kobe interviewed himself it would be the most terse interview in the history of interests. KB1: Do you? KB2: Yes. KB1: I thought so. KB2: Right." -- Jon K

WHAT'S IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? Terminator, Rise of Machine......and any movie starring international superstar, Fabio. Machine like style of Fabio very much, but Fabio need headband to achieve maximum sexiness.

WHERE ARE YOU MOST AT PEACE? Machine most at peace when hugging best friend Kobe. After game 7, Machine hug Kobe for 2 minutes and 24 seconds straight. Best friend Kobe try to let go, but Machine hold on for dear life.

WHAT ABOUT PHIL JACKSON? DIDN'T HE GET UNDER YOUR SKIN? Impossible to get under skin of Machine. Machine have exoskeleton.

BUT DIDN'T DRAGIC GET UNDER YOUR SKIN? Machine do not understand silly question. Next question!!

BUT YOU DO LOVE THE SPOTLIGHT, RIGHT? Machine hate spotlight, but spotlight follow Machine everywhere Machine go. Spotlight is both blessing and curse for Machine. Spotlight attract sexy lady fans of Machine, but also make people jealous of sexiness of Machine.

DO YOU STILL WANT TO PLAY FOR TEAM SLOVENIA? Only if Team Slovenia change name to Team Machine.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON KOBE? Best friend Kobe yell at Machine every day, but Machine don't mind. When best friend Kobe say to Machine "you are an extremely annoying pest", Kobe really saying "I love Machine".

WHO DO YOU WISH YOU COULD'VE PLAYED AGAINST IN HIS PRIME? Danny Ainge. Ainge game most similar to Machine, but Machine beat Ainge at his own game. -- Sasha V

"Andrew Bynum would be an interesting self-interview. He seems to be the most overlooked starter on the team. Really though, he is rather fascinating. He was the youngest player to play in an NBA game, he stood up to Shaq at a very young age, and survived Kobe's wrath during the pre-Gasol era. He also was a student of the legendary Mr. Jabbar for a couple of years. I would also like to hear about how he has dealt with all the injuries through the years, as well as his adolscent days in New Jersey." -- TNTLakerFan

Mamba24 - yes - the only 2 lol!

JohnnyV - we're all flawed, brother. All we can hope for in this life is to find someone who's blind in one eye and can't see out of the other LOL!!!

I'm just kidding. The secret to a happy & successful relationship, IMHO, is to remain calm in the face of trouble, be clear in communicating your understanding of things, let the little things slide, accentuate the positives of your mate, and do the little things that make each other happy. My hubby and I have been together 23 years - married for 18 of them. It just seems like yesterday.... A life shared is a great treasure, but an even better gift.

Wallace,

I don't know if you are married but my wife consider herself a blog widow, a golf widow and Lakers game widow. I respond back I too is American Idol and Dancing With the Stars widower. If only our dogs can talk, they're eager to share opinions on this widowing.

Huh, I was just telling my girl about how I was confessing to being hopelessly flawed and yet I was living in her good graces. She thought for a moment and said, "Well, I'm pratically perfect in every way". Meaning, I was forgiven? I dunno, woman speak....is difficult for me.

justa,
"Someone - forgot who - on the last thread mentioned something about odd movies they saw and loved."

That was me, they aren't freaky movies, just movies that related to my life.....Intersection, parallels the separation between my wife and I, we're still married, and friend, and in that movie Gere rolls a silver Mercedes, his character was 42 y.o., well guess who happened to roll a silver Mercedes 3.5 times when he was 42???? Yours truly. His wife in the movie was hot, Sharon Stone, the woman he picked up with was not, Davidovich, ditto.

Pushing Tin.....a movie about the stresses of working in a high stress environment, I have for many years, if I make a mistake, someone can die. I have to multitask, at last count I have 8 jobs (responsibilities)......

ow, the pain.....(that's my nickname, you know how I got it, I punch my girlfriend (not hard, enough to bruise, just a almost enough to sting, and she says "ow!" AND I say "what?", plus my nephews could not pronounce my name when they were toddlers, it came out as "OWard"

Fatty oh Fatty, are you going to say your last farewell....

No, no you will be spared from any kind of calamity because you are good Laker fan. You unfinished business here, Lakers Blog is your salvation the rainbow that will stop rain and flood waters at your curser. Bring your laptop at evacuation center and go for 800 tonight.

His wife in the movie was hot, Sharon Stone, the woman he picked up with was not, Davidovich, ditto.

I for one think Davidovich is smokin. I wish she made more movies. I'm not trying to be disagreeable, I just really like her. Think she's gorgeous.

"My girlfriend in half Pinay (filipina)"

You ain't seen nothing yet. Be ready to adopt all her extended family to 4th cousin, the godmothers and godfathers and their brothers and sisters. Be ready to be a tourist guide when they all visit LA, you feed them, housed them and entertain them too. lol!

Holy smokes you aren't kidding Edwin. My father is from Naples Italy and I thought WE Had a large family!

I have been telling her that I want to take a business trip to the Philipines and stay for a few months so that I can hire one of those Call centers for my business and then get them trained. She doesn't want me to because she is afraid of the Gangsters. BUMMER.

Looks like I will go to India instead? Not sure.

JohnnyV,

Everyone has their own personal tastes, my wife as I said is hot, smart and successful MBA/CPA, and killer body still, you don't want to mess with her in a financial meeting....My GF was not, I had to build her piece by piece, but she had some benefits, if you know what I mean, great personality, intelligent sense of humor, she's a professional as well, not that kind, but the kind that you have to take go to school for, take a license exam, and you get call yourself Doctor.

Johnny V.

Frankly, it is fun I survived 25 years doing it from San Diego to Santa Barbara for at least a week visit. When you go to RP, you will be treated like a king, will feed you for as long as you have enough space in your tummy. American expats are treated well in Manila and you can get a call center employee who have masters degree. What your girlfriend is afraid of, are the other type of gangsters the abundance of escort service till you get dried. lol!

Philippines is my heritage country, Johnny V but my heart now belongs to our unemployed youth here in US. Why don't you give them a chance to be hired on casual basis? I know a lot of new graduates who are unemployed and loaded with student loans and credit cards too. If we looked elsewhere for cheap labor, we will never bring back the happy faces to many families. Just my 2 cents.

Humanomaly (ow) - what happened to the 29 minutes?

You said your wife was smart and at the same your GF was not and you have to put all the pieces together. A wife and a girl friend, forgive me for being inquisitive, do you have a license to do two things at the same time? If you do, you are privileged.

Edwin, I am taking your advice and not saying too much. But I am talking about spending $20k to $40k a year on the project. My staff is not at risk nor are future hires and my commitment to local talent. No worries my friend and I am in agreement with you.

Thanks for your input though and I do value your 2 cents.

It should say "Besides Ron Artest", not "Beside Ron Artest" :-)

Sorry for the tease, that is reffering to something else.

But today we survived another round of flooding. If my count is right, that's...

Fatty - 4

God - 0

Normally that means Fatty wins the series, but HE writes the rules, and we are going at it again tomorrow. (Stern would love that much power) I think HE wants a do over, like the Celtics did when they lost the series. "Its not we fair we lost. I didn't have my whole team. The Angel Gabriel was sick" Yeah, wa, wa, wa....sore loser!

Phatty's Pharewell Tour? Its great news that I will share with you tomorrow when I have time to type. Its the best Lakers news of my lifetime. Its a dream come true....

Fatty made it! Glad to hear it Fatty. THAT was high drama of the best kind. BRAVO!

Wes,

I took a break to go to Target to pick up some blu-ray movies, and they had books, alot of them, as if people read them, they had the paperwork version of "Atlas Shrugged", wikipedia says that the book, probably hardcover original 1st edition is 1368 pages, the paperback at Target was the small size, old traditional size, but it was about 3 inches thick and the font must have been about 6. I couldn't read it, maybe with reading glasses.

Mamba24, I just noticed you had the Riddick movie(s) in your fav sci-fi, I agree, that series of movies was fun, action was great, Riddick (Vun Diesel) was awesom, and the trilogy was complete. The ending was not "Hollywood" predictable, but that's the way I like it. Like Blade Runner and the different endings, Pretty Woman, and the reshoot to make it a happy ending.....all examples of studios overpowering writers and directors....I hate that.

about women and designer bags, yeah, been there, but in a way they are worth it......a quality Louis Vuitton set (bag/wallet/other wallet case) will typically run about $2200 here in the US....for the traditional brown leather initial style, but they are made well, will never go out of style, so if you dollar cost average it, a woman will use it for say 20 years, yes, it's possible, but not daily, they'll usually switch to their other sets....so if it lasts 20 years, that's only $55/year and the joy it brings them in having what they want. Instead of say buying a Coach quality bag, then a Dooney & Bourke bag, set every year at hundreds a pop, and that will add up, and they won't be happy, so think about the dollar cost averaging. That's how I justify buying cars that are a little pricey.

HA (hope you don't mind me referring to you as that), you were mentioning the classics earlier. I would recommend instead "The Pearl" and "Of Mice and Men". John Steinbeck is a can't miss author. Another recommendation is "Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "Call of the Wild". Those are a few of the classics and they are easy reading. Fast, good, and meaningful.

My way of reading this article, Lakers are ready to set their sights elsewhere if SB decides to go for the 4m multiple years. It appears that Lakers will not exercise the birds rights on SB. I see the chance of JCritt or Earl Watson to take his place. Whatever will be the decision, we as Laker fans will be happy that our former players are being respected again in the league. There was a time when Mitch has to beg to Pacers Pres & GM to talk to him and consider our stars who were regarded in the league as scrubs. He could not even talked to this Mr. Thorn and was severely embarrassed in the rumor mill. Well, three years later, the word of Mitch is the word of the fabled King Midas. Whatever he touches, turns into gold and today, all teams want our players except Luke. lol!

Fatty - you scared the crap out of me.

It sounds like you're winning the battles - just make sure you win the war.

If your great Laker news includes season tickets, or going to games, or meeting the Lakers, or anything like that there - then make sure you talk Mrs. Fatty into letting me tag along ok? I'll make your beer runs for you.

What is the record for most posts on a single thread?

I recall we went over 1000.... 2 or 3 years ago.

Fatty - hang in there. You're in my prayers.

Wow great effort guys. You guys are amazing. Just FYI - I'm going to put the comments section off moderation simply because we'll have the sports desk taking care of it while I'm gone. It'll be easier than having to catch up on which comments have been approved, which ones haven't etc. since multiple people will be helping out.

MM

MM - have a great vacation and don't worry too much about the wild bunch here.

Fatty,

I hope you and your family are alright, brother.

Be well.

human- "Crying of Lot 49"

Probably Pynchon's great contribution to literature. I am ashamed to say that although I have tried more than once, I can't make it through Gravity's Rainbow.

Ayn Rand? John Galt can perform and obeisance to my van gundy. That woman knew as much about psychology and economics as, well, the people who read her. As Stephen Fry might say "loose stool water of the lowest degree"

Enjoy your vacation Mr. Medina! I look forward to your posts when you return! Training camp will be the first step to the three-peat!

Larry- apology accepted. I should have praised you in greater detail and with higher praise. I'm never too shy to not shout about my love from the highest part of the longest thread.

Good Morning Laker Fam,

long summer but the team new outlook, new challengers, road to the threepeat will be very exciting.... can't wait

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE DOING ON THIS THREAD? GET ON THE PRIOR THREAD AND DO YOUR FAIR SHARE NOW!!!!! LMAO!!

Yeah, Phred, the Ayn Rand perspective in "Atlas" is pretty disturbing. I guess her experiences in communist Russia made her hate socialism because it always leads to one tyrant leading a bunch of poor people. But that's exactly how her characters in "Atlas Shrugged" end up. I see no difference between a despot created by capitalism and one put in power by some form of socialism. Ayn Rand does, but I don't. Her world view still leads to seperate classes of people, one a faceless worker, the other a super human. I guess the only difference is that Rand's superhuman is self-built? Maybe.Still, her world sucks.

Wes

Mamba24, are you not yet tired of posting just to reach the mark? this must be the effects of Inception, just kidding in order not to dampen your spirit. I think the record books will remember the quality of your posts and ignore the quantity.

Good morning!

Just wanted to report we survived the floods pretty well this weekend but apparently a lot of others did not.

The soil erosion has seriously undermined the utilities, beneath and above ground in the region. The authorities have warned us we will propbably have many services disrupted for signifigant periods of time and to prepare for that.

So, if you don't hear from me, its because internet, tel. will be down.

The important part is we are safe. The government is strongly recommending we evacuate for each storm because the torrents are becoming more intensified and dangerous. We will comply. Its not worth it to sit it out to protect your property.

Gotta go... Thanks for your support.

Fatty

Just re-watched game 1 of the Finals as part of a seven day / seven game marathon.

Poll question - which Mark Jackson catch phrase is stupider?

1) Hand down, man down!

2) Mama, there goes that man!

Tom Daniels,

I vote that they are both equally stupid.

Is it Laker season yet? Is it Laker season yet? Is it Lakers season yet? No? How about now? What about... now? Now? Yes? :D Wait, NO? >:( Ugh! Dammit! Now? Still no? WTF!? Ahhhhhhhrrrgghhh!

Yes. I am having major Lakers withdrawals.

wes,

I find the "continuing genius of Ayn Rand" to be utterly lame.

Quite frankly, all the garbage that came about as a result of Darwin's "Evolution of Species" (Social Darwinism) is just lame.

Communism = Stupid

Ayn Randian Libertarianism = Stupid

Fascism = Stupid

All this 19th Century/1/2 20th Century social engineering theory is based in false reality and the delusionary nature of these unrealistic philosophical/political theories is still causing dissonance today, becausae we, to varying degrees, still abide by these concepts and these concepts will NEVER be practical solutions to the problems that plague societies. Never.

What infuriates me is that no one has had the good sense to produce a better, more realistic, alternative socio-economic evolutionary path since Marx/Engels. Everything has basically been a reaction since their work (Libertarianism and Fascism being reactions against Socialism and Communism respectively).

Something new needs to be invented because the old dynamic doesn't work and is quite frankly LAME.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

haha! machine interview. so funny.

Wes,

Actually... I created an alternative socio-economic evolutionary model a few years ago in contrast to Marx/Engels work where instead of capitalism evolving into socialism, capitalism evolves into "humanisist capitlism" as a part of a series of steps until we eventually get to a point where traditional concepts of money are no longer used.

I think it could actually work. You just have to harness and evolve our competitive instinct in a manner that is healthier and mutually beneficial.

Traditional capitalism is based upon win-loss strategies while humanistic capitalism would be (almost) entirely based on "win-win" strategies.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Question for MM: What is the salary of a Laker Girl? I saw some unsubstantiated numbers on the web of $100 per game and $40 per practice (these were 2001 numbers so they might be higher now?).

Lakers top NBC Sports Power Rankings:

Amazing what can happen when the source is not that four letter word that starts with E and ends with N.

"OK don't come back JustAnotherMambafan. See if I care. By the way those Virtual Divorce papers were not signed by me yet and if you don't come back on The Blog now, I just might not sign them! NOW!!!

Posted by: MAMBA24 | August 01, 2010 at 03:22 PM"

Mamba24, careful...by telling her not to come back...she may not, then you would get a divorce, but you don't want to.

If you stay away too long, she may pull the "abandonment"card on you....so you two behave or else your virtual marriage will dissolve.

"You may be able to file for divorce based on abandonment or desertion if your spouse left you and never came back. Abandonment or desertion is considered a traditional or fault ground for divorce. In the majority of states that allow fault-based divorce, abandonment or desertion is one of the reasons for divorce.

Many states have laws that allow a spouse to obtain a divorce because their husband or wife has abandoned or deserted them for a certain period of time. The time period varies according to the state where the spouse who files for divorce lives, but it's typically one year or more.

Laws in each state vary, but generally abandonment or desertion is found when one spouse decides to stop living with the other spouse without having a good reason and leaves with the intention of not returning to the couple's home or that the marriage should end. A few states distinguish between "desertion" and "abandonment." Desertion requires an intent to end the marriage. Abandonment requires only the absence for a certain amount of time.

Abandonment and desertion are closely related to no-fault grounds that allow divorce after a husband and wife have lived apart from one another for a certain period of time. In a no-fault divorce, neither spouse is blamed for the failure of the marriage. No-fault divorces are allowed in every state and the District of Columbia." (Lawyers.com)

TomD,

Actually I like them both. Delonte West was the first person I heard say "Hand Down Man Down". Now I'm sure that'll really make you fond of that saying...lol.

I found this off of Lakers.topbuzz.com, I don't know how accurate it is butit does reflect my belief that only Champions are allowed to talk about Champions! This takes place during the 1992 Olympics about a discussion between Magic and Jordan and the epic scrimmage they played.

Today, when players are asked who the best player ever is, the politic, self effacing answer is Michael Jordan. But do they really feel that way in their hearts? I doubt it. After all, men like Mikan, Russell, Oscar, Wilt, Baylor, Magic, Kareem, Kobe, Bird and others played the game at the highest level imaginable. They could do things on the court as they wanted, when they wanted. Why would they really feel any player was as good as themselves, let alone better?

What do they really think when they are alone, out of camera and microphone range? When they can express their true feelings?

That scenario played out in a most interesting fashion back in 1992 during the Dream Team assault on the Olympics. And it involved two of the greatest players in NBA history-Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.

Let me set the milieu for you so we can understand the context of this confrontation and what brought it about:

At the time of 92 Olympics, the NBA hierarchy was in a state of change. The Magic-Bird era had just ended, the Jordan ascendancy was blossoming. Magic had retired two years ago, involuntarily, because of the HIV virus. He had lost his last finals to Jordan in 90. Being the competitor that he was, no doubt Magic felt that if he could have continued to play, Jerry West would have made a few tweaks the Lakers and he (Magic) would have led them back to the mountaintop, winning more championships and taking his accustomed individual place at the top of NBA totem pole. In fact, Magic still had visions of this; he intended to come back to basketball after the Olympics, a revanchist strategy that would be spiked in no small part due to Dream Team teammate Karl Malone and Phoenix Sun GM Jerry CoAngelo. So at this point, Magic, who though no longer close to the player he was in his prime, still had very formidable skills, was a prideful and disillusioned man, feeling his career had not been fulfilled and ended as it should. He felt circumstance had given Jordan what should still be his. Neither Magic nor anyone else at this time knew just how great Jordan and his bulls would become. At the time of these Olympics, Magic had to feel he was the King in forced exile from his realm.

Jordan on the other had was rising the sun. He felt that Magic and Bird were the setting sun. He had played long and hard to get where he was and wanted recognition for his accomplishments. The Dream team was seen as a final exposition and good bye tour for the two seminal greats of the NBA: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Jordan understood this and did not begrudge the two fading legends as they received the lion’s share of the pre Olympic publicity. But in private, he wanted it understood in no uncertain terms that he was now the king of the league.

These dynamics came into play in a very intense and interesting series of events that took place during the 92 games.

One night, during a long conversation, the elephant in the room came alive. The participants where Magic, Jordan, Bird, Barkley, Ewing and erstwhile NFL pro bowl wide receiver Ahmad Rashad.
Bird posed a simple question: Which NBA team was the greatest ever?
Ewing said Russell’s Celtics with their 11 rings. Rashad countered by saying Bird’s 86 team had the greatest front line ever. Barkley agreed saying that that line was “Brutal.” Since he played against it, he should know.

Jordan replied, “You haven’t seen the greatest team of all time yet. I’m just getting started. I am going to win more championships than any of you guys. Let’s have this conversation after I am done playing.”

Magic shot back: “You are not winning five championships!”

Barkley said, “I am going to steal one from you, Michael.”

Magic became indignant, saying his 87 squad was by far the greatest in history. “Me, Kareem, Worthy, Scott and Coop would have dominated your Bulls.”

Barkley was about to speak when Bird piped up, “Quiet!! You haven’t won a thing. You have no say in this. Same with Patrick and Ahmad. Your all gone! You guys have no championships so just sit there and be quiet and maybe you will learn some things.” (As an aside, interesting comments from Bird for those who wonder why Lebron wants to win championships so bad)

At this point, Barkley, ashamed, sulked off. Ewing and Rashad stopped talking. Rashad found this conversation between Jordan, Bird and Magic fascinating and elected to stay as did Ewing.

Jordan continued to throw support to his Bull teams as the Lakers equals. Bird reminded Jordan that he used to torture Pippen till his back gave out on him the last few years.

Magic told Jordan he felt sorry for him, not have a great rival like Bird and Magic did with each other. That he had no one to measure himself against.

The conversation then switched to who was the best one on one player. Jordan immediately became aggressive again. “Give it up. You got no chance on this one. Larry, you don’t have the speed to stay with me. Magic, I can guard you, you can’t guard me. Neither of you guys can play defense like me and you can’t score like me.”

“I don’t know about that,” retorted Magic. “I could have scored more if I had wanted to. It would have been a good one.”

Jordan’s face darkened. He had not minded letting Bird and Magic get their media retirement props in the Barcelona circus tour, but in private, he wanted acknowledgement from his peers for what he was: the best in the league.

“You better give it up,” he told Magic. "I will come in your gym and drop 60 on you. Ask your friend Larry about it. You guys were great players. You did amazing things. But it is over. This is my game now.”

“Michael, don’t forget, me and Larry turned the NBA around. We ARE the NBA," countered Magic.

“I have taken it to a new level,“ retorted Jordan. “And it is not your league anymore. It’s mine!”

"You’re not there yet,” said Magic.

Bird watched this exchange silently. He detected a swagger in Jordan he had never seen before. He recognized the strain of confidence, bordering on arrogance. It was how he used to feel when he was on top of the basketball world. “There were plenty of years when I knew in my heart I was the best guy in the room,” Bird said, years later. “That night I knew in my heart it wasn’t me anymore. And it wasn’t Magic either.”

Rashad, a friend to both Magic and Michael tried to soften the ever heating rhetoric. But he could not. The conversation was becoming ugly, bordering on out of control. Jordan wanted concessions from Magic that Johnson would not provide.

“You time has passed, old man, give it up,” needled Jordan.

Finally, Bird decided to step in to stop the escalation. “Magic, stop! We had our moment. There was a time when nobody was better than you and me. But not anymore. Michael is the best now. Let’s just pass the torch and be on our way.”

That conversation was over, but not the competition.

During scrimmages, Coach Chuck Daly would always have Magic and Michael on different teams. In Magic’s view, he would stock Jordan’s crew with the superior players. He thought Daly was doing this to challenge Magic; to show him that he did not consider his HIV as a factor in his play or a reason to give him mercy or pamper him. Magic rose to the occasion, frequently leading his team to victory over Jordan's. He loved challenges like that and the fact that Daly treated him as just a player, not a sick person.

Trash talk was long and loud during the scrimmages. But one time, Magic just couldn’t resist taking a dig at Jordan who rose to the bait. During a scrimmage, Magic’s (Drexler, Robinson, Malone, Barkley) team had taken a 14-2 lead over Jordan’s (Bird, Pippen, Ewing, Mullin, Laettner) with a dizzying array of Johnson passes leading to the advantage. As he jogged back up court, Magic detoured past Jordan and said, according to sources either, “You’re getting busted,” or “Hey MJ, you better get with it.”

Jordan’s fists clinched and his face got dark. He called for the ball, drove to the basket for a dunk. “That good enough for you?” he asked.

Pippen immediately perked up when he recognized the signs on Jordan’s face and his demeanor.

“Y’all have done it now!” said Pippen.

Jordan went on a defensive tear, swarming the west with traps and full court pressure. He jumped passing lanes, knocked down one handed slams, pushed Magic off the block and hit fadeaways. Within minutes, the score was tied and Magic was complaining about no calls. ”It’s like I’m in Chicago stadium," he complained.

“Welcome to the 90s,” Jordan said cold-bloodedly. Ouch!

At the end of regulation, the game was tied. But Jordan and Magic would not let it end. “We’re going again!” said Jordan. “No,” replied Coach Daly, worried about injury. He was ignored as the overtime started.

The over time was brutal, with all the players fighting at the top of their ability to secure the win and the bragging rights. Robinson grinding in the post, Malone and Barkley fighting for boards, Bird hitting parameter shots, Magic controlling the tempo. But it was Jordan with the last word with transcendent play and wizardry that assistant Dave Gavitt would call the most amazing five minutes of basketball he had ever seen.

I can just imagine what that scrimmage and overtime must have been like. It is true shame for basketball aficionados and fans that a film does not exist of that game. Would any of you want to see that ‘scrimmage’ of Magic vs Michael, populated by teams of all time greats, as much as I would?

At the end, Jordan and Bird strutted and skipped off the court, gloating shamelessly about the win. Magic left the floor demanding a new officiating crew. “Magic was cursing at the refs, his teammates and his coaches,” Jordan recalled. “He couldn’t stand that we beat them. It was the most fun I have ever had playing basketball.”

And that’s it. That is a rare, inside look of what really happens, what these truly rare players really feel, when it is just them, devoid of the cameras, the public spotlight, the politic responses; just them, their egos, their careers and their incredible games to back them up. It is what makes them who they are.

My sources for this post was the GREAT book, When the Game Was Ours by Jackie MacMullan (if you haven’t read this book, you should) and Golden Boys by Cameron Strauth. I simply changed much of the descriptive text to my own words to facilitate the story for this post, give my own ideas on the events and for brevity. I added my own preamble so readers born years later, or too young at the time, would understand the stage these events happened on.

Humanomaly (ow) - what happened to the 29 minutes?

You said your wife was smart and at the same your GF was not and you have to put all the pieces together. A wife and a girl friend, forgive me for being inquisitive, do you have a license to do two things at the same time? If you do, you are privileged.

Posted by: Edwin Gueco | August 01, 2010 at 07:56 PM

Edwin, the ow is one of my laptops, the 29 minutes is on another....obviously I had to give up my protest for Sun Yue, who was only given 29 minutes of game time in his one year. As I said before, I think the parting was mutual, I think the Chinese National team would rather have him playing regularly somewhere, than sitting on the bench, getting hemorroids,
Aboug GF, she's actually very smart as well, just at the beginning not too street smart, she has incredible drive, and had developed a business mind, even though like myself, we are both in the medical field. My wife and I have been separated since late 90's, not legally on paper, she does her thing and I do my thing, we don't ask about each other's activities when we see each other, usually 3-4 times a year, as she lives in another state now. (Where she was born and raised and has family). But we're not dumb, just tolerant. So in a way I do have a license. But I don't exercise it, Wife and I are just good friends, with a contract.

"Yeah, Phred, the Ayn Rand perspective in "Atlas" is pretty disturbing.

Wes, you really hit it on the nose, I too felt the same thing, it's like she's dealing with two things, that are, as you astutely detailed, are much the same. If you want a short read by her try "The Virtue of Selfishness".....

"HA (hope you don't mind me referring to you as that), you were mentioning the classics earlier.

JV, HA or human would be fine, I'll check those out, I have a 5 week vacation coming up and was planning on finding a cabin or something on the Oregon Coast and doing nothing, so those would be great reads, thanks alot!!!!

"human- "Crying of Lot 49"

Probably Pynchon's great contribution to literature. I am ashamed to say that although I have tried more than once, I can't make it through Gravity's Rainbow.

Ayn Rand? John Galt can perform and obeisance to my van gundy. That woman knew as much about psychology and economics as, well, the people who read her. As Stephen Fry might say "loose stool water of the lowest degree"

Posted by: phred | August 02, 2010 at 12:23 AM"

Phred, Everytime I pick up Gravity's Rainbow, I can't put it down, it has some of the basics of a fun-time, sex, bombs and espionage.....

Read this: http://www.themodernword.com/pynchon/pynchon_music_anderson.html

She did Moby Dick, she wanted to do a performance opera of Gravity's Rainbow, and he said fine, as long as you only use one instrument, a banjo. She said some people have a very distinct way of saying "no".

LakerTom and I have talked about Laurie Anderson for years, such a uniquely talented woman, trained as a classical violinist, now she dabbles in everything, was Nasa's one and only artist in residence, she wasn't quite sure what her role was to be, so that wasn't real productive, she's done some of the music for the last few Olympic ceremonies, here's the kicker, she got married a few years ago to a guy I'm sure you all know, think Velvet Underground...Lou Reed, a guy who made Bowie and Ziggy Stardust seem tame in comparison. How he never overdosed and ended up as a dead artist is beyond me. He's in great health and spirit in appearance, you can see them on you-tube....
....but Phred, maybe you need a time when you can relax and follow Gravity's Rainbow, it's not an easy read, but it definitely is much easier than an Ayn Rand Novel.

MM has obviously burned everybody out on the Blogathon thread OR the LA Times Sports Dept is dropping the ball on new posts. Nothing for over 3 hours?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TOM
@MM... I have to say I am disappointed that the automatic posting has been put on hold while you are on vacation. Suffering over 3 hours without a post is quite a comedown from the Blog-a-thon with 1100 posts. Undoubtedly, this complaint will fall on deaf ears if you are gone. We bust our butts to respond to and exceed your challenge and the Times rewards us by shutting us down. Way to douse our enthusiasm, LA Times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@LAKER J... “Sex: Yes, Location: Anywhere, Marital Status: No preference.” LMAO. That was the best response to Lew’s quick biography post. Of course, when I first read it and saw “No preference,” I mistook it for your sexual preference. JK. It could have been your “virtual” sexual preference. LOL.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@MAMBA24... Speaking of dreams and Inception, I suffered considerably from nightmares when I was a child, mostly some form of monster chasing me. By accident, I discovered when I fell off or drove my car off a cliff, I miraculously woke up. That later developed into my just falling over backwards whenever I was threatened in a dream. Eventually, I stopped having nightmares completely and even to this day never have nightmares where I am scared of something. Wonder if anybody else has undergone a similar tactic to avoid bad dreams.
Laker Tom,
"Speaking of dreams and Inception, I suffered considerably from nightmares when I was a child, mostly some form of monster chasing me."
I am an extremely active dreamer. There pretty much isn't a night that goes by in which I do not have some epic dream on monumental scope--for joy or terror.
One point of frustration for me is that I often compose amazing symphonies in my dreams which form the soundtrack of my experience. When I awake, I remember the experience, but not the complete melodies. It seems my unconscious creative mind is far more advanced than my counscious creative mind. What a disappointment.
What do we play for? RINGS!!!
GO LAKERS!!!
Testing 1-2-3!
Jolly Rancher,
"Those battles with God become wars of attrition. You are battling with limited resources while HIS are infinite."
True; however, I believe that God is sometimes inspired by our courage at continuing to fight a war that we cannot win and, thus, acquiesces not out of fear or inability, but out of respect for the heart of our commitment.
What do we play for? RINGS!!!
GO LAKERS!!!
So I take it no more instant posts while MM is away?!?
This SUCKS!!! I might have to stay away until he gets back... One of the things that makes this particular blog SO GREAT is the ability to see and answer posts in an efficient manner.
This WAITING AROUND is FOR THE BIRDS (not named Larry)!!!
No wonder...I thought my posts are disappearing...
So no 'instant post'...
Over 1000 post over the week end with no monitoring...and now on a regular day, they decide to play gestapo...lol
No more instant posting now until MM gets back
Mo more instant posting was supposed to be a question.
Suppose whomever is moderating now did that to discourage posting at all, so easier to monitor the comments?
OK don't come back JustAnotherMambafan. See if I care. By the way those Virtual Divorce papers were not signed by me yet and if you don't come back on The Blog now, I just might not sign them! NOW!!! Posted by: MAMBA24 | August 01, 2010 at 03:22 PM"
Mamba24, careful...by telling her not to come back...she may not, then you would get a divorce, but you don't want to.Posted by: humanomaly (ow) | August 02, 2010 at 11:29 AM
Humanomaly, You Diabolical Genius!!! You know what I'm going to say don't you? Yes, Yes, YES! OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!! And very educational also. Thank You! ROFLMAO!! OH SWEET JESUS! What the hell is Virtual Abandoment. LMAO!!!!!
The sad fact is that there is NO perfect political or social system or structure, especially if your definition for perfection involves any sort of equality of outcome.
If you alter your definition then it still may not be possible, but might be somewhat feasible, but this would require giving up the utopian ideal in favor of other sorts of equality. We used to have it for privileged segments of the population but now lack it for all segments of the population. In its stead is something far from egalitarian.
The marxist movement coupled with a more generic decomposition of societal intellect (mostly from societal forgetfulness) has pretty much doomed the egalitarian roots of the USA in favor of more modern outcome based philosophies along with aristocratic/political class warfare. The end game is that the hybrid collapses and something else emerges. At some point after (or during depending on how long it takes), the real stuff hits the fan and there's no point in going there because it would be too depressing to discuss (and hence my love for Lakers basketball to take the mind off events that are perhaps 20-30 years away in the USA)
Never read Rand's Atlas or any of her works for that matter. I do understand Austrian economics and feel that model is far superior to what I was taught in my MBA courses. The powers that be, along with (from what I can tell) 80% of people on this blog are more statist politically. Statism is definitely a route to go but has always and will always lead to collapse. Other ideals have been tried but are ultimately led astray by the people themselves, and are also subject to collapse. Therefore my opening statement that there is no perfect social or political system because they will all fail - some just fail quicker and for different reasons.
Sort of like Laker opponents. Some look sexy for a while and may even bite the squad for a few years, but ultimately in the long run, they fail to measure up to the Lakers legacy. This holds true and will hold true for even the Celtics. Give us another 10-15 years and I promise the P&G will have more titles as a franchise... hell, we're already only 2 away from the lead.
This is long run averages converging over time.
You cannot stop it no matter how hard you try.
And that's how politics work also.... probably a little too deep a topic here but thought I'd chime in as well.
And...
GO FATTY!!
You can do it!!
WE ARE BEING PUNISHED FOR BEING SO SUCCESFUL ON THE OTHER THREAD!!! THEY MAY TAKE OUR INSTANT POSTING...BUT THEY WILL NEVER TAKE OUR...FREEEEEEEEEEEDOM!!!!!!
YOU PEOPLE DO REALIZE IF WE DON'T POST...YOU DON'T HAVE JOBS DON'T YOU!!!!
Mamba24,
"THEY MAY TAKE OUR INSTANT POSTING...BUT THEY WILL NEVER TAKE OUR...FREEEEEEEEEEEDOM!!!!!!"
I laughed for about 10 seconds. I can feel the power of your Lakeraholicism eroding your sanity. Been there, brother. Been there.
GO LAKERS!!!
Tim-4-Show,
Excellent post on politics and such.
It's easy to criticize anyone's take on how they think it should be, like Rand or Marxism in general, or socialism, etc, but after criticizing it how about explain the better alternative.
Your opening sentence said it all though.
I also agree with your comments on Austrian economics and the statist environment we find ourselves in here in the US.
As you said, this isn't the right environment for that kind of discourse, but just wanted to throw another 2 cents in and acknowledge your post.
And you even managed to equate it with the Lakers to an extent, very good!
Eroding it JON K? Eroding it? That bad boy is Eroded and gonnnnnnne!!!
LMAO!!!
Wow...that post on Magic/Bird was effen WICKED. I might have to read it after what Cap just wrote.
About Atlas Shrugged, the reason I read it in the first place was that a girl in my Thailand group was reading it and made the comment that her parents raised her according to the philosophies in the book, that they made a life-philosophy out of Rand's teachings. Well, since she was the most ungrateful, selfish, rude person that I had ever met, I had to read it to get an insight into her mind.
Her parents must have been crazy.
