Opening night: Lakers vs. Rockets

It'll be official in a few hours on NBA TV but for those of you who can't get near a set at 4 p.m. PDT, the Lakers will be opening the season on Oct. 26, hosting the Houston Rockets.

Not the most attractive opener out there ... but the not the worst one by any means.

There is, of course, the draw of former Laker Trevor Ariza  returning, and even more intriguing, the possible presence of Yao Ming. The Rockets center missed all of last season because of foot surgery. Last week, he told Chinese media that he might call it quits if his foot does not fully heal.

Hello Blog Fam!

Not bad, not bad - I always like Houston. They're feisty and play hard. Plus, always like seeing Ariza. Curious to see how Yao does, too.

Ah, August. That means it's only about a month and a half to preseason. I think I can last...

GO LAKERS!!!

@CAP’S GOGGLES... That was a great story about Magic, Bird, and MJ. It reminds me of another story that somebody posted on the blog about Larry Bird asking a taxi driver to take him to the best pickup games in LA. Apparently, a basketball freak, the taxi driver took Bird on a tour of all of the hot spots to play pickup games. To make a long story short, Bird proceeded to win a couple of thousand dollars from a host of LA street ballers who just couldn’t keep up with the slow flat-footed Celtics superstar. Bird supposedly gave the taxi driver a good tip and said take him to the airport because there were no more challenges in LA. My recollection may not be accurate and the story itself may not be true but there was never a better trash talker who could back it up like Larry Bird. I still remember him screwing with competitors during the 3-point shooting contests. Maybe somebody else has a better memory or remembers the post.

Just a bittersweet reminder of what "Nevor Again" Ariza lost out on by procrastinating.

Hey Shannon! WAKE UPPPPPPP!!!!!!

GO LAKERS!!!!!! ONE, TWO, THREE-PEAT TO THE SECOND POWER!!!!!!

Regarding Kobe-Shaq vs Kobe-Pau Lakers:

Kobe-Shaq Lakers probably had more talent, but the Kobe-Pau era Phil Jackson would play MIND GAMES before the matchup to suggest either Kobe or Shaq was the true star of the team, hence provoking the rivalry between Kobe and Shaq, causing the team to self-destruct.

The Kobe-Pau Lakers may not be as talented overall as the Kobe-Shaq or West-Baylor-Chamberlain teams but seem to make up for it by functioning better as a TEAM.

Kind of an odd opening night.

I don't see the joy in torturing Treavor Ariza.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

When I met Trevor, I told him "Welcome Home"

Since then, he must have forgotten where he came from. Watching him go down on opening night won't be very sweet compared to other opening night options, but I'll take it. The guy's agent, at his bequest, literally said there will be no home town discount.

Therefore, watch everyone else get rings with their money, while you only get the money. You also miss the adoration of the home town crowd - your very own brethren.

Sorry folks, but Traitor Ariza goes to Houston = FAIL

The other poster had it right.

CAP’S GOGGLES -

I concur...phenomenal post on the Dream Team...

anyone have Lebron's email...lol

I think 02 Lakers crush current squad. I think showtime 87 Lakers crush 02 squad.

For today's squad to overtake those of the past, they need an upgrade in a spot or two

Shannon will play on Christmas, but where?

Can't wait to see Barnes accidentally knee Shane in the groin.

Tim-4-Show,

"Sorry folks, but Traitor Ariza goes to Houston = FAIL"

I personally don't think that attitude is very cool. Treavor was a good Laker and made huge contributions in getting us a ring. I think he'd definitely rather be in Purple and Gold.

He just made a tragic mistake in choosing that agent.

Thriller is a definite upgrade over Treavor, but the idea of having Thriller start and Treavor come off the bench would be fantastic.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Mamba24,

Why did they shorten the bike ride from eight miles?

What!?!?! You mean some one from Cleveland could possibly throw a brick at Princess Jimmy as he rides his neato Shwinn down the road while taking it for sweet jumps? That would never happen in a town where people throw snow balls packed with 12 volt batteries with the intent to hurt another.

Well, in comparing the 3peat vs. b2b, I give more credit to Kobe-Shaq-Fisher era. If you include Kobe, then don't forget Fisher too in fairness to his contribution. I picked the Shaq & others not because of his dominance in the posts but the support group in the last 3 years.

99-00 Harper, Rice, Shaw, Horry, Fox, Salley and Green

00-01 Fox, Horry, Rider, Grant, Harper, Shaw and George

00-02 Fox, Horry, Hunter, George and Walker

On the issue of Shaq's jersey being hung at the rafters, I'll say it will happen but not in the immediate future. Perhaps, after the lifetime of JB or when Shaq becomes a matured retiree and no longer proud to utter: "mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa." His sharp words against the franchise, against the Laker fans would be forgotten, forgiven and move on to the next generation of Lakers.

If you are a Shaq fan and say that it should coincide with his retirement with the same frame of mind and attitude, I'm a shaq fan too but adheres to principle: "no way Jose, you can't dig recognition if you've already ruffled a lot of feathers". Got to fill that busted hole first and level it to the ground before moving on to the next task. No repentance, no forgiveness."

Tell me among those numbers retired on the rafters, who among them acted irresponsibly and became a Laker hater like Shaq O'Neil. Baylor, Goodrich, Chamberlain, Johnson, Jabbar, Worthy, West, who else? They joined other teams but never talked back at the Lakers. Those honored jerseys represents the Lakers Hall of Fame not hall of shame.

LeCreep's ploy won't work. Northeast Ohioans aren't quick to forgive and have powerful instinctual bullcrap identification senses.

AMEN!! and...OUT FREAKING STANDING MY MENTOR!!!

"Tell me among those numbers retired on the rafters, who among them acted irresponsibly and became a Laker hater like Shaq O'Neil."

That's actually a pretty solid point. I'm obviously in the "retire his number" camp - but it's a question of when. If he says he's retiring and then doesn't, it won't work. He'll have to be retired for a while (season or two). I don't think Dr Buss will keep him off the wall just because of his antics. He already got his reward for that in being forced off the team and going team to team to team like some schmuck scrub.

The truth is, he's a HOF player that played his BEST years in Los Angeles. That pretty much constitutes number retirement, even if the guy is supreme a-hole #1.

If my take on Trevor having to watch the ring ceremony instead of participating in it was too harsh, then... David Lee as agent = FAIL
Whatever. Point is, it was quite a big screw up and one that we'll be reminded of on opening night.

I too would have rather had BOTH Thriller and TA. With TA there would be no need for Barnes... and now that I think of it, is Barnes even on par with TA?

The truth is, he's a HOF player that played his BEST years in Los Angeles. That pretty much constitutes number retirement, even if the guy is supreme a-hole #1.

LOL! Yes, Yes, YES!...OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!!!

@LAKER TOM, MAGNIFICENT STORY ON BIRD SIR!!! THANKS!!!

Intesting to see on Opening night ...who will play more minutes? Yao(foot) vs Bynum(knee)

Oops typo..Interesting to see on Opening night...

Cap Goggles,

Thanks for posting that great story on MJ, Magic and Bird. I hope Jackie McMullen appreciates it cause you just helped her sell another book.

Magic was a big part of my decision to attend Michigan State. He was one year ahead of me and I knew MSU would win the National Championship the next year so I said I wanted to be. The reason I didn't purchase the book is I didn't think it would have any new information in. I also had grown wary of all the "Magic-Larry" talk as if they were the only great players in the 80's...

I'm not surprised by the dialogue you posted because in the late 80's Magic used to love to say it was an exclusive club...that only him and Larry was in. It was his way of calling out particularly Isiah and MJ. He would go on and on about "me and Larry". But the truth is MJ and Isiah were just as competitive, as he would later find out.

I think Isiah is overlooked for his accomplishments during that era. He is the only true little man to be the most dominant/alpha dog player on a championship team.

Sounds like Shaq is going to sign with the Celtics (according to Fanball.com).
Another reason to keep his jersey off the Staples Center wall.

The Infamous El Guapo/Mamba24,

As you two know, I have been your loyal secret agent on the Cavs and all-things-Cleveland for years. The Great Heavenly Father brought me home at the right time, but my reporting has proven to be accurate.

Hear me now! This thing with Princess Jimmy does not end well. Clevelanders can hate with all the vitriol of a Taliban member. These guys know how to HATE.

That much said, these guys really went to bat for LeBron. They could not have rooted any harder for a player. They honestly gave him their best. And now he turns his back on him in the WAY that he did (make note of that, it's not what he did, it was HOW he did it.)

There is zero anger in Cleveland for Z Iglauskas. None. They're grateful for his competing for Cleveland for so long.

LeCreep is a whole different ball of wax.

LeCreep has grown up being enabled like he was in Ohio. He won't get that anywhere else and he's now the most hated player in the league. No longer will he go to New York where people will kiss his feet.

It's not happening.

We all know how psychologically weak this guy is. He quit in the playoffs and he has single-handedly lost playoff series for the Cavs by folding under pressure.

The distractions of South Beach? The sudden animosity he feels everywhere he goes? Going back to Akron and needing security? It's going to take its toll.

This is the gall of this guy: Art Modell can't even step in the state of Ohio after leaving for Baltimore under the cover of darkness. LeCreep spat in Cleveland's face on live television and he thinks he's going to be able to "kick it" in Akron?

HELL NO!!!

He's more hated than Art Modell!

This does not end well and will serve as a lesson to society as to this is what happens when we turn talented individuals into monsters.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

I'm seriously beginning to dislike The Princess!
Posted by: mamba24 | August 03, 2010 at 07:38 AM

Mamba - I'm not a fan of Bron Bron either. However it does irk me when knowledgeable basketball people (like the majority of this blog) let their personal feelings interfere with their player evaluation. Lebron's got a lot of issues, but he is a great player.

The Shaq-Kobe Lakers were capable of being completely overpowering, they once went 16-1 in the playoffs. They often drifted during the season, but in the playoffs they were a powerhouse. Much more dominating than this team because Shaq was a totally dominant force in his prime and Kobe was a pretty impressive #2 option.

He's more hated than Art Modell!

If he's more hated than Art Modell, I fear for Princess Jimmy's safety and I am not kidding about this!!!

That 1,000 post day was the most fun I have had in a long while. I think I went a solid 12 hours before my energy gave out.

Interesting how the next morning the blog masters shut us down... who knows WHAT could have happened!
Posted by: JohnnyV | August 03, 2010 at 07:57 AM

I had a blast also and was thinking the exact same thing when the blog shut down.

I think Isiah is overlooked for his accomplishments during that era. He is the only true little man to be the most dominant/alpha dog player on a championship team.

That's true, but w/ Isiah on the Dream Team, there'd be NO DT. As the rumor say, both ,Magic & Jordan refused to play if Isiah was there...

That is why Magic Johnson is my first pick because he's far and away #1 in that category IMHO. There hasn't been a player in NBA history who could guard a quick point guard anyway and Magic Johnson was an underrated team defender, able to defend any position on the floor.
Posted by: KobeMVP888 | August 03, 2010 at 08:07 AM

Yes, Magic was an excellent team defender playing the passing lanes and doubling down on bigs. Something a lot of people don't remember is he led the league in steals in back to back seasons.

I learn a lot here. From LongTimeLakerFan I learned exactly where the line is between a good and a poor 3-point shooter:

"Kobe hit 37% of his 3's, which isn't bad. Fish only hit 36%."

So 37% is good, 36% is bad. I'll remember that.

Simply put the top 3 could defend and Score (even Russell, Russell's average increased in the playoffs). And laid their marks in NBA history more than anyone else with Kareem being the closest (only certain things from not winning titles after Big O and before Magic is a knock). Wilt the record holder, Russell the greatest winner, and MJ the combination of both but master of neither of those two.

Posted by: KB Blitz | August 03, 2010 at 12:01 AM
KB Blitz - I love your insight but I'm gonna have to respond to "the only knock" on Kareem when I have a little more time.

Here's the problem with Snaq Foo(d)...

If he were to play on the Lakers, he'd be a hindrance, especially in the locker room.

When he plays on another team, I think he's gotten to the point of being humble enough to accept his role and defer to the team's leader. I think he'd defer to Kobe and less so to Gasol, but he'd still be problematic.

There's no doubt in my mind that he'd help a team like the septics given his size. That's the one area that you can attack Miami, and therefore I feel he'd help them... but, Snaq dawning the green is like living in bizarro world. If (God forbid) he won a title while wearing Green, he might get taken off the great wall of retired jerseys in Staples....

But, cold day in hell when that happens - or shall I say, cold day in Kobe's body

Exactly Triangulator. I was thinking the same thing and can't agree more. What a great way for the NBA to stir up some drama and shove it in Trevor's face: see what you miss out on?

Hahhh! I love it!

Go Lakers!

Yeah Magic Phil - but I blame Daddy Rich (Chuck Daly) for that. No way I'm coaching that team if they leave off the guy that's giving me his blood, sweat and tears for 7-8 years. Isiah brought him two titles. Daly should have walked.

MagicPhil -

BTW I did listen to that Alexander O'Neal after you scolded me. I posted my review yesterday evening round 8pm PST if you want to check it out.

Good Point! but on the other hand there would never be another real "DREAM TEAM" and Chuck was getting up there in age and probably figured this would put a cap on his career. But I agree, if I had been Daley and they tried to keep Isiah off, I would have walked also!

welcome to Kobe Hating 101.

LRob,

You post some really good stuff.
I see you mentioned Isiah.
Earlier someone posted about the '92 Olympic Dream Team, an amazing collection of talent on one team, and just for fun I traveled back in time for a few minutes and came across this:

http://www.interbasket.net/players/usa/dreamteam.htm

They have an interesting couple of paragraphs about Isaah which supports your view, but probably nothing new.

OMG - I TOLD you guys - the Star Trek one was in university & this guy took me to it on a first (AND HELL TO THE YES LAST) date.

The Farscape one was with hubby and we went to get into the auction - got some great original drawings / storyboards.

Let it go.

LOL!!!

See LRob I told you Justa had a durn good reason for going to those conventions...auctions and paintings! *wink* *wink*, Very Good Justa, You won't hear a peep about it again from me. Carry On!

Saw in Miami Herald today that the NBA will have the Heat vs Lakers on Christmas Day & that is set!

Lewstrs...Hope your right about Brett, but I really think his ankle isn't that great after the surgery he had. Stupid Saints knocked the crap out him and nothing was called. Kinda sounds like me and the referees, we never lose a game I just blame it on the Refs. My husband gets mad at me, but oh well, I feel better.

THE PERFECT SOLUTION TO THE SHANNON BROWN SITUATION IS THIS. SIGN AND TRADE SHANNON BROWN TO A 3 YEAR 4,000.00 AND Sasha Vujacic's $5,475,11 (ONE YEAR LEFT CONTRACT) TO THE KNICKS FOR Kelenna Azubuike'S $3,364,000 (ONE YEAR LEFT CONTRACT) AND TRACY MCGRADY 3 YEAR 4,000.00 and cash back from the Knicks. THAT WAY THE LAKERS WOULD SAVE $1.500.000 is salary and WITH THE SALARY CAP EXTRA MONEY THEY WILL SAVE $3,000.000 HAVE THE SECOND TEAM SCORER THEY NEED IN TRACY MCGRADY AND A STRONG ATHLETIC BACKUP FOR IN AZUBUIKE FOR THIS SEASON IF MCGRADY GETS re injured . IF THE LAKERS COULD PULL THAT OFF THEY WOULD HAVE THE STRENGTH AND ATHLETICISM IN THEIR SECOND TEAM THAT THEY NEED TO GO UP AGAINST ANY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE

LAKERS102 - why are you screaming at us?

CAUSE SOMEONE NEEDS TO HEAR THIS LOUD AND CLEAR LOL

Most of you fans always refer to the past and your wrong. Why? Different teams, players, etc. Even most of today's and past players have said that the teams and players are better as a group. It would not have been as easy for the Lakers to go on a 33 winning streak simple because they would have run into better teams than in those days. You can never compare the past to the present because of different teams make up and as a group, the players today are better than yesterdays.

LOL!! Rub that bling in Trevor's traitor ass face. He said he wanted to return but then flip flopped and said no hometown discount but instead I want $50 million now. Say what? He could have told his agent to make peace with Mitch or he could have did it himself but he said that he was a loyal person. So instead of choosing to stay loyal to the franchise that saved his career he choose to disrespected us. Ronnie Turiaf is cool peoples and he stays not to far from my house so he will always get love but to hell with Trevor and anyone else who chooses their agent over The Show.

I don't have any hard feelings towards Trevor.
He did what he thought best based on the info he had at the time. We don't really know what Trevor knew during the negotiations and appears it's possible the Lakers didn't want him back at all because they wanted Ron more.
Can't fault Trevor for that and I hope he does well, except when he plays the Lakers.

snaq to the keltics?? guesis s anything is possible. Dude gonna outdo barkley with his shameless trek from team to team. It's good that miami has more competition in the conference....we'll be waiting for whomever surfaces come finals time.

As for laquit's letter? It's not genuine or original. It's a blatant copy of z's letter. I can't see laquit having the mental capacity to write the letter's contents. No third person references, me, me, me talk....no, can't be his words. e's got to be one of the biggest phonies ever. I hear delonte west just got waived.....Mitch??

"I hear delonte west just got waived.....Mitch??"

The only value Delonte had for the Lakers was if Minnesota would take Sasha in a trade. The lakers were planning on waiving Delonte themselves and paying him the $500K, but saving Sasha's salary in the process.
I hope we don't pivk him up.

LAKERS102,

I hear you loud and clear, I like Azubuike, but not sure about McGravy. I mean, he would be better than Sasha, but would want way more playing time. Kelenna, on the other hand, is used to coming off the bench and being a role player that can contribute significantly.

^^^^^^^^^^^

I hope we dont pivk him up was supposed to be: I hope we don't pick him up.

The rockets will be one of the toughest match-ups for the lakers, so everyone that is downplaying Houston will get whats coming and it might not just be in the first game of the season, but rather in the WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS!

Tmac is waiting to see what the lakers will do with brown and vujacic. if the lakers do not sign brown then i say bring in tmac. also, i say keep vujacic until the trade deadline. plus the lakers might get an exception because walton in injured.
2010-2011 Roster
PG- FISHER/BLAKE
SG- BRYANT/TMAC/VUJACIC
SF- ARTEST/BARNES/EBANKS
PF- GASOL/ODOM/CARACTER
C- BYNUM/RATLIFF

Can somebody please verify to me that not ONE Laker ever played with a rival Boston bean?

can't wait for the cermony of the championship rings being givin once again...Does Adam Morrison get one too..??

Why Lakers playing Houston opening night? Maybe NBA knows T-Mac to the Lakers is a done deal. Thoughts??

i think this rockets team will give the lakers a harder time than many think. they're like pesky hornets who've had a run of crummy luck (injuries) and i feel they're due for a win. this matchup will also draw a lot of viewers globally especially from china. this matchup makes a lot of sense. looking forward to it.
