Lakers to meet Shaq and Boston in January

We already know that the Lakers will play the loaded Miami Heat with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Boshon Christmas Day at Staples Center. So guess what the next high-profile Lakers home game of almost equal interest will be?

It will be against The Big Turncoat. The Big We Hate You Even More. The Big How Could Play For Them?

Yep, you got it.

Shaquille O'Neal will come to town with the dreaded and hated Boston Celtics on Jan. 30 to face Kobe Bryantand  friends at Staples Center, NBA sources told The Times. The Lakers will play at Boston on Feb. 10.

The NBA will announce its complete schedule Tuesday.

The Lakers just defeated the Celtics in the NBA Finals in June. The Lakers now have 16 NBA championships, one behind the all-time leading Celtics (17).

It's a heated rivalry, the best the NBA has to offer.

Now with The Big Leprechaunadded to the mix, the fire is just that much hotter -- at least in the eyes of Lakers fans who still have a healthy dislike for O'Neal.

O'Neal won three NBA championships with the Lakers -- and one with the Heat -- and is seeking his fifth title.

Right now, Bryant has five championships, one more than Shaq, something Kobe delighted in expressing after the Lakers won the title in June.

GO KOBE!!!!!

Do you think we should hate the geriatric Leprechauns? or pity them because the Green Monster would need a cane by January. He has gouty arthritis on that Big Toe. He can longer last three months without getting injured. Celtics should also play Bill Russell.

To neutralize the veteran status of the Celtics, I heard the Heat are re-signing the former side kick of Shrek, that's Penny Hardaway. Lakers should suit Kareem too. It will be blast from the past.

I am happy for these disciples of MM and how they adore and worship their leader is a great testimony of MMs hold on these poor souls..

Though I know most on this blog consider the reg. season as nothing more than practice, this matchup does offer some level of interest, for me at least. I always enjoy watching these 2 longtime rivals battle it out. Plus now that the Cs have acquired Shaq, makes it that much more appealing for me.

Let's go Ls...all the way to a 3-peat!!!!!

Geriatrics?? I think not!!

Giant Bald,

It was reported that Sheed declared to stay retired than come back to the Celts as Big Shamerock predicted. 'Sheed being a true professional is willing to forfeit his two more years under contract than risk his limbs of possible major injury like breaking those brittle bones. In the case of BS, he is playing for 1.4M in order to put more gas on his TV ratings Shaq vs ___ anybody. In fact, he went ballistic to Jim Rome as part of that act. It is all for the show because there is more money in promo than playing serious basketball. Well, the Celtics are so desperate to be at par with the Heat so they grabbed any Tom Dick and Harry out there. Think about it.

Shaq and Wafer with Boston? Dang, add Smush, Crittenton and Cook and they'll be all set for Lakers East.

I don't blame a guy for wanting to play on a good team, but Shaq proved that he was just 'passing thru' LA, by signing with our arche-enemy. That's kindof like dating the bad gf as soon as you can after you break up with her. Mitch must have told shaq 'no way' so shaq said 'we'll see'.

Well Phil Kobe and Crew why not run play after play to make shaq move his feet on defense? Expose him for the imposter, poser that he is. Show him and the national TV viewing audience that he can't defend anyone, that he is a defensive liability. Dare I say to Bynum... pull the chair on Shaq and watch him fall. I can't say that I would be happy to laugh at his malady. But showing the Celtics and their fans what they have may be a good silencer.

By the way, how long before he calls Rondo his little brother, and says he will teach him about the game, and Rondo tells him to eff off!

It will be Phils last regular season in the Garden and Fatty will be there.

I wonder what kind of a send off Phil will get?

For sure, Shaq will emcee the event.

For his good bye gift to remember them, an old piece of wood from the floor? One of Red's old stogies? The 'terrible towel' with that Boston buffoon waving it to the crowd as he hands to PJ?

a good game to watch, but not really very important, no more than the other 81 anyway...

Good lord, those criticizing Magic for taking part in a pickup game with the president - there is no other way to put it - are IDIOTS!

Don't forget Kids in the Hall. Those guys were AWESOME!

@Humanomaly - Barnes will just physically abuse the smaller guards and even if he gets tossed, the Lakers are deep enough that that is not an issue.
---------
Humanomaly,

Yes, Barnes can physically abuse smaller guards to the point of getting tossed. But the initial statement by MM was that "Barnes could take on a speedy guard". When I think of speedy guards I think of Brooks, Jennings, Rose, Beaubois, Lawson, Westbrook, etc. I assuming that Blake, Fish or Shannon will be in the game at point guard. Who will they guard while Barnes is chasing a speedster around? Barnes strength is guarding wings not chasing speedsters around. Either way I don't mind Barnes being physical. But I'm not an advocate of dirty play, flagrant fouls or guys getting tossed. We're the Lakers not the Celtics.

For the record here are Barnes "hot head" stats from the last few years...

2008 - 7 techs/5 flagrants/0 DQ - the 5 flagrants lead the league
2009 - 10 techs/1 flagrants/2 DQ
2010 - 10 techs/0 flagrants/1 DQ

Compare with RonRon

2008 - 8 techs/0 flagrants/1 DQ
2009 - 4 techs/0 flagrants/0 DQ
2010 - 6 techs/0 flagrants/0 DQ

Barnes is one of the league leaders in techs/per minute the last few seasons. He'll need to take a page from Thriller and get better at playing with an edge without getting all the techs.

Shaq was not 'passing thru' LA, he simply didn't get an offer from LA at all. We don't want him here. So I think he did the right thing for him. I don't blame him.

LRob, Barnes will be a different player once he wears the PnG jersey, just like Ron. PJ will not tolerate dirty game, so I think Barnes will adjust his defense skills.

Giant Green Bald,

Yes, the Lakers are older than the C's on average, but our key players are still performing closer to their peak...
Kobe game is down slightly but he's still playing at an elite level. Pau is in his prime. Ron Ron and LO are on the downside but still playing close to prime. Fish is well past prime but only a role player to us. Compare that to KG and Ray Ray both showing noticeable decline....(at times it almost make me cringe watching KG drag that knee around) Pierce is also was not nearly as effectively as he was in 08...don't know how much was due to injuries...so I'll hold my opinion on him.

It's not totally about age but about effectiveness!

I agree that PJ will chill him out some. My biggest fear with Barnes are that people are expecting too much from him. It seems like some are are expecting Michael Cooper in his prime (and not MC from Confunkshun...lol...had to throw that in) type performances.

LRob, yeah...some people are expecting way too much...But I think PJ is what matters when it comes to a player. A guy can be awesome or horrible, depending on how the coach will use him. PJ will not tolerate "the-old-Barnes-attitude". It's time for Barnes to understand what's good on his bball and what's bad. Same as Ron.
It's time for him to see the light...

Shaq signing with the Celtics proves the folly of Darth Stern's scheduling of the Miami Heat at Los Angeles on Christmas Day.

The real rivalry is the Lakers vs Celtics.

Seriously. Neither Kobe nor LeBron considers the other to be a rival. Stern has created a mannequin with silicone implants. The Christmas Day game is just as artificial.

Agree Rick, but the Christmas day game is more for the casual fan that diehards like us. While our beloved Lakers is a given, the casual fans much rather see Miami than Boston.

I dont think the Celtics are taking kindly to all the talk that Miami is the class of the East. Adding Shaq further proves that. By playoff time if all 3 are healthy, the combination of Perkins, and the O Neals are going to prove too much Miami. Id take Boston any day for the final rematch and #17 for the Lakers.

Battle of the has beens....outto be interesting.....Y'all web site sucks....can't find a LBJ or Wade jersey nowhere on it.

Bryan Adams? How did he come up. He's pretty cheesy guys, but that makes him perfect to workout to. I run 15-20 miles a week and there's usually 5 or so Bryan Adams songs playing during each run. He's just cheesy enough to get you thru the last mile when no other earthly stimulican get you past the blood-curdling pain in your claves. My favorites are "One Night Love Affair," "Run to You" "Summer of 69." All those songs off "Reckless" play well when it's exercize time.

And...well, since my best friend of 25 years died last night, I'll toast his memory with a Bryan Adams song. This was a hit when we were so much younger. To Chuck Heart, RIP brother. (I don't know what this video is about, but the song is great): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhmQTROY59M

Wes

What is it with the Miami trolls not being able to put a complete sentence together? I think there is some truth to the idea that Miami has a transient fan base; that these aren't life-long basketball fans by any means, but they're certianly up for a good party. And who can blame them? I don't, too much. But you do get a new appreciation for the--I hate to say it--intelligence of the Boston fan. Maybe that's not the right phrase to use, but the Boston fan at least knows about the sport and knows some history. The Miami fan seems like he just busted out of a traveling bigfoot exhibition in the deep south somewhere.

Wes

SHAQ SHOULD BE CALL BIG LAZY

Celtics blog says Rasheed is retiring. Jermane O'Neill will help that team. Shaq helped Cleveland last year and they had the best record. Perkins should be 70% by playoff time. Garnett will be better. All in all, a solid front line of big men for the Celtics. Real competition for Pau, Bynum, and Odom.

Playing Boston always raises my interest. It will enhance the New Year's eve celebrations. Bring them on!!

You all forgot Steve Nash and I believe Michael J Fox is from Canada!!

Wes,

Sorry to hear about your loss. Sympathy and prayers to and the family of your friend.

Bryan Adams came up because the discussion was all things Canadian. Cheesy is good sometimes, especially if its helping you stay in shape.

LRob,

>>> the casual fans much rather see Miami than Boston.

I think that's an unprovable assumption. "The Decision" made LBJ the most unpopular NBA player in America after he stiffed the Cavs, the Bulls, the Knicks, and lord knows who else. D-Wade has a strong fan base in Miami but I'm not sure where else. Bosh was playing for the lowly Raptors.

The Celtics have their own 3 Amigos, plus Rondo, plus Shaq and have been in the Finals two of the last 3 years.

Stern may believe all the hype he's created, but the "casual" fan on Christmas is likely to be preoccupied with how fast they can exchange that ugly sweater their Aunt Martha stiffed them with or how to grab the drumstick when their big brother is reaching for the mashed potatoes.

Hey Troll, didn't we run you off already???

Battle of the has-beens sure is a lot better than a battle with the WILL-NOTS.

As far as our website is concerned, you obviously didn't look hard enough, you can find LBJ, Wade and Bosh Jerseys... but they're sold as doormats, kitty litter liners, toilet paper and as feminine napkins (but don't work too well as those because they can't stop any kind of flow due to lack of any discernable defense).

All this Bryan Adams talk lately has "Put me in a mood." Yes, Bryan Adams music is cheasy and it's not something I listen to much, but I admit there are times....

I had one of his CD/tapes in the 80's "18 until I die".

Bryan Adams reminds me a bit of Mamba24's roll calls and game day preparation. For you all I offer this song on a Lakers game day:

We're gonna Win
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_elfKMnA1zQ

Rick Friedman,

you wrote: Seriously. Neither Kobe nor LeBron considers the other to be a rival. Stern has created a mannequin with silicone implants. The Christmas Day game is just as artificial.

my response: Actually, I think LeBron does consider Kobe to be his rival.
I believe this came out last Christmas. Kobe, on the other hand, does not
believe this. I *think* Kobe said, "In order to have a rivalry you have to
meet in the playoffs."

That's my remembrance, but it's suspect. :)

Once again, a little perspective here ladies and gentlemen.

DBDH!

Good morning Mamba24 & the fabulous Laker morning CRUE!!

Mamba24 - hope your "emergency" yesterday has been resolved, and that all is well now.

Wes - so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you.

Rick my BFF - your mannequin comment was hilarious! It's true. There's no rivalry with Miami. Kobe's comment was right - if you don't meet in the Finals, it's not a rivalry. (You're memory ain't that bad, hobbit)!

Just fyi, the Canada conversation that started between Jon K and I was all in fun. There was no ill intent at all - we were messing with each other. I don't think anyone should be insulted by what was said. People need to be able to laugh at themselves & others in a spirit of good-natured-ness (yes that's a word!) and fun. We all pretty much "know" each other on here, and we DEF know when someone's being mean spirited. I'm sure you all agree that was not the case yesterday. So chillax peeps! It's all good! (And don't worry. I got this. Jon K doesn't even know the level of hurt that's gonna be put upon him. Let's just say it will involve vodka, percoset, Pepsi, cats and throat punching. Not necessarily in that order). LMAO!

While we may not consider Kobe and Labron rivals, and perhaps Kobe and Labron don't consider themselves rivals, or one of them does, no matter.
I think many fans do consider them rivals and that's one of the reasons for the Xmas day game.

Miami and LBJ have already generated a tremendous amount of hype and the season hasn't even started yet. I agree the casual fan would prefer to see Miami though as Rick said it is an unprovable assumption, but then, most of the posts are just opinion anyway.
I am looking forward to Xmas day game.

The way I look at it Green, the bench, 25, 25, 19, 26, 24, and 38, which rounds out the useless, only Shaq is the useful in that lineup. With that said, 3B's, 30, 25, 30, is +4, +~3.1, and +5 and lastly +6 years of invaluable experience on the court. Those intangibles can't be taught, that Boston bench is about as useful as ours last year making our bench the most useful one in those crucial last 2 quarters with the game on the line, which we could have used last time around. We will be helping ourselves to double servings of rebounding, shooting from outside in waves, and defense. Just the things the doctor ordered.

TMac is a Piston. Probably means the Pistons have found a taker for Rip's bad contract.

Rick,
True, its only an assumption right now. But the proof will be in the ratings. The casual fan wants excitement. Heck as an diehard fan...even I prefer (in the regular season) to watch more uptempo exciting play vs a defensive wrestling match. Miami is the team people will love to hate. But it'll also be the team people will watch...just like your beloved Yankees.

celtic bigs:

shaquille
jermaine oneal

im still trying to figure out who has the advantage over the other in bigs here.

given that we only have a 1/2 bynum perenially, odom will basically show up for only 1/2 the games, and theo is 40 yrs old and caracter is a noob.

kg has old knees and one year older, shaq is 40 yrs old but still a Huge presence both mentally and physically, perkins will be recovering, and jermaine will rack some injury perhaps as well.

Shaq " the Big Minimum" O'neal coming to town on 30 Jan. bring it on.

On the real, I think it's time to stop mentioning Shaq in the same sense as the Lakers. Shaq playing against LA now is not what it was 2-3 yrs ago. Shaq is missing a step adn the Lakers have since won 2 outta 3 championships since his departure. Shaq was great in LA and it's only left to speculation, just how many they "could have" won but that is irrelevant now. they are on the verge of a repeat and, although they may have to beat Shaq and his new found friends - it's on the horizon for a Laker 3peat for the second time.
