Lakers sign draft pick Derrick Caracter

The Lakers announced Friday that they signed second-round draft pick Derrick Caracter.

Caracter, a 6-foot-8 power forward, signed a two-year contract worth about $1.1 million in which just the first year at $473,604 is guaranteed.

Caracter played one season at the University of Texas El Paso before the Lakers selected him with the 58th overall pick in the second round.

Caracter averaged 15.4 points and 8.6 rebounds for the Lakers on their summer league team in Las Vegas.

ALL RIGHT!!!!!
Now we need to sign Ebanks.
Cheers.

...and, by signing Ebanks, we'll have a 14 player roster, right?
That's what Mitch said, 14 players.

(29) MAGIC PHIL - Regarding Dr Buss, what can I say besides that he is THE BEST OWNER EVER. PERIOD. Dr Buss seems to like winning over profit, and that says it all. If there's one thing we all need to tell him is THANK YOU DR BUSS!!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers. HOW I BECAME A LAKERS FAN Growing up in the 70's, we didn't have too much to do, so one of my favorite things was the Harlem Globetrotters. They used to come to our city once a year, and I was always there. What they did w/ the bball was amazing. I knew it was all setup, but I still loved just to see those things. By that time, the NBA and FIBA were 2 different things. Rules were different, etc...The NBA was not appealing for me, the "effective" bball didn't sparkle my eyes...Until I saw Magic Johnson. When I first saw Magic play, that was the 1980 season, I was IN SHOCK. The guy plays for the NBA, but at the same time, he was doing some globetrotters stuff. That was it! Showtime! I was involved with other things (volleyball...) and I didn't follow him like I wanted, but in 1985 I decided to watch the entire NBA season for the 1st time. Magic was awesome...no words can describe what I saw...We won, etc... Now I know that the reason I'm a Laker is not only Magic, it is Dr. Buss! For me, SHOWTIME is more important than even winning. To play the game in a fair/square way, in a beautiful way, this is what I call GREATNESS!!!! The Lakers, Magic, Kobe and Dr. Buss stands for everything I believe in basketball. Excellence, greatness and of course, winning! I can't say THANKS DR BUSS enough....I think I'm gonna cry.....Nah..GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(34) FRMKT - Lakers... Still relevant after all these years! Congrats to Buss, Jerry and Magic - IN BUSS WE TRUST
(35) SAMLL - Congrats, Dr. Buss! You're the best owner of the best franchise! You deserve it! These words from Buss caught my eye: "I was blessed with having multiple Hall of Famers around me," he said, "starting with Bill Sharman and Jerry West and then going on to Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. Then, you get players like Magic, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and Kobe Bryant. Probably nobody in my 31-year period has been surrounded by as many Hall of Fame people and future Hall of Famers as I have."Hmmm... no mention of Snaq... methinks the Big Old Baby has to apologize to Buss before he can see his number retired. Groveling is good, too.

(37) TEAMN - Dr. Buss, Don't know if anyone from the team reads this blog, but I wanted to say thank you for your perseverance, your intelligence, and your commitment to the fans. You have given us so much to cheer for it is almost unbelievable. And, you gave us the Laker girls. That alone is HoF worthy.

Now it gets interesting. 14 players on the team – but only 12 on the starting roster. I hope Phil doesn’t decide ahead of time that Ebanks and Caracter are the odd men out simply by virtue of being rookies. Set aside Kobe, Pau, Ron, Drew, Lamar, Fish, and Blake, and there are five available slots on the active roster. I say let the remaining seven players COMPETE for those 5 slots. If Ebanks and Caracter out-hustle and out-play some of the others, then the two rooks earn their place on the active roster. No free rides to some of the vets.

Is Caracter 6-8 or 6-9???

Puh-lease. It's Phil Jackson. Unless one of the other 12 players is injured, Ebanks and Caracter will be sporting lots of suits to games this year.

Mamba24....please put me on the Dr. Jerry bandwagon. Dr. Buss has always given me the sense that he really loves HIS team. It's more than a business with him, the Lakers are his calling.

I don't know if Caracter's body is more like Hakeem Olajuwon or Charles Barkley..To me, he is more of Olajawon, and hopefully he plays like him.

This guy is a steal. Euro teams were scouting him at a higher offer than the Lakers, he chose the purple and gold and a Coach who doesn't trust rookies. One advantage of good rookies, they make your regular players work hard during practices.

Phil, I hope you tweak that recalcitrance in distrusting rookies. You need them during the long winding season while reserving the energy of veteran players.

It's really the BEST offseason moves.great job,Mitch.tho we have 14 players on our roster but i still believe that the lakers is in a wait and see mode right now with regards to vuyacic and luke.if vuyacic cant deliver even in his last year of the contract, expect him to be traded before the trade deadline.with regards to luke,if he can't prove that he can still play without his injuries this year, expect the management to buyout his contract.if that will happen, both Ebanks and Caracter will occupy the 11th and 12th roster spot before the NBA all-star week.

It won't be a bad idea if Kobe introduces Hakeem to Caracter to give him some lessons this summer.

how about introducing hakeem not only to caracter but to bynum? by having combination of hakeem and kareem's moves into his arsenal, bynum could become extremely versatile.

Times are changing..

From the soft days of 2008 Gasol and Odom to the toughness of 2011 Bynum, Caracter, Ratliff, Artest and Barnes.

The inside tandem toughness of Bynum and Caracter could be better than Gasol and Odom finesse play in a few years.

I think Walton is more likely to be in suits next year than Ebanks or Caracter.

===================
I agree but think the rooks will be spending time in D-League to continue playing and learning than bench sitting.

kobe stil gon prevail next year no matter who da heat have kobe is hands down da best thang smokin like young dro

kobe is da best heat gon need mo dan da 3 da got

kobe is god 2 me

the next best move for the lakers : trade sasha and buy out luke's contract, no disrespect but they have a good time in lakers bench, guys, it's time to move on .

lakers need to move walton to center and get rid of kobe and get kareem abdul jabbar back with west and baylor

Well it is agreed that Mitch had a championship season with his intelligent off season moves. His draft picks show his ability to size up talent. We really don't need anything else, except may be a little luck this coming season to 3-peat one more time. The only other move that Mitch could make to secure his place in Laker basketball history would be to make the behind the seen moves, to secure a trade for the rights to the contract of Ricky Rubio, before Kobe gets too old for them to share a championship. He has made clear that he doesn't want to play in Minnesota, who really does? Yes some of us Laker fans are spoiled. But that's what our great owner, team and management has done to us.

If the Lakers can find a taker, the Machine will be moved. Given the Walton family history of bad backs, I don't think Luke will be long for this season. Even with those changes, Ebanks and Caracter are at best 11 and 12 on the bench and we all remember the minutes Mbenga and Morrison got last year....

Hey guys, please let me know of your take on this matter.now that the lakers signes 14 players,is Mitch already gone for a quality vacation? Is he still looking to find for players to invite for the training camp?is there any player who would bother to join the camp knowing that the line-up is already set at 14?

I've read that Lakers will play a game with FC Barcelona in Spain this coming Oct 7 against who else but Ricky Rubio.Who knows,Mitch will bring his magic and convince Ricky Rubio to only play for us in the NBA.Especially that I've learned that Ricky Rubio is also an avid fan of the Lakers plus he will be playing with Pau Gasol.Do it,Mitch.

mitch= hall of fame GM someday?

"Machine will do good this year... contract year... promise. Machine sorry he broken for almost two seasons. Machine worried that he will get traded to city with no direct flights from Moscow so to make hard for Machines's girl friend to see Machine. This make machine sad and will make necessary recalibrations. Machine will hit corner three from Kobe double team and make Kobe love Machine again.

Machine back for 2011!

Sincerely Machine."
