Kind of spoils the fun, since, by then, we'll know if that in MIA worked out or not. If it don't I won't waste my time. If it will, it'd even outdo MIA v CLE in ratings and provide for great X-Mas Ent.

I smell another year from the "best-defenders", Bennet Salvatore & cia...

Do you guys think that the refs are going to GIVE the season to the Meat?
-
Last season, if it wasn't for Delonte, we'd be in trouble.

I DONT WANT NO DELONTE WEST. That guy has herpes and Kobe's mom is still pretty decent looking. The only reason it would be cool would be the mock-factor when LA plays Lebron.

yellofever,

You forgot to mention Michael Jordan's father being murdered under very mysterious circumstances not long after he refused to pay a bookie $250,000 he owed him.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

I didn't see if yellowfever mentioned the fact that he was suspended from the NBA those two years he played baseball. Anyone who thinks otherwise, ask yourself this- Would MJ the egomaniac grudge holding psycho take two years off in his prime voluntarily? If you believe he did, you probably believe fox news.

Forget about Miami...we want Boston.

Edwin,

I agree with your sentiment on Shaq. He must humble himself and apologize to JB to make amends. I believe he will. Shaq craves attention and wants to be loved. The Lakers is the only franchise that would entertain retiring his number...and trust me he's not going to miss out on that. He'll also go into the HOF as a Laker.

I don't know if the Miami Heat deserves that Christmas game at Staples. I was actually looking forward to a Lakers-Celtics game.

I guess they think they could get a better rating with a Lakers/Heat game than a Lakers/Celtics game.

I don't think Shaq going to the Celtics hurts his Laker legacy at all. In fact, it probably helps it. I think seeing Shaq as a gracious loser were it ever to come to that, is a better and more enduring memory than his demanding to be paid after jumping 3 inches to dunk in Dr Buss' presence. Wow.

Let Shaq lose graciously to the Lakers, and I think Laker fans can forgive him for his ungracious behavior he showed toward the franchise after he left. That stuff was ugly and uncalled for and it went on for years.

But Shaq was beloved while he was here, and I think it'll be that Shaq people remember, not the baby he's been since.

Wes

LRob, read your Alex O'Neal review.
Man, if you can squeeze 2-3 good songs out of the new CD, I think is good. I know, his voice is long gone and there's no Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis anymore. I'll see if I can find the album.

Thanks for the review!!!!

Average age of Boston's starting 5 (J O'Neal starting)= 31.6

Average age of Boston's starting 5 (Shaq starting)= 32.8

Factoring out Rondo's age (24):
With J O'Neal starting= 33.5
With Shaq starting=35

JonK,

You said, "Hear me now! This thing with Princess Jimmy does not end well."

You also said, "We all know how psychologically weak this guy is. He quit in the playoffs and he has single-handedly lost playoff series for the Cavs by folding under pressure."

So my question is what does this thing will not end well mean? Can you be more specific. Are you saying he'll never win a championship? Are you saying the pressure will be too much and he'll retire prematurely? He'll have a nervous breakdown? Not end well is very vague. Please share a little more details in your projections.

And remember while you're making your projections this is the same man that accomplished the following:

1. Posted 25pts/6reb/9ass/4 stls in his first NBA game
2. Triple double of 32/11/11 in first playoff game
3. Scored 48 pts and 25 STRAIGHT points in 2007 conference finals vs. Detroit - on the road.
4. Led a supreme underdog team to finals in 2007
5. Scored 49 pts in game 1 loss in 2009 conference finals. Hit game winning 3pt in gm 2 win.
6. Career reg season avg are 28/7/7 and career playoff avg are 29/8/7
7. All NBA 6 out of 7 seasons (4 times 1st team/2 times 2nd team).
8. Two time MVP

So 37% is good, 36% is bad. I'll remember that.

Do I detect a gotcha moment!

welcome to Kobe Hating 101.
Posted by: Homer J Simpson | August 03, 2010 at 02:30 PM

Homer, Yep that's what this whole Lebron thing reminds me of. People LUVED Kobe - then his world came crumbling down in 03 and the haters reviled in it and predicted he was toast.

Excellent! Another meaningless Christmas Day practice game that the Lakers won't feel like playing again. The best part for me? I will sell my tickets and this one meaningless early season game will finance about 5 games that count in the Real Season. I'll hang with my family and watch it on TV!

Go Lakers! #17 coming up STRONG!!

Interesting, the NBA is not highlighting a Lakers-Celtics game this season

I see you mentioned Isiah. Earlier someone posted about the '92 Olympic Dream Team, an amazing collection of talent on one team, and just for fun I traveled back in time for a few minutes and came across this:

http://www.interbasket.net/players/usa/dreamteam.htm

They have an interesting couple of paragraphs about Isaah which supports your view, but probably nothing new.
Posted by: Art - FL Laker Fan | August 03, 2010 at 02:30 PM

Art - Thanks for the article. Yep I remember watching Isiah destroy Stockton with 44pts that night. Then Karl Malone gave him the stitches the next game. But the story didn't end there. The next year when the Pistons played Utah Isiah dropped another 40pts on Stockton. And this was the 92-93 season when Isiah was one year away from retiring.

OMG - I TOLD you guys - the Star Trek one was in university & this guy took me to it on a first (AND HELL TO THE YES LAST) date.
The Farscape one was with hubby and we went to get into the auction - got some great original drawings / storyboards.
Let it go. LOL!!!

Another word shall not be uttered...Lol

LRob - thanks for reposting my post to not post this anymore..... You're killing me people.

Mamba24 - I'll rent it if/when I come across it.

complex - oh man - you're in so much trouble. And not just from the little woman.

You know how the NBA is. A Finals rematch of Lakers/Celtics on X-mas would've been great but we must give attention to Queen James wherever he goes. Plus, all the Lebron lovers on ESPN will have "proof" that the torch is being passed should Lebron's team beat Kobe's. Ugh! Funny thing is, even should the Heat win the title (not happening but just sayin'...), who gets the "torch"? Bron', who hasn't won anything, or Wade (who single-handedly torched Dallas into choking in the Finals)?

Hopefully, it will go better than last Christmas when the fans at Staples center embarrassed us all.

Man, if you can squeeze 2-3 good songs out of the new CD, I think is good. I know, his voice is long gone and there's no Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis anymore. I'll see if I can find the album. Thanks for the review!!!!

No prob, I just peeked at you tube and saw 3 of the cuts posted there....
I'm Back, My House and I Found True Love.

@ FATTY… Nope, although I love that movie and both guys could play. This was a story related by a blogger, no link, just that he heard. Bird supposedly played all day and challenged everybody on every court he went to, most of the big name courts with the best street players. Don’t know if the story was true but anybody who knew Bird could see it really happening. Hard to pick any small forward ever ahead of him even though he was a Celtic. I mean, in his own way, he is a stud compared to LeBron. It amazes me to hear people say he is a winner. That is the fallacy I hate.
~
As for MJ and Jordan, it’s the eerie similarities in their game and drives that makes people compare them. They played the same position the same way more than the differences in their games. So it’s valid in my mind to compare them. Right now, MJ is still the best, even though the guy got a total pass from the same media that crucified Kobe unfairly. But I think Kobe will surpass him before he hangs up his sneakers.
~
Shaq as a Celtic. What else would you expect from that disappointing buffoon of a player and person? I actually like it because he is going to really help the Celtic front court overpower Bosh et al. It’s going to be the Celtics trying to prevent the Lakers from tying with their 16th NBA title. The Lakers will sweep the Celtics with a dominant Kobe and healthy Drew, not even needing the Home Court Advantage they won with best record.

I'm disgusted by this potential Big Leprechaun possibility. Actually ready to puke disgusted. What a ho. He obviously does not have what it takes to be a true Laker legend. I'm not discounting his contribution to the first 3-peat. I'm just saying that his blood has never been purple & gold, and if this goes down it never will be.

Kobe would never stoop to this. Neither would any other great Laker. You don't go from the Royal Purple & Gold to green. Fricken green??? The color and personality of slime??? Aw hell no.

I've never bought into the idea you should compare players of different eras, no matter what. Michael was Michael. Magic was Magic. Kobe is Kobe.

We should appreciate each of them for their greatness and thank them for sharing their gifts with us fans. End of story.
Posted by: Rick Friedman | August 03, 2010 at 02:57 PM

Although I love comparing things from different eras whether its players, music, movies, etc. But I agree each player is unique and I appreciate their talent and being blessed to watch them perform.

Kobe Bryant right now without winning another title or scoring another point is the Greatest player of all time.!! Period! Case closed!!! Tell him Justa!

Get off the fence already!

Jordan's Hall Of Fame acceptance speech was absolutely painful to watch. It made me cringe. It was LeBronesque.
Posted by: Jon K. | August 03, 2010 at 03:33 PM

He sounded like a spoiled brat. And his selfishness and vindictiveness was really highlighted after following David Robinson's speech given with dignity and humility.

Ok so - Lakers and Meat at xmas?

Ho hum.

Talk to me if they make it out of the East. THEN I'll cancel some plans.

forgive him, he didn't take his meds before posting.

Re: MJ's HOF acceptance speech -

The worst part, to me, was the egomaniacal spewing he did regarding how he felt sorry for his kids because they had so much to live up to.

From that point on, I've hated him with a true, strong, passionate hate. That proved to me his narcissism was so deep and true that there was no way he had any class, character or moral fiber. I don't give a crap how good he played basketball. He's a waste of space.

Maybe Kobe is a better outside shooter.
I just consider myself lucky to watch Kobe game after game, year after year on my favorite team. That's enough for me.

Posted by: puddle | August 03, 2010 at 03:59 PM

Puddle - You can drop the maybe. Remember when he hit 12 3pts in that game against Seattle? I think he hit like 8 or 9 in a row. Kobe is so amazing and his range is ridiculous.

But I do agree I feel blessed to be able to watch Kobe's skill and will. MJ was incredible also but he wasn't "mine" so I didn't feel quite the same.

I was away at the dentist (ugh!) and didn't get to post earlier.

Oh my freakin gawd! Shaq to the Celtics is soooooo good. And to think I was looking forward to Kobe kicking LeBronze's ass in the finals. This will be so much better! I hope all the green geezers stay healthy so there'll be no excuse when we three-peat on their butts this year.

REPOST:

f Kobe Bryant wins 2 more championships before he retires, that'll give the Lakers a team total of 18 and he will personally have 7. As a result, Kobe will have surpassed Jordan with one more ring and the Lakers as a team will have surpassed the Celts with 18 titles (barring any more titles for Boston between now and then).

In my opinion if Kobe pulls that off, he will undoubtedly go down as the GOAT, whether he is 1A & Jordan is 1B or vice-versa; doesn't matter.

A guy leading his team to the most titles in the sport's history while at the same time surpassing the current GOAT in titles in the league's history is a BIG argument I would use to prove Kobe is arguably the G.O.A.T. !!

Because when you throw all the stats and all the accolades away, the only thing that remains is winning. Kobe will go down a bigger winner and TEAM player than Jordan because he will be part of 7 championships (the most by any Laker) for the all-time winningest TEAM.

KOBE WINS 2 MORE RINGS BEFORE HE RETIRES & BOSTON WINS NONE = KOBE IS G.O.A.T.

What do my fellow Lakers fans think ??

@JUSTANOTHERMAMBAFAN, I want you to go rent a movie called Love & Basketball OK. Please? Heres a lil cliphttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DkvD2Hs2tQ&feature=related

A very good movie. A classic quote...Girl, I didn't know Nike made dresses.

Kobe was able to rise from his own ashes, let's see if LeBron can do the same.

You had a dynasty. A 3 peat will happen in 3 years by the Miami heat. Move over to get out the way paper champions.

Signing Shaq makes sense for Boston. They need someone who can fill in while Perkins recovers from his injury. Shaq should do an adequate job of filling in for Perkins and providing some insurance if for some reason Perkins is out for the season.

When Perkins does come back, Shaq could fill the role that Sheed played last year as the backup C, although I think they're gonna miss Sheed come playoff time. In any case, this just makes the Boston-Miami showdown even more interesting. I think Boston has a fighting chance, assuming their Old 3 can keep it together for one more year.

NBA4ever,

Suspension? Yeah okay..
If there ever was a jordan conspiracy STERN would be right in the middle of it.. think about it.. or don't.

Boston is old and slow. Adding Shaq makes them older and slower.

Uh, buddy, by "paper champions," do you mean a team that's only been crowned champions on paper? If you do, you will find no better definition of that term than the Miami Heat. And if you want to see what a real championship ring looks like, tune in on 10/26 at 7:30. That's the closest you'll get to seeing one in a long time.

Paper burns easy when you apply heat to it.We gonna burn y'all future dynasty dreams to the ground. Somebody on this blog said Kobe will be the best even if he doesn't win another titlt. We will see because he will not win another title unless he plays for Miami.

By scheduling the Lakers vs the Heat at Staples Center on Christmas Day, Commissioner David Stern has insulted two of the NBA's greatest franchises.

Stern has insulted the Celtics, who challenged the Lakers for the NBA Championship down to the final minutes of Game7. Like the Lakers, the Celtics are one of the NBA's greatest franchises of all time; they're also a team the Lakers consider rivals for all the right reasons.

Stern has insulted the Lakers, who have no history with the Heat, a team assembled only through the collusion of James, Wade, and Bosh, and encouraged during an illicit meeting between James and sleazemaster Pat Riley.

Stern continues to operate under the illusion that Kobe and LeBron should be rivals, just as he did last year by scheduling the Christmas Day game between the Lakers and Cavaliers, another matchup without history or tradition. Stern's uncomfortable man love for the King of No Rings distorts his sense of reality and perverts his fitness to rule the NBA.

Darth Stern may have given a Christmas present to himself, but for true fans of professional basketball this is like waking up and finding coal in the stocking.

16 chips - 1 is a dynasty d**khead, but no surprise, what w/ all these d**ks jumping on America's d**k.

Heat fans = premature ejaculation. too excited right now, please be patient, as one day, maybe you too will be at the Lakers Kama Sutra level. until then, guess you'll just have to keep playing w/ yourselves.

Kobe fans, let's pitch in & get this for him as a retirement gift(like Kareem):

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0804-bugatti-20100804,0,195266.story

although, we probably should have started collecting before Kobe was even born.

Cancel our Christmas plans? Watching the game is the Christmas plan!

Might as well call it the Lakers Annual Holiday Invitational.

Get out the past. Stern knows what we know......Miami is gonna kick some serious azz in the future including L A. I know fear can over whelm you and make you say some dumb sh#t. Hate on LBJ,Bosh or South Beach all you want but know this..............We gonna kick y'all and the rest of the league to sleep.

edwin,

i'm just sayin.. stern releases the holiday or marquee game schedules but he conveniently leaves out one of the biggest and most anticipated games of the year HEAT@CAVS.. not a single word... hmmmm.

Sigh. Sounds like another bandwagon fan. Were you one of the several hundreds of people who attended Heat playoff games last year?

MiaWillSlayLA, did you read this?
"If you are under 13 years of age you may read this message board, but you may not participate."

Did you do your homework?

A couple of unclear points:

1. What new nickname will the green Michelin give himself this season?

2. What number will he be wearing since Paula already takes 34 and 1741 is not allowed by the NBA?

3. When will he official announced that Paula is the best player he ever play with, Doc the best coach, and C's the best organization he ever play for?

Definitely looking forward to this Xmas day matchup...should be loads of fun. Of course, I may have to try Justa's Vodka and percocet cocktail afterward to calm me down...unless, of course, it has the opposite effect.

Let me know Justa.(LOL)

BTW Justa, did you see my post in one of the previous threads regarding your question about the film ' The Spanish Prisoner '?

Let's go Ls...all the way to a 3-peat!!!!!

Not shocking to see Shaq as a lepper, the dude has ZERO integrity. He has the integrity of an underaged skank parading herself on some lame MTV reality mel0-drama.

Sincerely,
Laker Fans

I for one, am not shocked at the news of him being the Big Lepper, he has ZERO integrity. He has the integrity of an underaged skank parading herself on an MTV reality-melodrama

Sincerely,

Laker Nation

Disregard the double post, as I did not know if the post had been sent when I accidentally hit the "back" button on my mouse.

@mn

I think the Big Traitorous Lepper will "2. What number will he be wearing since Paula already takes 34 and 1741 is not allowed by the NBA?" - wear number 43 since he plays like he's 43 (conspiracy theory -backwards it's 34) or possibly 41 since that's the year of that infamous B. Arnold incident.

Ain't nothing worse in this world than a Bandwagon Meat fan trying to start ish on the 16 Time Back to Back World Champion Los Angeles Lakers blog. I thought they faded away after getting swept in the first round after winning it in 06. Did they finally grow some cojones after all these years? Next they are going to tell us that their not a bunch of Frontrunners and have been following their team since forever. Come back to us when your paper championship team actually wins something...in fact, get out of the east first and then maybe, just maybe, you'll have enough clout to properly post on this blog. That's all I have to say about that, now begone troll.

Shaq getting a jersey hung up in Staples Center-

Hell's to the no! Are you crazy! This just goes to show you the weird dynamic of Laker fans that still like Shaq and still don't appreciate Kobe. Look, just off of playing with the Celtics alone he gets nixed. Plus the company time comment, the Buss disrespect, the Kobe rap, ... remember when he was playing like 1/2 the season due toe injuries and he had the audacity to miss one practice because he said he had a flat tire. You want to put this guy up next to Magic? Next to Kareem and Jerry freakin West? Uggh, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth just thinking about his jersey next to those guys. NO NO NO.

Kobe vs. MJ.

Let's cut the crap. If Kobe gets 6 rings its like comparing which sport is better, basketball or football? It's an opinion and nothing more. Kobe doesn't have the stats MJ has over the life of his career for one reason and one reason only. He didn't have to avg. 35 a game to win because he played with guys like Shaq and Pau Gasol. Bulls fans will say well then Kobe should have won more. But who did Kobe have to compete against? Duncan the best power forward of all time and currently a lineup of Melo, KD, Lebron, Dwade, Dwight Howard, and the Celtics big 4. Nuff said. We all know that if he wanted to score 30-35 a game he could (see 81 point game). People hold MJ in this can't be touch mode but the truth is once Kobe gets 6 rings guess what... next he's working on 7! And then I can guarantee you that you will have more and more people say this guy is the greatest player of all time. Get used to it. This is a real concept that is about to come true. Laker fans know it and soon everybody else will have to accept it. And with the lockout short season coming, this can only help Kobe's finger (and his legs) in that quest for 7 rings.

The Heat.

I guarantee you that this is not going to work. It has never worked before and it won't work now. Lebron has the biggest ego in the world hands down. And Bosh scares me altogether (and I'm not talking about his playing ability) with his hour special coming on his "decision." Dude, nobody cares about you! Both of these guys owners say they quit on them. Plenty of great players have left their teams in free agency and their owners never said a bad word about them EVER. Heck, even when Shaq left Orlando (which was a colossal deal at the time) you didn't hear coward, quitter comments. Heat fans say sour grapes but maybe its just the TRUTH. I mean is that such a stretch? Now you expect a team of these guys to win after they've already had a parade in the preseason? Remember when Shaq and Kobe used to do the kids birthday party thing. How did that work out? There really is only 1 question that I have concerning the "the big 3's" relationship. How long (or short) will it last? Lebron says 7 rings. Hah you wish it was that easy! Every little comment, non verbal cue, tweet is going to get analyzed, twisted, blown out of proportion, for the better or for the worse. I hope they got a better PR crew in Miami going forward than they did this summer. They are going Ghandi to hold this thing together. But what do I know, I'm just a hater right?

I been a heat fan since the Rorry Sparrow and Rony seikley days. I was a L A fan until Miami get there own team. Still got a soft spot for the L A greats minus Shaq. I regonize that L A gonna be hard to beat with Kobe and all them trees. Phil is a ex factor that Miami don't have with Spro. With all that said,we still gonna beat the hell out of L A and the rest of the league. I've heard that they can't build a team around the 3 kings. I've heard that they will have chemistry issues. I've heard that we got a team full of quiters. What I'm really hearing is......Dam y'all was able to build a power house like that in MIA. Dam how can we beat that. Jeti mind games will not stop this train from. Rolloing.

The big factor is when Wade is taking his man off the dribble, you leave Lebron open and let him brick the shot. That's hardly a winning strategy talk to the owner of Nvidia, you don't let AMD take over the market you once owned by going high end, you build from the ground up, not top to bottom. What I am saying is you eliminate Lebron's game altogether or Wade will stop being the big slasher he was, something's gotta give. The Lakers build a perfect scheme that they've added and tweaked over the years, this is a 6 year project since 2004 when Shaq left, all the pieces have been put in place and they are not to be denied in Phil's Last Stand. -

The red tide from Miami has finally hit shore...I knew it would sooner or later...

Same dog, different fleas...

We heard it all before...

MiaWillSlayLA -- You may be the most pathetic troll ever to visit this blog. The Boston trolls are educated and intelligent. Sonny, the King's troll, has cleverness and bite. Butler, the Suns' troll, knows his limitations. You, on the other hand, are just lame. Come back when you grow up.

I'm thinking of changing my name to Giant Green Bald Headed Leprechaun, in honor of our new player, who we don't have yet.

If it's any consolation to you, I am very happy to read all the anti-Heat rants on here. Also happy to see many more not-so-terrible-Celtics sentiments. Last year, it was a four game sweep, and you won't get past Cleveland.....blah blah blah.............we put an end to that.

And, if it's any further consolation, NO ONE who is a Celtics fan thinks we are getting Shaq. Shaq was last seen in 2006 in MIA. We are getting the Artist Formerly Known as Shaq, a shell of his former self, who will play about 15-20 mins per game. That is all we need of him. And, as I always say, healthy and playing well come playoff time, and we are very good.

From an outside perspective - you should hang his jersey when he retires. It is not "hate" on the lakers, he has chosen teams he thinks can win, that's all. He hasn't played on your team since 2002, right? That's a long time ago. If Fisher went to MIA would you feel the same way?

You all need to chill, he hasn't signed yet!!

I don't see it that way. When wade or LBj drives they gonna draw doubles and triple as always. Doesn't matter cause you still probably gonna get dunked on. It might be by a guy that got 3 guys on him or it might be by a guy who is wide open. How you gonna stop that. All trees do is make tree climbers good at there job.

That's what I said, lol. Having difficulty adjusting to a knowledgeable Laker-NBA IQ fanbase? Lol. It works against you because unlike back in the Cavs days when Lebron drove he kicked it back out to one of the most prolific 3pt shooting guard supporters in the NBA. Wade is so-so from 3pt, and that rook' Mario Chalmers or whatever is going to get smoked defensively, that kid is a work in progress. It does not matter, either way Rajon Rondo with another year under his belt, another year in the top 3 for most steals in the league, I think he will fair very very good against the Heat when he carpetbags that rook' Mario.

Take more meds bro. Oh, and don't count your eggs before they hatch yet, don't sleep on the Bulls, Magic those guys are still solid and those teams could make any series interesting. Remember good coaches know how to work around matchups, and I don't see how the Celtics wouldn't be up there even with another year and still banged up as ever, those guys have game.

Question: If Lebron snapped his fingers would you roll over, hump his leg, and wag your tail?

Answer: Yes, you are a bandwagon.

Case closed.

I don't see it that way. When wade or LBj drives they gonna draw doubles and triple as always. Doesn't matter cause you still probably gonna get dunked on. It might be by a guy that got 3 guys on him or it might be by a guy who is wide open. How you gonna stop that. All trees do is make tree climbers good at there job.

you know the type, loud as a motor bike, but couldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight.

yellofever:

I don’t know if he really wanted to just play baseball or not. I do wonder why a grudge holding egomaniac and revengeful person that was so driven to stick it to everyone would just quit in his prime. There can be a number of reasons, including him just wanting to get away and follow his dream to play baseball. I just find that story hard to believe, think about it or don’t. As far as STERN, your right the genius would be right in the middle of it.. think about that.. or don’t.

i've been a tad busy and haven't been on the blog in a couple of days. i missed out on commenting on the kobe vs. mj blog, one that i would've loved to comment on, so i will do so here, if y'all bear with me.

i've read and heard many arguments, and that guy that wrote that blog was just horrible. (on that other website)

PART I

i think to declare a GOAT, one must weigh number of championships, but they can not be the final decisive statistic or else it would be hands down Bill Russell. (i don't give credence to the argument that states: if Jordan had not taken off two years to play baseball, he would have won 8 championships. the fact of the matter is that he did take-off, only won 6 rings, and that's that. no one can predict what would've happened.)

so, you have to look at the individual statistics. true, Jordan had better numbers, scored more points, higher ppg, and has numerous defensive accolades. (but individual scoring can't be the end-all, as Kareem and Wilt hold higher stats than mj) so it must be a combination of the two, while being a team leader and being reliable when the game or series is on the line.

i agree that kobe would (in most critics' eyes) have to win two more championships, just to surpass jordan. that's a given.

Are these guys the Miami trolls warm up acts, the Washington Generals, the JV posters...surely they've got better than this?

PART II:

kobe would also have to pass mj in total points scored (i believe). getting two more all-defensive teams would also pass mj, i think. 1 more Olympic gold medal wouldn't hurt. and another (regular season) mvp. (which might be possible now that lbj w/ his side-kicks) and maybe, just to put icing on the cake, lead the league in assists one year. (at the end of his career)

i think it's possible for kobe to accomplish all of these things. because of the 5 rings, his continue rising in the ranks of scoring, his number of clutch shots, and his numerous crazy scoring bursts have already legitimately put him in the conversation.

people that believe that the NBA was tougher in mj's day were merely speaking subjectively. i've heard many arguments (i believe from Bill Simmons, too) that the league is more difficult in this day and age. particularly from an athletic view point. jordan didn't have to go up against that many awesome shooting guards. he was far and above all else. kobe had to guard the likes of: tracy mcgrady, d-wade, vince carter, allen iverson, (and at times) lebron james. (my opinion is that mj had it easy defensively, not to mention having pippen there to guard the best 1-3) i think we're also in an unprecedented age in which so many teams in one conference are so competitive that you have winning teams not making the playoffs.

sure mj had some epic battles against the knicks and some other teams, but let's not belittle the epic battles kobe has faced against the spurs, the suns, the kings, and the celtics. heck, i may be so bold to say that the spurs and the celtics were/are better teams than any that the bulls had to face. and call me crazy, but posting a record high 72 wins not only speaks of the bulls superiority, but also the rest of the league's inferiority (except for the jazz).

(imagine for a moment: the teams of Kobe & Shaq or Kobe & Pau going up against the 90s knicks or sonics or jazz or heat or blazers. are you kidding me? kobe & c. would eat them up alive!!!! sure it was a more physical time, but that just means the lakers would get more physical. shaq would slap oakley so hard that his grandmam would feel it. ron-ron would put larry johnson in a chokehold, d-fish would body-slam starks, and kobe, aka the black mamba...let's not even go there, it gives me the chills.)

The Dodgers broke the 6 game skid.. Gratz guys.. grazie for this Win!.. Good job Theo Lilly!

Are they gonna be good at "there" job? Climb some trees? This troll is classic, especially because he's seen his beloved new "superteam" play exactly ZERO times.

I think I might love Justa. Just sayin'.

Go Lake Show!

jayden, you have a very good point about kobe's stats vs. mj's stats. kobe definitely didn't have the luxury to stuff his stats the way mj did. not to mention intelligent critics have stated, kobe entering the L as an 18 year old, still wet behind the ears, greener than a piece of celery was nothing like when mj entered the L out of n. carolina. heck, kobe didn't even start during his rookie year, no wonder his stats are so behind mj's!

big props to rick f. for calling out the troll, lol! love it!

Never has any country, government, organization, or kingdom, been ruled by three kings. There will be one King, one queen, and a concubine. Go cHeat!

@MiaWIllSlayLA:

Boy, I hear your mama calling you to bed. Try not to wet the bedsheets again.

Giant Big Bald L,

What makes Wallace so disgruntled that he opted to retire, is it because of Doc or against Danny A? With JO in your lineup, Wallace is a better player than the Big L who could not improve his Ft %. You have now two players in the same category, Rondo and Shaq. You know there is nothing wrong for big ego to play with the greenies, it's just funny that he's doing it in desperation to prove that the party is not yet over. A year from now, he will hate the Celtics for not utilizing his remaining talents in the closing minutes. How about a new name, Big Shackrock?instead o f Shamrock. It is shack that sounds Radio Shack, where you find electronic remnants of the original part.

Posted by: Rick Friedman | August 03, 2010 at 09:39 PM

Speaking of Boston trolls, what happened to Red's Love Child? I actually found the guy to be pretty funny. And he didn't take himself or the games too seriously, unlike that 131-92 clown.

As for the Kings' troll, Sonny seems to be more bitter than biting these days. I guess that's what perennial losing does to one's psyche over time.

jaden24,

Sorry but if Wilt can sleep with 20,000 women and get away with it or Magic contract HIV and still get his number retired Shaq will get his number retired. Boo him all you want I don't blame you and the way the Big Fat Boy has disrespected the Boy Wonder Dwyane Wade, slowed down PHX's successful offense, and being a nightmare in the locker room in Cleveland he certainly deserved to be disliked especially the way he left LA.

That being said his jersey will be retired in LA. Mitch/Buss already stated in the pass it will be and no Laker has far adopted #34. I don't like atm anymore than you do but he gave this franchise 3 titles.

leonardblast....saying the past era's was weaker is a blatent disrespect of Showtime Lakers? Have you forgotten this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7r6vXeOfyQ

And only a foul, no ejection, no fines, no suspensions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu8Da3pe9h0

Then the Bad Boys Pistons who make Garnett's Celtics look like wannabe bullies:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu8Da3pe9h0

Hand checking to perimeter players. No defensive 3 seconds being blown. Defenses had a huge advantage then. Teams that played team defense were powerful. The Celtics had 3 unathletic players (Bird/McHale/Bill Walton) yet in 1986 they were #1 ranked defense.

Even Kobe sneers at the defense rules today not because they are tougher but he can't defend compared during 1999-2000 when he was basically shutting down almost everyone that he was assigned to guard.

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/news/story?id=4871616

"I'm old-school," Bryant said after scoring 22 of his 24 points in the second half of the Lakers' 99-91 win at Philadelphia on Friday.

"I'd like for us to go back to the old rules," Bryant said. "Get rid of the 'crutch defense,' known as the zone defense, and have guys guard man-to-man and stuff like that [and allow] hand checking and all that. I think that's better basketball."

The league started to allow zone defense at the beginning of the 2001-02 season. Before then, if a player attempted to guard a space on the floor rather than another player, the team would be whistled for illegal defense. The offending team would receive a warning from the officials for the first instance of illegal defense and would be charged with a technical foul for each subsequent violation.

Hand checking first became outlawed at the start of the 1994-95 season and shortly thereafter, in 1997-98, defenders became prohibited from using their forearms to guard against players facing the basket. In 1999-2000, the league eliminated all contact by a defender with his hands and forearms both in the backcourt and frontcourt, except on offensive players who caught the ball below the free-throw line extended."

Leonard please don't disrespect the legends just to make Kobe seem better. It's disrespecting Kobe himself to put that previous eras were weak to today's era.

Mitch Richmond would drop 30ppg in today's era.

Heat fans pick apart first the Chicago Bulls, the up and coming Bucks, the still sturdy Celtics who probably will even have more of a size advantage over your big men, not to mention your neighbors up North who still wears the Superman logo on their chest.

When you face in the finals we'll be ready to dismantle your overrated though very talented team. Until then focus on just getting there. It would be a huge blow if your team didn't even make the finals.

LRob,

"So my question is what does this thing will not end well mean? Can you be more specific."

An absolutely fair question.

Not to cowardly shirk away from your question, but I'm not really certain. A big chunk of my statement was a gut response to knowing the limitations of human beings and how they respond to stress under extreme environments.

My best guess is that on court and media stresses will cause him to seek outside hedonistic distractions to relieve the pressures that he's thrust upon himself by narcissistically embracing the role of the "King" before an annointed time; however, unlike Cleveland, these excesses will be under a media scrutiny which will further tarnish his image, leading to additional stresses which his team of hoodrats will be too immature to manage... which will ultimately lead to compromises in his game... which will be celebrated with derision by Meat-Haters everywhere... which will lead to further stress, which LeBron will not have the spiritual maturity to handle... leading to a downwards recursive loop that... ends badly.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

MiaWillSlayLA,

Have you seen the film "Idiocracy?"

You should. You really should.

GO LAKERS!!!

Jon K,

I got a nice chuckle out of your answer. Good stuff. Just don't you go paying off Chalmers or Eddie House to reprise Delonte's role and help expedite Lebron's demise.

It's getting late in our time zone so I gotta sign off. Have a good night/morning.

Oh, this is great news. We play Miami on Christmas and Shaq joins the Celtics. I have a bad feeling the Heat are going to take this opportunity to get in our heads by blowing us out. LeBron is going to go apes..t on Artest to mess with him, Wade is going to attack Drew (if he's not injured by then) every chance he gets, and Bosh will muscle Gasol challenge him for "best big man in the league", though that title rightly belongs to Dwight Howard at the moment, if not Yao Ming when he's healthy (Yao has dominated Howard in EVERY single one of their meetings). Let's just hope Kobe can win the 3-point shoot-out with Miller, if House doesn't tire him out early.

Man, NBA is going to be must-see TV for the seasons first week!

Buckus I have to disagree strongly. I don't see how Shaq joining the C*****cs correlates to the Heat pushing the Lakers around. It's also too early to get a feeling about anything since they have yet to play a single game. That's like saying that the Lakers have not been watching this Heat saga unfold and won't have a chip on their shoulder about it, you don't know who these guys are. I think Odom will school Haslem and Wade will get a nice 26 pts on his statline. Ugh, you are delusional man.. OMG OMG OMG OMG!! THE CELTICS ARE THE BEST TEAM (distinct sensation of human waste rolling down the leg). Settle down bro.

Hand-checking on the perimeter has been banned? That's funny. Pretty much every player who guards Kobe has their hands on him. Just watch how Ray Allen plays Kobe. Or how Bruce Bowen played him. The list goes on and on. I guess it can be considered the Kobe Rules.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Seems Kobe agrees since he can hardly put a hand on another offensively player. He has to use his feet more in order to help deny penetration.

And it's not just Kobe it's also Derek Fisher

http://lakersblog.latimes.com/lakersblog/2009/04/derek-fisher-on-defense-in-todays-nba.html

" I know there are guys that are capable of being lock down defenders, but the way the game is being called now, with the focus on freedom of movement, it's almost impossible."

-Derek Fisher on the defense in the NBA that was posted by BK back on April 11, 2009.

There are signicant evidence that the defenses in this era compares to yester years. I have yet to find ONE player who has played both in this era and the era where hand checking was allowed to say this era is much tougher than before.

Hand checking is more than simply touching the opponent. It's a mean to help defend yourselves against a burst of speed by the ball handler. Without hand checking it's almost hard to defend perimeter players without being quick lateral wise. One reason why Fisher gets burned so consistently.

Bowen has played dirty at times but he uses his hands to distract players and try to throw off their focus and possibly distract them to possibly get a steal (he was no avid stealer). That's why Phil called him Edward Scissorhands because of the way Bowen kept flapping his arms.

@PointForward

When has Odom ever schooled anybody? Don't get your hopes up. By your "handle", I can see Odom, NOT Kobe, is your favorite player, but please. Haslem isn't there to score, he's there to play defense, and he's good at that. Lamar isn't known to show up offensively in big games, so Haslem isn't going to have a problem at all.

The player I'm most worried about is Artest. His performance plays purely on his confidence. Get it going and he'll deliver strong, like how he did AFTER the put-back against the Suns. Mess him up just a LITTLE and his game will collapse like a house of cards.

LeBron knows this. And LeBron is unstoppable when not double-teamed. Which the Lakers would be foolish to do since the Heat also has Wade and Bosh in the middle. Double team EITHER James or Wade and the other guys will kill us.

So if Artest is playing LeBron one-on-one, he's going to get SMOKED. As in 50+ points smoked. And then he's going to be MIA the rest of the season and definitely in the Finals when we meet either the Heat or the Celtics, if we even get that far.

What a nice way to support your team.

Ok I'm back. I see y'all miss me. I hear a lot of fear on this blog. Azz whoopings will scare the hell out of you.WTF is up with calling somebody a troll. What is this lords of the rings. Oh I see you think y'all 16 rings gonna make y'all lord of future rings. Not gonna happen until the 3 kings retire. In the mean time maybe y'all better finds some better words to use when trying to insult someone. Let me give you a example. Ron Artest is the dumbest MF in the league. Don't turn your back on Kobe unless you like azzhole pain. We can continue to be ignorant with personal attacks on players or each other but I rather talk basketball. Miller was 2nd in the league last year behind the arc. James Jones is a deadly 3 point shooter. Haslem,Ilgauskus,House,Arroyo and yes Chalmers can all hit open mid ranges. Point guard his a concern when we playing Boston or Orlando but not LA. A healthy Bynum is a concern but I'm still waiting to see it happen. This team was built not to just beat y'all but to break y'all. Starting christmas day,we gonna break our foot in some Laker's butt. Unlike Kobe we are civilized in the MIA.

?Debbydowner here. But to get your panties in a bunch prematurely is a bit of a stretch don't you think? Are we not overlooking the fact that downlow they don't match well with us? And besides I think you got it the other way around, you said Wade would harass Andrew, how which way? How can you guarantee this? I know the guy is good even for his height and weight he is a good slasher, but I don't see how that's likely. Are you not overlooking the fact that the dynamic of that team has changed? Lebron is NOW the best slasher in the heat, not Wade. Bosh is not in the discussion, because frankly Gasol could have a field-day with this cat.

Wade and Kobe is awash, Lebronsky going man to man against Artest is also awash, most of the shortcomings he had were his lack of playtime in the system. My handle, thanks, let me explain my handle, it's a play on words meaning "straight and to the point" and I mixed in some basketball analogy to it. I don't BS around with my name, and the Miami trolls around here know this.

"So if Artest is playing LeBron one-on-one, he's going to get SMOKED. As in 50+ points smoked. And then he's going to be MIA the rest of the season and definitely in the Finals when we meet either the Heat or the Celtics, if we even get that far."

Wow you are very downer. I don't understand your assessment of Artest, how will Lebron smoke him 1-1 when we have the low block covered and Wade isn't a good player from outside. Make sense or die. And the point about "either Heat or the Celtics, if we even get that far."

Hey if you want to go to Heat forums and the like be my guest because you sound very very optimistic about our coming season, I doubt you have watched the decimation Andrew has done to the league at the beginning of every season to settle the home-court-advantage for the Lakers. The West is a joke. The threat of the Suns is officially gone, the Spurs have run out of breath, the Porkland Blazers I'm sure are going to have another promising season, only to come up short, and I could go on and on and on and on about this list..

You seem to forget that teams successes are not predicated on man-to-man offense, but rather D-E-F-E-N-S-E, and good team defense at that. For the record I don't think the Celtics while good, are not the best team in the East, barring injuries the Magic and Bulls have as good as shot as making to the Finals next season.

Keep being an optimist man, it will help you with your heart problems.

In Miami the world revolves around D. You sound like you should know that. We got 2 guys on the all defensive team and Haslem ain't no joke either. Y'all got a advantage

@MiaWillSlayLA

"Unlike Kobe we are civilized in the MIA. "

You should have mentioned you are the Jedi Warrior for the Miami Heat beforehand, glad you cleared that up for us princess.

You seem to get back to baseless garble lmao. Dude you are like the Cadillac of trolls. Like the chinaware of the Heat wagonners, the one misprinted logoed jack-@ss plate that I'm about to step on and break without any weight because it's so fickle . Yes you are one, how I know this? Miami Heat has the great attendance rating for their lone superstar of 17,730, 1 grand more than the Clipper fanbase, and the trend continues with the other best Florida team the Marlins, GREAT fanbase, very very loyal and committed. Especially since I see those Heat jersey wearing Marlins fans between Marlins highlights.

Wow soldier, the bandwagon leader thinks he's tough because eventhough he CAME to OUR forums because he's so TOUGH, it took him a couple-o hours to come with a lame, bo-a-ring response, that contained ZERO facts to support his whitewash. Tough act to follow. We have not been talking about Bball? The first response I gave you was a damn Fing bball, system related response, the first thing you uttered was a slant elementary-style imbecilic, hateful, attempt at an insult at Laker fans.

Until YOU talk basketball, about how Chalmers will smoke Derek Fisher, how Chalmers will move their system, how that nobody will help Lebron get his around the "trees" you have a point that backs what you said. Don't wet the blanket, I will continue to give you sports related material so you could return with those 2 hour late replies.

See kid, or vitamin deficient old man, EVERYTHING you have said REEKS of an opinionated "homer" looking to get attention in enemy territory. Here is my question for you since you seem to know a lot about ball, and you are such a loyal Heat follower. I think even more telling about how YOU not me, is "FEAR"ful about the Lakers especially since you telegraphed it with little story about how you used to be a Laker fan BEFORE you became a Heat fan just so you could gain "sympathy" and less of a backlash from Lakerfans in the Lakerblog [that's what it's called since you googled it, I surmise] since you telegraphed it from a mile mile away.

I am sure you must endure the pain of listening to Laker fans gloat a factually, realistic view about the Lakers being on the verge of a three-peat, while you have to wait, and self-gloss your newly shining, bristling golden-calf Lebron, who calls himself the King (with NO ring) sack, and because of that you don't need to GIVE REASONS for your opinions, that simply proclaiming unproven, failed, miscoached (Spoelstra), overhyped talent (see Bronze medal achievements versus also, unproven, UN-hyped foreign talent during the past Olympics {see: Kobe bailing America's collective b-ball @ss against the Spaniards in 08}.

Let me save you the trouble: Stop counting your eggs of those wingless birds, before they are hatched, and also stop trying to be the counselor of "un-biased" opinion. Basically what I am saying is stop picking the wrong verbal fights and don't bring imbecilic takes to a man's game, where you are liable to get your --SS handed to you in a Larry O'Brien serrated golden platter.

No the Miami world revolves around selling out season tickets (in a resort town) before there was none just so they could say they are LOYAL, only to fire the very 30 people who got you those season tickets during the "bad times", yeah those AWESOME 15-67 win teams. Very successful, the times when MIA fans were M.I.A. and none of you pathetic losers sought attention from Laker fans. The times when you were a nonfactor as a fan, and you wouldn't have been trolling around, spewing vitriol, and illogical arguments. It revolves around having a successful franchise every decade or so, only to sound as mentally handicapped as the next disinterested NBA city.

How spoiled am I as a fan to have these "Ghollums" trying to tread on the great Phil Jackson's rings. How did you enjoy that Lord of the Rings reference bud? You must enjoy the attention you are getting since I've categorically SMOKED your CANDY @$$. It will be even sweeter when Kobe & Co. steamroll your "boys". Good Game All.

@PointForward

I'm not sure how much basketball you watch, but Wade is DEFINITELY the slasher on the Heat. LeBron will play more of a facilitator role, while Wade has ALWAYS been the one that drives to the basket and gets the opposing team in trouble.

Do you really think that Bynum with two major knee surgeries is going to have the lateral movement to guard Wade steamrolling toward him toward the basket? The most he can do is foul and hopefully knock Wade on his behind, but he will NOT be able to stop Wade WITHOUT fouling. And given he only has 6 fouls to give, you could see Phil benching Drew in the 1st quarter after he's picked up his 3rd foul, if not his 2nd.

Without Drew protecting him, Pau is FAR LESS effective in the middle, in offense AND defense, so there goes our advantage with Bosh. Our team is GREAT when we have BOTH Pau and Drew clogging up the middle. That's our advantage in this league, SIZE. But if our big guys are picking up fouls left and right when Wade drives to the basket, that exposes a big hole in our game.

Bosh was a 24 point 11 rebound guy this year, though you can expect his points to go down next year, but his rebounds will GO UP. When he's not the main option on offense, he will be able to focus more on rebounds, particularly OFFENSIVE rebounds which spells trouble for us. You have Wade, James, Miller, House, Z and even Haslem jacking up shots with the Laker defense spread open like a bald eagle and Bosh will CLEAN UP in the middle.

As for Artest, LeBron AVERAGED 32 points against him last season, and that was WITHOUT Wade and Bosh on his team. Artest? 10 points a game against LeBron. So how is this by ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION a "wash"? Only someone in SERIOUS DENIAL would think Artest vs. LeBron is a "wash".

I've had enough of these arrogant punks. The whole league shall declare WAR on the Miami Heat.

Wade said the Heat welcomes the challenge and the bull's-eye, at home and on the road this season.

``I understand people are going to say stuff. And we accept it with open arms,'' Wade said. ``And even on the road, because every place is going to sell out when we come to town. So [opposing teams] can thank us now.''

p@@$% & punk in the same sentence? You must be talking about your new favorite player LeBron.

Rick Friedman,

you wrote: Stern has insulted the Celtics, who challenged the Lakers for the NBA Championship down to the final minutes of Game7.

Darth Stern may have given a Christmas present to himself, but for true fans of professional basketball this is like waking up and finding coal in the stocking.

my response:

1st. Hola.

2nd. I think you're looking at this the wrong way. Think Achilles in the
movie Troy.

Kobe left standing on the court ... "Is there no one else? IS THERE NO ONE
ELSE???

Do we really care about the Celtics being dis-respected? C'mon! They were
born for that.

Do you really mind a Christmas treat with Lakers vs. Heat? A bit of pay back
for last year. Bynum gets to vindicate the Lakers for not trading for Bosh.

I admit that what Stern has done with LBJ is ... distasteful. He certainly
couldn't manage my 'dirty draws", but that's a different subject. Everyone
said that D-Wade was better than Kobe. When is the last time D-Wade won?
Everybody said that LBJ was better than Kobe? Who just ran away from home,
because he couldn't win?

The NBA will continue to throw up straw targets. That's what the "evil
emperor" does. Kobe keeps cutting the staw targets. That's what Kobe does.
PJ sits there with a smile on his face. That's what Phil does. The Lakers
keep winning. That's what they do.

In the end, it's all about Kobe. It's always been about Kobe. The rest is just
bull$*&t.

There can be only ONE. [ cue dramatic musing. :) ]

I think the Xmas day game should be a double header, like in baseball, sorta.

Miami vs Lakers at noon followed by Celtics vs Lakers at 7 pm.

Buckus,

You are pretty pathetic there. I hope you don't apply this doom and gloom basketball perspective to your life in general, or you'll never leave your house. I'm sure there's a million things to be afraid of in the world if you really want to be afraid of something, I'm just glad most people have enough common sense to not make Shaq joining the Celtics or LeBron being single-teamed one of them. This scene from the Godfather is for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2jAwiq6YsE
