Lakers fans expressed hope for Steve Blake during season finale against Clippers

44348710-1

Steve Blake picked a good game to drop his first career triple double. As the Lakers plodded through their regular-season finale, the Clippers ended a disappointing season with a double-digit victory over the Lakers. As everyone on the Lakers appeared more consumed with resting up and remaining healthy for the playoffs (sorry Sasha Vujacic), Blake put on a show that surely helped cement this off-season a four-year, $16-million deal with the Lakers.

The Lakers will introduce Blake Wednesday in a news conference where he'll offer answers to what he should provide as a backup guard for the defending champs. But readers of the Lakers blog had already imagined this scenario panning out as Blake finished with 23 points on eight-for-12 shooting, 11 assists and 10 rebounds against the Lakers. Below are a collection of comments readers made in the Live Chat during the Lakers' season finale against the Clippers:

7:54 - Caliphilosopher: I know it's early for speculation, but I'm going to do it anyway - I'd like to see Blake in a lake show uni next year

8:01 - Faithdalakerfan: Steve Blake is one of those guys that only look good because he's not in laker uniform

8:02 - Caliphilosopher: I would love to have Steve Blake for next year

8:29 - Faithdalakerfan - someone defend Blake

9:32 - Caliphilosopher - Blake is pretty nice for someone who was overlooked in his draft class

9:47 - TitansFan690 - Steve Blake dismantles the triangle offense

9:48 - JontheK - By the way am I the only person who things we should try to get Steve Blake?

9:48 - mmorris728: - Fisher stinks. Give me Steve Blake instead

9:50 - JonTheK - The problem is that the Trailblazers would never have traded Steve Blake to us because they knew it would make us stronger. They hate us.

Though I'm not as enamored with Fish as most of you, the best thing about this signing is....
DFish the blogger, will be cracking me up for another 3 years with his over-the-top manical discourse on how Fish is too old, can't shoot, can't dribble, can't defend, and can't make a layup.
I imagine during the third year of Fisher's contract, DFish will be in the loony bin

LEWSTRS,

You and your long peeps list better stand up for your guy DFish when he gets smoked starting game 1 and continuing throughout the season.

By game 5 number one topic on this blog with be LAKERS NEED A POINT GUARD!

Blitz mark that down.

Todd -

The only game that matters is game 1 of the Finals...

And I'll take Fish in any 7 game series...

Oh yea by who? DFish poster boy? You? Psycorp?

By Game 5 it will be Todd who needs a Brain for believing in *SCRUBS* like Jordy.

ouuccchhh!

How quickly we forget... Did you not see Q4 of Game 3 in the Finals?

Fisher isn't there to stop the other point guards. He is there to run the offense, take charges, come through in the clutch, and provide untold value in the locker room, in practice and in time-outs.

Check the facts. We just played playoff teams with point guards like Russell Westbrook and Rajon Rondo. And guess what? We have won 2 straight championships with Derek Fisher as our captain. Get your act together, haters.

A handy "big picture" reminder when Lakers lose with Dfish's 1-9 game while getting smoked on defense by opposing PG.

Fisher Game 1 Stats:

9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, ZERO turnovers.

Ray Allen who Fisher guarded:

12 points, 2 turnovers.

FAIL!

Todd writes, "The only game that matters is game 1 of the Finals... And I'll take Fish in any 7 game series..."

You said it, brother!

But for Fisher's last 8 minutes in game 3 in Boston, it's very possible the series does not come back to Los Angeles, as the Lakers lost games 4 and 5.

In that sense, in a very REAL way, D. Fisher won this latest championship for the Lakers, #16, (as he did in some ways with last year's championship, #15), not to mention Fisher's clutch 3-pointer with 5 minutes left in game 7 against Boston, which tied the game, and seemed to put the Lakers emotionally over the hump.

Fisher's jersey belongs up in the rafters, to be sure.

I think it was a must signing if only cuz Riley wanted him. He would have taken a lot of trade secrets with him to the HEAT. That would have been really really catastrophic. Great signing still, if he comes off the bench like he did when Payton came over in 2004. Fisher has lost a lot of steps, but he's a great basketball mind and a threat in a Heat uni. I believe that with a healthy Bynum next year we still have an advantage. If it take Bynum until after February to be 100% then keep him because he degrades after around 50 games anyway.

The only real threat is HEAT and they could very well win with a big body *EVENA KWAME BROWN???? YES!!!! All they need is a defensive big guy with a half brain as Riley can motivate even a Kwame to do just enough to win games IMO.
The Grizzlies are gonna be a surprise next year. I see them upseting some teams in the playoffs next year. They will be an exiting team mark my words.
Kwame would be a surprising fit. If they get Kwame people will laugh but it would work and I don't want to explain why because there are too many nuances to talk about. If they get good defensive 1 on 1 center which is Kwame Brown, they will have defense portion covered 100%. I hope they don't read my blog, but if they are willing to take a small risk like this, this team will win and it will be like the Pistons of 2004 with a 6'8 wallace at center. THEY WILL WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP IF THEY GET KWAME BROWN!!!

REPOST:

Greetings Lakeshow Fans,

Just a thought that crossed my mind and taking a different spin away from all the free-agency talk...FINALLY, DFISH will be back...about time.

Why does the media seem to ALWAYS point out players who are considered "kobe-stoppers" each year such as Tony Allen (on Yahoo sports - has agreed to join the Grizzlies) and others in the present and past like Barnes, Afflalo, Artest (just a brute on D and now KB24's teammate), Battier (who's a REALLY good one), Posey, Bell, Bowen (who I respect and no longer in the league), Prince, et al.

Why all the HYPE about who can guard KB24 EACH and EVERY YEAR? It's ridiculous...If anything, KB24 is a defensive stopper HIMSELF...just ask Rondo, JRich, DWilliams, and Westbrook this past year and others before them.

All I can say is that the most recent example of PRESERVERANCE against a defensive stopper was KB24's desire to weather the storm with Tony Allen on his hip-pocket having a REALLY messed up shooting hand, bad back, sore ankle, and bum knee...Of course KB24 will struggle a bit with a younger defensive minded ONLY player like TA with all this taken into account...Rememeber, Kobe plays on BOTH ENDS of the court...In the end, did it work for most teams? The last I checked, the Lakers a two-time defending CHAMPS and KB24 has FIVE RINGS! Hmmm...trust me, when KB24 is HEALTHY to the hIgh heavens, NO CHATTER will happen!

He ALWAYS takes on the challenge of D MINDED players assigned to make his life miserable...That's why Kobe is considered one of the greats of ALL time who never uses excuses on the court. He just PLAYS hard against any opponent and is NEVER AFRAID of facing ADVERSITY AND STOT DEFENSES!

BTW, anyone seen Ruben Patterson?

Laker pride through ALL and ANY ADVERSITY!

I STILL FEEL THE LAKERS ARE THE TEAM TO BEAT. COULD IT BE MY MORNING COFFEE OR MY EVERYDAY CONFIDENCE. PSALMS 14

For all those skeptical of Fisher, he is the "starter", but Blake will get the minutes, especially in the regular season where he will learn the triangle (hopefully quickly by all accounts) and I desperately hope we can find a b/up C and another PG to help.

I think our rookies will add if there BB IQs are up to it as their skills seem to be. With a little polishing and some strong advice from KB, these 2 could turn in to some great b/ups for now and some starters in the future.

Those who complain about Fish's ability and no longer want him are lame. They are lame because they don't see his value in clutch moments no matter how many times they are demonstrated. They are also lame because they don't understand the meaning of team and the human aspect to basketball. People are not just stats. They are humans. DFish brings a lot as a human. His speeches work. And, if it isn't about our friends and Lakers players, would you trade all the lakers for other players if it would improve guarantee a win? That wouldn't be the Lakers. The Lakers are the individuals we root for in this our fairly stable core of players, year in and year out.

We love you Fish!!

Getting Blake was a stroke of genius. He's a true PG with smarts and good passing skills. He'll learn the triangle fast and be able to give Fish enough rest during the regular season to be fresh for the playoffs (the REAL season for the Lakers).

Nice work, Mitch. Now get to work on getting a big body to keep Andrew fresh too. He will be the key to beating the Heat in the playoffs... IF they even make it past Boston and Orlando.

Morning everyone!

Thanks for the recognition MM - I greatly appreciate it.

I just wanted to check in before I head to work (long day today). It's been a while, but I hope you all have a good morning, and a great day. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to post here a bit more often than my current pace, but the 1.5 hour commute each way is kind of draining (the job is worth it though).

I'll talk to you all a bit later today! :-)

According to Broderick Turner the Lakers aren't going to pursue Shannon Brown.

From todays article:

"The Lakers now have nine players under contract and still have $1.77 million of their mid-level exception for next season. They are not expected to bring back guard Shannon Brown, meaning free agents Raja Bell and Shaun Livingston are possibilities to fill out their backcourt."

No, No, NO!!! Say it aint so Art!! MITCHHHHHHH!

I guess the question is, is Livingston or Bell more valuable than Brown?

We still need to fill 4 more spots, wouldn't be surprised if Caracter and Ebanks make it to keep costs down, that would leave just 2 more spots.

Livingston or Bell?
Matt Barnes?
Mbenga?

Good Morning..LakerNation

on-the-floor decision making---
brown v. livingston

no contest, it's the damaged mr. livingston.

so, for minimal minutes off the bench, do you want athleticism (and boy does SB bring that) or court savvy?

and I'm asking it as a real question, not as a disguised polemic.

if no bell for an extra hard-nosed defender, i'd like them both. But I'm greedy.
and I'm not the F.O. And you still want a back-up big.

@Random Lurker, DAMMNNNN, you just had to blind me with Logic didn't you? Lol! Ok you're right, my head says Mr. livingston but my heart says SHAMWOWWWWWWW !!!

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Sterns announcement last nite, He seemed like he aged 10 yrs with what happened to his Princess. It sounded like he was breathless when he had to say it was NOT a GOOD decision for him to do the DECISION. He was a CRUSHED man.

LMAO!! Good Morning NewMexicoLakerLifer. Darth Stern cushed! The funniest damn thing I've seen in a long Time. But don't play that Evil genius short, you can be sure he's cooking up something nasty and rotten as payback and you know who is in his BullsEye? The Freakin 16 time NBA champion LA Lakers.

Go back to Shannon's double / double game and his other 20 point game when Kobe was hurt. Who else could step up and do that? Give him minutes with a healthy hand!

Livingston?

Long, tall, experienced guard. Right up Phil's alley. Livingston fits the bill of Ron Harper, BJ Armstrong, Scottie Pippin (I know, he's a forward), Brian Shaw, etc...

Could be a steal, and the Triangle would limit the amount of dribbling and increase the amount of passing in his game. His natural court awareness will be on full display. I also think Livingston would jump at the chance to play in L.A. again; this time for the better team.

DBDH!

Love the resigning of Fish, Mitch figured out paying Fish $10 mill over 3 years as opposed to 2 years makes more sense (less taxes per year, and it's an option year also) however I do believe that Blake will replace him in the starting line up. As a matter of fact if 30 year old Blake can't beat out 36 year old Fish for the starting job (or better yet, the majority of minutes) in the regular season by the All-Star break, did the Lakers really solve their backcourt issue?

Lakers should sign Shannon Brown, he is their lucky charm. Ever since he joined theLakers, the team kept on winning Championships. He contributed spurts in last years WCF against Nuggets, he gave us a little relief against Ray Allen in the Finals. He is not perfect and yet not destructive to the team. There are plenty of upsides and confidence in bringing back this young man, just a cool dude not over the head SG who would create controversies. Even on the Jimmy Kimmel Show, he is funny kind of guy that you can chat and whilst time, others are so threatening because they treat themselves as super individuals. Although Lakers could replace him but we need a showman too, this is Los Angeles where sports entertainment is part of the ball game.

Like for example today is MLB All Stars game at Anaheim, if it were held in another stadium or city, it is a big deal perhaps a local boon and holiday for retailers headlined throughout the City. Well here, Fisher signings has more following and for avid fans, it's the fiesta in Madrid. Nobody seems to be enamored to see Derek Jeter bat against the young phenom pitcher.

Comparing Shannon to Raja Bell and/or Shaun Livingston is similar to comparing the sweetness of a plum to sourness of a lemon. Raja is good but hates Lakers & Kobe before, we have to sign Shannon first before welcoming Raja if there is a cap room for him. RB would be attracted at the remaining MLE while Livingston, is he related to "Dr. Livingston I presumed"? the missionary explorer lost in Africa two centuries ago. lol! Shaun has been relegated to a journeyman's life after the injury sustained with the Clippers so why should the Lakers spend damaged merchandise? There a thousand and one hoopsters willing to play with the Lakers throughout the world, why do we want the has beens and the have beens? If you ask Iniesta of Xavi Alfonso where they would play if they are basketball players, where else but the Lakers?

mamba24, when Fisher met the princess at the airport, he gave him a stunning lecture from a veteran who have accumulated 5 rings. Fisher said: "What you did the other night on National TV really sucks and I'm talking here as the President of the Players Union. It is indefensible because you were thrashing the league with over zealous aggrandizement in consort of equally shabby BSPN, it is an overkill, overhype and oversell type of show." He further ended the conversation: "lebron, I'm sorry to say today you smell worst than a rotten fish, nobody would like to be associated with you."

No one, do you hear me, NO ONE! Speaks to Princess Jimmy that way! The Lil Biatch would run screaming to Darth Stern! Hmmmm. Maybe that's why Darth Stern was looking so old when he made that announcement. LMAO!!!

You know what's amazing to me? Sasha got to live out THAT moment. The moment all of us have experienced, where it's just you, the ball and the hoop, with no one else even in the park or on the street where you play. Two free throws for the championship. Two free throws for redemption. Swoosh. One free throw for a championship. Swoosh.

And glass soda bottles? Sign me up. That was me in the wee hours of the 1980's with was some prized, cold soda in my mits. I can still feel the cool sloping weight of those bottles, something you don't get anymore in the burbs. It's all plastic and alluminum now. We were poor, so you got maybe one soda and one bag of dorritos per week, and only after picking up 10 pounds of dog S$#% from your aunt's yard.

What a treat.

Wes

Nem,

Kobe is meeting Raja face to face to get him to LA

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/news/story?id=5375672

Some excerpts:

"One source close to the situation said memories of Bell's takedown, which earned him a suspension for a Game 6 of the series -- the Suns, down 3-2, won the game at Staples Center without him -- are actually one reason why Bryant sees Bell as such an ideal teammate. The premise? Anyone with the gumption to hit Bryant that hard is someone he wants on his team."

"And the two-time defending champions still have an opening in their backcourt after signing Blake and Monday's re-signing of Derek Fisher, with Shannon Brown not expected back."

Is there any possibility the Lakers sign T-Mac? I think it is worth the gamble as he could solidify the Lakers bench and be very valuable in a matchup with Miami.

If there's anything we need from Kobe, he should stay on the sideline and have his fingers treated as well as the knee. Leave the recruiting to Mitch K., don't imitate the Tres Amigos seeking a company of their dalliance. There is a report on the news today that Kendrick Perkins had a surgery. What about the Lakers injured players? Are they on an over extended leave? Time is being wasted, our parade was over, World Cup is over..... we are now in July and in the next 6 weeks, the preseason begins.

What's going on Kobe?

Drew, What have you done with your meniscus "tear jerker" knee? This should have been operated since April. Are you afraid of surgery?

What about the shoulder injury of Mr. Chocolate man? Are you still interested in joining Team USA? Got to attend on your wife, Kloe or else we might read on the tabloid. Got to see a doctor and get a professional advice on those recurring shoulder injuries.

How about the pinched nerve of our professional head of the security of Lakers bench? If it doesn't heal, it's ok too. (lol & mean)

I think our star players are taking their sweet time and still celebrating the repeat. Are you still interested of 3peat? Then, move and do it now.

Sure there is more than a possibility. there is a distinct possibility. Kobe wants him on the team and calls him his little Brother. Tmac wants on the Team and is willing to take a reserve role and paycut. There have even been some behind the scene discussions between TMacs people and Mitch's people. Plus he trained this summer with MJ and Kobe's trainer Tim Grover who said he was physically sound.
He says he is in the best shape he has been in years & has his Hops back.So I guess it just once again comes down to Mitch.

Good morning Lakers family!

Like you all, I'm just waiting to see what miracle of a deal Mitch can come up with to complete the roster.

Are we going to fill it with cheap tasteless and generic fillers or stuff it with excellent, fine tasting, free agent vets wanting to win a Championship?

Mitch to Dr. Buss, "Dr Buss, what's my budget to fill the final spots?"

Dr. Buss in between poker hands, "I'm not sure. I'll let you know in about ten minutes whether we can afford Raja or we have to settle for J Critt"

Mitch still on the phone with Raja's agent holding, "You can tell Raja, its about 90% certain, Dr. Buss will have his money. He's in the middle of a business deal right now that's sure to give him the money."

Dr. Buss is about to draw his card as he looks down at his hand. He's holding onto a 10, jack, queen, and king of hearts. "I'll take one card please"

The dealer acknowledges his request. One card is delivered. Without even looking at the card, Dr. Buss slides a mountain of chips into the ever growing pot.

Sitting across from him, Marc Cuban is starting to sweat profusely as he nervously looks down to his hand, then back to Dr. Buss's eyes.

Danny Ainge in anger throws down his cards folding, then saying, "If I had the same core of cards I had in 2008, I would have won this pot", then storms away.

All eyes are on the card that Dr. Buss refuses to pick up. Everything will be decided by that one card. The season is in the balance for some. It will cost some plenty, just to look at it.

Dr. Buss leans back and whispers something into the ear of Miss June, she giggles. He now leans forward and reaches for the card, and says, "Fellas, its time we see what we are made of."

To be continued......

Good morning everyone,

Just read that Kobe's meeting with Raja Bell face-to-face tomorrow in L.A. Can someone please slap him? I DON'T WANT THAT JERK IN A LAKERS UNIFORM. Sorry, I hold grudges and I just can't let it go.

Morning blog fam - interesting couple of weeks.

I think Mitchy will be quiet today - let the MLB in Anaheim have their shining moment, now impeded by Yankee George (RIP).

He will give the stage to Steve Blake tomorrow, then deal with our final couple slots. Maybe Raja but a big is way more important given AB17's injury prone status. We can't keep riding the Pau train - he was too exhausted this year.

Don't like to see Shannon go and still hold out hope he doesn't. But it's a biz at the end of the day.

Cheers - PLG

Yes, I'm definitely in that camp my Prince. And ABSOLUTELY NOT, to answer your question...how could I hold a grudge against you when you have so graciously worn a thong in honor of your Lakerholism all these years? LOL...ME LOVE MAMBA!!!

Mamba24,

"By the way...You don't have no grudges against me...Do you? Lol!"

~~With advance apologies, this is what Judas told Jesus during last supper. Well, in the previous post, Mamba said:

MM:

Any news on Bynum?

Oh and I forgot.........

Coke is a girl's drink too. But I like mine with a lime/lemon.

I think what is not being rported on Fish's contract.... 3 years $10.5mm PLUS: my jersey in the rafters when we get one more banner.

And for those contract buffs - do all the additional perks (helicopters, suites, special food, etc) go against the contract $ as well. Maybe Fish negotiated a bunch of new perks for himself to make his less than lucrative contract more valuable?

I love you Fish! And Blake - welcome to the Lake Show - it's continents away from the Clippers.

Cheers - PLG

Edwin Gueco you are a vicious, Vicious man! OH THE HUMANITY!
I just happened to be trying to figure out how to write a HaiKu, and I found it wasn't my thing. So here is what I was really trying to say in my Haiku:
*
Good Morning: Mari. G. The most Beautiful Being in all of Creation, whose Beauty is only exceeded by her , Wisdom, Patience & Understanding. You take my Breath away! You’ve already taken my Heart!!

"Plus he trained this summer with MJ and Kobe's trainer Tim Grover who said he was physically sound."

If true and he'll sign for vet minimum, it's a no brainer. I wasn't a believer before, but now I think perhaps this could salvage the offseason (which I give a D right now)

Good Morning Blog !

Now with Fish finally inked, our starting five remains intact and ready to start the hunt for the 17th banner.

Starting five:
Fish
Kobe
RonRon
Pau
Sox

Bench mob so far:
Blake
Lamar
Vujacic

I really really really love having Blake in a purple and gold uniform.
I know Kobe is recruiting Bell now. But I'm a little more iffy about that one.
If we manage to sign Bell then our most athletic player instantly becomes Lamar who is what, 29/30 already?
Of course that will change once our two second rounders get signed (Character, Evanks and yeah I think both will make the team). But can't really count those guys in as impact makers just yet.

Plus, we still also need a back up C.
What's the word on Mbenga? are we going on a different direction, are there any big men available at the right price at all?

At any rate, I understand and value all the good things that Bell could potentially bring to the table. But I'm a little too worried about getting older and going against young athletic teams that are just getting better and better.

Fatty, as of now that hand looks like a brick.

Still need to catch one of 15 outs to win... some outs obv better than others.

And that's why I lova ya too. Gotta love us Lakerholics.

Hi Mamba24 - I'm good - real good! Thanks for being so sweet.

Just fyi - the haiku is 5-7-5 (number of syllables per line). Like this:

LOL - just playing with you!!!! I thought you may need a good ROTFLMAO in the morning!!!

HAVE A GREAT DAY LARRY!!!!

THREE-PEAT BEATS THE HEAT!!!!

Mamba24

I would take T-Mac in a back-up role on the Lake Show anyday but it has to be at a huge bargain due to his history of injuries. I'm sure Ron Ron can reach out to his ex-teammate if that were an option. Don't know how low he'll go on the salary end though...that might be a deal-breaker.

CORRECTED:

Mamba twenty-four
Thong wearing Lakerholic
Please cover your eyes

Larry - you KNOW I'm just messing wit ya!!

JustAnotherMambafan, you can mess with me anytime you damn well feel like it. LOl!

Fish's lay up from the left side in Game 3 Q4 when mugged by Davis with KG and PP aiding and abetting is the greatest 'underwhelming' shot in NBA Final's history.

'Underwhelming?' Well it's not a spectacular shot ... it you saw any guy make an open below the rim lay up like that, you'd never think anything of it. But against three defenders all capable of crushing that shot on a block?

I think the margin of error between when that shot gets blocked and/ or Fish goes down on the hard foul before he gets the shot off is way less than the 0.4 in San Antonio.

That is the signature basket for the 09-10 Laker Championship and must go down in the Laker Top Ten Hall of Fame shots right up there ... oops ... right down there with Big Shot Bob against the Queens.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

My gut tells me that there is one more player that we need. There's one more player out there who needs a ring. Just as Thriller was brought on to give this team a reason to win. To redeem Thriller as a Champion.

Ebanks will be brought on to bring youthful energy. Now we need that veteran who needs a ring to cement his career. Bell? TMac?

Someone.

I would LOVE to see Shaun Livingston in a Lakers jersey.

Absolutely.

GO LAKERS!!!!

I personally would like to have Shannon over Raja..younger, more athletic, been in the triangle for a couple years..unless they can get both, i would lock up Shannon first..

Double B...

I favor Shannon over Raja as well. I think it will come down to dollars. If Raja comes for the minimum, Shannon is history.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RAJAAAAAAA BELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!

NOOOOOOOOOOO KOBEEEEEEEEE DONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNT MEEEEEEEET HIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
