Poll question: Shannon Brown or Sasha Vujacic?

There seemed to be some debate recently over whether the Lakers would be better served with Shannon Brown or Sasha Vujacic. Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak told reporters that he intends to keep five guards on the roster, which at this point would include Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher, Steve Blake, Brown and Vujacic. But with Brown yet to reach a deal, you just never know. Additionally, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Brian Windhorst recently reported on Twitter that the Lakers were considering trading Vujacic and a first-round pick to the Cavaliers for Delonte West, increasing Brown's chances to stay.

Our Lakers beat writers, Mike Bresnahan and Broderick Turner,  have been on top of the free-agency news and will update everyone whenever anythey're available. But in the meantime, I thought it'd be good to get an exact percentage on where Lakers fans stood if the team ultimately had to choose one of the two players.

Marky Mark,

>>> A better alternative would be the Laker FO to "buyout" Luke's 3 year contract

It won't be a buyout. The Lakers could claim a medical exemption if Luke can't play this upcoming season.

I think we should keep Shannon Brown over Sheshe. I think their pros and cons make their value pretty much equal except for the fact that Sheshe just provides extra motivation to the other team because everyone thinks he's too annoying. I say we use him as a trading chip.

As for Rudy Fernandez, he would be a really nice fit in the system and also a very decent backup to Kobe. But let's face it. He will not want to come and the Blazers' FO will not do a conference rival such a favor.

On Delonte West, I think we should pick him up just so that Lebron's Mom can have more options for another hour long special on ESPN for "The Ultimate Decision" to decide where to take her talents to next season. Will she stay in Cleveland? Move to Minnesota/LA or South Beach? Other than that, he carries too much baggage.

Rick F -

My understanding was that Laker fans on here wanted to sign Delonte AFTER he is waved by Minnesota, as expected.

I vote to keep both---and somehow determine if Mr. Walton should or will retire --not likely to happen any time soon until he at least attempts his "comeback"---seems that time is on our side on the issue of trading Sasha while seeing what Luke is going to do (ie trade deadline)---in the meantime sign Brown and the two rookies...

NOT ONLY SAY NO TO DELONTE WEST, BUT HELL NO !!!

not even mentioning his character issues and brushes with the law and his seemingly unstable nature, and that he really isn't that good (okay i did just mention it)... I couldn't stand him being a Laker because I physically can't stand to look at him for longer than a nano second or so---

that dude is one ugly mo fo ---he is fugliest guy in the NBA, makes Kenyon Martin look like fricking Rock Hudson, maybe even Elvis---he really makes me want to retch---I would have to buy the Delonte filter for my TV, special radium resistent glasses and a bag for my head... and that wouldn't help enough...

if he was so good these other teams involved (Cleveland, Minnesota)----would want to keep him---that speaks volumes to me when the Minnesota Timberwolves want to release a guy--oh please Mitch, don't bring in the evil Leprechaun with the four foot chin....

I don't even care if he was good, with Chick gone and no word's eye view available on the radio, my Laker exposure would have to be reduced to word of mouth or smoke signals...and i bet he's too ugly for them as well...

Delonte West? really? oh for the love of rectal tissues...

if that happened I don't know if I could honestly post this anymore:

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON) TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

How about our 2 draft picks?
Mitch hasn't spoken much about them, they looked really good during summer league, i know that doesnt translate into playing REAL NBA games but still, hard work pays off in any sports league...
I really dont want Delonte West in this team, the whole team is going to be fighting for the love of Kobe lol, Artest has the upper hand right now

oh hells no. Delonte West? What if he hits on Kobe's mom? Seriously, given the choice, I would keep both Sasha and Shannon. They give us completely different skill sets, but I don't think there is anything unreasonable about carrying five guards, especially with Kobe potentially having health issues, or at least a risk of health issues if he plays too many minutes. Sure, you would have to chain him to the bench to keep him off the court, but still.

Anyway, I think Sasha will retain his value as an expiring contract until the trading deadline, and that gives us some flexibility if we develop another need and want to find another player, and it gives him a chance to actually show if he's worth anything. I don't think his trade value is going to get any lower than it is after last season, ie, nothing but a warm body, and expiring contract, and the ability to make 2 free throws.

But, it's not my money. I mean, it sort of would be if I bought tickets, but I don't think anybody is more likely to buy tickets because we have sasha on the roster.

Anyhoo.

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE

GO LAKERS!

guys.....how can we dump WALTON's big contract....he's not worth it and often injured....waste of money....why dont the LAKERS just buy him out and then make him an assistant coach so we can bring back Shannon !!!!!!

puddle,

>>> My understanding was that Laker fans on here wanted to sign Delonte

I guess here comes another poll. I read the comments differently, which was the point of my post.

Personally, I'm sort of intrigued with the idea. It would really send LeBron over the edge, which has enormous appeal to me. And as some have pointed out, the guy does have a good stroke.

As much I agree with those who have pointed out that the chemistry of the team can only be messed with so much, I guess my preferences are (1) Sasha, (2) Delonte, and lastly (3) Shannon.

@Jay Jay.. i too dont like eddie house to miami.. but i do NOT fear miami either.

@Lakertruth... good pts about LeCraBSPN..if that was MJ they would do the same.. stern controls everything.. BSPN is a business like nike who would bend over backwards for stern... its always about the $$$$$.

@MM.. correct me if i'm wrong but there's a reason lakers have not signed shannon yet... they are trying to unload sashas contract.. i think its pretty clear this is what mitch's intentions are.. he may lose shannon in waiting but its a chance hes willing to take.. that said shannon would be a very nice attraction to madison square garden fans with their uptempo offense.

@floyd.. HEEELLL NO to delonte.. we dont need nobody tryin to shoplift the pootie from the lakermoms.

Aloha

Personally I hope they keep both players. If Sasha regains his confidence he could
be that shooter off the bench that we still need. If he doesn't a 5 million dollar expiring contract can come in handy at the trade deadline. You never know when an unexpected steal will present itself(i.e Pau.)

MH

Neither guy is worth their jersey but we need a body. Delonte West?? Come on....If I thought Mitch had a sense of humor, and I don't, signing West and giving Lebron's Mom season tickets would be pee your pants funny.....Can you imagine every game....there's Lebron's Mom! You could do a reality show. Maybe get Ron involved. Forget basketball. Just make Lebron insane!

lets take a stroll down memory lane..

do not read past here if you are easily prone to nervous breakdowns or manic depression

JULY 3, 2007... one of the worst days in laker history or otherwise known as LAKERS BLACK SUNDAY

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2922663

Ok so maybe you dont get Delonte West. Would it be so wrong for the Lakers to make Delonte West masks for everyone to wear when Miami came to town?? That would be the funniest thing in basketball.....ever.

I know about the Lakers keeping Sasha for the upcoming season and then dangling him at the deadline, but the franchise would still have to pay so why not just have Shannon? That's the whole point about the trade- but it will take time for Mitch and the rest of the parties to come to a solution.

End of the day I still think these Delonte sexual innuendos about him making out with some player's moms is a bit overblown and mostly media hype, but I understand that these "rumors" get legs of their own. But at the same time, let's be honest Laker Nation, it's unlikely to happen and if it were to happen I'd be the first guy on here saying I was wrong and whatever.

The Lakers are a CLASS organization and if they believed X player would help the Lakers 3peat, they'd bring him in. It's all about skillsets + $'s matching up. At this point Sasha's stats don't warrant a $5Mil+ contract. Shannon however has a case about his $ situation. As far as I'm concerned this is purely a financial deal. If they thought Sasha was worth it, they wouldn't have a problem keeping him on board. Even if that was the case, the Lakers just need to sign one more guard for the next season. SB and SV aren't required but they know they can save $ and still maybe add depth at the G.

Delone West?

ASININE!!!

NO effing WAY!!!

First off, he ain't that good! He's a freak! He bedded his star teammates mother, that's not a rumor anymore, it's real. The guy is a gangster wanna-be with gun issues up the wazoo. He's mentally unstable. Bad body language, i.e., negativity issues. Hugely ugly, waaaaaaaaaay too many tats -- Matt Barnes is enough already insofar as ugly dudes with too many tatoos!

LOUDER: NO EFFING WAY!!!!

I prefer Sasha! I hope the Lakers bite the bullet and keep him for now. Expired contracts are deemed very attractive to other teams around the trading deadline, much more so than the dog days of summer! Sasha can be a deadly shooter and can play strong defense. He stretches the floor because somebody always has to guard against his potential outside shooting capability.

Keep them both, but if you have to keep one, keep Sasha and toss the idea about D. West into the toilet and flush it along with Delonte himself!

Shannon over Sashsa for sure.

Shannon 3rd string PG for tempo and youth

dont trade sasha..thats gonna be the biggest mistake they'll do for this season..seriously he's a good shooter, and there's big room for improvement..if they trade him, sasha will be a big problem, look the lakers trained and mold him, and then what, other teams can benefit..yah right..so pls keep him..if sasha will be traded, lakers will lost many fangirls...thats for sure...hahaha

In my mind the biggest impact player player we could get would be

Mark Gasol (or any stron back up Center) . I think we should be willing to give up

several draft picks (1st and second rounders). Its his last year with his Memphis

contract. And couple players and a couple picks...?

In my mind the end result of a series of trades should net us

another back up center (Mark Gasol) and ..if lucky...2 shooting guards (one second

string defensive/veteran, and one third string offensive/youth).

My reasoning is thus..... Minute away from Bynum to give him a full healthy

season. Does the most good of any single move. That 'Big Man" advantage is where

we will have our greatest advantage.

The other two guards acquired in many ways.

To consider: Pick up Shannon as a PG to provide leadership to the 3rd string.

Tempo change, taco time, young guns...

To Consider: ...If Luke Walton can be considered ineligible for the season, we

get 2/3rds of his salary back to replace him, and he is not counted against our

roster. This gives us about 3.7 million. This would help if possible.

1st Move...Make sure we don't lose Shannon.. (wait if possible, but move)

2nd move ..Trade to Sasha to Timberwolves (with a pick). For A Guard (Dante west)

and a Center (2nd String). Or any other player that Memphis would want. At this

point we are better off with any good 2nd string center than with Sasha. This is

especially true if we can pick up a shooting Guard in Europe with the 'Luke

excemption'.

3rd move.. Players from Timber wolves to Memphis (with 2011 1st round and 2012 2nd

round picks) for Mark Gasol. (possible player pick up for Portland)
If this move only got us Mark it was worth it. These picks are useless for a team

forging a 3 year championship run. Especialailly if the rookies are sign. Which i

am in greatly in favor of (carry 15).

4th Move..... Pick to Portland for Rudy
....... Euro League Guard with exception from Luke.
....... Rookie with promise (extra rookies to training camp)
........ Mid season trade (hold extra 'trade able' players

5th Move ......Hold 15 on roster this season (13 plus the rookies).
......More options mid season when the mid season trade run

for play offs begins.

I know Theo is now 2nd string....and he is great. But another center and will suck up 18 minutes a game ...and Bynum is that much fresher for the play offs. Plus his value to the team, confidence, trade value, and 3 peat, all hinge on him being healthy. We need 3 Centers this season. We have our defensive/veteran, lets go and get some young legs to suck up minutes.

The Miami gang will only hang together if they win either ONE of the next two. Otherwise Riley is gonna start loosen 'top' players who came lookin for a ring. So we should go all out in these next 2 years to build a MONSTAR!! Go Lakers!!

Sasha fouls too often -- when we're out of team fouls --

As soon as he gets into the game he usually gives the other team 2-4 points this way.

Shannon is a much better defender.

m.

Sasha Vujacic.

Every NBA team should keep an ex-jugoslavian player in its roster.

They're blood-cooled when necessary (see free-throws in game 7), provoking when necessary, tough when necessary.

Maybe Vujacic isn't the greatest example of ex-jugoslavian player of all times, but he's what we have. Let's keep him.

Marco 64

for the record, kobe's mom is FOINE!!! for that reason alone, I don't pick up delonte west...

as for shannon vs. sasha, jerry west says we need a slasher and while shannon is not really a good slasher, he has the tools to become one.

sasha is not NBA material. he'll probably do better in europe where he belongs.

Lakerville sleeping

bloggers arrive soon

Good morning,

How do you know we're in the dog days of the dog days of summer? A passionate and spirited debate about the 8th player on the Lakers depth chart. Whether it's Sasha, Shannon, or Delonte West, the player filling this position will see 10-15 MPG. It's great to be a fan of the defending back-to-back NBA champs. Our biggest topic of concern is whether to have chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry ice cream.

Delonte West???!!! Are you guys out of your friggin minds? Aside from the fact that the guy is locoweed batshat crazy, he's just not that good. I wouldn't even trade Sasha for him straight up.

Look, this is the LAKERS we're talking about, the classiest team in the NBA, NOT the Thuggets. We already are over our quota of crazy.

Mitch, hurry up and sign Shannon, so all this goofy trade talk will finally end.

I'm sure you woke up early this morning just to read the daily snark on LeBron James. Here's the headline: LeBron James Flips Off Hometown DJ.

All the guy wanted was a photo with "The King." His plea for the photo-opp was a simple, "Akron still loves you."

If you wish to read on for the sordid details, watch a video report, and see a photo of the flip-off, here's the link.

http://huff.to/9PJONp

I ask you, apart from James' brawn and motor skills, what's appealing about this guy? He defined himself by refusing to shake hands after the Orlando Magic spanked his team in the playoffs. He misled the Cav's owner into thinking the team had a chance to retain him, all the while colluding to obtain something else. He chose his own interviewer for an ESPN special that bored America to tears. He partied like a rock star in Vegas, then leaned on ESPN to spike an undercover story by its own reporter. Then flips-off a hometown fan who only wants to take a photo with him. And he's still David Stern's poster boy for the NBA. Go figure!

Personally, I think both are expendable. How about trading both plus Odom for Derron? Bottomline is we want to keep on winning...

Knicks are a better fit for Brown and Sasha is a better fit for the lakers even though his contract makes the lakers want to ship his ass out.

Mark
Mitch said in jest about the poll right? Or did you make this up in a facetious way?

One more thing Mark. I am sure this poll may be skewed alittle as some people are probably choosing Shannon because of Sasha's contract while Brown will cost less.

Ludwig,

Delonte West plays good defense but he has SERIOUS mental health issues. Everyone says that Thriller is crazy. No, Thriller is eccentric. Delonte West is motherfricken KRAZY. Not Dennis Rodman crazy. Get-me-on-meds-now-or-really-bad-things-are-going-to-happen KRAZY.

He has full on panic attacks while flying.

He was armed to the teeth with guns and knives because voices were telling him that demons were going to invade from the skies at any moment.

Yeah.

So, it's not a great idea to bring him on the team if we want to build chemistry.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

>>>First, remember that the Trade Exception works both directions--either
>>>team cannot take more than 125% of their player(s) contracts plus an
>>>additional $100k.

Actually, that's not true.

That rule only applies to teams that are over the salary cap. If the Lakers traded Sasha to a team with cap space (don't know if there are any teams with cap space left) equal to his salary, then they don't have to take back ANY salary. They could trade Sasha for NO players with NO salary and a trade exception.

ORRRRRR...

If a team HAS a trade exception equal to Sasha's contract or bigger, then they can trade part or all of that trade contract to the Lakers for nothing. I know that Cleveland and Toronto both have big trade exceptions.

So those are two ways that the Lakers could trade Sasha without taking any salary back.

Tell Shannon thanks for the 2 years, and make Sasha a spot up shooter. He shoots well enough too play the role of Korver, JR Smith, etc if they trust him and don't pull him out every time he misses a shot.

I would rather pick up Shannon Brown ... for his athletisism is a plus for the lakers and he's one of our energy guys ... nobody from our laker bench has a skill set like his.

With Sasha he's 3pts and freethrows can be replaces by Matt Barnes and Blakes skill set.

So for me Keep Shannon because I also wanna see Caracter and Ebanks in our line up ...

Yeah Baby Yeah

Go LALAKERS!!! 2011

I PERSONALLY THINK THEY'RE EQUALLY VALUABLE. SHANNON BRINGS AN ENERGISM THAT THE LAKERS SOMETIMES BADLY NEEDS, AND HIS DUNKS ARE AS GOOD AS THEY COME. HOWEVER. I THINK SASHA HANDLES THE BALL BETTER, WHICH IS ALSO NEEDED IN CRUCIAL SITUATIONS. I'M HOPING THE LAKERS CAN KEEP THEM BOTH. I REALLY LOVE BOTH OF THEIR ATTITUDES. PSALMS 100

Ship out both Luke and Sasha and first round pick to Minnesota for Kev. Love the rights to Rubio & "Planes trains and automobiles youd betta have my Doughnuts" Then trade Delonte West and K. Love to Atlanta Hawks for Maurice Evans and Joe Smith. Anyway the Lakers have to talk to former Laker assistant coach now hawks head coach, Larry Drew and get Mo Evans and Joe Smith off his roster and on to this Lakers squad. Especially if Shannon opts for the Knicks.....Mo Evans would be just what we need!

Jon K.

I know, we're on the same page as far as Delonte Nutjob West, that's why I said it was "asinine" to even consider him.

NO WAY!

Frankly, the guy creeps me out!

Sasha COULD become a spot up shooter, but with the team he's had, the Lakers deferring to him everytime someone got double teamed, he shot in the low 30s. Don't you guys think seriously, that he should have had a better year considering the Lakers could be put in the position that they are in right now: not willing to fork the big $5 for him, for the next year and trading him for a blue chipper, even as crazy as Delonte West? LMao seriously that's how disillusioned they are with Sasha, a gritty, pesky, youthful kid as opposed to Delonte a crazy, often times deranged, but hustler, type who allegedly slept with Lebron's mother.

I think the Lakers changed their tune regarding Delonte when they heard the Knicks gave Shannon a monster contract on the table. They first thought they could trade Sasha for Delonte to waive him then re-sign SB. That might not happen and the Lakers would offer a contract similar but lower than Sashas contract (around $3-4MIL) a year if they lose Shannon. I don't think he was dependable, and money might not be the only reason why they would like to rid of his contract. Delonte is a better shooter, defender, more lanky, has enough hops to d up taller wingmen, and probably hungrier to win since he doesn't have a ring himself.

As I look at the current roster, what I see missing is a real backup for Kobe.

I don't think Shannon or Sasha fit that role.

As for FAs I only see McGrady, but he thinks he deserves starter minutes and doesn't understand hes only a role player now.

So, what does that leave?

I think they should keep trying to unload Sasha. Either a trade for a non guaranteed contract player or for a real palyer / backup for Kobe and let Shannon sign with the Knicks.

Just my thoughts...

Shannon Brown is good at only one thing... dunking. He is terrible at playing in the triangle and is a subpar defender. Get him off the team.

delonte west? laker players, better get a body guard to surround YOUR MOM! "how player is that?"

MITCH,

TRADE SASHA TO THE KNICKS,FOR TMAC.THIS DEAL WILL WORK.GRANTED TMAC IS NOT 100% YET.BUT,HE WANTS TO PLAY FOR THE LAKERS,AND WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP.I CAN SEE HOW TMAC WILL BE EXTREMLY MOTIVATED TO COME TO LA AND SHOW EVERYONE THAT HE STILL CAN PLAY IN THE NBA.ON ,THE FLIP SIDE OF COURSE THIS COULD BACKFIRE,BUT I HAVE SEEN THIS SCENARIO PLAY OUT POSITIVE TOO MANY TIMES WITH OTHER HIGHLY TALENTED STARS.WHO HAVE TAKEN A BACK SEAT,OR BACK UP ROLE,AND HAVE DUG DOWN DEEP AND EITHER FOUND THAT TALENT AGAIN,OR REDEFINED THERE GAME.JUST TO NAME A FEW FOR EXAMLPLE: KURT WARNER,WHO GOT INJURED AND LOST HIS STARTING JOB TO MARC BULGER,AND THEN WENT TO NY GIANTS,AND AGAIN LOST HIS STARTING JOB TO ELI MANNING,AND THEN WENT TO ARIZONA AND LOST HIS JOB TO MATT LIENART,HOWEVER CAME BACK THRU HARD WORK,AND BEAT OUT LEINART FOR THE STARTING JOB,AND EVENTUALLY BROUGHT THE NEVER BEFORE CARDINALS TO THERE FIRST SUPER BOWL,ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS DENNIS ECKERSLY.HE WAS DEMOTED FROM A SUCCESSFULL STARTER TO A RELIEVER,HE WAS SO CLOSE TO RETIRING,AND THEN HE PERSERVERED AND BECAME ONE OF THE GREATEST CLOSERS ON BASEBALL OF ALLTIME,AND WON THE MVP,AND CY YOUNG AWARD IN ONE SEASON.AND OF COURSE TOPPED IT OFF WITH AN INDUCTION INTO THE HALL-OF -FAME.THERE MANY OTHER STORIES COMPARABLE TO THESE 2.I CAN SEE WERE TMACS PRIDE HAS TAKEN A GIANT HIT.REPORTERS,SCOUTS,COACHES FROM THE NBA HAVE SAID HE HAS LOST A STEP OT TWO.THEY SAY HE CANT OR WILL NOT PLAY DEFENSE.THEY SAY HIS WORK ETHIC IS POOR.I,SAY HE WAS AT ONE TIME ONE OF THE MOST GIFTED,TALENTED.EXPLOSIVE,PUREST,AND STREAKIEST SHOOTERS IN ALL OF THE NBA.HE HAS A MAJOR CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER,AND THESE ARE THE TYPE OF PLAYERS LA COULD USE.AND I AM NOT SAYING OR PREDICTING TMAC WILL EVER BE MENTIONED AS A STORYLINE ENDING COMPARABLE TO DENNIS,OR KURT,BUT WOULDNT BE GREAT IF IT COULD HAPPEN TO BOTH TMAC AND LA LAKERS.
