Plenty to take away from Laker Girls auditions

55016085

Just when he thought he had the whole weekend to himself, Peter Gibbons ran into Bill Lumberg to hear the dreadful news.

"I'm going to need you to come in tomorrow at about 9 o'clock," Lumberg told Gibbons in "Office Space." So much for the whole idea that if Gibbons ducked out early on Friday afternoon, he wouldn't have to worry about going to work on Saturday at the dreaded place called Initech. Had Gibbons been asked to work on a Saturday morning to cover the Laker Girls auditions, however, he probably would have jumped up and down and canceled his date with the Chotskies waitress (Jennifer Aniston). Or maybe I'm thinking just how I would've reacted.

Beyond enjoying the Laker Girls' company, there are several things I took away from the audition: I have no idea how to judge dancing. Laker Girls really seemed split on their favorite Laker, including Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher and Shannon Brown, meaning that the Lakers' re-signing Brown will bolster the bench and improve Laker Girl morale. And I may have just planted the seeds of a rivalry between the Laker Girls and the Heat dancers.

(Kudos to business reporter Nathan Olivarez-Giles for shooting and editing the video.)

POMPOUS DRAMA QUEEN... Thanks for the link to ESPN Los Angeles story about Jeremy Lin...
Here is a reprint of the article:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“A new name has emerged as a candidate to fill a spot on the Los Angeles Lakers' bench as a backup to starting guards Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant.
~
Jeremy Lin, an undrafted 6-3, 200-pound combo guard from Harvard, is being considered by the Lakers after the team opened contract discussions with Roger Montgomery, Lin's agent, over the weekend.
~
"We're just trying to sort out the best roster fit, the best situation for Jeremy, but we're highly considering the Lakers," Montgomery said in a phone interview Monday.
~
Montgomery said the Lakers aren't the only team vying for Lin, with the Mavericks and an unnamed Eastern Conference team also in the mix. Added Montgomery: "As of late there are a few more players involved as well."
~
Lin averaged 9.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent on three-pointers in five games while playing for the Dallas Mavericks summer league team in Las Vegas.
~
The 21-year-old guard should be landing on an NBA roster -- the Lakers' or another team's -- sooner than later.
"I think the end game is imminent," Montgomery said. "We're having some internal discussions [with the Lakers] that look positive. There's mutual interest and end game is certainly imminent. The Lakers are definitely in the mix."
~
The California native (Lin won a state championship at Palo Alto High School) turned heads last week in a summer league matchup against the Washington Wizards and No. 1 pick John Wall. Lin scored 13 points to Wall's 21, but did so on 6-for-12 shooting in just 28 minutes. Wall was 4-for-19 in 33 minutes. Lin averaged 16.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 2.4 blocks and 1.1 steals in his senior year at Harvard, earning a unanimous spot on the All-Ivy League first team.
~
Lin would become the first American-born player of Asian descent (Lin's family is Taiwanese) to play in the NBA since Watura "Wat" Misaka in 1947.”
AWESOME!!!!
My wife had 'polish the silver', on my "Honey do list," and I came across this info...I quickly thought of Lebron James and his 'brand' (silver).
****************
The luster and beauty of well-kept 'brand' is unmistakable. Properly cared for, 'brands' will last for many generations. With a little maintenance and a few preventative measures, you can even cut down on the amount of time you spend polishing 'brands', as well.
THE ENEMY
Tarnish is 'brand's enemy. 'Brands' tarnishes when it's exposed to ego and certain teams. Outside of regular cleaning, you can keep 'brands' tarnish free by following these general rules of thumb:
NEVER let 'brands' come in contact with Dwane Wade. This includes Chris Bosh, Pat Riley, Udonis Haslem, and Mario Chalmers. Dwane Wade contains one ring, which will cause your 'brand' to corrode.
NEVER allow ESPN and Jim Gray to come in contact with your 'brand.' When these two touch, 'brands' becomes damaged and stained.
DON'T expose fine 'brands' to certain players for long periods of time. Never leave team mates hanging leaving them with feelings containing betrayal, dishonesty, or anger. The anomosities in these players will corrode 'brands'.
USING 'brands' prevents tarnish. The more you use and handle your 'brand', the less chance there'll be for tarnish to buildup. Tarnished 'brands' needs to be used to keep it shiny.
Repost:
While it is true that it is only summer league, Caracter, Ebanks and Lin showed skills and intelligence that belie their youth and where they were and weren't selected in the draft(Lin went undrafted). Unlike gunners in Von Wafer, Morrison and many others who lit up the summer league with their propensity for only shooting, Caracter, Ebanks and Lin showed a multi-skill set and team first approach.
Derrick Caracter finished as the third best player overall in VSL behind Cousins and Wall. It's not a stretch at all to say that he could've been the best player overall if he weren't such a willing passer and if he weren't playing with the worst guards in the entire SL! Caracter's offensive repetoire were on full display in the post and he consistently hit the mid range jumper from the high post(something LO can't do consistently, even when left open. He ended up having better stats and FG percentage than DeMarcus Cousins, despite having fewer FGAs. In the final two games, Caracter was 6/9 and 3/6 from the field with the guards taking shots in both those games. In Cousins final game, he was 1/12 from the field, 1 of 12! Caracter was 60% from the field over 5 games. Where Caracter needs to dramatically improve at is defense, fouls and turnovers. With more conditioning and familiarity with the Triangle, he should vastly improve and be a force for us down in the blocks. While he may be undersized, we must remember that he'll still be going up against the backup 5 of opposing teams, which I believe he can handle. I've been pining for a burly, physical, glass eating PF who can come in and give us a change of pace player and bang around in the post(still disappointed in us passing on DeJuan Blair last year). We may have found him.
It has been overstated, but Ebanks is Ariza all over again, but may potentially be so much better. He has shown that he's a team player by doing just about everything asked of him. Defending, scoring, rebounding, passing and just plain getting after it. His offense is a lot better than he showed in college, including his three point shooting. At 6'9, he's a Teradactyl defensively out on the wing and like Ariza plays the passing lanes well. He needs to get stronger, continue to work on his shooting and play stickier on the ball defense(tends to gamble or reach and roams on defense a little too much). This kid has a great attitude and appeared to listen to the coaches very well. He also seemed to know how to find his spots in the offense. We may have found more than a replacement for Ariza. This is for those who were wishing to see what it would've been like to have both Artest/Ariza playing defense on the floor together for the same team. Wish granted.
Last but not least, Jeremy Lin. Another team oriented player with a fearless streak to boot. He's shown a knack for attacking the rim, hit the mid range jumper and making smart passes. He's also a pretty good rebounder and feisty defender. He also seems to relish challenges which is good. A very intelligent player, who moves well with or without the ball in his hands, which makes him another good fit in our offense. He can't be compared to Sun Yue, because Sun didn't produce in D-League or SL the way Lin has. With Fish nearing the end of his career and Blake not too far behind, having someone like Lin could be heaven sent. Shooting from distance seems to be an area of weakness, but I'm sure he can improve on it. I used to shake my head at the fact that Jordan Farmar/Shannon Brown wanted to shoot three pointers and jumpers more than attack the hoop, which was their true strength. Lin may give us that guard who is willing to penetrate no matter the harm it may cause him. That's why he's intriguing, that's why we want him in a Laker uniform.
I agree with MM, that it's hard to truly gauge anything from SL, but it's still important for players who are multi-skilled. If it weren't so important, then why would #1 pick, John Wall play and put himself at risk? Do his numbers reflect that he's not as dominant as some think because this is SL? Or is it a precursor of greater things to come from Wall? Did Cousins have to prove anything during SL? So if so called experts and analysts were all heaping praise on Wall and Cousins during SL play, why should we be cautiously optimistic and guarded about our enthusiasm about Caracter, Ebanks and Lin?
Laker Girls are a wonderful, wonderful thing.
What do we play for? RINGS!!!
Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.
GO LAKERS!!!
MM - Here are 2 questions I would like answered...
If you could get away with it, which Laker player would you date...
What career will you pursue after being a Laker Girl...Acting, Dancing, or do you want Lisa Estrada's job...
i dont see how this jeremy lin kid can fit in our plans unless lakers wanna carry 3 rookies or will take him over caracter/banks which is crazy.. last 2 roster spots should go to guys who can contribute NOW.. thats a guard and a backup big
and anyone know if the final figures of dfish outrageous 3 YEAR contract extension was announced yet?
and MM.. i'm wondering why you would even include livingston in the poll?
MM??? Buddy??? You didn't use MY picture for this??? LOL!!!
and sorry if i'm about 4 threads behind but i'm GM for a day i waive luke (EFFECTIVE ASAP) and hire yellofever as asst GM to be groomed for position as future GM of the los angeles lakers. thats a guaranteed dynasty!
A lotta great sci fi movie suggestions - thanks everyone!
I'd like to add an honorable mention - The Fly. It's not even because of the plot or acting. It's just that every time i see Jeff Goldblum - doesn't matter what he's doing - I think of that movie & keep waiting for him to turn into a fly! That's gotta count for something, right? LOL!
@YELLOFEVER... “i dont see how this jeremy lin kid can fit in our plans unless lakers wanna carry 3 rookies or will take him over caracter/banks which is crazy.. last 2 roster spots should go to guys who can contribute NOW.. thats a guard and a backup big.”
~
You have to remember that we’re talking about Lin being the 12th or 13th player on the roster and maybe even spending some time in the D-League. Ebanks and Caracter have already made the squad by virtue of their low salaries and performance in summer league. The 8-man rotation has already been set. Kobe, Fish, Ron, Pau, and Drew start. Odom, Blake, and Vujacic come off the bench to replace Derek, Ron, and either Pau or Drew, with Kobe sliding to the 3. Other than a few minutes that Luke used to get backing up Ron and Kobe at the 3, there is no other playing time available other than garbage. Lin and a backup insurance center would be the best picks to complete the roster. They will contribute in practice – just like Mbenga and Ammo last year. I would rather have a kid like Lin who could become a valuable player than UPS who has already hit the ceiling.
GUARD JEREMY LIN, UNFORTUNATELY FOR MAVS, NOW A COMMODITY
By Brad Townsend for SportsDayDFW blog
http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/07/guard-jeremy-lin-unfortunately-for-mavs.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Undrafted Jeremy Lin, a 6-foot-3 guard from Harvard, had an eye-opening trial run with the Mavericks summer league team in Las Vegas.
~
But he played so well, averaging 9.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals in five games, that Dallas now is fending off the Lakers and other teams in an effort to sign Lin to a contract.
~
Roger Montgomery, Lin's San Antonio-based agent, said he is negotiating with the Mavericks and others. "It's imminent," he said. "We're going to do something rather soon.
~
"What I'm doing now is reviewing information, looking at rosters and then trying to determine what's going to be the best fit for him. But Dallas is still in the mix."
~
The Mavericks' chances are helped by the fact that team president Donnie Nelson gave Lin a chance to play and, ultimately, showcase his skills. But Montgomery said contract terms and playing opportunity will be the overriding factors.
~
The Lakers are thin at guard behind Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant. Scouts considered Lin, 21, to be a 'tweener point guard/shooting guard, which helps explain why he didn't get drafted. But now Lin seems to be a hot commodity after shooting 66 percent from three-point range in Las Vegas.

I certainly understand where you're coming from, Yellow, but this is a different and unique situation. Caracter, Ebanks and Lin are rookies, but their potential, upside and skillsets are exactly what this Laker bench and team needs. They meet felt needs of our team and their youth is a plus for us at this stage of championship run. Caracter at age 22 is older than our 5 year veteran Center, Andrew Bynum who is the same age as Jeremy Lin, 21. Ebanks is the youngest at age 19, but is too good to pass up on. Mitch has struck gold, albeit unrefined gold, in this draft by selecting Caracter and Ebanks and negotiating with Lin, who went undrafted. I see nothing wrong with keeping all three if they do well in training camp as they did in SL.

Josh Powell, DJ Mbenga and Shannon Brown are all nice guys, but they've pretty much reached their ceilings(Brown may be the exception and he's still young, but he still hasn't agreed to a contract and that delay could leave him out in the cold). Luke Walton is injury riddled and hasn't given us much in two years and Sasha has been way more cold than hot. Caracter, Ebanks and Lin all bring youth, skill and athleticism to our bench and are nowhere near maxing out their potential. Lin would possibly bring an element that Fish doesn't have, Blake may do a little more of and Jordan, Shannon and Sasha did not do enough of, attacking the basket relentlessly. There was nothing more frustrating for me to watch than our guards falling in love with the jump shot or three point shot, especially when it seemed that both Jordan and Shannon had it in them to go to the basket more. Besides this, Lin seems to also have the instincts to penetrate and dish it to others for easy baskets, something the others have a hard time doing. Blake may also be better for us this year in those categories as well, which is why he's such a good pickup.

I've already raved about Caracter and Ebanks, so I don't need to rehash my statements. It's finally nice to have Mitch and company actually draft prospects that can contribute right away and possibly be great for us for a long time. When was the last time that has happened for us in the draft? Bynum has done well, but injuries have slowed him, much worse on that front for Walton and many, if not all of us thought Farmar would be our PG of the future, but he's taken his talents and attitude with him to Jersey and finally Sasha has issues with his attitude and confidence. I can't even remember the name of the guy we drafted last year and we also passed on DeJuan Blair.

This infusion of young blood and fresh faces will make us a stronger team now and more so in the future. Go Lakers!!!

LakerTom - I really hope you're wrong about UPS already hitting the ceiling. I'm hoping his hand injury this past season was the problem, and that healthy he'll be smokin! I realize that shooting wasn't his only problem and maybe I'm in wishful thinking mode, but hopefully not.

GUARD JEREMY LIN belongs in LA, Pau drawing the latino community and Lin will bring in the large asian fans.

PSYCHO DRAMA QUEEN

Sign Shaq, Shannon and the three rooks (Caracter, Ebanks and Lin).

Shaq...please come home. All wells that ends well. Or as the 3 stooges episode said, "oils wells that ends well.

Shannon over TMac cause he knows the triangle and we still need one player with that "wow" factor.

I love Caracter's offense, but I'm concerned about his lack of height for post defense...and is it me or does he seem to have a hard time holding on to rebounds in traffic?

Ebanks...showed a good all around game, but I was expecting more athleticism when I heard all of the Ariza comparisons. I saw some good plays but nothing high wire like Trevor.

Only saw Lin on the highlights, but he looked fearless going to the hoop. Hopefully Mitch can convince Buss to "splurge" for a 14th player.

lakertom

i'm all for developing young talent but outside of our starting 5 so far we have blake odom sasha luke... thats one inconsistent PF, an erratic sg whos been slumping for last 2 years and LUKE! not to mention injury risk of bynum.. so no i wouldnt say we have a solid or reliable 8 or 9.

Lol Mamba24 - thanks for having my back!

Cmon 2phatt... seriously.

What is wrong with some of you? Sign Snaq??? SNAQ??? Seriously???

Have you forgotten his lazy attitude? His cancerous ways? And you want to bring that into a locker room that hums like a well-oiled machine?

powell mbenga shannon may have limitations but they know the triangle and are ready to contribute NOW if needed. and yes they are backups who wont play much and thats why they're all minimum salaried players...

asides from that those 3 are not even my picks. if i had my choice i go with kurt thomas and a defensive minded shooting guard... not many out there asides from shannon and i do like the prospects of shannon playing alongside blake.

Two questions for LakerTom:

1. Are u a relative of Jeremy Lin? Well, u're both from the Bay area.

2. Is this the beginning of Jeremy Lin as PG Starter campaign?

Question for Mark Medina:

Are u pulling the hair of a Laker girl?

Lakertom

not to mention we also have a rapidly aging dfish, the perennial regular season BUST who will have his share of struggles during the regular season

MM

laker girl hiring criteria should go in this order:

1. looks
2. physique
3. and lastly, dancing abilities

Here's a video of Skip Bayless calling LeBron a "Robin in search of a bat Man." This is also the video where the SI guy predicts that the Heat will storm through the regular season, but believes a healthy Andrew Bynum might be too much for Miami in the end.

I concur kinda, though I really believe that Boston will come from the East again.

Wes

Dear Laker Fans,

I have recently been hired by the Lakers organization to strategize a makeover in the judging process for the 2010-2011 Laker Girls. It has come to management's attention that the quality of Laker Girls has diminished since the 1980's. Our research team has concluded that the average cheerleader of the new millennium has more options than back in the 80's (web cam hosts, music video extras, nannies for the rich, reality show stars, etc.), and as a result, new incentives have been implemented to attract top quality free agents in the dancing field. Some of these incentives include higher salaries, bonuses for playoff wins, and an all expense paid night out with the legendary lady's man, Sasha Vujacic. Qualifications have also been reduced to only include leg length, facial attractiveness, and cup size. If there is a tie, than the final deciding factor will be dancing ability. Insignificant qualifications that are related to personality and intelligence have been eliminated altogether for your benefit. I sincerely hope that Laker Nation appreciates the efforts of the front office to provide the fans with the best quality product available.

Sincerely,

Quality Control

Two questions for LakerTom:

1. Are u a relative of Jeremy Lin? Well, u're both from the Bay area.

Posted by: Edwin Gueco

RESPONSE:

This is called racial profiling.. just because they both are from bay area..shame on you ..

After counting up the cost on Shannon Brown .... it appears to be more advantageous for the Lakers to let him walk and get his 3.5 mil/per somewhere else. Lin would be an absolute steal at 500 k and w/ an Ivy League background could probably pick up the triangle in no time. The 1.7 left from the MLE should go towards a 1 yr trial deal for TMAC. Once TMac becomes the sixth man of the year, he can assume the 5 mill per Sasha has grossly overpaid the last 3 seasons. Shaq can either get a two yr 8 mill deal from a bottom feeder trying to sell tickets or he can take the vet min from the Lakers and end up in the conversation w/ Kareem. Shannon and Trevor will regret listing to their agents trying to play hardball with Buss. The Lakers will save 3 mill per on LIN vs Shannon for a player who is younger and probably more skilled than Shannon. Boston is also making a run for the MAC......TMAC has made 50mill the last two years .... He has the potential to be the 2010 Bob' McAdoo

Yellofever,

In the criteria you mentioned are u sure we don't see them on "N" bars or has been a GF of Tiger Woods? Why don't they introduce the Laker boys too? There are also season ticket holders from West Hollywood.

Psycho Drama Queen,

Too sensitive to jump on racial. You don't know much about LT as we do here, we run some private jokes that only ot's could understand. I mentioned the place because LT is an avid advocate of Jeremy Lin in the last two days.

I've noticed over the past several days that a few people have thought keeping Powell might be a good idea. I don't think these people realize how bad Powell is.

At the beginning of this off-season, the Lakers had the unique opportunity to significantly improve a back-to-back defending championship team by getting rid of some of their least producing and overpaid players (Powell, Morrison, Mbenga, Farmar and yes, Fisher) while not having to worry about retaining the services of their 5 most productive players (Gasol, Odom, Kobe, Bynum, Artest). If the MLE and veteran minimums were spent wisely, the 2010-2011 Lakers could be better than the previous 2 iterations. I do believe that MLE has been spent wisely. But now they have to use the vet minimums (and remaining MLE) wisely.

Now, they already overpaid for Fisher, but at least he's not as overpaid as before. Morrison is gone for sure. Farmar is gone. That leaves decisions on Mbenga and Powell.

Powell, even at the veteran's minimum, is overpaid. Frankly, he doesn't do anything well except give Kobe bear hugs and work really hard. Now, it's not that these are bad things, but you don't need to be shelling out $1 mil+ per year to a guy to do that. I like Powell as a guy, but as a player? Ugh. Please name me one thing he does well. Many believe he's a decent shooter and a good rebounder, but frankly, he's neither of these things. I truly believe Caracter, at this point in his career, is ALREADY a better player than Powell ever was. It's much more prudent to give $400k to Caracter than it is to give $1.2 million to Powell. Therefore, I think Powell is gone. You don't keep a guy around just because he's nice.

Mbenga is a tougher call, although not much so. He may be brought back simply because of the insane market for centers, but there are, frankly, more productive guys out there that could probably be had for the same price (Joey Dorsey, Josh Boone, Earl Barron, Anthony Tolliver, Rasho Nesterovic). Personally, I think Dorsey is HIGHLY underrated and I would love to see him in a Laker uni, but I don't think the Lakers are looking at him. Anyway, I think the Lakers can get an upgrade over Mbenga as well.

So far, I think the Lakers have done well. Signing Steve Blake and letting go of Farmar have been good moves. Replacing Morrison and Powell with Ebanks and Caracter should be next. Resigning Shannon at a reasonable price (3 years / $8.5 mil) would be prudent. And finally, filling that last spot with a serviceable C would be ideal. I don't think the Lakers carry more than 13 players this season. It's not worth a few million bucks to fill the end of the bench.

But under no circumstance should Powell's services be retained. He's just not worth it.

Mamba24 -

The original Dune or course, the remake was just OK...

Naaa. No one woud need that advice, because no one would treat their fans like that.

Those fans LOVED LeBron, and he not only left them, but the way he so easily turned his back on them is quite unsettleing even for a non Cleveland fan like myself.

Always, my sister!

EDWIN... “Two questions for LakerTom:
~
1. “Are u a relative of Jeremy Lin? Well, u're both from the Bay area.” LOL, Edwin.
Yes, he is my cousin and has promised me season tickets if the Lakers sign him. All Asians are my cousins.
~
2. “Is this the beginning of Jeremy Lin as PG Starter campaign?”
Yes, he should start right away, but only because he is Asian, not because of any skills he has.
~
And if you believe that, you probably also believe that the only reason I support Luke Walton is because he is white and I am half-white. Of course, just by asking the questions, you know that there will be a bunch of lazy bloggers who from this moment on think that the above answers were serious and that I actually googled looking for Asian basketball prospects. You know, just like my two favorite Lakers – Kobe and Drew. Come on, Edwin, you know those kind of comments always lead to misunderstanding and misrepresentations even when they are in jest between a couple of old friends. There will always be some who think you were serious.

Agreed..... Powell, DJ, Shannon and Adam are all cool guys who have benefited from being a part of a Championship atmosphere......However, 10mill is a bit much to pay for a dunker and three practice bodies.....Lin, Character, Ebanks can be signed for around 1.5 million, Tmac for 1.7 million, Kurt Thomas-Theo Ratliff-Amundson-Shaq for 1.4 million....so for less than 5 mill you could sign.......

Lin, Tmac, Character, Ebanks, Theo Ratliff = Adam Morrison's Salary Last season ......

Yellowfever,

Nice post, good points. I just have a feeling that Caracter, Ebanks and Lin will produce and catch on quicker than we think. I could be wrong, but I hope not. Nothing against the more experienced players in Powell, Mbenga, Brown or Kurt Thomas, it's just those guys have pretty much settled into a role and rarely produced off the bench for us, even in limited minutes(Mbenga did well at times and Brown did too), but the young guys may give us more because they're constantly looking to improve, grow and fight for more playing time to help the team win. That's the difference I'm looking for coming off our bench. Sure, they'll make mistakes, but they'll always feel like they need to get better and have something to prove. I just don't think the other guys were capable of doing that anymore. It isn't a knock against our former backups, it's just the facts.

I can easily see Ebanks becoming that defensive minded shooter that you eluded to, if we don't pick up another veteran that fits the bill. Of course it's risky, but if these young guys practice hard, hopefully PJ will give them a chance during the season to contribute. Our bench has been putrid offensively the past two seasons and so a change in personnel would be great.

Let Jeremy Lin get signed before anybody anoints him the next great Lakers point guard.

I'm voting NO, HELL NO to Shaq. We have enough Drama; we have the Original Drama Queen, Psycho Drama Queen and you want to add "The Big BACKSTABBER Drama Queen".

LAKER GIRL JUDGING PANEL- I like take that, can a brother get a hook up...how can I be a JUDGE.

I like Jerem Lyn from what I have seen on videos and articles I have read about him...

I think with tutelage form Kobe, Fish and Blake, he can really be a top notch point guard...

I like the math 'enjoy the game' posted...Any one we sign now will pretty much be riding the bench anyway...

With young talent like Caracter, Ebanks and Lyn, we can groom and mold players for our future, instead of being in our present situation, where we have to buy talent...

Oh and last note...Lyn being Asian is just an added bonus...

Shaq will open his big mouth and say THIS TEAM IS Bynum/Gasol/Shaq DOMINANT BIG MAN SHOW. How's that for chemistry! Kobe will be pissed! Ron Artest will be the matured one in this team? Oh no! Just like it's 2004 all over again! NO WAY FOR SHAQ TO DESTROY THIS!!! No way to SHAQ!

Shaq will always open his big mouth, he needs/longs for attention so much.

With all due respect, HTJ, nobody has said anything other than this guy would be a perfect addition at the END of the Lakers bench. I don’t mean to pick on you but why is it that every time somebody brings up a prospect, there has to be naysayer who somehow demands that we NOT anoint that player as the next greatest thing. Show me where anybody said anything like that. These types of comments drive me crazy. Yeah, let’s keep the three stooges who never played at all – Mbenga, Morrison, and Powell – instead of 3 rookies who have promise and whose skills fit the team’s needs perfectly. That makes absolutely zero sense unless we’re the Clippers.

Jeremy Lin? Really? I mean, I know the kid is a feel good story but one 4th quarter outburst vs. John Wall doesn't make him ready to play in the NBA. Sounds like Sun Yue part II.

GO LAKERS!!!

LakerTom,

Well, that's true in this day and age, you can't touch race, gender and place immediately someone will jump on you because it was written and there were no facial expression and body language seen in asking those questions. I don't know whether this blogger is aware that I also came from Asia and how I have been pushing for Lakers to get some international players coming from that side of the world. I know for a fact that they also run professional basketball in many countries. So far only Yao and Yi got to NBA, they missed the best shooter in the sixties by the name Shing Dong Pa of South Korea or the Philippine collegiate sensation in the 70's, Lim Eng Beng.

With regards to Luke Walton, if you criticize the guy ithas nothing to do with the race because I'm an avid fan of his dad, Bill. It is the players ability.

Oh by the way, since we are in this topic of racial. Here is a fact: when you analyze the people sitting on lower seats and court side at the Staples, you will see a bunch of white dudes there. I found this out from my son who attended Game 6 of the Finals. One time I also sat in a lower seat when Kobe torched the Mavericks for 62 pts in three quarters in '06. However, on the parade route along Figueroa for the two consecutive Championships which I attended and mingled with the crowd, there are a lot blacks, latinos and asians who admittedly said that they have never watch a regular game at the Staples. Well, I am not being racist but just pointing out obvious facts and observations. If you are in the Lakers Front Office engaged in marketing tickets and Lakers, that's the profile of your fan base on those who can afford to come to Staples and those who rely on local TV and cables.

I disagree ....This is not 2004 and Shaq could make up for all the things you guys mentioned by playing his role and wining his last two rings......Phil Kobe and Shaq all had a part to play in the 04 Laker drama
Shaq could be a great option at his current market value

@ Mamba24 - LMAO

@ puddle - Not even close...Sun Yue did not have Lyn's dribble drive penetration, ball handling skills, court awareness, great passing and hustle energy...

Yue was born in China, while Lyn is born in California...

Shaq was a great a Laker, he should retire a great Laker, he had a chance to retire a Laker and he blew it (insert Robert DeNiro in Copland here). I hope Shaq's jersey hangs from the rafters next to Kobe's (maybe hanging just a titch lower), but he has no place on this current team.

We're not looking for that savy vet to put us over the top, we're looking for instant energy, impact, rebounding and defense. For, like, 7 minutes a game. Shaq won't come back to LA for that, he's too proud. Plus, only 1.7 is a pretty low figure for Shaq to allow himself to be valued at. I feel the same about McGrady. It's all well and good to say you'll play for whatever, but when "whatever" in your mind is 5 million/season and "whatever" in Mitch's mind is 1.7 mil, that's a substantial blow to an ego used to seeing quite a few more zeroes on the old pay check.

The last few spots are going to be cheap, cheap players. Someone floated Nestorovic as a back-up 5, I kind of like that but he's as injury prone as Bynum. Also, never known for his rebounding, more of an outside the paint center and we need bruisers.

Lin sounds intriguing, I like the idea of trying to develop a guy or two on this winning ship we're sailing on as oppossed to having to start from scratch in a couple of years. From this perspective I say bring in the youngins now because after Phil's swan song, barring a statistical re-birth from Fish, this will be his last season starting. Gotta bring in a young PG to try and mold for the future or it'll be Smush 2.0.

I don't want Shaq, not because of the drama he'd cause (which he would) or because I hate him for trashing the Lakers on the way out (which I don't), but because he's just not that good. He's a huge liability on defense and demands that the offense run through him, even though he's not good enough to demand that anymore. The Big Ego could never subject himself to a backup role behind the kid who replaced him anyway, so it's a moot point.

Spices that you can't resist.

LEWSTERS... With all the talk about Sci-Fi movies, I wonder how many young kids today would read DUNE or see the parallels between the current religious juggernaut confronting most Western societies today in the form of Islamic radicalism. Soon, every advanced country in the world is going to be sprinkled with muslin enclaves that eventually could turn into our local versions of Iraq and Afghanistan with policy SWAT teams replacing American GI’s and guerilla tactics, IEDs, and suicide bombers replacing Martin Luther King strategies.

Of all the girls auditioning for the Laker Girls, why did you pick a picture of this one to post...

Did you have Sushi last night for dinner...lol

I like the ideal in bring in the three rooks, signing T-Mac or resigning Brown. But we've been down this road, if you truly think Sasha is going to get it together just because it's his contract year. It AIN"T going to happen, trading him before the trade deadline is the best case. someone would love his expiring contract, I myself want T-Mac.

2Phatt,

"I'm voting NO, HELL NO to Shaq."

Let me see if I can help you change your mind...

1. We need a backup center who can score. Who out there is better than Shaq?

2. I RAILED against hiring Thriller. Railed against it! I screamed he was a cancer. I was wrong. When I last checked we're in the Ring-Acquiring Business. Sometimes that means forgive and forget. Did Shaq act like a complete idiot in the past? Of course. Still, when I last checked the Celtics and Heat were out there.

3. Shaq is obsessed with his legacy. He wants five rings because five rings puts him historically in a completely different category than other "Greats." This is his last, best opportunity to get that fifth ring and by doing so get Kobe his sixth ring, tying him with Jordan. Champioships make everything better. I think Shaq can behave himself.

4. Shaq could literally mentor Bynum into being a tougher, stronger player. When Bynum was drafted, were like, "We've got a replacement for Shaq!" Well, why not have them practice together?

5. L.A. loves a good redemption story.

6. Shaq and Kobe played great together in last year's All-Star game. Remember that?

7. If Shaq could come here and accept that this is Kobe's team, it would FINALLY lay to rest all the negativity from our last Threepeat Dynasty. Wouldn't it be good to let go of all that negativity?

Think about it.

LakerTom-
Point taken. I say if the Lakers management deems him worth a camp invite, I'll be more than pleasantly surprised if he can earn himself a contract.

As for the three stooges at the end of the bench, WTF ever said anything about wanting to keep them? I'd even be in favor of shipping out some more dead weight slightly further up the depth chart, but good luck finding takers for the lousy deals of Vujacic and Walton. With the lockout looming, Vujacic's expiring deal isn't even all that appealing for teams looking to shed salary. Typical Sasha, even when his clunker contract is expiring, it's not as valuable as under normal circumstances.

That's a little harsh to call them "The Three Stooges" I like all three players. I just think we need to inject some youth into the far side of the bench.

I didn't see anything in Sun Yue that I see in Jeremy Lin. I don't think its fair to compare those two players simply because they are both Asian. Anyhow Sun Yue was Chinese and Jeremy Lin is American. To me that's more important than race.

ROFLMAO!!!!!! I will repeat this one more time HELL NO! I'm not saying NO to Shaq. That @@#$%%^^ is 320 pounds 7'2. Now you can walk up to him and say Hey Shaq you walking testament to childhood obesity I say NO, to you. And do you know what happens after that? On your Tombstone It will say; HE DIED FOR JUST SAYING NO!

Sun Yue looked like garbage still in this years summer league. He even got "traded" from Washington to Milwaukee because he wasn't going to get any PT behind John Wall. He still looked like garbage.

He's closer to the Chinese Jordan Farmar than Magic Johnson. In fact, his name and Magic's should never be uttered in the same sentence.

I think htj had a reasonable post about Jeremy Lin.

"I say if the Lakers management deems him worth a camp invite, I'll be more than pleasantly surprised if he can earn himself a contract."

I'd agree with this. I just don't expect it to happen.

And by the way, it's spelled Lin, not Lyn. His own website says as much...

Why, in SoCal, where else. BTW, the site of the wedding, Pelican Hill, is little more than a mile away from Kobe's house in Newport Coast. Pierce gets a ring this year, after all.

FYI, They actually played during the Orlando - Lakers match. Game 3.

For what it's worth, and that's not much, I thought that all of them
could have benefited from more playing time. In particular, Powell & Mbebga
have done "ok" whenever they've been called upon. In my opinion.
