Lakers Summer League Chat

Guys, It appears Scribble It Live has changed its platform. So we may have to change to yet another chat interface in the future. But for now, we're going to kick it old school style and have today's chat on the comments thread.

With instant posting, feel free to talk all things Lakers, including tonight's summer league game against the Knicks and the team's free agency plans. I'm out on assignment so I won't be able to join the chat, but I'll make sure to read through the comments later on.

Well that kinda sucks....

Scribble It was so easy.

What is Caracter's current weight. Does he look to heavy, or does he need to muscle up

JUSTA - I agree,,, bummer. Nice try MM.

JUSTA - I agree,,, bummer. Nice try MM.

YIKES!!! The dreaded DOUBLE POST!!!!

Tony,

Caracter has actually lost over 30lbs since the NCAA tournement and is down t0 270 after being as heavy as 320. He looks svelte, quick and stronger to me, but he still needs to hit the weights.

Sup Fam,

How's our guys looking so far?

Open letter to Mitch Kupchak:

On behalf of Lakers Nation...PLEASE...find a way to bring Shannon Brown back to the Purple & Gold.

Back when Julius Erving was in his prime, the "Dr. J Rules" (which came out way before the Jordan Rules) was that the opposing team was forced to call timeout if Dr. J dunked 2x in a row, because those dunks would FIRE-UP the frenzied crowd and create an absolute tsunami of momentum that would sweep the Sixers onto victory.

Shannon is obviously not Julius Erving. But, what he brings to the table is the same sort of EXCITING sky-walking athleticism that can electrify the Staples Center crowd, and more importantly, put that "Dr. J" kind of momentum-building or momentum-shifting charge into his own team!

How valuable is that? Have we not seen how the cumulative effect of adding together, seemingly small momentum-building plays, ultimately leads to winning the biggest games?

Yes, the NBA is a business, but it is also athletic entertainment at the highest level. Dr. Buss knows this well. He has been in the vanguard of the merge/meld between sports and entertainment for as long as he has owned the Lakers.

Shannon was injured and not at his best towards the end of last season. He deserves a chance to show how much his game has grown, and how good he really can be with more time on the court, in the absence of Farmar.

Don't forget, it TAKES TIME for a new player to assimilate into The Triangle offense. The Lakers and Brown have already invested several years of time and teaching together. Any newcomer will have to go through their own learning curve.

This is another reason to NOT give up on Shannon!

Picture Shannon streaking down the sideline, receiving a perfect lob pass from Steve Blake, and throwing it down over the head of some quivering Celtic. Imagine how that would fire-up the Staples crowd and his teammates.

Actually, we don't have to. He has already done such high-flying things numerous times. We NEED his youth and athleticism as the rest of the squad gets older. Please give him a chance to show what else he can do.

PLEASE bring back Shannon Brown.

sup lakermike, MRS lakermike, nemaia, reign.....

Hey Justa, Reign, LakerMike and the rest...How's are young guys looking so far?

Scribble It was so much better... I'm usually all a fan of being Old School but not here. Caracter looks really good so far. Hit a couple of jumpers and already has a block on Cousins. should be a very good match up to really see what Caracter has.

Shannon played very well as a starter and had some all around good games, he could have stayed!, his choice. Looks like Bell is first option, his 3point shooting can be truly awesome.

We will see, sometimes ego gets you after a ring. Hope that is not the case with Shannon, he seems like a great kid

Is there a link to watch the game for free?

Scanning some of the earlier comments today, this one made me laugh...

"I'll take T-Mac - if he includes a time machine.

Posted by: htj | July 13, 2010 at 02:16 PM "

I know everyone is clamoring for T-Mac, but he's a ball dominating guard who just doesn't have it anymore. Do you really want THIS guy?...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKggO62YPs4

When you hit "post" and you don't see your comment post, just wait about 15 seconds - it will post eventually and you'll avoid the dreaded double post!

Justa... go to espn3.com... they have all the summer league games.. it's where i'm watching it right now.

Caracter just blocked the SH** out of this dude!!!

THANKS DAN!!!!!

sup Fam!

My pleasure :)

I must be really spoiled - cuz I'm thinking this old school crap sucks when a game's on! LOL!!!

For anyone who hasn't seen the rookie rankings yet: http://www.nba.com/rookieladder/

DeMarcus Cousins is going to be having nightmares tonight...Caracter is everywhere

Caracter is 6'9 at 270 lbs. Any of you guys remember Karl Malone also playing at around that weight? I'd think that with proper conditioning (muscle and strength build-up and fat reduction), Caracter may really turn out to be the steal of the 2nd round. The rich get richer. :)

GO LAKERS!!

Bron-Bron, you out there? Heard u left Cleveland. Any chance I could take care o' ur Crib? I promise to take good care of Moms. Plz

Sup All. Games gonna be replayed tonight on NBA TV at 10 PM.

GO LAKERS!!!!!! ONE, TWO, THREE- PEAT SQUARED!!!!!!

marc b - it's on for free at espn3.com right now...

Just watched the last 10 min of this game and Cousins is really pressing against Caracter. He's guaranteed to shoot it every time he touches it, and isn't hitting at a high rate (4/11 right now). If you didn't know better, you'd think these two weren't drafted all that far apart.

lol DeLonte...

Justa.. no doubt about it.. this is nowhere near as convenient as new school methods. my fingers are getting worn out having to continually scroll down to the comment box lol.

Nice jumper by Ebanks though.. Good to see him in better form than yesterday

Strawberry is looking REALLY good so far this game!

@ Half
Cousins: 5-12 12 pts.
Caracter: 4-5 10 pts

Dan - my scroll wheel is wearing down to the size of a cheerio....

Unfortunately, my ISP doesn't carry espn3.com. Rats!!!!!

Catch u all later. Can't wait 4 MM to solve this Chat issue...

BTW--DeMarcus Kissin' Cousins is gonna get Biatch Slapped by Drew From LA Back to Sac in the Regular Season!!!

GO LAKERS!!!!!! ONE, TWO, THREE-PEAT SQUARED!!!!!!

I've been hearing mostly good reports about both Ebanks and Caracter...looks like Mitch may have gotten a couple of steals in this draft.

Not only does Ebanks game resemble Ariza but, so does his face a little. :)

Yes...looks like the Lakers have flat out STOLEN a couple of ballers in the 2nd round, in Ebanks and Caracter. Haha

And to think, not that long ago 'some' peeps were calling Mitch "Kupcake." I got your "Kupcake" right here.

Sure, Mitch made some early mistakes, no one's perfect. The key is, he has (obviously) learned from them, and has been steadily improving ever since.

Most importantly, Mitch Kupchak learned his craft at the feet of The Master. The Logo. The greatest GM in NBA history: Jerry West.

Now, if only he would remind himself WHY he wanted Brown in the first place, and bring Shannon back to the Laker Show.

P & G R

@Marc B (With a 'C'),

I'm lookin' forward to seein' Drew against Cousins after his disrespectful comments about Drew.

gdub - you're hearing right - they're ranked #1 & #2 in the summer league. - go figure!! Looking pretty good on the court too - you watching?

Yeah Justa, I'm watchin' thanks to Dan_NBAexpert.

Any news on whether Raja is gonna join the team? I read he and the Black Mamba are supposed to meet.

gdub - yeah tomorrow... I hated the guy for his clotheslining of Kobe and for his smarmy attitude, but hey - if Kobe wants him now, then I want him too!

Puddle, you didn't read the article. When Tmac first went to rehab, he could NOT dunk off his left leg. That's apparent in the vid you posted.

4 months later after microfracture surgery, we was dunking again off the left leg. Several months after that and we're in the present moment. The trainer says he has pretty much everything back.

So, video is old Mac... opportunity to get Tmac with his time machine.

Whassup with all this fuss about T-Mac?

Fortunately no one actually a part of the Laker organization is infected with that madness.

No update on Raja other than he and Kobe are supposed to be meeting & have a little sit down tomorrow, Wednesday. I haven't heard anything about Lakers front office and Raja yet. I would be happy w/ Raja, but I'd be ecstatic if Tracy McGrady was picked up. McGrady could def play back up minutes and IF, which is a big if, he stays healthy, having a guy with his offensive skill set off the bench would be unbelieveable.

Yeah Justa, me too but, I think he'd be a good addition to the team coz of his D and long range shooting touch. Like you said, if Mamba's ok wiht him on the team, then that's enuff for me.

I'm not that high on T-Mac but, if he'd be willing to come for REAL cheap I wouldn't have a problem with it.

McAdoo & Kupchak on the sidelines chit-chatting.... What's Bob up to these days?

I watched Strawberry when he was at UM and he usually plays with a lotta energy and plays pretty good D.

Ebanks with the miracle shot lol!

gdub - yeah I've been impressed with him tonight.

Wow - so many turnovers - but it's easing the bball jonesing...lol!

McAdoo's probably scouting for Riles. Isn't he still on the Heat staff?

Andrew Bynum, Ebanks, Caracter are all JIM BUSS picks.

Sunyue, Sasha, Luke are Mitch's.

staples - really?? Wow.... I'm impressed!!

Let's see if LA can win a summer league game....

@Staples,

If that's true then I guess JB deserves the credit instead of Mitch.(LOL)

Gerald Green is killing us.. awful passer

Gerald's been strugglin' so far in this Summer League.

aarrrghhhhh - this sucks

Anyone else getting a "typepad" error???

Anyone see that Zydrunas Illgauskas (spell?) is also following LeBron to Miami

I don't know about the last 2 prospects. The mention of Bell still leaves a sour taste in my mouth regarding the WWF style clothelines on Kobe. Tmac was still servicable a few years ago, now I'm not too sure. I just hope if signed he doesn't perform a " I hope to help the Lakers to Back to Back to... ouch, ouch my BACK..." and join Luke on the bench.

None of the guards on this summer league team know how to run an offense, they take wild shots, go one on three on fast breaks and don't give it to our bigs. Caracter was 4 of 4 from the field in the first half and barely touched the ball in the second half with only 3 attempts. Some of it was his fault, but the guards were just gunning and playing sloppy again. We play close for a while and then end up losing big.

Dan - now come on. This was expected. You know that the princess was taking ALL of her lap dogs with her to Miami.

Arghhhh, I lost the video stream but, still have the audio, WTF??!

Cousins was horrible from the field, but at least had his mates passing him the ball in the post. I don't understand why Person went away from what has been working the first three games when they went into the post to Caracter. Cousins played well, but Caracter wasn't given much of a chance not being involved at all offensively from the second quarter on. Ebanks played alright tonight, but missed a couple of easy layups.

Gerald Green with the HUGE slamma jamma!!

Strawberry played alright, but he, Robinson, Brown and especially Green are sloppy, wild and can't make jump shots. Sims played a good game inside, but most of his stuff came off putbacks off of missed outside shots by our jumper happy guards.

Staples24 --

Feeling guilty? Were you one of those calling him "Kupcake?"

Who is the "official" GM of the Lakers? And, who is Jim Buss in the Lakers organization?

To paraphrase the old axiom: IF you have 2 General Managers, you have NO General Manager.

In the Lakers organization, there IS consultation and collaboration in player/personnel matters, but at the end of the day, it is the GM who takes ultimate responsibility.

MITCH KUPCHAK is the Lakers' General Manager.

P & G R

Nemaia,

C'mon, now you know those guards have to get their shots in.(LOL)

I don't care if this IS summer league. I HATE hearing the Lakers lost.

Caracter still needs to stop with the silly fouls though and demand the ball in the post. I thought he matched up pretty evenly with Cousins and I would've liked to have seen him get the ball more in the post. 4 of 7 is not enough for your best player on the team and on the floor. I understand other guys are trying to make the team as well, but gunning and poor passing won't get it done.

LTLF,

" Kobe, Pau, Lamar, Drew, Fish, Artest, Blake. That's 7 players. Most teams go with an 8 or 9 player main rotation. If Luke's healthy, that's probably 8 (or maybe Ebanks is 8 if Luke's not healthy). If they get Bell, that's probably 9. So anyone beyond that will probably see the floor about as much as MBenga did last season."

I agree we probaly have the best 7 man rotation. I would not take the IFS though, I WANT A 10 DEEP roster. Injuries are the hardest to overcome when defending a chmapionship. Lakers need to be able to cushion a 1 man down easily to defend its title properly.

I would not consider Luke to be part of 10 deep right now. Sasha maybe in borderline, I would put him at 11, rookies at 12 and 13.

GDUB,

I know huh? LOL. They drive me crazy though. I mean, these guards seem to not have a clue about running a team. How hard is it to make good passes into the post without having it tipped or stolen? I could do that in my sleep.

Marc Gasol was also a steal of the draft... which one made that one?

So Lakers should still be looking for 8, 9 and 10.

8 Bell combo SG defend and shoot
9 Poasey/Ariza like dfend and shoot
10 Kurt Thomas/PJ Brown like at C, reliable tough

Even if they do not see much action, you know they are there. Like Nate Robinson and Wallace did for the C's in the Finals.

Nemaia - agreed - it seemed like they were all out to get theirs.... and that ain't gonna cut the mustard.

That is why I am impressed with Kobe recruiting Bell and Thomas, the type of guys that will not back down in the Finals.

We need this type of guys. Especially when Odom and Gasol goes soft. 8, 9 and 10 should be all about toughness and dfense.

Lakers already has offensive fire power especially with the addition of Blake.

If Cavs will have a fire sale, Sasha's contract could be an exchange for a Varegao, Hickson, Leon Powe maybe!

Cavs would help the Lakers beat the LBERONS in Miami. GILBERT SAID, he will personally guarantee Lebron won't win a ring until they do. Which means he will do anything!

There is so much to be had from Cleveland leftovers. TAKE YOUR PICK.

JUST DON"T TELL BOSTON, CHICAGO AND MAGIC I said so. But I am sure GILBERT WOULD WANT TO SEND THOSE IN THE WEST CONTENDERS not East.

Now comes the two rookies coming down to earth.

No offense from what has been seen so far they have lots of potential. Probably will be kept on the team as one reason they are only issued a check for $400,000 per season. However it shows as good as they can be they do have their limitations and while their production has been good the past few games it hasn't really translated in all around team success.

Ebanks and Caracter will hopefully develop into good future starters in the NBA just for now enjoy what they do in the Summer League as a way to kill time. Most likely barring injuries they will be warming up the bench next season.

Lakers already have an insider in BYRON SCOTT (Cavs new coach).

@Staples -

Is this true or just a rumor...if so, got the link for the article?

Justa,

Whether it's a pickup game at a park, gym, backyard or summer league or the the pros, it drives me absolutely nuts to see guys play wild, sloppy basketball. The biggest reason for all four losses is because players, especially the guards start shooting ill-advised jumpers and make wild drives to the basket. Notice when they play team ball and move the ball inside out, they were either leading in the game or stayed close. Caracter to me is the best player on the team and a force down low, and yet these guys think they're Kobe for some reason. Ebanks is the second best player and seems to be the only one that tries to get the ball into Caracter. Gerald Green had Caracter wide open in the paint several times, looked at him and then hoisted a stupid shot. This scenario is totally different from our Big Boy team in which Kobe can hit any shot despite having two efficient bigs inside. The guards on the JV team can't hit a jumper to save their lives! If I were the coach, I would pull these guards out and tell them to run the offense through their best player in the post and get better shots or else take a seat.

Staples 24,

Where did you read that Kobe is recruiting Thomas? Do you mean Kurt Thomas? Wow, that would be another smart move by us if we pick him up to back up Bynum.

Are all these summer league commentators anti-Laker? They were just gushing and creaming in their pants about DeMarcus Cousins and Sacramento and every other team other than the Lakers. I mean, I understand all the hype surrounding these top picks, but other players have done just as well if not better.

KB Blitz,

Well said. Our young guys will learn a lot from our stars and veterans and become good players in this league. Thanks again for earlier post regarding Bell. Hey, I may have missed it, but where do you stand with all the talk regarding TMac or Bell? TMac and Bell together? A lot of good posts on that all throughout the day.

8, 9 and 10 can all come from the CAVS. GILEBRT and JERRY BUSS can make a pact the LEBRONS IN MIAMI will never see the NBA trophy.

Sasha, Luke, Ebanks, Caracter and (2) 1st rd draft picks for Varegao, Hickson, Anthony Carter.

@Nemaia,

I wouldn't get too upset with the play of these Summer League guards since it's HIGHLY unlikely any of them will make the team anyway. They're basically showcasing their 'skills' for the rest of the league...and doin' a piss poor job of it at that.(LOL)

JERRY BUSS, did you know D WADE SAID....

Miami is the new Hollywood!!!! DO not let MIAMI WIN! Do everything in your power to bolster the LAKERS BENCH! Odom and Blake and a couple of rookies ar enot enough!

JERRY BUSS, time to go ALL-IN.

Jerry Buss,

Use Dan Gilbert's hatred on LEBRON to beat the LEBRONS' in the New Miamiwood! Even Cleveland fans would welcome Luke Walton just to ensure Lebron does not get a ring.

GDUB,

LOL! Is it just me, or do we have the worst guards in all of the summer league? I mean, even if we had Coby Karl, he would've found a way to get the ball into the post! I though Jabber had a shot at first, but he's fallen on the wayside as well. None of these guards fit our team even though Strawberry and Robinson play good defense at times. They're all worse than Tony Allen from the perimeter which says a lot. I also don't get how these GUARDS miss a lot of free throws a la Jordan Farmar. That's just ridiculous.

Nemaia - I feel you. If this is indeed basketball, it sure isn't doing much for the withdrawal shakes I'm experiencing lol! These guys probably think they ARE Kobe - hell they're wearing a Laker jersey (sort of) right? LOL. Sheesh. I understand the triangle is hard to learn, but it sure looked like they were in Gary "screw the triangle I'm gonna show you my stuff" Payton mode....

Dan the Expert,

What was the final stats for Cousins and Caracter tonight? Thanks.

@Staples,

I feel ya but, where is the money gonna come from for these players you want Dr.B to get?

It's been entertaining and curious to see the back and forth on the Mc Grady vs Bell issue. Strangely, the blog weighs in more on whether or not Mc Grady can cut it in the NBA. I have no doubt that he can and might do so on the Lakers.

But if I'm Mitch and both Raja and Tracy have said, "yes, I'll take 1 smackeroos to come and play for the NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers!" Who do you say yes to? Does Buss green light two? Unless both can be had for somewhere in the range of 2 million combined, I don't see them going as deep into the luxury tax.

It's a strange bear to wrastle is all.

That's 1 million smackeroos...

LOL about the announcers, Nemaia! Last live chat I was getting pissed off about the same thing. Bunch of fricken haters. It's amazing that the summer league brings that out in them. The anti-Laker hatred sure runs deep in these idiots. Oh well - I'm learning to love the hate - it means they're jealous of us cuz they know we're the best!

(Still - I would punch someone in the throat if I could only reach inside the TV...)

The Laker's rookies looked very athletic...I really liked Caracter...I think Artest would be a great influence on him and Kobe could help him with his shot, like he did Ariza...acutually, both should take the Kobe Jump Shot Clinic...

Ebanks not only moves and has the same body like Ariza, but looks like him face wise...Crazy, you can squint your eyes and pretend he is Ariza...lol

I think both rookies can blossom in the Lakers triangle...with the right tutelage and training from the vets and coaching staff...For the money, we can't find any other talent this cheap...

To those who wanted Green...negatory...undisciplined and way too many turnovers...

I was sporting my Kobe jersey (Sunday whites), and some Queen fan started talking smack...saying that the Heat will smoke us and send us back to the Kwame days..."I turned to him and said, "what does your Queens have to forward to...you guys won't even make the playoffs...and the highlight of your season will be, when Bynum smacks Cousins around, for talking sheet...He responded by talking about the Webber, Divac, Peja and White Chocolate days...lol

I told him that Robert Horry said that you must drink Pepsi...and if you guys do really well in the Summer League, you can maybe hang a banner up in Arco Arena...

Oh yeah, not impressed by Cousins at all...

It was nice to get a little BB fix...sorry justa, MM will just have to come through for you...

Bynum,Gasol/Varegao
