Lakers formalize signing of free agent guard Steve Blake

July 8, 2010 | 11:49 am

The Lakers signed free agent guard Steve Blake, the team announced Thursday. Although Blake agreed to terms last week on a four-year, $16-million deal, he couldn't officially sign until the free-agent moratorium ended Wednesday night.

The Times' Mike Bresnahan and Broderick Turner recently reported that the Lakers secured Blake using part of their mid-level exception, and have less than $2 million left on the MLE. The next order of business appears to involve re-signing veteran guard Derek Fisher, who has yet to reach an agreement with the team.

The Lakers expect to formally introduce Blake in a press conference sometime next week. Blake's wife, Kristen, shared on her Twitter account that Steve is currently in Las Vegas because of his involvement with Hoops for St. Jude, which raises money and awareness for children battling cancer. It appears that the Blake family is already making moving arrangements, with Kristen tweeting, "Checkin out houses 2 rent 4 the season next week while we're there for pc ... practice facility is in el segundo so there, manh beach, marina del Rey, etc. Steve's a gym rat so he needs 2 b close 2 the pf!"
