Kupchak 'optimistic' about re-signing Shannon Brown

The Lakers have added veterans Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff this month.

Their next addition might be more familiar to Lakers fans.

General Manager Mitch Kupchak said he was optimistic that the Lakers would re-sign free-agent guard Shannon Brown.

"We’re still talking to Shannon," Kupchak said Friday. "I think there’s a good chance that in the next couple of weeks we can have some resolution with Shannon. I’m optimistic."

 Brown opted out of a contract that would have paid him $2.15 million next season.

Kupchak also said he had initiated talks with the agents for second-round picks Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter, who played well for the Lakers' summer-league team. Neither player has a guaranteed contract as of now.

Earlier Friday, Derek Fisher spoke with media members for the first time since signing a three-year, $10.5-million contract to stay with the Lakers.

Fisher, who turns 36 in a couple of weeks, said he planned to be around for a while.

“I didn’t sign a three-year contract by accident,” Fisher said at his basketball camp, adding that he would “fully expect” to play through 2012-13.

Fisher also didn't seem concerned by the new look of the Miami Heat, even though the Lakers were not favored to win the championship in the eyes of Las Vegas oddsmakers.

“That’s fine," Fisher said. "That doesn’t change [anything] with us.”

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/Miami-Heat-strengths-and-weaknesses-LeBron-Wade-Bosh

snippet:
MIAMI’S WEAKNESSES

• LeBron’s defensive stance is a bit too top-heavy so he can get torched by speedsters. He’s only interested in attempting assist passes.

• Despite his ability to block shots, Bosh is a weakling on defense.

• Miller can’t guard his own shadow.

• Big Z habitually misses shots in the endgame, and gets humiliated on defense when an opponent can turn-face-and-go.

FOX SPORTS POLL

*
What is the Heat's biggest flaw?
o Interior defense
o 3-point shooting
o Point-guard play
o Whatever...this team is unstoppable!

• Anthony can’t score with a pencil and — at an undersized 6-9 — can’t defend without fouling.

• Howard’s poor defense will always be attacked whenever he steps on the court.

• Haslem can be overpowered and worn down when he’s matched up against bigger opponents.

• Jones is another chump on defense.

• Magloire is a terrific fourth-string center.

• Carlos Arroyo holds the ball too much and his defense is terrible. The Heat are still in need of a pass-first point guard who can bury treys. If Wade has to play too much time at the point, he’ll be worn to a frazzle by the All-Star game. Plus, Wade isn’t a terrific facilitator.

• Neither James, nor Wade, nor Chalmers are reliable perimeter shooters.

• Wade and Haslem are the only prime-time defenders on the team.

Miami’s overall defense is full of holes — especially in the middle. Ilgauskas, Magloire and Anthony add up to 21 feet of nothing. If Haslem is forced to play too many minutes at center, he’ll be ground down to guard-size by the playoffs.

Jones and Miller are the only reliable long-distance bombers, but it’s hard to imagine they’ll be on the court together except in dire emergencies. That means opponents will be able to tag one or the other and clog the middle against the penetrations of James and Wade.

The Heat have no post-up scorers and will have to totally depend on Bosh’s fadeaways to put pressure on the other teams’ big men.

If the Lakers sign Shannon Brown, one of the rookies probably won't get
signed.

Now wouldn't that be something?

what? rookies havnt been signed????? wth is going on... i say sign the 2 rookies for Shannons salary...

done deal... mitch get it done!

repost

Question everyone, if this is Phils last grand hurrah, why would we want to tie the bulls mark? shouldn't the aim be on 73 wins minimum? just sayin, just sayin......

@ hobbitmage - ahaha thats really funny man, it truly is " add up to 21 feet of nothing" ahah LMAO good one!

If we re sign Shannon, that tells me that Luke isn't going play this year.

MH

MITCH KUPCHAK YOU MAGNIFICENT GENIUS YOU!!!!!KUDOS!!!!

Shannon Brown is a great piece of the Lakers Championship team. They need his enthusiasm and spark off the bench. They need Brown to throw it down on Bean Town. To finish off runs on the Suns. To slam it commando on Orlando. To put a beat on the Heat.

Without a hitch Mitch, sign Shannon Brown. Keep his flight path and landing pad in LA!

Nem,

That article requires an insider so I cannot post the link I will post about the rookies though:

5. Derrick Caracter, Lakers
Summer-league stats: 15.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 1.4 bpg

Here was my checklist when watching DC this week: Did he rebound ferociously? Did he compete hard on defense? Could he finish shots around the rim? Did his body look ready? Check, check, check and check. The Lakers have to be thrilled they found an NBA player so late in the draft. Now they have to keep him moving in the right direction.

17. Devin Ebanks, Lakers
Summer-league stats: 15.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.4 apg

Ebanks came into the week with something to prove, and he used that edge to separate himself from many of the other second-rounders. I liked how he slashed hard to the rim, but I was more impressed with his perimeter game, which showed signs of progress and included some long-range buckets. It's fair to say he could be a poor man's Trevor Ariza.

Blitz,

You are...OUT FREAKIN STANDING!!! Thanks for posting this great information. I've been propping up these two guys for some time now, especially Caracter because I know what type of player Ebanks can and will be. What are your thoughts? Wow, that's pretty impressive that Thorpe has Caracter at #5 and Ebanks probably should be ranked higher than #17, but that's still great considering where these two were drafted overall. Even though their production is tempered by the fact that it was summer league, they sure turned a lot of heads with their play and got people's attention. They may not get much playing time this season, but it will be nice to see them learn and develop under this veteran roster. Just more reasons to be excited about our Lakers going forward. Thanks again.

~~ REPOST ALERT ~~

--------

GREED IS GOOD... AS LONG AS YOU DON'T LOSE!

The top ten on Lakers roster is solid, if not downright scary. The questionable health of Luke and unknowns of two 2nd rounders as the final three pieces may very well blend in surprise quality and minutes along the way.

But, regarding the preseason 72 win chant (yet again!). Here are three samples to consider.
1. '95-96 Bulls reg season 72 wins AND champions.
2. '07 Patriots reg season undefeated BUT lost Superbowl.
3. '09-10 Lakers overall third seed (behind Clev & Orl) BUT champions.

IF we are going to be greedy and speak openly of a such a thing, let's remember that sample #1 above is euphoric, but sample #2 is devestating. (Those of us who were there in 2000 when our 67 WIN team was on the verge of defeat in WCF Game 7 versus Portland know exactly how dark that emotion can be... WHEW!)

BUT, consider the emotional difference between sample #1 ('95-'95 Bulls) and sample #3 ('09-'10 Lakers). Are we any less euphoric in our Game 7, come-from-behind slaying of the Celtics than those Bulls fans were? I seriously doubt it.

So, before we get greedy and start this 72 win bandwagon, let's consider the REAL POINTS OF GREED...

1. ANOTHER 3-PEAT!!! Our third in history, which NOBODY else can claim. Not the Celtics. Not MJ. NOBODY in ANY TEAM SPORT.

2. ALL TIME GREATEST NBA FRANCHISE!!! Most championships (tied for first, and not for long!). Most finals appearances. Most playoff appearances and wins. Most all-time reg season wins.

3. PERSONAL GREATNESS!!! Kobe joins pantheon of 6+ rings club. Lakers add to stable of players in the GOAT discussion (Mikan, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, and Kobe).

4. THUMPING THE HEAT!!! More regular season wins will not do it. Only a championship for Miami Heat will do. Let them win more regular season games so we can inflict a deeper level of devestation with Finals win over them!

So, let's be greedy. But let's be greedy for what really matters!
Mike

Signing Shannon will not alter whether or not Caracter and Ebanks get signed. Their rookie contracts will not significantly be impacted by the luxury tax.

However, foreign contract $$s are the concern. How much they can draw on the open market in Europe, the Middle East, China and Russia is what I'm worried about.

Do they want to sit on a championship bench (get some limited playing time, but great practice time) or go overseas and play for bigger bucks?

If they go overseas, the Lakers (unless they renounce or trade their rights) will still be able to sign them in the future.

CAVEAT: The New CBA could, depending on the negotiations regarding player rights, alter this analysis.

GO LAKERS!!!!!! ONE, TWO, THREE-PEAT SQUARED!!!!!!

Hobbit,

Nice break down of the Heat. I don't think signing Shannon will affect us bringing the two rookies aboard. We may carry 14 players on the roster this year, or Luke may be put on the IR which would allow us to have both rookies. Mitch seemed to imply this when he stated that he's confident in re-signing Brown and is in contact with the agents of both Caracter and Ebanks. We are seriously stacking the deck in case, God forbid, there's an injury. I'm just excited that Mitch has assembled a deeper, stronger bench.

So, let's be greedy. But let's be greedy for what really matters! Mike Posted by: LakerMike | July 23, 2010 at 12:24 PM

GOD$%^%$#@$^!!! Do I have to say it? OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!!!

Good news, Mitch!
Sign Shannon!!!

We goin party till the early morn.
When The Lakers bring the trophy home.
We got that California purple gold.
And F them Laker Haters cuz we down with the greatest

SB has a lot of potenital and could fill out the second unit nicely. Do it Mitch, you always find a way.

... We're so stacked for next year its not even funny.
our bench by itself is better than half of the league !!!

check out Barne's first interview that was on 540 a.m last night,
HES PUMPED !!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKL2Xk11cFQ

Great news. I certainly did not expect the Lakers to pursue Shannon, after signing Barnes. Pursuing Shannon means that the front office does not plan on re-signing Sasha after his contract expires. Having Shannon will give the front office the option of trading Sasha's expiring contract before the trade deadline. If Sasha plays well next year, they might keep him for the rest of the year, but if there are injuries to the roster, or certain players do not perform as expected, Sasha's contract will be a nice insurance policy at the trade deadline.

Pls Dr Buss Sign Brown and the two rookies coz we need em lets carry 14 on our roster this year. Great Job Mitch.
Go Lakers!!!

Mamba24, PG&R pointed out that he thinks my Capital 'C' has implications of a certain hated "ugly-green team". I pointed out that that's why I refer to them in their native guttural descriptor, the "Keltics".

The psychological trauma of being associated with that certain "ugly-green team" by virtue of my 'C' is unbearable. I'm about to shrek and donkey my lunch all over the place.

I hereby make a motion to the members of this Blog that, from this date forward, the "ugly-green" team be referred to in the GUTTURAL "KELTIC" DESCRIPTOR.

Do I Have A Second?

PLEASE VOTE TO SAVE MY 'C'...

GO LAKERS!!!!!! ONE, TWO, THREE-PEAT SQUARED!!!!!!

Hey Everyone,

I apologize for not having the link of an article I read yesterday that had Mitch Kupchak ranked #13 among the 30 GMs in the league! Obviously, they had Pat Riley #1, but some of the the other guys in front of Kupchak are a joke! I mean, Kupchak not trading Kobe and stealing Pau is good enough to at least be in the top three. Add to it that the Lakers have made three straight finals appearances, won back to back titles and have now added more pieces to strengthen their bench and Kupchak is #13?!!! Other than the Walton blunder and Malone/Payton failure, Kupchak has stepped out of the Logo's shadow and has become his own man and a great GM. He may be #13 on that list, but he's #2 on my list behind the great Jerry West.

@ the oof | - just saw the interview lmao

at the end he says ' LA HERE I COME "

ahahahah gotta love it!

Bronx,

LOL! You're joining the fun as well...thanks for the article. I enjoy reading and seeing the progress of our rookies. I believe that Mitch scored big time on this draft!

Marc B - I'll second for you. Can't be having any puking. I'm a sympathetic puker. If you puke, I puke. Just say NO to puke. Say YES to the C.

"Other than the Walton blunder and Malone/Payton failure"

Mitch has other blunders:

Vlad Rad Signing (I remember Jon K. was so ecstatic when it happened now look what happened to Space Cadet)

The Butler-Brown trade: As much as it later on got Gasol which really made it a distant memory at the time it was a total steal for Washington

Signing Cook to a 3 year extension: Yes Cook got Ariza but he could have made due without the extension.

Not saying Mitch is still a bad GM he more than made it up but he has other blunders than the Payton/Malone failure and the Walton 6 year extension.

Wow, to be able to get Shannon and sign our rookies..that would be incredible..already an incredible job by Mitch, but to be able to get that all done, would be something special..Man, can we start the season now!!! :) Go Lakers..

LAL818,

" ' LA HERE I COME "

ahahahah gotta love it!"

Matt Barnes is a So Cal, boy. A problem with Southern Californians is that we often don't appreciate what we've got as much as we could.

L.A. can be a hassle, but once you've left it for a while you sure begin to appreciate all those things you can get here that you can't get anywhere else.

I'm sure Matt Barnes feels good to be coming home.

Dude, he's a fricken Laker now! You know how excited he must be?

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Ok so I guess I'll take back what I said, we can watch SB excite the crowd with dunks, and it won't come after a blown lead now... wow you talk about loaded..

I hope Mitch gets a deal done for Shannon. As one-dimensional as some may think he appears to be on the court, UPS has other qualities that I believe greatly add to this team. He's young - an energy boost off the bench that can change the feel of the game. He's athletic - HUGE understatement there - which can really get the crowd going. He's likeable and a great locker room guy. He knows the system. And I recall many instances where he showed he also has ice water in his veins - draining big 3's and free throws. All in all I'd love to keep him in P&G. GET IT DONE MITCH!!

Magic Phil - you need to settle down. Nemaia is the resident pot-stirrer these days. You're just asking for trouble!!

Shannon Brown is the ONLY Laker that gives us back the youth and athleticism we lost when Trevor went away. I love the older defense oriented bench mob Mitch has built this summer, but you gotta have at least ONE young high flyer for when the situation requires it. Nothing demoralizes a team like getting posterized and Shannon is the Laker to do that when needed. I think Luke should take the season off and/or we trade Sasha for a trade exception or cheap spare parts.

If we re sign Shannon, that tells me that Luke isn't going play this year.

MH

Posted by: michael h | July 23, 2010 at 12:18 PM

michael h....I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I was wondering why Mitch said he was optimistic about the resolution of Shannon's situation in a "couple of weeks." Now, it dawns on me that he may need the extra time to clarify Luke's medical situation. I don't wish Luke ill, but I'd rather see Shannon on the team than him. Luke scored 69 points last year. He was paid $5.26M. That's roughly $76,000 a point. Luke should fall down on his knees everyday and thank God for the NBA Player's Association. Relative to his actual contributions to the Lakers, he has recieved extremely handsome compensation.

Thanks Justa... Glad to know you've got my back.

However, since others on this blog seem indifferent, I am changing my name to "The Triangulator".

Knowing that my 'C' is being associated with the Keltics, I would've kept on Shrek & Donkey'ing my meals all over the place. I've been a Laker fan for far too long to survive such a series of upheavals.

For a week, I will keep the "formerly known as" tag so that others will know of my name change. After that, I am "The Triangulator".

GO LAKERS!!!!!! ONE, TWO, THREE-PEAT SQUARED!!!!!!

Something to think about...

Mitch is doing a GREAT job infusing our roster with new, hungry blood. Mitch is bolstering our bench in every area that needed it. Brown/Barnes/Ratliff/Ebanks/Caracter are a serious upgrade over Powell/Mbenga/Farmar/Walton/Vujacic (if you needed to trot out an entire line up of benchies, sans Lamar). Mitch should rank WAY higher than 17th out of 30...but that already means the rest of the league considers the Lakers underdogs to Team Glory Hole, or Miami Thrice or what-have-you (don't matter what you call 'em, they're like mini vans in the 80's - top heavy and prone to rolling over).

With this line-up (should we sign Brown, Ebanks and Caracter) we will have youth, experience, athleticism and vertern poise all coming off the bench, to say nothing of our first 6 or 7 players. We match up well vs speed, half court grinders, and savy veteran squads. In short, this Laker team is the most STACKED I've seen since we got Malone and Payton and the rest of our championship guys came off the bench.

Before you go reminding me of how that team lost to Detroit in the Finals (I know what happened, I watched it), I'll remind you of one quality that particular team lacked. Youth and athleticism, something that Detroit had in spades with a young Rip H. and T.Prince as well as Chauncy, Big Ben and Sheeeeeeeeeeeed in their primes.

Re-signing Brown gives us a proven NBA athlete off the bench, a decent spot up shooter and a guy who knows the system. We have lots of small, tradeable contracts should we feel the need to make a move at the deadline and best of all, our championship core is still intact minus 2 guys who barely played in the playoffs and Farmar, who i think we can all agree has been upgraded with the addition of Blake.

Nice job, Mitch, sign Brown and pull off the most unheralded coup de tat this season. I'm cool with the Lakers being the 800 pound gorilla in a submarine that nobody suspects. That's one more collective chip on the team's shoulder.

That team actually lacked two qualities...

I thought AK (in his article in Land 'O Lakers) brought up a couple of good "concerns" about adding Barnes. Even so, I'm going to my standard fall back position in cases such as this - If Kobe's happy, I'm happy. I just hope Barnes really is as happy as he says he is, and that his happiness will translate into wanting to work hard on his game - AND on his ability to fit in with his teammates chemistry-wise. If he can be the solid all around guy that Mitch et al seem to think he can be, then this is a fabulous get for us.

Blitz,

Thanks for pointing out the other blunders I overlooked. How could I forget the "space cadet", Butler for Kwamay Brown and the not so cookie monster disaster? Man, I know one thing, when Blitz sets up shop, he means business!!! That's why guys like yourself, Hobbit and LakerTom are mainstays on this blog despite your disagreements. Variety is definitely the spice of life.

lewstrs / mamba24 -

I need to get on some bandwagons.

PRONTO.

LOL!!!!!!!

Nemaia...you're welcome.
You always have such good insight, it's the least I could do. I really enjoy your posts. I have high hopes for our 2 rookies as well. I love how the team has been reconfigured. The only caveat for me is the Sasha/Luke dynamic. I don't like to bash Laker players, but these 2 guys are taking up a lot of cap space for very minor contributions.

Justa, milady, how nice of you to join us. We've missed you. Just because MM is going on vacation, doesn't mean you have to go on vacation with him and leave the rest of us. LOL! JK! We miss you because you're so DAMN FUNNY!!! Nothing but love for you here!!!

Kupchack is a BAD BAD MAN! The last five years he has been a HALL OF FAMER! Jerry and Jim's wallet, I am grateful!

Marc B - you're taking it too personally lol! There aren't enough people on here over the summer to get an actual and true poll result. If people keep changing their names, I'm gonna lose it - it's hard to keep up! Especially when you can't keep your regular name on the live chat if you use facebook or twitter.... Help me help YOU.

BTW, long time lurker here who just started posting. Want to say a quick kudos to everyone on these boards. Being a Laker fanatic (tho not to the level of some of the folks here), I search high and low for Laker news, even in the off-season. Have to say the quality of the posts here are great. Not only factually accurate but also with great insight and depth. As an example of the "analysis" I read elsewhere, one supposed sportswriter talked about the great Laker's lineup of bigs, with Ratliff joining Bynum, Gasol, Odom, DJ, and Josh Powell... Some people just don't have a clue and shouldn't be writing.

Matt Barnes is a So Cal, boy. A problem with Southern Californians is that we often don't appreciate what we've got as much as we could.

L.A. can be a hassle, but once you've left it for a while you sure begin to appreciate all those things you can get here that you can't get anywhere else.

yes, see this is where stars are made guys, LA we are the home to everything and anything, no other city compares to this magnificant beauty that is named City of Angeles... so i agree 100% jon he should be pleased that LAKERS signed him to play for such a great and talanted organization... i dont think any team will stand in our way, even the power teams moved from west to east...

i mean think about it, how many good Western COnf. teams we have had last season that almost killed us? with so many good players..

JAZZ, THUNDER, MAVS, SUNS, SPURS, THUNDER but you got nothing on the Eastern End... i mean nothing...

only CELDICKS n ORLAND, but now its THE MEAT AND CELDICKS so its gonna be a smooth ride for us in the WEST this season guys, i think that calls for the celebration, lets get drunk, since last finals we went through an emotional roller coaster ride, which went from angre/sadness to joy/happines so lets take this summer and get ready for smooth sailing come when season starts....

as my dear friend jon k always puts it...

what do we play for!??? RIGNSSS!!!

Lakers TODAY! Lakers TMRW! Lakers FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO LAKERRRRRRRRRRSSSSS!!!

and as mamba24 puts it........ OUT FREAKING STANDING SIRRR!!!!

Justa, I'm just stiring a bit, I'm the co-stirer, Nemaia still the boss...

I sense a Luke Walton medical retirement coming.

jamie

Brown/Barnes/Ratliff/Ebanks/Caracter are a serious upgrade over Powell/Mbenga/Farmar/Walton/Vujacic.

This is unbelievable. I still can't believe it. Blake and Odom. Lakers are 12 man deep. I just can't stop smiling. I must be dreaming!

Welcome Lalaland.

Yeah - we've got quite a cast of characters here, but a fabulous mix AND a great blog god who always keeps the Lakers jones at bay.

nemaia - lol - NO there is no vacationing with the blog god in my future. Heck - I'd be happy to have a vacay at all this summer....!

And YES - for all of you who just don't know - I'M FUNNY DAMMIT.

I feel better already....

Mitch has something up his sleeve with Shannon signing. Wonder what it is? Mitch make your summer perfect!

Magic Phil - too many stirrers spoil the stirree.. or something like that...

I'M FUNNY DAMMIT.

yo johnwallers thanks for the link, i came across one by accident that id think ud love. its http://sportscomplainer.com/nba out

I'm as patriotic as the next man, but I'm getting just a wee bit tired of USA basketball. Now, the big man rotation for that team has been depleted by injury and it's being said that Lamar Odom may have to play some center.

What? Lamar is a 3 or a 4, not a 5! The last thing he needs is being injured while trying to play out of position. He doesn't need to bang all summer long with some over zealous international bigs who are trying to prove themselves against an NBA Champion Laker.

I don't know all the particulars about how players are insured against possible injury during these international games. All I know is it's a big risk that they take and their teams can't be too thrilled about it. Be careful, Lamar. Your real team needs you. It's time to THREE-PEAT!!

Bronx,

Thanks again. Every blogger here brings their unique perspective and insights to the table.

I'm also intrigued to see what happens with Luke Walton and whether or not he'll ever be healthy enough to play again. I don't wish any ill upon him, but it's a real possibility and is serious enough to where Kupchak has had to make some serious decisions about what additions to make to the team via draft and FA signings. As far as Sasha is concerned, I'm hoping this season he's more Vujaswish than Vujabrick, because we need the machine to operating at his best.

Mitch has done a magnificent job of drafting and signing players that can fill in nicely if Luke and Sasha can't produce.

I can't stop thinking about who is gonna be the most hated Laker amongst out opponents, Sasha or Barnes. Or who will recieve the first punch in the face. Or give the first elbow to the face.

just a point of fact, but I believe Matt Barnes is a Sacramentoan....Sacramentan...Sacramentoian....

Whatever. He's from Sacramento, born in Santa Clara. Honorary SoCal guy by my book; were inclusive not exclusive.

I disagree that Malone was a blunder. His knee injury late in the playoffs cost the Lakers that championship. Mitch couldn't foresee that.

I think you can thank Phil for Luke's contract. At the time of his re-signing, Luke came off a career year and was (and remains) a Phil Jackson favorite. He played in only 60 games that season, but followed up with 74 games in his first year of this contract. The foreseeability of Luke's injury proneness was his dad's constant injury plagued seasons.

Mitch probably should've negotiated some team options, but health issues don't always follow a player.

Derek Fisher had foot surgery for a stress fracture in his right foot back in the 2000-2001 season and missed 62 games that season. Pundits were questioning how long he would last in the NBA. He played all 82 games next season and went on to a long and productive career--Thank God! So, You Just Never Know Now Do You!

Now Payton, as I've said before, Was a Major Blunder. And Proof That Some PGs, even with strong skill sets, Don't Fit the Triangle!

GO LAKERS!!!!!! ONE, TWO, THREE-PEAT SQUARED!!!!!!

REMEMBER LAKERTOM'S "BIG LINEUP?" . . .

Remember the honorable LakerTom's persistence that the Lakers should have tried to develop that "Big Lineup"? Bynum/Gasol/Odom/Artest/Kobe indeed looks HUGE on paper. The problem was they could not compensate for slower feet and lack of 3-point threat.

So, in honor of LakerTom's thinking (which is a gift for sure), what about the new "Big Lineup" now? With Drew's minutes limited to conserve his health, this might just be the lineup we see in action. Kudo's to LakerTom!

Gasol
Odom
Artest
Barnes
Kobe

This line up is long, quick, and possess 3-point shooting when Artest and Barnes are relaxed. BUT, THIS IS THE KEY. Look at the DEFENSE that line-up delivers!

Mike

Fatty - weeelllll - ok. Just because you're otherwise having a hard time personally - so here it is:

P I N C H !!!!!!!!!

Wuttup LakerMike! Mrs. LakerMike!

Justa,

No, no, no! Magic Phil was stirring the pot and I just happened to be one of the ingredients that got mixed up in his stew of frivolity and jesting! He's the one that got this whole thing started by pointing out that Matt Barnes couldn't spell or write with his now infamous "los angles.." tweet. LOL!!! I guess it's guilt by association though. I better choose my friends more carefully, LOLLLLLLLLLL!!!!

@JAY JAY... “Well as usual we agree on 90% and disagree on 10.” Hey, Jai, 9 out of 10 ain’t bad, LOL.
~
While I was once high on Shannon, I think his lack of basketball IQ is going to prevent him from ever becoming a starter or solid role player in the NBA. His poor decision making on both offense and defense as shown by his tendency to over-dribble and to get caught helping when he should have stayed with a hot 3-point shooter are at the heart of why he will not be resigned. Bottom line, I think he has already hit the ceiling as far as his NBA career goes. There is still some talk of the Lakers adding another guard since we only have four on the roster but I hope they do not waste the money on Shannon Brown. A young true point guard prospect like Jeremy Lin would have been the ideal solution, someone to groom behind Fisher and Blake.
~
Sasha, on the other hand, has something that the Lakers will find extremely important this coming season, which is a great stroke. Granted, he has regressed over the past two years but definitely started to show signs of getting his act together as we headed into the playoffs last year. I’ve always judged players true outside shooting ability by how they shoot free throws and Sasha may well be the best and most clutch free throw shooter on this team, including Kobe and Fisher. This is another contract year for Sasha and I have a hunch he is going to come up big and actually earn the right to remaining a Laker. If he can shoot mid-40% from beyond the arc, the Machine will get a well deserved shot to continue wearing purple and gold.

@YELLOFEVER... “well said. took the words right out of my mouth.. i seem to agree with most of what you say when you leave bynum out of ur posts. =). Never a problem to disagree, YF. By the end of this year, you will even be agreeing with what I say about Andrew. The rest of the NBA has no idea how good the Lakers are going to be with a healthy Drew. The biggest advantage we are going to see from this bench is fewer minutes for both Drew and Pau, increasing our chances that we will head into the playoffs this year with our key big man advantage healthy and well rested, not to mention Kobe and Fish.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@LEWSTERS... OK, put me in the Health factor bandwagon for sure with a double dose of Lakers good karma protective prescriptions for Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, and Kobe Bryant. The only “practice” season bandwagons that matter to me are the HOME COURT ADVANGE THROUGH THE PLAYOFFS and the ANDREW BYNUM ALL-STAR STARTER Suburban Bandwagons. You need to add a KOBE BRYANT FINALS MVP THREE-PEAT and a LAKERS 16-0 PLAYOFF SWEEP Suburban Bandwagons. Next time I go to Vegas, I would also like to buy you a drink for the great job you are doing.
lewstrs / mamba24 - I need to get on some bandwagons. PRONTO. LOL!!!!!!! Posted by: justanothermambafan | July 23, 2010 at 01:14 PM
That's Lewstrs!! I'm strictly Comic relief & Roll calls! Lol! Sorrrry!
Posted by: Mamba24 | July 23, 2010 at 01:38 PM
??
But mamba24, your bandwagons are unique, and the caravans, altough visually entertaining, their lack of content make them a bandwagon-lite, -Sorry LEWSTRS nothing against you-.
I prefer the classic flavor of bandwagons.
If we were to bring back Shannon, who had some amazing flashes of brilliance last year, it definitely would be the icing on the offseason's cake.
The one blunder we made in free agency was to prioritize Blake over Bell. I believe that time will show this to be a mistake. Oh well, Kupchak's #1 wish meant more than Kobe's #1 wish. Sad.
The #1 wish on my wish list would be to unload/trade/whatever Luke Walton, who is just excess baggage and excess salary-cap space. I sure wish that the front office would recognize this. He is pure liability on the court, even if he's a model player in the locker room.
LakerTom - come on man. You could have at least added:
@JUSTA...Yes you ARE funny dammit.
I don't ask for much around here...
Mamba24 - wth?? I know you had a bandwagon rolling last thread.... Come on man!! Hook me up!!!
And...ya gotta love DFish.....
Fisher also didn't seem concerned by the new look of the Miami Heat, even though the Lakers were not favored to win the championship in the eyes of Las Vegas oddsmakers.
“That’s fine," Fisher said. "That doesn’t change [anything] with us.”
Absolutely love that quote!
Triangulator,
I agree with your point about Malone/Payton. I meant to say that the blunder was Payton, although at the time it looked like a great deal. If Malone hadn't gotten hurt, it's very, very possible that we would've won the title that year. But as you mentioned, the blunder was with Payton, not Malone. Just thought I'd clarify. Thanks for your great posts.
What the hell. How is Miami still signing people. Now Arroya. Shit I thought they had no money after Miller. Someone really needs to investigate this team. They dump their whole roster to make room for LJ. They must have known something. I hope this team falls on thier AAAAASSSSS.
CrzyFan
whos hungry?
cuz im starvinggg.....
jon you wanna race me to the taco trucks??? lol
Miami will not make The Finals. Look for Orlando to sign CP3 and destroy the East.
dear mamba24, raiderlaker1980 and everyone else on the TMAC bus.... we got a flat tire and got stuck....
"McGrady to work out for Bulls on Monday"
:( im sad
Mamba24 - wth?? I know you had a bandwagon rolling last thread.... Come on man!! Hook me up!!! Posted by: justanothermambafan | July 23, 2010 at 01:56 PM
I was just helping Lewstrs out for a couple minutes, I wouldn't dare take such liberties mam. I know my place in life. Court Jester, Roll Calls that's me. Now Justa & the rest of you Laker Nation you have to learn to have...wait for it...PATIENTS with me. LOL!
LakerTom,
Great posts. I agree that with a healthy, motivated Andrew Bynum, no team can touch the Lakers. Aside from the fact that we're avid Bynum supporters, I appreciate that you share a lot of things about the Lakers in general, something I think gets overlooked sometimes on this blog. You've stated over and over that you're a LAKER fan first and foremost and that you're favorite Laker is Kobe Bryant, despite your Perry Mason-like defense of Andrew Bynum. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion of all things Lakers.
LAL818, yes that tire busted, we tried to use fix a flat, and then the innertube popped. Barnes squashed that wagon, but hey, just like the CP3 idea, I can always add him to the roster on NBA 2K11, so no biggie lol. In any event, this team managed to improve over a back to back champ roster and keep the mainstays... gotta love it!
Mamba24 - I beg to differ. YOU are indeed roll calls, but YOU are also BANDWAGONS.
lewstrs is CARAVANS.
BIG difference. HUGE.
Now come on - do your sis a favor & hook me up!
Do I Have A Second? PLEASE VOTE TO SAVE MY 'C'... Do I Have A Bandwagon or Am I Doomed to Change My Name? Posted by: Marc B (With a 'C') | July 23, 2010 at 12:45 PM
* SWEET JESUS!! PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE. Does this man have to beg to get a second and a BandWagon. I WILL USE EVERY CLICHE IN THE BOOK TILL HE DOES. Now I'm rapidly losing PATIENTS WITH YOU.! lol! Marc with a C I can give you a third but I'm not too good with seconds. WTF! Just flow with me People, this is leading somewhere I know it is.......
damn, i went from hating that punk-ass barnes to liking him a WHOLE LOT. great interview with him last night on the radio. another so cal boy comes home. barnes is very athletic and will fit in just fine with the lakers. too bad for walton, he might be the odd man out! any chance the lakers deal walton? grant it, L.A. would have to pay part of his salary to get the deal done, whaddya lakers maniacs think? shannon needs to come back to the fold. you'll get your $$$, you're still a young man. like jon k says, "what do we play for?" RINGS! # 17 coming up next year! the year we tie boston!
cupcake is getting greedy
It looks like Luke Walton might miss whole 2010-11 season with his back problem, and I think Mitch will re-sign Shannon.
http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/news/story?id=5405069
LOL. Word is that the fact that Atlanta is going to sign Josh Powell means that they're no longer interested in signing Shaq.
He didn't have no damn flat! I have to admit, I sabatoged it. I had to do it to atone for my sins. Now never, ever, ever as long as you live mention that hideous name to me again. Pleassssssssssssssssssssssse! Thank you kind sir!
I have to ask again folks, before the caravan gets rolling full steam.. are we going to caravan to tie the bulls 72 wins mark, or are we going to shoot for at least 73? I mean this is Phils swan song correct? Why stop at tying, if we're going to shoot for greatenss, why not greatest of greatess..we are talking about the Lakers aren't we? greatness is what we expect!
Justa,
Have some PATIENTS girl, you'll be added to the bandwagon,LOL!!! You seem a little edgy today, is because MM is going on vacation? You've got the rest of us to keep you company...
I want to give Mitch a standing ovation!
Marvelous job this offseason!
Kupchak has addressed the Lakers needs perfectly.
Outside shooting - check!
Steve Blake and Matt Barnes can both hit outside shots.
Defensive toughness - check!
Ratliff is one of the best shot-blocking centers, and we have all seen that centers can play a lot longer than other positions.
Matt Barnes is a toughnosed defender that could compliment Artest very well, providing some defensive depth off the bench.
Blake is gritty and smart, his defensive game may not be his best quality but he doesn't back down from anyone.
Finding gems late in the draft - CHECK!
Caracter and Ebanks are two finds! They both also give the Lakers defensive presences with their rebounding for Caracter and wiry defensive skills for Ebanks.
Working within a limited budget - check-plus!
Jerry's protege is catching up quick to the masters prowess!
I'm loving these moves, from Mitch LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM!
Come on back Shannon, this will give the Lakers the deepest team in a long time!
My goodness, the Lakers walked away winning the '10 duel with a Colt .44, but have showed back up at the saloon sporting a 500 Magnum. This should be a FUN season! BRING IT, MIAMI, YOU'RE GOIN' DOWN HARD!!!
GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now what would really be great is if we meet them in the Finals & beat them for # 17!
LEWSTRS I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE. That person who declares that "I AM FUNNY DAMNIT" made me post this Bandwagon. Her name sounds something like...JustAnotherMambaFan! Lol!
THE LAST HURRAH!! 72 GAMES FOR PHIL - BANDWAGON
*________________________________________________*
(01) HOBBBITMAGE –OWNER - Let's get this party started. I am predicting the Lakers will win 72 gameS
(02) PURPLE AND GOLD REIGN – DRIVER - Phil Jackson mentioned his desire to make his final NBA campaign a "grand one." I know he would never publicly admit to it, but with the improvements to the roster, it wouldn't surprise me IF one of the goals he sets out for the team is to try to break the Bull's 72-10 record...or, at least go for 70 wins. We shall see.
(03) MAMBA24 – RIDING SHOTGUN - This ISH is going to be so much fun this season. I tell you what this means. This means Phil is going after every damn record there is in his final season. 33 in a row, 16 - 0 Playoffs, 72 games regular season
(04) JUSTANOTHERMAMBAFAN – MATT BARNES PSYCHIATRIST – I need to get on some bandwagons. PRONTO.
(05) EAST COAST JESSIE - I'm so excited too
(06) LAL818 - SECURITY - I'm riding on the roof, or open the sunroof lol i need to breath this 72 games.... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh smells like victory
(07)NEMAIA FALETOGO - I liken PJ's last stand to what Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday said in the movie Tombstone, "the final ride of Wyatt Earp and his immortals." PJ, his callous gun for hire in Kobe Bryant will lead this group and destroy any man wearing a red sash(uniform), the Miami Heat(the Cowboys in the movie)!!!
(08) HUMANOMALY - This is Phil's last year, the rookies may not even get onto the floor. Phil wants to go out with a BANG!!!! He wants to go out dominating. So look for less of those 20 point leads Phil wants to make a statement. Now he has the team, as long as they stay healthy, the core of the team knows the system, the new players are all traveled veterans, not counting the rookies, who are just going to be scrimmage players. I think this will be a 67 win season, at least.
(098) LONGTIMLAKERLOVER – MATT BARNES SPEECH COACH - Put me on that Phil list,
(10) JON K – RON RON’S SECURITY - I so want to pound the Meat into mush. Thanks, LeCreep, for giving us the emotional motivation for Threepeat. Prepare for domination.
(11) LA818 -
Nemaia - edgy?? I sound edgy?? WTH??? I can't ask to be put on a bandwagon without being accused of being edgy?? What the hell is this blog coming too?? People changing their names and C's flying out the door. Blog gods going on vacation. No bandwagons. No Shannon yet. Edgy?? You aint' SEEN edgy yet. OMG EDGY??
Huh? What's that? Oh.... *taking a huge swig of vodka (and Pepsi) to wash the percoset down*......
Whew - that's better!! Now what were you saying?
ME?? Edgy?? LMAO - I'm never edgy!! All is well in Justaville!!!
I'M FUNNY (not edgy) DAMMIT.
