Lakers finish summer league winless

The Lakers didn't win any of their five NBA Summer Pro League games in Las Vegas.

They finished their play with an 80-71 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday at Cox Pavilion.

All five Lakers' starters scored in double figures.

Second-round draft picks Devin Ebanks (11 points, 7 rebounds) and Derrick Caracter (10 points, six rebounds) continued to play solid basketball for the Lakers.

Free-agent guard Gerald Green led the Lakers with 18 points on eight-for-17 shooting.

Can we use Green?

OK LTLF, I will yield to what you said on Ebanks and Caracter. I still believe that good rookies can beat fellow rookies from other team. E & C lack the leadership in capturing victory, it is another individual show of prowness. Let's cpontinue the evaluation in the preseason games but it is not a good show card. If we were a job recruiter, we saw lots of potentials but did not appreciate the results of the tests

Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter are both steals in the draft and should make the lakers roster. the only thing is devin Ebanks is not agrressive enough to me i know hes trying to run the offence but come on lead the team man. his ball handling looks as horrible as Shannon Brown and he didnt finish at the hoop as great as i thought. Caracter was a fouling machine out there and had some of the worst passing turnovers i have ever seen. He doesnt like to put the ball down and go off the dribble and has his back to the basket. The 2 rookies do have positives but those are the things that was killing me all 5 games and they are so good but could WIN 1 GAME. Gerald Green iss a disgrace is we would drafted him instead of Bynum we woulda been dumb, hes a ball hog that takes dumb shots and doesnt pass caracter the ball in the post hes washed up and soesnt have it mentally i cant stand the guy. DJ Strawberry was good to me played great Defence and ran the offence well just no jump shot so u know. Sims the center could take Mbenja spot he was ok to me. The summer league team was a bunch of bums compared to all the other teams

Keep in mind all these guys are learning the triangle which takes time so I wouldn't expect them to win too many games. I'm guessing the coaches are looking for fundamentals, athleticism, coachability, and effort to see if they can ride the pines on the Lakers while they learn and develop, making them ready in a year or two to step in and contribute when the current crop of stars is being phased out.

Read a lot of positive comments about the two rookies over the last week or so, then watched my first summer league game today. Came away a little less excited. These two draft picks are nice picks for the 2nd round, but make no mistake about it, these guys are very raw. I saw at least 2 guys on the Spurs team, by comparison, who looked more NBA ready than our two guys.

Oh GOD- I feel you on all accounts, the Spurs team as a real Baller.

god,

I agree with some of your comments, but you missed out on the first four games. Sure, they didn't have their best game today, but looking at their body of work over 5 games, even in summer league isn't bad at all. I am overly excited about Caracter and Ebanks with their potential to improve and grow. To do well and remain in the top 5 among all summer league players shows that they belong, considering where they were drafted. Both have a ways to go, but I agree with Mitch when he said they did well in practice and in the games. He also said that he was really happy with what he saw out of Caracter and Ebanks.

Edwin,

Hate to disagree with you my brother, but Kobe may not have been able to elevate the game of the guys who were playing with Caracter and Ebanks. They were that bad! Now Kobe may have won some of those games by himself, well, because he's Kobe. I mean Caracter fouled and turned it over a lot, but he nearly averaged a double-double, shot nearly 60% from the field and was their best player on the floor and Ebanks was a close second. But the rest of the guys(Sims played well at times and Strawberry showed flashes)played like crap. We may have had the worst guards in all of summer league. None of them could hit a jumper consistently, pass the ball well or play under control. Gerald Green is completely clueless on how to play team ball, period. They were very undisciplined and were sporadic in running the offense. Whenever they were leading or kept the game close, it was because they were running the offense(Jabber started off pretty well), going inside to Caracter and moving the ball. Then they would start playing wild, too much one on one play, get sloppy and end up losing pretty big.

I think Caracter and Ebanks will make the roster and help us in the future. Kudos to them for their hard play this summer. Caracter has to show up at training camp leaner and in better shape. That would make the Laker brass even more impressed.

Ebanks & Caracter were hampered by the worst guards of the Summer league. Probably weighed them down for the final game against the Spurs. Did the Laker's Summer coach do any coaching? The team lost leads and showed no guard fundamentals!

Ebanks & Caracter with Benga/Sims would be fine to round out the bench. However, to beat Wade's Miami Heat or Rondo's Celtics would require Lakers to add another perimeter defender like Barnes/Butler who can also shoot the 3 pointer. He is needed even if Brown is back!

CARRACTER AND EBANKS WILL DO WELL. ROME WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY AND THE TRIANGLE OFFENSE TAKES TIME TO LEARN. THESE TWO MEN WILL DEFINITELY UP GRADE OUR BENCH AS TIME PREVAILS. PSALMS 4

overall we got 2 solid draft picks that should make the roster...

what sucks is we didnt even win 1 game but our draft picks are doing good.

I would invite Caracter, EBanks, DJ Starwberry and Frank Robinson in the summer camp.

THE GREAT PHIL JACKSON CAN MAKE D.J. STRAWBERRY A WINNER. HE PLAYS GREAT DEFENSE, HE'S ALWAYS AROUND THE BALL , AND D.J. HUSTLE FOR LOOSE BALLS. WE HAVE GREAT COACHING AND I PERSONALLY THINK PLAYING FOR PHIL WILL MAKE HIM NBA READY. I KNOW MY BASKETBALL, WE SAVE LOTS OF MONEY, THE ROSTER IS SHORT, AND PHIL LOVES BIG POINT GUARDS. REMEMBER PHIL KNOWS HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT PLAYERS.

Lamar Odom will be MATCH UP against Caracter in Lakers summer camp. Odom is going to have his HANDS FULL containing Carcter in the low block. Funny! How I never thought Caracter would have any difficulty playing Odom at Power Forward position.

Caracter has a natural aggresivenes in him.

On the other hand, Ron Artest is going give lots of problem for Devin Ebanks. EBanks handle on the ball is suspect and Artest dfense is going to kill him.

How Miami Will Win Every Game-- if you watch two teams playing each others, as if the other teams are out-match and with less superstar, you can see how the style of the players will affect the other player of the loosing team in a game. That is, the style of LeBron, Wade, Bosh, will affect how the other team style; that is, the loosing team players will have a tendency to 'copy' or match their style of play, which will affect their performance. In turn, Miami will capitalize on this. Instead of focusing on what they do best, the other less talented players will focus and try to enumerate their style and this is where they will goof up get into trouble playing with the Miami heat and beat LA and the rest! (not sure if my theory sounds here, but something like that, lol)

La Heat, You make absolutely no sense at all.

La Heat, please have someone proof read your comments before you post. But I think even with the correct spelling and punctuation it would still not make any sense.

DaMaGe looks like you watched too many of these crappy summer league games. I agree with your expertize, Caracter and Ebanks are both steals in the draft, and I'm excited to see if they will make the team. Watching them play, especially in the second halves of the games it's like they ran out of gas (that's how they've lost all of the games) and I would be too if I had too play most of the game and play everyday. On the other hand, Lakers squad had the worst bench in the league. Common now, Sanborn couldn't even get a spot in Chinese developmental league, only Frank Robinson played hard (and maybe Kurz too) that's why they began starting him. Too me, both Caracter and Ebanks shows flashes of a solid players in the making, they just need some seasoning. The rest of the squad is washed out. Yes, Strawberry, Robinson, and Sims had few good plays, but they've been playing for few years now and to make an NBA team you need to have skills not few good plays.
