Kobe Bryant's camp starts Wednesday

Amid the hoopla surrounding the news that LeBron James will announce in an hourlong special Thursday on ESPN his future whereabouts, a few on Twitter and in the L.A. Times Lakers blog joked that Kobe Bryant must be laughing right now.

Actually, he's starting his basketball camp.

The Kobe Basketball Academy runs from Wednesday through Sunday at UC Santa Barbara for kids between 8 and 18, going, costing $575 for day campers and $700 for night campers. It serves as the perfect counterpoint that Bryant is teaching kids basketball fundamentals at the same time James' hourlong special reflects the excess and ego that define much of modern sports.

Bryant has often talked about how he benefited during his childhood from striking a good balance between just going out and playing and also properly learning the fundamentals of the game. So it's interesting to see how he approaches the camp. But if this video from last year reveals anything, it shows that both Bryant and the campers had a blast.

Why not make a play for Jermain O'neal? He will fit the triangle perfectly.

LECRAB = NATURAL BORN LOSER

So Lecrab decides to promote himself in a one hour special?? little self indulgent would you think? and to say proceeds going to charity?? whos buyin that crap... give me a freakin break...

should be a more entertaining finals... netherlands vs germany wouldve been like spurs vs detroit finals.. brazil being lakers already eliminated

Will J.O'Neal be ok with the little money we got to offer him? Im not so sure. I believe he will end up in Dallas who has plenty of interest in him.

OK....Breaking news

Ric Bucher is reporting on ESPNews at 4:55 EST that Carlos Boozer has agreed to 5 yrs/$80M with the Bulls. Seems like the balance of power is swinging towards the East in terms of free agent signings. Losing Boozer and Stoudemire diminishes 2 of the Lakers' playoff opponents from this year's run. Stay tuned!

since the crab is really about self promotion/self marketing his own name brand he would be a fool to pass up the big stage of NY... bright lights big city of the biggest media capital of the world.. they can even buy him a championship there and dolan would pay luxury taxes up the ying yang..

miamis out.. cant see him goin back to the pisssshole in cleveland.. so my final 3 are CHI, NJ, NY.

i could be wrong though and lebron could totally puss out.

We still have some unfinished business...Enough on the dumb FA soap opera...

Give us the news that the Lakers have signed FISH...something about the Lakers...you know the "Reigning Back2Back Champs...

I don't think we can afford J.O. Some guys we could afford for cheap would be Jamal Magloire, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, or Tony Battie. None of which sound appealing. If they do want to spend money on a back-up center, they could maybe sign Brad Miller who is a Wennington or Longley type and I believe could flourish.

I really like the idea of Brad Miller, he will be a great back up center who can play some D, rebound, and spread the floor with his mid-range shot. Also big Z wouldnt sound bad either knowing he has a good mid-range shot also.

LeBronz is a Joke!!!!!!!!!

This isn't MLB, not a stat league!

Greatness in the NBA is measured by rings!
Bill, Magic, Larry, Michael, Kobe, Timmy, ect....

Not Charles, Dominique, Karl, and Lebron

The EAST GETTING BETTER MEANS LAKERS WILL HAVE THE HOME COURT ADVANTAGE ALL THE WAY to the FINALS. WINNINGEST TEAM IN THE NBA.

Magic
Celtics
Bulls
Miami
Hawks
Bucks
Wizards
Knicks
Sixers
Nets

All these teams got better.

The West got older. 2010 top three draft picks are all in the EAST, Amare and Boozer to EAST.

LEWSTRS

Of course we need Fisher back! Add me to that list!

Initially I was thinking he wasn't worth $5M, then thinking it over and reading some of the arguments for Fisher on the blog; I realized he ISN'T worth that to 29 teams but he IS WORTH that for the Lakers.

Isn't JO going to Dallas for half the MLE? I think we should at least ask he has a good relationship with Artest .

BULLS shaping to be the best team in the EAST.

Joakim Noah, Carlos Boozer, Taj Gibson, Loul Deng, Derrick Rose... and still has room for ONE MAX salary... dangerous!

New head coach is also the architect of Boston's defense.

I am thinking that "King of No Rings" is staying put. Can't believe that he would have this big deal and leave. Would be like rubbing salt into his home team and such.

We need a poll:
How is gonna be called LeBron depending on which team he lands?
Bulls: LeBull***t?
Any ideas?

2nd tier free agnets quickly falling, 3rd tier FA willbe next to fall in place.

All Bulls has to do now is sign ONE SOLID SG, how about all three of them Ray Allen, Mike Miller and Raja Bell. They probably can afford it too.

Thiboduea unites with Allen and Allen?

I'm glad we already have Steve Blake.

On Around the Horn today they were talking about Durrant signing and who would anyone want for the next 5 years, well, perhaps LeBron, but no mention of Kobe. Did you hear that Kobe? I guess you'll be lucky to be the best for maybe one year, ha, ha! Kobe, the REAL MVP for the last 3 years and still no respect. Well, that ought to get him going for a few more Rings. No wait, he's Kobe, he don't need no stinking motivation from anyone!!

According to BSPN, the Mavs, Nugs and Celts are offering only a portion of their MLE to get JO'Neal. He would be a great backup for Bynum, but I don't think the Lakers would offer O'Neal more money if they could've kept Mbenga for less money. We'll see how it plays out.

Could AI help us at all? I just don't know. On one hand I think he could, if. On the other, maybe not.

KNICKS's KING KONG! James.

AI would be a huge distraction.

Jermaine O'Neal could really help the Celtics if he goes there, because he can still defend the rim and gives them more offensively than Perkins ever could. He would help either the Mavs or Nuggets as well, but he's still a risk when it come to injuries.

CURIOUS:

If Hobbit and KBltiz, both Kobe worshippers would attend the camp (with fake kid id) and kiss the ground their beloved hero walks in UCSB.

hahahaha

We should get JO if we can. Playing him 15 minute a game will help us a lot.

CURIOUS:

NBA4ever:

You wrote: Greatness in the NBA is measured by rings!

Response: More importantly how do you measure it? One sheep goes rest follow..

Would Fisher leave the Lakers for the HEAT or Bulls, for 10M two year contract, he did it before when he signed with Golden State.

Again, Mitch thank you for getting Blake in advance, way ahead of this crazy free agency.

CURIOUS if this POST sounds BRAGGADOCIOUS:

With an I-Pad sitting at the bench at Ports O'Call in San Pedro chatting about Le Crab while breaking the shell of a real king crab and eating it with shrumps, lobster, garlic rice and soy sauce w/ lemon hmmm priceless! It is a celebration of the Loser.

Posted by: Edwin Gueco

They should let Fisher walk if he demands 1o mill for 2 years. Make no sense to sign him up.
We should invest that money in a big, someone to back up Bynum/Gasol and then sign Shanon at 3 mill for 2 years.
Shasha should be allowed to play the point.

Yeah, no sold on AI. Just only if, you know what I mean, if.

Still think the "King of No Rings" will be staying in Cleveland. Even he wouldn't torture his home area with a big public relations slap in the face?

I meant, not sold.

So, if LeBron stays in Cleveland that means a Cavs team with no Shaq, no Z (retiring I hear), and no Delonte West (no way him and LeBron can play together + legal issues).

End result? Cavs are much weaker than last year and Magic, Bulls and Heat (especially) are much better.

I don't see how that can help LeBron's "brand" after this ridiculous HOUR LONG SPECIAL (drumroll please!) to a ten second sentence stating "I decided to play with..."

If he doesn't play somewhere else or do something spectacular in Cleveland next year (can't), this brand is tarnished after two years of attention-seeking speculation-generating nonsense.

People (Clevelanders included) have all hit their saturation point... especially after Kobe and the Lakers have shown the world what winning is REALLY about.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Just my tought....If Sasha is our back up point guard, our Lakers are in a world of trouble, Sasha is the worst back up pg out there. This dude is a horrible ball handler, can not pass at all and turns the ball over more thant he makes assists, and cant even make a layup. This dude is a 3 point shooter and that is it. Please bring back Dfish, we need Fish!!!!!!

Actually, if you tune in to ESPN tomorrow night at 9pm eastern time, you'll see a 1 hour Terence & Philip special.

Jon K,

If I am correct and the "King of No Rings" is staying, I wonder if it will be for Max plus an opt out after 2 or 3 years. I'd bet on that part. You know, kinda like, "I'm giving you two or three years to add parts, then we'll dance once more if it doesn't work out."

BTW - Hollinger pointed out that the amount of the Boozer deal leaves just enough for one full max deal (in case LeBronze is going there as well).

With what we have coming back and the additions Mitch will make, I think we are going to be very tough. If Drew is healthy, VERY VERY tough!

VERY disappointed in seeing the prices for Kobe's BB Camp...

$475-$575 per kid...How can the poor families afford that...

It is bad enough the average family can't afford to watch a regular season Laker Game...Tickets, parking, food and souvenirs...over $500 minimum...

Is Kobe just for the rich, or just about the money...

Cmon Kobe, you made 23 mil last year...Give the poor kids a chance...Let them dream to be like you...It's the American way...

I would like to have Fisher back. Dog gone it, he's pretty weak during the season, but seems to show up in the Playoffs, when it is needed and counts the most.

Typo correction: $575-$700 per kid...

RealGM is reporting that LeBron James will announce which team he will sign with during the initial 10 minutes of Thursday's telecast.

Just the precense of Derek Fisher helps this team out alot. He is a true leader of this team, even if he doesnt play. Plus he is big come playoffs. The Lakers need Fish! I hope he becomes an assistant coach or some like that one day for the Lakers. He is a true Laker great, and has been great for this franchise.

Here's a funny story for you all. I took my son (about 12 at the time) to see the Lakers when Kobe was a rookie. I had my camera and my son had something for him to sign. I always taught my son to be respectful whether a player signs or not. Anyway, as Kobe was walking by, I said, "Mr. Bryant," twice and nothing. The light went on in my head and I said, "Kobe," he immediately stopped and turned around and graciously signed and took a pic with my son. I'm thinking of course he's not answering to Mr. Bryant, he's 18! Who ever has called him Mr. Bryant, ha, ha. Turned out great!

King James could be about to unite with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who have decided to play together for the Heat, forming a Miami super power team that would rock the league.I predict 4 or 5 NBA titles for King James and compatriot`s Wade@Boss.Its over Laker fans.lol hahaha

I picture the hour long special going something like this, with Lebron playing the roles of Apollo Creed, James Brown and Ivan Drago simultaneously:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzDDJm27vmc&feature=related

DSBJ,

Be sure to come back when that AIN'T what happens, ha, ha!

ENQUIRING MIND WANTS TO KNOW, JUST CURIOUS HERE..

Mamba24 the drama queen is back, weren't you suppose to be quitting the blog? How many times in the past have you posted that you were going to go in self imposed exile? Geeeez, all this drama for attention?

hahaha

Jermaine Oneal make Bynum look absolutely invincible. His just expired contract was the worst in league history. Worse than Joe Johnson.

He'll be another Aaron McKie if we bring him in, but at least Aaron McKie could contribute from the bench.

NEWS FLASH CBS NEWS! PRINCESS JIMMY HAS JUST CHANGED HIS ADDRESS FOR IRS PURPOSES TO CHICAGO & CHICAGO HAS AN ORAL AGREEMENT WITH CARLOS BOOZER.!! (LEBRONZE, BOOZER, DROSE,
NOAH, LUOL DENG!) That's your Eastern Conference Finalist Folks!!

LBJ's press conference is in Greenwich, Connecticut...in essence a New York suburb...

Would he do all that, to disappoint the city of Cleveland...

LMAO...well there you go Cavs fans...that's you "KING"

Boozer has signed with the Bulls, 80 mil for 5 yrs...

So who does the King want to play with...

Amare in New York...
Boozer in Chicago...
Jamison in Cleveland...
Devin Harris and Derrick Favors in New Jersey...

Donald,

With respect to you as a newbie on OUR LAKER blog, first, land LeBron. Second win another title before you count 3,4 and 5. Third, don't count your chickens before they hatch and last but not least, don't laugh at us if it hasn't happened.

Lewstrs
I think that's a fair price. Good things have to cost something.
I took my son to Magic Johnson's camp for 500 bucks and that was 20 years ago.
I couldn't afford it at all.. But if your kid loves hoops, and a certain player --you find a way. We've all scratched up 5oo bucks for things less wonderful than that.

I agree with LEWSTRS. That price is outrageous. I'm sure Kobe does a lot of other things that we don't hear about though.

The Bulls, now with Boozer, seem like the perfect fit for LeBron.

Go Lakers!

Mamba24,

For sure?! I thought I felt someone tugging at my foot?!

Donald "South Beach" Jones, no way LaBrick's ego would let him join the Heat, and play second fiddle to Dwane "this is my house" Wade. Keep dreaming, or inhaling whatever that you are smoking.

There's only one ball to go around. LeBrick would be worried crazy to give up the "youngest to reach ..." titles in the absense of rings.

-------------------------------------------------

This is what happens when you mix a fan base and LeBron James...

The fans automatically become dreamers, unrealistic and ignorant idiots...

The one trait they all share...premature ejaculation...They always shoot their wads prematurely, never finishing the job, like a bunch of inexperienced high schoolers...

ONE HOUR SPECIAL. A nice farewell for Cleveland, NBA and the world loves drama.

If he is leaving Vleveland, where is he going? Bulls.

Now I'm curious...

Hey little buddy! Yah - you with the cute little monkey face! If I put my yellow hat on and ask you to go play in traffic, will you do it? You really serve no other purpose around here other than entertainment value, and we'll have more than enough of that tomorrow the the Princess Puke-a-Palooza and what not... So do us all a favor, would you? Scram.

lavon james can sign for detroit shocks for all i care or for that matter the phoenix mercury.

GREATEST QUOTE EVER!

From Adrian Woj over at Yahoo sports about LeBronze:

"now they're turning LeBron into Mr. July after LeBron didn’t have the stomach to be Mr. June"

BTW, I wonder why he's doing the show in Connecticut 45 minutes from MSG....

MM,

Anything brewing on the Lakers front? Fisher? Blake signing tomorrow? Anyone else joining the Lakers? Any reaction from Laker coaches or players regarding LeBron's announcement, Wade/Bosh hookup or Boozer the Bull? It's just a little too quiet for me regarding our Lakers.

Keep up the great work though.

After tomorrow - would love to see a "how does the Western conference shape up" post.

I have to say, it's looking pretty good with the core Lakers team. Yes, everyone's a year older across the board, but I would love to get a sense of what everyone else here sees/thinks.

I think in no particular order:

1. Jazz = minus a big, weaker
2. Suns = minus a big and #1 scorer, much weaker
3. Blazers = we shall see how long Oden's 40 year old legs last
4. Spurs = didn't really upgrade, older and maybe Tony Parker is going East
5. OKC = Durant got his extension but don't think they get past 1st round
6. Dallas = wildcard - should be good now that they will be together a full season - but still think Lakers are better
7. Houston - we have a problem
8. Thugs - still need a get out of jail free card.
9. All the rest........

Am I missing anything? Looks like the Eastern Conf. desperados got a whole bunch of random all-stars and are spending a lot of $$$. But they will all have to slug it out come June. Only 1 team comes out of the East. Have fun guys....

Hands down - Lakers have to be the favorite (at least mine) and I imagine a whole lot of my fellow LAT blog friends.

Cheers all - PLG

Regarding the west, the Nuggets didn't lose anyone did they?
I would guess them, Mavs and OKC be the top challengers.

While not likely especially with the CBA coming next year, wouldn't it be something if LBJ signed just a 1 yr contract so he could do it all again next year!

PLG,

Nice post. The biggest concerns for the Lakers is health and a deeper, more productive bench. I would love to see a post on the Western Conference teams and what they're doing this offseason since the LEastern Conference has obviously garnered all the attention with their splashy moves.

For all the moves being made, injuries are always a factor. Wade, Stoudemire and Boozer have a history of injuries, so nothing's a given no matter how good it looks on paper.

There are a lot of tweets that LeBron is heading to New York. If so, that's a shocker and a choice that makes us the favorites again next year.

But then there's rumors that it's Miami or Cleveland...

Don't ask me.

Wes

If there any financial folks (traders) who play the markets here, this is an interesting tidbit.

"For sports fans, especially Cav fans, there was an interesting trade in Madison Square Garden (MSG) where a July 20 - 22.5 strangle was apparently purchased for $1.10 2000 times. King James in NYC, if the Knicks do not get him this hurts their organization but the option strategist could potentially win either way."

MSG was up over 6% today on higher than normal volume.
Someone in the know?

Art:

My take on the Thugs: Kenyon - 2x microfracture plus knee surgery this Summer and 32 years old. Eeks.

Birdman - knee surgery as well - patella tear.

Think they were also really despondent when Coach Karl had to cut his season short.

Hopefully, they will be competitive but don't think they are the same as 2008 group.

PLG

LeBron would be crazy to pass on Chicago now.

Wes

Please add me to the suburban caravan:

Don't Blame Del Harris!

DBDH!

CURIOUS:

How to measure how miserable and insecure someone must be to sit on a blog and pathetically be such a tool?

Ted Shackleford (Man with the Yellow Hat)

As how to measure greatness in the NBA, that is easy;

1)How many rings do you have?
2)How many Finals MVP’s do you have?

If the answer is more than one; well then that is greatness!

If the answer is none; well then you must be humble!

should be a more entertaining finals... netherlands vs germany wouldve been like spurs vs detroit finals.. brazil being lakers already eliminated

THAT'S MY MAN, OUTSTANDING!!!!

LEWSTRS,

>>> $475-$575 per kid...How can the poor families afford that...

Families of prospective pro athletes usually have incredible support systems within their relatives, friends, neighbors, and other benefactors.

The value of a Kobe Bryant camp is ten times those amounts, so it's really a bargain and Kobe likely doesn't break even when you consider the associated costs of mounting the camp.

PLG,

Yeah, without Karl it's just not the same for them, but maybe they'll go on a mission for him.
Nah, they shoulda done that last year.

Ok then, that leaves the Mavs and OKC.
I like that OKC team, depends how they mature and improve.

Art, that's a very good speculation move. The people will know that, and tomorrow they will think LeBroker will go to NY, the stocks will go up tomorrow, and the 1st buyer will sell at the end of the day, making a big -if not an enormous- amount of money. It doesn't matter if he goes to NY or not, the profit will be awesome for one day.

Art - that's awesome. If someone is "in the know" - you can bet there will be an SEC investigation. Perhaps it was Prokhorov or one of LBJ's minions?

Hey guys we got a new post up

Nemaia Faletogo - Nothing to report on the Lakers front. But we'll be sure to tell you once stuff happens.

MrNano,

Yep, my thoughts too, though I wish I thought of it yesterday :)
