Highlighting Shannon Brown's dunks

The good news regarding Shannon Brown entails Mitch Kupchak's optimism that the Lakers will reach a deal and re-sign him. The bad news regarding Brown entails that there's no noise beyond crickets, as he's had to wait while the Lakers assemble their roster. Yet even with the free agent signings of Matt Barnes, Steve Blake and Theo Ratliff, Kupchak expects that the high-profile dunker will remain a Laker. I view that as a good move should it happen, though I'll admit I wonder how the minutes will be allocated given the off-season additions. But that's a topic for another day.

While Laker fans wait for the news to happen, they can at least enjoy the memorable dunks Brown has entertained them with for the past two seasons. It's not something Brown strictly wants to be known for and he wants to develop more parts to his game. And he quickly found out he couldn't channel those highlight reels into the 2010 NBA Dunk Contest. But hey, he'll admit the slams have given him a high profile. Hence, LetShannonDunk.com.

Okay, back to Bynum...

hobbitmage - The clown reference was connected to the mascot talk and I was kidding. Not sure why coming to an understanding between peers is a waste of time. I think Bynum is a true 7 footer who has good post moves, a soft touch on the ball, the ability to knock down free throws, improving defense and heart. He is still a kid with a huge upside. He also has a history of injuries which will derail his career if they continue to repeat themselves. Do you disagree with any of the above? I'm really interested and will keep an open mind. There isn't much else to talk about this time of year anyway (besides the occasional meltdown of certain bloggers with Wilt Chamberlain like prowess with women).

I really liked the Laker DVD post. Maybe someone can break the law and burn me a copy.

Chares--where your been? Were you here for this championship run? I don't remember you here. How's the knee or whatever? Has it healed yet?

And I must say, I LOVED "The Road." Great movie. I don;t know if I could have sat thru it in a theatre (not a criteria I judge films on), but on DVD, as I'm working on my bagel business (yeah baby, New York and Montrea styles!) I watched it repeatedly this weekend and found it fascinating even on repeated viewings. And the second to last shot, very moving.

Go Lakers.

Wes

KobeMVP888,

I apologize that I wasn't able to respond to your question regarding Caracter during the chat, as I had to wrap up some things at work. The reason Caracter really tumbled in the draft is because of his past transgressions, character and weight issues. Many believed that he has great talent and potential, but was viewed as to great a risk and headache. However, Caracter showed determination, maturity, focus and a work ethic that he hadn't shown before by shedding 30+ lbs prior to the draft. It wasn't that the Lakers saw talent that other scouts and teams didn't see, its just the Lakers were in a good position to gamble on him in a low risk, high reward kind of way. Caracter then went out and displayed in summer league the kind of talent he was highly touted for coming out of high school into college.

I read an article sometime ago that when he and another highly sought after high school phenom, Greg Olden played one on one, Caracter outplayed and dominated him in the post. Caracter is very crafty and skillful in the post and I would like to see how he does against our big men in practice, because he seems to have a knack for being able to get his shot over and against bigger guys. He may seem undersized at 6'9, but he makes up for it by being willing to bang, be physical and get after it on the boards. He seems to have finally gotten his act together and appears primed to make the most of this opportunity. Nothing is guaranteed of course, but if he plays like where he was projected and should've been drafted as oppose to where he was drafted, then we may ourselves a real gem

O.K. Wes. I wasn't sure about renting "The Road but since you loved it in capital letters, I'm downloading it now.. sometimes I'm not sure technology has improved the quality of life, but right now a satellite is feeding a movie into my computer (and I live in the middle of nowhere so there's no Blockbuster here).

I just finished "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" by Salman Rushdie and I LOVED that book, so I'm recommending something back to you...

I did it again... forgot to change my handle back..

I will be taking over for MM while he is gone on vacation.

For you to have uninterrupted posting I will need you to send me your credit card number.

Please remitt to:

Don't forget to add the security code on the back. (Hint: If you don't have a credit card. You can use your parents CC which is normally found in their purse or wallet)

Your CC will not be charged. Its for file purposes only.

FCM goes to the 'saved for late July file,' and hits it. Next up I suppose the greatest hits of Ron Artest, followed by a few highlight reels of Kobe from the Afro days. For those interested in shorter viewing, you can catch 'letlukewaltondunk.com'

hmmm. I just had a lightbulb over my head, let me run over and snag that domain name quickly.

ROFLMFAO!!!! A FATTY CLASSIC!!!! OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!

1) Loved the Shannon Brown highlights.

2) On some of his dunks, it looks like someone is hitting the Turbo button on a video game. Ridiculous.

3) He has enormous hands. Palms the ball like it's a grapefruit.

4) His dunks can be momentum-shifting, timeout-inducing, crowd-awakening moments. This isn't something that can necessarily be quantified so it's hard to know just how much it helps the team, but I would think it has some value, much in the way that Derek Fisher's leadership cannot be quantified but clearly has value.

5) I hope we bring him back at a reasonable price. I originally said 3 years/8.5 million, but I'm doubting he'll even command that now that the market is drying up. Looks like the Lakers may get another bargain!

Fatty,
I have some topics i want to talk with you. E-mail me at:

ROFLMAO!! OH SWEET JESUS! STOP THIS! STOP THIS I SAY! FATTY SEE WHAT YOU'VE DONE! WAHAHAHAHHAHHAHA!

It'd be nice to get another guard on the roster. Brown has had some mental lapses on both sides of the ball but he is familiar with the offence, athletic, decent outside shooter, and provides momentum changing dunks. I’d say he’s worth the $2+mill that he opted out of…

(I would add Mamba24's Roll Call...but we have people with sore fingers from scrolling)

I believe MK is waiting to see if he will sign Ebanks and Caracter first. Then he will decide on Shannon Brown. He is a nice addition to the team and may come at a price tag of about of 2.5M a year. Three years at 8M is my guess. That would be a good price.
He may play less 1 and more 2, which is more fitting for him, thanks to Blake.

Noah,

I really, really love the music by Nick Cave. He's one of my favorite songwriters, and he wrote probably the best western screenplay in 25 years in "The Proposition."

"The Road" is definately a guys film. There's not really a single strong female character in the entire movie. But it's one of the best man vs nature / Man vs man films I've seen in a long time. And look for the second to the last shot. I love it. But it's a long film. With lots of cannibals.

KobeMVP/Hogan - thanks and I'm just trying to find some common ground between the "warring" Bynum camps...lol.

Phred - we can agree to disagree on Howard. (But 3 straight 1st team All-NBA is not to shabby for a 24yr old. Anyway its all Love!

Mamba...thanks for setting the record straight on James Brown.

Nemaia - In the words of Cube, "I'm glad we got so many down girls on our team" (on this blog). The difference btw James and Cube song was JB was giving women their props while Cube was dissin YoYo (even though it was all fun). Andrew Bynum or Marc Gasol?

If you are Memphis and you drafted H. Thabeet #2 in the draft, and so far he has been a bust, would you package him on a trade to prove that you gained something out of that pick.
Bynum would be the perfect player for Gasol and Thabeet. Before you start with the No on Thabeet. Keep in mind that he will have a team option at the end of this season.
Marc will be an unrestricted free agent and may look to play elsewhere. So a sign and trade may be possible.

Comparison: Numbers ONLY '09-'10

Gasol 14.6 ppg 9.3 rpg 1.6 bpg 2.4 ast 58 fg% 67 ft%

Bynum 15.0 ppg 8.3 rpg 1.5 bpg 1.1 ast 57 fg% 74 ft%

Food for thought.

BTW I'm not a Bynum Hater, in fact I like him. But I would like to get value for him and not lose a presence in the middle. I would not trade him for a pg or sf.

It's no leeting me space so sorry for the clutter

For a change, here is another news about Lakers. Matt Barnes was talking to Tony Bruno about his conversation with Kobe prior to his joining the Lakers.

http://sportsradiointerviews.com/2010/07/26/matt-barnes-even-though-the-money-wasn%E2%80%99t-the-greatest-option-on-the-table-i-knew-that-i-wanted-to-be-a-laker/

I guess there is something substantial to talk about than going with the never ending adventures of Bynum or jump to lady bloggers to Sasha, to Shannon. When we have nothing to do we engaged in endless speculations, fantasizing, gossips and talk about our personal lives. Can we go back and discuss real news?

Wes

Good. I'll rent "The Proposition" also. Yea itunes. I see he also wrote the score so I can check out his music at the same time. I'm a huge fan of Mark Knopfler's film scores.

Delonte West will be waived by Minnie......

I have an idea that may be just crazy enough to work.

We sign West, (he brings Lebron's mom with him, they are an item)

Try and picture this. When we play Miami in the Finals she sits in the stands and blows kisses to Delonte. It will screw up James's head, he loses concentration, and will tank the games.

Dang it! I love this idea!

SpartanDawg in da house. Definitely bring Shannon back. Okay, he's not the most polished player or have great court awareness, doesn't create much for others and almost made the entire Laker nation go into cardiac arrest when he keep losing Ray Ray in the finals - but he is a scorer, tough player, plays hard and this is LA and Showtime and the Lakers should always have at least one highlight film/game changer.

Im more and more convinced the Lakers and Chris Paul are in play. It makes zero sense to bring back a marginally skilled Guard in Shannon Brown when there is no money and no minutes for him given the Blake and Barnes signings. Unless.....One of them is heading out.

Working the trade machine last night of all the teams Paul originally said he wanted to be traded to only the Lakers have the pieces to make it happen with east. Odom and Sasha = Paul. Bynum = Paul. Odom and Blake = Paul. No other trading partner has a quality player and a guard they can send back in return.......other than the Lakers.

Losing Sasha would explain signing Brown.

Well, I think we can all agree that whatever Andrew Bynum may or may not be, he is no Hasheem Thabeet. Now there’s a guy who could use Kareem as a mentor.

LRob- You will possibly be happy to know that I wrote a long and not particularly exciting bit on Dwight Howard vs Andrew Bynum but decided not to post it, as it didn’t really go anywhere and was mostly a regurgitation of old arguments, (so it would have fit in here fine, but it didn’t add anything.)

I did use the sentence ‘If there was a Magic Basketball Fairy who could wave
a magic ‘Isn’t and never was injured’ wand at Bynum, that would be an interesting discussion.’ Which I think shouldn’t be entirely abandoned.

Yeah, the phrase ‘Hasheem, Kareem, Kareem, Hasheem’ also occurred to me, but I suppose in many parts of the world, those aren’t exactly unusual names, so it would be about as funny as saying ‘John, Don, Don, John'

or something. Beats me, really.

Lewstrs...is there a part 5?

"I guess there is something substantial to talk about than going with the never ending adventures of Bynum or jump to lady bloggers to Sasha, to Shannon. Edwin, I know I have only been around here for a few years, but can you tell me when exactly this golden age of 'discussing real news' was?

REPOST
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Open letter to Mitch Kupchak:
On behalf of Lakers Nation...PLEASE...find a way to bring Shannon Brown back to the Purple & Gold.
Back when Julius Erving was in his prime, one of the "Dr. J Rules" (which came out way before the Jordan Rules) was that the opposing team should call timeout if Dr. J dunked 2x in a row, because those dunks would FIRE-UP the frenzied crowd and create an absolute tsunami of momentum that would sweep the Sixers onto victory.
Shannon is obviously not Julius Erving. But, what he brings to the table is the same sort of EXCITING sky-walking athleticism that can electrify the Staples Center crowd, and more importantly, put that "Dr. J" kind of momentum-building or momentum-shifting charge into his own team!
How valuable is that? Have we not seen how the cumulative effect of adding together, seemingly small momentum-building plays, ultimately leads to winning the biggest games?
Yes, the NBA is a business, but it is also athletic entertainment at the highest level. Dr. Buss knows this well. He has been in the vanguard of the merge/meld between sports and entertainment for as long as he has owned the Lakers.
Shannon was injured and not at his best towards the end of last season. He deserves a chance to show how much his game has grown, and how good he really can be with more time on the court, in the absence of Farmar.
Don't forget, it takes time for a new player to assimilate into The Triangle offense. The Lakers and Brown have already invested several years of time together. Please don't give up on him now.
Picture Shannon streaking down the sideline, receiving a perfect lob pass from Steve Blake, and throwing it down over the head of some quivering Celtic. Imagine how that would fire-up the Staples crowd and his teammates.
Actually, we don't have to. He has already done such high-flying things numerous times. We NEED his youth and athleticism as the rest of the squad gets older. Please give him a chance to show what else he can do.
Please bring back Shannon Brown.
P & G R
Jerry Buss bucks stopped with Shannon. No Chris Paul in the horizon in any shape or form or even rumors. That is an old news. He will not come to the Lakers because Bynum and LO are untouchables. He will not go to NY Knicks because they have nobody to trade with. The last dice was Magic but they are reluctant to change their two reliable PG and go for someone who is also expensive. M'ricks are interested but Paul did not include Cuban's team. So as far as Lakers are concerned, CP3 is like a comet that appeared in our horizon now no longer visible to Laker fans.
What is the importance of Shannon Brown? He is a game changer, entertainer, no longer plying with Farmar, can play 1, 2 and 3. He subbed Artest during the Finals, tho' defended RA instead PP. He is the overall utility guy, PJ should ask him to go for the hoop this season and stop moonlighting with Kobe by going slow in the triangle formation. SB should be aggressive and go for the hoop, that's what fans want him to be, a player who earned only 2.1M should fly like Kobe who gets 24M for his talents.
Noah,
Yep. "The Proposition" is so good because it shows how mean and nasty the Austrailian wild west really was. All the characters are fantastic and John Hurt has one of his best roles of all time. It's really, really violent though. Nice Cave wrote the script and did the music. He's really, really talanted. His "Murder Ballads" is the best and most alluring collection of murder ballads that I've ever heard. Then his next album, "The Boatman's Call" is this great meditation on love/existentialism/God. Here's "Into my Arms" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS4gRmvvDsU
Wes
Man, the more I read about Chris Paul's situation (and I used to like the guy), getting in bed with Lebron's people (and I was hearing some of the skuttlebutt when I was over at CAA the other day), asking for a trade before his contract is up, coupling that with players "colluding" to form superteams, the more it feels like we're on the verge of Don Kingism, or the WWF. I mean, who's to say Lebron isn't trying to "script" his way into the finals - since he can't win any other way, obviously. "Hey, Chris... you let me win one, I'll let you win one."
I'm glad there are Buss' & Phil's and Kobe's in the world.
Fatty, i attended your associates as you requested, and they were very kind with me too. But they were a little weird. They asked me if i could take them to swim with the fishes, so i took them. Before they went in to the sea they gave me your adress if i wanted to visit you. Maybe i will.
Attentive to your commentaries,
MrNano
`
Hobbitmage – I much prefer good conversation. To answer your question, if Drew is still at 14/8 in 3 years then no, he hasn’t fulfilled my expectations. In the near term I’d be happy with 14/8/2/2 for an entire year and that would make him good. What leads me to believe that he will do better than that was how he was playing before each of his last two injuries, including his development on the defensive side of the ball, and his grit in playing through the pain in the playoffs. Numbers wise what would be “great”? Hard to say and I agree numbers don't tell the whole tale, but playing on this team with the weapons we have, I’d say something like a consistent 20/11/2.5blks with the points increasing over the years as he develops and Kobe and/or Pau decline. More than the numbers I just want to see the kid kick the hell out of the opposition. I think he has it in him, but we'll see.
`
Putting aside my expectations can we agree that if he stays healthy it would be reasonable to expect 20/10 this year? 18/10? I think he was averaging more than that before the knee blew up…. Again.
Shannon Brown will be re-signed as indicated by Mitch.
Machine's time will be limited
Machine will not be happy.
Buss will be happy about getting an expiring contract of his books.
------------
Nem,
Is it unfair? In one way yes especially considering Bynum's injury. That being said if Shaq was here with Gasol and Kobe the scoring will be like this:
Bryant: 25-6ppg
O'Neal: 22ppg
Gasol: 13-14ppg.
(These are rough estimates. These were similar numbers that O'Neal/Bryant got when two other ball dominant people Payton and Malone came to LA)
Before the "see that's what we are taking about Bynum's production" quote comes, again Shaq will always be 10x the player Bynum is (attitude wise goes to Bynum for now). The dominance of Shaq would usurped Gasol's game to the point where Gasol would be a role player himself. In other words: if people claimed Bynum was as good as he was then he would have already usurped Gasol as the scoring option.
That's why. If they think he is good as they think he is...fine let Bynum AVERAGE near what Shaq got in the Finals. Unfair yes but they want to prop him to being "Baby Shaq" then well you have to live up to it.
Kinda like the "Like Mike" thing. Kobe didn't want it but people compared him to Mike. Unlike the rest of the pretenders Kobe is the best and has succeeded as Mike's heir (over LeQuit).
But then again there's always the traditional NBA crowd who will always say he isn't comparable to Mike and let's not open that can of worms.
re: Bynum. I agree with your list of attributes up to "huge upside". I am not
saying he doesn't. I'm saying I don't know what "huge upside" actually means.
Right now, he's doing ~ 14/8. What does "huge upside" translate to in
Hobbitmage that's 15 and 8. He jumped a full point from his 08-09 production...wonder why the Beast is still in "always next year" kinda reminds me of Chicago Cub fans (no offense though you Cub fans though still haven't won a title since like 101 and counting?).
It's ironic KobeMPV88 that you tell when Bynum about "getting back into transition" when Bynum before Game 3 of the WCF against Phoenix "I'm excited to face Boston" when NO OTHER Laker would open their mouth and Phil stated that Bynum had a brain fart. Well the Lakers had a tough 6 game series against Phoenix and on that same day StoudeWHINER blew up on the Lakers for 42 points....not to mention the previous year Bynum was complaining about his PT while Jackson was responding to "He better play better defense" in the Denver after Phil benched Bynum in Game 2 of that series after Bynum failed to get back to defense after he was annoyed he didn't get the ball (which ended up being a 3 point play by Nene which he drew the foul on Kobe even though Nene wasn't his man).
So for tonight I'm going to do another comparison. Not about Bynum-Howard this time because I already proved that Howard>>>>Bynum and I won't be comparing him to the Diesel in his prime because of all the complaining. No what I will do is compare Bynum to the current centers of the league and using 82games.com's ratings will determine how good ole Bynum fares to even out the competition.
And to that poster who said Kendrick Perkins is the best defensive center in the league.....obviously you hate Dwight so much. Perkins is good but he isn't the anchor for Boston's defense....ask how the Celtics missed KG's presence in the 09 playoffs against Orlando.
"Im more and more convinced the Lakers and Chris Paul are in play. It makes zero sense to bring back a marginally skilled Guard in Shannon Brown when there is no money and no minutes for him given the Blake and Barnes signings. Unless.....One of them is heading out."
Not happening unless the Lakers open up to trading Bynum (New Orleans wants something more than Odom whose trade value last season was high because of his expiring contract) AND CP3 demands to be traded to the Lakers.
It has also been reported that CP3 backed of his trade request similarly to what Kobe did in 2007.
@HOGAN… Frustrating isn’t it? It’s like glimpsing another universe or falling down the rabbit hole into a weird nether world where logic has been suspended, contributions ignored, and objectivity lost, where Derek Fisher is a loser, Andrew Bynum a clown, Lamar Odom an dolt, and Pau Gasol a weenie. It’s a bizarro dimension where fans have literally forgotten the Lakers are the two-time NBA champs.
~
Trying to understand or communicate with them is like spitting upwind or talking another language. Their biases are so blatant, their logic so inscrutable, and their conclusions so indefensible that it’s hard to comprehend how they can seriously believe their biased and distorted version of hoops reality. They really think that they know more about running a team than our front office and coaching staff.
~
But pull on a thread and their positions unravel and their house of cards thinking crumbles, exposing their inconclusive stats as flotsam without the weight of real evidence, their sophistic trickery as the craft of a door-to-door salesman, and their boring lengthy “documented” posts easy to scroll on by.
Phred,
The links I just posted are real news because it came from Matt Barnes himself. The blog of today jumps from one speculation to fantasy blogging. I think there is another forum allotted just for that. Just like when you guys get into live chat. As a group, when there is nothing to talk about that is real news, there are the endless debates of a game 30 years ago, a viewpoint vs another views? Only Mark Medina is smiling to have the blog rolling when the high school debaters are on the roll. Nobody want to say STOP, it keeps on going and going until it becomes a dead issue. Is it not nice if we deal on real news like Session and West trade? Well, of course there are some bloggers who come to Lakers Blog for another objective to engage in socials and personal witch hunting.
Delonte West will be waived by Minnie......
I have an idea that may be just crazy enough to work.
We sign West, (he brings Lebron's mom with him, they are an item)
Try and picture this. When we play Miami in the Finals she sits in the stands and blows kisses to Delonte. It will screw up James's head, he loses concentration, and will tank the games.
Dang it! I love this idea!
YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!!!!
"Putting aside my expectations can we agree that if he stays healthy it would be reasonable to expect 20/10 this year? 18/10? I think he was averaging more than that before the knee blew up…. Again."
Nope. Not realistic unless Kobe gives up the ball (do you really expect him to??)
18 and 10 Hogan was his numbers WITHOUT Gasol (though we were dead last in defensive rebounding rate because of his constant running down to the other end of the court to gain early position instead of going for rebounds consistently).
And in March Bynum was averaging 15 and 9 which was consistent with his season average last year (and it wasn't the knee that gave out it was his achilles tendon which has *nothing* to do with the knee).
Onto the project of Bynum comparisons to fellow centers not named Dwight Howard.
And here, before I retire for the evening, is the great theme song by Nick Cave for "The Road."
No thanks Fatty. No Laker fans want Delonte West to be hanging out with Kobe's mom. Last thing we need is Kobe to be distracted because a teammate was sleeping with his mother. Besides as talented as Delonte is (he's actually not bad) do we really want more drama of having a bi-polar, gun carrying dude? Carrying guns is even more crazy than our crazy Ron Artest.
@FATTY… I got to tell you that your two posts for tonight were solid gold. The Nigerians have nothing on Arizonians. LOL. Just visualizing LeBron’s mom behind the Lakers bench wearing a purple and gold Delonte West jersey would define precious. I’m going to read them again right now.
Fatty… who should be writing for MM.
And there are bloggers who are kibitzers on the side like FARSIDE. I remember this smart alec who kept on intruding on our conversations with our visitors leprechauns. Just because we call them leprechauns we could not talk civil with them. Yes I talked to Justa about personal travel or Art FL about experience in Florida or to Humanomaly about past experiences because there is nothing to talk about. Instead of engaging in never endless debates or be discourteous to another Laker fan just like what you are doing, we prefer to talked to our real experience in the most gentle way. Did we insult anyone for discussing those topics? If you read this blog how this one particular blogger dissed those lady bloggers, well we don't do that here. Therefore, it is best to go back to Lakers talk where this blog really belonged. We have no appetite to communicate to type of smart alecky Lakers fans like you.
KB- You are so pessimistic about Bynum that you don't believe that he can average 3 more points and 2 more boards a game?! Come on man, really! 18/10 is the olive branch...
Wow, I guess I missed out on something today.........Maybe it was a good idea I didn't see what was written,cause being the grandma of the group I probably wouldn't have liked it. Thanks Lewstrs for including everyone of us on your blogs, I really enjoy them and it's nice to be part of the LAKER family. Mamba24, thanks for sticking up for the women and I do believe it's time for this season to start. Hope we sign Shannon and the two draft picks.
Edwin- well, I was going to consider carefully responding to that, possibly letting you take a few minutes of introspection or meta analysis or what have you, before I replied. Or possibly not replying at all, since you successfully managed to dismiss virtually everything about this blog that makes it what it is with a simple ‘not real news,’ and I’m not sure I can really debate that, since the discussion itself would violate your standards of what proper blog commenting should consist.
Then FARSIDE kind of took the trouble of pointing out one of the potential hypocrisies in your argument, but rather rudely, as I don’t know what your age or gender has to do with anything, and frankly, that might be a bit of an argument against including personal information in your comments. But I think I can respond with more of the respect you deserve for your dedication to this blog.
I don’t think you really believe this blog should be nothing more than three posted articles this summer reading ‘Lakers sign Steve Blake’ ‘Lakers resign Derek Fisher’ ‘Lakers sign Theo Ratliff/Matt Barnes’ and ‘transcripts of the press conferences dedicated to same.’ I can give you the benefit of the doubt and simply assume you don’t like endlessly re hashing semantics about what ‘dominance’ means with regard to Andrew Bynum, random jerks asking female bloggers they don’t know about their personal regions, and anyone conjecturing about possible trades for Chris Paul that won’t happen in a million years. I would be one of the last people to ever criticize someone for engaging in a bit of hyperbole to prove a point, I’ll give you a pass, just let it go.
But then I sort of stop, mid sentence, and think to myself, hey, didn’t Edwin himself just a few short days ago propose a hypothetical trade of Lamar Odom, Sasha Vujacic and Luke Walton for Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor? And hey, doesn’t FAR SIDE sort of have a point, that you in fact did post some comments of an anecdotal nature about your experiences in movie theaters and cheap travel? UPDATE And did you actually, with a straight face, say ‘smart alecky Lakers fans like you?’
Hmm. You know, I think I’m just going to go back to paragraph one and humbly suggest you consider your arguments more carefully next time. Honestly, I think you are one of the great advocates in favor of the unique and admirable nature of this blog, and I often get stirred down in the inky cynical blackness of my heart by your tributes to this community and the Lakers, and I’m not really interested in starting anything inflammatory. Even if I think we all know I could, at this point in the conversation.
I guess I’m just going to say ultimately, that
IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE
GO LAKERS!
Yeah, I do a great 'pompous.' Trying to speak the lingua franca and all. Heh.
I agree with KB on this one. West is seriously sick and appears to be flat out dangerous. Artest however is just the right kind of crazy...
phred - haha you never fail. I wish I thought of your idea. I actually spent part of the afternoon finding the Shannon Brown dunks. But as far as your other suggestions, I'll be sure to work on those right away and file under the stock August posts.
Thanks for the suggestions!
MM
KB- You are so pessimistic about Bynum that you don't believe that he can average 3 more points and 2 more boards a game?! Come on man, really! 18/10 is the olive branch...
Posted by: Hogan | July 26, 2010 at 08:41 PM
Tell Kobe to give up Field Goal ATTEMPTS then we can talk.
This isn't the 1980's when Showtime was at a very face pace where you could score faster (not easier just faster) not to mention the pace of the 80's and early 90's were much faster compared to the pace of today (one of the reasons why hand checking was eliminated to open up the perimeter game much more to get more scoring back up).
You have field goal ATTEMPTS which are a LOT to go around. There's Kobe who still use 20+FGA per game, Gasol who averaged 13 FGA per game and Bynum who got 10 FGA last year.
Not to mention the rest of the team needs some shots from Odom to Artest to Barnes to Blake to Fisher and well to everyone who plays regularly.
An NBA team usually averages around 80 Field Goal Attempts per game. It maxed out to about 86.5 FGA and that was done by Golden State who has the fastest pace.
Kobe takes 1/4 of the total possessions. 20. Then You got Gasol who got 13 so 47 left. Bynum got and will still get around 10 FGA per game so that's 37 shots. Artest got 9.6 about half of them spot up opportunities from either execution of the triangle offense or Kobe finding Artest open (converting them on a consistent clip is another story) so that's about 27 roughly. Odom to continue having his 6th man role got around 10 FGA so that's 17 shots. Fisher got 6.8 FGA I think will go down to 6 FGA so that's 11 shots. And Blake will get around 6 FGA in a back up role (Farmar had roughly the same) so that's 5 shots and that will either go to Shannon or Sasha whoever is the back up guard.
This is why you need to consider FGA instead of saying 18 and 10 and me not being an optimist. I"m just seeing it the way past trends are.
Kobe may not get 21 FGA but he WILL gain 20 FGA per game. He hasn't gone down in FGA ever since 03-04 and that was while playing with Payton Malone and Shaq (and Payton needed the ball to succeed he wasn't really that into the triangle offense and admission he made a couple of times already).
If Scottie Pippen couldn't get the ball out of MJ do you honestly think Kobe will just to let Bynum get more points? No Kobe is going to SCORE then SCORE more and probably again SCORE. That's what a player like him/MJ and even Lebron and Wade make their game.
Take that to the bank. Kobe is going to score. Even KobeMVP888 admitted that Bynum isn't going to score 20ppg here (the real debate is if he was good as Shaq then Shaq would have thrown Gasol backward and usurped second fiddle.....if ever).
That's just scoring Hogan I don't even need to go to rebounds where Odom and Gasol are superior rebounders to Bynum. Not saying that Bynum is TURRIBLE at rebounding (8 is not bad) but the fact that two other good rebounders on the team makes it harder for him at his level to average 10rpg (another reason why Bynum isn't on par with Dwight since Dwight would send Gasol and Odom into single digits the way Superman rebounded)
Mamba24 - I've already thanked others on the live chat today, but since you weren't there I want to thank you for having my back today as well. Much appreciated.
Fatty/MrNano - you guys are hilarious! But Fatty - don't you think those cement shoes will help weigh you down when the floods come? Just askin....:)
wes - I haven't seen The Road, but read the book. I loved it. I hated it. It amazes me that writers can put the reader in a place where they can feel the road beneath their feet, can feel the fear when strangers appear, can themselves live the aftermath of the apocalypse. Amazing. I hated it because it saddens me that this is a vision of what many believe to be our future as a human family. My faith gives me much hope for the future. I only wish others had that as well.
Edwin - thanks for the travel tips. If we can ever save enough money to travel (even though it can be done cheaply lol) or have the time to do it, I'll let you know and you can give me your best money saving, travel tips. I appreciate that!
I rewatched the highlights of Game 6 vs the Thunder. It visually reminded me of Shannon's crazy dunking ability, but also of his limitations as a player. Still - BRING BACK SHANNON. See reign's post - he said it best!! I also was reminded of the tremendous, yet underrated value of Lamar to this team. The man is a defensive machine. Blocks. Rebounds. He was getting it done. We don't win that game if not for LO's performance in the 4th Q. Don't take my word for it. Watch it yourself. Rerun coming up on NBATV in about an hour or so....
Edwin,
>>> When we have nothing to do we engaged in endless speculations, fantasizing, gossips and talk about our personal lives. Can we go back and discuss real news?
Actually, Edwin, I much prefer the former. For examples, Phred's travels to the Northwest, Justa's -- well, everything, Fatty's Cayman Island bank account. And don't forget your daughter's recent wedding.
We're a family. We share across the virtual dinner table. Besides, it's the dog days of summer. When LEWSTR shares a poem, it brightens my day.
Smile.
LRob,
Thanks for the fabulous stuff on James Brown!!! In his own words, "hey, gud god!!!"
FARSIDE,
Thanks for the compliment friend.
Mamba,
I think you forgot to add SHEKOBE to the blog sisterhood. She really needs to be recognized as the progenitor of the LOVE.
Mamba24 - don't forget about Seely_Iggy also - another proud member of the Real Laker Girls!
1st video - 3:17
dribble and DUNK!!!
Phred and Farside,
OK, I'm out. Here is my one request. I'm being courteous with this post. Let us agree to disagree. OKAY. If possible don't reply or mention my handle in any of your posts and I will not mess up with you. You can do whatever you want with others, as long as you don't bother me. In the first place, we never gave you the license to discuss our age or any kind of perception of where we came from. You two are not LakerTom, Mamba24, Jon K, Justa or Humanomaly, if you think PJ old, then I am old. If not, then we are not that old, it is just part of your perception of disrespect to call us "old" and get even. Goodnight.
Rick - lol but I'm not that interesting - take my word for it!
Magic Phil - I say sign Shannon JUST for his dunking ability. The boy gets the crowd & his teammates fired up. You only need a few minutes of court time to do that, right? LOL! BRING BACK TNT LEGS!!!
KB Blitz,
Great post and great points. No argument here. I may be wrong, but I think we both want the same thing, just an injury free, defense-first mentality, glass eating Andrew Bynum without all the bruhaha, right? Or maybe we truly see things a little different, which is fine with me. But that is my expectation for him. We may not agree on everything Blitz, but I do respect you and appreciate your being forthright and candid.
Hogan,
I haven't seen you much around here, but you've made a good impression with your unique insights and perspective. Thank you very much for your thoughts and being involved in some great discussions. Keep em coming.
Wes
I read the book and jumped out the window. Luckily I live in on the first floor!. Couldn't bear the thought of seeing that movie
Nemaia
Your knowledge makes me wonder if you're a stalker...jk
(Noah's mom's gonna be pissed)
Yo Fatty...then we start selling Brotha Red's Donuts, t-shirts and what not at Staples! It's a Win Win Lose!
Have to agree. If this site was all news and stats I would have dumped it long ago. Plenty of those sites around. It's the diversity and great personalities that make this blog great.
BRING SHANNON BACK!!!
Watching game 1 of the Thunder series on NBATV.
Jeff Van Gundy says the Cavs are "the best team and it's not even close".
Makes me chuckle.
LA Lakers 2009-2010 Back-to-Back NBA Champions
HBMatt - that's the best part about watching the replays. The idiocy of these guys is saved for all posterity! HAHAHAHAHA!!!
Edwin Gueco --
First of all, Kamusta Ka, my friend.
Your contributions to This Blog over the years are much appreciated. Although I may not agree with all of your suggestions or opinions, I recognize the spirit in which they are offered...so, it's All Good as they say nowadays.
Personally, I have no problem with differing ideas. None whatsoever. There is a saying that IF another person agrees with you on everything, only ONE person is doing any thinking. So, in that spirit, I welcome dissenting opinions PROVIDED they are presented with some modicum of respect and civility.
That may be an 'old-fashioned' quality that hearkens back to a gentler time, but what's wrong with that? Civility works for me. There is nothing wrong with treating people the way we would like to be treated EVEN IF we feel their behavior is boorish. I think there are some lines that should not be crossed.
(and, btw, for the record HOBBITMAGE, I was the one who told you to 'retract your claws and play nice' with LakerTom for those very reasons)
I look forward to everyone's contributions to this Blog. Some more than others, to be honest. But, nevertheless, we all play a part. Even those obnoxious Trolls who come here to pound their chests and spout garbage give us someone to rally against.
P & G R
Edwin- Sorry you feel that way. So nice of you to ignore the chance to drop to the level of my um, exceedingly courteous, respectful and polite post.
Um, who is 'we,' and at which state office can I apply for this license to do something I wasn't interesting in doing? I think I got to make fun of Laker Tom's age once because he was joking about it, but frankly, I have never referred to any other poster's age, gender, orientation, race, ethnicity, creed, or any of those other zillion things that people get offended by when you talk about them in a pejorative way.
I base my comments on the words and opinions of the people involved, which frankly is the only thing about anybody on here I ever really know.
Oh, and the basic premise of my response to you was that you were possibly being hypocritical, but that didn't bother me any. It wasn't about calling you old. It wasn't even about calling you a pompous crank who is full of crap, which I won't do because I respect you.
I am sorry you won't read my posts. I'll keep reading and enjoying yours, if that's ok with you.
WintonDupree,
LOL! C'mon man, you're better than that!
KB - Okay, good work with those stats and I agree with you that he needs attempts. Be careful with sounding patronizing though, particularly with comments like "and it wasn't the knee that gave out it was his achilles tendon which has *nothing* to do with the knee". That's how people get pissed off. The two injuries I was referring to were his knee injuries. I could have specified, but I didn't. He was scoring and boarding at a good clip before both major knee injuries AND his achilles injury. Assume that if I'm taking the time to write on this blog I know that #1 Drew had an achilles injury and #2 that I know that it didn't have anything to do with his knee!
`
Anyway, rant aside, I think that it is reasonable to expect that Drew's play will demand a couple more attempts a game at a minimum. I also think that he will take rebounds away from Pau/LO or anyone else that is near the basketball. As he develops and the team ages I also think it is reasonable to expect his attempts to approach 20 if he stays healthy. In the near term, like our coaching staff, what I really want him to do is concentrate on defense and have more 7 block games a la game 2 of the finals.
Lakers Back-To-Back NBA Champions Wheaties box is available yet?
Fatty/MrNano- yup, great stuff. Hilarious and just another day on the blog for you guys.
Rick- glad to hear it. I will try to keep y'all entertained with great stories of my exciting trip. Just as a foretaste, I will give you a short summary of the stuff I'm doing tomorrow! I'm driving across western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and most of Montana! WHOOOOO! Some tantalizing excerpts;
"Yup, here I am, driving across a zillion miles of flat, featureless landscape"
"Ok, now I have left my driveway!"
...several hours later
"Yup, still driving through zillion miles of flat, featureless landscape. Oooh, hey, Billings!"
a few more hours
"Wow, this landscape sure is flat and featureless."
"aaaah, that was a nice rest stop. It was nice of that man to offer to work on my car. At least I think that's what he meant by [CENSORED]"
"flat, featureless, ok, almost halfway to Missoula, which is almost halfway there!"
"This here is some flaaaat landscape. And feature…OK ...@#*# THIS! I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE NON REFUNDABLE TICKET, THE 5:30 AM DEPARTURE, THE OOMPA LOOMPA SIZED BONDAGE DEVICE THEY CALL A 'SEAT', THE 16 HOUR LAYOVER IN DENVER, I'M (@#%ING FLYING NEXT TIME!"
"aaaah, more flat featureless landscape. Wonder what the guys on the Laker Blog are talking about? I bet they are talking about whether Andrew Bynum will get 8.3 or 8.4 rebounds next year, and whether this will be 'disappointing,’ ‘adequate’ or ‘disapointingly adequate’ Oh, somebody shoot me now. Um, not you, Mr Montana State Highway patrolman, hey, those are Claritin!’
several hours later;
"You have Dysentery!"
Yeah, seriously, I love to drive, if my car is up to it. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.
Purple & Gold Reign
OK I said goodnight but because you were civil in addressing these issues I will gladly answer your post.
Of course, I always tell everyone that no two people here have the same kind of thinking. We enjoy the diversity, the joking around and also talking about ourselves, socials etc. The only reason why suddenly I became anti-social was because of what I read in previous threads of a particular newbie making a charade of insults against the ladies in this blog. I just want to remind others that we don't encourage those silly things here. Yes, we are entitled to our opinions but we cannot abuse a fellow blogger or bloggers. With regards to smart alecky people, if they don't like me, I also don't care of their sarcasm.
LEWSTRS,
I second Mamba24. OUT FREAKIN STANDING!!!
For those interested, here is some footage of Caracter and Greg Olden battling back in high school as top centers in the country at the time. They're highlighted in the first two and a half minutes with Olden admitting he was completely outplayed by Caracter the year before in their head to head matchup. This time around, they play a little more evenly with Olden's team winning, but afterward Olden states that while Caracter may have won their individual matchup again, he was happy that his team won(props to Olden for his great attitude). Also notice how svelte and great Olden looked back then compared to now. I really hope he recovers from his knee injuries and returns strong. I'm also impressed at how Caracter states that he isn't afraid to attack Olden and shows some good moves in the post and a nice jumper. He has since slimmed down and looks even quicker around the basket today. Enjoy.
@Nemaia Faletogo - Thank you. I've been reading the blog for quite a while and started posting a couple of months ago. I'm glad I did, were else can I get this much Lakers in July!
Edwin - thanks. I appreciate your standing up for what's right regarding that "newbie" and how he was treating me & by extension the other Real Laker Girls. You're a gentleman - thank you.
phred - so - lotsa driving in your future huh? I'd recommend against the percoset & vodka. Just stick to the Pepsi. LOL!
So I'm watching "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" and they were just serving a customer who was ROCKING the purple & gold. Lakers logo front & center baby - YEAH!!!
PGR - Good analysis on the impact of the dunk...yup gotta bring Shannon back.
LakerJ - I like Marc Gasol's game, but not enough to trade Drew for him. Drew length can be intimidating and demoralizing...MGasol is solid but AB can be more of a game changer especially when defenses are focusing so much on KB.
Phred - well you can always save that DHoward dissertation for when NBA news drag to a crawl in a few more weeks...lol
Phred pt 2- I was smiling reading your response to Edwin and my wife asked what was so funny. You truly have a gift with words. Btw...I thought it was all good natured ribbing.
Edwin - I've enjoy your post on a variety of topics from the personal stuff to hardcore hoop analysis. For whatever its worth I think you were being overly sensitive on the comments to Phred.
Nemaia - good stuff on Caracter. He should be a good addition. He looks very good offensively.
Wes - thanks for my intro to Nick Cave. Didn't see the movie but listening to the score I could feel the emotions. Looks like all star cast with Viggo, Duvall and even my man "Omar" from the wire.
Justa,
Now you've made me hungry, gotta grab a bite now. Much love to Lakers fans everywhere!!!
"Wonder what the guys on the Laker Blog are talking about? I bet they are talking about whether Andrew Bynum will get 8.3 or 8.4 rebounds next year, and whether this will be 'disappointing,’ ‘adequate’ or ‘disapointingly adequate’"
`
LOL
Lewstrs- Man I'm know sure where you got you're game, But you got some serious GAME.
Oh, before I forget. Off topic though. For comic book fans on here, what do you think about the Avengers casting and Mark Ruffalo replacing Edward Norton as the Hulk?
Also, which comics and movies are better, DC or Marvel? Just curious, thanks.
FARSIDE,
You're welcome.
Nice link. I hope PJ will go out on a limb and give Caracter a few minutes in the Pau/Bynum/LO/Ratliff rotation. It's a long season and I'd like to see what he can do as a rookie.
justa- I don't even like percocet and vodka. The whisky and ambien is for when I stop for the night, and I hate pepsi.
phred - well I guess there's no accounting for taste. To each his own. Whatever floats your boat. Personally, I think if you hate Pepsi you have to be seriously disturbed, but then I remembered it was you and ... well... it all just makes sense, ya know?
Seriously though, phred. Drive safely so you can come back home and regale us with more stories of just how flat and boring the countryside was. I can't wait!!
LOL!!! It's still all about the love!
:)
nemaia- you can't just ask a simple question, can you?
I liked Ed Norton as the Hulk, i'm not sure about Mark Ruffalo, I figure they are probably going away from the 'haunted cerebral scientist' tone of the Norton movie and more into 'avengers hulk,' although what that might be, since the Hulk was never in the avengers, I don't know. In general, I'm not expecting much for the movie franchise, it will be interesting to see if Captain American can ever carry a major movie. Thor? I have no idea what that is going to look like.
Marvel vs DC? Now that is a question that will take more than one off hand post to reply. that is a serious question there. I'll have to get back to you on that.
Hogan,
Ditto your last post. Caracter seems fearless and I would like to see how he does in practice against the likes of Pau, Bynum, LO and Ratliff! I would also like to see how our other 6'9 rookie, Ebanks does defensively against Kobe, Artest, Barnes and our point guards too. Ebanks can be something special defensively out on the perimeter. I can imagine him harrassing small, quick pgs with his length, quickness and athleticism. I would love to see PJ put Ebanks on guys like Westbrook, Stephen Curry, Monta Ellis, Nash, CP3, Collison, etc even for a few minutes to just blanket them all over the court. It may happen.
Re: Chris Paul. He met with New Orleans management today and is for now playing nice. But the genie is out of the bottle. He said, LA, New York, or Orlando.Why he would want to go to New York is beyond me if his goal is winning since they have nothing. And Orlando doesn't have enough assets to turn around. But if Paul's people really push this, and the Lakers don't look sharp before the all star break no one is untradeable.
Whether you agree with it or not, only the Lakers have contracts and assets that can attract New Orleans interest. Bynum combined with Darren Collison would be pretty ferocious. Frankly Id rather have gotten Collison over Paul. So its very possible.
Orlando doesn't have equal value contracts. And New York doesn't have any basketball assets. So maybe this quiets down for now but I stick to my guns. If Brown is re-signed something else is coming.
Thanks for the info on Caracter, which for the most part I was aware of, but you put in into proper perspective for me. I hope he sticks. I have always wondered why the Lakers never have players on the team who are of the very makeup of players who seem to burn them. Remember how Malik Rose was always a thorn in our side? Guys like Millsap, who is also undersized, have also done well against us, but even last draft we stayed away from DeJuan Blair. Caracter is the same size as the bruising Josh Powell with a lot more potential and a little more weight, so let's see how he comes into camp. We have plenty of length, having added Ratliff, so why not try to develop this guy? Same with Ariza-lite I hope.
Phred,
Thank you very much for what appears to be a serious post from you, LOL. Not saying that you're not ever serious, but that was cool coming from the master of humor, schtick and unabashed rhetoric. I must say that I do agree on your assessment regarding the upcoming Captain America, Thor and Avengers films and the change regarding the Hulk. DC's Green Lantern looks pretty interesting though.
As for the DC/Marvel argument, I agree with you that it's a serious question and perhaps should be tabled until...ummmm, tomorrow?!!! That way maybe it would take some minds off of debating Andrew Bynum all day long, LOL! Thanks again!
