Derek Fisher's stay with the Lakers indicates strong relationship with Kobe Bryant

While Derek Fisher mulled his options, Kobe Bryant reached out to him to make sure he'd eventually choose the Lakers. When Fisher and the Lakers hadn't reached an agreement a week into free agency, Bryant publicly argued the two needed to find a way to find common ground. And when Bryant looked at the possible scenarios heading into July 1, he left it up to General Manager Mitch Kupchak to handle the business before reiterating two things: Phil Jackson needs to stay as head coach if he's healthy enough and Fisher needs to return.

The latter part became official Monday with The Times' Mike Bresnahan and Broderick Turner reporting that Fisher agreed to a three-year deal with a player option in his final season. Although the terms of the agreement haven't been reported yet, Fisher indicated in a statement on his website that "while this may not be the most lucrative contract I've been offered this off season, it is the most valuable." Though Fisher mentioned he "listened to every coach, every general manager, even potential teammates in order to make the right decision," there was one guy Fisher singled out in his statement.

"At the end of the day, there's one person I could not turn away from. Kobe Bryant asked me to stay but supported whatever decision I made," said Fisher, who also received reported interest from Miami, Cleveland, Chicago, Minnesota and New Jersey, though he indicated in his statement there were other options the media didn't report. "He and I have played together for 11 seasons, came into the league together as kids; he has been loyal to me even when others had doubts. We have won five championships together."

It can't be overstated enough how Bryant and Fisher will prove instrumental in the Lakers' quest next season for a three-peat. Looking at the individual accomplishments alone prove impressive enough. Studying how the two work together adds even more significance. Bryant's credentials and the fact that he'll enter the 20010-2011 season with more rest and in better health than he had last season suggests he'll be even more dangerous. Fisher's clutch shots and locker room presence will help keep the team together, particularly when the Lakers go through lulls in focus and complacency during the regular-season grind. Or as Fisher put it in his statement, "I am confident I will continue to lead this team on and off the court. Let the hunt for six begin." But it's the on-court relationship between Bryant and Fisher that will prove even more valuable to the team's pursuit than their individual successes.

Just as Bryant managed to get in Fisher's ear during contract negotiations, Bryant shared during the NBA Finals that Fisher's the only player on the team that he'll truly listen to at all times. No one questions Bryant's desire to win, his skill-set and work ethic, but few have the credibility to privately and publicly question Bryant (just ask Shaq). No one questions Fisher's leadership credentials and professional attitude, but not everyone would go out of his way and emphasize how highly important Fisher has been to the team like Bryant did during free agency.

When I asked Bryant before the playoffs how Fisher's leadership affects the team, Bryant felt guilty calling him a "glue guy," because he's "much more than that," as Bryant put it. Teammates universally respect Bryant's talent and work ethic, but they don't universally like Bryant's gruff exterior and tendency at times to take over games on his own, which actually prompted Fisher to bail Bryant out of a bad shooting night in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Fisher's emphasis on sacrificing and staying positive resonates with most teammates, which helps relay Bryant's message in a different tone. Likewise, when I asked Fisher after the season if Bryant's ability to fight through injuries helped push him along through his third consecutive 82-game season last year even if the two are self-motivated, Fisher agreed and added they both study each other's routines and work ethic. He believed that helped set an example for center Andrew Bynum, who fought through torn cartilage in his right knee for much of the postseason.

During the negotiating process, plenty of fans debated Fisher's worth and wondered whether the Lakers truly needed him for another championship run, particularly after they signed Steve Blake to a four-year, $16-million deal. I had often shared the argument that the Lakers should've offered more to Fisher based on his playoff run and clout in the locker room, adding those qualities couldn't be found anywhere else. Bryant also felt the same way. Thanks partly to their relationship, Fisher opted to turn down offers to Miami and stay on the Lakers presumably for the rest of the 36-year-old's career. And if their history proves anything, it that's the relationship between Bryant and Fisher will be instrumental once again toward a title run.

Said Fisher: "I have decided to continue with Kobe, continue with our teammates and the fans of Los Angeles."

The CARAVAN works again...congrats MM and GREAT JOB ALL...

#17 COMING UP!!!!!

Another Lakers for LIFE!!!
This team makes me proud.

TO: Derek "Obama" Fisher (Kobe calls him "Obama" with the greatest fondness)

You have the deepest Respect, Love, and Admiration of ALL of Lakers Nation. God bless you and your beloved family, Derek.

Make the 2010-2011 season an EPIC one as you, and everyone on this new Lakers squad, takes the floor and the "hunt for six" begins!

If this upcoming season is indeed to be Phil Jackson's swan song, do your absolute best to make it a "grand one" as Coach Jackson called for!

P & G R

Thank you Fish for choosing with your heart! Not just a ferocious competitor and leader on the court, but a gentleman off the court. The Cerebral Big Three of Phil Jackson/Kobe Bryant/Derek Fisher will always make us the team to beat!

KL Beast must be completely depressed. He always used to claim that NOBODY wants to play with Kobe. First Artest expressly came to the Lakers to play with Kobe and now Fisher expressly re-signed with the Lakers to play with Kobe.

HAHAHAHAHA.. what happened to last year when Kblitz, Ouuuch, Phred, staples24, Edwin Gueco called Dfish old, an antique, liability, too old to guard...

Maybe oooouch aka mr stats can go back in to lakers blog archive and bring out the old posts anti Dfish..

If you look up a word "FICKLE" in the webseter you will find the picture of self proclaimed "elder" of the blog Edwin Gueco and rest of the Dfish haters listed above..

Wishy washy fans!!

PG – Derek Fisher, Steve Blake, Free Agent
SG – Kobe Bryant, Sasha Vujacic
SF – Ron Artest, Devin Ebanks, Luke Walton
PF – Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Derrick Caracter
CE – Andrew Bynum, Free Agent
Assuming Fish signs as announced and Ebanks and Caracter make the team as expected,
The Lakers would then have 11 players under contract and would be looking to add another
backup guard and backup center to fill out the 13 man roster. So who’s next on Lakers list?

Great news and slamdunk at Lebron and Pat Riley. The latter are both traitors to their causes because they bit of the hands that fed them.

I remember before when Pat was just a side kicked announcer of Chick and when the opening came up in 1982 when Westhead was fired, Chick was the first guy who Riley to the coaching career. Perhaps, there was symbiotic relationship between Showtime Lakers and Pat Riley, nonetheless it was the Lakers that gave him name of what he is today. However, Pat is willing to coerce Fisher into signing with the Tres Diablos.....yeah where's the money? Well Fisher has already five rings, why would he like another tainted ring acquired from narcissism? The perception here is pure aggrandizement of three young players who violated the rules of NBA in trying to fiddle the teams like a kingmaker, somehow it created a repulsive effect on those teams affected. There is no crime committed but in terms of PR linggo, it has the similarity of OJ Simpson effect....loved by some and cursed by many and until OJ rot in jail, the restive public were not fully satisfied. Therefore, no matter what the trio will achieve, it failed to satisfy the NBA fans and eventually, D'wade and Bosh will be dragged into collusion at the detriment of the teams they used to represent except for the Heat.

One thing. I'm not completely sold that Caracter will make the team yet.

I could see the Lakers re-signing Josh Powell instead.

Caracter has played well in Summer League, but that's Summer League. And both he and Ebanks were more sketchy in today's game. Powell is a known quantity. He would cost twice as much as Caracter, but they'd know exactly what they were getting with him.

At this point, I'd write Ebanks and Caracter on the roster, but I'd write Caracter's name in pencil.

Don't mean to be greedy, Mitch, but would love to see Shannon back.

You can always use more youth and athleticism.

Seemed like he was just gettin' the hang of defensive angles and where to be in the triangle.

Thanks, after that, take the rest of the summer off.

Now that the business of Fisher has been concluded.......

We absolutely, positively, must limit his minutes, especially during the regular season. Playing him too many minutes lead to his shooting the ball inconsistently.

Learn from the Nash adjustments the Suns made. Two years ago, not having a good back up, they played Nash way too many minutes and his shooting went down, especially in the 4th.

This last year, they limited his minutes, no matter the situation, while the back ups learned to play better in the system. It meant losing some regular season games, but the 2nd team improved and were then playoff ready.

It also allowed Nash to have better legs late in the game and his shot became more reliable.

I know it sounds simple, but I'm willing to give Blake some learning on the job training, even if it means losing a couple of games.

Save the minutes, save the legs, save the defense of our Title.

Bring Shannon Back......Bandwagon!

Bring Shannon Back......Bandwagon!

I am not wishy washy in declaring Derek Fisher is old but wise. Not all old are bad because they are experienced. Not all antique are bad because it belongs to the age of antiquities. Unfortunately, the wishy washy poster could not grasp the message because he is too shallow.

Did I not say that Fisher should be rested more during the season, that's the condition of being paid less to play less. Reserve him for the playoffs or perhaps in the last quarter but don't use him as your everyday workhorse. Fisher is compared to Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, he is there to teach and transfer knowledge.

Again, wishy-washy when someone is referred as old, it doesn't mean it is bad.

BTW,Why don't you give your true name or true handle rather than hide in several handles using how to cheat on the technology because you lack conviction, integrity therefore you hide and attack just like a termite in the dark.

Friends, Laker Fans, Countrymen, lend me your ears;

I come to praise Fish, not to bury him;
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones,
So let it be with Fish ... The noble Kobe
Hath told you Fish was valuable:

It is so, it is a righteous truth,
And righteously hath Fish responded ...
Here, under leave of Kobe and the rest,
(For Kobe is an honourable man;
So are they all; all honourable men)
Come I to speak in Fish's behalf ...

He is our friend, faithful and just:
And Kobe says he was valuable;
And Kobe is an honourable man….
He hath brought many rings home to Los Angeles,
Whose championships did the general coffers fill:

Did this in Fish seem valuable?
When he won Game 3, Fish hath wept:
And who be made of sterner stuff:
And Kobe says he was valuable;
And Kobe is an honourable man.

You all did see that on the internet
Buss thrice presented him a contract,
Which he did thrice accept: was this valuable?
Yes, Kobe says he is valuable;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Kobe spoke,
Here I am to speak what Kobe knows.

You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then to cheer for him?
Those who jeer the Fish, your heart has fled to brutish beasts,
And they have lost their reason…. Bear with me;
My heart is there with Fish,
And I must pause till it come back to me...

Bring Shannon Back......Bandwagon!

Derek Fisher makes Kobe Bryant better.

There are three people who make Kobe Bryant better: Derek Fisher, Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant. That's it.

It's a big deal.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

Well, this means we have or PG situation taken care, and we have our SG taken care of.

Fish and Blake are too heady and aggresive players who will make a nice 1/2 tandem. They can both hit the 3 shot and they both won't back down from physical play.

At SG, we have Kobe of course, and please, lets give Sasha a chance. The guy has proven that he can hit the clutch shot (fts and otherwise), and he is, at least, a pesky defender. He has a good work ethic and he can stretch the floor. With more playing time and confidence, Sasha can be a tremendous asset to this team.

We now need to get some help at the Center position. I don't like relying on Lamar to perform there. I like Lamar at the 3 or 4 instead. So, the Lakers need to invest their time/money into finding a quality VET center who can soak up some fouls and perform in case Bynum goes down with an injury (yet again).

I don't know who's really out there, but I think one Shaq O'Neil is a free agent...

(In response to your earlier response to my rant), I share with you this...

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

Caracter and Ebanks are clearly the standouts and best players on our summer league team by a wide margin. The other guys play hard, but just don't have it. Everyone played wild, sloppy and out of control today against the Knicks. They didn't run the offense efficiently at all today and were careless and sloppy with ball, including Caracter(8 turnovers)and Ebanks.

Caracter is virtually unstoppable in the post, can basically get whatever he wants in the paint and has a variety of posts with the ability to finish with either hand. He seems like a natural around the basket and is able to get his shot over bigger guys. He's also a pretty good rebounder as he's posted 3 double doubles in 3 games. But, on the flip side, he commits silly fouls by reaching or pushing off and he turns the ball over too much. He definitely needs to work on his defense and cut down on fouls and turnovers. Man, if this guy had the mean streak of say, Charles Barkley or Karl Malone, he'd be the best PF in this draft hands down. Caracter's offense seems to be effortless and smooth, but he seems to lose focus at times and has lapses on defense. He's hustling out there and is aggressive, but I'd like to see him settle down more, take his time, punish people in the post or make nice passes to the perimeter shooter or someone cutting to the basket. Right now he's been more impressive than the other bigs selected before him. We'll see how he does against Cousins tomorrow and then DeJuan Blair after that.

Ebanks wasn't as aggressive today as he was the first two games. He had a couple of layups blocked today at the rim and just seemed to have an off day today. He was also gambling and roaming a little too much on defense as well. But, he attack the basket at times and played on the ball defense a little better today. I expect him to bounce back in the next two games as well.

I wasn't really impressed with anyone else on the squad. No one could make a jump shot today to save their lives and they just seemed disjointed in running the offense. Other than Ebanks, they other guys failed to get the ball inside to Caracter, or settled for jump shots that missed badly. I find it kinda hard to fathom how some of these guards(like Jabber and Strawberry)have played for several years and still haven't developed an outside shot, especially if they claimed to have worked on that part of their game. Hopefully, they would take some lessons or tips from their coach, the rifleman, Chuck Person. They commentators said during the broadcast that Person was hitting 3's from 26ft out before the game. Gerald Green is also a disappointment.

great great news and a big relief.

my favorite play of the finals - dfish going coast to coast past 4 celtics in game 3 for a layup and free throw. he won that game with his 10 points in the 4th quarter.

Bad news...I had to sit in the Dentist office for 2 hours...

Great news...I get out and find out the Lakers have resigned Fish...

That trumps the day...

Now time for a Lortab and a shot of Jack, coke back...

Go Lakeshow!!!

I want to see Blake and Odom on the floor together.

There's ONE more player out there--a veteran--we need to come off the bench. I can feel it in my gut. One more guy. That's all we need. We need THAT guy so we can keep the bench on the floor longer and protect our starters from injury. He's out there.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

That's what camaraderie is all about! I'm glad the Big Fish's longtime bond with the Mamba made him decide to stay! Ready for the 3-peat, we're just getting started baby!

Nemaia Faletogo,

I also saw their first game and very much impressed. However, I don't understand how they lost against the Detroit in the last quarter. I'm sure you know what I'm driving at, that talented players hate to lose even at the park or in any league. Somehow, they control the game, manage the time and lastly DEFEND the lead. I'm just concern about good habits at the Summer League is carried over in advanced stages. Well, Chuck Person may be a bad coach too.

Art-FL Laker Fan....Very, very nice, sir!!

It's great comments like that one that make this blog special. Such imagination and wit!! Kudos, sir!!

Tend to agree with you on Sasha, at least give him a real chance.

No way Kobe lets Shaq return. Heck, I would have assigned Shaq's old #34 to M'benga these past few years.

Very well done my friend!

"Now time for a Lortab and a shot of Jack, coke back..."

I'd drop the coke back.

No wonder you have teeth problems. Cola contains phosphoric acid and phosphoric acid loves to rob your enamel and bones of calcium, thus making them brittle and more prone to decay.

Jack? No phosphoric acid. Coca-cola? Phosphoric acid.

Stick with the good stuff.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Sure would like to have UPS back, but really would like Miller, but I guess that's not possible?

I'm just thinking that if we have a super shooter from 3, we will be unbeatable.

Great news obviously and great that Kobe got involved and 'helped him'.But it does irritate me that while everyone else is expected to sacrifice money...Kobe is making a fortune this season...30 million or something? How can you accept 30 million dollars and then insist that a player is kept? Why is a guy like Derek Fisher turning down 'considerably more money' to play for the lakers when he should be getting offers for more than he is worth from them at this can Kobe and everyone else talk about his intangibles and then he doesn't get offered a fair deal becasue the lakers don't have the money because Kobe is taking up half the salary cap?
I'm sorry I just don't get it.I love Kobe but he should have taken less money like everybody else...and if he didn't he should keep his mouth shut when it comes to signing free agents...even if he did help broker a better deal for Fisher in this all still kinda feels icky becasue if it wasn't for his ridiculous salary the lakers would have been able to offer Fisher a bigger deal in the first place.I'm sure they would have loved to.
Sorry to rain on the parade and if anyone has some information that can lead me to a different line of thinking I'd appreciate it..

I love Shannon Brown. Love his attitude. Love his athleticism. But he lacks a stoic leadership quality on the floor. I think Miller would be more apt to bring that.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

I like your takes on Ebanks and Character. I have high hopes for them as well.

Hey Guys !

Great news !! The deal is probably a year too long but it doesn't matter at the moment.Fish is back !

Jon K,

Agreed. Any possible way to get Miller? Sign and trade Sasha? That's about it isn't it?

I'm no NBA financial whiz, but I would like to see Shannon Brown back with the team, if it's economically feasible. I think he still has an upside and that his game was compromised this spring by his hand injury. Fully healthy, I think he has a lot to offer. More than Raja Bell, IMO. Back up center...MBenga or Kwame Brown.

Again, don't know if it's possible. But the Lakers need a combo guard and another big bruiser, IMO.

'Well Fisher has already five rings, why would he like another tainted ring acquired from narcissism?'

Well said Edwin

How about Tracy McGrady off the bench?

Like I wrote every time, Derek Fisher will be back as a Laker. No doubt. Kobe Bryant plays better with Fisher as the point guard. Let me re-post my Haiku from this morning, when everything was hanging in the balance:

Guard Derek Fisher
Leads Lakers to victory
Seventeenth title.

T-Mac's knee is done.

Mark Medina, congratulations! You were on the front page of LA!

Jon - that one guy i think your refering to is TMAC lol

oh and btw CONGRATS to DFISH our favorite VETERANO back in the game with our city... we thank you for staying loyal to LA after all these years. youve always been a good player and even better person in life. hope this great season will bring you best of luck and another championship. if anyone deserved it more its you D Fish. yes, all of us have been hard on you at times but we still love and respect you... you made the right choice and we couldnt expect anythig more. you are a true value to this team and to players alike. you bring nothing but good fundimentals to the great game of basketball and with that you bring 5 rigs. more than the Miami Meat combined...

lets make this next seson another 3 peat so our Zen master can relax in montana... he came back for more and so did you... thank you sirrrrrrrr!!

what do we play for???? RINGSS!!!!!!!!!

we all bleed PURPLE N GOLD!!!

Thanks for the props Kiwi. How is your life there in London? Wish to hear more insights from you.

Old bloggers never die, they just fade away.

Nice piece of work Art - Fl laker Fan...

Even Shaq was my favorite Laker during the 3peat days...I don't see him ever coming back to LA, while Dr. Buss owns the team...

He might have a shot if Kobe asks for him...which is as likely as Lebron changing his mind and leaving see how he wanted Fish, and it happened...

Shaq's big mouth is the blame...and not quite as bad as James, but narcissism, as we see, is not being tolerated by the fans anymore...

I think we resign DJ Mbenga, if he takes a pay cut, like half of what he made last least we know what we are getting, someone familiar with the system...Besides, he is just there for insurance if AB gets hurt again...

great great news and a big relief.

LMAO @ Jon K.

OK I will monitor the consumption of soda....

I got chills when I read this! GO LAKERS!!!!

WOW! Great News! Even if three years is a bit much, he deserves it! Maybe he'll forgo the last year and become an assistant coach instead. Anyhow, with Fish and Blake in and Farmar gone our PG situation is improved over last year.

Now we need a fifth guard and a couple of bigs and we're ready to show Miami what a real TEAM is. Personally I like what we had last year. Shannon and Josh and DJ know the system and for my money are perfect in their roles. But if Mitch can upgrade like he did on the Farmar-for-Blake exchange (and last year's Ariza-for-Artest exchange) then I'm all for it.

A couple things...

1) Lately, I have been unable to comment on here as often as I would like to, however, I always read through nearly all the comments just to keep up with what's going on here. What amazes me is how often I'll read a post, think about how I would have responded, and then scroll down to find you posted almost exactly what I would have said. I wouldn't say we have mind meld, but it's close. So kudos. I find you to be a knowledgeable and level-headed poster.

2) While I generally agree with your thoughts on Ebanks and Caracter and their chances to make the team, I do think maybe you're underestimating how well Caracter has been playing to this point, and how long term the Lakers are probably thinking with this guy. Yes, he offset his 16 & 10 with 8 fouls and 8 TO today, but in the SPL, it's not so much about looking at a guy's numbers but looking at his value vs. his competition and his potential for growth, and I think that so far, Caracter has come up smelling like a rose on both fronts.

Several scouts (Arnovitz, Thorpe, et al.) have commented on how potentially huge a steal this could be for the Lakers. Caracter has shown underrated athleticism, a fantastic touch around the basket, good footwork on the block and a decent passing touch. Where he needs work are where most rookies need work - his midrange game, understanding individual and team defense better, reading and reacting to what the defense gives him (especially double teams), and the intricacies of the offense. Everything he has, you can't teach, and everything he doesn't have, you can. Frankly, these are generally the kind of guys that are drafted in the first round, not with the 58th pick. All the talk about his weight and attitude - the things that made him drop so far in the first place - have so far been put to bed.

The Lakers know that he probably can't help much this year, but they don't need his help yet, and this just isn't the kind of guy you let go. Guys like Caracter are valuable commodities in this league, and that's why I think the Lakers put him on the roster this year, despite his obvious weaknesses. Of course, he's not a lock, but his value to the Lakers this year is probably not much less than Powell's, and his potential value is exponentially higher. I just don't think the Lakers can overlook that.

I'm not sure if DJ CAN take a pay cut.
I think he was playing for the veteran's minimum last year and that either stays the same or increases after another year.

I really don't care......lakers, heat.....who cares????
Indiana Pacers are gonna win it all!!

Thanks my friend for your response on Ebanks and Caracter. I'm rootin' for these two young men to make the team and give us an infusion of young blood. While both have a lot of work to do to improve their game, they also have tremendous talent, potential and a great feel for the game. Mitch Kupchak and crew obviously like what they see and others around the league are saying that the Lakers got two steals. As much as I respect both Powell and Luke for what they've meant and brought to the team, I believe that they've both reached their ceiling as far as production and talent. Caracter and Ebanks haven't even scratched the surface of their immense talent and potential and could learn a great deal under PJ and the veterans on our team.

Besides their play, I'm more impressed with them saying all the right things and their strong desire to make the team. Despite the issues about their character's, they seem to be very gracious and thankful to the Lakers for picking them and giving them an opportunity to play for a world champion. I expect both to make the team and contribute off the bench with energy and surprisingly good play. Go Lakers!!!

I'd be willing to bet that some team, somewhere is going to make Shannon Brown a multiyear offer for more than 2 million, and I'd further bet that Shannon will take it despite him wanting to come back to the Lakers, which he obviously does. Shannon, who if everyone recalls was one step from being out of the league when he came to LA, is looking to set up his family for the long run, and it doesn't seem like the Lakes have been willing to do for him, at least up until now. I can't say I'd blame Shannon if he leaves for this reason, although I hope he stays b/c the Lakers sorely need his youth and athleticism.

I can't help but keep coming back to Tracy McGrady if Shannon leaves. McGrady was an incredible talent - at one point peope debated between him and Kobe - and surely he still has some of that guy left in him, at least for 10 mins a night. Wouldn't if be great if we had a proven slasher/scorer you could reliably spell Kobe? The problem is that McGrady's old and certainly not a PG, so Sasha would have to learn to handle the ball as an emergency PG. Thoughts?

Jay Jay -

DJMbenga made almost 1 mil last year...But he is a free why can we sign him for less, if he gets no offers...

Does he automatically have to make more than the previous year...

Ay Caramba...these salary rules are so confusing...

Fans will undoubtedly celebrate Fish's return all summer, then predictably complain about his slowness defending speedy point guards and declining offensive production. After being celebrated as a savior, he'll return to being "too old" and a "liability."

Andy Kamenetsky

Great! Now that Fish is Back, how about
Sign and trade Shannon, Sasha and future pick for JR Smith if possible.

Jon K -

I drink Coke frequently - very frequently - and have never had a cavity in my life. I know this is anecdotal, but perhaps the damaging effects of Coke on one's teeth are slightly overblown, while the importance of other things (like drinking filtered tap water - what with its high fluoride content - as opposed to drinking fluoride-free bottled water) is understated. Again, this isn't to say Coke can't be damaging, just that there are other factors that are probably far more important to healthy teeth than the reduction of one's Coca-Cola intake.

Therefore, I say, LEWSTRS, drink on!

Kobe is the biggest bargain in the league. If the market dictated prices in the NBA (i.e. no salary cap, no max salaries, etc), Kobe would be earning even MORE than his current salary. If this was a business model, based on return on investment, Kobe is actually UNDERPAID. He sells out arenas playing with Smush and Kwame, and brought multiple dynasties to Los Angeles. If you're going to be frustrated at someone's salary, than look at the players that have NOT EARNED their salaries (i.e. Luke, Bynum, Sasha, Ammo).

And I'm having a hard time believing that Fish was offered more money elsewhere. From who? Miami offered $2 million per year, which is less than what Fish was offered from the Lakers. 36 year old Fish just signed a THREE YEAR contract, after initially getting offered only one year. He sites Kobe's support for his decision to stay in LA..... yet you're somehow upset at Kobe that Fish was not offered more money? Yeah, it's Kobe's fault alright.

Just stop.....stop.......everyone needs to get a grip here. If the Pacers don't win the whole thing this year then it will probably be the Nets. "The Fish" (come on - what a name).

Oh, by the way, for anyone who was hoping that Mike Miller might still sign here, those dreams are gone. He has agreed to join the Miami Heat.

Hi all - the deal might be a year too long but I would imagine he will be coming off the bench then.

I doubt any of us will be crying when we have a 6 or 7x champion coming off the bench - that's called depth and a stabilizer for what will be a youthful bench given the cap space situation the next few years.

D-Fish knows he has 1-2 more years. The 3rd was a Lakers consolation for taking less $$$.

How much did Fish get?

Thornton Mellon? That's what you got?

DJ and JK et al - I would tend to guess that everyone else left Walton, Sasha, AB17 and if they can be the 2 draft picks are all fair trade pawns.

There is a reason why the Lakers FO are now hyping the play of the 2 Summer leaguers with the media - trying to raise their value. Just watch and see if we start hearing about the marked improvement with Luke's back.

The Lakers FO is not sitting idly by. There will be something stunning - I just feel it.

lakers still need somebody to come in and supply some offense when kobe's on the bench. still thinking lakers have two more signings to go. a 3-point shooter/scorer off the bench and a big man. not many left....barnes, bell, t-mac, brad miller, ratliff, z, dj. richardson's signing in orlando means barnes is probably not going there. bell is not going to make more than the minimum with miami. however, with no state income tax, the lakers remaining mle and miami's minimum become a push.

Man it was nice to hear today that Derek Fisher signed w/ the Cleveland Cavs. Fisher is as good as James. I bet the Cavs have a shot now to win it all.

Statement From Derek Fisher
by Derek Fisher
My free agency was a time for me to reevaluate my position in the league, reflect on my accomplishments individually and as a teammate, and determine what new goals I want to achieve in the future. Many reports were completely false. Numbers reported were guesses and true "sources" were few and far between.

I took time to consider all my options, many not reported in the media. I listened to every coach, every general manager, even potential teammates in order to make the right decision and I thank every one of them. At the end of the day, there's one person I could not turn away from. Kobe Bryant asked me to stay but supported whatever decision I made. He and I have played together for 11 seasons, came into the league together as kids, and has been loyal to me even when others had doubts. We have won five championships together.

I have decided to continue with Kobe, continue with our teammates and the fans of Los Angeles. While this may not be the most lucrative contract I've been offered this off season, it is the most valuable.

I am confident I will continue to lead this team on and off the court. Let the hunt for six begin...

Of course there are multiple factors including genetics and nutritional history; however, it is clear that someone who has a calcium and vitamin D deficient diet AND who drinks cola (or any drink with phosphoric acid) will have more weaker bones and teeth (with very rare exceptions) than someone who has a diet high in calcium and vitamin D AND does not drink cola (or any drink with phosophoric acid.)

Want to test me? If you have a child that loses his or her baby tooth, after you played the role of the tooth fairy, take that tooth and leave it in a cup of coca-cola for the evening (or even less than that). When you return there will be no tooth. It will have been completely dissolved by the phosphoric acid in the soda.

Why? Phosphoric acid breaks down calcium bonds effeciently.

It's just the way it is.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

Jon K - I did notice the love on the front page. That's really cool!

Is Fisher a God or something........who cares. He is no MJ (meaning Michael Jackson).

DEREK FISHER: I knew it. Here is your home your fans your love. Money? we fans dont care about money. its buisness. from our standpoint money cant describe how much u did 4 this ballclub.we love you. u belong to the lakers and we are proud of our number 2.

We need to sign a minimum of 4 FA's.

I see Caracter and Ebanks with an excellent chance to make the team, but contributing very little this year.

We need at least two, if not three quality, veteran free agents.

MBenga, Powell, and Brown are the best available that know our system.

The key is, can we afford them? And if we can't, then what rookie or vet can fill those roles and be used by Coach Jackson? Even with the lux-tax penalties, isn't it a small amount to pay for injury insurance?

I think now that Fisher has signed, the Lakers will have a better handle on the finances and we will get those answers pretty soon.

3 years? By 2013, we may see both DFish & Pierce guarding each other in wheelchairs.

Why the Heat even went after DFish is beyond me. Their composition seems best suited to a Showtime style of play, hardly DFish's strong point. Did they think he could somehow bring an aura of "Championness" that LeGone lacks? If so, major FAIL on their part.

Well Laker fans are happy, at least until the season starts & we see DFish shooting 1/10 again. If we see 3 pt killer shots in the next 3 Finals them it'll be worth it...

Sorry to spoil the party but WTH! 3 YEARS with a player option??!! Has mitch lost his mind? In 3 years dfish will be 400 years old.. B.C

Damn.. I was thinkin 2 years w team option.. But it has to be for less than 2MIL if 3 years.. It has to be

Now dfish and luke r LOCKED for the next three years... Gotta call my doctor. Gonna need a much bigger dosage of blood pressure medication

The salary cap should be adjusted based upon state tax. It's not fair that Miami can defacto pay players more because they are not being taxed as much as other states.

It's not the Lakers fault that our state government is completely incompetent. They shouldn't be penalized for that by the league.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

Hi yellofever,
He'll play for 1 year, then 2nd year he'll sit, then 3rd year assistent coach.

fish could go elswhere... be glad he stayed with the lakers.whatever it costs. he deserves the true laker fans are very glad that the deal is fix and done

Amen, Lakerjesus...

MM -

You have a 'spamatic commenter' in Kobe James

Fatty- I agree, bring back Powell, Brown, DJ would be the best to assure team continuaty.

Oh darn, that means we have to endure 3 more years of DFish the blogger... 8-)

Fish could earn extra money by teaching some of these NBA players, and I won't call any names, about having some 'class.' Welcome back Fish!

Luke needs to take a grenade for the team and organization, he's had his free ride.

Lebron watch what you say on this blog. Do not represent a negative image for the NBA.

Gettin' DFish back was a must, coz like I said in an earlier thread, 'DFish is M.O.N.E.Y.!!!! :)

Also, if we still need a big, howz about JMagloire, is he's still available. I know some will say he's a bum but, it's not like he'd likely see substantial PT and he's an experienced big who could spell Drew or Pau for a couple of minutes so they can stay fresh for the post season.

Anyhoo, I'm extremely glad to get DFish back in the fold...if the Black Mamba felt so strongly about him returning that pretty much said it all as far as I'm concerned. Now, let's see IF the Heat can live up to all the hype and make it to the finals, coz barring injury we'll be there.

Let's go Ls...all the way to a 3-peat!!!

Ok Commish.....I leave. Da King no longer in the house. I'm out of the house.......out house.

Wow that sun is bright! One might even that's a tear running down my cheek, were it not so especially humid today.

That quote by Fisher was one of the greatest I've ever heard. What was it?, that "Kobe asked me to stay"?

Simple, and beautiful. Where's Ron when we need a comic relief?

This is from the desk of Com. D. Stern.

Congrats on the front page of the LA Time website -- that is pretty neat.

I am glad Fisher's back. I am also glad that he took the time to mention Kobe's influence. I am a Laker fan first and foremost, but have enjoyed watching Kobe's journey over the past decade or so. I never really believed much of what passed for "fact" on the internet, but instead tried to pay attention to actual events and the acts of those around Kobe. I think it is beyond doubt that, regardless of the ups and downs of a long season, these guys respect him and his will to succeed. Good stuff.

JONK… What’s this anti-Coke stuff? First, it’s cats. Now you want to make war on Coke? I probably drink 3 or 4 Cokes a day and have very healthy teeth, even for an old geezer. It’s my coffee or tea. And I hate Pepsi. Coke is Kobe. Pepsi is LeBron. Hell, he could even be RC Cola as far as I am concerned. Give the real thing. Kobe, Magic, Coke, Lakers, Yankees, Jeter, the Mick, Mariano, and on and on. No pretenders allowed. No Three Kings. No LeBron, Wade, and Bosh. Miami drinks Pepsi.

Comm. David Stern drinks Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper......I likes alittle Kiss.

Ok ..ok..........This is kobe here.
I will let you in on alittle secret. I wanted D-Fish back because if he went to Miami we are screwed. We probably won't win anyway. but at least they don't have him.

I concur, COKE is best!!! :)

Christmas in July...or should I say Fishmas! Thank you, Free-Agent Santa!

Chances are good that Fish probably agreed to $3M or less per year. Which is EXACTLY what he's worth. NO MORE NO LESS. After all that is said and done the bottom line is still it is much more important about points, assists, steals, defense etc... than things like leadership and intangibles -which are over-rated.

I hardly see the reason or cause for Fish's fans to be gloating or feeling vindicated.

My prediction is that they start the season with Fish starting and Blake backing him up but by season's end the roles will be reversed.

Don't forget you hear it here first you all!
