Caught in the Web: Reaction to Matt Barnes' signing

6a00d8341c506253ef0120a917ae77970b-800wi

--The Times' Broderick Turner and Mike Bresnahan report that Matt Barnes accepted a two-year deal with a player option his second year with the Lakers for, at most, $1.77 million next season. Turner and Bresnahan also report the Lakers agreed with Theo Ratliff to a one-year, $1.35 million contract.

--Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski first broke the story on Barnes' agreement with the Lakers.

--NBA.com's David Aldridge analyzes what the Lakers' moves will do to the team.

--The Orange County Register's Kevin Ding argues that Barnes will bolster the Lakers' bench. Ding also has a slideshow of Barnes' infamous altercations. Ding also likes the Ratliff acquisition.

--ESPN Los Angeles' Andy Kamenetzky raises some concerns on what Barnes would bring to the Lakers.

--The Baltimore Sun's Don Markus delves into Steve Blake's history as a player and reports that Kobe Bryant texted Blake welcoming him to the team.

--NBA.com's John Schuhmann predicts Lakers forward Lamar Odom will play at center for Team USA

--The Daily News' Elliott Teaford points out the Lakers' acquisitions make them older and more experienced.

--Sports Illustrated's Ian Thomsen explains how the Lakers still dominate the league.

--AOL Fanhouse's Chris Tomasson highlights Odom's contention that he's in "horrible shape" during Team USA's training camp. Before Laker fans get angry at L.O., Team USA Coach Mike Krzyzewski thinks Odom looks fine.

--Lakers.com's Mike Trudell talks with ESPN's Doris Burke about various Lakers topics.

--Silver Screen and Roll's DexterFishmore argues the Lakers' bench is already better than last season's.

--Forum Blue and Gold's Phillip gives some quick-hit thoughts on the off-season.

Tweet of the Day: "Its official I AM A LOS ANGLES LAKER. I wanna thank u for all ur patients and understanding. This is a dream come true!!! Good lookn Kobe" -- matt_barnes22 (Lakers forward Matt Barnes)

Reader Comment of the Day: "I thought of reminding new Lakers that coming to the Southland is not just to get rings. It comes with it hard work, responsibility and contributions to the team. Artest paid his dues and earned something from his persistence. Gasol became a changed man when he became a Laker. That is what we expect from Blake, Barnes and Ratliff. They may be veterans, old in the business, used to do the same old things all over again, well they should change that paradigm as role players. When they are called to play they should contribute in so many ways may it be rebounds, defense, free throws. Their Laker tenure is not just a passing time to get to the next contract but perhaps a place where they would finish their career. A career that they can be proud of to tell their children and grandchildren that "I was formerly a Laker with so and so and this is how we played the game etc.etc. Every time I dribble at Staples, I'm having goose bumps as though I'm being watched by the golden voice, Chick Hearn chuckling at hot dog plays or the late Mikan & Wilt nodding their heads and Jerry West telling me how to execute a jump shot. The legends are still alive in the rafters, all present cheering for me." -- Edwin Gueco

If the Lakers decide to pass on Caracter and/or Ebanks, do they have any money left to sign any of the FA's?

As of yesterday, the Lakers just got a lot better. If they make any other moves, I'd like to see Shannon Brown signed in place of Caracter. He knows the system, and another year in the triangle would see him flourish. Overall, though, I'm giving the Lakers an A+ for the 0ff-season.

Good work, Mitch. Thanks, Dr. Buss. And kudos to Kobe for caring more about team-building than bygone rivalries. That's one of the things that makes him special. Kobe respects the guys who work hard against him, who have the cajones to stand up to his physicality, and he wants that kind of grit and toughness in purple and gold.

Go Lake Show!

Good Morning Laker Fam,

Another glorious day in Lakerland!!! Mitch has done a superb job of improving our bench. As many of us have said before, the two main goals of the Lakers heading into the upcoming season is improving our bench and health. Goal #1 has been accomplished, and I still think our rookies will have impact at some point this season. Now it's all about our health and our core players, Kobe, Andrew and Pau have elected to address injuries and get much deserved rest.

Ouchhhhhhhhhh,

I did read about Blake's mixed martial arts training. Impressive. That fact that he's also low-key, quiet and unassuming is just as impressive. I'm sure he'll let his play and leadership do the talking.

The youtube videos you posted on Barnes were hilarious, especially the one where he shoves KG, LOL. Not only did Barnes run through KG's screen like a running back, Barnes then turned around and threw a vicious block that would've made Hines Ward proud(Barnes use to play wide receiver at UCLA as well). The look on KG's face was priceless!!!

Barnes will turn into a Laker favorite if he continues to play with that edge and attitude off the bench. I also believe that we'll see a second unit that will be able to run better and more than the bench we had last year with LO, Blake, Barnes, Sasha, Ratliff and sprinkle in some Ebanks and Caracter.

Hobbit,

You've probably already heard of or seen him by now, but if you haven't, check out my current sifu's sifu on youtube. His name is Emin Boztepe. A master in Wing Tsun and several other martial arts. He's phenomenal. The past several years I've trained in Wing Tsun and I'm hoping to open a school sometime in the near future to teach Wing Tsun and Muay Thai. Have a great day.

Let's get this party started.

I am predicting the Lakers will win 72 games.

Nemaia, I'll look into it.

@LEWSTRS, You heard the man we need a 72 game bandwagon and I'll take one of those seats! THANKS!!!

I'm not sure of it, but wasn't that what Bruce Lee was trained in before he developed Jeet Kune Do?

Magic Phil,

LOL! Barnes also wrote, "thank u for all ur PATIENTS..." Huh? Does he work in the ER? LOL!

Don't you know that as soon as Mitch told Kobe:

"We signed Barnes & Ratliff to go with Blake."

Kobe said, "Here we go!" aka ya se armo

LOL! Barnes also wrote, "thank u for all ur PATIENTS..." Huh? Does he work in the ER? LOL! Posted by: Nemaia Faletogo | July 23, 2010 at 09:30 AM

Come on guys! The man was so excited to be becoming a Laker he just made a few mistakes. Lol! So long as he can play D. Nemaia. By the way do you use Sticky Hands in your Wing Tsun?

Hope that these intellectually wanting people like Matt Barnes learn the difference between patience and patients before it may matter.

Don't make fun of Matt. He was are spelling champ win he went too UCLA.

Everyone says Barnes is a cerebral player, judging on spelling, I'm now concerned if he can grasp the triangle lol, everyone knows it's complex, and he's much more of a patient than having patience, Lord help us

Don't make fun of Matt. He was are spelling champ win he went too UCLA.Posted by: Laker Larry | July 23, 2010 at 09:52 AM
ROFLMAO!! STOP IT I SAY!!!!

From Andy K's article:
"In any event, I'm guessing Barnes on board means the Lakers will part ways with Shannon Brown. With Kobe theoretically playing fewer minutes at the three, there probably won't be enough SG minutes to justify signing Shannon long term. Instead, Sasha Vujacic will resume his 2008 role."

I DON'T like it. I DO like Barnes or "Thriller Lite" as I call him, but Sasha has an overinflated sense of how good he is as well as an overinflated contract. Is there any way we can dump him for somebody's trade exception and use the money to resign Brown? Shannon gives us the athleticism at the wing we lost when we lost Trevor and there are games when we really need that.

Mamba24,

Yes, that's what Bruce Lee trained in prior to developing Jeet Kune Do.

Yes, to the Sticky Hands.

Yes, Barnes was excited, so we'll give him a pass, LOL!

Magic Phil,

See what you started?!!! LOL

wow dmanit we got barnes and ratliff now ughhh

LMAO!!!!!!

Okay, Mitch officially gets an "A".

He drafts who players deep into the second round that are first round caliber picks.

He signs a collection of players for below market price who better than adequately fill our needs, at least two of them are hungry.

Unlike last season, it looks like next year's roster has no dead weight. That's huge.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Paul Ostroff,

LOL! Maybe what Barnes really means is that when he runs out of patience on the court, he'll commit such a hard, flagrant foul that the opposing team's training staff will have a lot of patients! How's that?!!!

@ Nemaia Faletogo, Thanks, I read up on your Sifu, seems to be pretty impressive to me. Thank you for the info. I think Wesley Snipes had a Telecast a few years back where he was showing all the outstanding Matrtial Arts teachers and their different Arts and he gave Kudos to him. Thanks again.

Edwin Gueco,

"Congratulations on the RCOD. Very poetic and visionary."

Ditto.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

@ raiderlaker1980 - good one!

How cool would this rotation be for the regular season?

PG - Fish 24 mins, Blake 24 mins
SG - Kobe 34 mins, Shannon 14 mins
SF - Artest 30 mins, Barnes 18 mins
PF - Pau 20 mins, Lamar 28 mins
C - Bynum 30 mins, Pau 18 mins

Plenty of rest for our starters, plenty of minutes for Lamar, Blake, Barnes, and Brown, and always a solid team on the floor. Then in the playoffs we up all the starters' minutes except in the PF/C rotation where we adjust game by game.

Take that Miami!

Everyone likes to win. Not everyone hates to lose. Even fewer possess the mental strength and physical ability to IMPOSE their will and snatch victory from an opponent's grasp.

I have always felt that the kind of players I want to go to war with are THOSE kind of guys: MEN who absolute HATE to lose. MEN who would gladly pour out their Blood, Sweat, and Tears to WIN above anything else.

On the Lakers...the Alpha Male who embodies THOSE characteristics...is Kobe Bryant.

(Btw, that is precisely why I have NO respect for LAZY, unmotived Shaq -- who has a TINY heart, as well as apparently, other *ahem* body parts -- thanks for the info, Jon K)

Derek Fisher, when asked about his friend and teammate, spoke of Kobe's uncanny ability to "will" the ball into the hoop at the most critical moments.

I am confident that one of the reasons Mitch Kupchak wanted Steve Blake, Matt Barnes, and Theo Ratliff, was because he saw some of that hunger, passion, and hatred of losing, in those three guys.

Maybe those three never had a TEAM around them that could win consistently, but on THIS Lakers team they DO. Winning early and often will bring out their best. You can take that to the bank!

Just as some marginal players went to Boston, and picked up on that 'Celtic Mystique' attitude, these 3 guys are going to quickly learn what it's like to PROUDLY wear the "Purple & Gold Armor" as Kobe calls it.

Welcome to The Best Organization in the NBA gentlemen.

@ Purple & Gold Reign - wow that really touched me! im in tears lol

can someone give me Matt Barnes's stats for last season? was he injured?

Excellent!!

Thank you MM, good friend LakerTom (whom I always love to tease), old buddy Jon K and everyone else. So our vacation begins or one more player lacking in Shannon.

C'mon, Shannon get it done, just look at the total salary of the Lakers at this time approaching 94M including the two rookies, that's 3m over last year and therefore 6M additional w/ luxury taxes without your salary yet. Be reasonable with your demands or else we say - Goodbye and nice knowing you.

P&G R,

Great post. The absolute truth.

Mamba24,

Thanks for trying to cover for Matt. Maybe he confused Los Angles for the Triangle as you said. Anyways, thanks to you guys, I had a great laugh, which is good medicine for the heart!

I can embrace that...

Thank You for the kind words and support everyone...

Phil Jackson mentioned his desire to make his final NBA campaign a "grand one." I know he would never publicly admit to it, but with the improvements to the roster, it wouldn't surprise me IF one of the goals he sets out for the team is to try to break the Bull's 72-10 record...or, at least go for 70 wins.

We shall see.

P & G R

@JAY JAY... I like your rotations but you need to replace Brown with Vujacic and give Ratliff a few minutes to keep Pau’s minutes down so he is fresher. Of course, the blowouts will increase the garbage time for the rooks. 13 man roster consisting of 10 vets (2 at each of the 5 positions) plus 2 rookies and Luke as the guy in a suit.

PG - Fish 24 mins, Blake 24 mins

The quality of UCLA shines through yet again! And just to let you guys know, Dr. Buss is an SC alum.

Is there any way to make Luke and Sasha go away now ? If we resign Shannon and add the 2 rooks we have an awesome team without their useless 11 mil per year. Can we get rid of them for someone's trade exceptions? Or even swap them even up for a couple of sandwiches?

@ Lakertom - " and Luke as the guy in a suit. " ahaha thats funny...

LMAO! VICIOUS, ABSOLUTELY VICIOUS!!!

Remember when Matt Barnes was bashed by a folding chair? Hilarious: http://bit.ly/bWrySD

Also, great pickup for Lakers - another coup for Mitch.

P & GR,

With the age of our team, I don't think it makes much sense for us to go after 72 wins. I'd rather see the team pace themselves during the regular season, giving our bench plenty of PT, and be fully healthy come playoff time.

@ Mamba24 - im riding on the roof, or open the sunroof lol i need to breath this 72 games.... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh smells like victory

BARNES AS A BRUIN...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s always nice to have a Bruin on the Lakers squad. One thing I remember clearly from Matt’s days at UCLA was that he was an excellent player in the paint. I remember him also being a very good internal passer and one of those guys who naturally never stops on the court, always moving. As he struggled to carve a niche for himself in the NBA, the tattoos and bizarre behavior seemed to increase and he stopped being a favorite and started to become more of a nemesis. The big thing for all of us who lost a little faith in Matt since his Bruin days is here is a guy who wanted to play for the Lakers enough to sign a contract for half of what he could have gotten from the Cavs. You talk all you want about the Super friends giving up a few million or even Malone and Payton playing for the minimum but these are all players who made fortunes and were giving up peanuts. Matt Barnes, who has never had a bigger payday than $1.9M, is giving up $3.5M to play for the Lakers. That says he deserves to get a fresh start in every Lakers fan’s heart of hearts. Way to go, Matt. Welcome to the Lakers.
An insight into Shannon Brown's decision-making in pressure situations and why he ended up in LAL in Feb 2009:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=290206030
"With guard D.J. Augustin struggling in his return from an abdominal injury, coach Larry Brown turned to an unusual lineup that included little-used Shannon Brown in the final minute.
"Brown then threw away an inbounds pass to Josh Smith with Charlotte trailing by three. Facing the same deficit in the closing seconds, Brown drove to the basket and had his shot swatted by Smith."
Those bone-head plays were the last straw for coach Larry Brown. The following day Shannon was bundled into the package for the Ammo-VladRad trade.
LAKERS ACE THE OFFSEASON !!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the uproar in Miami subsides, the rest of the NBA is going to slowly realize that the Lakers may have had as superb an offseason as all those teams that gorged themselves on high-priced free agents. Beginning with smoothing the way for Phil Jackson to return, resigning team co-captain Derek Fisher, signing free agents Steve Blake, Theo Ratliff, and now Matt Barnes, and getting 2 second round steals in draft picks Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter, Mitch has proven once again that he has become a master at his craft as he has dramatically upgraded the two-time NBA champion Lakers’ bench.
~
The Lakers’ offseason objective was simple – better defense and veteran consistency from the bench. While we are not yet all the way there, there is no doubt that Mitch has greatly improved the bench by upgrading 5 out of the team’s total 8 bench players from last year. Versatile proven point guard Steve Blake replaces the disappointing Jordan Farmar as point backup. Veteran shot blocker Theo Ratliff takes over at backup center for the rarely used D.J. Mbenga. Rookie draftee forwards Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter will likely replace the never trusted Adam Morrison and Josh Powell and rugged perimeter 1-on-1 defender Matt Barnes will now probably replace the inconsistent Shannon Brown.
~
The big benefits this retooling of the bench will provide will be the ability to hold and build on leads while the starters rest and more importantly, the ability to reduce the minutes for the starters to keep them fresher and healthier for the playoffs. Blake may actually end up playing more minutes at point than Fish and Ratliff may get minutes that Mbenga could not helping backup Drew to reduce Pau’s heavy minutes and/or limit Drew’s minutes to deter possible injuries due to overtiring. And Barnes will save Kobe from having to guard Wade or Allen could be vital He may play the 3 but he is really a better defender at the 2 because of his 6-7 height, length, and toughness. Great end moves, Mitch.
~
As to the glut of small forwards, I think the Lakers are basically planning on Luke manning the inactive list for the season. I am sure he can contribute with a pen and clipboard. It is also not beyond possibility that the Lakers may end up with a $3M disabled player exception if Luke cannot play. Had we been able to sign Jeremy Lin, it would have been absolutely perfect. It was good to know that we didn’t get outbid. Bottom line, Mitch and the Lakers have aced the offseason and when the smoke clears everybody is going to change their tune as to which team is the favorite when play starts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PG-Fisher, Blake
SG-Bryant, Vujacic
SF-Artest, Barnes, Ebanks, Walton
PF-Gasol, Odom, Caracter
CE-Bynum, Ratliff
DEAR LAKER FANSSS... why have you not hoped on the BANWAGON?
were waiting to go get barnes from Orlando lol
this may sound funny but i dont think barnes would be a laker if it wasnt for the "ball to kobes face incident".
it was after that play when kobe didnt flinch that barnes became completely mesmerized.. and had that ball slipped and hit kobe he probably wouldnt be here either..
@Mamba24 - As I recall in the movie, The Last Hurrah, the main character, played by Spencer Tracy, actually loses the election...
Why does everyone keep saying pick Vujacic over Brown? Im sure you cant possibly be serious I mean Vujacic's biggest feats last year were twisting his ankle and almost costing us a game vs the Suns. Seriously Brown has much much much more upside than Walton and Vujacic combined. The only reason both of thoes SCRUBS is still on the team is no one else will take them. Which is Sad.
Laker Tom -
Well as usual we agree on 90% and disagree on 10.
I think Shannon Brown is SO much better than Sasha Lose-his-swish. I would SO love to see us dump Sasha for someone's trade exception and spare parts. Sasha's only asset, reliable 3-point shooting, has been missing for two years now, and his dribbling is a joke. Brown gives us the soaring athleticism we lost when Trevor went away, and there are games when that's exactly what's needed.
Vujacic's biggest feats last year were twisting his ankle and almost costing us a game vs the Suns.
============
Where do the 2 free throws at the end of game 7 rank?
@ yellofever - thats actually false! Raja Bell closlined KOBE lol and kobe wanted to go on a lunch with him and invite him to the lakers ahah so if the ball slipped out of Barnes's hands and hit kobe in the face, he would have been a laker last season... ahahahahah
Ok, how was THIS not the tweet of the day??? From Ron Artest... I'm still laughing hysterically...
"Matt has the heart off a lion on steroids wit extra chest hairs and three testicles screaming " Adrian "!!!!!!"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Yellofever,
"OUR BENCH IS FREAKIN STACKED"
Hell Yeah! Unlike last season, Phil will have the luxury of playing all the bench players together, without a starter on the court.
JayJay,
I hope to see more minutes for Blake. He needs to learn to play with both the bench and the starters, and I think limiting Fish and Bynum's minutes will be important to keep them fresh for the playoffs. Less minutes for Bynum should hopefully minimize risk of another injury.
PG - Fish 20 mins, Blake 28 mins
SG - Kobe 34 mins, Sasha 14 mins
SF - Artest 34 mins, Barnes 14 mins
PF - Pau 18 mins, Lamar 30 mins
C - Bynum 22 mins, Pau 16 mins, Theo 10 mins
New radio interview with Matt Barnes! Kobe was instrumental in the signing, according to him... check it out.
NO,NO, NOOOOOO! OH SWEET JESUS WHAT HAVE WE DONE!!!!!!
@ And the first time he get's out of line with Kobe...Ron Ron is gonna deck his @zz.!! Lol!
ahaha yes im a witnesss to this!! ahaha LBJ logo " were are witnesses " ahahah VERY NICE AHAH
Still not convinced Mitch & Buss won't dangle Bynum as trade bait for CP3, but one way or the other, I wouldn't be surprised to see Portland swoop in with an offer of Oden, Miller, and possibly Fernandez (with salaries of 6.7 mil, 7.2 mil, and 1.2 mil., respectively) for Paul and his 14.9 mil. salary. And THAT would make Portland -- with Paul next to Roy -- downright scary.
Matt Barnes said "Kobe and I were texting each other like we were boyfriend and girlfriend for the past two weeks".
Uh oh....looks like Artest will have some competition in his fight for Kobe's affections next year. Artest versus Barnes during practice should be interesting. This might turn out to be some kind of bizarre love triangle (no pun intended).
WAHAHAHHAHHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHAH! NO, NO...WAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA!
Nice way with the words Edwin. I always thought, early on, that Chick wasn’t given due credit, and was somewhat overlooked, not because he wasn’t great, but because powerhouses Vin Scully and Jerry Dogget were in the same town, and the Dodgers were happening. That’s what happens when you have two of the greatest sportcasters of all time working in the same town.
Good morning La La Land. Don’t drink out of the tap this morning, whatever you do. I have a sense that many Laker fans are struggling with an underlying and deep sense of trepidation and resolve about the coming season. Laker fans know the Lakers must not only maintain greatness, but that they must significantly improve if they want to make it to the dance with Miami. Can you imagine Paula or the Saint going down with an injury?
I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you. That’s right. I said it.
Yes, it is true. Kobe is so old. And beat up. All those injuries. All those years. 32 and counting, to be exact. Add an extra four years to that for starting so young. (Puts him at about 36 doesn’t it?) How much of the load should Laker fans expect him to continue carrying, or how many more bullets can he dodge before he really shatters or tears something? Could it happen before, or after Bynum goes down this season?
Andy boy is 23, going on 53. He can be useful, if he stays up, but in a limited role only. Too bad really. It is clear that injury will prevent him from ever being one of the greats. You’ll need him functioning at his highest level (for most of the season) if your plan is to three-peat, and that kind of workload, as we all know now, doesn’t bode well for the big fellow. Hey, I didn’t set it up this way! He said it himself...he’s injury prone.
Still, I advise you to advise your fellow Laker fans not to fret.
Paula, age 30. Has become kind-of a real man in the trenches. Worthy of admiration and respect for sure, but as with the Saint, we already know that he can’t carry a team to a championship. How long can Paula carry the team with Andrew or Kobe, or both down? Shudder to think. Maybe Ron or Lamar can carry the load.
Testes, age 30, going on 13. He’s still ferocious, but I noticed just a tad slower, that, or some have just figured him out. He’s like a box of chocolates...You never know...and he is long overdue. So far, so good. Knock on weed.
Lamar, at age 31. Just give the man his check, let him be a Hollywood Rock Star, smoke it with Ron, and don’t bring too many expectations, or too much on-court attention his way. He’ll always give what he thinks is decent effort and play to the level of the competition, or even above when he is able. He’s a beautiful athlete.
Derek just applied for Medi-Care. Give credit where credit is due though; the man is a natural born politician, clergyman, and leader, and he do know how to win rings. Actually, isn’t it really amazing that he didn’t jump to Miami? Then again, the move would’ve looked bad given his reason for returning to the Lakers. Guess Fish is willing to keep the peace and not settle for more rings than the Saint has, or is likely to get.
Steve Blake, 30. By March, he may be the most consistent and productive player on the squad. Wow. Definitely a championship squad.
You’ve got a couple of promising 2nd Rounders, and it’s great that you’re picking up some pieces. Oh, you’ve got a tough Sacto area kid. Lots of good tats, and he gets after it.
Hey, I’m a Sacramento Kings of Basketball fan. I never count the Lakers out until they are out.
That’s why I say to Laker fans: ‘Don’t worry bout’ a thang’.
The season’s going to be fun. There’s a lot happening around the league. I think it could be great for fans, we’ll see. I’ll be watching closely from afar. Hope Boogie isn’t the one who puts Paula or Andrew on the injured list. Get to watch Reke spin Kobe around again.
Go Kings!
Go Niners!
Go Los Angeles football team!
Nemaia,
you wrote: I liken PJ's last stand to what Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday said in the movie Tombstone, "the final ride of Wyatt Earp and his immortals." PJ, his callous gun for hire in Kobe Bryant will lead this group and destroy any man wearing a red sash(uniform), the Miami Heat(the Cowboys in the movie)!!!
my response: I like it.
ron ron goes out & Barnes comes in.
Barnes vs. LBJ
Barnes: Why Johnny Ringo! You look like someone just walked all over yo grave.
LBJ: My fights not with you Doc.
Barnes: I beg to differ. We started a game if you recall. A game for blood.
LBJ: All right lunger.
Barnes: Say "when"!
LBJ tries to get the first step. Barnes pokes it free. Kobe picks it up for the
fast break.
Barnes: COME ON JOHNNY! COM'ON!
LBJ tries for the block. Kobe drops it off for the trailing Barnes. The Jam!
Barnes, as he trots back down the floor: You're no daisy.
THE LAST HURRAH!! 72 GAMES FOR PHIL - BANDWAGON
*________________________________________________*
(01) HOBBBITMAGE –OWNER - Let's get this party started. I am predicting the Lakers will win 72 gameS
(02) PURPLE AND GOLD REIGN – DRIVER - Phil Jackson mentioned his desire to make his final NBA campaign a "grand one." I know he would never publicly admit to it, but with the improvements to the roster, it wouldn't surprise me IF one of the goals he sets out for the team is to try to break the Bull's 72-10 record...or, at least go for 70 wins. We shall see.
(03) MAMBA24 – RIDING SHOTGUN - This ISH is going to be so much fun this season. I tell you what this means. This means Phil is going after every damn record there is in his final season. 33 in a row, 16 - 0 Playoffs, 72 games regular season
(04) LAL818 - SECURITY - I'm riding on the roof, or open the sunroof lol i need to breath this 72 games.... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh smells like victory
(05)NEMAIA FALETOGO - I liken PJ's last stand to what Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday said in the movie Tombstone, "the final ride of Wyatt Earp and his immortals." PJ, his callous gun for hire in Kobe Bryant will lead this group and destroy any man wearing a red sash(uniform), the Miami Heat(the Cowboys in the movie)!!!
(06) HUMANOMALY - This is Phil's last year, the rookies may not even get onto the floor. Phil wants to go out with a BANG!!!! He wants to go out dominating. So look for less of those 20 point leads Phil wants to make a statement. Now he has the team, as long as they stay healthy, the core of the team knows the system, the new players are all traveled veterans, not counting the rookies, who are just going to be scrimmage players. I think this will be a 67 win season, at least.
Mamba 24,
Hey. You know I love the enthusiasm.
If I was a Laker fan, I think I'd be in denial too.
Or, if I wasn't, I wouldn't admit it on this board.
This is the happy board!
Question everyone, if this is Phils last grand hurrah, why would we want to tie the bulls mark? shouldn't the aim be on 73 wins minimum? just sayin, just sayin......
GREED IS GOOD... AS LONG AS YOU DON'T LOSE!
The top ten on Lakers roster is solid, if not downright scary. The questionable health of Luke and unknowns of two 2nd rounders as the final three pieces may very well blend in surprise quality and minutes along the way.
But, regarding the preseason 72 win chant (yet again!). Here are three samples to consider.
1. '95-96 Bulls reg season 72 wins AND champions.
2. '07 Patriots reg season undefeated BUT lost Superbowl.
3. '09-10 Lakers overall third seed (behind Clev & Orl) BUT champions.
IF we are going to be greedy and speak openly of a such a thing, let's remember that sample #1 above is euphoric, but sample #2 is devestating. (Those of us who were there in 2000 when our 67 WIN team was on the verge of defeat in WCF Game 7 versus Portland know exactly how dark that emotion can be... WHEW!)
BUT, consider the emotional difference between sample #1 ('95-'95 Bulls) and sample #3 ('09-'10 Lakers). Are we any less euphoric in our Game 7, come-from-behind slaying of the Celtics than those Bulls fans were? I seriously doubt it.
So, before we get greedy and start this 72 win bandwagon, let's consider the REAL POINTS OF GREED...
1. ANOTHER 3-PEAT!!! Our third in history, which NOBODY else can claim. Not the Celtics. Not MJ. NOBODY in ANY TEAM SPORT.
2. ALL TIME GREATEST NBA FRANCHISE!!! Most championships (tied for first, and not for long!). Most finals appearances. Most playoff appearances and wins. Most all-time reg season wins.
3. PERSONAL GREATNESS!!! Kobe joins pantheon of 6+ rings club. Lakers add to stable of players in the GOAT discussion (Mikan, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, and Kobe).
4. THUMPING THE HEAT!!! More regular season wins will not do it. Only a championship for Miami Heat will do. Let them win more regular season games so we can inflict a deeper level of devestation with Finals win over them!
So, let's be greedy. But let's be greedy for what really matters!
Mike
Laker Mike,
Nice breakdown.
I don't care about the 73 wins, but LEWSTERS, you got a suburban for Best Record in the League?
HCA all thru the playoffs would be outstanding.
>>>If the Lakers decide to pass on Caracter and/or Ebanks, do they have any
>>>money left to sign any of the FA's?
Just the minimum.
hurayyyyy... good signing this off season. 3peat... yeah.... we are much stronger this year. fear the Lakers!!!!!
Hey. You know I love the enthusiasm.
