Caught in the Web: Matt Barnes excited to be a Laker

-- The Times' Baxter Holmes focuses on the text message exchange between Matt Barnes and Kobe Bryant.

-- The Daily News' Vincent Bonsignore credits Bryant's effort in helping the Lakers secure Barnes.

-- The Orange County Register's Janis Carr explains why it's been a "life-long dream" for Barnes to become a Laker.

-- ESPN.com's John Hollinger argues the Lakers are one of the biggest off-season losers? Hmmm, not sure which Laker team he's talking about. I'd say they did fairly well keeping their main corps and picking up a few pieces along the way. The Lakers didn't do what Miami did because they already had that base in place (insider subscription required).

--ESPN Los Angeles' Andy Kamenetzky breaks down the talking points from Barnes' press conference.

-- Sports Illustrated's Lee Jenkins looks at how Bryant becomes enamored with wanting antagonistic opponents to become his teammates.

-- ESPN Los Angeles' Dave McMenamin looks at how Lakers forward Lamar Odom plans to be a leader on Team USA. McMenamin also outlines why the Lakers pursued Barnes and how they stack up with Miami.

-- The New York Times' Pete Thamel calls Odom one of the "linchpins" of Team USA. Thamel also predicts who, along with Odom, will crack a roster spot.

It was only a matter of time before Ron Artest's rap single, "Champion," featured a remix. Artest joins, who else, T-Pain

-- Silver Screen and Roll's DexterFishmore isn't much of a fan of the food at Staples Center.

-- Forum Blue and Gold's Phillip gives some quick-hit thoughts on the Lakers' off-season.

-- Lakers.com's Mike Trudell has a sit-down one-on-one with Barnes in the video below.

Tweet(s) of the Day: "The #Cavs have talked to Shannon Brown, agent Mark Bartelstein says, but not serious. Doesn't seem like it is going to happen. Brown wants to play for the Lakers and the Lakers want him back. He'll likely eventually sign there, this is all about haggling over $. Sources said Lakers are trying to trade Sasha Vujacic wfirst round pick to get his salary off books. They tried to do it for Delonte West. If they move Vujacic, and there's a decent chance they will, Brown will likely be back in LA. #Cavs stuff sounds like just a flirtation." -- PDcavsinsider (Cleveland Plain Dealer's Cavaliers beat reporter Brian Windhorst).

Reader Comment of the Day: "Just today I read an article on new findings that drinking alcohol helps with arthritis (U.K. researchers). Perhaps Ron can give Kobe some pointers."  -- 63 Footer

1. John Hollinger is an idiot and stat addict.

2. Hearing T-Pain is short for "tinnitius pain" because everytime I hear that idiot it cause such psychic dischord that I must restrain the urge to begin smashing the offending soundsystem with an aluminum baseball bat.

3. Delonte West as a Laker? HELL NO!!!

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Wow, John Hollinger is taking his hate of the Lakers to laughable porportions. He picked the Magic to win in 6 games in 2009, and now this patheic article. Whats that thing he goes by? PER? It really has nothing to do with basketball, this is not baseball, this is not an individual and team game. It's a team game period.

Nice quote Edwin. I have a quick thought. In Biblical times, parents would usually give their child a name that they hoped would reflect their character or grow up characterizing them. For example, my name Nemaia(polynesian version of Nehemiah)means "Consoled by God". It's funny because other names sound nice and have a beautiful meaning, but because the individuals with such names changed for the worse or didn't reflect what their names meant, there is a stigma attached to the name and so we rarely if ever find anyone named Lucifer, Judas or Absalom(King David's son who rebelled-name meant "Father is peace"). My wife and I plan on naming our baby boy Absalom because of the meaning and it sounds so regal. Anyways, what's in a name?

KobeMVP888,

Good to see ya.

"Delonte West as a Laker? HELL NO!!!"

Agreed. Part Celtic, part Cavalier? All Frankenstein, if you ask me. That's like a Decepticon having the Autobot Matrix at a GoBot party. Not cool.

DBDH!

So somebody here (I think was phred) came up with this plan. We sign Delonte, then LeFail's mom will blow kisses to DW. LeGone gets angry and throw the game.
-
Apparently this plan is on the way...

"If we wait and let Sasha's deal expire, and then sell the #1 pick, we pay 10 million for Sasha + taxes, and get 3 million for the pick. That's a cost of 7 million, vs 16 million. "

Again Wes the pick doesn't have to be next year. It can be in the future like 2012 or 2013 or 2015. When the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol part of the deal was the Lakers 2008 and 2010 picks. The thing about the first rounder is A) Which team needs an expiring contract to get under the cap for next off season and B) Which team offers the best chance for the pick to be possibly a lottery pick or at the very least a mid first round?

The Knicks are a team noted for wanting salary dumps and willing to trade away draft picks but 1) their 2011 pick can be exchanged for Houston's as part of the McGrady trade unless the Knicks win the 1st overall pick and 2) Their 2012 pick is already sent to Houston unless it becomes a top 5 pick.

Example: In 2009 the New England Patriots sent Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders for basically a salary dump. They also got Oakland's 2011 First Round pick. The Patriots gambled that the Raiders' season would still be bad enough for them to warrant a top 10 pick in 2011 that would be good enough to draft a top notch talent for Seymour who was still in his prime but could only go down (In football age has more downward effect because of the many hits players take save for kickers and punters).

The Lakers are trying to trade Sasha for a 1st rounder since not only will it be a salary dump and the money can be used instead for Shannon (the traded exception will not be used since the Lakers own Shannon's early bird rights) but also in the future to possibly gain a lottery or at the very least a mid round pick to acquire future talent. The worst case is Sasha just staying and letting his contract expire but if the Lakers can not only get both but a good 1st round pick....do you blame them?

63 footer, Congratulations as Reader of the day.

yes, alcohol can get rid of the arthritis at the expense of the liver. this is the debit and credit of vices.

What a day in the life of Sasha and Shannon. When Matt and Theo were announced last week and no SB signings, it was a welcoming sign of new beginning for Sasha. He just dodged the bullet of being traded to hornets for CP3. On SB side, this could be his last hurrah with the Lakers, so the next day Mitch and his agent released a bulletin that Shannon could still be a Laker. Few days later, Sasha found from the blog that he is being moved to nowhere from hero in June to zero in July. As I said earlier, sasha will give the Lakers that money. In the first place, why did the Lakers signed for $5M a year? Today, there is remorse and bemoaning too that he occupies a cap space, a luxury money and an expensive seat at the Staples. supposing he missed those two important free throws in June, we are today in a miserable state. Therefore, I say Lakers should swallow the contract, go for it and save in other avenues. You are the Champ for the last two years and therefore act like one.

"3. Delonte West as a Laker? HELL NO!!!"

Jon the only reason they would want Delonte West is for the salary dump. The Lakers would cut Delonte ASAP because they would then have to pay only $500,000 of his $4 million contract.

Happy BDay MRS. LAKER MIKE!!

True Nemaia. A name is just a name until the person who carries it gives meaning to it. Like D'Fish, at a first glance we will say, he is a rock, a Laker hero and a man of integrity. Once DF posted then we found his true identity as a fishy character who smells bad after three posts. There may be a stigma or good impression in a name but in the end, it is really hard to judge a person by the name alone.

Also, put me in the KEEP SACHA BANDWAGON

KB Blitz,

"Jon the only reason they would want Delonte West is for the salary dump."

I'd be okay with it if the ONLY time Delonte was allowed on court was when we played the Meatheads and Delonte would just get real close to LeBron and begin describing in intimate detail the romantic nature os his relationship with LeZero's mom.

That's it, okay?

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

-- ESPN.com's John Hollinger argues the Lakers are one of the biggest off-season losers? Hmmm, not sure which Laker team he's talking about. The Lakers didn't do what Miami did because they already had that base in place (insider subscription required).

RESPONSE:

hahaha insider subscription required? What audacity to even think that I am going to subscribe to some glorified typist with command over a written english to tell me what they think about the NBA when I have brain to compute and function and arrive at my own conclusion. It is a day light robbery!

FARSIDE - Haha good point. After all, there is no incentive to describe when I provided the CliffsNotes version

MM

@JON K, SIR that Birthday wish to Mrs.Laker Mike was...OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!! KUDOS!!

Edwin,

Couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks for the response.

mamba - Bynum bandwagon,

Even the Bynum bashers and those who wanted to trade him likely wish him a speedy recovery as they too are Laker fans first.
After all, he's worth more in a trade if he's healthy.

"I'd be okay with it if the ONLY time Delonte was allowed on court was when we played the Meatheads and Delonte would just get real close to LeBron and begin describing in intimate detail the romantic nature os his relationship with LeZero's mom."

Again Jon K. If they *cut* Delonte West from the team as soon as they got him they would only have to spend $500,000 instead of the $ 4 million. He wouldn't be on the team just making the Lakers play $500k so they wouldn't have to pay Sasha who didn't have a similar option on his contract.

Would that be ok?

>>>"Delonte West as a Laker? HELL NO!!!"
>>>The Lakers are trying to trade Sasha for a 1st rounder since not only will it be a salary

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. As KB Blitz correctly pointed out, if the Lakers trade for Delonte West, it's only because his contract is only partially guaranteed. The idea would be, instead of paying Sasha 5 million this season, they could pay off 500K to Delonte West and dump him, saving them 10 million in salary and luxury tax (Sasha makes about 5.5 million).

But KB Blitz has things mixed up. The Lakers wouldn't be GETTING a 1st round pick. They would be GIVING a team a first round pick to get them to take on the last year of Sasha's contract.

The thing I find really ironic is that Sasha's not really a bad player. The one season he was given significant minutes, he played decent defense and hit over 40% of his 3-point shots. If I had to choose between him and Jason Kapono (or maybe even Kyle Korver), I'd pick Sasha for the better defense. Sasha suffers from playing on a team behind the best player in the league. If Sasha had gone to some crappy team like Minnesota or Washington on his last contract and gotten 30 minutes a game, people would be looking at HIM like Korver and the other 3-point specialists in the league. Getting traded to a crappy team might be the best thing that ever happens to Sasha.

I think the whole thing comes down to Sasha vs Shannon. I think if they had their druthers, the Lakers would prefer to keep Shannon and let Sasha go. So the attempted Sasha trade is to get Sasha's 5 million plus off the books NOW instead of next summer, thus allowing them to re-sign Shannon without going even deeper into luxury tax. Shannon and Sasha fill a similar role for the Lakers - Shannon's a bit better defender and other than Sasha's one good season, Shannon's a bit better shooter as well.

So that's all it is - it isn't about wanting Delonte West. It's basically trading Sasha and a first round draft pick for Shannon, if you want to think about it that way.

OMG!
What a great way to start the day!
Mitch has finally come to his senses and is going to dump the 5-million dollar hole called Sasha! Oh joy! Then we can sign Shannon and Ebanks and our team is complete!

PG - Fish/Blake
SG - Kobe/Shannon
SF - Artest/Barnes/Ebanks
PF - Gasol/Odom/Caracter
C - Bynum/Gasol/Ratliff

This is assuming Luke will not play due to injury. If he does, he will replace Ebanks of course, who will be on the inactive roster. We could also use an inexpensive combo guard who is willing to get little if any PT as a 12th or 13th man to cover us in case of an injury.

By the way - good observation on West KB Blitz. I was about to post the same thing and you beat me to it. So many knowledgeable folks on this blog.....

MM - thanks for the RCD! Wow. I can honestly say that with the amount of vodka intake I have, I feel absolutely no pain.

John Hollinger? No hits for him. I miss Jim Murray. One can be a good journalist and still be pro-sports. This lack of data hate spewing... I need more vodka.

Add me to any Happy Birthday bandwagons or buses. I'm all for birthdays (especially when one considers the alternative).

Gotta be slow when they're writing about the food at Staples. Who can eat when watching a game?

I wish Bynum all the best in his surgery and get well soon, big guy!

I like Sasha. He was already playing well until he got injured. I'm thinking he's going to bounce back in his contract year. I still have faith in a scrappy defender and hopefully his stroke will be consistent. I have more faith in Sasha shooting free throws than I have in Kobe (sometimes he only makes 1 of 2). I'd like to keep Sasha for this year and let his contract expire after the season. I feel that the Lakers are going all out for the 3-peat and not necessarily to save money this season.

Hollinger is a masochist. He loves when all the Laker fans comment on his articles because it makes it look like he has devoted readership. Treat him as a troll.

MM/FCM: A request from PLG. Can we please, please, please try to get a live chat with one of the Lakers. Try Ron-Ron or Crazy #2 (MB9). They are loony enough to do something like this.

It would be awesome to outscoop the BSPN blog and very cool to let them know that this LAT Blog fam is:

1) a group of knowledgeable bball folks
2) diehard Laker fans
3) open to a pair of Laker tickets at any point in time (even against the Clippers - Jon K)

Thanks - PLG

Jon K,

While I understand your hatred of the stat hound, John Hollinger, I suggest you
remain calm. The reason:

Every idiotic thing he says is fuel for the Black Mamba.

I think D-Will pointed to this in his exit interview during the playoffs. I believe
he specifically pointed to Barkley.

I will not only wish Bynum to get well but to be the best as he can be. On his 5th year, he should be the beast that LakerTom has alluded too. Where is the beast on just being "well"? Being well is just continuation of being a mediocre Center who gets injured year in and year out while we, the fans keep on wishing him Get Well every season. At age 23 this should be a banner year Drew as the best among the beasts. Anything short of being the best, Kareem failed as an astute teacher.

Someone add me to the Keep Sasha bandwagon or caravan or whatever's rolling out there these days. I think just for sinking those 2 critical FT's in Game 7 he deserves a shot to contribute to the 3-peat. Just for that. They were huge, pressure-filled FT's and the boy had nothing but ice water running through his veins. Cold. Calculating. Swish. Swish. Nothing but net. He's come a long way - he still has a frenetic dribbling style, but he seems to be much more in control on offense. With Blake - as opposed to Farmar - my guess is he'll be more confident as well. His defense has always been pesky and he's usually good for frustrating the opponents he ends up guarding. Really, who doesn't want to join his fan club? AND he provides eyebrow-taming moments. What's not to love?

ABOUT LAKERS TOUGHNESS...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some very interesting quotes from Mitch regarding Matt Barnes, Andrew Bynum, and toughness:
http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/news/story?id=5415731
Here are the key excerpts:
~
"Early on it didn't seem like we had the resources available to sign Matt and even when he became available at a lower number, I wasn't sure that ownership would commit but it didn't take long really for them to commit and I think that's a credit to Jim and Jerry Buss that they want to win," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. "They sense the implications of being in a position of winning three in a row and I'm sure, like the rest of us, we watch and see what's taking place in other cities with teams loading up, so the competitive nature kicks in."
~
"I think it was a conscious effort to get tougher," Kupchak said. "We didn't add [Ron Artest] because he's a 25 points a game scorer, we added him because of his defensive ability [and] his toughness that he brings to the court. ANDREW BYNUM IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO US AND I WOULDN'T SAY THAT YOU LUMP HIM INTO A CATEGORY WITH MATT AND KOBE AND RON, BUT HE IS A BIG, PHYSICAL PLAYER AND YOU NEED PLAYERS ON YOUR TEAM THAT PROVIDE THAT TYPE OF ABILITY. I thought a couple years ago when Andrew got hurt we weren't very, I guess 'tough' is the word, Kobe may have been our toughest player, but Andrew came back this year and we added Ron Artest and now Matt Barnes is going to help even more so."
Delonte is now with Minnesota right. Can they trade him after acquiring him for Ramon Sessions? I guess they could, but why would they?
If we do anything with Minnesota it should be Sasha for Delonte and OUR #1 draft pick for the rights to Rubio! Wishful thinking...back to reality.
RCOTD + 63 FOOTER = ...OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!!! KUDOS & CONGRATS.
justa -
Sorry man - there is no "keep Sasha" bandwagon because noone wants him! He's a 10 million dollar hole (counting luxury tax) who dribbles worse than Swen Nater and doesn't even shoot 3's as well as Shannon - who's younger, faster, and more athletic to boot. Plus he obnoxiously fist pumps like Kobe shooting a game winner every time he makes his one basket per game.
His only asset is his cool girlfriend, but she'll probably dump him when the Lakers do. I'd consider keeping him as backup for the vet minimum if we could, but there are much better ways for us to spend that 10 mil - like signing Shannon for 3, a cheap 5th guard for the vet minimum. and letting Dr Buss pocket the difference.
LTLF... I saw the links but do not believe them. Trading Sasha would remove what is likely our best 3-point shooter. It would also leave us with no option to back up Kobe than Brown, whom I think is not worth what he is asking. At any rate, I understand your points and still think we will keep Sasha and let his contract expire. The poll that I would be interested to see is whether Lakers fans prefer Sasha or Shannon to back up Kobe.
KOBEMVP... Excellent response to Blitz. Other than his continued biased opinions of Drew and blind support of Hobbitmage, I don’t really have any problems with Blitz. He has a hard time keeping his logic in sequence at times but is a die-hard Lakers fan and loyal Lakers blogger whom you can count on chiming in. At least the guy played and understands the game and how to play it, which is more than I can say for certain other fans.
TAKING POLLS: Who is a better Band Wagon leader? mamba24 or lewstrs? And, who of the two has anger management problem?
Posted by: CURIOUS GEORGE | July 28, 2010 at 11:29 AM
(01) BandWagon Leader - LEWSTRS IN A LANDSLIDE
(02) Who has The Anger Management Problems - That Freakin Lunatic Mamba24.
Did I pass? Huh, Huh? ROFLMAO!!
MAMBA24
"Let's see. Your alter ego (whatever his moniker is) said some extremely disrespectful things about Laker Tom and then you support his comments by calling LT "immature.""
Who died and made you blog police? You and your "brief" stay here thus far made you naive to what the blog here does. Why don't you go after me when I got after Pfunk36 and his idiotic messages about Luke Walton? Or when I go against DFish and his reckless remarks? Oh that's right I'm not allowed to post idiotic remarks about players yet they can huh?
Laker Tom is a good person but he isn't immune to immaturity remarks by him. You want to know how the feud started between LT and Hobbit? Hobbit posted that DJ Mbenga would still be okay shotblocking wise then Laker Tom and has fit and bashes Hobbit for even thinking DJ Mbenga is good even shot blocking wise.
So it's perfectly fine for Laker Tom to through childish remarks at times yet no one else does? Oh that's hypocricy.
"The "olive branch" meant .. and let me be clear .. that you refrain from personally attacking people with condescending, degrading, insulting, belittling and/or otherwise unnecessary comments that fall within the purview of "personal attacks." Those are MY conditions for a cease fire and they apply to me as well. I refrained from such conduct after I extended the olive branch, yet you ignored the conditions of my cease fire, and forced me to counter-attack yet AGAIN."
Oh fine I see. So it's ok for other people to attack other people yet I can't? I go defend Edwin did I hear from you? No. Yet when it going to explain to laker Tom that he has been immature about things in the past just as Hobbit did with that remark it makes me criminal? Yea such naivete ok for you because you have been inthe blog in less than a month.
"The next time you preview one of your posts, kindly be a little bit more careful before you hit the "Post" button. Fair enough?"
I do whatever it takes to post. I do not go and break oaths but then again you ain't my daddy, isn't my god to be worshipped, and frankly you don't set the rules here that's MM's job. I did not insult you yet you go and insult people who doesn't share your ultra-optimistic view on Andrew Bynum. Fine that's fine by me I gave you a chance but you want to go breaking oaths because YOU feel like it? 1) You didn't outline the rules when we agreed to a cease-fire and 2) I gave my bargain and neither attacked Bynum nor Laker Tom (I never called him an idiot just being immature about things) yet ok for you to go and blast people.
If you want to save this cease-fire I'm more than willing to do so. but because YOU broke your own rules and decides to counter attack...fine we'll go at it. I did not wish to get it bad and decided to stay away from your posts but then you broke YOUR rules (You did don't try to squirm about it)...it's ON!
I'm not afraid of you nor do I lose sleep/typing over you. So bring it on. I bring facts while you bring "Look at this". Hogan is more mature about disagreements with me about Bynum than you could do in 10 life times.
Oh and again: ZERO MVP's, ZERO All-NBA First teams, ZERO times leading his Lakers, TWICE riding Kobe's coattails to 2 titles, and getting $14 million contract yet NOWHERE the talent level of LBJ/Wade or even Bosh. Just as overpaid as Kenyon Martin and Jason Richardson.
I'd like to join the two current Wagons, thanks. Oh, might like to give Sasha one more real chance to show his stuff.
I'm kinda on the fence on the best Bandwagon blogger. I mean, they are both GREAT! Now there's a decision maker for you, ha, ha!
LakerTom - that would be an interesting poll.
I liked Shannon, up until the Dunk Contest fiasco and hurt hand, and then he just faded away into bad thinking and worse shots; but I believe Sasha might actually have a reasonably good year (at least for him). I'm hoping his shot might come back (contract year & he's getting some regularly from Maria, which should calm him down; it would me), also, he can't really be crazy emotional with guys like Ron and now Barnes around. I would think those guys would just look over at him and go "Stop that ish right now!"
But, who knows. I trust our FO lately. And I trust this team (though only time will tell).
@ROCKY, Sir I am sorry to announce that it is indeed true that the young devilish Delonte took Liberties with the young Princess James Mom. It is said that is why Cleveland lost those games because the lil Biatch Princess Jimmy got into a hizzy fit and threw them. If he threw them or not I do not know. But our prayers go out to The Princess at this time of sorrow. But I think he better watch out for that young devil DWade who is newly divorced and on the prowl. OH SWEET JESUS!! Laker Tom,
I'm not sure how I would vote on your proposed poll.
I really lean towards Sasha and it's hard to forget those 2 free throws at the end of game 7.
On the other hand, were those 2 free throws worth $10 mill? The Lakers still may have won anyway.
But then, if he had missed them both and the Lakers lost on a last second 3 pointer, ugh.
And if that happened, looking back, would the Lakers have rather won and paid the $10 mill next year?
Ok, now, if it were Brown who had Sasha's contract, I would be ok with them shopping the contract, so looking at it that way, I prefer Sasha over Brown, but when $10 mill is on the line that does change things.
That's one big boatload of money and if they consider Sasha and Brown even close to equal, it does make sense to try and get him gone.
So if the Lakers go catabolic and trade their own guys for their own guy, I'm definitely going to give Mitch an F for his off season.
Hey, I'm all about saving money, but this is the Lakers, not the Clippers. Don Sterling is the master of being cheap.
The last time the Lakers did something even remotely this stupid was when Jerry West traded Peeler for an unnamed second rounder. STUPID. Yeah, I know he was trying to save money so he could spend it on Shaq, but I'm pretty sure he could have least gotten a few second rounders if he shopped around. Peeler was pretty decent. I'd argue that they (Grizzlies) returned the favor, but then I'd contradict myself since we swapped Marc+ Critt + expiring for disgruntled highly paid player older brother Pau... that deal was pretty straight up (contrary to what the media repeats).
Not sure why I'm going down memory lane there... but yeah, you're trading your own assets for your own asset? Hey, I know Sasha is overpaid, but who's fault is that?? (It's not the fan's fault, and that's who will pay the price)
Oh and again: ZERO MVP's, ZERO All-NBA First teams, ZERO times leading his Lakers, TWICE riding Kobe's coattails to 2 titles, and getting $14 million contract yet NOWHERE the talent level of LBJ/Wade or even Bosh. Just as overpaid as Kenyon Martin and Jason Richardson. Posted by: KB Blitz | July 28, 2010 at 11:50 AM
(01) LAKERTOM - OWNER
(02) RDLEE - DRIVER Praying for Bynum and the surgeons!
(03) NEMAIA FALETOGO - RIDING SHOTGUN - With you on that partner
(04) #4
(05) MR & MRS. LAKERMIKE - SPIRITUAL HEALERS - GOOD VIBRATIONS . . . Today is Bynum's knee surgery AND my WIFE'S birthday. She is a great, GREAT woman and has agreed to share some of her festive and life-giving energy from this special day to Andrew's body. Trust me ~ nothing but good coming from this surgery! (Special thanks to JUSTA for making wifey feel a part of the family here, and thus wooing such a gift from her!)
(06) JUSTANOTHERMAMBAFAN - SPECIAL HEALING ASSISTANT
(07) MAMBA24 - Get well soon Andrew we need you & THE BEAST!
(08) LOBGTIMELAKERLOVER - Drew's gonna be just fine. It was a few foreign bodies, nothing huge. If he was able to play through the finals and be effective, then it's not a huge stretch to believe he'll heal up great. Also, if this was a big operation, then I have to believe the organization would push for a more expedient date, vs this late date.
09) RAIDERSLAKER1980 - Since I'm at work, I'll take a shot of water and yell cheers to a healthy AB17, would love to see his career take off as a realible, healthy anchoring center..so down goes my shot of water CHEERS .
(10) DON’T BLAME DEL HARRIS - Maybe AB could get Elden Campbell's cadaver parts for his knee surgery. After all, Big E was such a stiff! I remember we used to say "Dead Man Walking" whenever the Lake Show ran the break.
(11) LEWSTRS - I've always been in AB's corner, and I hope his surgery goes well today...Small minuscus tears are usually just a basic procedure these days...AB please heal fast, and let's show all your doubters what you can do in a full healthy season...
(12) MAGIC PHIL - Put me in the PRAY FOR BYNUM TO GET WELL – BANDWAGON
(13) ART-FL LAKERS FAN - Even the Bynum bashers and those who wanted to trade him likely wish him a speedy recovery as they too are Laker fans first. After all, he's worth more in a trade if he's healthy.
(14) 63- FOOTER – ADD ME TO THE BANDWAGONS
(15) SAMLL - I wish Bynum all the best in his surgery and get well soon, big guy!
(16) EDWIN GUECO - will not only wish Bynum to get well but to be the best as he can be. On his 5th year, he should be the beast that LakerTom has alluded too. Where is the beast on just being "well"? Being well is just continuation of being a mediocre Center who gets injured year in and year out while we, the fans keep on wishing him Get Well every season. At age 23 this should be a banner year Drew as the best among the beasts. Anything short of being the best, Kareem failed as an astute teacher.
(17) D(EREK) J(ETER)
(18) NEWMEXICOLAKERLIFER - Please put me on The Andrew Bynum get well bandwagon
Bynum will be 100% after his surgery and he will be an ALL-STAR this upcoming season! If he aint and gets hurt this blog will blow up with trade demands. And I will be the first one wanting him gone if he cant stay healthy this season.
Nemaia - thanks for kicking the knowledge on names.
Go Laker Mike! It's your birthday! We're going to party like it's your birthday...
Rocky,
"Did Delonte West really smash LeBron's mom?"
That's the word on the street in Akron, Ohio, yo. My "best" source is the baby daddy of Gloria James' best friend. He told me he talked to his former girlfriend and she confirmed it through Gloria.
So, that's what I heard.
LeBron supposedly found out about it during the playoffs against Boston, ergo his thousand yard stare during certain games.
@TIM-4-SHOW, slight correction sir, it's Mrs. Laker Mikes birthday. But it's all good I can still fit you on! Lol!
I wouldn't spend a dime to read Hollingers BS statistics and dumb articles but how can he seriously call the Lakers one of the losers in the offseason??? Dude, are you high?
Ratliffe for Mbenga = a wash, neither is/was expected to do much.
Blake for Farmar = much improved at that position
Barnes for Powell = a no frikkin' brainer
Fish is back = a frikkin' genious move
The starters are intact and the bench has improved significantly. Our stars have opted to rest this summer and all will be at full force by training camp (Bynum maybe 80%).
Tell me again why we're losers??? I consider a loser a dumbass like Hollinger who's stats almost assured teh Cavs would be holding the trophy right about now. How 'bout apples loser???
I am on the fence with any proposed Sasha trade.
And I was actually thinking that Luke/Sasha would be traded before year-end with some magic trick from Mitch. But now the Lakers will probably get insurance money for Luke and maybe an injured player exception of some sort (I have no clue on all the rules like KB, LT, etc). So, Sasha + our current picks seem to be on the proverbial chopping block.
However, we all have to realize that every person except KB24 is a "tradeable asset". Injury or not, defensive presence or not - they are all tradeable. While there may be a lot of time/money invested with ceretain players, at some point it will pain people to lose 1 or 2 guys we thought would survive any trade talk. Ane we love them nonethless except Smush and Kwame.
Not to be Debbie downer but I am a realist. PLG
Thanks for the "Champion" remix, that was off thee chain!
Blitz has absolutely no problem "keeping his logic in sequence." He is an unbiased reader of the lay of the land. That's why, LakerTom, you have troubles with him.
Call me greedy but I want both Shannon and Sasha. They both bring different skill sets. Sasha 3pt shooting and Shannon's explosiveness. Gotta spend money to make money. I thought we were the Yankees of the NBA. Anyway if we could only keep one I'd give Shannon the slight edge cause Blake and Barnes could fill some of the 3pt void.
Mamba24,
" But I think he better watch out for that young devil DWade who is newly divorced and on the prowl."
This IS where it gets interesting.
The thing is LeBron has a baby mamma who lives with him who takes care of his kids, but LeBron won't marry her so he can take certain liberties with his personal life.
Now the guy is moving down to South Beach with the newly divorced Dwayne Wade after being cooped up in Akron/Cleveland his whole life.
There's a joke in Ohio that goes simply "Remember, girls! When you leave Ohio, you're a four again!" Thus the reason the series "Hot In Cleveland" makes sense.
So, the only place that I've seen that competes with California women is South Beach... and that's where LeBron is going. We all know how much he likes to have fun, considering that he's constantly clowning around on the court. I expect there to be distractions for the Meatheads.
What do we play for? RINGS!!!
GO LAKERS!!!
My take on the Sasha move is that they want to sign both Ebanks and Caracter to contracts but they can't do it with Sasha on the bench or his contract on the books. If they have to keep Sasha, I say they sign Caracter only ansend Ebanks to the D.
I'm not a big fan of the idea of Sasha leaving.
Jon K,
" We all know how much he likes to have fun". That, my friend, is the wildest understatement of the year. Check this out:
http://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/07/-espn-mysteriously-pulls.html.php
and the actual suppressed article (click to enlarge):
http://img821.imageshack.us/i/bloglebronespn.jpg/
Hollinger works for ESPN and ESPN has been bought out by the LeBrownnose group. Nothing it publishes is reliable, or when it is, it's pulled within minutes. But Lebron's egomania is for definitely for real and lasting.
Given the inflation of his ego and its possible effect on his cranium, the dude may end up in an asylum before he gets his first ring.
Mamba24,
Do we have issues?
(1) As soon as the poll went up, I wished AB17 well.
(2) As soon as I saw the bandwagon, I requested an add, noting the original post. You've so far ignored me.
(3) There are other slights which I won't go into on this board.
Please correct the record. Please add me to the HB Mrs Laker Mike bandwagon, too.
Tony Hayward talks about the injustice that has led to his pitiable suffering and is quoted as saying, "Sometimes you step off the pavement and get hit by a bus"... as he walks away with $18 m in severance pay!
The question on everyone's mind should be: who's living in a bigger fantasy world, Hayward or Lebron? Their common belief in entitlement dwarfs anything we've seen since Caligula (as Rick Chandler points out).
We should thank the true and just basketball gods that Kobe is still chasing after championships rather than ego-inflating chimera in Vegas hotels. (OK, his basic annual salary beats Hayward's payout... but hell, he works for it and hasn't yet polluted either an ocean or Chris Paul's character).
PG - Fish/Blake
SG - Kobe/Shannon
SF - Artest/Barnes/Ebanks
PF - Gasol/Odom/Caracter
C - Bynum/Gasol/Ratliff
With Blake at Point, Brown is the better partner than Sasha. Sasha would do well with a Derrick Rose PG.
The advantage of Brown is he can both finish at the rim and shoot spot up 3's. Brown is also a better defender and can guard big PG's (Deron Williams) and SG's (Dwade) when Sasha can't.
Sasha is a good defender only on less athletic players like Korver, Miller, Kapono but not the likes of Deron, Dwade, Paul, Rose, Westbrook, Tyreke Evans etc, etc. Where Shannon is a better match up for this athletic big guards.
Shannon is a logical choice to keep if you can get rid of Sasha to make room for Brown. I think it is a no brainer!
IT IS ALSO OBVIOUS since Brown came to the Lakers, Sasha's mintues has been reduced, because PHIl prefers to play Brown as a back Guard at both spots.
Brown has been eating up both Farmar and Sasha's minutes, even while JF and SV's been in Jackson's system for longer time.
With huge DOLLARS TO SAVE and a chance to get the BETTER FIT player to IMPROVE THE TEAM what else can be better?
Farmar and Sasha is now Blake and Brown!
"I am on the fence with any proposed Sasha trade."
Posted by: PsychedLakerGirl | July 28, 2010 at 12:28 PM
=====
I'm not on the fence. I want Sasha to be Kobe's primary back up and would rather see the crowd pleasing Shannon Brown go. Here's why:
Sasha did everything well in the playoffs from what I observed, except when he got a little too macho with Gorin Dragic at a SOMEWHAT critical point in Game 6 of that series. Oops. We had a 91-76 lead with 11:18 to go in the 4th quarter in Phoenix; I don't think any of us thought the outcome of that game was really in question.
Sasha shot 43.5% from the field, including 40% from downtown in his 10 playoff games and he stayed within the offense and played great team defense. He's now been to 3 NBA Finals, which is invaluable, plays either guard position and he knows and accepts his role at both ends of the floor. I could care less what he does during the 82 game practice season, although a part of me would rather have him not worry about Shannon Brown taking his minutes. The point is that Sasha knows what it takes in the playoffs. Who would you rather have at the line with a 2 point lead and 11 seconds left in Game 7 of the NBA Finals with the championship on the line against the Boston Celtics, Shannon Brown or Sasha Vujacic? I know Phil Jackson's answer to that question.
I think Sasha has grown up quite a bit. I hope is stays.
Blitz has absolutely no problem "keeping his logic in sequence." He is an unbiased reader of the lay of the land. That's why, LakerTom, you have troubles with him.
Posted by: Otis | July 28, 2010 at 12:29 PM
=====
I beg to differ. You are implying that because Blitz thinks Bynum is highly overrated, that he is somehow "unbiased." No, he is simply biased toward his opinion on the issue. The fact you you might agree with his logic or even find it to be logical at all does not mean he has a better understanding of the "lay of the land." In fact, back-to-back championships and the support of the Lakers organization would tend to contradict that he's an "unbiased reader of the lay of the land." He simply takes the other point of view, which is clearly fueled by Bynum's injury history and tries to spin the argument in his favor with statistics and by comparing him to players like, for example, Shaquille O'Neal in his prime. Yes, Blitz "keeps HIS logic in sequence," but in this reader's opinion it is neither unbiased or logical as it applies to Andrew Bynum ... it is only logical and unbiased to Blitz and people who think like Blitz.
The LOGICAL, HONEST and UNBIASED Bynum detractors simply ADMIT that they are worried/concerned that his entire career will be marred by injuries. Otherwise, they see his tremendous upside and potential. They don't support their fears with ridiculous statistics that are being viewed by Blitz in a vacuum. According to Blitz's logic, Bynum's specific role on THIS Lakers team is irrelevant and only his actual numbers count. He is the Lakers' #3 option and, as such, is not expected to average 20-10 per game. Blitz uses his logic to take Bynum's lower numbers and compare him to players who are either the #1 or #2 options on their teams. This is illogical and demonstrates poor vision of the "lay of the land."
No, Laker Tom has troubles with KB Blitz for all the RIGHT reasons.
(01) JUSTANOTHERMAMBAFAN - OWNER - Someone add me to the Keep Sasha bandwagon or caravan or whatever's rolling out there these days. I think just for sinking those 2 critical FT's in Game 7 he deserves a shot to contribute to the 3-peat. Just for that. They were huge, pressure-filled FT's and the boy had nothing but ice water running through his veins. Cold. Calculating. Swish. Swish. Nothing but net. He's come a long way - he still has a frenetic dribbling style, but he seems to be much more in control on offense. With Blake - as opposed to Farmar - my guess is he'll be more confident as well. His defense has always been pesky and he's usually good for frustrating the opponents he ends up guarding. Really, who doesn't want to join his fan club? AND he provides eyebrow-taming moments. Don't Blame Del Harris!
MAMBA24 is the CEO of Bandwagons...I'm just at his disposal...No vote needed...
KobeMVP888: "I think Sasha has grown up quite a bit. I hope is stays." Fair enough argument.
However, I would argue Sasha's maturity has probably been the most inconsistent aspect of his game.
My memory of Sasha was having a great year when his contract was up and being one of the consistent leaders of the bench mob. He hit the big payday and has since gone missing. He complained all the time with Jordy about pt, he had attitude at every turn and was benched by PJ at various times this past season.
Perhaps his sprained ankle saved him because he had no choice but to warm the bench. So, it made him hungry again and as you noted he came back when it did count with a better attitude.
However, now we have a new and improved bench. His minutes will be tempered - will his attitude?
Or since this is another contract year, will he be a negative in the locker room? If he starts complaining - how do you think Barnes, Blake, Ratcliff, LO, etc will take that? The have all agreed to accept their roles AND accept much lower $$. Even less than Sasha.
I hope you are right about his attitude change. However, I don't think the new bench will put up with his girly whining. At the first sign of discontent, Sasha is gone. So back to my original thought process - Sasha will be traded before year-end. Mitch is already plotting.
Please put me on the Sasha bandwagon..please no Delonte West..Sasha is a pest on d-fense, and I believe with Blake running point off the bench he will get more oppurtunities to stroke..just dont dribble Machine
Laker4lyf!GO LAKERS!I smell 3peat in the,men!
Delonte West in now in the Minnesota Timberwolves,right.And I've heard that that Minnesota is planning to waive him.If the Lkaers is trying to trade Sasha for Delonte, why not offer sasha plus our future 1st round pick in exchange for Delonte West and the rights of Ricky Rubio?We can save money coz we delonte's contract is partially guaranteed,so,we can waive his contract anytime and we will have Rubio in time when Fisher retires.And let's sign Shannon Brown to back-up Kobe.
=====
The reality is that with an 8 man rotation of Pau, Bynum, LO, Artest, Barnes, Kobe, Fish, Blake, it really doesn't matter who occupies 9-12 on this team. If Sasha's traded, I certainly won't lose any sleep over it, nor will I lose any sleep if we don't sign Shannon Brown and Mitch winds up replacing both of them. Of the two, I prefer Sasha because I just think he's better programmed for Phil's system at this point, he's 6'7" and plays both guard positions and has experienced the NBA Finals from being a perceived goat in '08 to being a bit of a hero this time around. So yes, I hope we keep him and, as you so eloquently stated, I hope this attitude change is permanent.
May I compliment you for the way you hone in on the little things, by the way. These are the things that are most important for role players.
Add me to the welcome wagon LEW, and yeah Shannon or Sasha will be in the team likely*, but as long as they have somebody whos able to emulate what they did for less $, I will not be in a fetal position anytime soon, crying about why this person left or not. I just think Kobe needs a suitable replacement at the 2, a legitimate one.
If I were to choose between Sasha and Brown,I would prefer for Vuyacic coz he can play both position more than Shannon.I know sasha will really try to improve this year knowing that this is his contract year,If he'll mess up this year,he knows that his future is also at the mess,while brown with his fresh contract signing will tend to relax.If Mitch could trade Sasha in exchange for Fernandez,then it would be great coz fernandez will be a solid back up for Kobe.Do it,Mitch.
I heard that the trailblazer is trying to trade Fernandez even for a future 2nd round pick.why not trade vuyacic for Fernandez?
No, not Delonte West.
I would love that scenario in a heart beat. But i am not sure Portland will like that at all.
Delonte is probably the best SG out there. I think Shannon's girth limits him somewhat, look at Ariza he had the perfect lengthy body. Sasha helps us chase players and tire them bc of that. In the same way Delonte is a better guard than Sasha or Brown. My 2 Cents
