This is from the rumor mill from ESPN (insider required so I cannot link):

Brown still on Cavs' radar
---------------------------------
Now that the Cavs have traded for Ramon Sessions, Ben Q. Rock reports via a source that the acquisition won't affect their interest in Shannon Brown.

Brown still hangs in the balance as a free agent. Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak said last week he's optimistic on Brown re-signing, and he expects it to happen in the coming weeks.

But it's possible the Cavs could overpay some for Brown -- he only made $1.9 million last season -- and the Lakers, who are deep into luxury tax, could let him walk.

New coach Byron Scott is looking to run an uptempo offense next season, and Brown's athleticism is often deadly on the fast break. So he could be a nice fit in that regard, though his shooting leaves a little to be desired.

OK Matt...here's the deal....

You're a Laker now. As such, all past incidents are forgotten. We accept you and will root hard for your success as part of our great team. The rest is up to you. You've got to earn the love!

Is it odd that nobody would sign the Superstars like TMac, AI and Shaq? GM's and coaches still admire their laden talents in their prime and capable of helping the team but also fear the disruptions on team's camaraderie and harmony especially when they insist their star status and entitlements. This happened to AI with Grizz' and being "awol" with Sixers.

Barnes can be accepted by Laker fans once they see his inner motivations in joining the team. For sure, fans will look at his sincerity how he will blend with PJ strategy on how he would react being in the 2nd team or playing less minutes. If Barnes will consider himself to be a Laker by the end of the season with or without a ring, then the fans will accept him wholeheartedly being an LA athlete. However, once they sense budding ambition just to ride along in getting a ring then use that fame as a bargaining chip on his next adventure, he will be like any journeyman using LAX as a lay over for another destination.

What's the matter with you? Is this what you've become, some Hollywood finnochio that cries like a woman?

He is acting very mature about it. Taking the high road and while he has disagreed he isn't going around and throwing mud like some 5 year old child would do. Edwin has his things but he is taking the high road on this one.

How long will u be Don Corleone? Just for today, this week or just to re-direct an attack without really giving your true name. That's an old trick buddy, identify your true self if you wish to get attention.

By the way I do enjoy your posts. Some how every time I read your posts, I get the feeling that you are giving a speech perched high up on a podium to the less experienced and young whopper snappers. Posted by: CURIOUS GEORGE | July 27, 2010 at 10:39 AM

And just what the Frak is wrong with that?
Mamba24

I still think that Matt is a great addition, and will be able to help transform the defense from good to great. So we are family right now, yes.

Curious George,

I don't mean to be a pompous fan who would dictate what it is and what should be our treatment with players. I'm just answering the headline of this thread like how I perceived fans would react. I could be wrong in reading the fate of a journeyman. By the way, I like the signing of Barnes as a defensive player, Lakers are much better team than they were last year. Like anybody here, I don't know why Matt left the other teams, he was ok with Nelson in GS then jumped to Phoenix. As soon as we noticed his upside, suddenly he is already with Magic. After one season with them and Magic was also a ring contender, hop in again to another teams from Toronto and ended up with the Lakers. With that as a background, you can't remove that doubt lingering with this particular player. Is he really sincere of being a Laker? What matters is his performance on the court and in the locker room? Who am I to be taken seriously by anyone or for that matter by any blogger?

Hey Matt Barnes, i would post on your twitter if i had access to it from work, but if youre reading this, Ive followed you all last year on Orlando and always wanted someone like you (as well as Artest) on our team. We need the fire and grit in our team; we are talented but not gritty.
I disliked you when you played junkyard style against Kobe, but that is just business and I respect that. I respected also that you still respect Kobe outside of the matchup.

I am very glad you came to play for us and relieved you did not sign with celtics or miami or some other.

You are a Laker now. Get Kobe's back. If you do night in and night out consistently ( i know you'll have off days) in your efforts, we will defend you as a true Laker.

Good luck Matt

>>>Is it odd that nobody would sign the Superstars like TMac, AI and Shaq?

Well, they're sorta 3 different cases:

Iverson signed last year with Philly and then acted like a primadonna when they didn't want play him as a starter or give him unlimited minutes.

TMac has been injured so much, teams probably worry if he has anything left.

And Shaq is somewhat declined and reportedly wants MORE than MLE money to play. And he's been an off-the-court disruption with every team he's played for. And bad-mouths every team he plays with after he's gone.

There are probably 20 teams (including the Lakers) that would sign any one of the three for a minimum contract, but with most teams over the salary cap, they don't want to spend 6 million a year for a player who's going to be a disruption and/or might not give them much on the court.

And I doubt any one of the three would accept signing for a minimum contract. In the immortal words of Latrell Sprewell, they can't feed their family for that.

>>>However, once they sense budding ambition just to ride along in getting a
>>>ring then use that fame as a bargaining chip on his next adventure, he will be
>>>like any journeyman using LAX as a lay over for another destination.

Sorta like Shannon Brown? (who opted out of his guaranteed contract with the Lakers to try to get mo money)

What's the implication by bringing my name up along with the others????

humanomaly

Curious George and to everybody,

Every time we are called elder or old we cringed a little closer to our grave. I don't know whether we or I can take it as a praise or a downgrade. Please treat me as your equal, maybe i was born a little earlier, blog here earlier but our opinion carries the same weight. If my phraseology was taken into context as an elder statesman, I apologized. I was born in this country and speak the way you do. There is nothing old on being respectful and courteous with one another, we all give our opinions freely without expecting something in return.

Another mistake: I was born in this country - "NOT born" that what I really meant.

What's the implication by bringing my name up along with the others????humanomaly Posted by: humanomaly (ow) | July 27, 2010 at 10:59 AM

Oh my God!! The whole Damn Blogg is at it. Stop this ISH! Stop it Now! I want everybody to take a time-out and meditate on the fact that you are fans of The 16 Time soon to be 17 time double 3-peat NBA Champion Freakin LA Lakers.
DO YOU REALIZE HOW FREAKIN LUCKY YOU ARE? WELL DO YOU?

@Edwin, don't sweat it brother. They just jealous of you man. They see the respect and weight you carry on the Blog so they want to tear you down. Frak them Brother. The people that count are in your corner and to those that aint..

Laker fans are the basketball analog of most pro-"wrestling" fans. We love to see a heal turn babyface. LA is where players seek redemtion or they're shown the bricks. Think back to Benoit Benjamin and how we felt about him when he was with the Clips and Seattle. He was one we loved to hate. Then he came to the Lakers and almost got a standing ovation when he hit the floor. We all thought Artest was a thug loser who should have been banned. We loved to see him get T'd up. Now he is our flavor of the week at SF. Glen Rice, Gary Payton, and others have sought to bring LA make the Lakers their team and we said Via Con Dios. As long as Barnes works himself into the team and doesn't expect the team be work around Matt Barnes, he'll be redeemed in the church of the purple and gold.

And the congregation says...

JR

What's the implication by bringing my name up along with the others?- Humanomaly 29 minutes

~~No implications, well we were discussing those sixties happenings in gentler fashion. If you think u should not be included and get dragged u into controversy, then that's fine too, no worries.

And the congregation says...Posted by: Jolly Rancher | July 27, 2010 at 11:07 AM

The Congregation says AMEN!!!! And I say...OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!!!!!!!!

The Lakers chemistry will come over the course of the 82 game practice season. The reality is that the pre-season is a waste of time and doesn't do a thing to prepare the players for what lies ahead. It will take time for Blake and Barnes to assimilate, especially Barnes, because of the complexities presented by the triangle from the wing positions. Just ask Artest. And Barnes won't have the time on the floor that Artest had last season, so hopefully he's a quick study.

The lead guard, on the other hand, has a much more defined role in the offense. If Jordan Farmar had simply accepted that role, he would be much further along and probably be the heir apparent to Fish, but his ego and drive refused to allow Phil's system to get the "better" of him. Steve Blake is, by nature, a much more selfless, mature player with a much higher basketball IQ, so I expect him to be in the flow of things by mid-season at the latest. Those two guys are the key in this equation.

Welcome aboard Matt Barnes!

LTLF,

Shannon Brown got two rings and wanted to test his marketability. Barnes rejected a better offer to join a perennial ring contender in order to go for higher offer. One got two and the other has no ring that's the difference.

Is this what you've become, some Hollywood finnochio that cries like a woman?

Don Corleone

WHAT THE HELL????? Dude - we just got rid of an idiot who doesn't know the difference between his hand and his azzzz - who are you to come on here and write more slurs about women? Did you really mean to go there?

Real Laker Girls

Amen, JR - amen.

Welcome aboard Matt Barnes!Posted by: KobeMVP888 | July 27, 2010 at 11:11 AM
KOBEMVP888, Why you do this to me? Now I got to say this ISH again...OUT FREAKIN STANDING SIR!!!!!!!

Thank you brother Mamba24, that's part of the test of being a lightning rod, see how many lightning you can parry and absorb. It's all done with curiosity as though we're in front of TSA inspector and immigration officer at the same time.

Edwin - if I may - I think when people refer to "elders" on here, they're referring to someone (like you) who has been around a long time on the blog. Not to a person's age. Also - I think you may have been a little too sensitive on SOME posts that have gone up. Regardless, your opinions and postings are much appreciated by the vast majority of us on here. Don't let some people harsh your buzz (so to speak)! You're a valuable member of the family. It really is all about the love - you know that! :)

Justa- Lord knows I know better than to step between and angry woman and the target of her ire, BUT it was just a line from the one movie (set in the late 40s at that) that teaches guys everything we need to know about life:

What day is it? - Monday Tuesday Thursday Wednesday...

What should I pack for my trip? - Leave the gun, take the cannoli...

I don't think there was any female insult intended there.

Take a breath, think about the closing seconds of Game 7 and let the peace, joy and power flow through you.

JUSSSSTTTTTTTTTAA!!! Oh I'm wounded. Do you know how many times I've longed for you to say that to me. OH SWEET JESUS. If you had said it even once to me in the last 4 years I would have been the happiest man on earth. But nooooooooooo! I just get table scraps and left overs. Very well I'll accept those! but only because you are Head of the Mamba Clan....(You do know this is the percoset talking don't you? :) . So I stand vigilant and remain your humble servant. Larry Holiway!
p.s I'm going to take a lil nap now. You really are a very nice person Justa.

Thanks for the props guys and gals, let's move on to the Lakers as the reason why we always come back to this blog.

If Shannon Brown is not signed, then we are done for the season. We welcome the 3 new Lakers plus the two draftees. It will not hurt our quest for 3peat only we will miss the Show and excitement.

Blazers are very much interested with CP3 and they have the personnel to trade with Hornets, one of them is Rudy Fernandez. If Shannon signs elsewhere, Rudy F is one on my wish list, how?

Be the peacemaker. Let the blog flow like a bubbling brook, full of love.Posted by: Gilbert Battung | July 27, 2010 at 11:28 AM

Gilbert Battung, you lil ol Zen master you. I'm going to flow like that brook my Brother and I thank you.

JR - so you were Don?? LOL!!! I'm sorry bro!! I thought we had a newbie stirring up crap!! No worries - I didn't know it was you and didn't get the movie reference...

Worst-case scenario, Matt Barnes can be our sacrificial double-technical, get tossed from the game takedown warrior, a la Rick Fox vs. Doug Christie in that one preseason game. Money well spent if you ask me. Oh, you didn't...

DBDH!

Mamba24?? What are you talking about?? I've always had your back on here, and I also recall saying nice things about you. Put down the percoset and step away from the vodka - it's doing you wrong, man!

The Kings-Lakers rivalry then was probably even more fiercer than the Celtics-Lakers currently (the Lakers-Celtics of the 80's was fiercer).

Northern California vs Southern California. State Capital vs Largest City in the South Land.

Rick Fox fighting Doug Christie makes Ron Artest and Paul Pierce look like a kiddie shoving match.

Those were the best times for a rivalry. Phil calling Sacramento a Cow town and Shaq calling them the Sacramento Queens.

"Sacramento will NEVER be the capital of California!! CAN YOU DIG IT??????????"

Good times...

Hobbit,

Eat lightning and crap thunder, I look at it more of you in your finest moments in the debates and rebuttal. You always take my good friend LT at the edge.

Eric Pincus has a great analysis on his article with Hoopsworld at the top or this one: http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=16923

We can 3peat provided our team is healthy during the playoffs.

Goes to show how crazy Lakers fans are:

It's okay that a former Celtic (FOX) can win 3 rings with us and still be universally loved, but a former Laker (CHRISITE, yep, remember they misspelled his name on his jersey for his first game) gets almost no love after becoming a King by way of 3 or 4 different teams. And Doug didn't win jack! Well, Petros and Money ride his jock when he calls in on KLAC, so I guess he won something...

DBDH!

DBDH - last I heard, Snaq was indeed sidling up to the buffet table. I heard Chuck tried to cut in line, and Snaq rapped something about tasting azzzz instead of the shrimp.

If you come over to the Laker Light, your past can be forgiven you (my son). BUT - if you should ever stray from that light - and heaven forbid turn your back on that light - then to hell with you. And your little dog.

Now see..Mamba24? The blog is now a cheerful, delightful stream of love between you and Justa (Head of the Mamba clan).

justa,

Yeah... that rap was wack. However, Snaq did admit this about his recording career. He once stated that his albums went Platinum, Gold, and Wood. Another classic. God, I hate that guy sometimes.

Hey fellas (includes ladies), what to do if SB signs with another team?

My suggestion: Get Rudy Fernadez from Portland for next year's 2nd round draft pick and cash. He will be cheaper than SB and a possible replacement for Sasha after this year.

Your thoughts...

Matt Barnes gets all my love and support until he crosses anyone named Phil, Kobe or Derek.

I'm looking forward to seeing if he can deliver like we think he can. And if he does, then Mitch deserves a raise.

Maybe it's a full moon...

Why is everyone getting all butthurt today?

DBDH!

I don't know...but my butt hurts!

Hey fellas (includes ladies), what to do if SB signs with another team?

My suggestion: Get Rudy Fernadez from Portland for next year's 2nd round draft pick and cash. He will be cheaper than SB and a possible replacement for Sasha after this year.

Your thoughts...

Hey Laker J!

I can't see SB going anywhere else. I mean, a chance to threepeat as a Champs? He'd be SO stupid not to. But hey - who knows for sure? In terms of Rudy? I mean, he's good, but will Portland take that deal?

Maybe it's all the thunder getting pushed out. Who knows...

Is it OCTOBER YET?

It has to be the thunder...

"Hey look! There's some lightning! Let's eat it"

"Chomp sizzle chomp chomp bzzzzzzzzt!"

"Hmmm. My stomach feels....funny. Oh! Oh wait! Holy....Ow! That hurts! Oh wait......"

"KABOOM!!!!!"

"Dang. That hurt my butt."

Laker scrimmages could get interesting, a lot of TESTOSTERONE,'with Kobe, Artest, Sasha and Barnes in the mix. PJ will be loving it, this team will not lack motivation this year.
Shaq and Kobe came to blows a couple of times in scrimmages and Kobe never backed down once.
You see, some guys hate to lose, no matter what is at stake, in this case you have four of those guys.
So practice could be more competitive than a Sacramento game!

Maybe it's all the thunder getting pushed out. Who knows...

What about the Lightning? Sure the poor Thunder get's all the blame while Lightning sits back in the cut and causes all the trouble! Shame, Shame, Shame! Thunder I feel you're pain! WTF? Forgive me folks it's the percoset. I will now go take a nap and be like a Book, no Brook. Yeah that's it Brook. LOl!

Breathe...
I most like the comments that make me think. Recently there was a link to a Lakers stat page that is wonderful.
http://www.82games.com/0910/0910LAL.HTM
What I'd like to know is where many of you get your info.
Would you share your links for stats that let us fans dig deeper than "this guy sucks," and such?
And on the notion that a new player may or may not fit in on the team, I'm reminded of a lesson the military learned long ago.
Collective struggles, such as "spring training," "boot camp," and the pre- season have the effect of developing cohesion. So I'm not so worried about Barnes or Ratliff fitting in once our season starts.

OOOOH now you gone get it! Them Real Laker Girls don't play man! Apologize, or run for your life!!! OH THE HUMANITY!!!

Rudy is disgruntled in Portland. Portland signed Wesley Matthews and Rudy's contract is to expire at the end of the season.
I read that they are not willing to let him go for nothing. But a 2nd and cash consideration might do the trick. Not sure if that works under the CBA for LA. Have to look in to it.

Magic has no credibility as a sports commentator, I am sorry to say. First he proclaims King James was the best in the NBA, only to retract it on national TV and apologize to KB, ( his own player)!
And now the lakers with their core players with signed contracts through 2014 are losing 2-3 championships to Miami? Huh?
what would possess a owner to down play his own team? We are going to do more that 3 peat, we will make some adjustments to get a superstar to play with Bynum in a couple of years, when Kobe is 36 or so.

Mike G,

I hate to say this, but Magic Johnson is as bad a sportscaster as he is a coach.

Every time I hear him speak about the Lakers, I cringe. He seems to conveniently forget that he has a statue outside Staples Center.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Hi All...

Matt Barnes made a great leap, as far as gaining my fanhood, by picking the Lakers and turning down more money in Cleveland...If Kobe accepts him, then so do I...

Mamba24 - Always the great ambassador...you are the blood that runs this body known as The Lakers Blog...

Jolly Rancher - forgive me for omitting you in my essasy "I'm catching on..."
I went back in the archives apparently when you were gone...But I remember you now from periodically reading the page...So this is your line in the essay...

We have an in house candy man...'Jolly Rancher'...Still trying to figure out if he is a Lamar fan...or if Lamar is a fan of him...

We got some sprinkles here in Vegas early this morning...Hope all is well with Faith, for weather here usually goes towards PHX, or vice versa...

Typo - Faith - Fatty...(I always do that)

Welcome back to LA, Matt.

Matt Barnes just do what you do best and you will not have to worry about acceptance. Laker fans are a tough crowd but when they love you they will do so fully. Just look at Ron-Ron. To say that his 'acceptance' was rocky is an understatement. He came in replacing a fan favorite who was a young player with tremendous upside. Ron-Ron to most was a flake and many worried that his skills had eroded. Throughout the year his 'contributions' were shaky at best as he struggled to learn the triangle. But he had a kinda "L.A." personality and he never, NEVER quit.

I'm willing to bet that if there was a chance to trade Artest back for Ariza the vote would be to keep Ron-Ron unconditionally. Laker fans love their players and usually wish them well when they leave (there are more than a few who like to have Shaq back). Sure you will get the 'treatment' when you screw up and there will be those who will constantly dog you out, but they will be in the minority (every fan base has them).

Good Luck in your new home and welcome to your ring!
