Ron Artest validates his arrival to the Lakers with an NBA championship
In raw elation, Lakers forward Ron Artest stood in the locker room eager to share any story that popped into his head.
A random anecdote usually emerged based on whomever he saw. When Artest's wife showed up and stood by his side, he revealed how his workouts often came at the expense of family time and dinners. When Lakers special assistant Chuck Person offered congratulations, Artest fondly recalled the special shooting sessions three hours he had before games in hopes to improve his form and shot selection so that he could pull out of his funk. And when his brother, Daniel Artest, shook his hands, Ron burst out in laughter, recalling an episode that happened this postseason where Daniel argued with Houston forward Trevor Ariza via Twitter over whether the Lakers ultimately benefited from signing Artest this off-season to a five-year, $33-million deal.
"I just called it how I see it," Daniel said, laughing.
I had long resisted supporting or refuting that claim, believing the debate between Ariza vs. Artest had to be measured within the context of a whole season. Though it was inevitable that the comparisons would turn up throughout the season, much of the conversation appeared to operate on a pendulum. Artest served as a good addition when he locked down an opponent's top scorer, had a hot shooting night or showed improvement running the triangle offense. He served as a bad addition whenever he had an off defensive night or made head-scratching decisions on offense. It was frankly far too early to have a definitive conclusion because all those performances represented scattered snapshots of a conflicting picture. It revealed a well-intentioned player intermittently channeling that passion into either a bad or good performance.
But as Artest frequently clutched the championship trophy following the Lakers' 83-79 Game 7 victory over Boston on Thursday, a few things remained clear. The Lakers finished on the winning end of the essential Ariza-Artest swap. Ariza in last year's postseason averaged 11.3 points, shot 47.6% from three-point range, and had two memorable steals off inbounds passes late in Games 1 and 3 of the Western Conference finals against Denver. In this year's postseason, Artest averaged 11.2 points a game on 39.8%, but his presence went beyond the box score, providing the defensive toughness the Lakers sorely needed.
Another thing also became clear. The random anecdotes Artest shared in the locker room and in his postgame news conference occurred whenever a family member, friend or teammate appeared nearby, revealing Artest leaned on a wide supporting cast to help him bring his 11-year career full circle after his persona was mostly defined by his infamous Malice at the Palace.
"Everything I've been through?" Artest pondered for a second. "Wow."
In 2004 as an Indiana Pacer, Artest went into the Pistons crowd after beer was thrown at him and punched a fan. The incident sparked an 86-game suspension, the longest penalty for a physical altercation in NBA history, and he received a year's probation for pleading no contest to assault charges. Fast forward to 2010, and you have Lakers reserve center DJ Mbenga pouring beer in the locker room over Artest's head. But the circumstances were much different. Artest was soaked in alcohol this time because he proved largely instrumental in bringing the Lakers the 2010 title. On a night the team collectively shot 32.5% and Kobe Bryant went six of 24 from the field, Artest had 20 points on seven-of-18 shooting and held Boston forward Paul Pierce to 18 points on a five-of-15 clip.
"For the most part, I didn't see Ron tire out there," Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said. "I thought he played with good energy in a game in which he had to play a lot of minutes, and he's played consistent minutes throughout."
"I'm just happy that he was able to win his first championship, and you could see it in his face," Lakers power forward Pau Gasol said. "He's like a little kid right now that got his dream come true, like we all did."
Artest wore a similar look on his face after Game 5 of the Western Conference finals against Phoenix when he made the game-winning shot. But his happiness after that game became as fleeting as his rise from goat to hero. He launched an ill-advised three-pointer in the final minute of that game as the Lakers nursed a three-point lead with 22 seconds on the shot clock. He then responded with a put-back off Bryant's missed three-pointer with 0.8 of a second remaining.
Artest's happiness this time appeared permanent. He kissed the championship trophy as he sat by his locker. He brought out a bottle of champagne soon after, eager to drink from it moments before instructing one of his sons never to drink alcohol. And he arrived at his postgame news conference with his large family, showing giddiness as he stared at a Wheaties box featuring every member of the Lakers.
But this wasn't just a moment of celebration for Artest. It was an opportunity for him to shed his past misgivings. He immediately thanked God for winning the championship. He then apologized to Indiana for "betraying them" when he requested to be traded after the 2005 season. Moments earlier in the locker room, he credited NBA Commissioner David Stern for allowing him to stay in the league. And he credited the help of a sports psychologist in helping him remain calm this season.
"Today is one of those days where I trusted in myself and I didn't settle for some shots," Artest said. "I kind of at the right time did exactly what Coach wanted me to do."
As a result, Artest earned his first NBA championship and definitively validated the Lakers' 2009 off-season decisions. But Artest won't talk about the latter part, so much as the people who helped him get to this point. But sooner or later, Artests runs out of time in telling his story. The Lakers spokesperson wants to wrap up the news conference. Artest's family wants to get something to eat. And Artest finally has nothing left to say.
"I wish I had a more powerful voice," he said. "Then I could scream more."
But it wasn't needed. The performance he showed and the stories he shared told it all.

Actually...
Lakers starting 5 in 1989 never lost a PLAYOFF GAME

Hey, Laker Nation....give our enemies NO quarter. They deserve every slight, derisive laugh, every 'what the hell were you thinking' look.
A championship, and being able to defend that championship with essentially the same squad LEAVES NO DOUBT. And for all the crap we've heard about how the Lakers are this and that, I give that the 1 fingered salute.
Kobe's not MJ? Sure, but I think Kobe will be better body of work. And let's not forget, MJ QUIT. I don't care how good he was, HE QUIT, and left the game. There are no excuses for that. His father died, but he's not the only one with strife.
Bayless saying we can't afford a parade? The Buss family is footing the bill! We have the biggest concentration of millionaires in the US....don't believe your own misconceptions, Skip.
Again, I say, rub their noses in it. The Lakers won, and defended a title, against the so-called toughest team in the NBA. They left no doubt. I'm extremely happy today!!

What I like the most is knowing this experience will make the team even TOUGHER and harder to beat

I've posted several comments since last night, and I have been remiss by not mentioning the great contributions of Andrew Bynum in the Finals. Drew showed that he does indeed have the heart of a champion and the mental stamina and toughness to excel in a tough, tough business.
I'm hoping that the young man does what it takes to report to training camp in top shape and ready to fulfill his massive potential. Drew can help take the Lakers to an even higher level. Fix the knee, work on your game and come back better than ever!!!
I'm so happy I could just bust!!!!

What a great day!
I'm so happy for the TruWarrior! He has quickly become one of my favorite Lakers. He was nails last night! Including the presser! That was the best post game press conference I've ever seen.
Just wait until you win a few more rings before you make it to reality TV Ron. I'm sure he'll be a hit.
And what can you say about KB24? Horrible night shooting, but never stopped playing. He hit the boards hard, played great D, and when it counted he trusted his team to pull it out.
Pau, Fish, Drew? Incredible effort. Incredible drive.
Thank you bench mob!
PJ will be back to complete his 4th threepeat!

Kobe/MJ notwithstanding, back to back to back would make that blip that was the Chicago Bulls of the 90s look absolutely inconsequential.
If you ask me, that's the next 'redemption'. It would be fun to see that.
Posted by: #4 | June 18, 2010 at 08:42 AM
Yessir, Tim-4-Show, I think they are mentally tougher just by this whole playoff run.
They will be even better next year, just like in 09. Ron's gonna be more in tune with what they're doing.
Posted by: #4 | June 18, 2010 at 08:44 AM
I have to say the fans at Staples last night were great -- I thought they really helped the team pick up the energy level in the 3rd quarter and carry that into the 4th.
This is so great, seeing all the folks on here celebrating and, for me personally, being able to celebrate the last couple of years watching with my son. I know everyone here has a personal story to tell -- that makes championships so much sweeter.

Why are media pundits crucifying Kobe for being named series MVP? Arguably, they were getting ready to give it to him after game 6, even if the Lakers lost game 7.
I'm not even joking about that
Posted by: Tim-4-Show | June 18, 2010 at 08:47 AM
Is anyone listening to ESPN? This is the 3rd guest in a row who's take today is "Kobe is not as good as____".
This is pretty rude. Why focus on Kobe so much when Gasol and Artest and the whole team just had such a big moment? These topics were 1) Kobe not as good as MJ, 2) Kobe not as good as agic, 3) Kobe not as good as previous MVP 4) now Kobe still hates haq and hasn't matured sincethe Shaq days.
This is serious Kobe hatred here. Now, Kobe's "small and petty" something that "has workedfor him"...
Wow. Pure hatred by these people.

Good Morning Everyone!
SO proud to be a Lake Show fan today. Talk about heart!!! They were fantastic last night. Absolutely incredible!
And I absolutely LOVE Ron Ron after I saw the press video last night. His honesty was refreshing, and his enthusiasm was unbridled. Congrats to the entire team.
And speaking of celebrations, does anyone know how I can execute a vision that I have of some designs for T-Shirts? I've got some stuff that I want to do, but I'm not too sure how to go about making one (or getting them made).
Hope everyone is having a GREAT morning!

Ron Artest is alright in my book.
When we signed him last year, I shared a cute comment on this site, that became a published article. Ron shared it on his tweeter. Then I got an email from his brother thanking me and saying "if I have anymore, to be sure and send it to him"
Ron is into the fans. I'm glad he his a Lakers. He has earned his way into our hearts.
If you didn't see it when it posted, this is the published peice.

I have never this kind of hate coming from ESPN when they were'nt talking about OJ or John Rocker. This is not OK, especially only a few hours after such a historic moment for the Lakers. Leave your hatred at the door of the party, or don't even bother knocking. Now I'm about to start singing the 3peat song cause all the mercy I had contemplated just got flushed down my Bayless-shaped toilet.
But I won;t turn this off, because i need to see how low these bugs will go.

Following is an actual conversation between Ron and his psychiatrist that has found its way to this blog.
R-I can't shake these feelings of regret over my past actions, makes me press all the time.
P-You have to own up to those feelings whatever they may be, own up to them and let it go.
R-What if that means I have to apologize and admit that I ran away from things in Indiana?
P-What I said.
R-What do I do in the biggest game of my career when all of the pressure is on?
P-Shoot the ball and if you miss don't ever come back.
R-What if Kobe won't share with me?
P-Kobe will share, he's learned his greatest lesson from all of those greats before him that sharing is a strength.
R-Okay Doc I got it... wait hold on, Its the Zen Master in my other ear. Phil, what now?

Kobe shouldn't put the Shaq quote out there. Not critical but delays his canonization for awhile longer.
If today's press corps had been around when MJ was top of the heap, his star would have fallen more than once.
The Cs decided Kobe wasn't going to beat them. But if you demand a double and triple team, you did beat them. MVP, and if not, who?

Don't feel bad 131. Your team had a helluva season and were truly warriors. Any other team but The Lakers they would have destroyed. My hat's of to them and to you. I don't know many people who would have come here after such a loss. I owe you for having my back when I had that "lil Trouble" and I thank you. Maybe The Lakers and Celtics can do it again next year. Wouldn't that be awesome. The Lakers competing for their 17th to tie The Celtics title count and celtics trying to stop them. Mannnnnnnn! Now that would be The Finals of All Time. Thanks 131 I really enjoyed blogging with you and you are and always will be my friend.

The Celtic world seems to be rallying around the "Kobe is not MJ" argument today. Bob Ryan on ESPN just spent his entire radio segment talking about how Kobe was not worthy of the MVP. Lol....um, who cares?
Now Skip Bayless is doing his segment about kobe not being the MVP. Oh and they threw out some laughs about how Los Angeles can't even afford a parade. I guess these guys are really hurt by the LAkers victory. Oh well.
Wes
Posted by: wesjoenixon | June 18, 2010 at 08:31 AM
Wes....
LOL!! Like you said...who cares?
I've always gotten a kick out of the media knocking Kobe for trying to be like MJordan! What garbage!
Who would have been better for Kobe to pattern his game after than one of the NBA's greatest? Jeff Van Gundy said it well, when he said that Kobe just isn't treated fairly by the social media. Kobe is an all time great and nothing that Bob Ryan or Skip Bayless can do or say will change that. 5 rings as a principal player. Not many can say that!
Posted by: bronxlakerfan | June 18, 2010 at 09:03 AM
Wes,
It is sickening, isn't it? Guys like Mike Breen, who appeared ready to cry at the end of the game last night as the Celtics lost; Wilbon with a post on his blog telling us how Kobe cannot compare to Jordan, no matter how many championships he wins; Blayless and other braying idiots who have absolutely nothing useful or positive to contribute in any way shape or form.
You know what? Who the f*ck cares what these dopes have to say? Lakers won and none of these clowns can change that. And they cannot bring us down!

GOOD MORNING LAKERFAM!!!!!! WHAT A GLORIOUS MORNING IT IS!!!!
"THE LAKERS DYNASTY IS BACK,
ONE MORE BANNER GOIN' UP!!!!..."
OH... MY... GOD... WHAT... A ... GAME!!!!!
I think I died like twice last night. For most of the game I felt like I was running a temp of 110 degrees and my blood pressure was through the roof.
Hands down, this was ONE HELLUVA roller coaster ride.
Lakers and Celtics in a HARD FOUGHT seven game series that came right down to the wire. WOW!!! That was AMAZING!!!
As a LAKER FAN this will go down as one of the best FINALS to EVER BE WON. The Celtics pushed it all the way to, literally, the last minute in GAME 7.
As a fan of ANY sport, you couldn't have asked for a better ending. (Although, a sweep would have been easier on my heart... LOL!)
Mr. Artest, next season when they present you with that Ring, I want you to WEAR IT PROUDLY and with the knowledge that you are a LAKER FOR LIFE!!! Legends are made in Game 7 of the Finals...
WE WIN, WE WON
THE LAKERS GET IT DONE
IN THE PANTHEON OF CHAMPIONS
THE LAKERS ARE NUMBER ONE
IT'S A FACT WE'RE BACK 2 BACK
TEAMS SHOULD BE AFRAID
BUT FOR NOW WE CELEBRATE
I'LL SEE YOU ALL AT THE PARADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2010 WORLD CHAMPION LOS ANGELES LAKERS.
(I can NEVER get tired of this!)

MORNING AFTER EUPHORIA . . .
WOW! Amidst the postgame tears, it was all I could say. Too choked-up. Too fulfilled. Too spent.
Now, this morning, I want to express my random list of thoughts and emotions as I settle in to the reality that WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!
--On the chat at games end, several times I wrote, "I LOVE YOU ALL!" What a wonderful "Lakers Family" you all have become for me. Thanks!
--We beat the Celtics,,, in Game 7,,, down 13 in the second half,,, out-muscled them,,, out-toughed them,,, wore them down with our defense,,, BEAT THEM AT THEIR OWN GAME!!!
--Incredibly amusing this morning how pathetic and weak the comments by Trolls and weak-Laker "fans" are as they try to dim the afterglow of BACK-TO-BACK champiionships.
--MM has been remarkable and should enjoy a well-deserved rest between Tuesday (after the parade) and Thursday (NBA Draft)! lol
--Can the blogger "DFish" ever be taken seriously again?
--Ron Artest or Trevor Ariza? I bet Paul Pierce would love to have a vote on that move now!
--Pau Gasol should NEVER ever again be questioned on his mental toughness.
--Andrew Bynum won me over these past six weeks. The way he chose to try to continue despite the knee injury was a big, BIG sign of maturity over previous years and injuries. I am sold on the big guy now.
--Sasha did NOT pout, stayed ready, and contributed TWO HUGE POINTS!
--Farmar is gone. You could see it and feel it in his postgame interview.
--Ron Artest was the most entertaining, refreshing, candid, borderline-crazy of any player after any championship in the history of professional sports! You could see why teammates love to be around him and why coaches hate to have to coach him! LOL
--"SATISFYING IRONY" is the only words I can summon when reading the crybaby posts of Celtics fans whining about "Lakers getting away with being too rough" or "Not fair because our starting center was injured", etc., etc.

Thanks. Same here. Im on a business trip in Florida so my internal clock is a bit off. Great series. Even though the results were not what I had hoped. But we battled and thats all you can ask your team to do. We left all on the court. Got killed on the boards. That was the difference in the game and series.
Dont be gone long. Thanks for at least giving us some respect. Too bad few of your fellow blogers follow your lead. We can do it again next year. I think we got another year in us if we can make a few additions and subtractions. Take care.

Ron Ron DEFINITELY was the game 7 MVP...
back in 2004 I watched that whole Pacers-(ugh)pistons game LIVE.
that PUNKA## ben wallace was absolutely the instigator at the end of the game and should have been suspended instead of OUR Artest, who was first just trying to get out of the area and then had to defend himself from that IDIOT D-rod crowd.
AWWSUM vindication NBA CHAMPION RON ARTEST!!!

ROFLMAO! Stop that Fatty. On a more serious note. Justa and My Virtual Marriage ended last night with the end off the Lakers season. The woman was just to Virtually good for me. That's the only pall hanging over an otherwise outstanding night and day. You know Fatty you never know what you virtually got till you lose it and I virtually lost big time. Wow...ESPN back tracking BIG TIME now after all those disparaging comments about Kobe. I guess Laker fans world wide got angry and wrote in/called in to point out all the mistakes in what they were saying. LIke Bayless had a huge rant about Kobe not thanking/giving credit to his teammates last night, which he did many times. "I guess I missed that" Bayless said as he quickly changed the subject.

LakerMike -
Thank you for your mention. I am quite honored and am truly happy you have felt welcome. There have been a number of people who have helped me to feel welcome (Charles, EastCoastJessie, P&GR, Jon K., etc.), and I am more than happy to help others to feel as welcome as I felt when I first started posting.
I hope you are enjoying your day today, and I look forward to blogging with you for many times to come. :-)

Good Morning Lakers Nation, First we've got to love it, just the way we planned it. Fighting to the last minute, we wouldn't have it any other way, how SWEET. The ghost of RED, the Idiot fan, the Donkey Show, Lunatic and can't forget the TROLLS (the REAL RETARDS) that gave us bloggers a joy to know that people in Boston are more dis-functional then any place in the WORLD. RON, RON, aka (THRILLER) man what can we say, a LOVE- HATE relationship all season. Something like you're wife or girlfriend, you just can't get a handle on them or what their thinking. Thank got for the Physiologist and MEDICATION, Thriller has come full circle and this brother really deserves it, you can't help but feel good for him.
Posted by: 2Phatt | June 18, 2010 at 09:31 AM
MM,
Ron is clearly the better player between him and Trevor but I am not convinced that we couldn't have won with Ariza on the team, a lot of the team's struggle on the offense wouldn't have been the same with his presence. He was a good role player, competent defender, made key steals that seal games, didn't stray from the offense or jack up treys, ran the fast break a lot better and finish at the rim better than Ron.He turned some games around for us in the playoffs last year, one single handedly against the Magic.
So..Ron's superior overall talent at this juncture doesn't mean LA definitely did better with him on the team.Ron did falter on key moments and admitted that he can't keep his poise in those situations, what with his mental problems and all.
The argument is moot at this point and fans should just be enjoying the victory but I just wanted to point out that you saying that LA ended up on the winning end of that deal isn't fair to Ariza.LA could have won with him too.He had his benefits over Ron Ron.
Don't get me wrong ,I heart Ron Ron and his craziness. He truly earned his purple and gold stripes and is a invaluable part of the team now.
Congratulations to all the members of Lakers Blog and the fans out there ! Love you all !

I have one gripe about some of these posts on Pau Gasol.
I would *ANY* of you Gasol praisers to honestly say:
Gasol was playing this hard/assertive during the season
or during 2-3 losses of our losses in Boston.
That being said, Gasol had a great game. He had a great series.
Bynum stuck it out. That's good.
Art gets validation/redemption. That's great.
The Lakers won. THAT'S AWESOME!!!

I've been listening to ( Chick RIP) and watching the Lakers for getting close to 50 years. I lived through all the Auerbach cigar smoking defeats and then through the great West-Chaimberland, Showtime, Shaq-Kobe, and now Kobe-Pau championship victories. In spite of the fact I was yelling at my TV and commenting that this is the ugliest display of a championship game I can recall, I have to say this was the sweetest victory of all.
The Lakers showed heart and toughness in what was a pure will-to-win victory over the hated arch rival Celtics, shutting the pie holes of all the East coast bias Lakers haters and putting the last nail in the Celtic coffin which will now remain closed for another few decades while we go on to surpass them in the years to come as the winningest NBA team of all time. Yes Red, you are now getting smaller in Phil's rear view mirror. Big Three will be remembered as the One&Done Celtic Champions.
The Lakers will be stronger next year at the core. Kobe, healthy all year & looking to tie MJ with six rings, nuff said. Ron will be starting the year knowing the triangle. Pau will be his new found toughest finesse player on the planet, Drew is just coming into his own and will be a man beast next year. No one is ever allowed to doubt D Fish again. You can bet there will be some additions & subtractions to improve the bench with some players looking for a ring ala Ron.
All in all, a story book ending to a great year...time to celebrate for a few months. Life is good in Lakersville.

I don't know who I hate worse, Bill Simmons or Skip Bayless...
Baylick complaining about the officiating, (welcome to our world) and still not giving Kobe his due credit...WHATEVER HATER...
Even now after going back to back, winning a tough series and a game 7, battling through all the adversity all year, especially injuries...
The Lakers still get no respect. What are you going to do? Who cares, the important opinions are the members of this blog, and the real Laker Fans...
LA Lakers 2010 NBA Champions...I can hear that all summer and never get tired of hearing it...

[This is a repost frorm yesterday afternoon for the AM crowd]
A look into the two teams pre-game meetings....It shows clearly the difference between the two organizations philosophies.
The Lakers -
The lights are out in the locker room. The aroma of incense fills the air. The entire team, including the coaches, the players, and even the towel boys are meditating. Phil is sitting on his specially designed soft cushion with his legs crossed, arms outstretched, and humming, "Ah ummmm..." It is so quiet that the only other thing you hear is deep methodical breathing, and in the background, Jordy is giggling softly as Luke is tickling him.
After the Dali Lama says the pregame ritualistic prayer, the Lakers break with a soft, said in a whisper, "Let's go get this one. The ring is ours for the taking"
The Celtics -
The Celtics forgo the usual in the locker room meeting and crowd into the teams bathroom. The echoes sound better and promotes closer team unity.
Paul Pierce is sitting down in the middle stall because he is the captain. Doc Rivers is not present, its a players only meeting.
PP speaks first from his throne. "Who is going to win?!"
The team answers, "We are!"
PP. "I can't hear you, you maggots. Who is going to win?!"
The team responds louder, "We are!!"
PP: "And who is the greatest player in the world?!"
The team, "You are!!"
Now Kevin Garnett stands up, head pointed to the ceiling and screams at the top of his lungs. "AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!"
"Good, now that I have my throat cleared, its time to whip you boys into KG game shape. With Perk out, we need Sheed and Big Baby to carry his load."
Kevin is now looking for Sheed but doesn't see him anywhere.
"Sheed, where are you?"
"Right here KG" As he yells from the last stall with its door closed. Smoke is rising from the stall. "I'm just taking care of my pre-game business, you know..taking my back meds.
KG now notices Big Baby Davis is not in the bathroom. "Baby! Get your big butt in here right now!"
Sobbing is heard from inside one of the closed stalls. "I'm not coming out, because you will hurt me" Baby is heard crying.
KG demands he come out now or be killed. The stall door slowly opens and Baby peeks his head out. KG slaps him in the face. "Don't you let me down tonight!"
At this point Ray Allen says, "Its time to get some Celtic Pride fellas" He then pulls out a large green paddle and orders the whole team to bend over and face the Staples center.
First to get whacked is Rondo, "Thank you Ray, may I have another?!"
After the Celtic Pride treatment, a dummy is thrown into the room dressed like a Lakers with the number 24 on its chest. KG grabs it and starts to punch it first, then the rest join in punching, kicking, ripping its arms out in a total frenzy, all yelling and screaming, "Kill, kill, kill the beast! Kill, kill, kill the beast!"........
The Celtics are now ready for the game of their lives.

As the trophy presentation commenced, both of the Mini Banner Holders waddled into the living room and sat on Daddy's lap. All I could do was smile...and remember.

This season was ROUGH! Honestly, I was not certain if that mighty Laker light could truly overcome the darkness that is the Boston Celtics. Game Day Prayers and all, I was not sold. But our guys mustered up all that was inside them and, in the midst of a dark and ugly game, they emerged into the light.
*
And to share it with the Mini Me's was extra sweet. For those who are wondering, Mini Banner Holderette is growing healthy and strong with no manifested complications from the lead poisoning issues. She is walking and talking and doing just fine. She overcame...just like our Lakers. And, for both of those things, I truly thank God.

How about the ring the TEAM won last night?

Some of you have already commented on Mike Wilbon's disgusting column disrespecting Kobe.
http://bit.ly/aOLZpq
The Washington Post allowed me to counter with by own comment below his diatribe. Here it is:
Mike,
A misguided column like this only diminishes you, not Kobe. Perhaps you've been spending too much time with the Laker hating folks at ESPN.
Kobe absolutely ranks in the pantheon of NBA greats. His unique, singular willpower, discipline, and knowledge of every aspect of the game makes him the greatest player of his generation, just as Jordan's propelled him to the top of his generation.
Once Kobe is inducted into the Hall of Fame, he will be recognized for what he is and your column will be deservedly long forgotten.

Pau Gasol is t he real MVP in this finals: MVPAU.
Rumor in Spain: Next year David Stearn want a ring for LBJ, and his first target to make that is Pau Gasol playing alongside Lebron in New York Knicks. Pau deserves 2-3 more rings and with Lebron that is possible, not with Kobe b/c age. Mr. Stern want a leader for Lebron and Pau fit perfectly in that role.
Next Year: NYN vs L.A. Lakers, Kobe and Bynum vs. Pau and Lebron. Pau deserves be the nº1 option in a new team. He deserves a lot (3 years in L.A., 3 finals in a row and 2 titles).
Maybe next year can play for Lakers as Bynum´s backup.

The Lakers gave us an early Christmas present.
In keeping with the spirit that prevails during the holiday season, or is supposed to, here is a lighthearted, just a little corny ditty:
Tis The Season...
Sing the praises of LA Lakers
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
They beat them all, there's no more takers,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gold and purple,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Lakers play tough they will even scuffle,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
See the beaten C's before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Struck them down 'fore they destroyed us.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Soon our Lakers get fingers measured
Fa la la la, la la la, la la la.
Follow them to the merry treasure.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Fast away old Celtics pass,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the Champs, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la la, la la la, la la la.
We love LA, there's no team better.
Fa la la la la, la la la

@2Phatt, Thanks for all the Props! Right back at you! Yeah it was a heck of a season. I don't see how next season will be able to match this one. I also don't see how The Lakers can be stopped from a 3-Peat. The only barrier possibly standing in the Way is Princess Jimmy going to a Team that is already loaded with talent. But that can't happen because all the teams wiht talent are way over the salary cap. The only team he could possibly go to that could afford to sign him is the bulls. That still would not be enough to even get the Bulls out of the east I think. So if Princess Jimmy leaves cleveland the only Powers left will be The Celtics and Orlando. Oh well thats for next season. For now just enjoy and thanks for having my back and for all you do on the Blog.
Just think....16 TIME WORLD CHAMPION LOS ANGELES LAKERS! WOWWWW!

Rick,
It is sad that Wilbon tries to hide his hatred for Kobe behind his silly "perspective" argument. I don't recall any of that while Jordan was winning or after he retired. And it's funny how Jordan's bad games are forgotten, his selfishness, his ego, his antics, and all the talent around him. Oh well...
On a happier note, I just saw a t-shirt for sale -- the caricature back-to-back championship version. I have the same thing from 1988 with that team and the five championship trophies. Looks like I will have to break out the credit card!

Posted by: teamn | June 18, 2010 at 10:35 AM
A few of thoughts:
Phil has extended his record to 48-0 after winning the 1rst game of a series...
PJ has won his first Finals game 7...
He needs both hands and 1 toe to count his rings...
He will be back next year, to chase the absurd 4th 3peat...
Kobe will need two hands to count his rings if we do 3peat...
We are the favorites again next year, with the West still not able to match up to this core of players, and the Lestern Conf is in disarray...
Fish I hope will return next season. We will need his leadership and tutelage of the new PG...
Artest is now a true Laker, who has earned to be part of this team...
Pau could have been CoMVP, and should never hear the word 'soft' again...
Let's hope we stay healthy, especially Kobe...
Let's hope AB has successful surgery, and a very dominating 2010-2011 season...after all he is the future of this franchise...
Let's hope LO, Artest, Pau, and the rest of the team, takes Kobe's lead, and works on a facet of their game, being even better next year...
Let's hope we 3peat next season...#17 Coming UP...

True enough, but in all fairness, so did everyone else on this Laker team.
One thing that makes this one so special, for me anyway, is that there wasn't just one player that dominated the game, scored 40+ points or whatever.
Game 7 was truly a team victory.

Also, do you know how NBA and the contracts work?? Pau just signed a contract extension with the Lakers for 3 yrs. Which means he is NOT a free agent. So, just because you like sniffing Lebron's jocks does not mean he can go and play with him in NY!!
The only way Pau can go to NY is if they can do a trade-deal. I dont think New York has anyone equal to Pau's worth for Mitch to consider the trade...
Also, listen: Pau would always be ONLY a #2 option, and a great one in that though. You're assuming LeCrab will play side-kick to Pau?? wake-up dude!!

Just read Bill Simmons' verbal diarrhea of the live coveage of Game-7...
wow, I cant believe some comments he has made, very appalling. In that entire chat/coverage, he has mentioned Derek Fisher as Fisher's colon (i.e) Fisher's colon makes a 3...
And then referring to PJ as "Phil the Arrogant A-Hole Jackson"..
You can hate a team, or love your team so much. But I strongly believe this is going over the top. He does such verbal diarrhea, and ESPN calls him a "writer/editor"??
When I see these kind of people, I think may be Freedom of Speech should not be for such haters...

We Are The Champions
We've paid more dues
Time after time
We've finished our season
And did it one more time
And bad mistakes
We made a few
We've had our share, of refs and haters
But we've come through
We are the champions, my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
Cause we are the champions - of the world
We've taken our bows
And many stupid calls
You brought us love and support and everything that goes with it
We thank you all
But it's been no bed of poses
No pleasure cruise -
We consider it a challenge before the whole NBA
And we aint gonna lose -
We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
Cause we are the champions - of the world

Here are some things I noticed. Even though the rest of the Lakers had won a Championship before, this one clearly meant more. Clearly. Every Lakers not name RonRon just played horrible on offense. Poor Bynum was so jacked-up he couldn't put anything in the rim. Pau was missing all of his normal shots. And NOBODY could hit a free throw. Nobody.
But, to a man, everyone on the court believed in their Guru, the Esteem-able Phil Jackson. He told them that if they continue to rebound, they would win the game. So, they all rebounded with energy and desperation. And, you know what, he was right. This marked the first game of the series where the leader of the first quarter didn't win. However, the team that dominated the boards, did. PJ correctly guessed which of the two streaks was more important.
But, in spite of all those things, they never panicked, or even seemed to doubt. They were giddy, tight, intense, but never worried. Strange, because it looked clearly like nothing was working except the defense and the rebounding. But, the Lakers believed in each other, and believed in their coach and believed in their leaders Kobe and Fish. And, they were rewarded handsomely for that belief.
Kobe was trying too hard. Everyone was. RonRon, of all people was the coolest head on the floor. Go figure.
Also, for both teams, wasn't RonRon the only player without a ring? Or pretty close to it. At least the only mainline player with no ring. He was the most composed.
Then, I've got to make sure I give Fish his props. We haven't had a Willis Reed moment like his since 2008 when Pierce did the same thing. Fish hobbles onto the court and calmly drains the 3 that allowed the Lakers to finally break through and tie the game. The Lakers had up till then shown a complete inability to finish closing the gap that the Craptics had opened. At every opportunity, either a layup was missed or a free throw was clacked or a wide open jumper was flubbed.
In comes Fish. He drains the jumper and the Lakers never looked back. I could visibly see that he had single-handily lifted the weight off the Lakers backs. From that point forward they just seemed to play freer. I don't think he scored another point. His job was done.
The rest was up to RonRon. Congratulations, man. You have completely rehabilitated you image. Nice work. I am not surprised to know it was a group/family effort with you. I'm glad to know that you surrounded yourself with good, positive, supportive people and basically changed your life.
RonRon, you are a true role model.
Great win, Lakers family!

Except in Boston, people are starting to finally put Kobe into that group of players just behind MJ as the GOAT. 15 rebounds? Are you kidding me? All of the key assists? Tenacious and relentless defense?
He just showed that he is a superstar that can be coached. He showed that he can follow a game plan. He showed just how intelligent he is. And, he did so on a night for which he admitted that the emotion of the moment got the better of him (manifested on the offensive side of the ball).
In Phil Jackson we trust. Come back for one more, PJ!
